Palomar Health clinic to open Monday Palomar Health announced that it is delivering on its Proposition BB promise to build a new clinic for Ramona and will open the Ramona Ambulatory Care Center on March 18. The 7,600-square-foot clinic is on 13th Street, near the corner of Main Street, across from the Ramona Library. Funds from Proposition BB, approved by voters in the public health district in 2004, were
used to pay for the project. Arch Health Partners will relocate from its location at 1236 Main St. to the new clinic, where it will be the sole tenant. Arch Health is adding an urgent care center at the clinic that is scheduled to open April 1. A community celebration/open house is planned for April 13 at the new care center.
On March 21, Ramona Community Foundation (RCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, will hold its first free workshop in a four-part series for the local nonprofit community. The focus of the March workshop is Board Governance and it will be led by nonprofit leader Wes Brusted, a Ramona resident and nonprofit industry leader with an array of leadership accomplishments, said Trudy Armstrong with The San Diego Foundation. “Simultaneously pursuing a doubleedged career as a producer and director, Wes Brustad founded Stage South (South Carolina) and served as vice president of The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis where he developed the Second Stage
and oversaw the theater’s national touring productions in addition to heading up its fundraising efforts,” Armstrong said in a statement announcing the March 21 meeting. Brustad was executive director of the South Carolina Arts Commission and a co-founder of the South Carolina Arts Foundation. He oversaw the design and building of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, where he also served as the producing director for the Advent Theatre, a League of Resident Theatres (LORT) theater, directing a variety of work from the classics to contemporary comedies to musicals. SDG&E to start moving poles along San Vicente Road for road improvement project on Monday

VEHICLE FIRE—Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire extinguished a vehicle fire at Magnolia Avenue and Pile Street about 8 a.m. Tuesday. A flammable material reaching a hot ignition source in the Isuzu Trooper triggered the fire, said a fire official.
Food & Clothes Closet reopens Tuesday after major remodel The public will see the changes that have been taking place in the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet at 773 Main St. when it reopens its doors at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19.
Store remodeling plans began in November. When renovation started in January, the nonprofit kept its doors open until March 4, when major remodeling necessitated the closure.
San Diego Gas & Electric is expected to begin work March 18 relocating utility poles along San Vicente Road between Warnock Drive and Deviney Lane, and from Chuck Wagon Road to just beyond Wildcat Canyon Road in Ramona. The poles are being relocated for the planned San Vicente Road Improvement Project. Traffic control is expected to occur daily during normal working hours with flagging localized at one pole location at a time. The pole relocation work is expected to
take approximately four months. “Every effort will be made to keep any traffic disruptions to a minimum,” said Steve Ron, County Department of Public Works project manager. More than 90 accidents have occurred on San Vicente Road in the past several years, the county reports. The road improvement project, requested by the community
and endorsed by the Ramona Community Planning Group, will improve road safety by reducing the number of curves and improving sight distance. Bike lanes and a multi-use pathway will also be constructed. Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in fall 2013 and expected to take about 18 months to complete. For more information on the SDG&E pole relo-
cation project, contact Ed Snow of SDG&E at 858636-6817. For more information on the San Vicente Road Improvement project, contact Ron at 858-694-2567 or go to sdcounty.ca.gov/ dpw/roads/projects/sanvicente.html. Updates on the road improvement project will also be posted on the DPW website at sdcounty. ca.gov/DPW and on the DPW Facebook and Twitter pages: SDCountyDPW.

Drainage project should stop flooding at high school and San Vicente Terrace The county’s San Vicente Road Drainage Improvement Project, scheduled to end this week, is designed to alleviate flooding at Ramona High School and property across the street on San Vicente Terrace, said Carl Lester, Southland Paving Inc. superintendent at the site. Southland, an Escondido firm, is working on the project, which involved, among other things, digging a trench for a new culvert at Ramona High School’s agriculture department parking lot on San Vicente Road. A culvert 7 feet by 2 feet is being installed to run west to carry stormwater to a tributary of the Santa Maria Creek, Lester said, adding that they start work af-

Representation on Planning Commission debated at RCPG meeting By KAREN BRAINARD How fairly Ramona is being represented on the county’s Planning Commission was a topic brought up by a resident at the Ramona Community Planning Group’s March 7 meeting. Jim Salvatore told planners that he is concerned about Bryan Woods representing Ramona on the Planning Commission because he is no longer a resident. Woods, who owned the former Ramona Pharmacy, was first appointed to represent District 2, which includes Ramona, on the Planning Commission in 1993. He was re-appointed for his sixth term by District 2 County Supervisor Dianne Jacob in January. “I don’t feel he should be the one representing Ramona when he lives in Del Mar,” said Salvatore. “I have nothing against Bryan, we’ve been friends for 30 years, but he’s not representing Ramona the
way he should be, the way the majority of Ramona people want him. I feel he should be taken off that board.” Salvatore said he talked to Jacob about his concerns. “I think part of the problem with her selection is somebody else needs to step up to the plate,” he said. Salvatore said he was too busy to volunteer to be considered, but added that his wife, Sandee, is communicating with Jacob and creating a job description for the post. Carol Fowler, however, who was sitting next to Salvatore, disagreed with his viewpoint. “I have huge reservations about taking this step,” said the real estate agent and vice chair of the Ramona Village Design Group. “I think we need to think this through.” Woods, she said, lived in the community for a long time and served on various boards. Fowler said she talked to Woods and be-
lieves he is well aware that Ramonans were unhappy with some of his recent decisions on the Planning Commission. Woods voted to approve the Sol Orchard solar project for Warnock Drive and Ramona Street, and the expansion of Highland Valley Ranch rehabilitative center on Highland Valley Road, despite opposition from the planning group and many residents. Fowler added that to replace Woods with someone who lives in District 2 would not necessarily mean that person would be from Ramona. “I urge you to look at the full track record of Bryan and what he has done for the community. He knows the community. He knows what the community wants,” Fowler said. RCPG Chairman Jim Piva disclosed that he also talked to Woods and told him the planning group was displeased with some of his votes. Piva cautioned those at the meeting about the pos-

sibility of more large solar installations in the community. “Just so the community knows, there is a big push right now, because Pandora’s box had been opened...for solar power plants, industrial complexes, here in Ramona and some of the ranchers here in Ramona are being approached right now to sign similar contracts...Outside corporations are coming
in and offering money to property owners,” he said. The owner of the property at Ramona Street and Warnock Drive has signed a 25-year agreement with Sol Orchard to lease the land for the nearly 43-acre solar energy installation that will tie into a San Diego Gas & Electric distribution line “I think we definitely need to have an ally on the Planning Commission,”
Piva said. “There needs to be some kind of shot across the bow, if you will, to our political representatives to our community of Ramona, and that includes Bryan.” Planning group members discussed whether the topic of the Planning Commission appointment should be agendized for a future meeting but decided against doing so, saying it is not in their purview.
Water board sets budget calendar By late April customers of the Ramona Municipal Water District are slated to receive their notices of proposed water rates that will go into effect on July 1, according to the district’s tentative budget calendar. RMWD directors have approved the budget calendar for the 2013-14 fiscal year that begins July 1. The following dates are tentative, said district staff, and subject to change, depending on water rate information from the San Diego County Water Authority, the sole supplier of water to RMWD. •March 26: Board Budget Workshop — overview of RMWD budget process and finances at board of directors meeting. •April 9: Board Budget Workshop — Review of revenues, operating expenses,
and proposed water and sewer rates at the board meeting. Directors to approve distribution of Proposition 218 letter with estimated water and sewer rates, or notto-exceed rates, to all RMWD customers. •April 22: Mailing of Proposition 218 letter, at least 45 calendar days before projected June 11 public hearing date. •June 11: Projected date for public hearing and approval of the budget. Hearing will consider public concerns on proposed changes to water rates, sewer service charges, and San Vicente sewer availability charge. Final budget to be approved by board. The board meets at 2 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month in Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Lane.

Teacher parlays band talk into $9,500 worth of Taylor guitars By PIXIE SULSER Sergio Estrada, teacher at Olive Peirce Middle School by day, guitar instructor by afternoon, and professional musician by night, is always searching for ways to bring handson experiences to his students, whether it is in the Olive Peirce Today video studio or his after-school music classes. His three worlds came together recently, forming
a partnership between Estrada and Taylor Guitars of El Cajon. It all started with a conversation between Estrada and Scooter from Taylor Guitars during a weekend gig with Estrada’s band, Monsters of Rock (MOR). Scooter, a big fan of MOR, was asking the band members about their day jobs. When he learned Estrada was a middle school teacher, he told him about Taylor Guitar’s Educa-

tional Foundation, which donates guitars to area schools. Estrada went right to work with his OPMS video production class, creating a video highlighting his after-school music class known as Jam Sessions. Not long after sending the production to Chalise Zolezzi, communications manager at Taylor Guitars, Estrada found himself picking up five new Solidbody electric guitars that retail for approximately $1,900 each. Since 2000 Taylor Guitars has worked with the San Diego Music Foundation supplying school music programs with electric and acoustic guitars. “Nearly 100 schools and approximately 30,000 school-aged children have benefited from donations of over 2,300 guitars,” said Zolezzi. In the beginning the donations focused solely on acoustic guitars, but in 2011, the program expanded to include the donation of electric guitars.
In addition to the Taylor Guitars for Schools program, the company offers school tours of the factory in El Cajon, allowing students to see how “raw pieces of wood are transformed into guitars,” said Zolezzi. Estrada said he is excited about what this donation offers the Jam Session students. “This year we have a lot of students who are interested in playing guitar, but several of them don’t have instruments,” he said. “Now they have something to learn on.” Jam Sessions includes students of all ability levels. “Some kids just come because they want a place to jam with other musicians,” said Estrada, “and some are beginners and want to watch others play. That’s how I learned as a kid. I would watch people play and then practice what I saw.” For the more advanced musicians, Estrada provides motivation and

Estrada, three of his former OPMS Jam Session students — Jory Oberlies, Gunner Turner, and Ricardo Alva — were in the Olive Peirce Today video studio talking with Estrada and what else — jamming. All three former Jam Session attendees plan to continue their musical education after high school and are striving for careers in the music industry. Oberlies, a Ramona High School senior, is off to Long Beach University in the fall. He plans to study music in some form and explore opportunities in the Los Angeles music scene. He plays in a local band, 50 Cal, and attributes his continued interest in music to Estrada’s after-school
Jam Sessions. “Having a place to learn and to play helped me to persevere and stick with the drums through the early learning stages,” he said. Fellow RHS senior and 50 Cal band mate Turner also started his guitar training in Estrada’s Jam Sessions. “It was a good starting point,” said Turner, who will continue his studies at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. “I learned something new every time I went, and Mr. Estrada was really encouraging. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t be where I am musically if I hadn’t gone to Jam Sessions when I was in middle school.”

position to leaving the Ramona tower unstaffed. The letter also would be shared among the the area’s congressional delegation. “It’s incumbent upon us to share this information with the federal government and have them seek a wiser solution than the half a million dollars or so it would cost them to maintain the operation of this base,’’ Roberts said. Cal Fire responds to more than 400 calls annually and is responsible for protecting more than 1.7 million acres, including U.S. Forest Service land. During larger fires, up to 18 aircraft can operate out of the Ramona airport, coordinated by air traffic controllers, Jacob said. “Without controllers in the tower, no one would be available to perform the vital air traffic functions in a disaster, let alone on a day-to-day operation,” Jacob
said. “Cal Fire’s aerial capabilities would be crippled in a region prone to wildfire.” If the tower is closed, Cal Fire’s coordination of emergency vehicles and aircraft to and from the airport would be eliminated, which would increase the probability of a collision, such as the 1995 midair collision in Ramona involving federal aircraft, Jacob said. In 1995, when the Ramona tower was unstaffed, three people died in an in-flight collision between U.S. Forest Service aircraft engaged in firefighting. “This tragedy spurred effort to open the tower — it took a long time to get here, and today this tower also serves as one of the busiest general aviation airfields in the county, handling more than 155,000 operations a year,” Jacob said. “You combine that with the aerial air attack aircraft, and this is a potential for disaster if this tower closes.”

Letters FreeSTUFF or FreeDOM? Darrell Beck’s guest editorial was right on the mark, very well-written and unfortunately all too true. Indeed, he’s right. The federal “liberal” government appears to have built an unstoppable coalition of singleissue voters (gay rights, abortionists, illegal immigrants, and those who vote only “color”), plus the near majority of all those who live on free “federal largess.” The State of California appears leading the inevitable trend. That will not change. Those of us old enough to remember the freedoms, the opportunities, the morals and the protections from 50 years ago can only lament the passing of the wonderful two-century success of the American Dream. We did live it. It is no more, and will not be again. Accept it. It cannot last as it is today. There is simply not enough borrowable or printable money for our federal and state governments to continue to feed, house, educate, and provide health services to everyone who walks into the country. Nor are there enough resources as we leave our oil in the earth, burn our nation’s food in our cars, close our coal and nuclear plants for inefficient “green power,” and squander billions on grants to unfriendly nations. We conservatives can holler, write, complain, shout, and support the Tea Party, but we’ll lose in the end. There are too few of us. Don’t lament. Accept it as it (inevitably) is. Support your local conservative leaders. Be vocal with your children on “real values,” and let’s do all we can to at least keep a brake on runaway liberalism by ensuring we keep a conservative Congress in ’14. Meanwhile, the State continues to defer full payment of the funding school districts are to receive, which requires us to borrow monies to operate our schools from other sources until we receive payment in full. The interest costs associated with such loans place additional pressure on the District’s General Fund. •Without additional reductions in personnel costs, the District will not be able to meet its financial obligations for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 fiscal years. After more than a year of collective bargaining negotiations with the union representing our teachers, followed by two months of mediation, we have not been able to reach an agreement that is both fair and financially responsible. The District and union then presented their cases to a Fact Finding panel February 27-28. The panel now has 20 days to present its findings to both parties, after which they will be made public at a local board meeting. While the panel’s conclusions are not binding on either party, it is the District’s continuing hope that an agreement can still be reached with the union negotiating team that is both fair and financially responsible. The District remains accessible and available to work with the union to identify and then implement the savings needed to keep our schools solvent.

GUEST COMMENTARY
Arming the modern minuteman
I
By GEORGE EASTWOOD
certainly share Darell Beck’s frustrations with the best government that money can buy, its unnecessary intrusions into our lives, and its failures to connect with the real needs of ordinary citizens. However, the current public debate on gun control is not about “defying the Second Amendment and actively working to deny Americans the right of self-defense.” It is about earnestly working together as a community and motivating our government to find a real solution to the serious problem of gun violence in our country. When I was growing up in the 1950s, parents were able to send their kids off to kindergarten school without ever worrying about whether or not their child’s flesh would be literally and violently torn apart with numerous rapidly fired expanding bullets designed to maim and murder. No parent should have to fear for the safety of their child in school. Times change and new challenges arise that must be addressed. Community and good government requires a balancing of each of our personal rights and freedoms with our equally important responsibilities as citizens to support a peaceful, lawful, and fair society that serves the common good of the society we all share. Freedoms and rights are never absolute. Personal freedoms are necessarily limited when those “rights” unreasonably impinge on the rights of others or the common good. One cannot falsely shout “Fire!” in a crowded theater, cause a panic, and call it “freedom of speech.” Nor can one contaminate common water supplies or pollute the atmosphere we all breathe and then call it “property rights.” The two fundamental “gun control” questions to be addressed by our elected representatives are (1) where do we, as a society, draw the line as to what type of guns and ammunition can be owned by citizens (that is, what weapons and ammunition should be reserved strictly for law enforcement and the military), and (2) how do we sensibly implement any new restrictions and still meet the spirit and intent of the Second Amendment? The Second Amendment to the Constitution states: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This amendment was written when minutemen were the militia, armed with single shot
muzzle loaded rifles capable of firing two or three rounds per minute. Fast forward to the 21st century: Should the Second Amendment now give a citizen a right to their very own atomic bomb, a F-16 fighter jet loaded with 2000 lb bombs, a 105 mm howitzer, a 50 calibre machine gun, a rifle, a shotgun, or a handgun or some combination thereof? Obviously no citizen has the right to own an atomic bomb, and therefore, that logically establishes the general principle that our elected government has the right to restrict what weapons can legally be owned by citizens. I fully support the Second Amendment and the right of citizens to arm themselves to hunt, to defend their home, and to band together (in the very unlikely event that ever proves necessary) to oppose any dictatorship that has usurped our elected government and the Constitution. However, unlike the National Rifle Association (NRA), I do not have a need for a 30 round AR-15 to spray bullets everywhere to either hunt or defend my home. Six rounds is more than enough as I am trained to aim well and I generally hit my target on the first shot. The remote possibility of a dictatorship coup is a primarily a figment of Hollywood imagination or used as a political scare tactic (effective only on the truly ignorant). Having served 20 years in the military and well understanding the U.S. military’s commitment and oath to defend the Constitution, a home grown dictatorship is near impossible. In the very unlikely event a dictator ever arose, no military in the world is a match for 300 million citizens armed with basic rifles, shotguns, or handguns. Effective mental health care and elimination of easy access to weapons of mass death by irresponsible or unstable individuals will make our communities safer, not 100% safe, but certainly much safer than the insanity of unlimited weapons promoted by the NRA and the politicians in their pocket. A six round rifle, shotgun, and handgun more than adequately meets the spirit and intent of the Second Amendment for a modern minuteman. Those who came to these shores on the Mayflower understood that it is the community’s responsibility to protect the most innocent among us, particularly when the price we pay as citizens is so very small — simply limiting an individual’s ability to inflict mass death on our children and neighbors. Chersten’s Critters for Kids Stuffed Animal Drive gains momentum Chersten’s Critters for Kids Stuffed Animal Drive is gaining momentum. Teen Miss Ramona Chersten Sandvik, who is conducting the drive, has been contacted by people throughout the community who are ready to add stuffed animals to the collection. “I am so grateful to the local businesses that are supporting this drive, and I want to thank each of them for their support of this effort,” she said. Chersten started the drive after she received a stuffed animal before her second surgery in Rady Children’s Hospital last spring. Since she hadn’t received one before her first surgery in the fall of 2011, she asked why and learned that the hospital receives many donated stuffed animals during the Christmas season, but by mid-year they’re sometimes gone. Each person who brings a stuffed animal will receive a small gift from Chersten. “If you or your organization would like to join in, we still have plenty of time,” said Chersten’s mother, Heidi. “We would love to work with you for just the right level of participation for you, whether that is a drive in your organization or a check in lieu of purchasing stuffed animals.” To contact Heidi Sandvik, call 760-644-8040.

Decisions indicate lawless government
The president has appointed John Brennan to the CIA and he has perfect qualifications for the job, supporting war crimes and human rights abuses in the
past, which is just another clear indication that America is being run by a fascist, lawless government and is incapable of selecting people who believe in the U.S. Constitution, the rule of law, and truth and justice. The U.S. government has also stated that it has the right to murder American citizens on American soil with drone attacks which clearly indicates the need for another American Revolution. Judge sentences man, 56, to 10 years for daycare molestation By NEAL PUTNAM A Ramona man received 10 years in state prison March 7 for molesting a 6-year-old girl who was in his wife’s home daycare program in 2007. Thomas Duane Ochenduszko, 56, said nothing before El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin sentenced him after hearing from the girl’s mother and grandfather. “A 50-year-old man and a 6-year-old kid — that’s messed up,” said the grandfather to the judge. “A grown man should know better.” “I cannot wait for this to be over,” said the girl’s mother as she denounced Ochenduszko as someone who “helped himself to my child.” “He has earned every day of a 10-year sentence,” said Deputy District Attorney Danielle Hickman. “What he did was wrong, was calculated, and completely reprehensible.” Hickman said Ochenduszko was “a friend of the (victim’s) family.” She said the molestation involved “very horrendous acts.” The grandfather said the girl didn’t understand what happened to her until she was older. She underwent therapy, and the grandfather praised her for bringing out the truth. He said the girl did not want to hurt Ochenduszko’s wife as she wasn’t home at the time. She was interviewed in April 2012 by a sheriff’s deputy and said Ochenduszko per-
formed oral sex acts with her after he showed her a pornographic movie and several other times without the movie. Ochenduszko admitted to a deputy he showed a pornographic movie to the girl while his wife was at a doctor’s appointment. He denied molesting the girl, but on Jan. 31 he pleaded guilty to committing a lewd act on a minor and to showing harmful matter to a child with the intent of seduction. He had been free on $250,000 bond since Sept. 1, 2012, after spending several days in jail. He was remanded into custody immediately and Ervin ordered him to register as a sex offender. “He took advantage of a position of trust,” said Ervin. Ervin ordered him to pay $4,159 to the victim’s family for therapy, child care, lost wages, and other expenses. He fined Ochenduszko $5,394 and ordered him to pay $420 to the sheriff’s department for investigation costs. A bailiff gave tissues to the victim’s mother and the defendant’s wife, who were both crying. Ochenduszko’s attorney, William Wolfe, asked Ervin to impose an 8-year term, noting Ochenduszko had no prior record. He said Ochenduszko had “taken responsibility” by pleading guilty. Probation was ruled out when he pleaded guilty to two charges. Ervin dismissed three other molestation counts.
Man pleads guilty to theft from elder dependent adult A Ramona man has pleaded guilty to grand theft and theft from an elder dependent adult, with sentencing set for March 20. The case against Gerald Timothy Lowe, 40, was transferred to Vista Superior Court from El Cajon Superior Court. Lowe will be sentenced by Judge David Berry, who took his guilty pleas. Deputy District Attorney Anne Marie Spitzberg said
Lowe faces a maximum sentence of four years and four months in state prison. The plea was taken Feb. 21 without Lowe having a preliminary hearing. Spitzberg said she could not discuss the victim or the facts in the case until after sentencing. Lowe was arrested Feb. 6, and he remains in the Vista Detention Facility on $120,000 bail.

held at the unveiling and an auction of a copy of the mural signed by the artist. Ramona Business Barn is at 369 Main St. at the corner of Fourth and Main. The mission of the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project is “to encourage economic vitality by increasing tourism, promoting community pride, and celebrating our rich cultural heritage through an outstanding outdoor visual arts program.” Since the first mural installa-
tion of Casey Tibbs on the Town & Country Real Estate & Home Loans building at 10th and Main streets, the mural group has been negotiating with building owners, issuing artist calls, and fundraising. Ramona Chamber of Commerce is actively fundraising for a mural depicting “historic Ramona commerce,” the artist has been chosen, and the selection of its location is being finalized. Work is expected to begin this spring. All the murals will follow the H.E.A.R.T., which is an acronym
coined to reflect Ramona’s location in the geographic center of the County — the heart of San Diego County. The letter “H” stands for historic and hiking, “E” for equine, “A” for arts, antiques and agriculture, “R” for scenic rural vistas and drives, and “T” for tasting of fine wines (Ramona Valley was designated an American Viticultural Area in 2006 by the federal government.) For information on how you can help or participate, contact Lyttleton at 760-787-1102.

Ramona rallies for injured rider
Wearing a helmet when you ride your horse? I am writing again to remind you to please put one on every ride! There was a photo in the paper on Feb. 28 about a fallen rider. I receive my Sentinel on Thursdays and I honestly did not pay much attention to that particular photo. It was brief and small and didn’t catch my attention. That Thursday night as I sat at the computer writing and helping my daughter with her homework, the phone rang. It was a very dear friend asking if I knew anything about a rider being airlifted last Saturday (Feb. 23). I had no idea as I was out of town, but I did recall the week be-
fore my neighbor calling to check on me due to a fallen rider and emergency crews being called just up my street. Accidents happen, but I had no idea what my friend was about to divulge. As my friend spoke, the horror was clear in his voice. “I swear, I never want to see anything like that again, Karen. I got their horses to my house and was stunned speechless. I have no idea who these people were but she was so badly injured and as the Life Flight copter landed in my field all I could do was hope and pray for her. I handed my truck keys to some guy that was with her so he could get to the hospital.
She was really hurt and I don’t know how she is. I am very concerned, Karen. Can you find out for me, please?” (Yes, the truck came back safely.) As I listened to the words of my shaken friend, I began searching for information. I scanned through the news websites. I posted a message on Facebook and got immediate replies. My heart broke as I read those replies. “My very dear friend Kristin had a bad accident and is in the hospital. She has multiple head fractures.” I asked, “Kristin who?” “Kristin Heinecke had a bad horse accident Saturday. Around 2:15 Sunday she had surgery for multiple fractures to her head.” “Kristin Heineke. She is one of the sweetest people ever. Joe is with her. We don’t know much yet.” “Kristin had an accident on Saturday. She wasn’t wearing a helmet. We are so worried.” I could hardly breathe as I read the replies. I don’t know Kristin, but people
I know do and they obviously love her, so I thought of how I could help. I offered to do whatever was needed. Feed horses, get hay, do housework, anything to lighten the load for these people. This was my immediate response. Of course, writing to all of you, letting you know of this tragic event and reminding each of you to wear a helmet, every ride, was something I have done in the past and have chosen to do once again in light of Kristin’s accident. Kristin was not wearing a helmet. Something happened and she has ended up in the ICU.
I am also calling out for help for Kristin and her family. I learned about Kristin and her loved ones in a very short time. Kristin is well-liked and much loved by those who know her. She is critical but stable condition at this time. Without getting into details regarding her condition, Kristin and her family need the help of our community. Elston Hay & Grain has offered to help. Thank you, Wayne and Teresa! Living in Ramona, Kristin and Joe have the animals that go with the lifestyle in Ramona, so hay and feed are needed and will be need-
ed for time to come. Kristin’s family is working on setting up an account to accept donations on her behalf. Friends and family are planning fundraisers. A friend of both Kristin and me wrote, “One day you go for a horseback ride with the love of your life, you fall off, you struggle for life.” Heartbreaking. More details will come as the account for donations is set up. If you have any way to support this much loved equestrienne, please, please do. Although I don’t know you, Kristin, I am here. Ramona is here. Heal and come home.

Chula Vista man sentenced to year in jail for auto theft By NEAL PUTNAM A man who doused himself with gasoline while fleeing from sheriff’s deputies following burglaries in Ramona has been sentenced to one year in jail for auto theft. The sheriff’s department said Oscar Edwardo Torres, 33, of Chula Vista, will be released on June 13 after receiving credit for 90 days he has already served. He was placed on three years probation by El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles Ervin, who fined him $1,234. Sheriff’s deputies received a call Jan. 14 about a suspicious person who entered several residences in the 17000 block of Ridgeview Lane in Ramona. The suspect had his face and arms painted black. Torres stole a Ford F-150
truck that was parked in one driveway and drove off, but he was followed by deputies on State Route 78. Deputies say Torres began tossing things out the window and doused himself with gasoline while driving. He lit a towel on fire and threw it on the highway. Deputies used a spike strip and he pulled over after the 20-minute chase. Torres refused to exit the vehicle so deputies used a chemical agent and also a canine unit before he was arrested. They took him to a hospital and he was later booked into jail. Deputies gave no motive for the strange behavior. The probation department recommended probation, and the prosecutor did not ask for a prison term after Torres pleaded guilty to auto theft.

Planners support tiered equine ordinance By KAREN BRAINARD Ramona Community Planning Group voted to support the county’s proposed tiered equine ordinance following a county staff presentation during the planners’ March 7 meeting. Public comments on the ordinance and draft Environmental Impact Report close March 20. The proposed ordinance creates four tiers for commercial horse stables so small operations will not need costly major use permits. The tiered ordinance approach “provides flexibility,” said Carl Stiehl with the county’s Planning and Development Services’ Advance Planning Department. He explained that commercial horse stable operators approached the county supervisors about three years ago, requesting the zoning ordinance be updated because it was getting difficult for them to operate their businesses and get their permits.
Stiehl said he held stable interviews around the county, including at Creek Hollow Ranch in Ramona. During the three years, Stiehl said he worked with John Degenfelder with Ramona Trails Association. “We’ve had lots of meetings with folks,” said Stiehl. “Most folks are supportive of what we’re doing.” The current ordinance was established in 1978, said Stiehl, so someone who started a horse stable operation before then, and have not expanded, will be grandfathered in.
“So we have lots of people who are grandfathered in,” said Stiehl. To make the tiers work, Stiehl said the ordinance will be a little more restrictive for the larger facilities. Stiehl said the ordinance will probably go to the Planning Commission for a vote in May and to the Board of Supervisors for approval in July. The planners voted 13-0 in favor of the ordinance with Kevin Wallace abstaining. To see the draft EIR, visit sdcounty.ca.gov/pds/advance/Equine.html.

Deputy Dave Dorroh, Deputy Pam Murphy, and Deputy Dave Chandroo with the sheriff’s Ramona station celebrate historic Black Canyon Bridge’s 100th year. Built in 1913, the bridge crosses Santa Ysabel Creek and is part of the San Dieguito River Park. While the bridge is blocked to vehicle traffic, foot traffic is allowed, said Ramona historian Darrell Beck, and a replacement bridge for vehicles to cross the creek was built close by the historic structure.

Ramona man dies 3 days after accident in Estates A 45-year-old Ramona man died at Palomar Medical Center Monday, March 4, three days after he was involved in an accident in San Diego Country Estates, according to authorities. Around 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1, Gregg Beason was driving a full-size Chevrolet pickup truck and made a turning movement from Matlin Road onto Ramona Oaks Road in front of a GMC pickup truck, said California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Brian Pennings.
The officer said Beason failed to yield and was broad-sided by the other vehicle. The County Medical Examiner reported that Beason had to be extricated from his vehicle. Pennings said Beason had major injuries and was flown by Mercy Air to Palomar Medical Center, where he died. Beason and the driver of the other truck, also from Ramona, were the sole occupants in their vehicles, Pennings said. He did not have information on the other driver.

Golf team remains undefeated By BILL TAMBURRINO Coach Jerry Patenaude’s varsity golfers picked up two more victories in nonleague matches as they beat Steele Canyon High School and Olympian High School to improve to 4-0 on the season. Ryan Graf led the Bulldogs in their 206-216 win over Steele Canyon. Graf fired a 38 to beat Kazar Matoian by one stroke. Mike Smith and Dane Harvey
both carded 42. Thomas Andrews shot 45 and Jason Morton carded a 45. “Dane’s 42 is the lowest varsity debut score I can remember since I took over as coach six seasons ago. It was a great way to the start of a varsity career,” said Patenaude. Harvey had a good newsbad news hole on the second hole. The bad news is that he hit his tee shot on the par three in the rough about 40 yards short of the hole.
His lie was behind a sand trap and he couldn’t see the hole from his lie. The good news is that he hit a wedge shot that cleared the bunker and rolled straight into the hole for a birdie. The Dawgs traveled to Salt Creek Golf Club to take on Olympian High School. Graf repeated his 38 to lead the Dawgs to a 216-226 victory. Matoian carded a 41. Drew Andrews shot 43. Ben Anderson-Parks turned in a 46, and Frankie Rome-
ro shot 47. Tanner Angel shot 48. “We are off to a great start. I have already seen improvement in a lot of the guys. Dane Harvey shot one of the best rounds by anyone in his first match and Ryan (Graf) has been very consistent in his play. Shooting two 38s, one at home and one on the road, and earning medalist honors in both matches, was very impressive,” said Patenaude.

Bulldog baseball posts wins in Pirate-Falcon Classic By BILL TAMBURRINO Ramona’s bats came alive in week two of the season as the Bulldogs beat Murrieta Valley High School and El Camino High School to start the Pirate-Falcon Classic. The two wins improved their record to 2-1 on the season. The same team that was limited to one hit by Escondido High School and went hitless for two innings broke out of their slump and blasted 15 hits in four innings to beat Murrieta Valley 13-7 in the second game of the classic at Rocky Lawler Field. Gage Canning got the offense started with a tworun home run in the third inning. Canning would hit another round tripper in his next at bat to complete a four RBI game. Joel Mitchell, Kevin Hagan, and CJ Broussard all had 3-for-4 outings. Hagan drove in two runs and Broussard had three RBIs. Tyler Sherman also had a multiple hit game

by going 2-for-4 with a double. Brandon Fitzpatrick broke the game open in the fourth inning with a two-run double. Jordan Farhat and Jonathon Doulgeropoulos also con-
tributed hits in the offensive barrage. “For a while, I was wondering when we would start hitting the ball. When we did, we hit some rockets. (Third base coach)
Schuler got a sore shoulder from waving runners in,” joked coach Dean Welch. Kyle Wilson got the start and picked up the win. He went five innings and gave up nine hits and four runs while fanning three. Taylor Burger finished the game on the hill and gave up three runs on two hits and struck out two. The Bulldogs had to overcome an El Camino comeback to stage a comeback of their own to beat the Wildcats 10-8 in a slugfest at Rocky Lawler Field. In the third inning, Farhat drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run and, with two down, Hagan delivered a two-run single to
give the Dawgs a three-run lead. In the fourth inning, Henry Flecker led off with a single and Burger walked. Canning reached on an error scoring Flecker. With two out, Farhat delivered a two-run double and the Dawgs had a 6-1 lead. The Wildcats trailed 6-2 in the sixth but rallied for five runs to take a 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Joey Belluso led off with a single. Canning laid down a bunt single. Carl Schwettman sacrificed the runners to second and third. El Camino elected to give Farhat an intentional walk because he had gone 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Mitchell, who in his first at
bats in the game, showed the Wildcats why he was the Bulldog cleanup hitter. The slugging first baseman hit a grand slam home run to ensure the victory. Rhett Williams, who entered in relief of starter Broussard, picked up the win by going two innings and giving up four runs on four hits while fanning two. Broussard went fiveplus innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with two strike outs. The rain washed out a game scheduled with Great Oak High School of Temecula on Saturday that will have to be rescheduled as the Bulldogs continue to play in tournaments to get ready for Valley League action.
Girls swim starts season with victory over Sultans By JOE NAIMAN It could be said that the girls aquatics program at Ramona High School now has a seven-competition winning streak.
The Bulldogs’ water polo team won its final three games of the regular season before three playoff victories gave Ramona the CIF Division II championship. The water polo

playoffs caused 11 Ramona girls to miss the first week of swim practice, but coach Jolyn Yanez felt that the attitude from a winning program was more important than the extra week of lane preparation. Yanez was vindicated March 7 when the Bulldogs traveled to Santana for Ramona’s first swim meet of the season and took a 9673 victory over the Sultans. “I’m just really thrilled that the girls came out with a win,” Yanez said. “I plan on making it a habit this year.” The Bulldogs won eight of the 11 swim events, including all three relay races. “They really came out with a lot of enthusiasm,” Yanez said. In the 200-yard medley relay the Bulldogs’ win-
ning time of 2:08.63 was accomplished by Jocelyn Schwegler opening with the backstroke, Paulina Bernd representing Ramona in the breaststroke, Kaylin Van Tol swimming the butterfly, and Jessie Gilbert handling the freestyle. Bernd and Danielle LaRosa both had four wins for the day. Bernd won two individual events, taking 27:81 seconds in the 50yard freestyle and 1:19.99 in the 100-yard breaststroke. In LaRosa’s individual event wins she had times of 1:06:38 in the 100yard butterfly and 5:45.31 in the 500-yard freestyle. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of LaRosa, Van Tol, Brianna Campbell, and Gina Lucas won its race in 1:52.37 while the 400yard freestyle relay team of
LaRosa, Schwegler, Bernd, and Lucas took first place in 4:01.33. Lucas and Santana’s Sara Lenhoff are both with the Heartland Swim Club when club competition doesn’t take a break for the CIF season, and Yanez is a coach for Heartland. The previous high school meet for both Lucas and Lenhoff was the 2012 CIF finals, when Lucas won the individual medley with Lenhoff finishing second. “We kind of revisited that race,” Yanez said. Lucas won the 2013 individual medley in 2:12.35. The Bulldogs will travel to Grossmont High School March 14 for a tri-meet that includes Scripps Ranch. March 19 will be Ramona’s home opener; the Bulldogs will host Mission Hills.

Bulldogs win four events at Bronco Invitational By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s track and field teams won four events at the Bronco Invitational meet March 9 at Rancho Bernardo High School. Senior Forrest Riley won the boys 3,200-meter invitational race and was also the anchor on Ramona’s winning boys distance medley relay team, which also included senior Tristan Stidham, senior Cesar Corona, and sophomore Max Edwards. Junior Courtney Jackson won the girls invitational pole vault. Senior Paul Mehaffie placed first in the boys open shot put. The Bulldogs began their season March 7 with a non-league dual meet at Rancho Buena Vista. The Longhorns won both the boys and girls events, although qualifying for the CIF track and field meet is based on individual times and distances so non-league records have no impact on post-season activity. The
schools dispensed with the 3,200-meter races to give their distance runners some rest for the Bronco Invitational two days later. Head coach Sherri Edwards was also handicapped by the absence of her top hurdlers for both the dual meet and the invitational; boys hurdler Dustin Hager sprained his ankle while girls hurdler Carlee Roberts was competing at a horse show. Edwards also had a significant number of new athletes. “I had a lot of young freshman girls and they were all really nervous and I think they competed really well,” she said. Ramona’s girls took first place in four events against the Longhorns. Freshman Holly Stallman won two sprint races, completing the 100-meter dash in 12.8 seconds, and the 200-meter dash in 27.0 seconds. “She’s an amazing sprinter. I’m so excited about her,” Edwards said. The Bulldog pole vault-

ers were getting used to new poles, but Jackson’s distance of 7 feet, 6 inches was still high enough for first place at the dual meet. Ramona’s other girls win-
ner was junior Kara Banegas, who threw the shot put 33 feet, 5 inches. The boys shot put was won by junior Daniel Van Tol, whose distance of 48
feet, 9 inches eclipsed his personal record of 43 feet, 4-1/2 inches set during a dual meet last May. “It was a huge PR for him,” Edwards said. “I’m really excited. He’s going to throw well this year.” Senior Javier Dominguez took first place in the boys 200-meter dash with a 23.1-second performance. Riley won the boys 1,600-meter race in 4:32.6. Stidham’s time of 2:11.5 won the boys 800-meter event. “I was pleased with how we completed. We had a quite a few first places,” Edwards said. Banegas had been accepted into the invitational shot put for the Bronco Invitational, but a death in her family deprived the Bulldogs of Banegas, her sister, and Dominguez. The Scholastic Aptitude Test was also given March 9, and left the Bulldogs without six other athletes including girls thrower Claire Hagan, girls jumper Callie Guasti, and boys sprinter Nathan Cherek.
Jackson cleared 9 feet, 7 inches at the Bronco Invitational, giving her a personal record by 13 inches. Two other girls also had 9 feet, 7 inch distances; the criteria of fewer misses at lower distances is used as the tiebreaker which gave Jackson first place. Riley had a time of 9:31.32 in the Bronco Invitational’s 3,200-meter race to beat out Mt. Carmel’s Eric Sindel and his 9:31.56 time. La Costa Canyon’s Steven Fahy was third at 9:35.94. “They were running neck and neck,” Edwards said. “It was really a close race.” Ramona’s distance medley relay team posted a time of 10:56.37 while second-place Torrey Pines finished in 10:57.38. Stidham opened with the 1,200-meter segment, Corona took the baton for 400 meters, Edwards covered 800 meters, and Riley anchored the race with the 1,600-meter portion. Bulldog softball opens at Cougar Classic, beats Patrick Henry By BILL TAMBURRINO The varsity softball team opened the season in the Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park in Escondido, by beating Patrick Henry and losing to Mission Hills and La Costa Canyon. Four unearned runs marred a good pitching performance by Kailey Hill as the Bulldogs girls lost their opener to Mission Hills 4-3. “We left nine runners on base and we looked at some third strikes with runners in scoring position. Those are mistakes that you make in an opener that we can correct. We did hit the ball well,” said co-coach Cori McDonald after the game. Ramona got hits from Adrianna Johnson, Julie Ward, Jazmin Simone, Hayley Brinker, and Cassie Jimenez. Johnson’s hit was
a triple and she also scored a run. Brinker had an RBI. Amber Davis was the only Lady Bulldog with multiple hits. Davis drilled a triple and a recorded a single and scored a run in a 2-for3 outing. “We out hit them but things didn’t go our way. Kailey (Hill) hit a ball with runners on and their leftfielder made a great play on the ball to end an inning and a rally. We will improve,” said McDonald. Johnson led off the Patrick Henry game with a single. Barrameda sacrificed her to second and Hill drove her in with a single, and the Lady Bulldogs had a lead that they would not relinquish as they beat the Patriots 5-3 in the second game of pool play. season and we will improve and cut down on the errors,” stated McDonald. The Bulldog girls lost to La Costa Canyon 7-4 in a game that was rescheduled due to rain. Alissa Hiener got her first varsity start and went three-plus innings and took the loss. Hiener gave up six runs on nine hits and struck out one. Hill finished the game in the circle and struck out six in three innings as she gave up one unearned run.
Simone was the only Lady Bulldog with multiple hits as she had a 2-for-2 outing. Davis went 1-for -2 with an RBI. Johnson, Barrameda, Hill, Ward, and Jimenez all went 1-for-3 at the plate. The Bulldog girls will continue in the Cougar Classic and also play in the Falcon Fiesta and the North County Tournament as they play a demanding schedule to get ready for Valley League action.

up to three swimmers in each of the eight individual events and up to two squads in each of the relay events. All three of Santana’s swimmers finished ahead of the first Bulldog across the finish line in the 50yard freestyle while both of Santana’s 200-yard freestyle relay teams had faster times than Ramona’s top quartet. Because an individual swimmer is limited to two individual events and two relay events in a meet, at least 12 swimmers are needed to maximize opportunities for points. Coach Jolyn Yanez has 17 boys in her program, but she only considers nine
of them to be true varsity swimmers. She opted not to contest a junior varsity meet against Santana. “I just moved them all up to varsity,” she said. “That was asking a pretty tall order this time of the season.” Despite the showing in the 200-yard freestyle, Ramona won the other two relay races. Backstroke swimmer Garrett Glaudini, breaststroker Cory Davison, butterfly representative Brandon Powell, and freestyle anchor Isaac Gross had a time of 1:49.54 in the 200-yard medley relay. The 400yard freestyle team of Powell, Gross, Davison, and Glaudini posted a
time of 3:39.52. Powell, Glaudini, and Davison also won two individual races apiece. Powell had times of 1:56.42 in the 200-yard freestyle and 56.58 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. Glaudini’s winning times were 2:06.32 in the 200-yard individual medley and 4:50.75 in the 500-yard freestyle. Davison posted winning times of 54.26 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:11.97 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Bulldogs have a trimeet Thursday, March 14, against Grossmont and Scripps Ranch at Grossmont’s pool. Ramona’s first home meet will be March 19 against Mission Hills.

Athlete of the Week Powell makes a splash with high school debut By JOE NAIMAN After Garrett Glaudini made Ramona High School’s varsity boys swim team as a freshman two years ago, he set a school record in the 500-yard freestyle during his first high school meet. Glaudini, now a junior, currently holds three individual school records that are now in jeopardy of being broken by current freshman Brandon Powell Powell was victorious

sophomore Davis Windes was Ramona’s starting outside hitter. Ramona’s other sophomore, Isaiah Spieker, earned the Bulldogs’ starting setter position. The Bulldogs also started three juniors, including libero Jake McLaughlin, and two seniors. “It was a pretty young, inexperienced lineup,” Klauda said. The Bulldogs faced West Hills in their first match and prevailed by a 25-19 score in the first game. Ramona sealed the match with a 25-7 victory over the Wolfpack in the second game. The Bulldogs then took a 25-13, 25-16 victory over Monte Vista. Morse was Ramona’s next opponent. Ramona was ahead at the end of both games against the

put 40 feet, 10 inches at the Bronco Invitational, where weather had caused one of the shot put pits to be under water and the other pit to be in substandard condition. Ramona’s girls 4x100 relay team of juniors Courtney Ford and Kelci Freeman and freshmen Hannah Farhat and Stallman placed second with a time of 53.42 seconds. Despite the absence of Dominguez and Cherek, the boys 4x100 relay quartet of seniors Colton Wood and Morgan Schmidt, Corona, and junior Tanarat Crowe finished third
in his first two individual races and his first two relay events during his high school debut on March 7 at Santana High School. He won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.42, and the 100-yard butterfly in 56.58 seconds and joined Glaudini on the winning 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. “I think he made a great first showing. He brought a lot of enthusiasm to the races,” coach Jolyn Yanez
said of Powell. “I’ve been really impressed with the work ethic Brandon brings to the team.” Powell is a year-round swimmer who participates in the Poway-based Pacific Swim program. That gave him technique and experience entering his first high school meet, although it didn’t translate into experience with the team concept. “When you’re coming out as a freshman, you don’t exactly know what to expect,” Yanez said. Although Yanez likely will place Powell and Glaudini in different races during actual competition, having the two fare off against each other in practice increases the competitiveness of those sessions.

Tigers, winning by 25-20 and 25-21 margins. The Bulldogs secured first place in their pool with a 25-18, 25-11 victory over Southwest to close out the first day of play. Ramona’s first Saturday match was against Valley Center, who will be a Valley League opponent this year. Despite five missed serves in the first game against the Jaguars, the Bulldogs were on the favorable end of the final 25-23 score. Ramona then defeated Valley Center by a 25-19 margin to seal the match. Ramona’s tournament loss was in the semifinals against eventual champion El Camino. “El Camino’s very solid this year. They’ve got some size. All their guys are very athletic,” Klauda said. “They played faster than
any of our guys have seen yet.” The Wildcats won the first game by a 25-10 score before settling for a closer 25-19 victory in the second game. The Monte Vista Varsity Classic included a thirdplace match between Ramona and Mar Vista. The Bulldogs came from behind in the first game to take a 27-25 victory. The Mariners evened the match with a 25-22 triumph in game two. The final game ended as a 15-9 Ramona victory. Due to Spring Break issues, Ramona’s first league match was rescheduled to Friday. The contest against Escondido will also be Ramona’s first home match of the season. For full story, see www. ramonasentinel.com.

at 46.51 seconds. Stidham ran the invitational boys 1,600-meter race in 4:29.27 to take sixth place. Although Ciara Lucas placed 10th in the freshman girls 1,600-meter race, her time of 5:38.89 was a significant improvement over the 5:53 she posted in the dual meet two days earlier. “She’s going to be one of our best runners in the next few years. She has a lot of potential. I’m really excited about her,” Edwards said. “I think that we’re definitely going to be more competitive in the Valley League this year than we
were last year in the Palomar League,” Edwards said. Edwards returns three assistant coaches from last year while one of the assistant coaches is new. John Baum joins the program and will handle the throwers. Billy Clark will assist with the sprinters, Steve Albanese is the distance assistant, and Bob Verhoest will tutor the pole vaulters. Edwards will handle hurdlers and jumpers, as well as head coaching duties. The Bulldogs’ first home meet will start at 3:15 p.m. Thursday; Ramona will host Westview in a nonleague dual meet.
