When the new school year starts at the end of August, Olive Peirce Middle School and Ramona Community School students will see new faces in the principal’s office. OPMS Principal Linda Solis announced her retirement last month, and RCS Principal Carol Tennebaum’s retirement is expected to become official at the March 21 meeting of Ramona Unified trustees. Both retirements will take effect on June 28. Thirty-five years ago, Tennebaum arrived for a job interview dressed in what she thought was a fashionable A-line jumper. The meeting was in a trailer next to the Ramona Elementary cafeteria and it

‘Total nightmare’ is over for Richardson Recycling By KAREN BRAINARD It’s been a long haul for the owners of Richardson Recycling of Ramona, but they are ecstatic about their new digs on A Street. “We were all outdoors,” Debbie Richardson said, explaining that their former operations at the site consisted of orange bins and seatrains. “This is like an extreme

makeover took place. This is so much better.” Debbie and her husband, Ron, now work out of an 8-000-squarefoot custom fabricated green metal building that has a warm, inviting office area for Debbie, a large opening for customers to back their vehicles into and unload their recyclables, and a roomy handicap-accessible bathroom.

That bathroom, Ron quipped, is probably the most expensive bathroom in California. That bathroom is basically the force behind their 4-1/2-year, approximately $1.2 million makeover. After 20 years in business, the Richardsons were issued a code violation by the county because there was no bathroom on site,

said Debbie, even though county had been issuing them business licenses. They had a portable bathroom, said Ron, but were told they needed a permanent handicap-accessible restroom. The couple hired Ramona contractor Steve Powell of Woodcrest Homes Inc. who helped them get See RICHARDSON page 6

The county’s Planning Commission voted 6-0 to grant Cordiano Winery a major use permit that will allow the winery to expand and hold special events. “This is a testament to a business that has been successful,” said Commissioner David Pallinger. The winery in the 15700 block of Highland Valley Road is on two legal parcels that have A70 limited agricultural zoning and a total of 19.5 acres within Ramona Community Planning Group boundaries. The planning group voted 14-0 in December 2012 to recommend approval of the permit. In addition to allowing special events on-site, the permitted expansion on the west side of the property will add a 510-square-foot kitchen and bathroom

structure, an outdoor patio above an existing storage building, and 41 additional parking spaces. The conditions include landscaping along Highland Valley Road to screen the winery from neighbors and drivers passing by. Commissioner Peder Norby received assurance that adding a shade structure would constitute a minor deviation and could be handled administratively rather than by a permit modification, which would require another hearing. “I would like to see the applicant have the ability to provide shade,” Norby said. Norby was also assured that installation of rooftop or shade-top solar energy panels could be allowed administratively as a minor deviation. “It was an end to an intense year and a half and we’re happy, and I think this will allow us to grow,” said Gerardo Cordiano.

Copper Meadows Horse Trials attract hundreds to Ramona Story and Photos By KAREN CARLSON Copper Meadows hosted a spring trail trials event March 15 to 17, bringing hundreds of riders to the

Ramona area. Along with the riders, support people, family, friends, and spectators filled Copper Meadows at 633 Montecito Way with

activity. Veterinarians, farriers and grooms were on hand at all times. Motorhomes, tents, and horse trailers lined the lanes. The event brought quite a bit of business to Ramona shops and feed stores as well as providers of equine services. As riders and horses warmed up, the riders said over and over, “Good girl” or “Good boy” to praise their horses, and each rider would call the jump they were approaching, “Oxer!” to inform other riders of their intentions. Coaches shouted instructions such as, “Sit now!” or “Turn right!” The audience stayed busy watching the busy rings full of horses leaping over the jumps. Since 2000, Copper Meadows has hosted two United States Eventing Association recognized Horse Trials per year, in June and September, and added the spring event this year. Copper Meadows has a cross country course from

Beginner Novice level through Advanced level, with two water obstacles and multiple other challenging jumps over varied terrain. The warm-up rings are large enough to accommodate many riders, and they were bustling with activity over the weekend. According to the Copper Meadows website, “The March date is an important marker in the Area VI calendar which was success-

fully filled by 3-Day Ranch for a number of years. Two weeks before Galway Downs’ spring Event and three-day, the HT now at Copper Meadows will provide a preparation for riders looking to ready themselves for FEI competition at Galway, or gain one more qualifying score as they prepare for the upcoming FEI season.“ More information is at coppermeadows.com.

Jackrabbit starts stress the engine, transmission, and differential. Riding the brake pedal, or consistently stopping at the last instant, damages the brakes. Shifting from “Reverse” to a forward gear while the car is still moving backward can harm the transmission. And hitting potholes causes suspension and tire damage and ruins wheel alignment. Do as the race car drivers do, pretend there is a egg under the gas pedal and DO NOT break the egg, in other words be very smooth, you will be very surprised how much these tips will help your gas mileage and vehicle repairs will go down.

Green pleads guilty to vehicular manslaughter in 2011 death By NEAL PUTNAM A Ramona man pleaded guilty March 13 to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the 2011 death of one passenger in his car. Harold Lee Green Jr., 50, also pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily injury to another passenger in the same incident that killed Mark Andrew Jones, 52, of Ramona on Nov. 12, 2011. “The deal is he’ll do a year in jail with six years and eight months (suspended),” said Paul Pfingst, Green’s attorney, after the sentencing. Deputy District Attorney Andrew Aguilar said Green may be placed on probation and the maximum sentence is six years and eight months in prison. Sentencing was set for April 17 in El Cajon Superior Court.

Judge John Thompson dismissed a duplicate charge after Green pleaded guilty to the other two counts. He remains free on his own recognizance on condition he abstains from alcohol and does not drive. Green had been facing an April 4 trial. The other passenger who was injured was Michael McComack, 56. Green was also injured. Aguilar said Green’s blood/alcohol level after the crash was .24, which is three times the legal limit. Green was driving a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda southbound on Ashley Road from Telford Lane at a high rate of speed and he apparently tried to turn, causing the vehicle to hit a street sign and then a retaining wall, according to court records. Jones was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over.

The owner of Oak Tree Ranch, a manufactured housing community on Black Canyon Road, plans to convert the leasehold development to a residentowned community. Bert Caster, the owner and operator, asked the Ramona Community Planning Group (RCPG) for approval at its March meeting, saying no neighbors have spoken against the conversion and the majority of residents are in favor of it. The community, built in 1965, has 119 home sites, an office, and recreational facilities. RCPG Secretary Kristi Mansolf said Oak Tree Ranch community is allowed 255 units and has a package wastewater treatment plant that was recently expanded. The planning group unanimously approved converting the community to resident-owned. Chair Jim Piva called it “Ramona’s best-kept secret.”

all the permits, which Debbie said was a “total nightmare.” “We wouldn’t be anywhere without Steve,” said Ron. “He’s just been absolutely a life saver to us,” agreed Debbie. Powell said he warned them that the process would be costly and lengthy, but they said they had no choice because otherwise they would have to shut their doors. They owned the land and equipment, and had a loyal following, he said. The Richardsons could probably write a book on all the obstacles they faced through the course of the project as they kept shelling out money. “It was sort of a comedy of errors when you think about the amount of work

that went into that project,” said Powell. Most people would have been frustrated, he added, but the Richardsons were frugal and “have the patience of saints.” To install a bathroom that would connect to the sewer, not only did the Richardsons have to deal with the Ramona Municipal Water District but they had to obtain a permit from Caltrans. They had to fund the extension of a sewer main from B Street to their property, which included running a line on State Route 78. Through the entire process, the Richardsons and Powell sought to use as many local business people as possible, including Architect Carole Wylie. The Richardsons praised the design and construction of the building. “It’s really put together nice,” said Ron, adding that it’s insulated and has skylights. “Steve really thought it out...so much potential so it could be a fantastic building for anyone to en-

joy,” Debbie said. Toward the back of the office is a small kitchen area. “We never leave. Just enough for us to warm up something,” noted Debbie. Powell even incorporated what appears to be an old bank teller window made of brass that had been laying around the recycling center for years, Ron said. The window is where customers bring their tickets to Debbie, who then pays them for their recyclables. NMLS# 260434 • DRE# 01101300

The couple explained the procedure for bringing in recycling materials. After customers back their vehicles into the building and the items are unloaded onto sorting tables, they can then park their vehicles, said Debbie. “We sort it and weigh it and then give them a ticket and they bring it to the window,” said Ron. Noting that music can even be piped outside, Debbie said, “We tried to think of every comfort.” Churches in town, she said, will bring boxes of bread for them to distribute to those in need. Debbie said she knows of many who have lost jobs and are moving out of town, as they have brought items to the recycling center. She also meets people relocating to Ramona because they bring their moving boxes. In addition to cardboard, the recycling center accepts CRV plastic, cans, food and beverage glass containers, newspapers, appliances, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and lead-acid auto batteries. “We had to build a special room with ventilation

for car batteries,” said Ron. There is also a nice spot in front of the office doors for Rufus, the Richardsons’ 13-year-old dog who likes to socialize. “He is an icon here,” said Debbie. Rufus was born on Christmas Day in a school bus that was once on their property, Ron said. He was the only dog in the litter and he found a home with the Richardsons. Many repeat customers bring Rufus treats, and he recognizes their cars. “He can tell when they drive up and he greets them,” Debbie said. With all the improvements, the Richardsons said it is much easier to conduct business. “We are open now even when it rains,” said Debbie. “What’s nice is everyone is so happy for us.” “The Richardsons are one of a kind,” said Powell. Noting all they went through, he said, “They still come out smiling.”

For a list of many of the local businesses involved in the building project, see complete article on ramonasentinel.com.

Richardsons host March 30 event To celebrate its new facility, Richardson Recycling will conduct a ribbon cutting and host a Smart Energy/Recycle Information Day on Saturday, March 30. The event will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the recycling center, 1018 A St. Representatives from San Diego Gas & Electric will be on hand to explain how customers can save money on their bills. Representatives from San Diego County Department of Environmental Health will provide information on the disposal of fluorescent lamps and have containers available for disposal.

Mystery sign unearthed Ron and Debbie Richardson want to know if anyone has information about a sign that was found buried deep on their property. During grading, Art Thompson found a large arched wrought iron sign bearing the words “Broadway Florist.” The sign is about 8 feet long and was buried 4 feet deep, said Ron Richardson. Excited about the find, the Richardsons plan to have Eric Guenther of Guenther’s Masonry mount the sign at their recycling center, but they would love to know to know the story behind it. “I just think it’s so cool,” said Debbie Richardson. Letters Golf balls pose safety risk I’ve been a resident of Ramona my entire life. My family began on Ash Street and has over the years taken different residences in the San Diego Country Estates. I’ve loved every moment of growing up here, from exploring the back hills of the Tennis Villas (before they were Barona Mesa) to wandering the trails of Cedar Creek and Black Canyon. I met my husband in Black Canyon, and have since raised two of our own children here, alongside his family as well. I very rarely raise concerns about much in Ramona because we’re all pretty spoiled here. However, one thing has been nagging me since we first began living in the Estates. My concern is with the Country Club’s driving range. I’m sure most residents of the eastern half of the Estates have become accustomed to seeing several golf balls laying in the road at the turn to Ramona Oaks Road. Am I the only one that realizes how much of a problem this has become? Every day I drive by, there are at least 10 balls laying in the road. TWICE now my vehicle has been hit by a ball either straight from the range, or as a bounce. I witnessed other cars being hit as well as near misses. My concern is with the potential for glass windows being shattered from a stray ball, because the eucalyptus trees lack adequate coverage. All I think about is what if that one time my children are in the car, the window is down and one flies RIGHT into their faces! Why is there only a net on the golf course side, protecting patrons of the Club and not the street side? Go to any other range in the state and there is a huge net covering the whole area of the driving range. This needs to be addressed as everyone’s safety is at risk here. Danielle Ketterer Ramona

Right to own weapons doesn’t supercede child’s right to live I would like to thank Mr. George Eastwood for his succinct opinion piece, “Arming the modern minutemen,” March 14, 2013. Greater transparency School district facts as we know them needed at district By DANIEL WISE The values we place upon our schools, students, and teachers are a direct reflection of our community’s character, future real estate values, and economic development — jobs. Older schools require regular maintenance of facilities, grounds, and equipment. A slim majority of Ramona citizens have declined passing any temporary school bonds to this affect. There’s a “valueadded” from experienced teachers who are professionally trained, certifi-

By BILL CLARK and ELIZABETH GRANQUIST There have been a lot of rumors, misleading facts, and confusing information spread regarding the labor dispute between the Ramona Unified School District and the Ramona Teachers Association. The purpose of this letter is to present the facts of this situation as we know them. Both sides agree that the District faces financial challenges (partly due to the Certificate of Participation which was incurred to build and modernize schools in the District). The amount of these challenges is in dispute. The District relies on financial projections which in the past have proven to be highly inaccurate. Teachers believe that these projections will prove to be inaccurate once again. Additionally, we believe that the community as a whole needs to come up

with a plan to handle the future COP payments. There is no way that these payments can be made for the next 20 years or so merely by gaining concessions from employees. In Dr. Graeff’s recent article published in the Ramona Sentinel, he states that over recent years the District’s costs have not declined, but have gone up. In this same article he refers to a number of cost-cutting measures undertaken by the District including reducing the number of teaching positions. Many teachers have retired in the last few years and many of these positions have not been filled. Additionally, several teachers have been laid off by the District. Partly due to these cuts in certificated staff, financial information provided to the teachers shows that actual expenditures made by the DisSee CLARK, page 9

All the while Hunter and his buddies touted protecting the 2nd Amendment as paramount. People who are worried about being able to own assault weapons might consider the loss of due process instead. If we Americans have to sacrifice to make life better for our children, then that’s what being a good citizen is about. Our right to own weapons does not supercede the right of a 7-year-old child to live. For more about NDAA, see www.brasschecktv.com/ page/22606.html. Dave Patterson Ramona

Reasons for supporting Jim Piva San Diego Country Estates will have its annual Association meeting next month and there will be an election for one open board seat. After having served an aggregate total of 11 years on the board (several terms spread over many years), I’m ready to step aside. There will be three names on the ballot for that opening and I’m supporting the one I think is the best qualified to serve our community in that position. JIM PIVA gets my vote for four reasons: 1. As owner and operator of a successful small business in Ramona for over 30 years, through good times and bad, he knows what it takes to operate a business. There are many business decisions ahead of our association that require mature judgment, and his common sense experience with resources. 2. As a former football coach at Ramona High, he knows our youth, their needs and how to inspire them. He knows we must keep up with the growing needs of our young families for parks and recreation programs. 3. As an active member and current chairman of Ra-

mona’s Community Planning Group, he will help keep our association well-connected with the rest of our town. He knows how to work effectively with fellow board members. 4. As a homeowner and dues paying member of our association for over 14 years, he knows the importance of keeping our assessments in line and the need for getting the most from those dollars. This is why I feel we’ll all be well served by putting Jim on our board. Chuck LeMenager Ramona

Experience makes Piva clear choice So, another San Diego Country Estates election is upon us. We are again fortunate to have candidates with the best interests of our association at heart. Having given thought to all three candidates' strengths, my clear choice is Jim Piva. Jim is best positioned to work with the broader Ramona community, the Planning Group, the Water Board and the “powers that be” in the County. Jim works well with Dianne Jacob and her office, the County Planning Department and can best help our association as we work through water agreements, pond #14 development and road improvements, all large issues on our near horizon. Jim has many years experience personally serving customers at his store, building and managing a small business through these tough times and knows both the “cost” and the “value” of a dollar invested wisely. As we emerge from the doldrums of the last few years’ economy, these strengths will serve us well. We need to avoid spending money for “resort” accommodations on an “HOA” budget. Jim Piva’s invested most of his life working with youth from an early age through high school: coaching, supporting every youth activity in the area, donating time and money to projects, mentoring, etc. Jim has a large imprint on our Ramona community. During my recent years on the SDCEA Board and the Park and Recreation Committee, I’ve noted wavering support for teen-related facilities and activities and have come to believe this is the next area in which we should invest. I think Jim Piva would give the Park/Rec. committee a fair hearing and might support teen activities/facilities were we to demonstrate a clear need and rational cost and funding. Please vote for Jim Piva; his character and experience will add value to our association management. PLEASE VOTE! Bill Fox Ramona

have decreased from $53,895,503 in 2007-08 to $50,046,206 in 2011-12. In Thomas Cook’s recent letter to the Ramona Sentinel it is stated that the average teacher salary at RUSD is $78,122. For the 2011-12 school year according to information provided by the District, the computed average salary of a Ramona teacher was $70,098. To reach the $78,122 level, a teacher must be in his/her 20th year of credited service and have accumulated 60 units of accredited post graduate credits (or 45 units and a Master’s Degree). A beginning Ramona teacher could earn a salary of $39,954. The certificated salary schedule can be seen on the RUSD website. It has been stated that Ramona teachers receive fully paid healthcare for themselves and their families, along with retirement benefits. Most Ramona teachers do not contribute to Social Security and therefore do not receive Social Security benefits for their time as RUSD employees. Instead, teachers and the District make contributions to the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS). When a teacher retires (s)he receives a retirement benefit from STRS. With respect to receiving fully paid healthcare, this statement is accurate. However, it needs to be noted that in past years when teachers received raises, RUSD reduced the amount of the raises in order to offset rising health care costs. This was often referred to as “the total compensation package.” In Dr. Graeff’s article, he indicated that teachers offered a 1.62% reduction for the 2012-2013 year only. In mediation and fact-finding, RTA offered to accept substantially more in concessions. As has been previously reported, in mediation, RTA offered to accept over 9% in concessions over a two-year time frame. This was immediately rejected by the district. Yet in Dr. Graeff’s most recent article he continues to claim that the District needs the teachers to take cuts. Dr. Graeff knows well that the teachers have offered to accept substantial cuts! The concessions demanded by RUSD are significantly more than concessions made in other San Diego County school districts. All we have asked for during this entire process is a fair and reasonable settlement. We are anxious and willing to return to the bargaining table in order to negotiate such a settlement. We are willing to accept significant concessions but believe that the District is unnecessarily demanding that we accept draconian cuts to our compensation. This, we can not accept! If as stated in Dr. Graeff’s article, teachers are a top priority for the District, then we ask the RUSD Board of Education to allow your bargaining team the flexibility to work out a fair and reasonable settlement with the teachers. The entire community is best served if its teachers can focus solely on what we do best and that is educating the youth of Ramona. Bill Clark and Elizabeth Granquist, teachers at Ramona High School, submitted this on behalf of other concerned teachers at Ramona High School.

tered board is not representing our beliefs or hearing your ideas. Our community needs to see greater transparency regarding the district’s “shell and pea games” it plays with financial projections and reserves. Teachers have been proposing cuts for two years and are ready to make fair and reasonable pay cuts to our salaries, which by the way, have had no COLA (cost of living adjustment) increase in over four years. So, schools which have a record of being well run, usually attract quality teachers and younger families into See WISE, page 10

Get involved in Cuyamaca state park update

C

uyamaca Rancho State Park (CRSP) is undergoing a General Plan Update, and you are once again invited to provide input. The first meeting in October 2012 went well with a large turnout and tons of public comment and opinion. The meeting was a workshop setting with stations set up to provide information for the attendees to make informed suggestions to the park staff regarding the future of the park. Containing more than 24,000 acres, the large park in close proximity to Ramona holds a great deal of interest to our commu-

nity as well as Julian, Descanso, Alpine, and many others. Having to take into consideration the devastating wildfires of 2003 and 2007 where 24,308 acres within the park burned — 95 percent of the conifer trees burned and 75 percent of the park’s oak trees were instantly charcoal — the Parks Department is working on the General Plan Update for CRSP that was last looked at in 1986. The next meeting is set and you are encouraged to SAVE THE DATE: The public meeting will be held May 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Marriott San Diego Mission Valley, “Cabrillo”

Room, 8757 Rio San Diego Drive. Everyone with an interest in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is invited. State Parks staff will update you on the General Plan process, describe alternative plan proposals, and take your input. Check the General Plan webpage for pre-meeting handouts and materials. This meeting should provide much more information about the plan process and where they are within the plan update. They set up a webpage with updated information at www.parks. ca.gov/?page_id=27169. It includes an Initial Public Outreach Summary and a Park Information and Statistics page. Download or view these documents for a good introduction to the

public outreach process, summary of public responses and issue themes, planning process hierarchy, and other useful information. Current and future fees may also be on the GP update. The fee issue was brought up in October 2012 with most stating the fees were too high and areas that used to be free are now fee areas. This information on the website will provide maps, information regarding cultural and biological resources, and much more. State Parks says, “Your input is greatly appreciated as we develop the General Plan. We would welcome your questions, comments and concerns via e-mail at enviro@parks.ca.gov.” I hope to see you there!

In his later years he enjoyed fishing the lakes, and being of service to the community, cutting and delivering firewood and volunteering his time at the IN HIS STEPS Christian Homes. Jon is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Jon Jr.; daughter, Chandra; sister, Erin; brother, Jim; nephew, James, Trevor and Emmanuel; nieces, Heather, Elizabeth, Anneliesia and Clairissa; and grandchildren, Trenton and Hailey. Katherine “Kathy” Anne Laws 1951 – 2013

Kathy Laws passed away peacefully at her home on March 13, 2013, after a brave battle with cancer, with her husband Bob by her side. Kathy was born January 31, 1951, in Lakeside, CA, to John and Shirley Semenick, the second of six children.

The family moved to Ramona when Kathy was in 8th grade. She graduated from Ramona High School in 1969. She met her husband of 43 years, Bob, at Ramona High School. They were wed on November 21, 1970, and had three children, Kimberly (Chris) Jelinek, Jeff (Yoly) Laws, and Marcie Laws. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Emma and Alyssa Jelinek (Kim), Erika and Emily Laws (Jeff), Robert De Los Santos (Jeff), and Evan Laws (Marcie); her mother, Shirley Semenick; siblings, Susan Gossman, Niki Pancer, John Semenick, Steve Semenick and Peter Semenick; along with numerous nieces and nephews. While Kathy mainly spent her life being a stay-athome mom, she also was a Teacher’s Aide with the Ramona School district for more than a decade. Her devotion to all children was apparent by the hours she spent getting involved with PTA, being a room mother, and her work as a Teacher’s Aide, plus the time she lovingly spent babysitting and caring for all of her

grandchildren. In addition to spending time with her grandkids, she and Bob enjoyed traveling and particularly liked to follow the Padres and see them play out of town games. She also enjoyed trips to New York City, a girls’ trip to Paris with her sisters, and an Alaskan Cruise with Bob. Kathy also loved playing Bunco and was part of a local Bunco group for many years. Her funeral will be on March 23, 2013, at 11am at the Ramona Cemetery. A reception to celebrate her life will follow immediately at her son Jeff’s residence. The Laws family wishes to thank Elizabeth Hospice for providing such wonderful, compassionate care during the final days of her life. Bonham Bros & Stewart Mortuary is assisting the family. their community, sustaining economic growth with increasing property values. Ramona schools’ performances have consistently demonstrated an ongoing team effort, up to this point in time, resulting in progressive, higher academic student scores with ongoing college advancements. Isn’t this part of the current school reform proposals — to base a teacher’s COLA% upon the achievement of their students? Dr. Graeff and his rubber-stamp school board are going in the complete opposite direction, forcing teachers and students to punitively pay for their administrative blunders, without any approval from teachers, RTA, PTA or local community input, except when residents tried to fight against the district’s use of eminent domain to acquire the Boundary Avenue property to build a new school they didn’t need. That attempt at public involvement in the schoolplanning process was judiciously squelched by former superintendent Dr. Schiff, his legal staff, and that school board’s approval, i.e. rubber stamp. Now, burdened by this flawed, financial mismanagement and reckless creation of unsecured, long-term debt, teachers and parents, together, need to pull all of our creative and physical resources together, so we can demand a more responsible and transparent school board process for planning and funding our future children’s education. Apparently, there’s a status quo of Ramona citizens who don’t have children in the school system anymore, and therefore only care about protecting their own personal tax rates. Imagine that, personal financial concerns driving one’s decision-making. Teachers stand ready to resolve our negotiation issues, so long as the administration is prepared to act forthright with its financial obligations to the entire community. With a failure to reasonably compromise over the “costs” for excellence in education, this district is failing to sustain positive value in children’s schools. Teachers build communities; don’t tear us down. Danial Wise is a teacher at Barnett Elementary School.

Reduced-cost gelding clinic scheduled at Creek Hollow Ranch A reduced-cost gelding clinic co-hosted by National Equine Resource Network (NERN) and R-VETS will be held at Creek Hollow Ranch on Sunday, March 24. Private horse owners in need of this service are invited to participate. The cost to horse owners who bring their horses to the clinic will be $75, compared to an av-

erage veterinary fee of approximately $150 to $300, according to those organizing the event. The clinic will also take a limited number of cryptorchids and hernia repairs, for an additional fee. Dr. Eric Davis, DVM of RVETS, is volunteering his services to NERN and the community, stressing the importance of reducing the future equine popu-

lation in the face of the nation’s ongoing economic woes. “At a time when many horse owners are struggling just to feed their animals, we felt that providing financial assistance in this area would be one of the most important contributions we could make, not only for existing horses, but for the future,” said Shirley Puga, NERN’s execu-

tive director. NERN-sponsored gelding clinics have been held throughout California, and clinics were recently offered in the states of Washington and Nevada. NERN was created to unite and strengthen the equine welfare community by providing education, resources, funding, and opportunities for collaboration to equine rescues. NERN also

develops and provides proactive programs to assist horse owners. To participate in the Ramona gelding clinic, horse owners may contact NERN at nationalequine@gmail.com or 760-4192462. Creek Hollow Ranch is at 25279 Creek Hollow Drive. For more information on the gelding program, or to donate, go to www.nationalequine.org.

wasn’t until later that she learned a key member of the interview panel suspected she was pregnant, but of course couldn’t ask. “I was lucky enough that they hired me anyway,” she said. That was 1978. She was hired as a speech and language pathologist and since then has played a variety of roles for Ramona Unified School District. During that time, she and husband Terry, who retired a year and a half ago as a teacher at Montecito High School, raised three children in Ramona: Bethany is a teacher, Jeddy works in law enforcement, and Amber is married to a U.S. Marine staff sergeant and lives in Louisiana. Tennebaum apparently has a knack for getting grants. One created the career library at Ramona High, and another paid for the district’s first classroom computers in 1980. Among others was the 1991 grant that established check-out libraries for parents

and paid for workshops to help parents of preschool and early primary children make reading fun and meaningful at home. She also received a $200,000 and a $300,000 grant for the district in 1992, one to aid parents of children new to English and one for science students and teachers. A former Hanson Elementary principal, she ends her career as principal of one of the district’s alternative schools. While a new principal at the school could create some anxiety, Tennebaum has no qualms about the transition at RCS next year. “The teachers here are so strong and so passionate and so connected with kids and families and what they’re doing,” she said, that they are prepared to lead themselves. For now, the Tennebaums plan to stay in Ramona, she said, but they may decide later to move closer to children and grandchildren.

Solis’ career in education began in 1969, the year she graduated from the University of Texas. She joined the Ramona district as an eighth-grade teacher at OPMS in 1988 and has been principal for the past 18 years. She is this year’s Association of California School Administrators Middle School Principal of the Year for Region 18. Last year, the school received notoriety as a model school after earning distinction as a “School to Watch,” a national distinction. Her husband retired from the Navy last year. With their son and his family in Delaware and their extended family in Texas, they likely will leave California to be closer to both. “For us, it’s all about family right now,” she said, even though “we love the San Diego area.” A replacement for Solis had not been selected by the end of last week, according to the district office, but a decision may be made this week.

At 35 years old, I have woken up and walked through the doors of Ramona Fitness Center for 24 years. Yikes! That’s a long time to be doing the same thing, in the same building, in the same town. You may be in the same shoes as me. We get up, shower, get ready, make the commute, and walk in the doors of our places of business, jobs, or schools and colleges. It’s a grind, let’s face it. Day after day, week after monotonous week, year after faster passing year. I’m not going to lie. It’s tough to stay motivated and keep that once youthful passion at 100%. My goal this week is to give you a few keys to keeping your chin up, your path directed, and your passion progressive. Are you in? I’m in, because in reality, I’m really preaching to myself! I experience burnout and need to rekindle that fire that drove me to risk it all and chase my dream. Let’s get this started. My Three Keys to Staying Motivated in Your Daily Living: Enjoy some quiet time It’s critical to sit back and digest the day, reflect on family and life and give thanks for your blessings. A time of prayer, meditation, and contemplation doesn’t have to be first thing in the morning. It can be anytime of day, during your commute, on a hike, or my favorite, in the shower while my iPhone plays worship music. The key is to do it and do it when it works best for you and when you’re alone. Re-educate and set and review goals often This is key for me. Being a business owner and personal trainer, it is critical that I stay up on current trends and information. One way to do this is to at-

tend trade shows, subscribe to magazines in your area of work, and go to workshops. You work for some big corporation. You’re just an employee. Well if that is your thinking, that will be your reality. Start thinking like the CEO, start reading like the president of the company. Read books, seek out mentorship, and start setting goals to succeed. Look at those goals at one month, six months, and a year, and see where you go in your company, in your business, and in life. Enjoy the small things in life It could be the sound of the ocean, the coolness of a autumn breeze against your face. Maybe it’s the smell of freshly cut grass or freshly brewed coffee. Enjoy the simple small things in life. Stop for a moment and watch your kids, or without being weird, watch kids at a playground in play. They are in the moment, in the now, and all that matters is what’s in front of them at that moment. They are full-filled and content. They are not worried about their homework or chores. Most of what we as adults worry about won’t ever happen anyway, so take a lesson from the youth and enjoy the small things in life. These on face value, insignificant things keep us going and give us joy. In your job and in your life, appreciate these invaluable nuggets of nirvana! Ramona, quiet down, get educated and enjoy the small things in life! Good luck and check out my websites www.ramonafitness.com and www.ramonastrainer.com for articles, workouts, videos, and how you can get started on your path to you, only better!

Free WiFi could cost you Public wireless Internet access is everywhere today. Many businesses, hotels, and even some government agencies offer free Internet access to their clientele. These access points (known as WiFi hotspots) allow you to connect to the Internet while away from home or the office. However, just because it’s free to use doesn’t

mean it’s the safest option. When you join a public WiFi hotspot, you are becoming part of a network of other users connected to the same hotspot. This can leave you vulnerable to an attack by a hacker who is also connected to the WiFi hotspot. Following some simple steps will lower your profile and help minimize your risk of attack. 1) If you don’t need it,

don’t connect. Consider your current activity and, if it doesn’t require being connected to the Internet, disconnect from the WiFi hotspot until you do need it. Many devices can also be set to automatically connect to an open public WiFi hotspot when detected. This feature should be turned off to give you control of what hotspots you connect to and when. 2) Turn off file sharing. With Windows Vista and later, this can easily be done when you connect to the hotspot for the first time. Windows will ask for the network type and you should select “Public.” Windows will then automatically configure itself

to prevent files from being shared. 3) Leave the banking and financial transactions for the home or office. The less sensitive information you enter into your device while connected to a public network, the less the hackers can gain from you. If you must make an emergency banking transaction, use your smartphone’s data connection rather than the public WiFi, and ensure you use the institution's app to complete your transactions. 4) Watch out for the Peeping Tom. Gathering information doesn’t require a high tech approach. Be aware of your surroundings. Can that person behind you look over your shoul-

You can make a simple check by looking at the site’s address in the address bar. An un-secure website will look like http://www. example.com. A secure website will have the letter s appended to the http section such as https://www. example.com This https indicates that the website is using encryption to code the communications between yourself and the website. Cheers vs. Leahy’s

Bar owner welcomes feedback

Re-naming Cheers Bar & Grill “Leahy’s Irish Pub & Grill” for St. Patrick’s Day proved so successful that owner Sean Leahy is considering a permanent switch. “We did it as a promotion for St. Patrick’s Day, but everyone likes it,” Leahy said. About 400 to 500 people strolled into the pub throughout the Irish holiday, with many ordering corned beef and cabbage and buying T-shirts printed with “Leahy’s,” he said. Musician Mike Gardner played Irish tunes on his acoustic guitar.

He was born in a small Middle Eastern village the son of a Jewish carpenter. He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never went to college. For three years he was an itinerant preacher. The tide of popular opinion turned against Him and His friends deserted Him. The authorities held a trial and He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed tomb, yet all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life —adapted from a sermon by Dr James Allan Francis

“It was a fun day,” the bar owner said. Leahy, who operates the bar with fiancée Sandy Haney, bought Cheers 10 years ago, but said it’s been around for 25 years. “We’re just trying to fix it up and change our image. It’s always had an Irish flavor,” he said, adding that he recently changed the bar tops. Leahy said he will decide by the end of March whether to change the bar’s name, and he welcomes feedback. “Come on in and tell Sean what you think,” he said.

By MARLENE ROBERSHAW The final concert of the Ramona Concert Association’s 2012-13 season on March 9 was a real crowd pleaser. The amazing high school musicians under the baton of Director Daniel Sebastian James played as well as any symphony orchestra. The performing arts center at the middle school was packed, with over 200 attending. The crowd consisted of pleased concert association members, proud band parents, plus a lot of new people to Ramona’s concert scene. The first half of the concert featured several inspirational compositions from the 1800s and Cajun and English folk songs. The second half began with an exceptional Woodwind Quintet with Jenna Kubiak, Michael Jaquez, Lilla Baldauf, Garrett Gross, and Melanie Mitton performing “Divertimento” by Mozart. A stunning solo

versity as a music major. If you missed this wonderful concert or want to see more, the high school bands will be having several more concerts before the end of the school year. Upcoming concerts: •Jazz Band Spring Con-

cert, Friday, April 12, 7 p.m., RHS Performing Arts Wing, $5 admission. •Pops Concert, Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24, 7 p.m., Olive Peirce Middle School preforming arts center, $5/$10 admission.

The No. 1 team, Ricky Flores and Nick Peterson, won all three sets with scores of 6-3, 6-2, and 6-2. Jack Mellecker and Adam Mazzola won 2 team points by going 6-2, 5-7, and 6-0. Chad Martin and Shay Alwan went 2-6,

Nick Peterson and Chad Martin teamed up in the No. 1 spot and won three sets with scores of 6-4, 6-1, and 6-1. The No. 2 team remained intact and won two sets as Mellecker and Mazzola went 6-7, 6-2 and 6-3. The singles players won

all nine sets and served six bagels in the process. Streeter had a three bagel day as he cooked up scores of 6-0, 6-0, and 6-0. Failla served two bagels with scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0. Wilcox also had a zero on his scorecard as he went 6-4, 6-1, and 6-0. After the match the team that served up the bagels was treated to cupcakes by Bulldog girls tennis player Lauren Dunker.

Water polo coaches select Larson as CIF division MVP Hogervorst, Bernas earn recognition By JOE NAIMAN The CIF Division II girls water polo coaches selected Ramona High School senior goalkeeper Tiffany Larson as the division’s Most Valuable

Player while also naming senior attacker Rachel Hogervorst and junior utility player Cassie Bernas to the all-division squad. “I’m really proud of the girls. I think that’s huge for Ramona water polo,”

coach Donnie Williams said. Hogervorst joined Larson on the all-division first team while Bernas was a Division II second-team selection. Larson is Ramona’s first

all-division Most Valuable Player. “She did a great job this year,” Williams said. “She made some huge saves for us.” Larson and Hogervorst were Ramona’s captains for the 2012-13 season. “I thought they did a

good job of playing together and getting the team to play together,” Williams said. Williams expects Bernas to take over the leadership role for next season. “She always had the talent within her and she’s starting to really tap into

it,” Williams said of Bernas. “I look for big things from her.” Ramona’s girls water polo team was the Valley League and CIF Division II champions. Including the three playoff victories, the Bulldogs’ overall season record was 22-9.

Bulldog baseball beats Fallbrook after 9-3 loss to Temecula By BILL TAMBURRINO It was a one-loss, onewin week for Ramona High’s baseball team. The Bulldogs played undefeated Great Oak High School of Temecula (5-0) tough for six innings before the Wolf Pack erupted for six unanswered runs in the final frame to beat the Dawgs 9-3 in a PirateFalcon Classic game at Ramona High School. Gage Canning continued to swing a hot bat as he went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Canning hit his third home run of the season and then ripped two doubles to boost his slugging

percentage. “The most impressive hit of the day was Gage’s double to left center. After two shots to right they tried to pitch him away and he went with the pitch and hit a rocket,” said coach Dean Welch. Kyle Wilson, Joseph Belluso, Jonathon Doulgeropoulos, and Tyler Sherman also contributed one hit apiece to the Bulldog attack. Rhett Williams got the start and pitched six strong innings before tiring in the seventh inning. He gave up two unearned runs in the seventh to get the loss. Taylor took over with one

out in the seventh and finished the game. Williams gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out a season high eight. “Rhett pitched very well. He could have very easily have gotten a win.

He had good command of all of his pitches,” said pitching coach Josh Lohman. Ramona traveled to Fallbrook the next day and beat the Warriors 5-4. Fallbrook has a power

hitter friendly field and Ramona took advantage of the friendly dimensions. Jordan Farhat and Jonathon Doulgeropoulos each blasted roundtrippers for the Dawgs. Farhat’s blast was a two-

run homer in the third inning and Doulgeropoulos’ came in the fourth inning. Brandon Fitzpatrick then hit a double, one of his three hits on the day. Canning then hit a two out double to drive in Fitz. The winning run came in the top of the seventh inning. Canning singled and Belluso drove him in with an RBI double. Kyle Wilson got the start and went the distance to pick up the win. Wilson scattered six hits and only gave up two earned runs and struck out four. Wilson recorded the last 10 outs without allowing a base runner. “He got stronger as the game went on,” said Lohman.

“They had a lot more kids,” said head coach Sherri Edwards. “I was a little bit disappointed, but overall I think we competed very well.” Westview’s boys won by an 88-60 score while the girls took a 93-43 victory at Ramona’s expense. The Wolverine girls won 13 of the 16 events while the boys won 10 of the 16 events. “There were quite a few where they would get first and we would get second and third,” Edwards said.

Freshman sprinter Holly Stallman accounted for two of the Bulldogs girls’ three victories, winning both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Ramona’s problems that afternoon included the timing system for the sprints, so no times were recorded for those races. The other Ramona girls’ win was in the pole vault, where junior Courtney Jackson cleared 9 feet. Ramona’s boys swept the distance events and See TRACK on page 33

Track teams up with FUSION for FUNdraiser Just being able to coach a sport is not the only requisite that high school coaches have to have, especially head coaches. Along with organizing practices, teaching fundamentals, forming game plans, scouting, dealing with the press and public relations, coaches must be fundraisers. No budget covers uniform, equipment, field maintenance, transportation and stipends for assistant coaches. Billy Beane is not the only person involved in Money Ball. Fundraising is a fact of life. Who hasn’t bought candy, tacos, pizza, cookies, discount books, script, light bulbs, greeting cards, you name it from a student/athlete? Track coach Sheri Edwards is back for her sec-

ond tour of duty at Ramona High School. Edwards coached the Bulldog track and field teams from 1990 to 1996. Last year she returned to the helm. Track is a very expensive sport and is different than most sports as far as equipment needs. Pole vault has poles, standards, and pits that are expensive. The same is true for the high jump (except for the poles). Add hurdles to the budget. Shots, discusses, tapes, watches, computerized scoring, and timing equipment all are necessary and all cost money. Edwards had a jog-athon last year and that brought in some money. “I wanted to do something that not only helped the athletes like the jog-athon, but could help ben-

efit our community and campus. I joined up with Jim Plum (FUSION adviser and counselor) for his annual trash-a-thon. “We have 67 boys and 40 girls out for track. I would like more girls. Put that in the paper. And almost all of them showed up at Ramona High School (on Saturday, Feb. 21) for our fundraiser,” said Edwards. A trash-a-thon is not usually called a FUNdraiser. But Coach Edwards said that it helped to build esprit de corps. “We grouped athletes with team members that they usually don’t practice with or hang around with. Sprinters with distance runners and throwers with jumpers. Besides performing a community service, we did some team building. The athletes took pride in what they were doing. Many said that they would like to do it again. “The kids were surprised by how much trash was on our campus. We filled up an entire disposal bin (donated by Ramona Disposal). We went from the Ag department, parking lots, campus and the Dawg Pound,” Edwards said. The boys soccer fans benefited from the trash-

a-thon. The Dawg Pound was as clean as it has ever been for the CIF Playoff game. Plum and his FUSION group have been doing a trash-a-thon for several years now. “We are looking for problems so that we can solve them. Our latest project is the entrance to the school,” he said. Plum is talking about a true multi-faceted project. Jason Mandich, a junior at Ramona High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 647, is doing his Eagle Scout project. He is making a map of RHS so that visitors can know where to go when they enter the school for a game, meet, meeting, or event. “Where Jason is putting the map was an eyesore. So, FUSION teamed up with Jason and the district and we have made a beautiful planter that can double as a bench in the front of the school instead of a bare spot of dirt,” explained Plum. What started as a way to make money for the track teams has become a joint source of community pride and new entrance to Ramona High School. I guess it really was a FUNdraiser.

Bulldog golf team drops two matches on tough courses By BILL TAMBURRINO The Ramona High School golf team went on the road and lost two nonleague matches to Mt. Carmel and Steele Canyon. “We played two of the toughest courses that we play all year and as a result, we had high scores for us,” explained coach Jerry Patenaude. “Despite the losses, Cody (Anderson-Parks), Ryan (Graf), and Thomas (Andrews) continued to play consistently well.” Ramona opened the week at Carmel Highlands and lost to the Sundevils 206-323. Jason Morton carded the Bulldogs’ lowest score by shooting a 43 on the par 36 front nine as all five scores were in the forties. Kazar Matoian (45), Mike Smith (47), Mike Hall (48), and Ben Anderson-Parks (49) rounded out the scoring for the Dawgs. “We have young golfers who haven’t played on

the road before. They will adjust and adapt as they gain experience,” said Patenaude. “We played much better in our rematch with Steele Canyon at Steele Canyon CC (Country Club). Ryan shot a 40 on a tough course,” Patenaude said. Cody Anderson-Parks and Thomas Andrews each carded a 43. Matoian shot 45, Jacob Buckley turned in a 47, and Tanner Angel shot 48. The Dawgs continue to prepare for Valley League action.

Personal bests, CIF qualifying times highlight swim tri-meet By JOE NAIMAN Although the Bulldog boys and girls swim teams faced losses at the March 14 tri-meet at Grossmont High School, several swimmers met CIF qualifying standards and many achieved personal best times. The fact that Ramona’s tri-meet opponents, Scripps Ranch and Grossmont, are both in Division I for CIF meet purposes, while the Bulldogs are in Division II, made the competition even tougher for coach Jolyn Yanez’s swimmers. “They were really being pushed to the next level,” Yanez said. Since the meet counted primarily for CIF qualifying times, the scoring system, which involves points given for all but the final finisher, utilized all nine individual swimmers or all six relay quartets rather than the top five individuals or

top three relay squads as is the case for dual meets. Scripps Ranch’s girls had 219 points compared to 168 for Grossmont and 125 for Ramona. The Falcons also won the boys' competition, scoring 211 points with Grossmont tallying 172 and Ramona accumulating 118. “Scripps Ranch really came out in a big way,” Yanez said. All three of the wins by Ramona’s girls involved automatic qualifying times. Gina Lucas won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.33 and the 100-yard freestyle in 54.99 seconds. The 400yard freestyle relay team of Paulina Bernd, Kaylin Van Tol, Jocelyn Schwegler, and Lucas won its race in 3:59.58. Ramona’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ashlee Holabird, Jessie Gilbert, Brianna Campbell, and Lucas finished second while posting a consider-

ation time of 1:54.36. “The girls actually, even though they didn’t come away with a win, had a really tremendous meet,” Yanez said. “They’re doing a great job really coming together and supporting one another as a team.” The level of competition could perhaps be illustrated by the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay in which both Scripps Ranch

squads and both Grossmont quartets finished ahead of Ramona’s top group consisting of Spencer Schwegler, Noah LaGoe, Quintin LaRosa, and Ian Jacoway. The Ramona time of 1:46.88 was still a CIF consideration mark. Ramona’s 200-yard medley relay team of Garrett Glaudini, Cory Davison, Brandon Powell, and Isaac Gross finished

second while posting an automatic qualifying time of 1:48.46. Davison was third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a consideration time of 1:09.97. Glaudini and Powell each won two individual events. Glaudini’s marks of 1:59.51 in the 200yard individual medley and 56.50 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke are both automatic qualify-

ing times. Powell’s time of 57.37 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly is an automatic time while his 5:21.04 in the 500-yard freestyle is a consideration time. The Bulldogs will host San Marcos in a nonleague dual meet on Friday, March 22, and then travel to Mission Viejo for Saturday’s invitational competition.

Garcia selected for all-CIF first soccer team By JOE NAIMAN The panel of media members and coaches who selected the all-CIF boys soccer teams placed Ramona High School senior Andy Garcia on the all-CIF first team. “It’s an incredible honor for him and an incredible honor for the program and the school,” said coach Michael Jordan. “He’s a fantastic player who just matured so much this

year, and he deserves all the accolades that he gets.” Garcia was previously selected by unanimous vote as the Valley League’s Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. During the 2012-13 season, Garcia saw action as a forward, a midfielder, and a defender. He had 14 goals and eight assists with most of his goals being scored while he was playing midfield.

During the 2011-12 season, Garcia was a forward and had 16 goals with five assists. The all-league first team also included striker Alex Medina, who scored 22 goals and added seven assists, and midfielder Morgen Schmidt, whose statistics included 11 goals and 14 assists. The all-CIF selection committee recognized that the decrease in Garcia’s goals’ statistic was due to a more bal-

anced scoring offense rather than to a decline in Garcia’s performance. Garcia, who desires to remain in San Diego County, has been accepted to Cal State University San Marcos and has also received interest from the San Diego Christian College soccer coaches. “He finally has had some looks from schools,” Jordan said. “I hope that he’s able to continue playing at the next level.”

Javier Dominguez, Colton Wood, Morgen Schmidt, and Nathan Cherek had a winning time of 44.59 seconds. The Bulldogs also competed at the Falcon Relays that took place March 16 at Torrey Pines High School.

25-23 triumph in the third game before Escondido’s 25-16 victory in the fourth game sealed the match. “I think it’s the best they’ve played so far this year,” Klauda said of his team. “Escondido just made a few plays when they needed to pull out the win.” Josh Spieker led Ramona with 15 kills against the Cougars. Stickney added seven kills. Isaiah Spieker had 34 assists. The Bulldogs host Westview Thursday, March 21, and will play in the La Jolla Tournament Friday and Saturday.

five kills during the match. Setter Isaiah Spieker had 31 assists against the Marauders. The league match against Escondido was rescheduled from a later date due to Spring Break. “I knew Escondido was going to be good based on how they did last year,” Klauda said. “They’ve got two guys who are pretty big and they jump really well,” said Klauda. The Cougars won the first game by a 26-24 overscore and prevailed by a 25-22 margin in game two. Ramona salvaged a

in the third game before the Bulldogs came back for the sweep. “We pulled it out there at the end and started playing a little bit better,” Klauda said. During the third game Cody Kealy served for 6 straight points, including two aces. Kealy, who is Ramona’s opposite hitter, also had three kills during the third game. Middle blocker Lance Stickney led the Bulldogs with nine kills for the match, doing so in 14 swings and without any hitting errors. Outside hitter Josh Spieker had eight kills. Kealy had a total of

“I was happy because I got to run some JV relays and got a lot of our kids involved,” Edwards said. Ramona’s best finish at the invitational was in the boys 110-meter shuttle hurdles relay. Dustin Hager, Wyatt Scott, Sean Stemm, and Keyshaun Crichlow placed second with a time of 1:12.9. The boys distance medley team finished fourth at 10:43.9. Stidham opened the 1,200-meter portion, Javier Corona covered 400 meters, Cesar Corona ran for 800 meters, and Riley closed with the 1,600-meter leg. Riley’s time of 4:20.7 was a personal best for that distance. “He was trying to make up the difference to come

back and win but ran out of track,” Edwards said. Cathedral Catholic won that race in 10:39. Stidham also placed sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.86. The girls’ highlights at the Falcon Relays included Claire Hagan’s fourthplace discus throw of 78 feet, 7 inches, and Courtney Ford’s long jump of 15 feet 5-3/4 inches which placed sixth. The Bulldogs travel to Rancho Bernardo for Thursday’s non-league dual meet. Saturday’s Mt. Carmel Invitational meet accepts specific athletes rather than teams, and some of those invited athletes are Ramona High School students.

way early March as two teams, named Team Blue and Team Silver, faced off for the first of eight meetings that will make up the spring season. The battle was fierce, but competitive, and would have been a lot closer if only the goal I had scored was for my team, Team Blue, instead of accidentally putting one in for Team Silver. As a result, the final score was 3-1 in favor of Team Silver. Andrew Ross scored the lone goal for Team Blue while Team Silver’s scoring came off the feet of Neal Townsend, Aaron Taylor and Manny Cervantes, with a little help from yours truly. Ramona Wrestling Club 'The Pound' members place in championships Ramona Wrestling Club, “The Pound,” took 10 youth qualifiers to compete at the San Diego, Imperial Kids Wrestling Association (SDIKWA) Championships in El Centro and many came back winners. Jacob McElwee, Ryan Badgett, and Tyler Badgett earned first place finishes. Carson Dupill, Colin Dupill, and Matthew Populin achieved second place finishes. Fourth place went to Kyle Beals, and 5th place to Jason Beals and Joshua Dutra. To qualify for the Feb. 24 tournament each wrestler had to have at least five tournaments under his belt that included two association tournaments. The wrestlers practice five days a week, conditioning for tournaments that are held on Sundays, said head coach Eddie Badgett. What makes The Pound stand out is the quality time and effort that each coach and wrestler puts into the practices, according to the club. Badgett is holding open membership at the practice facility for those interested in the spring program. This will run from March 1 through the end of August.
