Del Mar school district names new superintendent

■ Burger lovers already making The Habit a regular stop. Page B11

BY KAREN BILLING Dr. Holly McClurg has been named the new superintendent of the Del Mar Union School District, the board announced at a special meeting on June 6. “We feel strongly that Holly is the person we want to lead the district,” said board President Scott Wooden before a standing ovation for McClurg from the board and dis-

trict staff. Wooden said McClurg has done an outstanding job for the district and her professional leadership has made a big impact. “I’m so excited about the opportunity to serve this district and work collaboratively with the board,” McClurg said. “I look forward to working with this wonderful community…I feel very, very lucky to be here.”

McClurg has served as the assistant superintendent for instructional services in the district since 2009. She has 25 years of education experience as a district office administrator,

A mail theft investigation has been ongoing in the Del Mar-Solana Beach area since April, confirmed a post office official on June 12. “It’s really unusual for that area,” said Stacia Crane, a postal inspection service public information representative. Because the investigation is open, she said she could not divulge details about how many cases have been reported. Signe Osteen of CalWest Management, who provides management services for about 400 homes in the Santa Fe Hills neighborhood in east Solana Beach, said she has received

two calls from people who have experienced mail theft at their home. One woman, she said, reported that there had been a number of other victims besides her. Crane recommended that residents don’t put outgoing mail in their mailbox and put the flag up. “If you raise the flag, you are not only letting the mail carrier know there’s mail in there, but you are letting the thief know too,” Crane said, adding that people should have the post office hold mail while out of town. She said often times the people who steal from mail boxes are connected with

In San Diego County, the number of rattlesnake bites is increasing as well as the toxicity of the attack. “While San Diego County is seeing a rise in snake bite cases each year, the more alarming factor is the toxicity of the bite,” said Richard Clark, MD, director of the Division of Medical Toxicology at UC San Diego Health System. Toxin levels in rattler venom vary from year to year and season to season, but typically venom is weaker in winter and stronger in summer because snakes are more active,

fighting for food and territory. “We really don’t know why the venom is becoming increasingly potent. Some speculate that with the

modern world encroaching on nature it could be survival of the fittest. Perhaps only the strongest, most venomous snakes survive,” said Clark. “The anti-venom is costly at around $2,500 a vial. Patients may need a series of anti-venom shots and insurance does not always cover the treatment.” The majority of the injuries are on hands, fingers and feet, and the most typical result is swelling and tissue damage that looks like blisters

Woman’s life saved after car crash in Carmel Valley

Del Mar Heights Village Center sale expected to close by mid-summer The purchase of the Del Mar Heights Village Center (west of I-5 on Del Mar Heights Rd. at Mango Drive) by Donahue Schriber is expected to close by mid-summer, according to Elizabeth Schreiber, vice president and general manager for Donahue Schriber. Schreiber said she could not give more details on the purchase until the sale is final. Donahue Schriber also owns the Del Mar Highlands Town Center, located at Del Mar Heights Rd. and El Camino Real. Photo/Jon Clark

Sale of Marriott Del Mar likely to close soon Sunstone Hotel Investors, Inc. announced June 6 that it has entered into a purchase and sale agreement to sell the 284-room Marriott Del Mar for a contractual purchase price of $66 million. The transaction, subject to customary closing conditions, including the assumption of the existing $47.2 million mortgage, is expected to close on or around June 30. During the company’s anticipated 2012 ownership period, the Marriott Del Mar is expected to generate approximately $2.1 million of hotel EBITDA. Upon completion of the sale and assumption of the mortgage debt by the buyer, the company expects to receive net proceeds, before customary transaction costs and credits, of approximately $19 million. Although Sunstone did not reveal the buyer, other reports state that it is a Maryland-based company that owns other hotels.

A 55-year-old woman, who was driving a black Cadillac Escalade, was at the intersection of Carmel Mountain Road and East Ocean Air Drive about 2:20 p.m. when she had a seizure and drove across lanes of traffic, striking a signal pole and a fire hydrant, according to a police report. John Smith, an Illinois resident who was in San Diego visiting his daughter, said he was nearby and heard a large crash. He said he ran toward the sound and found the woman trapped inside her car, which had been severely damaged. Smith said the fire hydrant had erupted and wa- The driver’s car was destroyed in the crash. Photo/ ter was pouring onto the woman. Jon Clark Another man, Matt Johnson, said a cat cradle was taken from his car and held over the woman so she wouldn’t drown. Johnson said there were about four people, including himself and Smith, who helped the woman at the scene (not including firemen, paramedics and police). “She would have drowned within a minute without protection given the force of the water pouring on her,” Smith said. “I could see under the dashboard that her ankle was completely broken. Fortunately, she was coherent the entire time. Anyone who saw the damage to the car knows she is lucky to be alive.” Smith said that when firefighters arrived on the scene they This shot shows the two men protecting the driver stopped the water flow. from the water pouring from the fire hydrant. the woman sustained a serious lower leg injury. She was transported to a local hospital. The Traffic Division is investigating the incident, the police report said. — Staff report

Accomplished musician’s e-book allows people to ‘see’ music BY KAREN BILLING Del Mar musician Donald Barra has found a way to let people see music happen. His latest electronic book, “Bending Music,” employs the use of spectrograms to help the reader/listener visualize what’s happening in music with a colorful reproduction of soundwaves in the air. “Bending Music” is Barra’s first in a series of books and he believes it is a new way of teaching and understanding all kinds of music. “I’ve always been interested in how music works, what makes it appealing and how to create great performances,” Barra said. “[The book] tries to get to the inner workings of music, not just from a technical point of view but from a listener’s point of view — how and why music turns us on and how can we exploit those things to create exciting music.” Barra said music is “in his blood” and he hails from a family of musicians. He became involved in music right away, conducting the junior varsity band for the

last two years of high school and he was part of the church chorus. “I’ve just been Donald Barra doing it all my life it seems,” Barra said. He attended the Eastman School of Music for his undergraduate degree, the Julliard School of Music for his master’s degree and Columbia University for his doctorate. He has conducted orchestras throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, and spent 21 years as the professor of music and director of orchestras at San Diego State University, and was the artistic director if the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. During those 21 years he also juggled serving as the choir director at the Village Church in Rancho Santa Fe. Now semi-retired, he still works as a guest conductor but has turned his attention toward writing “Bending Music.” Barra’s interest in spectrograms began 40 years

ago. As a music teacher in New York City, he was looking for a way to reach his students in his music appreciation class. “Surprisingly, music appreciation is the hardest course to teach,” Barra said. “A lot of kids don’t read music and it’s difficult to focus their attention on what’s actually happening in the music.” When Barra first started out creating spectrograms, he employed an airbrush artist to make them. As technology has advanced, now Barra creates his spectrograms at Stanford University’s Computer Center for Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). “To me they’re incredible because it shows exactly what music is as it happens,” Barra said. Barra’s graphs match the color spectrum to the sound spectrum—flutes are represented by blues; trumpets and bass are very brilliant, bright colors. A fully graphed piece can look like a work of art with all of the different colors to corresponding sounds.

“Bending Music” features 60 pages of graphs, several dozen pieces from all different kinds of music. The e-book allows the reader/listener to follow the soundwaves as the music plays. (Above courtesy www.spectralmusic.com) “Bending Music” features 60 pages of graphs, several dozen pieces from all different kinds of music. The e-book allows the reader/listener to follow the soundwaves as the music plays. “It allows you to see how music is, in fact, a universal language, you can see the similarities between a Japanese chant and

a Louis Armstrong jazz piece, or between an Egyptian sitar and a violinist in concert.” Barra said. “There’s just not anything like this out there, it’s a totally new way of seeing music happening and it’s not just for musicians.” To purchase the book or for more information, visit www.spectralmusic.com

Mother cat takes a bullet for her kittens It has been said that a woman will take a bullet when it comes to her babies. At Helen Woodward Animal Center, veterinarian Dr. Oba discovered that this extends to animals and people alike when she removed a BB bullet from the head of new mommy feline, Cindy. The cat, found hovering over her new born babies, had been exposed to more than just nature’s elements in her quest to protect them. She had taken a literal bullet and refused to leave their sides. “Mommy and baby kitties are all doing fine, but it was touch and go when they first arrived,” explained Oba. “They were all very Cindy and her kittens. tiny, malnourished, unvaccinated and very scared. It took a gentle hand to pull that Momma away from her babies.” Once in surgery, Dr. Oba discovered the reason why. The cat and kittens had been shot at by someone and Cindy had taken a blow to the head. Her determined effort to remain steadfastly with her litter is proof that the bond of motherhood knows no limits. “I like to think every mother would do the same,” said Customer Service Lead Shannon Bush. “She certainly is a role model to mothers everywhere.” Cindy and her babies are on the road to recovery and are available for adoption at Helen Woodward Animal Center. If you would like to adopt one of these rescues, please contact Helen Woodward Animal Center Adoption Department at: 858-756-4117 ext. 313, visit www.animalcenter.org or stop by at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe.

blood pressure,” said Clark who is also medical director for the California Poison Control System (CPCS), San Diego Division. “For anyone who suspects a bite, their next move should be to a hospital emergency department.” With some rattlesnake bites, no venom is injected into the wound, but because it is impossible to know if venom has or has not been injected, getting medical treatment quickly is important. — UCSD Reports

What to do if bitten 1) Go to the emergency department or a nearby health care facility immediately.

drug use. “They take anything they can trade or sell quickly, and there’s usually a rash in one area,” Crane said. “Often they will trade for drugs and the person they trade with will turn around and steal the person’s identity.” Crane suggested safeguarding financial information on bank statements and throwing away old credit cards. She also suggested putting a lock on the mailbox, and having blank checks mailed to the bank instead of the house for local pickup. To report mail theft, call (877) 8762455 or email postalinspectors.uspis.gov.

2) If in a remote area when bitten by a rattler, first immobilize the wounded area, especially for a hand or arm bite, then proceed slowly to a vehicle. Moving slowly will keep the heart rate low and help prevent the venom from spreading. 3) There are potential risks to applying ice, using a tourniquet or suctioning the wound. For the direct application of ice, the main concern is the risk of a frostbitelike injury. If tourniquets are applied too tightly, they will decrease blood flow to the affected area and might

also concentrate the venom, increasing local tissue damage. Suctioning the wound is ineffective in removing venom because the venom is usually injected too deeply into tissue. When people use their mouths to suck the bite site, they can actually make things worse by introducing harmful bacteria. 4) If bitten on the leg or foot, it might be necessary to use that limb to get to the vehicle, unless someone can carry the victim. If walking is necessary, it is very important to move slowly. Drive to the nearest phone, call 911 and wait for assistance. If there is no phone nearby, proceed to the nearest hospital.

Carmel Valley rhythmic gymnast heads to 2012 USA Gymnastics Championships Carmel Valley resident and Canyon Crest Academy freshman Andria Gao recently qualified to compete in the 2012 USA Gymnastics Rhythmic Championships (formerly Visa Championships). The competition will be held in conjunction with U.S. Olympic Trials for Artistic Gymnastics in San Jose, Calif., from June 26-27. On June 8 and 9, in Orlando, Fla., Andria had a strong showing at the 2012 Junior Olympic and National Qualifier for USA Rhythmic Gymnastics. Her performance earned her a berth at the 2012 USA Gymnastics Rhythmic Championships. Nationwide, only 25 gymnasts qualified in the junior level; among them, Andria placed 13th all around. She also earned an 8th place medal in Clubs routine. She is a gymnast of level 10, the highest level in USA gymnastics competition. As the only gymnast from San Diego to attend the 2012 USA Gymnastics Rhythmic Championships, Andria started training for

rhythmic gymnastics at age 5. Now she trains 15 hours per week in the gym and additional hours in ballet classes. She is coached by Iordanka (Dani) Kovatchka of the SoCal Rhythmics club. Dani is a former World Championship Silver Medalist from Bulgaria. Rhythmic gymnastics consists of music, apparatus tossing, dance movement, leaping, pirouette and balancing. Elegant and graceful, yet it demands from the athlete the great physical and mental strength. Behind the flawless beauty of the sport lies a complex combination of high criteria and firm requirements as to the content of the routines, the degrees of difficulty involved, the technique of handling the apparatus and overall body control. With Canyon Crest Academy’s challenging and fast pacing quarter system, Andria has been working extra hard to balance her gymnastics practice and academic course loads. Nevertheless, Andria always

remains positive. She treats these challenges as opportunities to not only embrace the sport she loves so dearly, but to also build character and mental toughness. This is Andria’s second year qualified for this prestigious annual event. She looks forward to competing with and seeing again her fellow gymnasts from all over the country. Within USA rhythmic gymnastics’ tight-knit community, gymnasts compete and grow up together. On the competition floor, they are fierce competitors, but off the floor they are good friends. The SoCal Rhythmic club has a recreational program in addition to the competitive team and is always looking for enthusiastic new gymnasts. No experience needed. Classes for beginners are on Mondays and Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Magdalena Ecke YMCA in Encinitas. Summer camp is available. Please visit www.socalrhythmics.com for more information.

Andria Gao is performing her “Hoop Routine.”

Local athletes tapped for Major League Baseball’s amateur draft BY GIDEON RUBIN Two local players were selected in Major League Baseball’s amateur draft, which was held June 4-6. Torrey Pines pitching standout Luc Rennie was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 16th round, and former Cathedral Catholic two-sport sensation Tyler Gaffney, who’s now at Stanford, went to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round. Rennie has already committed to playing at Division I Ball State. Rennie, a 6-foot-2 200-pound power pitcher with great command, is coming off a dominant senior year for the Falcons. He was 9-1 with a 0.89 ERA, striking out 73 batters and allowing 41 hits and 10 walks in 70 2/3 innings. Rennie also hit .343 (34 for 99) with seven doubles, a homer, and 13 RBI. Gaffney, one of the most celebrated high school athletes in recent San Diego County history, has played baseball and football at Stanford since graduating from Cathedral Catholic in 2009. He’s a two-time All-Pacific 10 honorable mention in baseball. So far this year he’s hitting .238 (44 for 185) with two homers and 17 RBI. Gaffney earned 10 varsity letters during his Dons career (four in football, three in baseball, two in basketball and one in track). He set multiple San Diego County football records including most points scored in a career (598), single season rushing (2,866) and career rushing (5,547). The signing deadline for amateur draftees is July 13.

Canyon Crest Academy teen publishes unique 300-page cookbook titled ‘Amanda’s Kitchen’ BY CLAIRE HARLIN EDITOR@DELMARTIMES.NET

When Canyon Crest Academy sophomore Amanda Presar turned in a 600-page, full-color cookbook with photos, poems and more than 100 recipes for a creative writing assignment, her teacher’s jaw dropped. The 15-year-old received an “A,” of course, but she’s even taken the school project to a higher level. The book, “Amanda’s Kitchen,” now has its own ISBN number, is available on Amazon, and proceeds from the sales are going to charities such as Rady Children’s Hospital and the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito. So far, Presar has raised more than $1,000 from selling more than 200 books out of her garage and at the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market, and her goal is to sell more than 100,000 copies. The teen is pioneering this effort in addition to playing lacrosse, varsity tennis and soccer at school — and she isn’t personally profiting a dime from the sales. Presar’s book brings together a number of creative influences, including her grandmother — who has authored two successful cookbooks — and her beloved cat, Tigger, who Presar took in as a stray kitten. The book features rhyming poems to go along with the recipes, written from Tigger’s perspective. She titled those pages “Tiggy’s Corner.” “He shows up on the table at every meal, so he found his place in the book,” Presar said. Some of the recipes were handed down in Presar’s family, and some are her own creative concoctions. Presar said her pork chop

recipe with apples, pecans and caramel is her favorite. She has also come up with creations like muffins with cookies on top and “chocolate lace” cookies. “I learned to cook before I could even see over the counter,” said Presar. “I used to dress up in little aprons ever since I was little.” In the book’s introduction, Presar thanked everyone in her family for “turning the house upside down” for this massive project. Presar employed her family and friends to taste test her recipes repeatedly until she got the elements just right, and she spent hours hosting meals on the weekends. Not only did she cook and entertain almost every weekend for months, but she created themed table settings, which she also included in the book. “I have everyone cooking daily,” Presar wrote in the book’s introduction. “I have even started contacting friends outside the family to join in. I feel this cookbook has the best recipes sampled by family and friends. The meal planning and parties are taken from my past, in which I expanded upon. My creative family always went overthe-top on birthdays and celebrations, which helped me compile this book.” Something that sets “Amanda’s Kitchen” apart from many cookbooks, besides the personal stories behind many of the recipes, is that there are photos of every dish. While Presar’s first draft of the book was a heavy 600 pages — bigger than a phone book — she realized the hard way it was too long and she condensed it down to 300 pages to sell for $25 a copy.

Canyon Crest Academy sophomore Amanda Presar, author of “Amanda’s Kitchen.” “We went to get it printed and it was not a good experience,” said Presar, adding that the lady at the printing shop was crying because the print job took her so long and the Presars were originally quoted $1,000 to print the whole book. “We said, ‘What can we do to get it down to $500?’,” Presar said. The printer agreed to do the job for $500, and Presar’s mom paid the amount with a check. Later Presar’s dad called the printer and negotiated a price of $250. Presar spent hours each night, often staying up past midnight, redesigning the

book, and some of the recipes didn’t even make it in. Presar said she thanks her mom for spending countless hours providing feedback and helping with the design process. “She also helped me clean up the kitchen after I made a huge mess,” Presar said. To purchase a cookbook, look for Presar at the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market (16079 San Dieguito Road Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067; www.ranchosantafefarmersmarket.com) or contact her at (858) 353-7180.

Rugby challenge aids Cathedral Catholic student

T

he Team Ronan Rugby Challenge was held June 9 at Cathedral Catholic High School to raise funds for Ronan Nelson, 16, a Cathedral sophomore who was critically injured in a club rugby match April 7. Ronan was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where surgery was performed to repair his broken neck. Subsequent strokes from blood clots formed from the injury, which caused health issues. Ronan was eventually transferred to Sharp Memorial Hospital for inpatient rehabilitation, where he continues his effort to regain normal function. The Team Ronan Rugby Challenge featured an attempt to break the world record for the largest scrum, an exhibition game by USA Rugby Eagles 7s players, San Diego State University rugby players and Cathedral Catholic High School rugby players. The Eagles players, along with key athletes from X-Game exhibition sports, signed autographs at the event. The Cathedral Catholic High School (www.cathedralcatholic.org) community and the Coastal Dragons Rugby Club (www.coastaldragonsrugby.com) along with Serevi rugby (www.serevirugby.com) have teamed to raise funds to support Ronan’s rehabilitation. City of Del Mar’s proposed parking plan should be strongly opposed In response to the June 4 Del Mar City Council’s hearing, I would like to voice my strong opposition to the Village Specific’s “Park Once” strategy for solving Del Mar’s parking problem. The proposed plan, in effect, would take private property – my 41 parking spots at 1201 Camino del Mar – and force me to surrender it for public use. This would devalue my property by millions of dollars while enriching the value of Del Mar’s under-parked properties. I’m eager to see the revitalization of Del Mar’s downtown, but not at my property’s expense. The VSP proposes to increases building heights and floor area ratios in order to provide incentives for redevelopment. The parking element of the VSP, however, requires property owners to give away their private parking in return for reasonable parking standards when redeveloping or increasing their intensity of use. Developers can’t buy and redevelop real estate, pay the property taxes and maintenance, and then donate its private parking to the City as a public parking garage because obtaining financing for a development gutted of its property rights would be near impossible. This “deed us your parking strategy” is a major disincentive for any future development in Del Mar. If the City is truly interested in revitalization, we must ask: “How did Del Mar’s downtown end up in need of revitalization? How did the City’s planning process create world-class residential

properties, and yet fail in developing Del Mar’s central commercial district.” It happened because for 45 years the City has had impossible parking standards that it largely has failed to enforce. Today, one third of Del Mar’s commercial district consists of nondescript buildings that were given permits for uses way beyond their ability to provide parking for those uses. These buildings aren’t candidates for redevelopment because they can’t improve on what they’ve already been given. I call for the establishment of reasonable parking standards for restaurants that are comparable with other coastal North County coastal cities: •Del Mar 11.1 per 1,000 •La Jolla central zone 1 per 1,000 •La Jolla beach zone 1.67 per 1,000 •La Jolla Shores 1 per 1,000 •Carmel Valley 5 per 1,000 •Solana Beach 7 per 1,000 The establishment of reasonable parking standards does not require the VSP. It can be done at any time, if the council had the will to problem-solve and direct the city staff. At the June 4 City Council hearing, the Staff Report that discussed the Encinitas parking ordinance was inaccurate. It stated that “Del Mar’s parking requirements are approximately 25 percent higher because Encinitas’ Specific Plan counts a proportion of on-street parking towards the private park-

Primary election fallout ONE VIEW The kaleidoscopic drama of Election Day has come and gone. What next? 52nd Congressional. Democrat Scott Pe- GORDON CLANTON ters (22.5 percent) apparently edged former Dem Assemblywoman Lori Saldana (21) by the narrowest of margins, with provisional ballots still being counted. The winner faces Republican incumbent Brian Bilbray (41) in November in a swing-district race that will attract tons of outside money. After a hard-fought campaign, I’m urging Lori and her supporters to endorse Scott and campaign for him. San Diego mayor. Democratic Congressman Bob Filner (30 percent) bested party-less Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (24) for second place and the chance to face Republican budget hawk and union basher Councilman Carl DeMaio (32) in November. SD Council. Democratic incumbent Sherri Lightner (41 percent) ran second to her main Republican challenger Ray Ellis (46), largely because the increasingly well-organized opponents of the One Paseo proposal don’t trust her to stand up to the developers. I endorsed Lightner. I think she will put up more resistance than Ellis. I hope supporters of progressive Democrat Brian Pease and project oppo-

nent Dennis Ridz will now rally to Lightner’s flag – and lobby her intensely for a radically scaled-back project. If Ellis wins, the council will have a developer-backed Republican majority for the first time in many years. My vision for the highest and best use of the 23-acre Carmel Valley property: Create a 20-acre LAKE with swimming, boating, miles of heavily landscaped walking, hiking, and biking trails, and maybe three waterfront restaurants and a small hotel. Let the negotiations begin! Supervisor. Centrist Democrat Dave Roberts (32 percent) ran almost even with Bilbray Republican Steve Danon (33) for the first open county board seat in decades. I hope Carl Hilliard, who finished third, will endorse Roberts and announce, early on, that he will not seek a third term on the Del Mar council in November. Carl, now 76, has had eight good years. It’s time for new leaders. New leaders are less likely to step forward if there is a possibility Carl would run again. Judges. I endorsed Garland Peed. His opponent Gary Kreep, rated as “lacking qualifications” by the county bar, is an agent of the religious right and a voice of the “birther” movement. At this writing, the race is too close to call. I have never believed it made sense for judges to be elected rather than appointed. Here’s why: Another extremist stealth candidate within reach of the local bench. BTW: A life lesson from my father: “Never make fun of a person’s name. It’s a cheap shot.” Dad, sometimes the temptation is great. Gordon Clanton teaches sociology at San Diego State University. He welcomes comments at gclanton@mail.sdsu.edu.

ing.” While this statement is correct for areas of Encinitas that have not yet developed a specific plan, for downtown Encinitas and Leucadia, the standards are vastly more lenient than Del Mar’s parking standards. North Beach Specific Plan (Encinitas Blvd. to La Costa Blvd.) requires 1 space per 100 square feet of dining areas only (not total restaurant square footage). The Downtown Encinitas Specific Plan allows existing buildings to intensify their use (from retail to restaurant) with no additional parking if the building size isn’t increased. Encinitas, as well as all other cities, also recognize the Urban Land Institute methodology for “shared parking.” The City needs to construct a public parking garage and not detrimentally burden small businesses. Increasing the floor area ratios above 45 percent can only be accomplished with off-site parking because it is impossible to park more than a 45 percent floor area ratio on-site, even at a 1:300 parking ratio. I call on the City of Del Mar to put aside this plan of forced redistribution. I worked hard for my property. I don’t want government to take my use and ability to make a living. That is why I oppose the VSP parking plan and hope others will, too. George Conkwright 1201 Camino del Mar

Walter Beerle at Union Bank = George Bailey in Bedford Falls The original cast: George Bailey at the Savings & Loan in Bedford Falls, as portrayed by Jimmy Stewart in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” probably the most acclaimed movie of all time that’s been running all over television every Christmas since it was produced in 1946. The current and equivalent cast: Walter Beerle as manager of Union Bank at the corner of 15th St. and Camino Del Mar in the heart of the Del Mar Village. It can be almost impossible to tell George and Walter apart, their manner and way of doing business and relating to people are so much alike. Hence this translation from a longtime appreciator of both. If you don’t know Walter, and what he has meant to Del Mar, you should as he has been a unique and now-rare experience that you’ve missed, because at the end of this month he’ll be retiring after 17 years as George Bailey in Del Mar. For me the experience began the day I went to Union Bank to create an account through the usual channels, which always begins with the person assigned to that function. But I couldn’t help but see Walter sitting at his wide-open desk very nearby and people walking right up to it and sitting down to talk to him in an obviously informal and friendly manner. Totally unlike any bank I ever did business with before, especially in Los Angeles where it was various branches of the Bank of America. Del Mar isn’t

Los Angeles or anywhere else for that matter; still, what I perceived about Walter’s relationships with what surely were bank account holders impressed me tremendously. And it wasn’t long until I was doing the same thing with him, which, given my long experience in marketing and advertising, prompted me to offer my help to the Del Mar Village Merchants’ Association of which he has been the longtime president, as well as my thoughts regarding Union Bank in Bedford Falls...excuse me, in Del Mar. As I said, it’s hard to keep Walter and George apart in my thinking. And then I was stunned to learn that Walter would be retiring at the end of this month, so I almost immediately stopped by to talk with him as he sat there at his desk working on his computer. We had a long visit during which the comparison between Walter in Del Mar and George in Beford Falls occurred to me. And hence this tribute, which I decided should appear in the Del Mar Times. So thank you, Walter. For all who knew you and related to you, you will always be the standard bearer for Del Mar business relationships. A wise old owl once told me, “There is a time for putting in and a time for taking out.” The time for taking out all that you’ve put in here in Del Mar is at hand, my friend, so live it all to the hilt! Letters to the Editor/Opinion

New product line provides eco-friendly alternatives to carry-out bags and more I enjoyed reading the Solana Beach Sun’s recent article on the plastic bag ban in Solana Beach. I was especially intrigued with the youth movement and representation. Evan Lewis sounds like a smart kid and his Kids Eco-club is a wonderful idea to rid the community of its plastic addiction. The fact that there is even a “Save the Plastic Bag Coalition” astounds me. It is even more puzzling that it has legal representation. Their basis on the opinion of using paper is killing trees is a farce. First of all, most carry-out bag paper is recycled. Secondly, there are alternatives to the three arguments presented to the City Council. There is a product line called Eco-Us biodegradables. These products are biodegradable, sustainable, reusable, and disposable. Petroleum and “Big Oil” have been fighting it every step of the way. I am a proud resident of the community and have been advocating this alternative here for about six months. The products not only include carry-out bags, but produce rolls, food carry-out containers, utensils, trash liners, totes, cups bowls, plates and utensils, among other things. They are even capable of producing the bio version of the plastic cover your newspaper is delivered in. Readers may view and like the product at www.facebook.com/TEAMECOUS. Thank you voters in the Third Supervisorial District Just five short months ago, a small group of volunteers launched a grassroots campaign from the dining room table at the home of one of my supporters to elected our next San Diego County Third District Supervisor. We knew this election was critical to our future because San Diego County is facing many significant challenges and this election will be the first time in 20 years that an incumbent will not appear on the ballot. On Primary Election Day, the Third District voters spoke loud and clear supporting me as one of two finalists to be their next supervisor. My family and I want to thank everyone who supported our grassroots efforts in the primary which resulted

in such a strong victory. We look forward to working with you in a positive and bipartisan fashion to win this seat on Nov. 6. With my proven track record of being fiscally responsible, environmentally sound and business friendly, I pledge to protect your quality of life, protect the county’s AAA bond rating and reform county pensions. A vote for Dave Roberts in 2012 is a vote for your quality of life and for fulfilling our county’s potential! Dave Roberts Candidate, San Diego County Board of Supervisors, Third District

Coach Corey said, “The boys scored 17 goals in four games against their opponent’s 6 goals. We played amazing soccer and I’m very proud of them.”

Q&A

Life is sweet treat for dessert maven Michele Coulon Michele Coulon is a self-taught pastry chef and owner of Michele Coulon Dessertier at 7556 Fay Ave. in La Jolla. She is the daughter of Don and Arlene Coulon, retired owners and chefs of the Belgian Lion Restaurant. The Coulon family lived in Paris, France, during Michele’s high school years. Many trips were made to her father’s native Liege, Belgium, where she said she was greatly influenced by the cooking (and especially baking) of his family. She started making desserts for the Belgian Lion Restaurant when it opened in 1977, while she attended San Diego State University for computer sciences. She worked both as a computer programMichele Coulon mer and pastry chef until she decided to follow her true love of baking full time. Michele Coulon Dessertier is going on its 11th year in La Jolla. Many of her cakes have been photographed for magazines such as Ceremony, Inside Weddings, Cooking Light, Riviera, and People. She works with local organic farms to obtain only the best quality ingredients, including Griffin Farms in Campo run by Matt Furgeson. Who or what inspires you? My parents and people like them: Alice Waters, Michelle Obama, Alice Medrich … people who believe in slow food and who are trying to change the way we eat … teaching that good food for everyone is a must. If you hosted a dinner party for eight, whom (living or deceased) would you invite? Definitely my family because they provide the best entertainment, are the most appreciative, make sure there’s never a dull moment, and are full of love for each other and life. And I would have help with the dishes! What is your most-prized possession? My cat! I couldn’t live without that purr! What do you do for fun? Ballet, yoga, leaving the shop for an hour and running down to check on what the seals are up to, gardening, cooking and hanging out with my family. What is your most marked characteristic? I am very energetic.

Furry wag offers ways for men to ‘stay out of the doghouse’ Local resident and her special Pomeranian share unique tips in a new book that’s sure to become dog-eared BY KATHY DAY Some men might not like the idea of learning about manners and grooming from a dog, but in the case of Gentleman Norman they might change their minds. The tiny, not-so-poofy Pomeranian tackles those subjects and much more, including a tipsheet on “how to stay out of the doghouse,” in owner Laura Martella’s first book, “Gentleman Norman: How to be a Man.” Even Martella’s husband Michael, who owns MARCOA, a 44-year-old publishing company that works with the military, found humor in the colorful, lovingly crafted book that’s fit for a coffee table. “It relieves me when I see men cracking up when they look at it,” said the nine-year Rancho Santa Fe resident who came up with the idea for the book, in part, as a tribute to her mother, who died in 2011 of Alzheimer’s disease, and to her father, a World War II veteran. As she sat in the lobby at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe talking about the process of writing the book and the loss of her parents, her tiny sidekick, Norman, sat calmly for nearly an hour. He glanced upward as staff members greeted him and guests asked about him and sat proudly atop the grand piano as his photo was taken. Martella got Norman, now 12, after she had to put down her Walter, also a Pomeranian, 11 years ago. Living in Oklahoma City at the time, she called a local breeder, Pufride Pomeranians, and asked the owner if she had any puppies. She didn’t, but she did have one “too spoiled to be a show dog” who didn’t get enough attention in the ring, Martella said. The breeder was so cautious about the adoption that she visited Martella’s home before agreeing to the sale.

Laura Martella and Norman. Photos/John Riedy The pair have been together ever since, and Norman helped her through not just her parents’ deaths, but also a tough divorce and, more recently, has joined in on her happy marriage. “[Norman’s] the perfect man,” she said. “He does anything I want him to do.” She was quick to note that her husband is also the perfect man, “an old school, true gentleman” who is not threatened by the closely cropped canine. She laughed, recalling moments during the eight-hour photo shoot around San Francisco – a regular getaway for the Martellas and Norman – when her well-mannered pup decided to do his own thing. With San Diego photographer John Reidy – their couple’s wedding and family photographer — on hand in places like the Fairmont Hotel and Gump’s, he would plop down on the registration desk or look aside when they wanted him focused on the lens. To get Norman’s attention, they would tempt Norman with his favorite treats. “It was very funny seeing grown men yelling ‘yip yap’ or ‘banana,’” Martella said. At Gump’s, the luxury retailer in

“Saphead” band members Joe George, Sam Chisholm, Matt Magnaghi and Mitchell Galton will perform at the San Diego County Fair June 27 at 2 p.m.

Local high school rock band plays its last show at San Diego County Fair BY CLAIRE HARLIN EDITOR@DELMARTIMES.NET

Four years ago, the Youth Arts Academy at the San Dieguito Boys & Girls Club helped bring together four musically-talented teens and provided them with the space and equipment to form a solid high school rock band called “Saphead.” Now, after growing up together and developing their own unique sound, the members of Saphead are holding their last practices and playing their last shows before most of the band heads off to college. “We’re kind of trying to finish it out the best we can,” said Matt Magnaghi, who sings and plays bass guitar in the band. Magnaghi just graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School and will be heading to the University of Arizona for college. The band also consists of Sam Chisholm, who plays bass guitar and electric guitar and just graduated from Canyon Crest Academy. Sam will be attending college at UC Riverside. Joe George, the band’s drummer, just graduated from Torrey Pines and will be heading to university in Oregon. Guitarist Mitchell Galton, an honor student, will enter his senior year at Canyon Crest Academy this fall. It has been a busy period for the boys who, in addition to playing in the band and keeping up with their studies, played varsity sports, and worked both for pay and as volunteers. “We’re playing five shows this month and we usually do two or three a year,” said Magnaghi. “It’s summer so we might as well play a lot.” The band members are particularly excited about landing a gig at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar. They will play on June 27 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Coors Light Rock Stage in the fair “fun zone.” Magnaghi said Saphead’s sounds has

evolved a lot since their first days together at the Youth Arts Academy, which he said is truly the band’s “foundation.” “When we started we didn’t say we’re going to play a certain kind of music,” he said. “We started playing covers and it formed into our own sound.” Magnaghi said he writes all the lyrics to the songs, but they don’t always end up how he has it on the drawing board. “It’s a team effort really,” Magnaghi said. “Everyone pitches in and that’s what allows all the songs to sound like us.” Magnaghi said he still hopes to keep playing music in college even though he is pursuing a business degree. “Flights are under $100 so I hope I’ll be able to come back here as much as I can,” he said. Galton, the one band mate who will be staying in San Diego, said it’s “a bummer” that the other guy are heading to college. “I’m going to miss them all but I’ll see them probably,” he said. The band’s name — Saphead — has a story behind it that dates back to the boys’ very first practice together in Galton’s backyard. “He had this big, giant pine tree, and some of the sap — actually a lot of sap — had dripped on my head and hardened,” Magnaghi recounted, adding that it was very difficult to get out of his hair. “At our first show we had to think of a name so that was it … To be honest, we knew it was a stupid name, when all the other bands were trying to get these cool sounding, clever names.” Magnaghi added that his nickname used to be “Sappy,” and Chisholm correction him: “He’s still Sappy to us.” For more information on the band, visit www.reverbnation.com/saphead.

Local couple dedicated to sharing the story of Solana Beach’s past BY CLAIRE HARLIN EDITOR@DELMARTIMES.NET

La Jolla Cultural Partners

Every youngster who’s attended third grade at a Solana Beach elementary school within the past eight years likely remembers a day when they pretended they were living in the early 1900s, doing household chores with antique appliances, playing traditional games like marbles and hopscotch, and making homemade ice cream on the lawn of the oldest home in Solana Beach. This simulation is part of an annual educational program orchestrated by the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society in which every third grader in the last weeks of school takes a field trip to the Solana Beach Heritage Museum at 715 Valley Ave. and tours the tiny two-room building, which sat for 101 years at on Pepper Tree Lane, now called Del Mar Downs Road. Solana Beach historian Jim Nelson and his wife, Kathalyn, head up the educational program, which covers the community’s entire history, starting from when the area was inhabited by Indians. The museum, a restored period home, is indicative of the rugged lifestyle of the early 1920s, one room representing a parlor and the other a kitchen. The Nelsons have gone far and wide to track down antiques that would have been found in the original home, once inhabited by Senator James West Stevens. “It’s all hands-on and the kids can touch anything they want. We don’t have any display cases, no signs that say ‘Please don’t touch,’” said Jim Nelson. “Maybe we should have signs that say ‘Please touch,’ because visitors are allowed to pick up any utensil. If they want to pump water they can, or they can open the ice box to see what it looks like.” When the historical society made the decision to restore the home about a decade ago, Nelson shopped for antiques from San Francisco to Apalachin, New York, where he was heading for a family reunion. He stopped at numerous shops along the way and packed a station wagon with various items. The museum has more than 400 antiques in it, about 40 of which were identified in a furnishing plan that

Jim and Kathalyn Nelson stand on the porch of the Solana Beach Heritage Museum. Photos/Claire Harlin was the product of years of intense research. About $40,000 has been invested into antique acquisitions, and most of that money was raised from sales of two Solana Beach history books written by Nelson: “Early Solana Beach” and its prequel, “La Colonia & Solana Beach.” The museum contains a sink with faucets, a refrigerator, a gas stove, a washing machine with spin dryer, wall phones, a Hoover vacuum, an electrified sewing machine, a player piano and many other antiques. Nelson said in addition to the trip, he received a number of antique donations and he visited a store in Oceanside once a month to check for items. “One by one we had everything we needed but we couldn’t find a cabinet radio,” said Nelson. “I distinctly remember the phone call from the man at the shop when he said, ‘Jim, we finally got it. We got your cabinet radio.’ It had to be refinished, but that completed the whole furnishing plan.”

During the third grade Living History Program, the Nelsons dress in period attire and play the roles of Senator Stevens and his wife, Susanna (“Grandma Stevens”). The kids pretend they are coming to spend a week at the 10-acre Molly Glen Ranch, once located on the south slopes of Solana Beach in the late 1800s. The kids split up, half going to the kitchen, where “Susanna” shows them about 25 chores they would have to do if they were growing up there, from making toast on the stovetop to operating a manual washing machine. “The kids do a lot of pumping a cranking, from one thing to the other,” said Nelson. The rest of the kids perform chores in the parlor, such as filling kerosene lamps, vacuuming, using a stereoscope and operating a 1903 phonograph. After the kids switch rooms, they head outside to do sack races, learn croquet and play hopscotch. When they return to the museum, time moves forward several decades to around 1930, when Edwin and Jennie Stevens lived in the house. Former Solana Beach Mayor Margaret Schlesinger often plays the role of Jennie and local parent Wally Oliver plays Edwin. A handful of other locals volunteer their time

TV’s ‘Top Chef’ alumni create ‘ocean bazaar’ cuisine at Herringbone BY KELLEY CARLSON ike celebrity chef/ owner Brian Malarkey’s four other San Diego-area restaurants, the new Herringbone follows the pattern of fabricthemed names. Yet its atmosphere and culinary specialties are unique — “ocean bazaar” seafood plates and other surf-andturf combinations served in a Mediterranean-style setting designed by the renowned Thomas Schoos. Spotting Herringbone from the street can be a bit tricky for those who don’t know what to look for. At the time this story was written, there was no sign in the front advertising the establishment’s name. Keep an eye out for a faux fish dangling from a hook above large wooden doors of a free-standing, red-tileroofed building on Herschel Avenue, between Silverado and Wall streets. Guests enter into a lounge where they can relax on couches with pillows in hues of the sea, socialize at the colorfully tiled bar, or gather around small tables. Fireplaces framed by coral crackle at either end of the room, and the retractable roof is open during pleasant weather. Several century-old

Guests can curl up on a couch near a fireplace in the lounge, which has a retractable roof.

The dining room’s unique features include century-old olive trees and a wall of glass that allows guests a view of behind-the-scenes action.

Each week you’ll find a recipe from the featured restaurant online at delmartimes.net. Just click ‘Get The Recipe’ at the bottom of the story. ■ This week: Herringbone’s Smoked Trout Dip olive trees add to Herringbone’s ambience. The ocean-meets-forest theme continues in the main dining room, which features more of the robust trees and a whale skeleton suspended above a bar. Neutral-toned artwork of marine subjects decorate the brick walls, while pufferfish lamps hang overhead. Patrons can observe chefs and servers in action behind a wall of glass, at the back of the restaurant.

The menu specializes in catches from the sea, although some items are of land-based origins. Executive Chef Amanda Baumgarten (who, like Malarkey, is a “Top Chef” alumnus) keeps the fare simple, with some unusual combinations. Among her creations is the Whole Fish Ceviche, in which seasoned slices of fish are bookended by a head and tail. There is also the Day Boat Alaskan Halibut,

which is obtained within 36 hours out of the water, according to Baumgarten. Its ingredients include beef shin, farro, chanterelle, Meyer lemon and hazelnut. Herringbone’s pizzas are “awesome,” Baumgarten said. Combinations range from Pancetta, Egg, Stinging Nettle and Fontina, to Little Neck Clam, Bone Marrow, Garlic and Rosemary. And Baumgarten also touts the salads. “I love lettuce more than any other chef you’ll meet,” she said. The salads range from Mixed Green with Buttermilk Dressing to the Hamachi Frise & Lardon. There are some kid-friendly menu items, including the pizzas, fish and pastas. “We are a neighborhood restaurant,” Baumgarten said. “Being accessible to (families with) children is definitely important.” As for beverages, there are brews, wines and libations from the Snake Oil Cocktail Co. that incorporate local and seasonal ingredients. Oyster Hour (Herringbone’s version of happy hour) offers $1 oyster and drink specials. DJs play mellow, electronica-type music starting around 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Scouts, church members build a house in Mexico A special group left Solana Beach on a cool Saturday morning Memorial Day weekend, arriving at Rosarito Beach at 11 a.m. to start work building a house. The group of 22 included Scouts from Troop 765 of Carmel Valley and Venture Crew 42, as well as members of the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church. As the group started building the frame for the fourroom house, it was joined by the Chavez-Garcia family: parents Alfredo and Margarita and their children Eduardo, Daniela, Kevin and Jhonatan. Everyone worked side by side to measure, saw and hammer until the walls of the house were built. New friends were made and new skills acquired as everybody worked throughout the day. On Sunday, everyone finished squaring the frame and prepared the house for the first coat of stucco. A troop from Tijuana came to help, the new Scouts (ages 10-11 years old) joined in the passing of the hawks filled with stucco. There was much laughter as they tried to keep the stucco flowing quickly with minimal spillage to those applying it. In record time, the first coat of stucco was applied to all four walls to dry overnight. The last day included installing two doors, four windows and the last coat of stucco. By now, no one needed to be told what to do; many helping hands worked together to finish the house. Everyone ate their lunch inside the finished house and then formed a circle with the Garcia family to dedicate their new home and to present them with their keys. With smiles on everyone’s faces, Margarita Garcia invited everyone to come back for a visit. In all, nine houses were built and along the way, cultures intertwined and lives were changed for the Mexican families and the volunteers. Troop 765 of Carmel Valley meets Tuesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. at Temple Beth Am on Del Mar Heights Road. For more information about the troop, go to the website: www. troop765.org.

Using GPS technology to treat Prostate Cancer If you have prostate cancer, or know someone who does, you need to know about Calypso, from Varian. It’s a type of “GPS for the body” that focuses radiation treatment directly on the tumor and not on the healthy tissue around it. The result is cancer treatment that’s powerful, highly accurate... and, as a recent clinical study proves, produces significantly fewer side effects. Before you consider radiation treatment for prostate cancer, find out about Calypso at Genesis Healthcare, San Diego’s most experienced prostate cancer specialists. The Genesis multidisciplinary team offers you the latest technology, the most innovative treatment options, and truly compassionate care. Del Sol Lions raised more than $1,730 over the two-day Fiesta Del Sol June 2-3 in Solana Beach, beating last year’s total of $1,600. Del Sol Lions Club members volunteered and collected donations in the VIP and Wine Garden areas. The donations collected at Fiesta del Sol will pay for 20 pairs of glasses for local children in need. Lion Dr. Kristin Peterson-Salgado, from Solana Beach Family Optometry, will perform the eye exams at no charge and will secure the eye glasses for the children at a reduced cost. “This is a fine example of the community rallying around an important cause,” said Linette Page, incoming President of the Del Sol Lions. “We are very grateful to have such strong public support for our programs and thank the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to raise these funds at Fiesta Del Sol. It was a team effort.” “More than 50,000 people came to Solana Beach for the Fiesta Del Sol this year. This is great exposure for our city’s businesses and community service projects.” said Carolyn Cohen, president of the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce. “We appreciate the hard work of everyone involved to make this event such a success year in and year out.” The Del Sol Lions are part of an international network of 1.3 million men and women in 205 countries serving those in need and youth in Del Mar, Solana Beach, Fairbanks Ranch, Rancho Santa Fe and Carmel Valley. Regulars already making a habit of new Solana Beach burger joint BY CLAIRE HARLIN EDITOR@DELMARTIMES.NET

A burger eatery that made big waves in Santa Barbara more than 40 years ago is finally hitting San Diego. After success in Carmel Mountain, The Habit has opened in Solana Beach at 909 Lomas Santa Fe Drive and will operate from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. The franchise has been open for less than two weeks, and manager Jose Guerrero said it’s already busier than the Carmel Mountain location, which opened last November. The week before the store opened there were three soft opening fundraising events, which raised money for the Solana Beach Boys and Girls Club, Duchenne San Diego and Share our Strength. At the Boys and Girls Club event, Guerrero said there was a line out the door. Guerrero said there are already regulars coming to The Habit up to three times a week. “They like the environment and the way they are being treated here,” he said. “We also had some really great reviews on Yelp.” Reviews point out that even the most expensive burger at The Habit is less than $5, and the reviews also say the quality is comparable, if not better, than competing restaurants. “People compare us to different places, but at the end of the day we’re just different, especially the way we interact with the customer,” said Guerrero. “We don’t try to save a buck over quality. We make sure everyone is well taken care of and at the end of the day it’s the customers who will make us famous or else nobody will know about us.” What defines The Habit is the charbroil grilling method they employ on their burgers. Their signature items are basic: the char burger and the double char burger. But, in the future, there may be some specials popping up at the shop. For example, in Santa Barbara there is a special burger unique to that area that is popular even though it’s not on the menu. The

What real men should eat — for Dad’s Day and always The Kitchen Shrink

BY CATHARINE KAUFMAN A typical guy is in culinary bliss with one mitt clutching a Doritos Fritos burrito and the other one holding a bottle or can of something that has the capacity to make him belch. (And if he had a third hand, a remote control would be welded to it). All kidding aside, Father’s Day is Sunday, June 17, and the best gift you can give your special man is an A-list of foods that are good for him. Protecting the Family Jewels Put the skids on prostate problems by loading up on those stinky cruciferous warriors packed with phyto-

chemical sulfur compounds, Vitamin C and potassium. Yes, real men eat coleslaw, braised kale, roasted Brussels sprouts, sautéed broccoli rabe and sauerkraut, while also avoiding high-saturated animal fats, which can wallop the prostrate. Lycopene, a carotenoid pigment, is also one of your prostate’s best pals. Tomatoes are a lycopene powerhouse and run a close second only behind watermelons. Cooking tomatoes releases even more lycopene than eating them raw, so make a pot of mighty marinara. And since lycopene is also fat soluble, eat it with some fat. Baked ziti, anyone? Fruit of the Groom Grape skin —especially the red, purple and black varieties — is a rich source of resveratrol, which may protect against cardiovascular disease. The rich violet, blue and red colors in all kinds of berries and cherries are responsible for the healthy properties of these little jewels, chock-full of over 4,000 health-protecting compounds, elevating antioxidant to a new level. Five servings of berries a day have also been found to keep the aging brain on its toes.

Bongo Banana Nut Topping Celebrate Dad’s Day with this yummy banana pecan treat that can be used as a topping for frozen desserts, pancakes, bread pudding, oatmeal, even grilled salmon or eaten straight up! Ingredients 1/4 cup butter 3 firm bananas, sliced 1/4-inch thick 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Dash of nutmeg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon of ginger powder or 1 teaspoon of fresh minced ginger 1/2 cup roasted pecan halves Method: In a large skillet, melt the butter Oil and Lube Load up on oily seafood and fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids to support a healthy heart and circulation, boost the immune system, lower triglyceride levels, lubricate joints and ease the aches and pains for athletic types. You can’t beat wildcaught salmon, sardines, (preferably canned in olive oil, and with the Omega-3 and calcium rich skin and bones intact), herring, mackerel and anchovies. Seaweed and other oceanic veggies are also treasure-troves of nutrients, such as beta-carotene,

and add the bananas. Cook about 2 minutes until they start to soften. Add sugar and spices, stirring until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes. Add the vanilla and pecans and serve warm.

vitamin B-12 and the fatty acid chlorophylone, another defensive weapon against prostate cancer. Nuts and Bolts Seeds and nuts, especially walnuts and pecans, are also Omega-3 powerhouses, and thus good substitutes for people who don’t do fish. Flaxseed is known as an excellent Omega protector of healthy prostrate and other organs, since it contains high levels of anti-inflammatory lignans, also good for joint and muscle health. The mighty Brazil nut,

with truckloads of magnesium and selenium, lowers “bad” cholesterol levels and reduces the occurrence of blood clots. Standing advice with this selenium superfood: moderation. Virile Veggies Pick a pack of purple peppers, along with yellow, green and red ones, yams, squashes, dark leafy greens, and other rainbow-colored veggies that contain powerful antioxidants to protect the body from harmful free radicals and repair skin cells.

Sowing His Wild Oats Organic whole-grain pasta, wheat germ, couscous, oatmeal, barley and quinoa have a bonanza of fiber, selenium, phytochemicals and vitamin E, partners in heart health, lowering cholesterol, building muscle, pampering the prostate, and maintaining a slim, machismo waistline. Going Ape Portable and manfriendly, bananas are endowed with potassium, magnesium and B-6 giving a quick energy boost, easing the nerves, reducing heart rate and blood pressure, and amping up the immune system. So whip up a smoothie, bake banana bread or slice it straight up in your wholegrain cereal before, after or during your workout. Pumping Iron Although most men typically don’t need as much iron as women, Popeye loaded up on spinach, giving him Vitamin B, folic acid and a whole lot of vim and vigor. Long distance runners and blood donors need to pump iron into their diets to avoid anemia. Reach Catharine Kaufman at kitchenshrink@san.rr.com or www.FreeRangeClub.com.

Summa Education opens new office in Carmel Valley

Summa Education’s founder Chris Hamilton has worked with literally thousands of students over the past two decades, helping them reach their academic goals and dreams. In some years his students account for nearly 25 percent of the perfect “2400” scores in California, and he has helped hundreds of students gain admission to top-tier universities and colleges. “We are excited about our new office in Carmel Valley,” Hamilton acknowledges. “I think we have created the perfect environment for our students — lots of light and space in which to learn and create.” Instead of resorting to short-term tricks and gimmicks, Summa Education’s SAT courses are skills-based. “We teach students actual skills — how to think, reason, and write,” Hamilton explains. “That’s why we need a very special faculty. Our students are taught by experienced university instructors or chairs of high school departments, Summa Education’s founder Chris rather than college kids home for break.” Hamilton. Students at Summa tend to be high-achievers willing to put in a little work over the summer. “But we work with students of all levels, as long as they are motivated to improve,” Hamilton adds. It is their holistic approach to learning that makes Summa unique. “We don’t sign up students sight unseen over the internet or the phone. Instead, we meet with each student to create an individualized plan that encompasses college goals, financial planning, academic progress, and testing strategies. Too many students and parents focus on numbers like scores and grades, ignoring the key elements that are important to top colleges. Good students need good scores, but they also need more. We help students find their purpose and voice so they can tell a great story.” Summa Education’s new Carmel Valley office is located at 11250 El Camino Real, Suite #105, San Diego, 92130. They also offer classes in the 4S Ranch/Rancho Bernardo area at 9050 Maranatha Drive. Phone: 858-793-8880; Website: www.summaeducation. com.

Del Mar Rotarians Steve Quigg, Betsy Jones, Marta Hoyt and Klaus Gubernator paint the American Combat Veterans of Way therapy room on April 28.

Rotaract Club members show their support for Nativity Prep Academy serving low-income youth in inner-city San Diego.

Rotary Corner

Del Mar Rotarians at work in the community BY EMILY FIGUEIREDO, PUBLICITY CHAIR On Saturday, April 28, the Rotary Club of Del Mar got to work. They grabbed fellow Rotarians, family members, Rotaract members (Rotary for college students) and friends to spruce up three facilities that needed a little care and attention in our local community. This effort joined hundreds of thousands of other Rotarians worldwide serving their local communities on the 7th annual Rotarians At Work Day. Del Mar Rotarian and local interior designer Corena Kessel had a vision for using her talents in design for the good work that Rotary can accomplish for others. When Bill Rider, CEO of the American Combat Veterans of War (ACVOW), spoke to the Rotary Club about the work they do with soldiers and Post Traumatic Stress therapy, Corena knew this could be an opportunity to give back. With the assistance of 12 other Rotarians and donated goods made by local businesses, the ACVOW family therapy room was transformed with painted walls, hanging flags, window treatments, indoor plants, rugs and more. The Rotary Club of Del Mar also continued its partnership with Nativity Prep Academy in San Diego on April 28. Nativity Prep Academy is an accredited, tuition-free middle school serving more than 60 low-income middle school students and another 100 high school and college students. Del Mar Rotarians linked with a local Rotaract Club to spruce up the facilities for these very deserving children and youth. Del Mar Rotarians also spent time on the continued work at the San Dieguito River Park. The club has been supporting the ecological efforts near the San Dieguito Lagoon with planting efforts, trail maintenance and sustainability projects for many years. If you would like to learn how the Rotary Club of Del Mar serves those locally and globally on a daily basis, please join us for a meeting on Thursdays at noon at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Visit www.delmarrotary.org for more information.

One staffer at The Inn greeted the pair last week and, as he looked over the book, he noted that Martella who strikes modellike poses – not because she has modeled before but because of her knowledge from her career as a fashion coordinator – never shows her face. That was a conscious decision, she said, since the focus was on Norman. And, the staffer named Harry added, “It helps with perspective to show how tiny he is.” Most of the photos are just the closely cropped

Howard just might turn out to be the subject of a second book, Martella said. Perhaps the most touching pictures are those of Norman with World War II vet Ralph Morgon, a resident of Sunrise La Costa, an assisted living facility that offers Alzheimer’s care. Today he lives in the room where Martella’s dad, Richard Lawrence Zweig, resided after he and his

continued from page B1 What is your motto or philosophy of life? Since desserts are my life, I preach that dessert is not something you eat every day, so make it worth your while. I would rather eat a small piece of something incredible than a lot of something not so great! Use the best possible ingredients, and the best method in making a dessert. The time it takes cannot be a factor. The final outcome is what counts. I want guests at a wedding to look at the cake as a beautiful piece of art, but also an edible piece of art, and something they can’t wait to eat! What would be your dream vacation? My whole family going anywhere together. What historical figure do you identify with? Alice Waters! (Waters is a U.S. chef, restaurateur, activist and author. She is the owner of Chez Panisse, a Berkeley, Calif. restaurant famous for its organic, locally grown ingredients and for pioneering California cuisine. —Wikipedia)

wife, Patricia Stafford Zweig, moved west to be near their daughter. One photo with the U.S. flag behind Morgon who has Norman in his arms perfectly captures the tribute to her dad and other veterans. Zwieg and his wife had lived for years on St. Simons Island, Ga., until he could no longer care for her. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s when she was 65, Mrs. Zwieg was lovingly cared for by her husband and daughter, who visited as often as she could to pitch in and called daily to check on her parents. “It slowly robs you of everything,” Martella said. “My mother, if ever there was a vivacious woman, lived life to the fullest.” Her husband was 20 years older, and she figured her mom would be caring for him, but instead “he took beautiful care of my mother … It was his spiritual quest.” An only child who often entertained herself by writing, she said, “My parents were sure I would be an author – not just of one liners.” Today those one-liners and the charming Norman are helping to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter, and Martella and Norman are learning what it’s like to be in the spotlight, with recent book signings at Neiman Marcus and the Del Mar Art Center, and 3,000 Facebook friends. Future signings are planned at Sunrise La Costa, Gump’s San Francisco and St. Simons Island, Ga. You can see Norman during the photo shoot at www.gentlemannorman. com.

to narrate Solana Beach’s history to the students of Solana Vista, Skyline, Solana Santa Fe, Solana Highlands and Carmel Creek Elementary Schools. “The teachers love the program,” said Nelson. “We get glowing letters from them.” Nelson has become an unofficial history expert on Solana Beach, although he’s far from a history major. He has a background in economics and engineering, but he was inspired to delve into history when he came to the city in 1995 and decided to attend a talk by the late George Wilkins about early Solana Beach. Wilkins had owned a garden supply and hardware store in the community since 1925 and could recount detailed stories about early life in the beach community. “He had the closest thing to a photo-

graphic memory of anyone I’ve ever met,” said Nelson, who recounted Wilkins’ stories in the two books he authored. “He could describe the stores and families and could tell stories about them. It was fascinating.” The Solana Beach Heritage Museum is not only enjoyed by local kids. It’s open to the public on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. “It’s truly Solana Beach’s best-kept secret,” said Nelson. “We will open the museum by appointment for groups of one or more. Just give us a call and we will meet you there.” To see the museum, contact the Nelsons at (858) 259-7657. For more information, visit www.solanabeachcivicandhistoricalsociety.org.
