Although the Chariot Fire, which had torched 4,700 acres and was 15 percent contained as of Tuesday morning, was in the Mount Laguna area, Ramona was doing its part to aid those battling the blaze and those evacuating. Air tankers and helicopters, including a sky crane, flew in and out of the Air Attack Base at Ramona Airport re-fueling and reloading with retardant. The International Equestrian Center in San Diego Country Estates was allowing evacuees to bring their horses, providing they stayed with them. A spokesperson for the center said on Tuesday no evacuated horse owners had shown up and that it appeared they headed in a different direction. Creek Hollow Ranch in Ramona was designated as

Wildfire Preparedness Community Meeting slated for Tuesday Are you prepared if a major fire sweeps through the area? That’s the question representatives from various organizations will discuss at the Wildfire Preparedness Community Meeting in San Diego Country Estates from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16. School district notices public of intention to destroy some special education records Ramona Unified School District plans to destroy the special education records of all students who were born in 1988. Any student who has reached the age of 18 may review and/or receive these records by contacting the district’s Pupil Services Office at 760-787-2039 and scheduling an appointment by Monday, July 15. If no student, parent or guardian responds to this notice, the district will assume consent to destroy the entire record specific to the student. The district maintains a permanent record in perpetuity of the student’s name,

address, telephone number, grades, attendance record and year completed. The purpose of the destruction is to protect the student from improper and unauthorized disclosure of the confidential information contained in the file, according to the district. “Please note that the student, parent or guardian for Social Security benefits or other purpose may need certain records,” says a district statement. Anyone who does not understand this notice or needs interpretation may contact the Pupil Services Office at the phone number listed.

Trustees tackle realities of changing economy By MAUREEN ROBERTSON College graduates are earning degrees, but not all are finding the jobs they thought they would. That was the message from Pauline Leavitt on her first day as Olive Peirce Middle School principal. Labor Bureau statistics show that 323,000 workers with bachelor’s degrees in California are working as food servers, she told Ramona Unified School District trustees during their discussion of district priorities for the 2013-14 school year. “That tells me that these people went and got a degree, thought they got a career, and then they went out to get a job that didn’t exist,” she said. Leavitt, who’s been with the district nearly seven years — the last two as James Dukes Elementary principal — said that when wildfires hit Ramona, she didn’t think things could get worse. Then the housing market dropped.

“We saw 350 people lose their homes in the Estates and another 150 in the next year, and then I’ve seen in the last two years a lot of homes going into short sale and foreclosure,” she said. “I’m looking at the problems of the economy and I’m thinking, what are we going to do to help our families, and when I’m looking into the faces of our families and our students, I’m thinking, what am I doing to make a difference, so that when you go out in the world, you can do the job.” Her remarks and initial

ideas came after Trustee Rodger Dohm, who teaches engineering courses at Poway High School, explained STEM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, an approach to education that “came as an outcry of the needs in our society,” he said. Dohm defined STEM as “the creative integration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The focus is the engineering design process, where all four disciplines are infused into real-world hands-on projects where engineering is at its core. The engineering design process drives STEM where science, mathematics and technology become part of the creative process, and innovation or invention are the solutions.” It’s more than studying each subject separately. The point of STEM, said Dohm, “is for students to really have an understanding of how to use science, how to use technology

and how to use mathematics as tools like in a toolbox to actually create or invent something following the engineering design process.” National programs have been created since the 1990s, he said, noting that his experience is with Project Lead the Way, a curriculum for middle and high schools. To institute STEM, the district needs a curriculum, the ability to get data, and staff development, he said. Consumers have driven the need for innovation. Because the United States hasn’t had enough mathematicians, scientists and engineers, “we’ve had to look outside our country,” he said, adding, “we really want to look inside the country.” If the district develops a curriculum that integrates the subjects creatively, “where they use all these things as tools...then we would be able to inspire and get kids excited about

going into these fields.” “STEM is taking everything and using them as tools all in one package, and that’s really the idea,” he said. The cost to the district would be the teacher, training for the teacher, technology and curriculum, he said. Grants are available, Leavitt and Dohm agreed, and not everything will cost more. A science teacher recently hired at OPMS already is certified in STEM and was trained at Columbia University and NASA,

said Leavitt. She plans to use Code Academy, a free resource, for all students during homeroom. “I already have students at James Dukes that have finished the Code Academy and are selling their apps online,” she said. “They can help the other kids learn how to do this.” The district “needs to up the ante” in what students are learning, Leavitt said. “I want, when our students of 2018 go out to get jobs, I want them to be qualified,” she said, noting Ramona has a 7.7 percent unemployment rate. “...I think, when we look at our economy, it’s not something we have to think about doing, it’s something we have to do to help our Ramonans... They’re waiting for a solution for their kids.” In a 5-0 vote, trustees approved district priorities for 2013-14. Included was adopting a STEM program. A complete list of the approved priorities are on page 13.

Final adult auditions for Ramona Idol hopefuls Thursday The final Adult Audition for the 2013 Ramona Idol will be Thursday, July 11, at Cheers, 2475 Main St. Sign-ups are at 7:30 p.m. with auditions at 8 p.m. Contestants must audition with music or background music tracks and must be available to sing all three days of the final

Ramona home prices follow countywide trend Housing prices in San Diego County rose last month, according to the San Diego Association of Realtors. Prices in Ramona did the same. The 2,145 single-family homes that changed hands in the county in June had a median price of $481,000, up 3.2 percent compared to May and up 23.3 percent compared to June 2012, according to SDAR. The number of homes sold was 11.4 percent less than the previous month and 1.9 percent fewer than the same period last year, according to SDAR. That wasn’t the case in Ramona, where more

homes sold this June compared to last June. The association reported that 1,003 condominiums and townhouses sold last month. The median price was $301,000, 1.5 percent lower than May. The median price of attached housing was 33.8 percent higher than June 2012. Homes that sold in June were on the market an average of 48 days, down about 38 percent from June 2012. Ramona Realtor Chris Anderson, this year’s SDAR vice president, provided the Sentinel with statistics for Ramona. A total of 58 singlefamily Ramona homes

That compares to 35 single-family detached homes and one condominium sold in June 2012. The average selling price in June for a single-family detached home in Ramona was $390,331, up 5 percent from the average sales price of $369,509 last June. The average condominium price of $188,286 this June was 7 percent higher than last June’s $175,00, Anderson noted. Detached homes that

Ramona 4-H’ers among winners at San Diego County Fair Flinn sisters sweep rabbit meat pen awards By JOE NAIMAN The Flinn sisters once again swept the top two rabbit meat pen awards at the San Diego County Fair. This year, 13-year-old Katie Flinn won supreme grand champion with her pen and 15-year-old Carney Flinn was the supreme reserve champion. Last year, Carney was the supreme grand champion and Katie was the supreme reserve champion. “We both shared the projects,” Katie said. “They’re both our rabbits,” added Carney. “It’s a family rabbit project.” Each pen had three rabbits. The litters were born April 17, which made them 69 days old on the judging day. The rabbits must be no older than 69 days as of the judging date. Although they may be younger, older rabbits have more meat and weight. Katie’s rabbits ranged from 4.72 to 4.82 pounds while Carney’s rabbits were 4.54, 4.55 and 4.56 pounds. The rabbits must weigh between 3 and 5 pounds, and similar size is one of the judging criteria. The 4-H grand and reserve champions for each animal and the Future Farmers of America grand and reserve champions compete for supreme grand champion and supreme reserve champion. The Flinn sisters, who are members of Ramona Wranglers 4-H, also won the 4-H grand champion and reserve champion awards. As was the case last year when Katie’s meat pen brought more than Carney’s at auction, this year’s supreme reserve champion rabbits sold for more than the supreme grand champions. The fair’s livestock office paid $950 for Katie’s rabbits and has plans to breed and show the animals. Mitchell Livestock paid $1,200 for Carney’s three 2013 rabbits. This is the sisters’ fifth year in 4-H. They have had rabbits at the San Diego County Fair all five years. Carney had the re-

Because the Flinn sisters were in different age classes, they each took first place in the showmanship category for rabbits. Katie won the intermediate division and Carney had the best senior division score. Katie placed second in the master showmanship for all small animals at the intermediate level while Carney placed third

in small animal showmanship among senior entrants. This year the Knowledge Bowl utilized a team format. Ramona Wranglers 4-H, which included the Flinn sisters, took second place for large animals and small animals. Animals bred in San Diego County are eligible for Bred and Fed awards. Although there is no separate Bred and Fed recognition for rabbits, Katie placed fifth in Bred and Fed for sheep with a lamb she purchased from Zeigler Suffolks.

Wier breeds, raises and shows county fair’s supreme reserve champion market swine, Angel By JOE NAIMAN For the second time in three years, Ramona’s Christopher Wier won supreme reserve champion for market swine at the San Diego County Fair. Wier won his supreme reserve champion award with Angel, a hampshire cross who was born Christmas Day and tipped the fair scales at 284 pounds. “It was really hard. Takes a lot of time,” Wier

said. This year the fair replaced breed divisions with weight classes. Angel first won the heavyweight swine class. There is a grand and reserve champion for each animal for 4-H and Grange members, while Future Farmers of America division champions compete for the FFA grand and reserve champions. Van Tol wins reserve grand champion for market calf By JOE NAIMAN Kaylin Van Tol's veal calf earned supreme reserve champion for market calves at the 2013 San Diego County Fair. Last year Kaylin captured supreme reserve champion veal calf for her animal, finishing behind a calf her older sister RaeAnne raised. The county fair combined veal calves with market calves this year, making competition stiffer. Kaylin brought two

calves to the fair: Pascal, who weighed 421 pounds, and Maximus, who weighed 423 pounds. They earned champion and reserve champion, respectively, in their Holstein weight class before winning breed honors and advancing to the 4-H grand champion round. “Being in the grand champion round as a dairy species was a big accomplishment,” Van Tol said. Letters Bubbles benefit Soap Project “Bubbles..Bubbles!” Toddlers, beauty queens, retired teachers, and others came to play and dance in streams of bubbles from our bubble machine. Many came to look at one of the hundred Vandalproof soap dispensers to be installed in student bathrooms throughout Ramon Unified School District. About 100 people donated $2 for a bottle of soap bubbles at our FORUS (Friends of Ramona Unified Schools) booth at the Fourth of July event at Olive Peirce Middle School prior to the fireworks. A couple of hundred dollars raised at the event and another $300 in pledges generated from online pleas will be added to the $1,500 donated by members of FORUS for the “Soap Project.” Damaged beyond repair by vandals, who repeatedly break plastic soap dispensers, many bathrooms at Ramona Elementary, Barnett Elementary, OPMS and Ramona High School do not have soap or soap dispensers. According to the Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization, consistent evidence shows that hand washing with soap at critical times — before eating or preparing food and after using the toilet — can reduce diarrheal risk by 45 percent and acute respiratory infections such as pneumonia by 23 percent. Studies also reveal that primary school absenteeism due to diarrhoea and respiratory infections dropped between 20 percent and 50 percent as a result of better hand washing practices . RUSD averages a 5 percent student absentee rate. In 2011-12 at Ramona Unified, 473 chronically absent students cost the district $355,566.77, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. If the majority of absences are due to infectious disease, then $20,000 in soap dispensers/soap in our schools could save RUSD up to $180,000 in a year. Is Keystone Pipeline worth the risk? Why is the disputed Keystone Pipeline needed in the first place? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to build a new processing plant up at the Canadian border? Perhaps this wouldn’t work because they will need the proximity of our Gulf of Mexico to dispose of the tons of toxic waste produced in the process. Is that such a good idea? Many years ago Russian-born American biochemist Eugene Rabinowich estimated that 10 percent of the earth’s oxygen is produced by the trees and plants of the forest and fields. The other 90 percent comes from one-celled plants and seaweed in the oceans. Polluting oceans is therefore bad enough, but if oil spills continue to pollute our land (because nobody knows how to clean them up), we will be in real trouble. They will then be endangering the sources of our water supply. According to a recent article in National Geographic, by 2025 48 percent of the world will be living in areas of water stress, not enough water. That could include us, because the world’s population has grown more since 1950 than in the previous 4 million years. Who actually benefits from the Keystone Pipeline anyway? Just fix the pool By DAVE PATTERSON It’s pretty hard for me to be sympathetic for the guy down the street. He had a big debt load, new house and car, plus a huge balloon payment looming. His swimming pool had some cracks, broken ladders and failing pumps. Because he thinks big, not prudently, he decided rather than fix the pool he would bulldoze the thing and build a huge aquatic center. In his mind there would always be plenty of money, so he was bewildered when he went bankrupt and lost everything. More importantly, he couldn’t understand when

Guest Commentary his neighbors refused to help him out financially, and why none of them felt empathy for his situation. The poor decision maker in this story is how I see the Ramona Unified School District, where the decision makers always think big. As an example, the swimming pool at the high school needs repairs. The repair ideas have recently ballooned into what might end up a large community aquatic center, paid for with grants, and potentially through the school bond that will be floated in the

future. So, rather than just fix the pool, we are looking at more debt and potentially more maintenance cost into the future. Somehow bigger and better has trumped fiscal prudence regarding the high school swimming pool. The fact that the district does not have the money to fix the pool, or the roofs, or the carpets, or to install good soap dispensers in the bathrooms, is compounded by looming COP payments that will cripple the operating budgets, unless a bond is passed, or as the bond can be characterized, a sympathetic neighbor donating $30M. We don’t really need an aquatic center for the community, and having one built as part of the school bond would be a liability toward passing a school bond in my view, rather than a way to garner support for it.

I base my viewpoint in the people I talk to, people who want to see fiscal constraints in place before they will consider voting for a school bond. Regarding the community aquatic center, the people in the Estates already have pools to use. The people in town and across the valley that have the means already have pools, and these two groups of voters aren’t likely to see the benefit in paying more taxes to build a community aquatic center. The people left are those living within their means who don’t like our taxes being used on unnecessary projects, and those without means who aren’t likely to vote anyway. I see the community aquatic center as having the real potential to be a school bond killer. How can we show some fiscal prudence to potential school bond voters? Just fix the pool. Ham radio buffs have a Field Day By REGINA ELLING It’s a hobby that often becomes a lifestyle. Many amateur radio enthusiasts spend much of their free time perfecting their craft. By learning the limits of their personal equipment, clear and effective communication over the airwaves and preparation for emergencies, “ham” radio fans take pride in their skills and abilities. Many Ramona hams shared their knowledge with local residents recently as part of the yearly Field Day, when they took over a section of Fire Station 82 on Dye Road. “Ham radio is a good backcountry source of communicating. Many times it’s the only source,” said Don Scott, a ham and longtime member of ROARS, the Ramona Outback Amateur Radio Society. “The idea behind Field Day is to reach as many countries around the world by radio as possible in 24 hours.” Amid the squelch and monotones of members making contacts over the radio, visitors saw moun-

tains of antennas, radio gear, laptops and food in abundance. More than 50 people attended the event, including three fire captains. Participants included men and woman of all ages with varying degrees of technical knowledge, and many youngsters, some new and others familiar with the hobby. “We hope to get a few new radio operators on the air and maybe even get them to join our club,” said Scott. Many members of Boy Scout Troop 768 in Ramona may well become future hams, as they not only provided lighting for the event, but they were thrilled to make radio contacts across the country. According to Ken Donham, also a longtime ham and club member, watching one youngster make his first radio contact was the highlight of the weekend. “A mom and her little boy, he was maybe 7 or 8 years old, were working with Don on learning to use the radio equipment,” said Donham. “The mother, already a ham,

and FFA grand and reserve champions then compete for supreme grand champion and supreme reserve champion. Angel was also the 4-H reserve champion. Angel was one of 13 piglets in the litter. Another member of that litter, Big O, weighed 261 pounds and won the middleweight class. Angel and Big O were the only swine Wier entered in the 2013 fair. Wier has been in Ramona Paisanos 4-H for five years. This is his fourth year raising a pig and his fourth year with an entry at the county fair. In 2011 he won supreme reserve champion with 286-pound Sassy Gold. Wier purchased Sassy Gold from Awesome Genetics, and they won the 2011 Bred and Fed award

And then, quite by coincidence, the child made contact with his own father, also a ham, who was elsewhere in the county.” Several listeners beamed as he recounted the pair’s reaction. “She jumped with joy and he was tickled to death,” said Donham. Of course, growing up with two hams, he’s gonna remember that contact the rest of his life.”

Ham radio is an effective method of communication during natural disasters and emergencies, and was one of the only means available during the recent wildfires. breed and the Future Farmers of America grand and reserve champions then competed for supreme grand champion and supreme reserve champion. Pascal was the 4-H reserve grand champion. The merger of the veal calf and market calf classes this year placed Pascal in the same grand champion and supreme grand champion round with a calf raised by 56 Ranchers 4-H’er Scott Johnson, who won 4-H grand champion and supreme grand champion. “That was one of the biggest obstacles I had to overcome this year,” Kaylin said. “Holsteins are a dairy species.” The Van Tol family owns TD Dairy in Ramona. Kaylin obtained both her calves and the milk to feed them from the dairy. The youngest of the four Van Tol sisters, she has been in Ramona Paisanos 4-H for six years and made her county fair debut in 2011. RaeAnne, who majors in animal science at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, won either supreme grand champion or supreme reserve champion for veal calves each year between 2009 and 2012. In 2011, she helped raise Kaylin’s calf. “We always help each other out,” Kaylin said, adding, “It was a lot harder for me (this year) because my sister was gone.

I had to do everything this time.” Another obstacle for Van Tol, 16, is that she was a sophomore at Mountain Valley Academy during the school year, taking advanced placement courses and playing on Ramona High School’s varsity water polo and swim teams while raising her two calves, both born in early March. “It definitely taught me a lot of time management,” she said. Because both of Kaylin’s calves were in the same weight class, Ramona 4-H’er Megan Storton showed Maximus while she showed Pascal. Pascal finished second in showmanship to Johnson’s calf. She also finished second to Johnson in the Bred and Fed competition for animals bred in San Diego County and nourished from feed stores or other sources within the county. Tip Top Meats purchased Pascal for $7 per pound. That’s more than last year, when her calf Moofie sold for $4 per pound Kaylin, who also raises pigs, focused on calves for the county fair. “I was debating whether or not to do it,” she said of entering veal calves in the combined competition. “I just stuck with it. It turned out very well. Considering the circumstances, I am extremely proud of what I accomplished this year.”

for the best pig bred and fed in San Diego County. Wier bred the litter that included Angel and Big O. In addition to winning this year’s Bred and Fed for swine, he had the highest Bred and Fed score for any species. “It puts my name out there,” said Wier, who calls his breeding operation CW Livestock. Wier started CW Livestock in 2012, and the Dec. 25 litter was his first. The gestation for a pig is three months, three weeks, and three days. The litter’s sow, Baby Face, and the dam, Power 2 Change, are hampshire crosses. The hampshire Wier entered in the 2012 county fair won its class only. Wier also entered the market

beef class for the first time in 2012, winning the non-black charolais division. His 2013 steer did not win its class. Juicy’s River Cafe, which is in Needles, purchased Angel for $12 per pound and returned Angel to Wier as a gift to continue in his breeding program. Wier, a lifelong Ramona resident and a 2013 Ramona High School graduate, will start his college studies at Modesto Community College. He plans to transfer to California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo for an agricultural business degree. He will show Big O at the Ramona Junior Fair and Livestock Auction at the end of the month.

Electrical engineering suits Sandra Kjono Editor’s Note: This is one in the Sentinel’s “Where Are They Now?” series about Ramona graduates—where they are and what they are doing. By KAREN BRAINARD Since graduating from Ramona High School 13 years ago, Sandra Kjono has earned two academic degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, served in the military and attained the rank of lieutenant, been involved with military research projects, and will soon be working on her doctorate. The Class of 2000 grad chose her path partly due to the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship she received at Ramona High, where she served as commanding officer her senior year. That scholarship facilitated her attendance at Stanford University, a place where she felt she belonged. While visiting Stanford, Kjono sat in on a small discussion group. Although she usually stayed quiet in such groups, she found herself adding to the discussion and, to her surprise, other students built on her comments. “Something I had been looking for all my life and

a good fit for me,” she said. “The personalities of the people I worked with fit well with my personality, too.” Her training included anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, combat search and rescue, and vertical replenishment — dropping supplies from a helicopter. Stationed in Florida and Oklahoma, she also traveled to Korea and Japan for military exercises. While in Japan, she hiked to the top of Mount Fuji.

Kjono served in the military for five years and then went to work as a civilian electrical engineer at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific, a Department of Navy research lab in Point Loma. For one of Kjono’s classified projects, she submitted a patent that was endorsed by Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) and could be approved soon. “Doing research and development at SPAWAR was a pretty fulfilling experience, but I knew I want-

After two years, Kjono took a leave of absence from SSC Pacific and returned to Stanford where she graduated in June with a master’s degree in electrical engineering. Next will be her doctorate for which she plans to focus on optics. Kjono said she wants to create a diagnostic tool for optical biopsies that would allow a doctor to look into delicate tissues without cutting. “I feel electrical engineering can do a lot to help the medical field and evolve it,” said Kjono. The advanced degree could open other new doors, such as becoming a research professor. Throughout her schooling and work, Kjono has found time to volunteer. While in high school she taught English as a second language at the pregnancy clinic. She also tutored people with dyslexia. “They helped me to see that maybe teaching could be a future possibility. It’s one of the reasons I applied to get a Ph.D.,” she said. Kjono’s father, Olav, a retired Navy lieutenant commander, grew up on a Mohawk reservation in Quebec, a place she enjoyed spending summers and hanging out with her cousins. One-man play depicts life of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;doctor of soulsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; A professional actor, Casey Groves, will re-enact the life of Father Francis Seelos in a one-man play in which he portrays over 20 roles. Father Seelos, a priest in the 1800s, had an amazing life and was known for his sense of humor and gentle nature and is said to have healed countless people. He died in New Orleans ministering to his parishioners who had contracted yellow fever. The play, titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seelos: Doctor of Souls,â&#x20AC;? will be

held on Tuesday, July 23, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 537 E St. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and food will be available for purchase on the church patio. The play will start at 6:30 p.m. and will last for about 90 minutes. Admission is free, and the public is welcome. Donations will be accepted to help Groves with his costs of the tour. Written and performed by Groves, the play is directed by George Drance.

Ramona VFW assists many, quartermaster reports In the past year, Ramona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783 has provided approximately $12,000 to assist a variety of individuals and families in a variety of ways, Quartermaster Frank Uram reports. Donations have gone to families in financial distress, to provide baby supplies to families of deployed military, to provide shelter during cold winter nights to local veterans, and to provide food, gas or transportation fare to homeless veterans who stopped at the post.

Registration for Temple Adat Shalom’s award-winning Hebrew for Credit courses is open to students who will be in eighth through 12th grades for the 2013-14 school year. Six Elements of Worthwhile Wellness It’s not optional, it’s crucial for life! Fitness and wellness are not a luxury, a pastime, a hobby or a good idea. It’s mandatory, whether you like it or not. You MUST make time, make the investment and make the room in your life for taking care of your “house.” You are probably not going to enjoy every workout, every healthy meal or the muscle soreness that may result from an intense session, but the dividends you will earn will be well worth the sweat and effort! Now that I got my preaching out of the way, let’s get down to this week topic:

Six Elements of Worthwhile Wellness Element 1 — Food Nutrition and proper food intake is 80 percent of the battle. Eating a diet rich in fresh vegetables, clean meat sources and some nuts, seeds and fruit is critical to worthwhile wellness. If weight loss is your goal, calories will play an important role in your success. Those that tell you otherwise are deceiving you and themselves. Keep a food log and see where your calories are for a couple weeks. Calorie needs vary individual to individual. Lean body mass and activity levels place different demands on calorie needs. Two individuals at the same weight can have vastly different calorie needs, even if they have the same jobs and similar exercise routines, so one size doesn’t fit all. Element 2 — Resistance Training Good old-fashioned weight lifting will fire your metabolism up and blast you through plateaus in weight loss. So often I hear members at the gym say they need to do more cardio because they need to lose that last 10 pounds. Yes, this can help, but over time the same cardio session at the same level and the same amount of time will create less results and slower weight loss. Progressive and intense resistance training will keep the results and weight loss mov-

ing ahead. Don’t worry, you’re NOT going to BULK UP! Element 3 — Dietary Support Support tools such as vitamins, omega fatty acids and joint support supplements can benefit your wellness greatly. Natural herbs and roots can aide you in reducing pain and inflammation and increase energy levels without the need for prescription drugs. Element 4 — Cardio Respiratory Exercise There is an important place for cardio and getting that heart and those lungs going. HIIT has become a popular method of cardio. What is H-I-I-T? High intensity interval training. Rather than just getting on a treadmill and cruising at 3 mph for an hour, why not walk on a 30 percent incline for 2 minutes followed by hitting the heavy bag for a hard 30 seconds, followed by 2 flights of stairs? HUGE calorie burn, increased heart and lung capacity, a monster release of endorphins and an exit of cortisol out of the body will leave you feeling euphoric. Build up on the intensity level on this, but work hard at your level. Element 5 — Recovery With all this hard work, you have to take this element seriously. Proper sleep is not four hours! Get a solid seven to nine hours of sleep. This is your time to heal, rebuild and refocus your body for the next day. Foam rolling, massage, stretching, and prayer and meditation time are all crucial to healing. Element 6 — Education and Personal Assistance Get better through self-education and seeking the assistance of professionals in the fields of exercise, nutrition and wellness. You can always learn more and strengthen your knowledge base. “The fire is now well established on the west side of Sunrise Highway. There has been a significant increase in acreage on the Cleveland National Forest,” Cal Fire Capt. Mike Mohler stated in a release. The fire continued to be a potential threat to Foster Lodge, Mt. Laguna residences and campgrounds, including El Prado, Horse Heaven and Laguna, Mohler said Tuesday, adding that eight structures were destroyed, 120 structures threatened and five injuries reported. Personnel fighting the

flames from the air and ground totaled nearly 1,400. Of the injuries, three were heat-related and one was a facial cut, said Mohler. The Chariot Fire broke out just before 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, east of Sunrise Highway and about nine miles southeast of Julian, according to Cal Fire. Authorities cleared everyone out of 20 residences potentially in the path of the flames Sunday night, and from 100 others Monday morning when the evacuation zone was widened to cover about three miles

Leadership camps test cadets’ physical fitness By BILL TAMBURRINO This summer cadets from the Ramona High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) attended leadership academies that tested their physical fitness and they came out strong. Ramona’s NJROTC is an Area 11 Distinguished Unit and has been for three years. The unit’s commander, Lieutenant Commander Mike Ernst, and Chief Petty Officer

Kevin Carmona, Jessica Buzzell and Randy Basel attended the week-long Area 11 Leadership Academy in Flagstaff, Ariz. Eric Szymanski, Joey Balderson, Lauren Masters, Cheyenne Brugh and Carlo Silva attended the Area 11 Leadership Academy in Irvine, where Ernst was an instructor. silver aiguillette worn on the shoulder of their uniforms. Less than 1 percent of the nation’s NJROTC cadets earn the right to wear the Silver Cord. To achieve the Silver Cord, each cadet had to pass a rigorous physical Cadet Challenge Test and earn the Navy Physical Fitness Ribbon, pass a personnel inspection with a 90 percent score, pass a platoon drill evaluation, pass a final written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher, and receive a recommendation by their platoon leader. Besides the silver aiguillette, the cadets brought home skills and knowledge that will help them be leaders in the NJROTC unit and in life. “Every individual has strengths and weaknesses. You have to work as a team to strengthen the weakness and finish strong,” said Brugh. “Work together as a team. Even if the immediate goal is not reached, doing your best as a team will pay off in the long run,” is what Masters said she learned.

British soccer instructor to coach at RSL summer camp By JOE NAIMAN British soccer instructor Tyrone White will return to Ramona for the first time in several years and will be featured at coach Michael Jordan’s Ramona Soccer League (RSL) Summer Soccer Camp, to be held July 22-26. “It just all kind of came together,” said Jordan, who is also Ramona High School’s varsity boys soccer coach. White is with UK International. He instructed at previous Ramona Soccer League camps. In 2000, Jordan was White’s roommate in Ramona. “That was before I was

married or had kids,” Jordan said. “Soccer just was our life back then.” Michael and Sarah Jordan married in 2002, and White sang their wedding song. Ramona Soccer League began working with UK International in the late 1990s. Jordan was Ramona Soccer League’s director of coaching for eight years. He coached club soccer teams for six years and also coached his sons’ recreational teams. Jordan, a 1989 Ramona High School graduate, was also a player on Ramona Soccer League’s first travel team.

Jordan organized a soccer camp during winter break, which led to his decision to have a summer camp. “There’s really nothing for the kids in the summertime,” he said. That led to the invitation to White to return to Ramona. “I’m really excited to see him again,” Jordan said. The five-day soccer camp, for ages 6 to 16, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon each day at the Ramona Soccer League fields. The cost is $115 for the week or $30 per day. “I learned that when you make a mistake you have to admit it and correct it and continue on toward your goal,” said Szymanski. “The academy taught me that there are always new ways to improve yourself and others. Work as a team to find those ways,” said Balderson. “You are never done learning,” said Basel. Carmona was the top physical fitness cadet at the Arizona academy. Sean Dennis, Kiana Carlstrom, Jacob Underwood, Wesley Richardson and Shannon Singleton attended the Area 11 Sailing Academy in Coronado. The three-day academy taught the basics of sailing, the importance of physical fitness, the importance of academics and featured several competitions. Ramona did well in those competitions. Richardson earned an Aptitude Ribbon for his team’s first place finish in the Battalion Field Meet that had competitions in push-ups, curl-ups, a 220yard relay, Dizzy Izzy Oar contest and a tug-of-war. Carlstrom’s team took second place in the meet. Richardson’s Battalion Brain Brawl team took the gold and earned another ribbon for his salad bar.

Dennis’ team took second place in the “Family Feud”-style contest based on questions from the Sail Academy study guide. Richardson, Singleton and Dennis received ribbons for Academic Competition. Underwood’s crew won the most important event at the academy. Underwood earned a ribbon for being a member of the first place team in the 250 Class Sailing Competition race. “Besides learning to sail, I learned that you can and have to be able to learn to work with everyone. To be successful in a race you have to be motivated

and have heart. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun,” said Carlstrom. As commander of an Area 11 Distinguished NJROTC unit, Ernst, gets to provide up to three nominations a year to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy (Army) and the U.S. Naval Academy. To date, two Ramona High School cadets have been accepted to military academies. This year Tyler Sherman is at West Point, and Alec Richardson is a plebe at Annapolis. The RHS unit also has former cadets on ROTC scholarships at the University of New Mexico, Tulane and Norwich.

Ramona Wrestling Club takes 3rd at championships Ramona Youth Wrestling Club’s team placed third at the Fourth Annual Western States Championships at San Clemente High School. The club, known as “The Pound,” took five wrestlers, including two who are new to the club, to the tournament. “Each year ‘The Pound’ and Olive Peirce Middle School join together as a team to participate in this tournament and we are proud to be bringing home the third place trophy,” said head coach Eddie Badgett. The Vail family, which includes children ages 8,10 and 13, will be competing in a triathlon July 13 in June Lake. “We’re all doing it,” said mom Christine Vail, who will be competing in the event for the fourth time, while it will be the second stint for her husband, Tark. The race will be a first for their son, 8-year-old Tommy, who has been taking swim lessons in preparation, and their daughter, 10-year-old Jocelyn. Tim, 13, already has experience under his belt. Joining the Vail family in the competition will be Christine’s father, Steve Canfield of Pine Valley. The June Lake triathlon, billed as “Toughest Race in the Most Beautiful Place!” consists of a 100-meter swim, two miles of bike

riding and a one-mile run. Christine said she thought it would be fun for the whole family. “I looked at it as a challenge,” Tark said about competing. “I just thought it was the greatest full body workout.”

Charity golf tournament to raise funds for veteran The Jim Rhodehamel Charity Golf Tournament, scheduled for noon July 26 at Mt. Woodson Golf Club, has been organized to raise both healthy heart awareness and funds to assist the tournament’s namesake who is a decorated Vietnam veteran. Rhodehamel, who

served 12 years in the Navy and is a fourth-generation San Diegan, underwent open heart surgery just over six months ago. He is currently in the second phase of rehabilitation. In addition to serving the U.S., Rhodehamel, raised two children, Angela and Jason.

“My dad owned his own business and was an entrepreneur, but he was a dad first. He always had time to play catch, take us to the park and be a great dad,” said Jason Rhodehamel. The tournament format is a four-person scramble. The $75 per golfer fee includes golf, food, a post-
