Milagro Farm Vineyards & Winery wins Best of San Diego County By JOE NAIMAN A bottle of estate-grown 2012 Sauvignon Blanc from Milagro Farm Vineyards and Winery won Best of San Diego County in the 2013 San Diego County Fair wine competition. “It’s just an incredible honor,”

said Milagro Farm Vineyards marketing manager Audrey Koniges. “To be recognized as the best is a true honor.” Koniges notes that the Sauvignon Blanc is her personal favorite. “That was an added bonus,” she said.

The bottle was from the Ramona winery’s third release of Sauvignon Blanc. The winery planted 1,000 vines producing musque and California clone grapes in 2006. The fair also awarded double gold, gold, silver and bronze medals based on the Davis 20-point

Group tackles soap dispensers as first project Greg Chick, one of the founding members of Friends of Ramona Unified Schools (FORUS) and owner of Ramona’s Plumber, was in the boys locker room at Ramona High School recently installing Vandalproof soap dispensers — at no cost to the school district.

A plastic soap dispenser knocked off the wall sits on the floor of the Ramona High School boys locker room bathroom.

The need for soap dispensers and soap in some student bathrooms in the Ramona Unified School District came to the attention of FORUS when teachers said they keep hand sanitizer in their classrooms because there sometimes is no soap in the student bathrooms. Reasons vary from students knocking soap dispensers off the wall or wasting all the soap in one use to a school just not having soap in a student restroom. FORUS, a California public benefit corporation applying for nonprofit status, consists of a group of Ramonans who have been meeting almost weekly in

in November, the group’s goal is to fill gaps in student needs at Ramona Unified. They’ve discussed everything from reroofing schools and replacing heating and air conditioning units to energy conservation projects and defibrillators at each school. But until FORUS achieves 501(c)(3) status, it’s starting with what Fundraising Chair Dr. Jane Tanaka calls the Soap Project.

As a doctor, Tanaka understands the connection between soapless student bathrooms and school attendance, a factor that contributes to school funding. Members of FORUS’ steering committee donated money for eight Vandalproof soap dispensers and two cases of soap for each. Chick used six steel toggle bolts to mount each “kid-proof” dispenser. “I think it’s a good way to prevent the kids from trying to damage them, because the plastic (dispensers now at the school) don’t work at all,” Tom Fitzpatrick, lead custodian at Ramona High said as Chick finished installing one Vandalproof dispenser. Before he left the boys locker room, he demonstrated how the “timedout” dispenser works — one push, one squirt of soap, just enough to wash your hands. FORUS introduced itself to the public at the Rotary July 4 Family Picnic and Fireworks, where members sold bottles of soap

Archer’s back home in Country Estates Minus some feathers, Archer, the wild turkey shot through the chest with a target arrow by an unknown assailant in April, returned home to Ramona’s San Diego Country Estates on July 11. Archer, captured by two California Fish and Wildlife biologists in late June, was cared for at Acacia Animal Health Center in Escondido, where Dr. Carrie Bone, D.M.V., removed the arrow. After recuperating in a foster home in Ramona for a week and a half, Archer was strong

enough to go home, said his foster parent, Emergency Animal Rescue Executive Director Doug Lake. “He’s lost quite a bit of feathers,” Lake said, explaining that the bird instinctively plucked his back feathers due to the stress of living in different environments, including a chain-link enclosure measuring 16 feet by 16 feet at his home. Among the food items Lake fed Archer were watermelon, broccoli, corn,

and blueberries to build up his stamina and “get a little muscle back on him,” he said. About a dozen people, including several neighbors, children and Emergency Animal Rescue volunteers, served as a welcoming committee to witness the bird they affectionately call Archer return home off Pappas Road and Davis Cup Lane. “What a nice ending to this story,” said Michelle Ceroli, one of the neighbors who brought the community’s attention to Archer’s plight, detailing what the Emergency Animal Rescue volunteers, neighbors and a man from Fish and Wildlife, who “sat on a porch for four hours” one evening, did in an effort to rescue the wounded bird. “Jan (Pickton) and Doug (Lake), I’ve never seen more dedicated people in rescuing animals,” said Ceroli, also crediting one of her neighbors for convincing the state agency to rescue rather than shoot Archer.

Sentinel photos/Maureen Robertson

Archer, right, stands for a moment, seeming to set his sights on a direction. Above, off he goes — back to his flock.

Ceroli, who once fed the wild turkeys that seem to favor the area in the vicinity of Pappas Road, Davis Cup Lane and Rainbird Road, stopped after Fish and Wildlife “said we shouldn’t feed them.” Others are feeding them, she noted, adding “I don’t want them to get fat and lazy.” “Everybody’s embracing the birds,” she said. “... They may be a little messy, but they do eat the bugs.”

She and her neighbors are keeping watchful eyes on a group of young turkeys whose mother is missing. They don’t know what happened to the mother. Ramona used to be the turkey capital of the world, Ceroli said, commenting, “I’ve been here 15 years and I’ve never seen so many turkeys.” Regarding Archer’s return, she said, “It’s a happy ending to the power of the people — love.”

Unicorn introduces author M.P. Zarrella at book signing Unicorn Books and Gifts will host a book signing to introduce a new Ramona author, M.P. Zarrella, and her book “A Tangeled Web” from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. In “A Tangeled Web,” the main character, Annelise, loved the outdoors, animals and art and spent her life dedicated to all three. But the world around her was changing. First came laws that restricted pet ownership. Then, as technology accelerated, gardens and animals were outlawed. Horses were no longer the Sport of Kings but viewed as taking up valuable resources. These laws were being enacted too quickly. Annelise and her friends knew there was something very wrong and were secretly planning something big — very big. “A Tangeled Web” has been listed as the number one selling book on Abbott Press and continues to sell quickly.

Photo/Becky Cullen

Marta Zarrella and Autumn are pictured during a camping trip.

“It is a gripping book. I read it in two days. The wonderful descriptive narrative and engaging story seems all too possible in our crazy political times,” said one reviewer. The book signing will be an opportunity to meet and talk with the author, a Ramona resident. Unicorn Books and Gifts, Ramona’s only bookstore, is at 738 Main St.

Zarrella has been writing about people, places and things in Southern California since 2007. Her first published work, a poem titled “Meant To Be,” was submitted to a poetry competition and published in 2005 as an honorable mention finalist. In 2012, Zarrella earned a first place in Medical Writing and a second in Magazine Series from the

San Diego Press Club’s Annual Excellence Awards competition as a freelance writer. Writing is a second career for Zarrella. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1979 and worked for 12 years in Accounting and Information Systems for GTE Corporation, which today is Verizon. She served clients on a part-time basis offering bookkeeping and desktop publishing services after leaving her job as strategic planning director for GTE Data Services in Tampa, Fla., choosing to dedicate her time to home and family while her children were young. During elementary school years reading and storytelling were always important family-time events. After moving to California in December of 1999, Zarrella made a new start and began taking creative writing courses while her children, now in their 20s, were in middle and high

school. Commitment to the community and giving back has been important to her since high school. In Florida and California she used her business and writing skills to support nonprofit organizations and community groups she became involved with as a volunteer. The family’s home was destroyed in the Witch firestorm in 2007. The family of five, one cat, two dogs and three horses evacuated safely, though a pet snake did not make it. After that, Zarrella took time off from freelance work to focus on helping her family deal with the aftermath of such a life changing event. One outcome was an amicable divorce after a 29-year marriage. Starting over in midlife seemed a daunting task at the time, but like the hillside blooms after California wildfires, beauty is found in the ashes, she said.

Novel writing became a soul searching and healing part of Zarrella’s daily activities along with a steady stream of freelance work. Zarrella continues to be

active in the community and enjoys her hillside three-acre ranch in Ramona which she shares with two dogs, two cats, two horses and her children, now and then. She continues working part time as a freelance writer and is working on her second novel. NMLS# 260434 • DRE# 01101300

Guest Commentary read the report and chose to make some comments on it. Included in the LAFCO report was a “cost comparison of recycled water with potable water” for both the San Vicente WPF Plant and the Santa Maria

WPF Plant in the Ramona area. Being a ratepayer in the San Vicente Sewer District, I was particularly interested in numbers quoted for San Diego Country Estates Association (and Rancho San Vicente) ratepayers.

A summary of cost comparison of recycled with potable water shows the following: Identification of product SDCEA ratepayer Spangler Ranch Purchase of potable water ($4.58 HCF) $1,995 acre ft does not use potable Cost to produce recycled water $ 3,639 acre ft none-(not in SVSD) Cost to buy recycled water from RMWD $35 acre ft $35 acre ft Total cost for irrigation water $5,665 acre ft $35 acre ft

In addition, a recent suggestion by an RMWD director was to raise the $35 rate for recycled water to $1,250 an acre foot! Our community had essentially reached buildout phase by 2003 and our Board of Directors had opted to develop a longrange plan for our community and asked me to form an ad hoc committee to determine where we would get irrigation water for the golf course. Our ad hoc committee, a pro bono group of citizens, launched an extensive study which included a review of hundreds of documents, reports, and interviews. As Supervisor Jacob revealed earlier, among informa-

tion we discovered was a copy of the PDP 70-5 document, the original request and approval circa 1972 by the County for development of the San Diego Country Estates. Among requirements was construction of a wastewater treatment plant and return of the recycled water for irrigation of the golf course. That plant was built, produced recycled water, but we found the recycled water was not being returned for irrigation of the SDCEA golf course. When RMWD was asked why the San Vicente communities were not receiving recycled water, we were See COMMENTARY, page 7

Arizona Hotshots' memorial features prayer penned by Ramonan By KAREN BRAINARD When Patricia “Trish” Huston of Ramona wrote “The Hotshot’s Prayer” 11 years ago, she had no idea that it would one day serve a need for those grieving the loss of 19 Hotshot crew members in Arizona. “I’m so honored to know that my little prayer I wrote 11 years ago was so important,” said Huston, the wife of a Hotshots firefighter. The prayer was read by the lone survivor of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, Brendan McDonough, at the memorial service last Tuesday in

lent. “It really hit home for us Hotshots while we were sitting at the memorial,” he said. Trish watched the memorial service on TV and both were emotionally moved by seeing McDonough read the prayer. “When I saw him reading it...to me, I’m just the little old country girl from Ramona...I could not stop crying,” she said. The memorial service was not the first time they heard the prayer recited in recent days. The mayor of Prescott read the poem on the news after the crew members’ death, Jim said.

Trish cannot remember, she posted “The Hotshot’s Prayer” on it in 2007. Trish wrote the prayer in 2002 out of frustration because she could find prayers for emergency responders and structure firefighters but not wildland firefighters. told — we “could not handle it.” We then put together a plan to upgrade our distribution and storage capabilities. SDCEA has spent $500,000 of homeowner funds on these initial improvements and negotiated a 10-year agreement in 2008 to share the recycled water between SDCEA and Spangler Ranch. In February 2013, the final upgrading phase was approved and budgeted by the SDCEA Board but has been put on hold — re-

that line because he enjoyed being outdoors, said Trish, adding that it is a physically demanding job. “This is a very dangerous job,” she said. Jim’s rank as superintendent would be the same as a battalion chief for the U.S. Forest Service, she noted. When she heard about the Hotshots who died in Arizona, Trish said, “I thank God that Jim was home that night.” His job takes him to fight wildland fires out of state often, she said. The U.S. Forest Service Hotshots are considered a national resource, Trish explained, so not only do they fight fires, but they travel all over for other emergencies. Trish said Jim is typically gone 4-1/2 months out of a six-month period. Hotshots are a tight family, she noted. Although the Granite Mountain Hotshots were not under the U.S. Forest Service, Jim said he had worked with

the group before and noted that of the 108 Hotshot crews across the country, most cross paths at some time. Trish said her husband loves his job and she supports it, but it is hard when he leaves. “It’s all in God’s hands,” she said. “God is a big part of our family.” As for her prayer receiving national attention, Trish said, “I just feel so humble. It was very moving. I’ve cried a lot these past few days.” Following is “The Hotshot’s Prayer,” for which Jim contributed some Hotshots lingo. The prayer was changed at the end for the memorial service because some of the crew members who died were not married, said Jim. The Hotshot’s Prayer When I am called to duty, Lord To fight the roaring blaze, Please keep me safe and strong I may be here for days. Be with my fellow crewmembers, as we hike up to the top. Help us cut enough line, For this blaze to stop. Let my skills and hands be firm and quick. Let me find those safety zones, as we hit and lick.

portedly because RMWD stated we would receive no additional recycled water. The use of recycled water instead of potable water for irrigation has reduced costs to Estates homeowners by $1.425 million during the first four years of that 2008 agreement. With the spiraling cost of potable water, those reductions of cost for irrigation water show “savings” will accrue to nearly $4 million by the end of the current

10-year agreement in 2018. As a ratepayer, I stated it is just not that complicated. We local ratepayers believe that since we are paying for it, the recycled water ought to be returned for re-use within our communities! I concluded my remarks by asking LAFCO, or to suggest some other agency, to help us achieve a permanent resolution to this recycled water matter. Ernest Garrett is a ratepayer and Ramona resident.

Hello, Summer It’s time to RIDE

T

he California Riding and Hiking Trail (CRHT) traverses much of San Diego County and north into Riverside County, San Mateo and Los Angeles as well. I’ve only begun to explore this wonderful gem from horseback, so you’ll hear about different segments from time to time. While camping and riding in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, I’ve had the opportunity to see about 25 miles of the CRHT so far. There are currently 108 miles of CRHT trail within the county of San Diego with 76 miles available for use. The CRHT used to be part of the State Trails Plan, but due to the many issues with money, easements/land issues and mapping, among others, the state opted to abandon the

trail in 2007 and gave the counties containing the trail segments the option to adopt it into their trails plans. Thankfully that adoption did happen. The CRHT provides important connections and unique trail experiences within each county. The information and history are vast, so let’s just leave it at that and move on to the trail itself. From Los Vaqueros group camp through the meadowlands of Cuyamaca, the section of the CRHT that I share with you today, winds are gently in tune with the landscape. The grass is dry and high and the summer blooms support the buzzing bees as the breeze keeps Cricket and me cool in the warm morning sun. No water in sight or to my knowledge on this eight-mile trip. Having left camp very early in the morning, I expected to see wildlife, but the bees were the only company. Typically I see numerous deer and of course snakes, maybe an occasional coyote. However they do prefer the cover of the trees and brush that are absent on this particular section of trail. Riding due east the sun is bright in our eyes for the en-

Mary Florine Brewer 1919 – 2013

Mary was a loving mother to her son Ron from Yuma, Arizona and her daughter Margo Boles of San Diego, California. She passed away July 11, 2013, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in McLoud, Oklahoma, October 1, 1919. Her greatest accomplishment and legacy was her family. Survived by 3 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was a 20+ year cancer survivor. The service will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 10am at Grace Community church in Ramona, Calif. She will be laid to rest at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, Calif. at 12 noon on Thursday, July 18, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the American Cancer Society. Pearl Hastings 1920 – 2013

Pearl Joanne Hastings was born Pearl Carmel Prazza in Denver, Colorado on July 16, 1920. She was the third of four children of Italian immigrants who entered this country through Ellis Island in 1904. Her family moved to Chicago when she was a little girl. She grew up in this eventful city during the days of prohibition, gangsters, and great economic depression. As a teenager she worked as a waitress among those infamous gangsters but also in the elegance of

the famous Morrison Hotel where she served the likes of politicians and even Albert Einstein himself. She once went on a date with then famous 1930s movie star, Rudy Vallee. She sang in nightclubs in Chicago and St. Louis. In 1939 she and her sister, Marie, went on a vacation to visit their mother and other family where they had moved to Coronado, California. They never went back. Pearl fell in love with the Palm trees and the weather. She worked, along with most of her family, at the restaurant owned by her mother, Gerry’s Coffee Shop at 10th and Orange Avenues in Coronado during the war years. The ratio of men to women was about 10 to 1 so this pretty woman got lots of attention. She never failed to also share the heartaches caused by war. She married a Marine, Frank “Tex” Hastings and eventually raised three children: Judy, Joe, and Dolores. In 1960 they moved to the brand new community of Clairemont. She always said her greatest blessing was caring for her children and that she was blessed twice when asked to move to Ramona in 1984 to help care for her grandsons, Jesse and Wes Ellis, after retiring from her career as a graphic artist. She lived here for the last 29 years of her long life among the things she loved the most:

animals, plants & trees, her children & grandchildren, and was the greatest Charger and Padre fan ever! Missing her forever are her children Joe Hastings (Kim) & Dolores Mortier (Hal), her grandchildren Jesse Ellis & Wesley Ellis (Amanda), her stepgrandchildren Wendy Flannery (Shawnn), Mark Mortier (Trisha), Joel Mortier (Becky), & Lacey Stone (Logan), and her step-greatgrandchildren who lit up her life until the end. A special thanks to her caregiver and friend, Rebecca Shutters, who accompanied her for the past two years as far as she could go, until Pearl slipped into the presence of God on June 24, 2013. Services will be held on August 24, 2013 at 11am, First Congregational Church. Bonham Bros & Stewart Mortuary and Cremation Service is assisting the family. tire eight miles. At the barbed wire fence there is a small sign stating that we are entering Anza Borrego State Park. I laugh out loud as the thought passes over my mind — ooh, it’s suddenly hot out here in the desert — joking with myself since the landscape showed no sign of change from mountain to desert what-so-ever. This particular section of the trail provides no shade but it is in great condition and is mostly a flat, single track trail. Many of the trails in Cuyamaca can be rocky, but this section of the CRHT is not bad on Cricket’s feet. This has now become a favorite ride of mine up in Cuyamaca. I hope to cross Highway 79 and ride out to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and beyond and tell you about that in the near future. If you are interested in checking out the California Riding and Hiking Trail, there are a few places you can stage from and these days most have a day use fee to go along with them. If you use the Hual-Cu-Cuish staging area, which lies just off Highway 79 across from Trout Pond, you can ride along the Marty Minshall Trail and hook into the Los Vaqueros Trail, which will lead to the CRHT. This will add a few miles to your trip, and in late summer I recommend you ride early. Another suggestion is camping at Green Valley Camp and riding from there. I like the camp, even with its small size and tight parking. This will add approximately seven miles each way to your trip, if you head north, but the area and camp are beautiful and well worth the visit. I strongly suggest you purchase a map of the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park trails for $2 and keep it around, maybe even laminate it. My copy lives in my horse trailer and I take it with me in my saddle bags when Cricket and I go out on trail in Cuyamaca. With more than 100 miles of trail within the park and trails running every which way, a map is my safety net to get back to camp should trail signs be missing. I also use it to plan a ride and to let someone know where we plan to go and for how long. Safety is always a priority. Much of Cuyamaca State Park is closed for camping and riding December through March due to the extreme winter weather often experienced in the area. It is a good idea to check the weather before your visit. All campsites must reserved in advance from California State Parks by using ReserveAmerica.com. Fall and spring are the most popular seasons to ride in Cuyamaca, so plan ahead whether camping overnight or riding for the day. Visit the following websites for more information to safely plan your ride and take some friends along! Hope to see you up there. Business News Tractor Supply drawings pass muster with planning group Planners to discuss shielded parking at future meeting By KAREN BRAINARD Ramona Community Planning Group unanimously approved the site plan for the Tractor Supply Company (TSC) store proposed for Main and Hunter streets. The presentation on July 11, however, led to concerns about the yet-tobe-adopted Ramona form based code and its push to shield parking lots from the main thoroughfare. The developers for the TSC store have been following the draft Ramona Village Center Form Based Code that was created by a consultant working with the Ramona Village Design Group. The document is out for public review and is ex-

pected to be approved by the county Board of Supervisors this fall. According to the county, the code differs from traditional zoning in that it the de-emphasizes use and puts greater emphasis on regulating building appearances within given neighborhoods. Ramona developer Steve Powell, who is working with client Haymes Snedeker on the TSC building, told planners that with the form based code, “the intent is to move the building close to Main Street and then try to shield the parking.” The 20,000-square-foot TSC building therefore has been designed to face Hunter Street with a street scene facade along Main. Access to the parking lot will be from Hunter Street and, at the request of the Ramona Village Design Group and the Ramona

Design Review Board, several landscaping elements will be added along the Main Street side to help conceal the parking, noted Powell. Working with the code and the village design group, Powell also said a corner monument for Main and Hunter was requested. Although what that will be has not been determined, Powell said it would have an “ag flavor,”

Over 33 years as a marketing professional, I’ve noticed two patterns: people try to put me into a “box,” and I typically don’t fit inside. I know myself well enough to understand why this happens: on one hand I’m a right-brained creative writer. On the other I’m a left-brained strategist

projects moving forward and I think we need to be consistent on it whatever that direction is.” “Some of the elements of the parking brings on synergy,” said planner Paul Stykel, who is also on the village design group. “If you see a parking lot empty, you’re not going to go in there. Or, if you can’t see the parking area, you’re not going to go in there, and that’s somewhat

such as a rustic silo. During planners’ concerns at the end of the RCPG meeting, planner Torry Brean, who is also a member of the village design group, brought up the masking of parking lots. “I’m still not 100 percent sure on how I feel on it,” he said, “but I think as a group I would encourage everyone to consider your position on it because that’s going to affect future

and business owner. Many folks just don’t know what to do with me. Some think my inability to be easily defined makes me difficult to work with, but I’d argue it’s my “colorful and offbeat” persona that gives me the creative edge my clients are looking for . It also makes me a bit of a wise guy. You’re shocked. I know. For years my quirky personality has inspired many to zing me back and others wish they could. Perhaps that’s why dozens of people are coming to Temple Adat Shalom this Saturday night to “honor” my status as the Men’s Club “Man of the Year” with a roast. For about two hours I’ll be poked, prodded and mocked by my bride and friends. Or should that read “friends?” Then turnabout is fair play as I get my chance to share my thoughts about them.

From a marketing perspective, one must wonder whether people poking fun at me is healthy for business. As my agency’s leader I set the company’s tone, and since we’re creative we believe in working hard and having fun. Our clients are typically also fun-loving and see us as long-term friends. So my willingness to very publicly take a ribbing is a statement of what to expect if we work together. We’re not for everyone, but that’s probably OK. If you aren’t comfortable with someone willing to make fun of himself, then perhaps I’m not the guy for you. While I’m not suggesting you should also appear on stage to be laughed at by hundreds, actively demonstrating your personality and what makes you different from anyone else may lead someone to think, “He’s creative. I should consider doing

how I feel.” Planner Dennis Sprong requested that a future agenda topic be a review of parking lot concealment and the design-based code. The Ramona Village Center Form Based Code can be viewed at sdcounty.ca.gov/pds/ordamend.html and then click on “Ramona Form Based Code.” Public comments are due by Aug. 2.

County to house reserve fire engine here In a move viewed as a no-cost benefit to the community, Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire will house a reserve engine from the San Diego County Fire Authority, said Battalion Chief Saul Villagomez. “What a great opportunity this is for us,” Villagomez told the Ramona Municipal Water District Board at its July 9 meeting. By housing the reserve engine, the fire department will be able to use it in times of need, according to the district. Villagomez, fire marshal for the Ramona Fire Department, said the Type 2 engine is used for structure fires, accidents, medical aid and wildfires, and is owned and insured by the county, which will also maintain it. The fire authority’s reserve engine will be housed at Station 80 because it is centrally located, said Villagomez. Station 80 is at San Vicente Road and H Street. The Ramona Fire Department has one reserve engine, which is at Station 82 on the west end of town. Villagomez said that housing the county’s reserve engine “allows us to continue the mission to protect the citizens of Ra-

Officials continued to investigate the cause of the fire on Tuesday, but one witness reported the cause was “a truck carrying something emitting hot embers like a barbecue.” “We have a few leads to follow up on,” CalFire Capt. Mike Mohler said

Tuesday morning. The fire started about 1:10 p.m. and firefighters stopped its forward rate of spread at 2:36 p.m., reported Mohler. “The big push was not to get it to Dye Road,” said Black. At least 100 firefight-

ers fought the blaze, said Black, including CalFire/ Ramona, U.S. Forest Service, inmate hand crews and local agency chiefs from Barona. CalFire and forest service helicopters and air tankers dropped water and retardant on the fire, as did a heavy air tanker from Montana that the forest service has contracted. The route of the fire included the area behind Hanson Elementary School. Residents and other onlookers watched, some

When a customer calls me about an infected computer, I am often asked, “Why didn’t my anti-virus program protect me?” The simple answer is that there isn’t a single anti-virus (AV) program that can protect you 100 percent of the time. Understanding why 100 percent protection is not attainable can help you

better protect your computer and avoid the annoyance of an infected computer. While difficult to accept, we are often our own worst enemies when it comes to computer viruses. Many of the viruses I remove were unknowingly, but willfully, installed by the user. A common scenario is that the client gets a popup on their computer stating they have a number of infections or errors that need to be removed or corrected. These pop-ups

are often designed to look like well-known software designed to trick the user into thinking they are legitimate. Once the client has clicked to affirm they want to take care of the problem, they have effectively said, “Yes, I give my permission to download and install.” At this point it is difficult to stop the infection from happening. Once the files containing the virus have begun downloading, your AV will begin scanning them. The first point of failure is the list of virus definitions, (files that tell the AV what to look for) that the AV uses to determine if the files being downloaded are, in fact, a virus.

Viruses are constantly changing to avoid detection and if your AV doesn’t have the latest definitions it may allow a virus to slip past. Another shortcoming is the way some file types are downloaded and scanned. Often the AV can’t fully scan the file until it’s completely downloaded and this delay may be just the time the virus needs to install itself. Of course not all of the fault lies with us as users. Those less than honorable who write the viruses have found it can be very profitable for them and have a strong motivation to keep from being detected. This motivation has produced computer viruses that

have become extremely advanced and difficult to detect. For every attempt made to detect and block the computer virus, a greater effort is being made to circumvent those attempts. You can help your AV program by doing the following: 1) Keep your operating system (Windows, OS X or Linux) up to date. 2) Don’t open emails from people you don’t know. 3) Don’t open attachments from someone unless you are expecting them. 4) Don’t click links in emails; type them in directly into your browser.

5) Do be overly cautious. If something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t. One analogy I’ve heard is to treat your AV like a flu shot. The shot will help, but you still need to take preventive measures such as washing your hands. Use caution when online and take steps to avoid infection. Doing so will allow a powerful anti-virus tool to boost your computer’s immunity system. Terry Koehl, a Ramona resident, owns AccuTech Support, a computer and repair business. Cookies and pies equal another record-breaker for Junior Fair By REGINA ELLING “Oh man, all that stuff is so awesome.” “I just love those chocolate chip cookies. They are the best.” “It’s the pie. I just can’t resist a good pie.” Those comments and more came from individuals in a crowd of nearly 500 on a hot July night. The event was the Ramona Junior Livestock Fair Annual Barbecue and Pie Auction. And as the sun began to fall over the Junior Fairgrounds at Aqua Lane on Saturday, expectations began to rise. Many guests had arrived to support the youth involved in the Ramona Junior Fair by purchasing a dinner. Consisting of salads and other side dishes made by the youngsters themselves, the main attraction of the meal was the barbecue. Buyers could have their choice of beef, pork, or light or dark turkey meat piled high on paper plates. And the kids didn’t mind

if guests asked for some of each, as plates sagging under the weight of it all testified. But dessert was a whole ‘nother story. The meal included no sweets — those were all for sale, covering tabletop after tabletop nearby. Levi Gassaway, former Ramona 4-H’er who arrives from out of state each year to participate, auctioned off the tasty treats. It was not lost on the crowd that he and his wife, Lauren, spent their first anniversary in Ra-

mona, supporting the event last year. A healthy dose of friendly rivalry accompanied a generous community spirit at this year’s event. Whether the bidders were parents, local business owners, community-minded individuals or even curious outof-towners, everyone was quickly reminded of just how different this auction really was. The first item up for bid was a plate of cookies that fetched $145. That set the stage for the many high bids to follow. With plates of cupcakes routinely selling for more than $100, pies for more than $200, and even a basket filled with a variety of brittle garnering $400,

many fair officials felt that this year’s bidders were especially generous. One of the highlights each year is the Pie in the Face, an “award” given to a community member who has gone above and beyond to help the youth. This year’s winner is Patrick Osio, from Ramona Disposal Service. Crissy Tobiason described him as “Always willing to do whatever it takes to help the kids.” Afterward, when he had cleaned up and changed shirts, Osio said, laughing, “It was totally worth it. And that pie was good!” And at the end of the night, all the hard work the youths spent preparing for the event was worth it.

Behind the scenes, it is the work of volunteers, from left, Barbara Pedlow, Carol Roe and Lynne Kotas that keep the bids and items accounted for.

Sentinel photos/Regina Elling

It took two Junior Fair volunteers to show this large basket, filled with numerous items, to the crowd.

The pie auction generated $22,185 for the Junior Fair; another $1,144 came from the barbecue dinner. Last year’s total was $17,500. Ramona Junior Fair Barbecue and Pie Auction is held about two weeks before the Ramona Junior Fair and Livestock Auction, set this year from July 27 through Aug. 4, at the Ramona Junior Fairgrounds, 431 Aqua Lane. The Junior Fair is organized and operated totally through the volunteer efforts of community leaders and participating 4-H, FFA and Grange clubs.

Republican women discuss Hispanic Outreach, sustainable development Intermountain Republican Women Federated ended the 2012-13 season with discussions about sustainable development and Hispanic outreach. The meeting also served as a fundraiser for the group’s Scholarship Program, with themed opportunity baskets such as Garden, Wine, Barbecue, Pool Party and Pasta. The meeting was held in Ramona Oaks Park and many items were for sale, with proceeds going toward scholarships, noted Claudia Weringa, in charge of publicity for the organization. Delores Chavez Harmes, whose

topic was Hispanic Outreach, talked about what conservatives are doing wrong with Hispanics and how to fix it. She distributed information to guests and told the group about the Hispanic radio program she is working on, noted Weringa. Mary Baker led a talk about sustainable development fabricated by the United Nations Brundtland Commission and global elites. She said it is a new livability and religious paradigm that seeks to entrench its core values into every person, business and locality in the world. On the surface, Agenda 21 sounds good, she noted. the project presented the plans to the planning group in April and again in May, seeking feedback. The property is zoned for apartments, so development is by right, Turner noted in May. “If this was not a by right development, I would be voting no for it because I don’t want to see more apartments,” Brean said. “But...I think it’s important to understand that this is something that they’re allowed to develop and, I think for me, I will be supporting because I think it’s the best we could get, given what’s allowed. And, if we just say we don’t want it because we don’t like them, that decision will carry absolutely no weight with the county.” Planners Richard Tomlinson and Matt Deskovick said they agreed. A resident of the Robertson Street area said he just learned about the affordable housing project and was concerned about its impact on the surrounding neighborhood. He asked whether criminal background checks

would be conducted. “We’re very strict on who qualifies and lives in our neighborhoods,” responded Daniel Hernandez with FPI, the property management company that works with AMCAL. Hernandez said they interview renters before they move in and check for felonies and misdemeanors. “We do work with the police department and we have a neighborhood g

watch,” said Hernandez. “We have zero tolerance,” added Turner. AMCAL has developed affordable workforce housing throughout California. Turner said they will participate in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s Crime Free MultiHousing Program. Four other Ramona Valley wineries received silver medals at the fair. Highland Hills won one for its Lola bottle and one for its Lucy entry. Principe di Tricase received one for its 2011 Aglianico. landscape architecture in Newport Beach, said they heard “loud and clear ‘keep the rural nature of Ramona.’” The landscpaing will have a rustic feel, plants will be arranged naturalistically instead of in a row, and organic materials will be incorporated, he said. “Connectivity’s going to be important throughout the community,” he said, pointing out there will be play areas, a pool with shade trellises, a dining

area around outdoor barbecues, and strolling paths. The planning group voted to support the project by a vote of 11-1 with Kevin Wallace opposing. Planner Chad Anderson was not present for the vote, and Carl Hickman and Donna Myers were absent. Turner said the next step will be approval from the county. He said they hope to break ground in November 2014 and complete the project in 15 months.

Two 2009 bottles earned bronze medals for Mahogany Mountain Vineyard and Winery: a Mourvedre and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Pamo Valley Winery won one bronze for a 2010 Tempranillo and one for a 2011 Sangiovese. Woof’n Rose Winery had two 2009 bottles that received bronze medals: an Eglantine and a Merlot. A 2011 Super Tuscan earned Ramona Ranch Winery a bronze. Turtle Rock Ridge Vineyard and Winery's Chocolate Turtle bottle received a bronze. Milagro Farm Vineyards and Winery also took

home a gold medal from the July 6 Tierra Del Vino international competition in Ensenada, Mexico. Milagro Farms Vineyards and Winery is owned by Kit and Karen Sickels. Jim Hart is the winemaker. Tony Ramos, farm manager since 2001, helped clear the land to plant the vines. “Our attention here

is really on quality and attention to detail,” Koniges said. “We’re really focused on getting the maximum quality out of the land that is here. Our focus is estategrown wine.” Of Milagro farm’s 100 acres, 20 acres are in production for wine. “There’s still room to grow,” Koniges said.

Three Ramona wineries will be among those showcased at “Meet the Winemakers” in Santa Ysabel Casino from 5 to 8 p.m. on July 20. In addition to wine tastings, the event will include gourmet hors d’oeuvres and other

Ramona girls win at world horse show in Texas Three Ramona girls came home winners from the American Paint Horse Association’s Youth World Championship (AjPHA) show in Texas. Catalina Gonzalez, 12, won a world championship title in the Novice Youth Reining 18 & Under class and a second world championship title in the Reining 13 & Under group. Catalina, the daughter of Dr. Jaime and Patricia Gonzalez, performed with her horse, Illegal Reward, a 2000 gelding. In the competitions, she was judged on correctly performing a selected pattern, including lead changes, transitions in speed, sliding stops, backing, roll-backs, and multiple spins. Novice youth are classified as competitors ages 18 and under who have not earned a

specified amount of points in APHA-approved competition, and are required to show a horse they personally own or is owned by a family member. Kayleigh Ward, daughter of Don and Pam Brown, earned Reserve World Champion in the 18 & Under working cow horse competition. This was the last year the 19-year-old was eligible to show in the 18 & Under competition. Kayleigh, who performed with her horse, Docs Love Letters, also placed sixth in the Youth Reining 14 to 18. Meryl Hubbard, the 11-year-old daughter of Paul and Chris Hubbard, took home several awards. With her horse, He’s Perfectly Hot, she won third place in the English Equitation Walk-Trot, seventh place in the Hunter Under

Saddle Walk-Trot, ninth in the Western Horsemanship Walk-Trot, and was a finalist in the Trail WalkTrot, said her trainer, Roslyn Proffer-Holloway of Ramona. All three girls are trained by Proffer-Holloway, who owns Roslyn Proffer-Holloway Show Horses. “It’s very exciting to take three kids and all of them come home with such stellar accomplishments,” said the trainer. “It’s fun taking the kids cause there’s so much excitement with them.” The AjPHA Championships were held June 29 to July 6 in Fort Worth. The association hosts two annual world shows to showcase the talents of American paint horses and their owners. This year’s youth

Ramona Intra Boys Under 15 (BU15) team participated in the 5th Annual Kick for Hope tournament July 13 and 14 and came home champions. All proceeds from the tournament benefit children in Africa whose lives

are ravaged by poverty and disease. The boys’ first game ended in a 6-0 win over Hotspurs with goals scored by Eduardo Saucedo (2), Andrick Molinero (2), Israel Torres (1), and Cesar Ramos (1).

Intra’s second game against the Rebels ended in a 0-1 loss. The boys’ third game on Sunday against Poway Vaqueros finished with a 4-2 victory with goals by Molinero (2) and Saucedo (2). Intra advanced to the finals to face the Rebels for the second time in the tournament. The U15 team was victorious with a 1-0 win scored by defender Nathan Rosenblum, numerous assists by the midfielders, stops by the defense, and some amazing saves by the goalies, noted the coaches. “The boys played hard and gave it their all,” said Coach Gabriel Ocampo. “We made a few mistakes in our first game against the Rebels but we used that to correct ourselves and win the championship game.” Intra's next tournament will be the Dave Shelton memorial in Escondido on August 10 and 11.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 573-1965 or visit this Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-49632. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. ROA #: 1 (IMAGED FILE) To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of: MARGARET LOUISE WOODWARD, AKA MARGARET L. WOODWARD A Petition for Probate has been filed by MARCIA L. ANDERSON in the Superior Court of California, County of SAN DIEGO. The Petition for Probate requests that MARCIA L. ANDERSON be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The Petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The Petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court on August 15, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in Dept. PC-2 located at 1409 4th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101-3105 Central Division/Madge Bradley Building. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien.
