After 27 years, drill team stages last show By MARTA ZARRELLA In 1986 Dottie Pierce and her mother, the late Dee Miller, rode with the Shooting Stars Drill Team at the Poway Valley Riders Association in Poway. It was an opportunity to ride together and enjoy memory making and mother/ daughter good times with good friends. “We can do this,” Pierce recalls her mother saying. “Let’s start a drill group in Ramona.” And so it began. The first performance by the group, called the Rainbow Riders, was in 1987 at a rodeo in Gilbert, Ariz. The group became known as the “Blue Angels on Horseback” and received the endorsement of the late rodeo legend Casey Tibbs and Bob Tallman,
18-time National Finals Rodeo announcer. Ramona’s award-winning equestrian Rainbow Riders Drill Team has developed a reputation for thrilling audiences with heart-stopping, fast-paced and intricate precision drill maneuvers. They have performed at the Del Mar National Horse Show for the Night of the Horse celebration every year since 1993, often showing off their skill and precision during the Hunter/Jumper and Dressage nights as well. Their photo albums include many memorable rides all over Southern California and Arizona, including regularly wowing crowds in Santa Barbara at the Old Spanish Days Fiesta Horse Show, Rodeo and Parade. From 2002 to

Appellate court sides with vintners Junior Fair auction, ‘an The California Appellate Court announced Tuesday that it affirms the lower court’s ruling against the San Diego Citizenry Group’s challenge to the four-tiered county winery ordinance, reported Carolyn Harris, a winery owner and general counsel of the Ramona Valley Winery Association. The ruling means that, absent an appeal to the California Supreme Court, San Diego County will not need to revisit the environmental impact report that was prepared in advance of the county supervisors’ adoption of the ordinance in August 2010, and the enforceability of the ordinance should remain unchanged, said Harris. The three-judge panel heard oral arguments June 14 on the citizenry group’s appeal of its 2011 environmental challenge. According to Harris, the panel dis-
agreed with each of the appellants’ arguments that the EIR had an inadequate discussion of mitigation measures, failed to adequately address a measure adopted in 2008 to mitigate boutique wineries’ traffic impacts on private roads, provided insufficient information regarding impacts to water supplies, had a misleading discussion of grading permits, and included an inadequate statement of overriding considerations. In the appellants’ favor, the judges granted a $6,067.94 credit on the fees they were charged by the county for the cost to transcribe the proceedings of the San Diego County Planning Commission hearings on the winery ordinance. investment in our future’ Ramona’s 42nd annual Junior Fair showcases 512 feathered and four-legged entries. That’s not counting the 17 horses, 23 dogs and 220 home ec projects waiting for the judges’ and public’s approval. The junior fair at 431 Aqua Lane opened July 27 and continues through Aug. 4. The highlight for most 4-H, FFA and Grange participants is the livestock auction on Saturday, Aug. 3. Buyer check-in starts at 11 a.m., and auction of swine, rabbits, goats, chickens and sheep at 1. Depending on their ani-
mal, youngsters spend from 2 to 11 months preparing the animal for the fair and as much as $3,500 or more to buy and feed it. They hope for high bids so they make a profit. “It’s more than a program,” longtime 4-H’er and 4-H leader Crissy Tobiason said. “It’s an investment in our future...We’re building people who give back and work and care about society. Bottom line, that's what the Ramona Junior Fair is all about.” Admission and parking are free. For details, see ramonajuniorfair.com.

New principal sees middle school as a crossroads for students This is the first in a series about new leaders at Ramona Unified School District schools. By PIXIE SULSER After 25 years in the Ramona Unified School District, Olive Peirce Middle School Principal Linda Solis retired, leaving what she refers to as “the best middle school in the inner-galactic planetary solar system” in the hands of her former teammate, Pauline Leavitt. For the past two years, Leavitt has held the principal reins at James Dukes Elementary. Before that, she spent four years working with Solis as OPMS assistant principal. “Pauline is an incredible person,” said Solis. “She is a talented instructional leader and passionate about kids and their successful learning. I can think of no one better equipped to lead OPMS successfully into the future She is loved by the entire OPMS team — and most especially by me!” During Leavitt’s tenure at
James Dukes, she and her staff implemented the No Excuses University concept creating an atmosphere on the elementary campus that college is an option for all students. Although she arrived at JD with a detailed background in education, Leavitt said that through her time as a Coyote she really learned the strength of the parent community. “The parents at JD have supported the students, the school and me in so many amazing ways,” she said. “Words cannot express my appreciation for these relationships. I definitely plan to continue building parent connections at OPMS.” Her further plans for OPMS include continuing with the Professional Learning Community model that she believes promotes learning for students as well as teachers. Additionally, she wants to raise money for technology, implement an online middle school program and remain focused on preparing students to become college and career ready.
“I love the middle school age,” said Leavitt. “I truly believe that middle school is a crossroads for students. It is such an important time in their lives. Linda Solis created a huge pattern of success for students, and I want to continue helping students grow into themselves and into their leadership abilities.” The education business has been a part of Leavitt’s life since she was born. Her father was a teacher, and as she puts it, “As a child, I watched my father change the lives of his students, help other teachers strengthen their skills, and constantly push himself as a learner…I always wanted to be just like him. Add that to the fact that I have always adored learning and working with children, education seemed like the perfect career path for me.” Leavitt began her career by teaching reading to young men in the court school system. Although this was a short time in her life, she describes the period as having a huge impact.
Pauline Leavitt, right, Olive Peirce Middle School’s incoming principal, and Linda Solis, former OPMS principal, hold the quilt Leavitt’s mother made for Solis when Solis retired in June. It contains all of the school’s T-shirts during Solis’ tenure as principal.
“Working in the court schools will stick with me forever,” she said. “It made me realize the gravity of my role as an educator and the difference I can make and the difference education can make in someone’s life.” For the next several years she worked in the San Diego City School system as a classroom teacher at various grade levels before
moving to a middle school where she divided her time between teaching struggling learners how to succeed in the classroom and acting as a peer coach for new teachers. Later she was a literacy administrator leading staff development, creating curriculum and modeling best teaching practices. Before joining the Ramona district as assistant principal at OPMS, Leavitt
spent two years as an assistant principal at an elementary school that had “a huge discipline problem which was affecting learning.” Leavitt collaborated with the staff and community to create an after-school sports program in which only students without discipline referrals could participate. “Within a month of implementing the sports program, the referrals went from 100 a week to less than five,” she said. “The immediate result was students in class learning as well as showing respect for their teachers and for their community. Additionally, I teamed with an artist from Chollas Park and the students created a school mural on campus which is now considered a local landmark.” When she isn’t immersed in researching strategies to improve student learning, researching plans for professional development or working with students, Leavitt enjoys cooking, painting and spending time with her family.

County seizes 22 horses, other animals from Ramona resident Two months after the County Department of Animal Services (DAS) impounded 10 horses from property on State Route 78 in Ramona, another 22 were seized from the same owner. DAS had been monitoring the herd belonging to Lori Patton since the original seizure May 23 to make sure the animals were receiving the proper level of care. Patton had moved the horses to property on Old Julian Highway, according to animal services. Animal control officers noted a number of horses were becoming thin and posted a notice at Patton’s property July 15 stating the animals would be seized if conditions didn’t improve, the county reported. Patton requested a hearing to contest the proposed seizure. The hearing was held Friday, July 19, and the hearing officer’s decision Monday, July 22, authorized DAS to seize all the animals on the property. A total of 22 horses and foals, four dogs, four puppies, one cat, one rabbit,

one guinea pig and three mice were taken from the property in the 25000 block of Old Julian Highway between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. last Monday, said Harold Holmes, deputy director of the North County region of Animal Services. “The owner was not providing the necessary care to improve the health of the horses, which left us no choice but to seize her animals and take them into protective custody,” said Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson. “The criminal investigation is
continuing and we are unable to share more information at this time.” A veterinarian examined the horses and found they were all below the proper weight and some needed dental care, according to DAS. Treatment is under way. Holmes said the veterinarian’s findings are part of the investigation and a report will be submitted to the district attorney’s office for review. Some of the horses and all of the other animals were taken to the DAS facility in Carlsbad. The rest

of the horses are being boarded at secure locations, said Holmes. Animal control officers, assisted by the San Diego Humane Society and its Animal Rescue Reserves, used six trailers to remove the animals, said Holmes. San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies stood by, but Holmes said, “We did not have any difficulty with Ms. Patton at all.” As part of the administrative process, Patton has
14 days to reclaim her animals if she shows she can provide the necessary care and attention for them and if she can pay the cost of their impoundment, housing and medical care. According to Holmes, that initial fee is about $14,000. On May 20, a total of 30 horses were found on property that appeared abandoned off State Route 78 east of town by members of the Intermountain Fire and Rescue Depart-
ment. Officials said the horses had no food or water. Animal control officers seized 10 of the horses from Patton a few days later, after she had moved the others to the Old Julian Highway location. Of those 10 horses, Holmes said one had to be euthanized and two were reclaimed by Patton after she paid the required fees. According to the county, others have been adopted.

RMWD director’s meeting absence draws board criticism By KAREN BRAINARD For the sixth consecutive meeting, the elected director of Ramona Municipal Water District’s Division II has been absent and Board Chair Darrell Beck, citing government code, said it’s time to be addressed. At the July 23 RMWD board meeting, Beck asked that the issue be placed on the Aug. 13 agenda. “It appears that he’s abandoned his seat and his obligation to the people that elected him,” Beck said of Director Kit Kesing-
er. Division II covers the west side of town, roughly from Pine Street, Sawday, Keyser and Oak Valley, reaches north of Haverford Road, and includes the Mussey Grade Road area. “It’s important that directors make meetings a priority,” said Board Vice President and Division IV Director Joe Zenovic. “Not showing up or even picking up agenda packages for months on end is just not acceptable. No communication from the director in Division No. 2 in the last six meetings is not
YANA, health apps among topics at CERT meeting Representatives of the Sheriff's Senior Volunteer Patrol will discuss the You Are Not Alone (YANA) program when the Ramona Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Also at the meeting, Naomi Broering of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine will present various mobile applications, or apps (for smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices) useful for sharing or accessing health information for first responders, disaster workers and healthcare professionals utilizing the resources of the National Library of Medicine. The YANA training will include information about the health and safety of senior citizens in the Ramona area. It will identify how CERT interfaces with YANA constituents. The meeting is free and open to the public. Persons planning to attend are advised to arrive early to obtain a seat. acceptable.” Zenovic pointed out that it’s been 90 days since Kesinger attended a meeting and said he either needs to come prepared or let someone else take his seat. But Kesinger, in an emailed response to the Sentinel, said Zenovic and Beck voted to change the meeting time to 2 p.m. so that he would not be able to attend. The board meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month and in July 2012 agreed to switch its meeting time from 4:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. — a change that Kesinger, who works out of town, opposed. The time “prevents citizens who have a typical (9 to 5) work day outside of Ramona from attending,”
Kesinger said. “Citizens who have business with the board must take time off work, which results in loss of income, disruption of their work day and risks losing their job. “Meeting times at 2 p.m. discourage working people from trying to get elected to the board. This results in a board that’s dominated by the Ramona business community and retirees. There’s nothing wrong with Ramona’s business community and retirees, but I don’t believe in an extra burden on people working outside of Ramona who want to represent their community,” said Kesinger. Beck referred to California Government Code

of his or her office for the period of three consecutive months, except when prevented by sickness, or when absent from the state with the permission required by law.” Kesinger said attending meetings is not the only way a director discharges his duties and that he does so in other ways but he did not go into detail. He noted that he receives board correspondence from staff. As to the meeting time, Zenovic pointed out that since the meeting was moved to 2 p.m., public attendance has ranged from three to 21 people. “The move to 2 seems to be accessible,” he said.

Contests add to Country Fair Those who missed the pie-eating contest at the country fair Sunday afternoon lost an opportunity to witness eight of their neighbors dive into lemon meringue pies — head first, no hands — with spirit, energy and anticipation of being the first to down “the whole thing.” Family, friends and onlookers gathered ‘round the contest table to cheer on the entrants, shoot video and take photos. It was one of the highlights of a weekend of highlights presented by Ramona Chamber of Commerce assisted by a string of sponsors, volunteers and community boosters. While some have criticized what they call the unsavory element that sometimes shows up at a carnival once the sun sets, that wasn’t what we saw as we strolled through the carnival portion of the fair and saw children having fun under the watchful eyes of parents and other adults, and pre-teens and teens seemingly inconspicuous as they checked out who else was there. Many Ramona young people look forward to the fair each summer. For teens, it’s a place to go to be seen, to connect with classmates they may not have seen since June, to have fun, to be kids. For families, it’s a place to enjoy family time, to create memories. For young children, it’s discovering cotton candy, carnival rides, trinkets and whatever else catches their eye. We’re thankful Ramona still has a country fair. As long as the community refuses to surrender a good thing to a few troubleseekers who may show up now and then, this family tradition will have a place here.
Time to reward hardworking youth The best thing that happened to Ramona Junior Fair was shifting the livestock portion away from the country fair. It gives the public more time to enjoy each. This week is crucial to our 4-H and FFA youth. They've invested time, money and a great deal of planning and work into preparing their animals for the livestock auction on Saturday. Now it's our turn. With help and guidance from their adult leaders, they've set the stage and prepared quite a show for us. Let's acknowledge them by rewarding them with generous bids.
The Ramona Rainbow Riders Drill Team leaves a legacy that made this community proud. You will be missed. Maybe, down the road, someone else will try to walk in your footsteps. Those will be big shoes to fill, but those equestrians will be supported and admired as you have been. Until then, this community thanks you for your hours in the saddle, the sacrifices you’ve made in the name of the Rainbow Riders and the many occasions that you rode hard and made us all very proud. Sentinel Reader Opinion Being prepared: Key in any disaster On behalf of the Ramona Fire Department and Cal Fire, I wanted to thank all who participated in and attended the wildfire preparedness meeting Tuesday, July 16. There were many good questions and comments by all. I wanted to stress the most important topic, being prepared. No matter what type of emergency, the community needs to be prepared. For instance, one of the most valuable things you can do before a wildfire is provide 100 feet of defensible space, protecting your home and
providing safety. In a study conducted after Australia’s Black Saturday Fires in 2009 that killed 173 people and injured 414, professors from the University of California at Berkeley and the Australian National University gathered 12,000 measurements around 500 houses that were affected by the fires. “Clearing trees and shrubs within 40 meters (131 feet) was the most effective form of fuel reduction on Black Saturday.” The researchers went on to say that “No amount of fuel reduction will guarantee that a house is safe on extreme weather days like Black Saturday, so it is crit-

ical that other measures, such as early evacuation, safer places and architectural solutions are considered by every resident in fire-prone areas in addition to, or instead of, fuel reduction,” They went on to say, “We predicted that modifying several fuels could theoretically reduce house loss by 76 percent to 97 percent, which would translate to considerably fewer wildfire-related deaths.“ This study like many others shows the importance of being prepared. Remember, “You provide the defense and we will provide the offense!” A great place to get information and education on preparing for emergencies can be found at www.readysandiego.org or by visiting your local fire station. Let’s get Orosco Ridge open again Our shooting area has been closed a long time. The last time I used it, I took my son-in-law (a former captain in the Marines) and his brother (a current Lt. Col. Marine helicopter pilot) and we did some good bonding as well as shooting. The USDA Forest Service who runs this park states that they closed the park due to environmental concerns. I assume they mean lead bullets and brass. I have sent a letter off to them asking them ”if we clean up the area and maintain it, will they open it up again?” In addition to the below, I ask any other gun enthusiasts in Ramona to get together and form a grassroots committee to get us a public place where we See LETTERS, page 9

County: Suicides remain high, drug overdoses hit record high in 2012 Nine Ramonans committed suicide in 2012 and nine died of overdoses, according to a county Medical Examiner’s Office report. A record number of people succumbed to suicide and fatal prescription-drug overdoses in the San Diego area last year, based on statistics in the countywide report released July 24. Additionally, the number of homicides rose in 2012, for the second consecutive year. “Our office investigates every non-natural death in San Diego (County), and tragically many of these deaths are preventable,” Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Jonathan Lucas said. “The report reveals some of the serious issues and behaviors affecting … residents and visitors.” In all, the agency investigated 2,853 deaths, performed 1,962 autopsies and conducted 901 external examinations in 2012. Of those fatalities, 44 per-
cent were due to accidents, 36 percent resulted from natural causes, 15 percent were suicides and 4.6 percent were homicides. In 1 percent of cases, no manner of death could be determined. There were 413 suicides in the county last year, for a rate of 13.1 per 100,000 population, according to the report. Though that rate has risen for six years in a row, it did not reach a record last year. The highest was 14.5 in 1993. Based on the medical examiner’s report, six Ramona men and three women committed suicide last year. The men were ages 13, 24, 27, 30, 46 and 53. The women were ages 44, 52, and 53. The 2012 number of prescription-drug overdoses in the county — 269 — was an alltime maximum, an outcome the county agency described as “part of a disturbing trend seen over the last seven years.” The
figure, however, was up only by two over the 2011 tally. Heroin deaths continued an increase in frequency seen after 2007, with heroin the most common drug or medication in those from age 20 to 29 who died of an accidental overdose. Excluding alcohol, methamphetamine — still the primary cause of drug-related deaths for the population as a whole — continued a four-year local increase, being linked to 142 fatalities in 2012. It was the most common substance in those between 40 and 69 years old who died from accidental overdoses. Nine Ramona deaths were the result of overdoses, seven men and two women: •Female, 46, alcohol •Female, 53, prescription medication •Male, 23, illicit drug and alcohol •Male, 30, illicit drug •Male, 45, prescription medi-
cation and alcohol • Male, 49, illicit drug • Male, 51, illicit drug • Male, 49, prescription medication and alcohol • Male, 53, prescription medication and alcohol The number of homicides in 2012 increased to 122, compared with 91 the prior year, according to the report. The past two years of increases came after the county reached a 20-year low in 2010. Three of those homicides were in Ramona: a 94-year-old woman, a 38-year-old male, and an 8-month-old female infant. A total of 270 people died in motor-vehicle accidents, compared with 242 in 2011. Such deaths, however, still are occurring at about half the rate of the early 1990s. The years 2010-12 each saw fewer traffic-related deaths and lower rates since 1988. Of drivers killed in car ac-
cidents, 43 percent were over the legal limit for blood-alcohol content. Of 130 people who died in vehicle crashes, 42 were not wearing seat belts, while 67 were. Seat-belt use could not be determined in 20 of the cases, and one fatality involved a golf cart. The leading cause of natural death locally in 2012 remained cardiovascular disease. The Medical Examiner’s Office advised anyone who might be at risk for suicide or a drug overdose, and their loved ones, to look into the following resources: •County Behavioral Health Access and Crisis Line, 888-7247240; •Suicide prevention and awareness information online at up2sd.org; and •The 211 telephone service, which offers referrals to numerous family and individual assistance programs.
Julian Garrido receives middle school’s first Sousa Award Eighth-grade musician Julian Garrido has been chosen as the first recipient of the Sousa Award for outstanding, all-around leadership and musicianship at Olive Peirce Middle School. “Julian exemplifies the well-rounded musician and scholar that this award recognizes,” said OPMS band director Karl Lampe. “It has

been exciting to watch Julian’s growth over the past five years and I am so happy that his accomplishments have been recognized,” An active member in the Ramona Unified School District band program for five years, Garrido will enter high school in late August and will participate in the Ramona High School
Royal Regiment. He began playing clarinet in grade school and distinguished himself early as a leader and a musician, Lampe noted. Always prepared and always working beyond expectations, Garrido showed potential from his first day in band, said Lampe, adding that Garrido is an outstanding stu-
dent academically and has received many certificates acknowledging his accomplishments. In addition to mastering the soprano clarinet, Garrido contributed to the band by learning to play the bass clarinet and alto saxophone, said the band director. This past school year was especially busy for Garrido, said
Lampe, as he led the OPMS Advanced Band in preparation for Southern California School Band and Orchestra festivals by helping to organize the students for rehearsals outside of class, and by taking charge during class time to conduct the band and prepare the music for festival performance. “Julian was able to stand

Auction: Great place to learn about 4-H When you think of the Ramona
Junior Fair Livestock Auction, you probably think of people bidding and buying animals. Another way to think about it is tons of 4-H’ers to talk to you about 4-H. After having a conversation with a 4-H member, you might just decide that 4-H is the perfect activity for your family. Four-H is a great activity for the whole family, because there are lots of choices in what projects you can partake. You’re not required to go to every event, and that makes 4-H flexible for many busy schedules. The auction is a great place to learn about 4-H, because both leaders and members are there and pleased to speak with you. Ramona Stars is the club I am pleased to call mine for the past seven years. I am constantly encouraged to do better because, after all, the 4-H Motto is, “To Make the Best Better.” Elizabeth Dean Ramona
JULIAN GARRIDO in front of his peers and successfully conduct the band, but more importantly he was able to identify areas that were done exceptionally well, correct items that needed fixing and teach the band how to produce a better sound through his ability to have the concept of what the music should sound like,” Lampe said. Through his efforts and help, the Advanced Band earned excellent ratings at festivals in Oceanside, Temecula and at Ramona High School, said Lampe. Garrido was vice president of the Band Council, steering the band to community events, including two projects that helped beautify the OPMS campus, Lampe added. The council also helped raise enough funds to take the band students on trips to Chapman University, San Diego State University, San Elijo Hills Middle School, Lexington Junior High, Disneyland®, and Knott’s Berry Farm.

Business News New home construction under way By JESSICA KING Three new homes are being built along San Vicente Road, a possible signal that Ramona is rebounding from the housing downturn. The homes, sandwiched between 12th Street and Barger Place, just northwest of Grace Community Church, are scheduled to be complete in October. Crews began constructing the homes in mid-July. Two of the three homes in the so-called Trifecta Homes Project have already been sold, leaving one up for grabs, said Ramona Realtor Jeff Gan of ReMax Direct.
The San Diego-area, including Ramona, was one of the 13th hardest hit housing markets in the housing downturn, according to La Jolla-based real estate research firm, MDA DataQuick. According to the latest report released from the U.S. Census Bureau, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, building permits issued for new homes in June were up 16.1 percent from a year earlier. The government agencies also reported that construction that began on new homes in June was up 10.4 percent from June 2012 and new

homes that were completed last month were up 20.2 percent in the same year-over-year comparison. July figures are scheduled to be released Aug. 16. Each home in the Trifecta Homes Project is being built on a roughly one-acre lot with either a Craftsman or Southern California Mission aesthetic, according to Powaybased homebuilder KirE Builders Inc. Plans call for each to range in size from 1,940 square feet to 2,190 square feet, and each will have four bedrooms and 2-and-a-half to 3-and-ahalf bathrooms. Crews are also building three-car garages and covered patios for each home. Of the two homes that have been sold, one was in the mid-$400,000 range and the other, high $400,000, according to KirE builders. The third is priced in the low $400,000 range.

CASH MOBBED—As the first business in Ramona to be “cash mobbed,” Nicole LeCureaux, behind counter, owner of Adorn Boutique, 865 Main St., is inundated with customers last Tuesday.
Cash mob clears hangers in clothes shop Adorn Boutique was the first business to be “cash mobbed” in Ramona. A cash mob is a group of people who assemble at a local business to make purchases, explained Stacy Bart at Unicorn Books & Gifts. “The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community. It is meant to be fun! There is no political or other agenda, just an opportunity to promote local Ramona in a positive and effective way.” Cash mob organizers in Ramona will
post an event a few days prior and then the actual location 30 minutes before, noted Bart. “The element of surprise is part of the fun, so don’t alert the business owner,” she warned. Times and days of the week will vary as will the types of businesses. The more people involved, the better so tell your friends! To learn more about cash mob, see Ramona cash mob on Facebook or contact Bart at 760-788-3700.

‘Horses and Champions.’ The movie was shot in Winchester. It was hot and the day was long. The horses were fantastic, they were tacked up and ready to go, but we had to stand there and wait our turn which didn’t come till late in the day. We got the shot in one take. The director couldn’t believe it! He
had us ride one more time just because they never get a shot in one take.” Dottie Pierce “We have had performances where bridles got hooked together, one time a bridle broke. Once Marilyn was bucked into the horse’s neck and managed to get herself back over the horn and into the saddle without missing a beat. One time Marie Settle’s

These women also rack up hours on horseback just because of their love of riding. When unplanned events happen in front of hundreds of people at a rodeo or other horse show, the show does not stop. The team is so connected that they follow their line leaders and keep the performance moving. Pierce has been known to change a routine during the ride, either because of a situation in the arena, or something happening with a horse or rider. Her line leaders follow her and the riders follow them. No one in the audience would know they had watched anything but a well-rehearsed routine. Now and then a rider has had to pull out, sometimes broken

equipment or an injured horse will require a team’s partner to also pull out. In 27 years, that has not happened often. One of the most memorable performances was in 1995 or '96 in the City of Industry. “There was a three or four hour downpour of rain and the rodeo was not called off,” said Pierce. The horses were
fully dressed in their show tack, and the riders in white shirts and black pants got soaked as they waited to perform. “We did our ride and then had to help each other out of our clothes because they were soaked and stuck to us," said Arnaiz. was awful, we didn’t have enough blankets, but the performance was great and everyone loved it.” Dr. Miska Paget, DVM, said she had the pleasure of being part of the performance team in its last two years. “There are so many things that have made an impression on me and my life about the Rainbow Rider experience," she said. ters. There are inside jokes and phrases you learn that become a part of your vocabulary, like: ‘Ready Set? — Go out — You’re LONG – Footsteps!’ Dottie’s voice will forever echo in my mind. I have been lifted and carried by those ladies through several life tragedies. I have done some lifting and carrying myself for other gals. As a group of performers, it is safe to say that we are all pretty much perfectionists. We wanted to put on an amazing show with perfect lines, perfect spacing and happy
smiles. Sometimes that happened and we were on the top of the world as we galloped out of the arena. Sometimes — well, let’s just say things happen! My most favorite oops happened in Flintridge when one of the lead girls' shirt popped open and she lost her place in the routine as she was trying to button up her blouse. There was a little directive yelling that ensued from those that could see what was happening. We somehow got back on course and buzzed out of the arena at the end. Our frustration melted into giggles as we
drove home.” Pierce kept the Rainbow Riders strong and healthy as a tribute to her mother, Dee Miller, who died in an accident during a drill team performance in Lakeside many years ago. “After spending more than half my life devoted to the Rainbow Riders Drill Team, the team’s last official appearance will be at the Santa Barbara Horse Show and Rodeo in Santa Barbara, Aug 1-4," said Pierce. "After 27 years, the Rainbow Riders Mounted Drill Team, also known as the Blue Angels on Horseback, will be retired. I love

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Salinas team roping pays off for Marcus Battaglia By JOE NAIMAN Marcus Battaglia won $2,567 during California Rodeo Salinas. The Ramona cowboy was a team roping header and partnered with Jordan Ketscher of Squaw Valley at the July 18-21 rodeo. They each earned $2,221 for sixth place in the average, $253 for sixth place in the short go, and $93 for splitting eighth and ninth place in the fourth go-round. “That’s a really good job, especially in the circuit,” Battaglia said. “We didn’t win it, but we got money out of it.” The Salinas money increased Battaglia’s 2013 season earnings in California Circuit rodeos to $5,302, which ranks sixth among headers. The top 12 earners will qualify for the California Circuit finals. California Rodeo Salinas is the highest-paying rodeo in California, with a total payoff this year of $408,472. The times for events out of the chute don’t look as impressive as those from arenas with shorter chutes. “It’s a long arena,” Battaglia explained. All team ropers were given four steers, and the teams with the best averages advanced to the short
go. “My game plan was to go do my job and catch all my steers,” Battaglia said. Battaglia and Ketscher made their first run the morning of July 18 and were one position away from earning money. They also had qualified runs, but not fast enough to place, on their July 19 and July 20 runs. Their fourth run was on the morning of Sunday, July 21. “On Sunday we had a good steer,” Battaglia said. “We had two really good ones on Thursday and Friday.” Their fourth go-round time of 8.3 seconds split eighth and ninth place and earned them $93 each. “It all counts, I guess,” Battaglia said of splitting the final go-round paying position. “It paid big money in the average.” The short go was held on the afternoon of July 21. Their sixth-place time of 8.8 seconds gave Battaglia and Ketscher the final paying place. Eight places in the average earned money. Battaglia and Ketscher had an average of 48.3 seconds. The cowboys who shared seventh and eighth place each had averages of 48.6 seconds. “To place at Salinas out of 100 teams is something else,” Battaglia said.
Planners to discuss building facades, parking lots at Thursday’s meeting Masking parking lots and buildings through the use of facades will be discussed by members of the Ramona Community Planning Group at Thursday night’s meeting. The topic was suggested at last month’s RCPG meeting after members brought up concerns about shielding parking lots as recommended in the draft Ramona Village Town Center Plan. The plan creates form based codes for the town center and is available for public review at sdcounty.ca.gov/pds/ordamend.html#Ramona Town Center Plan. Comments are due by Aug. 5, and should be addressed to Joe Farace by email at joseph. farace@sdcounty.ca.gov. Written comments should be sent to Planning and Development Services, 5510 Overland Ave., San Diego, CA 92123 to the attention of Joe Farace. The planning group meets at 7 p.m. in the Ramona Library Community Room, 1275 Main St.

Roberts wins trampoline national championship By JOE NAIMAN Ramona’s Ryan Roberts is the men’s senior elite double mini trampoline national champion. He won the title at the national trampoline and tumbling competition in Kansas City. “I’m super excited that it all finally happened,” Roberts, 21, said of his gold medal. A double mini trampoline has a sloped side and a flat side, and the gymnasts use both in their routines prior to the dismount. Roberts scored 75.0 points to take first place. The silver medal winner had a score of 74.8 points. A successful protest made the difference for Roberts. Scoring is based in part
on degree of difficulty, and initially the judges claimed that during his first pass he repeated a trick he had used in the preliminaries. That denied him points for that part of the routine. “After my first pass we had to protest,” Roberts said. He won the protest and proceeded to his second pass. “Did very well on that one,” he said. Roberts, a lifelong Ramona resident and a 2010 Ramona High School graduate, was 10 when he took up competitive trampoline and 11 when he won a gold medal in synchronized trampoline at the 2003 nationals. This is his fourth year on the men’s national team. Although Grossmont Col-
lege does not have men’s gymnastics, Roberts dives for the Griffins’ aquatic program in addition to his competitive trampoline and tumbling activities. Roberts is ranked first for the men’s national team, which means that his expenses will be paid if he qualifies for the world championships in Bul-

By BILL TAMBURRINO Jessica Failla,14, has had a very busy and successful summer that included winning the National Tennis Tournament 16 and Under singles title at Lakewood, Calif., and making it to the finals in the 16U doubles competition. Her strong performance at Lakewood earned the Ramona teen a spot on Team Southern California.

Ramona Pony all-star teams advance to Super Regionals Ramona Pony Baseball all-star teams had a busy summer competing in San Diego County and beyond. Summer activity started in the 2013 all-star double-elimination tournaments, with Ramona represented by teams in all age groups, and ended with two teams advancing to Super Regionals. Ramona Pony Baseball hosted the Pony Sectionals on the Ramona Pony Baseball fields, attracting teams from the South and East sections of San Diego County. Ramona teams competed in all eight age groups ranging from
14 years and under to 7 years and under, with the top teams in each bracket earning a chance to compete in the next tournament, Pony Regionals. Ramona proved it has some young baseball talent with seven teams advancing to Regionals, where the 12U team won the Sectional Championship against Chula Vista South. The Pony Regional Tournament showcases the top all-star teams in the county. All of the Ramona teams battled hard throughout their tournaments, coachSee BASEBALL on page 27
Team So Cal took second place in the Intersectional Team Clay Court Tournament in Louisiana. That earned Jessica an invite to the National Clay Court Tournament in Virginia Beach as an individual. Jessica’s biggest challenge is scheduled for Aug. 3-11 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Because her national rankings have skyrocketed, Jessica has earned a berth in the Girls National Tournament, a U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament in the 16U Division that will be held at the Barnes Tennis Center. A first place finish there will get Jessica into the U.S. Open. “The USTA Girls 16 and 18 National Champions are the most prestigious and important hard court tennis tournament for girls aged 18 and 16 and under in the United States. The most outstanding performers of the last year and the future of American tennis will be playing against each other often for the first time this year. Along with a national championship on the line, wild card entry to the main draw of the U.S. Open Women’s Championship for the 18’s champion and a wild card entry into the U.S. Open’s Junior Championship for the 16’s champion are at stake,” explained Jessica. With some hometown fans behind her, Jessica could earn a trip to the U.S. Open Junior Championship in Flushing Meadows in New York City from Aug. 26 to Sept. 6. A trip to the Big Apple would be a nice way for Jessica to finish a great summer. Hometown fans can watch Jessica play at the Aug. 3-11 Girls National Tournament. To find out what times she will be playing, call the tennis center at 619-221-9000.

We will be the first group out and we will be able to play through after the first round. We want to lessen the monetary burden that the parents of our golfers have to bear. We would like to buy team uniforms, balls and hopefully golf bags for our golfers. Our girls deserve the best. They work hard and they are great kids,” said Rathbun.
“John has done this twice and he says that it is a lot of fun. If it goes well I may try to do it again to help the boys teams in the spring,” said Patenaude. One hundred holes of golf is just over 5-1/2 rounds of golf, which is 28 more holes than a complete professional tournament. The fundraiser will be a test of skill and endurance, especially if it is played in 100 degrees heat. “If it is not over 100 degrees I will be surprised,” said Patenaude.
