Amphitheater, soccer , skateboard park top parks list By KAREN BRAINARD A new list of recreational projects to be considered for Park Lands Dedication Ordinance (PLDO) funding received Ramona Community Planning Group approval Aug. 1. Approximately $648,000 is available in county PLDO funds for recreational uses in Ramona. Jim Cooper, chair of the Parks and Recreation Subcommittee of the planning group, sought projects for consideration, requesting each project be represented by a

“champion.” At the July 22 Parks and Rec Subcommittee meeting, champions of seven proposed projects gave presentations. The subcommittee then prioritized the projects for funding. Although a skateboard park was listed as No. 5 on the proposed Project Priority List, the planning group moved it to the No. 3 spot, after a recommendation from RCPG Chair Jim Piva. “As far as I’m concerned the skatepark has been the one project in the community that has been there the longest,” Piva told

the Sentinel. The following priority list was approved by a vote of 8-0, with Cooper abstaining and six members absent. 1. Amphitheater fencing, sod and seed Champion: Art Thomsen. The amphitheater area in Ramona Community Park across from the Pony Baseball and soccer fields has a long history in Ramona, according to Thomsen, and could serve as a community gathering place if amenities were developed. Potable water and

electrical exists, sprinklers are in and a stage area with shade is under development. Fencing is needed to keep off-roaders away from the area, and sod and seeding will allow the bowl area to be developed for family use. Funds requested: $27,500. 2. Ramona Soccer League expansion Champion: Kathy Mckown Mckown presented an overview of the current soccer league field inadequacies. The league proposSee PARKS & RECREATION, page 10

In the latest administrative move at Ramona Unified School District, trustees selected Melissa “Missy” Cobian as Olive Peirce Middle School’s assistant principal, effective Aug. 5. Cobian, the middle school’s librarian and technology leader since 1998, thanked the trustees for the opportunity and for their support at their special meeting Monday morning. “I’m excited,” she said after the meeting. Cobian’s career in education started as a seventhand eighth-grade teacher in Newton, Kansas. She is married to lifelong Ramona resident Joseph Cobian. Their daughter Katie was valedictorian of Ramona High School’s Class of 2012. Their son Marco

is a sophomore at Ramona High. One almost needs a chart to keep track of the changes since several administrators retired, resigned or received promotions. Effective this school year, the district has six new principals, two new assistant principals and two new administrators in the district office. Schools with new principals are: •Ramona High School, Christopher King •Olive Peirce Middle School, Pauline Leavitt •Ramona Elementary School, Daniel Paquette •Ramona Community School, Kathryn Gunderson •James Dukes Elementary School, Joy Harris See SCHOOLS, page 3

Teachers new to the district include OPMS art teacher Catherine Phillips, OPMS social science teacher Tyson Knierim and RHS science teacher Mitchell Donelley and RHS agriculture teacher Alyson Tulloch. Also hired is school psychologist Alexis Roldan. Applications for two teachers on assignment were due this week. The two hired will work in the district office and will have a combination of assignments, said Newman. Only candidates already working in the district will be considered. In addition to their salary for a 184-day work year, they will receive a 7 percent stipend and additional days at a per diem rate as needed, states the district’s job posting. “A big focus will be helping the district with the implementation of the common core,” he said, referring to academic standards set to take effect in the 2014-15 school year.

Jackrabbit starts stress the engine, transmission, and differential. Riding the brake pedal, or consistently stopping at the last instant, damages the brakes. Shifting from “Reverse” to a forward gear while the car is still moving backward can harm the transmission. And hitting potholes causes suspension and tire damage and ruins wheel alignment. Do as the race car drivers do, pretend there is a egg under the gas pedal and DO NOT break the egg, in other words be very smooth, you will be very surprised how much these tips will help your gas mileage and vehicle repairs will go down.

New principal joins oldest elementary school with enthusiasm By PIXIE SULSER Adventurous and enthusiastic seem to describe the newest principal at Ramona Unified School District’s oldest elementary school. Ramona Elementary Principal Daniel Paquette replaces Phyllis Munoz, who retired after nine years as the leader of the RE Mustangs. Paquette said he has always been interested in exploring new horizons. Earlier in his life he was a sky diver, a scuba diver and once even found himself a prisoner of the Contras in Central America. It seems that while traveling with a buddy during a college vacation, using an outdated AAA map, the two found themselves to be “the only non-local faces in the back of a Toyota pickup/taxi. When the Contras stopped us, we showed them our map and tried to explain what we were doing, but they didn’t quite believe us. They let the villagers go, but kept us for three days.

Each day they would move us to a new location. After being guarded, interrogated and searched, the Contras decided we were not a threat of any kind and finally called a consular officer to pick us up. It was quite an experience.” Before beginning his post secondary education, Paquette served four years in the U. S. Army, where he said he learned tolerance, organization, how to work with a variety of people, the importance of completing paperwork and a sense of discipline. “All skills” he noted, “that are extremely useful in education.” Paquette earned his bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State University where his emphasis in bilingual education really started out as something of a whim. “Just before completing my degree in liberal studies, I decided I wanted to study in Mexico during my last semester,” explained Paquette. “I had taken a bit of Spanish but was not at all proficient. I

just thought improving my language skills would be helpful.” He spent one year at La Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and then applied for a second. From there Paquette earned his bilingual crosscultural multiple subject teaching credential, began his teaching career at the elementary level in South Bay and eventually took his love of Spanish to the secondary level where he taught the language to high school students. Upon earning his master’s degree in educational leadership from San Diego State University, he was appointed principal of the American School in Mexico in Aguas Caliente. Subsequent moves found him returning to the high school Spanish department, then back into administration as dean of students at Vista High School and eventually assistant principal for Vista High where he supervised the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program which, Paquette ex-

plained, is a rigorous fouryear program for students who desire to earn an international high school diploma recognized by top level universities in approximately 140 countries. Paquette has been principal at Pioneer Elementary in Escondido and an elementary school in the Lake Elsinore School District. Both were in Program Improvement for not meeting student achievement goals when Paquette took over and both were out by the time he left. “Bringing two schools out of Program Improvement,” said Paquette, “really showed me that it’s not where you are in terms of programs, ... it’s about the improvement itself. It’s about knowing where you want to go from here, and about realizing that even the best schools in the world can improve.” Paquette’s most recent job found him back in the classroom which he sees as a real positive as he returns to the administrative arena.

BEATRIZ AND DANIEL PAQUETTE When Temescal Canyon High School asked him to lead the International Baccalaureate program at the middle school level to better prepare students for the rigors of the high school program, Paquette saw it as a win-win situation. He was able to return to the classroom while completing his doctorate and overseeing a program he believes is beneficial to students. In December 2012, Paquette completed his doctorate in educational technology at Pepperdine

University, marking his accomplishment with a personalized license plate that reads “pepperdoc,” a play on “Dr. Pepper” and an example of his selfdescribed “goofy sense of humor.” “I see my recent experience in the classroom as a real plus as I move back into a principal role,” said Paquette. “So often teachers feel that administrators have been out of the classroom for so long and don’t truly understand the dayto-day issues, but I was just there. I understand. I know what they are dealing with. This is a huge positive. I’m a teacher first. Yes, I’m the administrator, but I’m always a teacher first.” Outside of education, Paquette said he just enjoys life. He fills his off hours running, camping and spending time with his wife, Beatriz, a flight attendant for Delta Airlines; his youngest son, Nicholas, a sophomore in high school; and his oldest son, Adrian, who recently joined the Navy.

Guest Commentary

Start printing arrestees names again By ED ROBISON I moved from the Los Angeles area to Ramona 30 years ago to get my family away from the “criminal vermin” that had infested and destroyed that area over the prior 30 years. I commuted from Ramona back to my cop job in “Vermin City” for the next 12 years. On my days off I used to enjoy reading the Sentinel because the local news was so mellow and sometimes downright boring. It was a welcome relief from my job as a cop. These days, I dread even reading the Sentinel because it has become apparent that the “criminal vermin” has followed me here. It is obvious, by your weekly crime reporting, that our little “country town” has been overrun by thieves, drug addicts and out-of-control juveniles. Wake up, Ramona! Open your eyes and pay attention to what is going on in “your town.” Report anything and everything that you see or hear that just doesn’t seem right to you. Call the sheriff. (You don’t even have to give your name if you don’t want to.) They are the experts. Let them determine if your observations are founded. Don’t dismiss your gut feelings only to be kicking yourself in the butt later when you find out that you should have called but didn’t. Get involved with your schools, your Sheriff’s Department, your Neighborhood Watch. Know where your kids are and who they run with. I was very happy to see that the Sentinel was printing the names of the lawbreakers in “our town.” It was a great service to the community to let us law-abiding citizens know who these people are so we could “keep our eyes on them” when we saw them out and about in “our town.” I, for one, benefited from this practice when I saw the name of a person who had been arrested, and convicted, of a serious felony that had frequented my home. Needless to say, I no longer allow that person on my property. It saddens me to see that the Sentinel has stopped this practice. Why did the Sentinel stop the practice of naming the Ramona arrestees? These names are public record. Did someone raise hell and threaten a lawsuit because one of their family members got arrested and they were embarrassed? Ramona Sentinel, start printing these names again! In addition to reporting what crime occurred, tell us who did it. I suspect that the State of California’s brilliant decision to order the early release of thousands of low-life criminals into our community has had a direct bearing on our local “vermin invasion.” I would like to see an investigation by the Ramona Sentinel that compares our statistical criminal activity to the “before and after” release of these criminals. Ed Robison is a Ramona resident. Editor’s Note: Thank you, Mr. Robison, for your comments. We are giving your suggestions serious consideration.

Sentinel Reader Opinion Epic All Class Reunion at Back of the Ranch

The Ramona High School Class of ‘83 would like to thank Ernie and Sherri of Back of the Ranch for hosting the RHS All Class Reunion. Everyone had a wonderful time. It was great to connect with all the graduates of RHS. Also we’d like to thank the neighbors and neighborhood around “Back of the Ranch” for being so tolerant of all the Bulldogs that were gathered and lastly thank you, Ramona Sentinel, for always being the hometown newspaper that everyone looks to, to find out what’s happening in the community and help us get the word

out. “Go Bulldogs.” On a personal note I would like to thank the others responsible for putting on this epic reunion — Barbie Meador, Dawn Dillon, Debbie Swan and Stefan Steiner — thanks for all the wonderful work and dedication and help putting on this event. Thomas Levin Ramona

have a minimum amount of shrubs/ground cover around my house, not only for fire protection but for aesthetics. With my sprinklers set at the absolute minimum and my property looking much like the Sahara, I received my latest bill for $207. I know many will have little sympathy for me because their bills are much higher. What is frustrating is that as with most bureaucrats they believe that by increasing rates they will increase revenue. All that is accomplished is that people use less water, revenues decrease, and fire danger increases. So for now my sprinklers are off and I hope for a good rainy season. David Hamblin Ramona

Recycling on Earth bought my pig Bubba

Hello, my name is Miles Miller and I am president of the Ramona Stars 4-H Club. I would like to thank Recycling on Earth for purchasing my pig Bubba at the Ramona Junior Fair Livestock Auction that was held on Aug. 3 at the Ramona Junior Fairgrounds. Four-H’ers put a lot of time and effort into raising an animal to take to the fair. The Ramona Stars and I are very thankful for all the support Recycling on Earth has given to the fair and the exhibitors. Thank you, Recycling on Earth and all other local business that support the community fair. Miles Miller Ramona

es turning two of the four Ramona Adult Softball fields at Ramona Community Park into soccer fields. Funds requested: $150,000. Adult Softball President Jacob Zoria told the Sentinel that his group has only been using two fields and is not opposed to the plan, which is in the process of being finalized. “We just want it done the right way,” he said. Cindy Galloway with Ramona Parks and Recreation Association, which leases the land to the sports groups, said RPRA supports the plan. 3. Skateboard park Champion: Nancy Roy This project will focus on the development of a world-class skateboard park behind Ramona Library. Those involved with the proposed Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus (RICC) at that site support the skatepark, Roy reported. Funds requested for initial planning/design: $90,000. 4. Girls Softball LED scoreboards Champion: Jeff Moody This project will focus on the purchase and installation of electric LED score boards on five fields. Funds requested: $40,000. 5. Girls & Boys Club tennis court conversion to basketball court Champion: Simone McCune The project would take one of two tennis courts at Collier Park and convert it to

a basketball court, available to the public when not in basketball league use. Funds requested: $70,620. 6. RHS Baseball/Softball fencing and dugouts Champion: Dean Welch The project includes demolition of current dugouts, relocating them at a safer distance, building snack bars, team rooms, and connecting backstops. Plans have been completed by the RUSD architect, Welch said. Funds requested: $100,000. 7. Ramona Community Athletic Complex, Central Support Facility — Phase 1 (retitled from Ramona High School Recreational Improvement Phase 1) Champion: Steve Powell Powell gave a slide presentation to the Parks and Rec subcommittee, showing how two new buildings could fit into the RHS campus and detailing the various functions they would include for community use. Funds requested: $250,000. Although the amount of funds requested total $80,000 more than available, Parks and Rec Subcommittee member Dawn Perfect said the possibility exists that not all projects will be built or funds spent in one year. “The projects usually get built on who’s ready,” she said. Because all planning group votes are advisory to the county, the list needs the approval of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

County workers and Utility Tree Service tend to the eucalyptus trees on Montecito Road near Main Street. In front is the stump of the tree at the corner that was cut down because it had died, said Andrew Holt with the county’s Department of Public Works. The 80- to 100-foot tree was removed “for the safety of the public,” he said. Utility Tree Service, contracted by the county, has been trimming the other eucalyptus trees lining Montecito Road.

Congregational Children’s Center selects new director By JESSICA KING A familiar face took charge of the Congregational Children’s Center of Ramona this month. Teacher Mindy Tretera has replaced Patty Mussen, who retired Aug. 1 after 20 years as the center’s director. Like Tretera, Mussen taught at the preschool and daycare center before becoming its director. Experience in the classroom is key, said Mussen, noting the director needs to be ready

to substitute on a moment’s notice while also handling the center’s day-to-day operational needs. Those needs include ensuring school records are kept, state licensing requirements are up to date and the facilities are up to par, among other things. The director also reports directly to the center’s board, which chose to hire Tretera as Mussen’s replacement following an extensive search. The center received about a dozen applications, said

Standing in front of goodbye messages from the preschoolers, longtime Congregational Children’s Center Director Patty Mussen, left, hands the reigns to Mindy Tretera this month.

Mussen. About half were screened further and invited to interview. “It was an opportunity and I felt I was up for the challenge,” said Tretera, who was the only staff member to apply. “I feel honored to be entrusted with the responsibility and I just hope I can do as good a job as Patty has.” Tretera has taught at the center for nearly 15 years and considers herself a Ramona native, though her father was in the military and her family had to move around some. Tretera is now raising her own three young children in town. “She brings energy and years of teaching experience to the job,” said Mussen of her replacement. “She’s young and has more energy than I do at this point. I think the center is lucky to have her and she’ll do a fine job.” Should Tretera run into trouble on the job, she won’t have to look far for an expert’s advice. Mussen said she plans to continue living in Ramona and attending the First Congregational Church that runs the center. Though Christian lessons are taught

at the center, it is open to all children ages 18 months to 12 years regardless of their religious affiliations. The job hasn’t changed much since Mussen accepted it in 1993. “Technology is different and the world is a little less safe, so there are more safety

issues than before, but other than that it’s basically the same,” she said. “The children are as much a blessing as always and they’re really what the job is all about.” Mussen, who also previously worked as a teacher’s aide at Hanson Elementary and at the computer lab at

Ramona High School, said it has been neat watching people who grew up alongside her children come to the center with theirs. Mussen hopes to spend her retirement finishing projects around her home, volunteering more and maybe even traveling a bit.

I love summer. I know, it’s too hot in Ramona, but to me summer means farm stands and winery visits. Being the husband of a personal chef allows me to make many of these visits. I recently tagged along with my wife on her food adventures. Our first stop was down the road at La Finquita Winery on Vista Ramona Road. Owners Mario and Diana Bergeron were hosting a wine pairing. Guests were treated to five wine and food combinations including a Cabernet Sauvignon paired with a spicy creole shrimp and spinach salad, and a Petite Syrah paired with caprese skewers. Then it was off to the farm stands. We are truly blessed to have so many great options to buy locally grown fresh produce. For this trip we started at Connelly Farms on Telford Road. Owner Neil Connelly always has a great variety of fruits and vegtables on hand. Then it was on to Connelly Gardens on Stef-

fy Lane. Connelly Gardens is owned by Neil’s brother, Tim, who on this day had a nice selection of tomatoes, squash, melons, onions and more. On our normal Saturday run, we would also stop by San Diego Organic Farm on Hanson Lane, Killer Tomatoes on Pamo Road and Grebar Farms on Pile Street. There is also the farmers market that’s held in the Kmart shopping center. After our mini vegetable tour, we headed out of Connelly Garden’s gate and drove straight across the street to Lenora Winery. We were greeted by owner Eric Metz and treated to tastes of several of his wines including a 2008 Cabernet Sauvigon,

a 2008 Grenache and a 2007 Petite Syrah Angelica, a wonderful dessert wine that tasted great with a few pieces of chocolate. Our last stop of the day was at Turtle Rock Ridge Winery on Woods Hill Lane. Owners Ian Vaux and Laurie Wagner were there to greet us with their usual smiles and talked about their chilled wine tasting flight that includes a Chardonnay, a Viognier, a Rhone Region Grenache, Sangria, and a chilled glass of their delightful Chocolate Turtle Dessert Wine. There is also a sixth taste that you can pick yourself. “You’ll be able to revisit one of the previous wines, or select a wine off the other list. It’s your choice to make” said Laurie. So for those hot summer days and nights, stop by and have a chilled glass with Ian and Laurie, and make sure you stop by and support our farm stands. Numerous rebate programs are available for those looking to conserve water, Ramona Municipal Water District reports. Rebates are available in residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and agricultural categories, RMWD Water Resource Specialist Patty Bevers told district directors. Most recently, rebates became available for residential high efficiency toilets, she said, noting that to qualify all toilets in a residence would have to be replaced. The rebate is $50 per toilet. Rebates are also available for high efficiency clothes washing machines, controllers for automated irrigation and other water conservation efforts. Deputies arrest two in stolen car Two men, spotted by a sheriff’s deputy in a stolen vehicle near Main and 16th streets, were arrested Thursday evening after leading officers on a foot chase, said Sgt. Brent Strahm. Around 7 p.m., the deputy saw a two-door Honda coupe that had been reported stolen and when he pulled behind it, the two suspects fled from the car, the sheriff’s department reported. The driver, Antonio Waller, 37, of El Cajon, ran into Stater Bros. where he was apprehended, said Strahm. Around 8:20 p.m., the other suspect was spotted running to a residence in the 1600 block of 16th Street, the sergeant said. Deputies went to the residence, where they found Travis Blackmond, 24, of Ramona. Both Waller and Blackmond were arrested, suspected of the following charges: possession of stolen vehicle, other agency vehicle theft recovery, conspiracy to commit crime, obstruct/resist peace officer/medical technician, and felony bench warrant, according to the Sheriff’s report. The Honda was reported stolen in El Cajon on July 29, said Strahm.

Youth wrestlers medal at state games Ramona Wrestling Club, “The Pound,” took three wrestlers to the Annual California State Games Wrestling Championships and all three placed. The event was held last month at Mater Dei Catholic High School in Chula Vista. Tyler Badgett and Matthew Populin finished in first place, and Ryan Badgett took second place. The tournament featured 350 youth wrestlers, ranging from kindergarten to high school age. Wrestlers traveled from all over to compete in this annual event.

A soccer feud is afoot in Ramona, but it’s not among the players. It’s among parents who say they are looking out for the best interests of the soccer players. Youth recreational and competitive soccer were both under the nonprofit Ramona Soccer League (RSL). Early in 2012 the competitive teams became known as Ramona Futbol Club (RFC) but still operated under RSL. That changed on Nov. 26, 2012, when the RSL board voted to split RFC off into a separate entity, citing such reasons as animosity between the two groups and a board election that was full of irregularities, according to the meeting minutes. “This split has been brewing for years and years. It’s always been an issue between competitive and recreational,” said David Jordan, who was RSL president at that time and

now serves as RFC president. But, he added, “Both of the programs need the other to be healthy.” Splitting into two groups turned out to be not a simple task when dealing with the RSL funds and assets, especially when considering a difference in fees between competitive and recreational players and the purchase of equipment for the competitive teams within months before the vote to split, as well as the purchase of portable tower lights just after the vote. Those purchases totaled nearly $22,000. Although RFC is using the equipment and lights, who owns and is responsible for them continue to be a point of contention between the two groups. Both soccer groups have consulted with attorneys and have lobbied accusa-

tions. “We would just like to get the assets that are rightfully ours and paid for by parents over the years,” said RSL Vice President David Williams. He and Treasurer Dawn Perfect point to an agreement between the two organizations that says if RFC does not have nonprofit status by July 31, the equipment and lights should be returned to RSL, but the agreement was never signed by both parties. Jordan, who noted the agreement is non-binding, said RFC has applied for nonprofit status and is waiting for the federal government’s approval. RSL leases soccer fields and a snack bar at Ramona Community Park, also called Wellfield Park, from the Ramona Parks and

Recreation Association. Ramona Municipal Water District owns the property. RSL board members said the group had been saving money in its account for years to create more soccer fields. RFC leases fields at Ramona Unified School District school sites such as Hanson Elementary and Ramona Community School. Jordan said the portable lights are needed for the school fields. Perfect said RSL needs use of the lights, too. Perfect noted that over 500 youths are registered for the coming RSL season and that the league gives teenagers, ages 14 to 18, a chance to play without a required minimum grade point average as in school sports. Arriba Teen Center has much to offer

As mentioned in my column July 25, we need more and better recreational activities for not only the youth of Ramona but also for all of the citizens of Ramona. Just because there is a need doesn’t mean that nobody is trying to fulfill that need. I recently visited the Arriba Teen Center at 1710 Montecito Road, which is in a building that has also served as Ramona Community School and as the Ramona High School wrestling team’s practice facility. Come to think of it, where haven’t the wrestlers practiced? Arriba is a 501c3 which is a fancy way of saying that it is a nonprofit organization and one can donate to it and get a tax write-off or something good like that from Uncle Sam. I don’t make enough money to understand what

that means. When I donate money to any organization I usually get comments like, “I didn’t know that they minted pennies anymore.” Arriba is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Arriba is staffed by volunteers and is kept open by donations. The major donors are: Dr. Jane Tanaka, Palomar Pomerado Health, Ramona Unified School District, Creative Wisdom Foundation, Ramona Music Center, Soroptomist International of Ramona, Ramona Kiwanis, and Ramona Rotary. Stop by and see Kim Lasley if you want to donate money or anything that can benefit the teens. Lasley is the director, CEO, head cook and bottle washer, and she is the straw that stirs the drink. She leads a group of loyal

volunteers that include Nancy Roy, Liz Schaude, Laura Kitchen, and Joe and Katie Baima. The volunteers all have different talents that they pass on to the teens who frequent the center. Schaude is an art teacher, Kitchen tutors, and so on. In all honesty, the volunteers are just teens from other generations. They hang out and play games and try to blend in so that the teens don’t feel supervised or intimidated. Arriba has two pool tables on which the teens take turns beating the volunteers. There is a very large television set that has a DVD and is compatible with video games, along with foosball, ping-pong, computers, board games, comfortable couches, a snack machine and a drink machine that has prices that were popular in the 1980s. Besides just hanging out there are also planned activities. There are movie nights, concerts, volunteer disc jockeys, pizza nights, barbecues, tuna cook-

“We are growing and we hope to do more." — Arriba Director Kim Lasley outs, dances, etc. Arriba teens have painted and designed their own murals. Several teens in the Ramona High Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and the wrestling team have volunteered to clean up and do weed abatement. The RHS NJROTC has a computer room where it practices for its Cyber Patriot Team competitions. There are plans for the future. “We are making every effort to make a skateboard park a reality. There are signs all over that say NO SKATEBOARDS!” said Lasley. “We are working to have a place where there will be a sign that says, SKATEBOARDS WELCOME!” said Joe Baima. “We hope to be making an important announcement in a couple of months,” Lasley said. Himalayan Mine do-

nated gems and the teens learned to cut and polish gems and make jewelry. Two hundred pounds of tuna was donated in May and a barbecue and cook-out was held. Arriba turned into a haunted house in late October. “Our busiest time of the year is when school is in session. We take off a few weeks in May and June. For some reason the summer is slower. I have noticed that one doesn’t

phia Mittman, 13, Daisy Vazquez, 12, and Grady Vazquez, 15, competed in the invitational exhibition, which attracted 62 teen athletes from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The athletes earned an invitation on the basis of their performances in CrossFit Kids Gauntlet events.

see many teens in Ramona during the summer. I don’t know where they go or where they are but you don’t see as many as you do during school time,” said Lasley. “We just celebrated our fourth anniversary. We are growing and we hope to do more. There are so many great teens in Ramona and we have a lot of fun here at Arriba,” Lasley added. The volunteers, donors and sponsors who have kept Arriba Teen Center going have done a great service to the community of Ramona. From page 17

Of special note, Mittman, one of the youngest competitors in the junior varsity division, made it to the podium with a thirdplace finish, and Grady Vazquez, the youngest male in the varsity division, hit a personal best 255-pound clean. Emma Sedach, 12, also earned an invitation but was unable to make the trip to Carson.

Free four-day basketball camp culminates in alumni game By BILL TAMBURRINO Ramona High School’s girls basketball program performed a community service when coaches and varsity players held a minicamp and drop-in league in the school gym. Participation in the fourday camp was free. And the girls even hosted a barbecue on the final night of the camp. The camp was from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday with a threegame finale on Thursday night. “We had emphasized fundamentals and teamwork,” said Coach Dan Marshall. “We had campers that ranged from ages

him/her. The older campers were great and not only improved their games but helped with the younger campers.” It also was great for the varsity players, Marshall said. “Research shows that teaching helps the learning process,” he said. “Our players did a great job of teaching the fundamentals and coaching the daily games.” The first of the three games the RHS girls basketball program hosted on Thursday evening was for the campers. It gave their parents a chance to see what they had learned. The second game was for the RHS girls basketball

teams. The final game was a girls basketball alumni game. Joe Bess coached the girls who had played for him and/or Larry Bringham, and Mary Schoepp coached the girls who have played during Marshall’s and Erin O’Connor’s tenure. The alumni covered two generations. The key matchup in the alumni game was former Miss Ramona Kayla Lawler, who guarded her mother, Kelly Lawler (Webb in her playing days). Both post players scored in the paint, collected several rebounds and were called for fouls against each other by referee Jim Root. Several pictures from the

alumni game are posted on the various social networks with comments. The campers and alumni ranged from 8 to not quite 80, and they all said they had fun thanks to the Lady Bulldog Basket-

ball program. In addition to Marshall, morning camp coaches included Bess, Ken Sheib, Kellie Schoepp (Mary’s daughter) and players on the varsity girls team.

ers have the ability to work off registration fees. “It’s very successful,” she said of the RSL program. RFC parents said a higher level of competitive play and coaching that will provide more opportunities for players to be noticed by college coaches were reasons behind the formation of Ramona Futbol Club, which partners with the Arsenal FC program.

Jordan said his daughter, as well as other Ramona youths, participated in leagues “down the hill” to find more competitive play before RFC was formed. The new club is attracting players from other communities, including Escondido, Poway and Rancho Bernardo, he said. RFC and RSL each offer recreational and competitive programs.

Soccer sign-ups still open for RFC recreational program There is still time to register for Ramona Futbol Club’s Gunners and Junior Gunners Recreational Soccer League. Those interested can bring their registration forms and stop by the field at Ramona Community School, 1010 Ramona St., Tuesdays and Thursdays,

from 5 to 8 p.m. RFC’s recreational program will keep with the trend of European Youth Soccer, where the youths play small sided games to learn how to develop their fundamental foot skills and game strategy. Ramona FC is geared toward teaching the player how to grow in

the sport to the best of their abilities, and to continue to grow to be able to transition to play at a competitive level. High school age players will work on skill, strategy, stamina, and strength in the game to help as they enter into the high school soccer program, to college,

and beyond if they wish. The cost to register is $85, which will include Tuesday skill clinics by professional coaches, Thursday team training, Saturday games, a team shirt, and a 12-game season. Checks should be made payable to RFC, or sign up online at www.RamonaFC.com.

Since 1989 the friendly people at Richardson Recycling have enjoyed serving Ramona as a state certified redemption center, buying back all containers with the “CA CASH REFUND” on the label. As a metal scrap yard, they also buy iron and the non ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, stainless, lead and such items as auto radiators, rims, batteries and bumpers. We even buy white goods (appliance like water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers). For a $10 fee, your old appliance will be picked up from your driveway.
