By Ashley Mackin and Pat Sherman espite challenges to board election processes and parade names, and the closing of Jonathan’s Market and Burns Drugs store, 2014 was largely a year of forward motion for La Jolla. Consider the unveiling of plans for a dine-in cinema complex, La Jolla Music Society’s announcement of a 500-seat performing arts center, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego selecting an architect for its expansion, and the nearly complete transformation of the commercial ghost town that was once Jack’s restaurant complex into the resplendent La Plaza shopping enclave. San Diego City Councilmember Sherri Lightner to preserve shared beach access at Children’s Pool during the seals’ winter pupping season, the City Council voted 6-3 to prohibit human access to the beach during pupping season (Dec. 15-May 15). The closure began in December, followed by a vigil for what the beach-access advocates dubbed “The Death of Children’s Pool.”
January 2014 n The Gate, La Jolla Cove: In response to pressure from residents and business owners, the city installed a gate in the fence above La Jolla Cove to make it easier for people to walk onto the bluffs. La Jollans urged city officials to re-establish human access to the cliffs as a deterrent to sea lions and cormorants gathering there and defecating on the rocks — the perceived cause of a once-unbearable (albeit gradually returning) odor permeating the Village. n Party house or tax boost? An ad hoc committee of the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) began meeting to discuss the perceived problem of shortterm vacation rentals, with the LJCPA ultimately voting later in the year to recommend city officials strengthen existing regulations on the industry. n Best-laid plans: During its yearly strategic planning meeting, La Jolla Village Merchants Association said it would scaleback and redesign its floundering Haute La Jolla Nights music and shopping events, planning to hold them on a quarterly basis (beginning with a “pet parade”). Its board also announced plans to hold the group’s first fundraising golf tourney and produce a fundraising “La Jolla-opoly” board game — none of which have yet come to pass.
sort mail (on Silver Street at Draper Avenue) will be sold (its lease is up in mid-2015). Meanwhile La Jolla Historical Society’s Save Our La Jolla Post Office Task Force celebrated its second anniversary since forming to prevent the sale of La Jolla’s now historic Wall Street post office, and relocation of its services. The sale is still on hold. n Marching orders: La Jolla High School Musical Director Michael Fielder announced the establishment of a P.E. Marching Band and String Orchestra class, giving La Jolla High a marching band presence in the La Jolla Christmas Parade for the first time in five decades.
February 2014 n Council supports beach closure: Despite an impassioned plea by District 1
n Fresh leadership: La Jolla High’s new principal, Dr. Chuck Podhorsky, takes the reigns. “My dad always taught me that the day you stop learning is the day you stop living,” Podhorsky told the Light. “You want to continue to push yourself … and I hope I model that through my leadership.”
March 2014 n Stage set for planners’ election challenge: Members of the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) elected seven board trustees during the group’s annual election, including returning trustees Joe LaCava and Jim Fitzgerald, each elected by a two-thirds supermajority to serve another three-year
term (in excess of term limits). LJCPA trustee Mike Costello claimed the LJCPA board did not do enough to solicit new candidates, which he said led to a shortage allowing two termed-out trustees to run for third terms. Fitzgerald later stepped down. In December, write-in candidate and architect Michael Morton, who received the fewest votes, would sue the City of San Diego over what he claimed to be the LJCPA’s improper handling of the election. n Of vines and vagrants: Responding to community concerns about a homeless population camping on the pedestrian bridge over Torrey Pines Road in La Jolla Shores, San Diego Police and city workers moved in and addressed the problem of cloaking vines. During a meeting of the Jolla Shores Association, residents said homeless people panhandled, slept and defecated in the area shadowed by brush and vines growing on the fenced-over bridge, which children use to walk to a nearby school.
April 2014 n Trail enhancement: The group “Friends of Coast Walk” announced a push to help preserve, restore and enhance a portion of the Coast Walk Trail, from Coast Walk to Cave Street. The group’s goals are to protect the environmentally sensitive bluffs, improve trail safety and appearance, and create an ongoing maintenance plan for vegetation there. Their wish list also includes an improved safety barrier along the trail at its entrance, and a redesign of the stairs for emergency access only. They formed a

A gate in the fence at La Jolla Cove was installed so people can access the bluffs — an area populated by sea lions, which the city then announced were the main cause of the foul, Cove stench.
n Burning Bridges: La Jolla condo owners began a fight to have the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) move a trolley bridge over I-5 that would have passed within 120 feet of their complex — an alignment not shown to residents in early public meetings. In June, residents of Cape La Jolla Gardens ultimately prevailed, with SANDAG committing to shift the bridge away from their complex.

The group announced completion of Phase 1 in June, which includes stabilization of the most treacherous portion of the trail. n Athenaeum takes over ‘Murals of La Jolla’: The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library took over stewardship of the La Jolla Community Foundation’s Murals of La Jolla public art project throughout the Village. The LJCF board said it realized the program would best be served as part of a wellestablished art institution in La Jolla. n Bye-Bye Burns: One of La Jolla’s oldest independently-owned retail stores, Burns Drugs at 7824 Girard Ave., announced plans to close after 62 years in the Village. The space remains vacant, although the owner hopes to rent the ground floor as retail, while the top floor would be remodeled as two luxury apartments. n Wisteria unveiled: The La Jolla Historical Society’s completed renovation of its Wisteria Cottage, the 1904 Craftsmanstyle building that hosts its exhibits. The historic building was returned to the period of significance in which it was owned by Virginia Scripps (half-sister of La Jolla benefactress Ellen Browning Scripps), and remodeled by Irving Gill. n Bike-sharing busted: The city said it planned to add 14 bike-sharing corrals in La Jolla as part of a citywide program that has since faced numerous delays in implementation. La Jollans weren’t having it, however, adamantly claiming the stations

were an eyesore and would take up too much valuable sidewalk, park and street space. The city and company operating the program, DecoBike, eventually pulled the plug on bike-sharing in La Jolla.
donations, the event did proceed, however. Under the guidance of Marengo’s husband, La Jolla Village Merchants Association board president (and architectural firm co-owner) Claude-Anthony Marengo, the LJVMA voted to take over production of La Jolla’s fireworks moving forward.
May 2014 n Jonathan’s Market closes: La Jolla’s longtime gourmet grocers, Jonathan’s Market at 7611 Fay Ave., closed its doors, making way for development of the sevenscreen Boffo Cinema complex, which will include food and beverage service in theaters, and is currently under construction. The project is being developed by Mexico movie theater veteran Adolfo Fastlicht and business partner Carlos Wellman, both of La Jolla, who signed a 20-year lease on the space with Dallo Enterprises. “We’re going to give the Village back its movie theater,” said Fastlicht, referencing the 2002 closure of the Cove Theatre on Girard Avenue. n Meanwhile, across the street: La Jolla Music Society (LJMS) announced plans to build its own 500-seat concert hall and home office space at 7600 Fay Ave. (currently Shingle Lane). The $40 million, 31,000-squarefoot performing arts center is expected to open in October 2017, and include a 200seat cabaret and multipurpose room, offices, rehearsal space, courtyard and a restaurant. n Bioscience/tech hub: La Jolla High School parents announced they are seeking to build a roughly $10 million, 13,000-squarefoot bioscience and technology center on

Given the increasing importance placed on science, technology, engineering and math education, parents and teachers at the school want to assure students have an adequate, modern facility in which to excel in these crucial, competitive fields, organizers said. In October, the La Jolla Community Foundation opened a donor advised fund to raise $6 million for the planned state-of-theart center, which will be one of the first in the nation at a public high school. n Fireworks scare re-dux: La Jolla’s annually imperiled Fourth of July fireworks display at Scripps Park once again faced cancellation due to a lack of community support, said Deborah Marengo, co-founder and director of the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation, which produces the annual event. By hook, crook and generous
n First La Plaza tenant revealed: Whisknladle Hospitality, the team behind La Jolla’s Whisknladle restaurant and three Prepkitchen locations, announced they would open a third La Jolla eatery, Catania, in the new La Plaza La Jolla boutique shopping complex at the corner of Wall Street and Girard Avenue — making them the first La Plaza tenant to announce. Managers for La Plaza said the center will open in early February, though as of yet, no new tenants have confirmed participation.
June 2014 n Star-power: Former U.S. Secretary of State and potential 2016 presidential candidate, Hillary Rodham Clinton, stopped by Warwick’s Bookstore to sign copies of her new memoir, “Hard Choices.” A line of 1,100 people snaked down Girard Avenue waiting to meet the former first lady. n They’re No. 1: The La Jolla YMCA gymnastics team participated in the USA Gymnastics All National Championships June 21-22. 2 0 1 4 : LA JOLLA YEAR IN REVIEW
From Year in Review, A5 n Shhh!: Shaun Briley took the helm at La Jolla Library, taking over for longtime librarian Catherine Greene, who retired June 30. n Off-leash mornings: La Jollan Nancy Linck introduced a petition for limited, leash-free hours for dogs on a section of a La Jolla beach (that had yet to be determined). Insisting she was not interested in establishing a dog beach or all-hours dog park, she said she wanted community input as to amenable hours and locations.
July 2014 n Merchants for change: At its July 9 meeting, La Jolla Village Merchants Association voted to request of La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival organizers that the name of the annual December extravaganza be changed to something faith-neutral. n Planning board election woes: La Jolla Community Planning Association hosted a special election July 3, during which Cindy Greatrex and Mike Costello were elected to fill two vacant seats on the board. However, whether Costello would be seated depended on the results of a challenge to the organization’s March election, filed with the mayor’s office by Bob Whitney of the La Jolla Association and architect Michael Morton, who received the fewest votes in March, and when running again July 3. Bill Fulton, then the city’s Director of Planning, Neighborhoods and
Rain cancelled the 2014 Jewel Ball while crews were in the midst of setup, but cochairs Bassam and Cari Massaad, Susie and Edward Piegza, and Melinda Mahony still helped raise $881,045 for local groups. Economic Development, opined that new candidates have priority over candidates exceeding term limits. Nonetheless, LaCava was seated (and subsequently elected president) via a two-thirds majority required of candidates exceeding term limits. LJCPA denied the city’s recommendation that Morton be seated. n Torrey Pines Road improvements: Details of the approved first phase and proposed second phase of the Torrey Pines Road Corridor Project were presented to the community at the July 24 Traffic & Transportation meeting. Phase One includes installation of ADA-accessible curb ramps, repairing sidewalks, moving streetlamps that interfere with the pedestrian walkways and the construction of new sidewalks. The work is scheduled to begin in early 2015. n For the birds: Construction of the new Children’s Pool lifeguard tower had to be put
LA JOLLA LIGHT - december 25, 2014 - Page A7
on hold when a nesting seagull chick was discovered there at the end of harbor seal pupping season, May 15. The chick did not take flight until July 28, posing a more than two-month delay on construction, which eventually resumed Aug. 4.
n Planning board woes continue: In rejecting the city’s recommendation to seat architect Michael Morton, the La Jolla Community Planning Association is told it risks decertification as an advisory board to the city.
n Cluster force: The La Jolla Cluster Partnership — an agreement with San Diego Unified School District that gives La Jolla public schools the ability to make changes to curriculum and hiring, among other things — is approved by unanimity July 29.
n Seals win: Following the San Diego City Council’s vote earlier in the year, California Coastal Commission (CCC) voted Aug. 14 to close Children’s Pool entirely for five months during harbor seals pupping season, Dec. 15-May 15. The CCC called for the city to closely monitor effects and efficacy of the winter closure for five years, at the end of which time the permit for the closure must be renewed. CCC added a condition to its approval that the City of San Diego study the feasibility of cleaning the water and sand at Children’s Pool, possibly dredging the beach and/or opening up long-closed sluiceways in the adjacent barrier wall (from atop which people will still be able to view seals during pupping season).
August 2014 n Jewel Ball cancelled: For the first time in its 68-year history, La Jolla-based philanthropic group Las Patronas had to cancel its major fundraiser, the Jewel Ball, due to inclement weather. Nevertheless, donations for the event and an online auction raised $881,045 for local beneficiaries. n Embezzlement charges: Tara Moore, Former bookkeeper of Jack’s La Jolla restaurant-bar, was convicted Aug. 4 of grand theft and forgery charges. Moore was charged with embezzling several million dollars from the establishment and from her ex-mother-in-law, and for fraudulently collecting military spousal benefits. n Facility sold: The United States Postal Service facility on Silver Street sold for $6.8 million. The 10,143 square-foot property, which USPS has leased since it was built in 1975 to sort mail for 43 letter carriers, will be redeveloped into town homes.
n Parking meters revisited: La Jolla Village Merchants Association revived the idea of using on-street paid parking as a way to increase revenue. The topic was last addressed in 2008, when a survey reported 642 merchants opposed paid on-street parking and 73 favored it. Prompted by changes in technology and a possible change in attitude, the board voted 6-4 to explore this and other revenueincreasing options for the group.

n Ebola aid: Foundation for Women opened an account to collect donations to help fight Ebola in Liberia at City National Bank in La Jolla. Funds collected pay for enough bleach for a family to sanitize their hands and prevent the spread of the disease.
n New mural: The first mural installed in the “Murals of La Jolla” public art program under the auspice of the Athenaeum, Kelsey Brookes’ “One Pointed Attention,” was installed at 7835 Ivanhoe Ave. n Major Shores utility project: Bracing for planned work on Avenida de la Playa in the Shores, to replace the sewer and water mains that run down the middle of the street, Shores merchants scheduled meetings with city reps to see what middle ground could be found to minimize impacts on businesses, but still complete the work. The merchants requested nighttime construction.
September 2014 n New restrooms at park: Kellogg Park’s long-awaited North Comfort Station (restroom facility), with construction and fundraising efforts organized by La Jolla Shores resident Mary Coakley Munk, opened. The Friends of La Jolla Shores later hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to honor the family of the late John G. Watson, whose foundation provided much of the necessary capital. n Campus improvement: The Bishop’s School cut the ribbon on its new Ellen Browning Scripps Hall, which houses many student activities. n Pearl Street Trophy: In a handful of La Jolla High School Vikings football firsts,

‘One Pointed Attention’ by Kelsey Brookes was installed in August at 7835 Ivanhoe Ave. It joined 12 existing murals in the Murals of La Jolla public art project. La Jolla Country Day hosted its inaugural Alumni Night Aug. 29, playing the Vikings for the first time. Similarly, the Vikings also played Bishops’ football team for the first time, in a cross-street rivalry Sept. 5. n Superintendent steps in it: At the Sept. 4 meeting of La Jolla Community Planning Association, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten urged the LJCPA not to approve the required street closures for the La Jolla Christmas Parade unless the name was changed to something faith-neutral. She also said she would consider pulling all school participation unless the name was changed. Marten later backpedaled somewhat, following public outcry that she overstepped her authority. n Village cleanup: In an effort to raise funds to steam-clean La Jolla sidewalks, Warwick’s Bookstore owner Nancy Warwick announced the Sparkle & Shine campaign, through which participants may donate $400 toward a personalized banner that is displayed on key streets in La Jolla.
n Middle school leadership: Muirlands Middle School hired a new principal, Harlan Klein, who said he hopes to add new elective courses in science, technology, engineering and math for students in seventh and eighth grades.
October 2014 n Seniors on the go: La Jolla Community Center launched Senior Express to help transport seniors around the Village for errands. n Girard Avenue fatality: La Jolla resident and San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce executive Melissa Bonney Ratcliff was struck and killed while on Girard Avenue. The motorist involved was 91 years old; car failure was later ruled out as the cause of the collision. n Slow down: Spearheaded by residents on West Muirlands Drive, who voiced concerned with speeding motorists on their street, a traffic “choker” was installed there. n Consignment caper closure: Former jewelry shop owner Karl Winchell of Winchell’s Jewelry was arrested and charged with embezzlement after San Diego Police Department investigated his business
practices, which included claims he scammed customers of thousands of dollars in jewelry and cash. n 100 years: La Jolla Woman’s Club celebrated the centennial of its Irving Gill historical building Oct. 17 with an evening gala at the club on Cuvier Street. n Planning Board election woes continue: With the intention of finally resolving the La Jolla Community Planning Association challenge to its March election, the Mayor’s office tells the planners to create a 19th seat on the board for Michael Morton. n More parking minutes: La Jolla Traffic & Transportation advisory board OK’d an extension of parking limits on Girard Avenue, requesting parking on the 7700-7900 blocks of Girard be increased to 90 minutes. A petition circulated among businesses by Nancy Warwick showed nearly unanimous support. n Fallen tree: Just shy of the La Jolla Recreation Center’s centennial, a 100-yearold Stone Pine tree fell onto its roof and had to be removed. n New Cove restroom coming: The committee behind the La Jolla Cove Pavilion project garnered enough donations to produce schematic designs for the new restroom facility, thanks to: La Jolla Cove Swim Club, La Jolla Sunrise Rotary, La Jolla Kiwanis Club, La Jolla Rotary Club and La Jolla Bridge Club.

Frontline Cancer SCOTT M. LIPPMAN, M.D.
A ‘game-changer’ for prostate biopsies
P
rostate cancer is diagnosed more often in American men than any other form of the disease, with roughly 238,000 new cases each year. That works out to about one in six guys. In truth, prostate cancer is even more prevalent than these statistics indicate. By age 50, an estimated one-third of American males will have microscopic signs of prostate cancer; by age 65, one-half to twothirds. The progression is linear with age. By age 100, postmortem studies suggest virtually every man will have developed prostate cancer. In most cases, fortunately, the cancer is slow-growing and contained: tiny knots of abnormal but benign cells that never escape the prostate gland to pose a serious risk of health and life. But in some cases, prostate cancer can be fast growing and spread to other parts of the body with deadly effect. Almost 30,000 men die of prostate cancer in the United States each year. Early treatment dramatically reduces the consequences and mortality of prostate
cancer. There are a variety of effective therapies, but much rides upon early detection and diagnosis. For men of a certain age, 40-75, that means a regular prostate specific antigen (PSA) screening is recommended. It’s a simple blood test that measures PSA, a protein produced by the prostate. Elevated levels of PSA are usually associated with the presence of prostate cancer. However, the PSA test isn’t perfect or 100 percent conclusive. Sometimes, the next recommended step is a biopsy – the actual plucking of a tiny bit of tissue from the gland for more exacting lab analysis. Prostate biopsies are not casually conducted. They can be painful and involve complications, but most health experts, including the National Comprehensive Cancer Network panel for Early Detection of Prostate Cancer, believe that in appropriate situations, the benefits of a prostate biopsy far outweigh its risks. The chief benefit, of course, is confirmation of the presence and nature of
cancerous cells in the prostate. The prostate may be no bigger than a walnut, but finding abnormal cells within it can be akin to looking for a needle in a haystack — while wearing goggles. Traditionally, prostate biopsies are conducted using ultrasound to create a real-time, two-dimensional image of the gland that physicians employ as a guide to where to inject the needle and extract targeted tissue. But “with an ultrasound exam, we are typically unable to see the most suspicious areas of the prostate so we end up sampling different parts of the prostate that, statistically speaking, are more likely to have cancer,” said J. Kellogg Parsons, M.D., M.H.S., a urologic oncologist and associate professor in the Department of Urology at UC San Diego School of Medicine and the Moores Cancer Center. That can produce an inaccurate diagnosis. Physicians might not see suspect tissues. The biopsy needle might miss existing cancer cells and extract only healthy tissue, leaving doctors and patients to mistakenly assume there is no problematic disease. So Parsons, with Christopher Kane, M.D., chair of the Department of Urology; Karim Kader, M.D., Ph.D.; David Karow, M.D., Ph.D.; Anders Dale, Ph.D., co-director of the Multimodal Imaging Laboratory; and colleagues, has developed a new approach
at Moores Cancer Center to improve the precision of prostate biopsy. They have combined traditional ultrasound technology with a novel, more sensitive type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) called restriction spectrum imaging developed at Moores Cancer Center to create a much more revelatory three-dimensional map of the prostate. “Restriction spectrum MRI is a gamechanger,” said Parsons. “It allows us to target the biopsy needles exactly where we think the cancer is located. It’s more precise.” The Moores team is the first to conduct prostate biopsies this way in the region. Indeed, they plan to soon begin publishing a series of papers in scientific journals describing their work and results. To be sure, the MRI adds a step in the process, but it’s addition by subtraction: MRI-guided biopsies, when needed, are more accurate and reliable. They reduce both diagnostic uncertainty and the chance that an untapped cancer will continue to grow undetected and untreated until, perhaps, it’s too late. u — Scott M. Lippman, M.D., is director of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. His column on medical advances from the front lines of cancer research and care appears in the La Jolla Light the fourth Thursday of each month. You can reach Dr. Lippman at mcc-dir-lippman@ucsd.edu

By Pat Sherman Following its staff’s recommendation, on Dec. 18 the San Diego Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve permits for the Monarch Cottages Alzheimer’s and dementia care facility at 7630 Fay Ave. — the building formerly housing the Chopra Center and a cosmetic surgery center. Although many have praised the facility’s design, during its Dec. 4 meeting the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) city advisory group on land-use issues voted 11-4-1 that findings could not be made to approve the project due to its lack of retail space on the ground floor. Zone 3 of the La Jolla Planned District Ordinance (PDO) — or blueprint for design — calls for the front 50 percent of a building’s ground floor to be designated as retail. Much of the deliberation during the Planning Commission meeting centered on a “reasonable accommodation” exemption city staff granted to the project in October, which allows a deviation from the PDO retail requirement because the project will provide housing for disabled persons. The project is part of the city’s Sustainable Building

Expedite Program, which reduces the time it takes to review development permit requests. “This is an important need. It is a well-conceived concept and it sounds like it’s a very, very good operator, but what we’re talking about here is conformance to the land-development code,” LJCPA Board President Joe LaCava testified during the Planning Commission meeting. “The retail component was the primary driver of creating the La Jolla PDO in the first place.” The Planning Commission staff report noted that the addition of retail as required by the PDO would eliminate four units from the 26-room facility, though LaCava argued that this slight loss wouldn’t preclude reasonable use as a residential care facility. LaCava also countered the assertion that the building’s irregular configuration — which has contributed to its vacancy — would continue to make it a challenging space to rent for retail use. He said the addition of a seven-screen cinema

By Ashley Mackin As the city prepares to update its Land Development Code (which it does every few years to correct errors and reflect changes in policy) the guidelines for religious institutions within La Jolla Shores will again be addressed. Chair of the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) Joe LaCava presented a short history of previous updates at the Dec. 10 La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA) meeting, and discussed possible recommendations the board could make to reflect the needs of the community. The LJSA will vote on the language at its January meeting, before recommendations go to the City Planning Commission in February. LaCava offered three suggestions for how to regulate religious institutions and large assemblies: 1) Require a conditional-use permit for any religious institution or large assembly anywhere in the Shores; 2) Prohibit religious institutions or large assemblies in single-family zones and require a conditional-use permit in the other zones; 3) Default to city regulations, which prohibit religious institutions and large assemblies in single-family zones, permissible in other zones up to 300-attendee capacity, and require a conditional-use permit above that. This is the ninth update for the Code, and the second time guidelines for religious institutions are being included. Such guidelines were included in the seventh update, but the regulating language disappeared from the eighth update. Prior to the seventh update, LaCava said, “every other planned district in the City of
San Diego had some kind of regulation for religious institutions, but in La Jolla Shores, you could put a religious institution anywhere you wanted. You’d have to go through a coastal development permit, a site development permit review, but otherwise you could put one anywhere. The city said ‘that doesn’t seem right. You should have the same level of protection as every other part of the city.’ ” In the seventh update, the city introduced language into the Shores Planned District Ordinance — or blueprint for design — that had some regulation of religion institutions, but did not address large assemblies. “Essentially, they are the same thing, one just has a religious component, which the U.S. Constitution does not allow you to regulate,” LaCava said. In the eighth update, the religious regulation was nowhere to be found. “We’re not entirely sure how it disappeared, but the theory is when the city was doing the eighth update, they were running into problems and were accused of regulating religious institutions differently than large assemblies,” he said. Hoping to suggest language that addresses both, LJSA members discussed the three suggestions to find one appropriate for La Jolla Shores. Noting that 90-95 percent of the Shores lies within a single-family zone, LaCava said the middle ground was the option of prohibiting large assemblies “across the board” in single-family zones and requiring a conditional-use permit in the other zones. LaCava said the board has the option of amending the recommendation to prohibit large assemblies in single-family and multifamily zones, but allow them with a conditional-use permit in commercial zones and visitor zones. Although the board did not vote on the issue at its December meeting, LJSA member Janie Emerson said this amended option “fits the Shores best.” There are currently no regulations on large assemblies at the Shores, and the ninth Code update would not likely be enforceable until 2017, LaCava said.
www.lajollalight.com However, LJSA chair Tim Lucas said there are other “limiting factors” in the Shores that would deter an organization from taking advantage of the situation. “Even if a religious institution can go into a single-family zone right now, there are city regulations that govern things like parking based on the size of the assembly,” he said. “So it’s hard to just buy a house and put something up without having the (required) number of spaces for how big your intended assembly is. There are some protections in case someone tries to shoehorn something in — in an inappropriate location.” Projects already in the works, such as the oft-rejected Hillel Center for Jewish Life — proposed to serve Jewish students at UC San Diego at a center off La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Road — would not be affected by the regulations because they would not be retroactive. To prevent something like this from happening in the future, Emerson said, “There needs to be something (at the city level) that protects a community when the community moves an important action forward and that action is deleted through no effort of theirs or no desire of theirs,” she said. Lucas said the suggested regulations would be posted on LJSA’s website (ljsa.org) and public comments are welcome via e-mail or at the next meeting. “You don’t represent the community unless you get community input,” he said. u n La Jolla Shores Association next meets 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Building T-29, 8840 Biological Grade. From Alzheimer’s Facility, A13 complex under construction across the street and planned performing arts center next door on Fay would dramatically boost its market appeal. “It has been a tough sell, but they’re measuring against the recession,” LaCava said. “The revitalization plans that you heard for the block are underway … and once those are in place, you can bet retailers and restaurateurs will be flocking to that building to be able to use it.” LaCava said the conditional-use permit required for the project only stipulates that the building be used as a residential care facility. “They do not have to put any disabled people in this building once they get that permit in hand,” he said. However, City of San Diego Development Project Manager Laura Black noted that the facility would be regulated by the state, specifically for elderly persons with Alzheimer’s disease or other cognitive impairments. To eliminate any uncertainty, Monarch Cottages representative Matthew Peterson asked Black to insert language denoting this specific usage into the conditional-use permit. Planning Commissioner Theresa Quiroz expressed concern that elected planning group board members may not fully understand the city’s reasonable accommodation provision mandated by state and federal law — and said the city needs to help clarify the provision and educate board members. “The City of San Diego allows residential care facilities and then puts things into the
exemptions could occur if there were “some other statute that allowed it to be there. “We or somebody below or above us would have a chance to review each and every project individually,” he said.
A compromise in the works
John and Frank Haffner of ASL Monarch Living hope to convert this vacant building at 7630 Fay Ave. (former site of the Chopra Center) into a 26-unit residential care facility for people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other cognitive impairment. File code … that stops those residential care facilities from being built — and the requirement for retail is one of those issues,” Quiroz said, noting that a city analysis found that San Diego does not provide nearly enough housing to seniors with disabilities. “That is one of the major reasons why this part of the municipal code is in there,” Quiroz said. “This is an extraordinarily important issue for the City of San Diego. … It’s a very good project and as a city we are required to comply with federal law, and federal law says that we have to have fair housing. ... We need these projects to be put in now more than ever.” Commission Vice-Chair Stephen Haase
said he believes the city’s reasonable accommodation process is “objective” and is working well. Commissioner Susan Peerson said she liked the openness of Monarch Cottages’ proposed façade. “Though it’s not retail, it’s still getting at I think the intent of (the PDO), which is an active street frontage where you can see in and see people doing things.” Planning Commission Chair Tim Golba said he didn’t agree with members of the LJCPA or its PDO subcommittee that the project would be precedent setting, opening the door to other such retail exemptions in Zone 3. Like it or not, he said, other such
On the heels of the Planning Commission’s approval, a compromise is being proposed to satisfy the PDO retail requirement. Peterson said his clients, John and Frank Haffner of ASL Monarch Living, are eager to reach accord with the LJCPA, PDO committee and La Jolla Village Merchants Association and “activate” the frontage of Monarch Cottages to the community’s satisfaction. Peterson said his clients are working to design a 400-square-foot space by the sidewalk for a coffee cart or outdoor café that would be open to the public. To make way for the space, front walls and a planter would be removed to open up the area for tables, chairs and an awning and/or umbrellas. The LJCPA will consider the proposal during its next monthly meeting, 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5 at La Jolla Rec Center, 615 Prospect St. (Note the revised date.) Peterson said he would likely return to the PDO committee again, to present signage, colors and exterior building materials for the project. Responding to La Jolla Light via e-mail, LaCava said he felt the commissioners took the LJCPA’s concerns “to heart,” and expressed optimism in the proposed solution. He said, “If the community supports that refinement, it could provide the needed vibrancy during the day as well as possibly serving the new movie theaters and the future music (center) in the evening.” u

Let The Maids home-cleaning service help this holiday! By Marti Gacioch With all the added commotion the holidays bring, house cleaning can become a dreaded task that many people would rather avoid. Thanks to The Maids, a San Diego house-cleaning service, holiday plans can take center focus while professional cleaners attend to the home’s needs. “During the holidays, people have family and friends coming over and better things to do than clean,” said Erik Tello, Maids manager. “We offer a cleaning service that is thorough, convenient and as healthful as possible.” Each Maid’s team of four uniformed trained, licensed, bonded and insured cleaners has had two weeks of instruction with company products to learn how to clean efficiently. “They start cleaning left to right and top to bottom, and each team has a supervisor who checks the quality of their work,” Tello said. Four maids visit each home in a company car with all necessary cleaning products and equipment.
the door frames, windowsills and baseboards in the living room area and/or common areas. The vacuum maid clears cobwebs and sweeps and mops floors as needed. Maid service pricing is dependent on the size of the home and its original condition. Customers can select a cleaning schedule based on their home’s needs. “Monday through Friday, our team goes into a home as quickly as possible, so we don’t interrupt the customer’s day,” Tello said. “We service 165 clients on a regular basis, and are trusted with the security of their homes; we use a lock box.” Founded in 1997, The Maids has 14 employees. u

Francine Garton, owner and director of Royal Dance Academy and Royal Academy of Performing Arts, with student Mei Adachi Courtesy
Due to a high demand for more dance opportunities and additional performing arts programs, Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) has opened in Sorrento Valley with a state-of-the-art, 15,000-squarefoot facility. RAPA representatives said there is no place in San Diego quite like it, and you have to see this unique facility to truly understand how amazing it is. The new RAPA space has five extra-large studios with viewing windows. Studio No. 5 has retractable seating for more than 120 guests for in-house performances. There are also three music/voice studios with recording equipment and an acting studio with “oncamera” classes. RAPA also features a Pilates Reformer and Gyrontonic studio and offers yoga, life coaching, nutrition information, tutoring, physical therapy, a
dietician and injury prevention. The facility also contains a large waiting area with four large flat-screen TVs for viewing classes, a study room and tutor room with USB ports, a large changing area, juice/snack bar and a cute, little dance store. Everything is designed to strengthen the success of the dance programs so RAPA can bring the best-of-the-best dancers to San Diego. RAPA is now enrolling dancers of all ages and is offering special scholarship opportunities for boys. There is a $200 discount for children in the 3-4- and 4-5-year-old classes. trends & events D’Angelo Olson La Jolla Dentistry offering smiles for the holidays Dr. Joseph D’Angelo and Dr. Ashley Olson have helped numerous patients attain a smile that they are proud of and are excited to display. Every day, they are on a mission to help their patients improve their lives, eat more comfortably and smile more confidently. Together with their friendly, professional and passionate team, they have made a commitment to improve the lives of every patient they have the privilege of serving with the finest dentistry attainable. “As we celebrate this holiday season, we are reminded of the important and wonderful people that have touched our lives, not only in the past year, but those people that have shaped our lives, our families and our community over time,” D’Angelo said. “The season is a time for gift giving and sharing time with those we love. The new year brings closure to this wonderful time of year and also invites an exciting new beginning. Many of us take this time to make personal commitments, which usually involve eating healthier, losing weight, exercising more regularly, or another self-improvement ideal.” While those traditional self-improvement goals, when carried out, are of tremendous value and certainly make us feel better, D’Angelo and Olson ask those to consider the impact of a smile. “A refreshing New Year’s proposal would be the focus on sharing more joy, laughter, happiness, and of course, more smiles in the coming year. “Did you know that the simple act of sharing a smile with someone, whether a friend or stranger, has a remarkable and positive effect on yourself as well as the people you are with?” D’Angelo said. “In addition to the emotional and psychological benefits, research shows smiling is associated with reduced stress hormone levels (like cortisol, dopamine and adrenaline), increased health and mood-enhancing hormone levels (like endorphins) and lowered blood pressure. “We recommend making a commitment to sharing more smiles to the people you love and to complete strangers as a gift to them and a gift to yourself.” The doctors also make note that refusing to smile can be selling yourself short on all the positive impacts the action has. “If you are one of many people who refrain from smiling or are self-conscious when smiling due to concerns about the attractiveness of your teeth, remember this – you are depriving yourself and the people you care most about of the wonderful benefits associated with smiling,” D’Angelo said. “Make a commitment right now to fix the problem. It may only take a professional dental cleaning and whitening or it may be as simple as adult tooth alignment with Invisalign. These days, replacing missing teeth is simple and reliable with dental implants. Complete smile makeovers with porcelain veneers can also be a life changer.” “Whatever it is, make a promise to yourself to take action, start smiling more and become healthier, sexier and more successful in the process.” Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from the D’Angelo/Olson team.

Abandoned construction projects are eyesores in La Jolla
S
an Diego is still America’s Finest City, in my opinion, and I love living in La Jolla. I am becoming increasingly embarrassed, however, by the trash and clutter of our abandoned, partially-completed construction projects. It sure doesn’t add much to our community, does it? We all know that speculative residential real estate developers will walk away from a financially troubled project in a heartbeat. We must therefore protect ourselves from that inevitability. The issuance of a building permit should require that an amount of money sufficient to complete the project be placed in escrow before it can begin so that if someone chooses to walk away from a project, it can be completed for them by a courtappointed third party. Here are four examples of real estate eyesores that are all within two blocks of our Mount Soledad home. All four photographs were taken on Dec. 20, 2014. Each has persisted for years. I still believe that San Diego is truly America’s Finest City. Let’s help it look like a Finest City — our city government may need to step in and take action. Chris Day La Jolla

Reader shares thoughts on the Mt. Soledad veterans memorial Regarding the story, “Senate-approved bill would allow veterans’ group to buy Mt. Soledad cross land” in the Dec. 18 La Jolla Light: It seems to me the government is selling the cross to the memorial association in order to preserve the Christian cross. Isn’t that showing partiality to one religion? Reasonable people would have put an American flag up there that honors all veterans, not just Christian veterans. You don’t have to be Christian to serve in the military. There is nothing American about the Christian cross, the symbol of how Jesus died. Who in their hearts wants non-Christians to not be honored by the centerpiece? How about overlaying a Star of David on the cross … and see how quickly someone will want it taken down. It’s unreasonable for the government to allow a war memorial that doesn’t memorialize all those who fought for this country. Sally Schmitz Submitted via LaJollaLight.com

Christmas Parade organizers express gratitude We are happy to report another wonderful Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival (Dec. 7) was enjoyed by the Village of La Jolla and its surrounding neighbors. The weather was ideal and spirits were bright. This was a record-breaking year for participation, with more than 100 entries and 3,500 participants, and more than 80 percent repeat entrants. We are grateful to our parade chairs, Bill Kellogg and Jack McGrory, for supporting the parade foundation and helping raise the funds to make the 57th annual tradition a reality — and our dedicated parade committee, without whom none of this would be possible. Thousands of people came out to enjoy a wonderful day, which started with the exciting antique aircraft flyover, and was filled with bands,
canines, equestrian units, beauty queens, schools, fire engines, floats, marching bands and VIPs. Our local La Jolla High School marching band joined us this year with great fanfare Our holiday festival at the Recreation Center extended the theme of education, including, not only music and entertainment, but also educational displays. Thanks to George and Pancho Dewhurst for donating many staff hours and equipment in trimming and lighting the tree at the Rec Center, featuring new holiday décor designed by Laura McDonald of Eloquence Design and hand-crafted by Dave Irwin of Sunrise Rotary. Generous donations by Sunrise Rotary and Doug Fitzgerald’s Recreation Center board made this possible. In 2013, we raised more than $9,000
to support local schools, and we fully expect to exceed that number when this year’s expenses are met. As always, we rely upon and are very thankful to the residents and businesses that support the La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival Foundation and enable us to grow each year. Warm wishes for a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year! u La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival Foundation Ann Kerr Bache, CEO Charles Hartford, VP/Secretary Cindy Greatrex, Treasurer Pat Wells, Parade Administrator Mike Carlin, Parade Director Gail Forbes, Festival Coordinator

Holiday Sippers
Local pubs serve drinks to welcome winter By Ashley Mackin Shaken or stirred, muddled or mixed, holiday cocktails boasting “spirits of the season” are readily available in La Jolla. Here are a few to whet your whistle. Beaumont’s Eatery in Bird Rock At Beaumont’s, 5662 La Jolla Blvd., bar manager Gavin McManes takes seasonal cocktails seriously. His latest creation, “The Partridge in a Pear Tree,” uses seasonal ingredients and the opportunity to play on words. The cocktail is comprised of Grey Goose Pear vodka, agave and lemon juice, shaken up and topped with Champagne and a rosemary sprig for tree-like decoration. Already on the menu is a winterinspired cocktail made with walnuts. “Being fall and winter, there are a lot of bourbon- and whiskey-based cocktails,” McManes said. “So I have one where I toasted walnuts and cinnamon and infuse them into some Maker’s Mark Bourbon. With it and black walnut bitters, I make a walnut and cinnamon old-fashioned. It has a really nice wintery feel.”

Kline St. has some wintery beers on tap. “We try to get some special holiday beers from Halloween to New Year’s because most breweries come out with special beers that have a lot more winter spices in them — cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves — and tend to be darker beers. In the wintertime, people want to drink stouts and porters with chocolate and coffee flavors,” said Jenna Marquand, general manager at Public House. But fear not the darkness of the beers, Marquand says. Just because a beer has a dark hue, it might not be as strong as you think. “People get scared by the color because they don’t know the color of the beer is not always going to indicate how dark it will taste,” she said. “People say they like Stella Artois and we try to give them something new they might like. Some beers drink way lighter than
your average lager.” However, some will be stronger, so always check the Alcohol by Volume (ABV). Cusp Dining & Drinks Embracing the warm and snuggly side of cocktails, Cusp Dining & Drinks offers Hot Toddies and Irish Coffees. Their hot toddy is a mix of Buffalo Trace bourbon, honey lemon juice and hot water. Expertly spiced, the toddy is not only a heart-warming drink, but some people use it to chase away winter sniffles. Irish Coffees are sweetened and spiked with Bushmills whiskey. Cusp Dining & Drinks is located on the 11th floor of Hotel La Jolla at 7955 La Jolla Shores Drive. u n What is your favorite seasonal cocktail in La Jolla? Gunmen rob three local businesses
S
an Diego police report that two adult black, males robbed the La Jolla Village Lodge at gunpoint about 9:22 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16. They entered the business at 1141 Silverado St. both armed with guns and made a demand to the clerk. They were last seen leaving with an undisclosed loss, possibly in a light colored vehicle. In other incidents, robbery detectives Thursday, Dec. 18 investigated armed holdups carried out at two San Diego businesses, possibly by the same three men. The first robbery at The Wineding Shoe, a hair salon and lounge at 3603 Fourth Ave. in Hillcrest, occurred around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims. The second, at Los Dos Pedros taco shop at 723 Turquoise St. in La Jolla, was reported just over two hours later. In the first robbery, three black men armed with a gun and a knife robbed the business, then fled on foot with an
undisclosed amount of cash, Heims said in a statement. Two of the men wore dark blue jeans and black hoodies with the hood up and cinched over their heads to hide their faces, and the third wore a dark jacket, gray baseball cap, black bandana and dark blue jeans, the officer said. In the second robbery, three black men robbed the business and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, Heims said, adding that in this instance, two of the men were armed with handguns and all three wore dark pants and black hoodies with the hoods up and cinched over their faces. Two of the men also wore dark shoes and the third wore white shoes, he said. No one was hurt in either robbery. — City News Service
Thieves steal resident’s Christmas decorations In a real-life Grinch situation, holiday decorations were stolen from the front yard of a home on Soledad Mountain Road in La Jolla Dec. 12. The homeowner told La Jolla Light that she went to turn on the lights to the decorative Christmas tree and reindeer in
her front yard, no lights came on. When she went to investigate, she noticed the tree and reindeer were missing and the electric cables disconnected. The decorations went up Dec. 7. “I couldn’t believe someone would come to my front yard and take the decorations,” she said, adding she immediately filed a police report. — Ashley Mackin

By Linda Hutchison La Jolla’s dat Yeshurun (meaning “community of the upright” in Hebrew) is not ommunities an uncommon name for Jewish Fourth in a Series synagogues. Here in La Jolla, however, the Adat Yeshurun synagogue is unique, according to Rabbi Jeff Wohlgelernter. Its membership is one of great cultural and religious diversity. “Our congregation is eclectic, we have one of everybody,” Rabbi Wohlgelernter explained. In addition to including almost 1,000 adults and children from across San Diego, the synagogue attracts many out-of-town travelers.

By Ashley Mackin o brighten the holidays for seniors and those who are homebound, volunteers with the Shiny Brite program visit to decorate their Christmas trees. Shiny Brite helpers came to La Jolla recently to prepare a tree for the Riley family. “A lot of elderly people don’t put a tree up because they don’t want to inconvenience their children or grandchildren by asking for help, yet these are the people who have some of the best Christmas memories,” said Paul Silvera, owner of the design firm and store, Scout, at Liberty Station (Point Loma), which founded and implements the Shiny Brite program, now in its second year. Volunteers bring an artificial, pre-lit tree into a home and then retrieve boxes of ornaments from the basement, garage or attic to use on the tree — all free of charge. “These ornaments represent a lifetime of memories for people … their Christmases … the things their children made … the travels they’ve had. The items are a celebration of a life well-lived,” Silvera said. Bridget Riley Santos nominated her parents, Bob and Frances Riley, for the Shiny Brite program because her ailing mother — the family’s holiday enthusiast — has not been able to decorate for many years.

Paul Silvera and Aubrey Lair decorate the Riley’s tree with the family’s own ornaments. From Shiny Brite, B1
La Jolla Cultural Partners
“I think my mom was always the one who instigated pulling out the decorations and going to get the tree,” Riley said. But 10 years ago, her mother began losing her ability to “grasp words.” Although it took some time to diagnose, the family learned Frances has a rare condition called Primary Progressive Aphasia, which gradually diminishes one’s ability to speak, and leads to dementia. Frances has since lost her ability to walk, make major movements and care for herself. “It’s probably been nine or 10 years since they’ve had a tree,” Riley said, adding that every now and again, she and her children would decorate a short tree with popcorn threads, so it could be easily discarded after the holidays.
Bob Riley and Bridget Riley Santos with some family decorations Photos by Ashley Mackin This year, seeing the fully decorated tree again was a sight to behold for Riley and her father. She said many of the family decorations were collected on world travels and others were gifts from friends. Riley pointed out one given to her mother by a friend from China that represented the Hmong culture. Bob said he is partial to a chili pepper ornament brought back from a trip to Mexico. “Having not had this for so long,” Riley said, “I think it’s really great to have someone come in and do this for my parents.” u n To nominate someone for next year’s program (or become a decorating volunteer), contact Scout at (619) 225-9925 or info@scout-home.com or search SCOUT @ Quarters D on Facebook.

Crust styles abound at Regents Pizzeria By Kelley Carlson ocals don’t have to go far to find Chicago- and New York-style pizzas under the same roof. Regents Pizzeria presents the best of both worlds — along with craft beers — in its new, 4,100-square-foot space, just a few blocks from Westfield UTC shopping mall. “Our mission at Regents is rather simple in that it all harkens back to an underlying passion to transcend the traditional dining experience by delivering fresh, quality ingredients in an inviting atmosphere,” said Bill Vivian, who co-owns the restaurant with Tom Carson, Ananda Goldrath and general manager Cary Reutter. Indeed, it’s a casual environment, with a combination of communal and traditional seating. Guests in the main dining room can witness pizzas being hand-spun and placed in a stone deck oven in the semiopen kitchen, while those who venture out to the “beer garden” patio can catch the latest game on flat-screen TVs. Obviously, pizzas form the basis of Regents’ menu. The dough is a special recipe — a collaboration between the late owner Stephen Carson and the well-known Bread & Cie bakery in Hillcrest, and it’s formed into the distinctively different New York- and Chicago-style pizzas. Those who enjoy New York pizza’s thin, foldable crust will find topping combinations that satisfy vegetable and meat lovers alike.

Regents Pizzeria’s Rigatoni Chicken Pesto Find it at the bottom of the online version of this story at lajollalight.com or visit www.bit.ly/otmrestaurants The dining room is filled at Regents Pizzeria on a recent evening. There’s the aptly named Veggie Pizza, chock-full of portobello mushrooms, semidried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, grilled onions and zucchini; White Pizza, featuring a base of rosemary and garlic olive oil, topped with spinach, mozzarella and ricotta; and Hot Sopressata, blanketed with spicy Italian salami slices and sprinkled with oregano and parmesan. On the other end of the spectrum are the thick-crusted Chicago-style pies, which have lots of cheese and a layer of sauce on top. One example is the Popeye, stuffed with melted Parmesan, spinach, artichoke hearts and ricotta. Pizzas can be ordered whole or by the
slice, and any of them can be made vegetarian or vegan. Gluten-free will be coming in 2015, Vivian said. Regents’ wings go hand-in-hand with the pizzas, ranging from mild to insanely hot. The spiciest is the Scorpion Wings, at 2 million Scoville units — the restaurant won’t serve them unless a waiver is signed. A mere sampling of the sauce burns the mouth for minutes. Another appetizer with a kick is the Bacon Plate. The thick slices of marbled bacon — which are slow-baked for three hours — have a sweet-and-spicy rub and are served over shishito peppers. True or False? The candy cane debuted in 17th century Europe as straight, white sticks of sugar candy for decorating Christmas trees. True, although the second part of the tale has been deemed folklore: “In 1670, the choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany had sticks of candy bent into the shape of a shepherd’s crook and passed them out to children who attended the livingcreche Christmas ceremonies. This became a popular tradition, and eventually the practice of passing out the sugar canes at Christmas services spread throughout Europe.” Back to what we know for sure: The use of candy canes on Christmas trees made its way to America by the 1800s, however, they were still all white. The canes are represented this way on Christmas cards made before 1900, and it is not until the early 20th century that they appear with their familiar red stripes. u — wikipedia

services begin on Friday afternoon with a candlelighting, followed by a Kabbalat Shabbat service, which means “receiving the Sabbath.” Services held on Saturday, the Sabbath, are similar to those held during the week, but a bit longer. Additional services are held during Jewish holidays such as Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Adat Yeshurun was first organized in 1987 by observant Jews who had a clear vision for a community without an exact location, or rabbi, for that matter. They reached out to Rabbi Wohlgelernter, who was leaving Australia and planning to move to Jerusalem. He agreed to help run the synagogue for a year — and has remained ever since. For its first 14 years, the congregation met
in the La Jolla Village Professional Center, an office building at the corner of La Jolla Village Drive and Villa La Jolla Drive. Finally, they were able to purchase land belonging to UC San Diego on La Jolla Scenic Drive and build the current synagogue. The building was dedicated in August 2001. It consists of one large structure with a wing for classrooms and administrative offices. Just outside in the courtyard is a large Torrey Pine, carefully left in place. Inside, Rabbi Wohlgelernter offered a tour. The main room is modern, with high wood ceilings and partitions and bookcases, which can be moved for larger events such as weddings and Bar and Bat Mizvahs. “It’s great to hear what visitors have to say. They’re not used to such diversity. There is a lot of excitement and enthusiasm. It’s very alive,” he said. While appreciating this feedback, Rabbi Wohlgelernter emphasized that his role is to “focus on the synagogue and my members/ congregation, to represent and present Judaism as a community, having us all grow in observance of Judaism and the Jewish people.” Adat Yeshurun is an orthodox synagogue. Although not all its members are orthodox, many are now drawn to this branch of Judaism. “They are returning back to being observant, to leading a more observant life,” said Rabbi Wohlgelernter. “They wake up
and realize the importance of core belief, a different kind of life to live and transmit to their children. Otherwise, with just the philosophy, it remains nebulous. With a lifestyle, it is easier, something tangible.” At Adat Yeshurun, there is a strong emphasis on ongoing education and many of the daily services consist of reading and studying Jewish writings, including the Talmud (primary source of Jewish religious law) and the Torah (sometimes called the Jewish Bible, with the first five books of the Christian Bible and additional psalms and words of prophets). In addition to these, regular worship services take place daily in the early morning (Shacharis) and afternoon/evening (Mincha/Ma’ariv). Sabbath (Shabbat)

Adat Yeshurun was founded in 1987 by four local families who wanted to establish a center for in-depth Jewish education and spiritual growth. Rabbi Jeff Wohlgelernter has been here since the beginning, providing thousands of hours of classes every year. Photos by Milan Kovacevic ark (housing the Torah scrolls) are handcarved wood, created by Rabbi Wohlgelernter’s father, an artist. His father also created the stained glass eternal light above the ark. Rabbi Wohlgelernter was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up on Long Island. He attended high school and college in Baltimore, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Johns Hopkins University. He then went on to rabbinical college in Baltimore and Jerusalem. As Rabbi Wohlgelernter explained, there are no degrees in rabbinical studies. “We study Jewish law for the sake of studying,” he said. In Jerusalem, the rabbi met his wife, Shoshana (“Shoshie”), a teacher from Vermont. The couple remained in Israel for another three years and then moved to
Sydney, Australia for two years. They had planned to return to Jerusalem when they were invited to consider Adat Yeshurun in La Jolla. In addition to serving as the synagogue’s leader, Rabbi Wohlgelernter teaches at Jewish high schools in San Diego. His wife also teaches and is the youth director of the synagogue. They have seven children (four sons and three daughters), ages 14 to 31, and 10 grandchildren. So far, none of the children has expressed interest in becoming a rabbi, but the majority of the adults are educators. u n Up next in the La Jolla Faith Communities series: St. James By-the-Sea Episcopal Church

et’s all put on a pair of rose-colored glasses as the 2015 arrow points to positive trends for a healthier, happier lifestyle for all. Organic farms are sprouting like wild mushrooms, environmental kindred spirits are joining hands to push government into implementing toxic-free food policies, and grassroots consumer groups are advocating for a sustainable future. Here’s my contribution to help put you and your family on a path to wellness (and moderation) in the coming year and always.

The dirty baker’s dozen: Fresh fruits and vegetables have a load of antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and healing properties. But beware, 13 or so crops are exceptionally heavily sprayed with toxic pesticides that can be particularly harmful to children. Best to buy organic with these notorious offenders, so look for the “9” on the sticker — the symbol for organically grown produce — before tossing them in your shopping cart, along with products made or extracted from this dirty baker’s dozen: 1) Apples, including applesauce, apple juice and cider 2) Strawberries, whether fresh or frozen, along with jams and preserves 3) Grapes, grape juice, raisins and wine 4) Celery 5) Peaches, and watch out for juice and preserves 6) Spinach, including canned, fresh or frozen 7) Bell peppers, whether green, red, yellow or orange (also avoid pimentos in olives, unless organic) 8) Nectarines 9) Cucumbers, and don’t forget pickles 10) Tomatoes, whether fresh, canned, in sauces, soups and ketchup 11) Snap peas, fresh and frozen 12) Potatoes 13) Blueberries, best not only organic, but wild The Clean 15: Here are conventionally grown crops with relatively low pesticide loads, mostly because of protective rinds. (Cook’s tip: Wash these thoroughly in a
cold bath of Castile soap and rinse well.) 1) Avocadoes 2) Onions 3) Pineapples 4) Asparagus 5) Sweet peas (preferably frozen) 6) Watermelon 7) Cabbage 8) Mangoes 9) Papayas 10) Kiwi 11) Cauliflower 12) Grapefruit 13) Cantaloupe (U.S. farms) 14) Eggplant 15) Sweet potatoes The cave dweller’s dilemma: When Dr. Atkins meets Fred Flintstone, we have the Paleo diet, which hopefully will peter out soon. Make this year one of balance and moderation, since an overload of land animal protein will clobber the liver. Go gluten: Gluten, the protein found in certain grains and their hybrids (including wheat, rye and barley) is the enemy for those suffering from Celiac Disease, now tallied at 1 in 133 or 3 million in this country. For others suffering from gluten sensitivities, while there is no health risk to consuming the protein, they avoid the nasty discomforts by removing gluten from their diets. For the rest of us going glutenfree, the diet has a fad component (unless you need to lose weight), and if you don’t have to cut out the pastas, breads, pizzas, even oatmeal and other delicious and fiberrich gluten foods, then why cheat yourself? Intelligent Indulgence: You can indulge when the craving strikes, just control the frequency, size and the quality of the treat. If you have a sweet tooth, whip up some wholesome homemade goodies with organic flour, honey or sucanat, bittersweet chocolate, dried fruits and nuts, especially heart-healthy walnuts, almonds and pecans, oats and seeds, such as, sesame, pumpkin and flax. u — For additional wellness recipes, e-mail kitchenshrink@san.rr.com

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 4777869 or visit this Internet Web site W W W. S TOX P O S T I N G . C O M , using the file number assigned to this case 011635-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. FOR SALES INFORMATION: (844) 477-7869 CLEAR RECON CORP. News Drivers express skepticism over emerging vehicle technology Vehicle vocabulary such as GPS, airbags, and anti-lock brakes often ring familiar to most drivers across the United States. But words like electronic stability control, lane departure warnings, and rear-parking sensors can often garner a look of bewilderment, so a MetLife study suggests after concluding that Americans
remain deeply skeptical over emerging vehicle technologies. Of Americans who responded to the survey, nearly two-thirds said they did not entirely trust car technology, particularly with devices used in-cabin, due in part to the unnecessary reliance on GPS or in-car social networking. But while respondents doubted many of the creature comforts of today, chalking them up to mere distractions, nearly 85 percent remained faithfully reliant on tried-and-true technologies like seatbelts, airbags, and anti-lock brakes – safety systems proven to reduce the instances of car accidents. While many Americans remain technologically savvy, less than a third of those who were surveyed said they were still unsure about car technology, due in part to unfamiliarity, but also due to car technology’s
reputation of creating potentially unsafe driving conditions. And in a surprising twist, many Americans expressed confusion over base safety features including electronic stability control, a feature that helps drivers gain control over their vehicle in potentially unsafe driving conditions. Over 60 percent of respondents said they would choose a GPS device over electronic stability control due in part to the lack of knowledge surrounding useful – if not essential -- car technology needed today. Get to know your car technology Now you can be the expert on the lesscommonly discussed car technology that stands at the heart of increased driving safety. Electronic Stability Control Commonly referred to as ESC, electronic stability control should not be chalked up to a
creature comfort. Instead, ESC can be a life-saving device since it uses computer technology to detect slipping, skidding, and even hydroplaning, instantly engaging the brakes, so collision impacts – if they occur – are significantly reduced. Lane departure warning systems Driving while tired is unfortunately all too common, but technology like lane departure warning systems can help drivers avoid a car accident altogether as it will warn drivers when they drift into another lane unexpectedly, thereby reducing the chance of collision and personal injury. LA JOLLA HOMES Karen Hickman of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices La Jolla named Five Star real-estate agent … again
K
aren Hickman of the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties La Jolla office has again earned San Diego’s “Five Star Best” in customer satisfaction for 2014. The award is a response to the results of an independent survey that polls more than 30,000 recent homebuyers in the San Diego area on their experience during purchases. “There are few things in our business as important as client satisfaction, and being recognized as excelling in that area is an honor,” Hickman said. “In our industry, we help people find homes to build their dreams, and knowing that people trust me to help them along that path is one of the reasons I love my career so much.” In addition, Karen has ranked No. 2 for Most Homes Sold by an Individual Agent in the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties La Jolla office through the third quarter of 2014. “Karen’s knowledge of local real estate is matched only by her devotion to her clients,” said Nicki Marcellino, regional vice president at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties’ La Jolla
office. “In our business, you rise and fall based on how you treat the people you work for, and Karen’s rapport with her clients is definitely demonstrated by her recent Five Star Best award.” With more than 25 years in the local realestate industry, Hickman is known for her superior customer service and strategic marketing skills. A Certified Relocation Specialist as well as a Fine Homes Specialist, she centers her business on Karen Hickman providing outstanding customer service and is often overheard saying, “It’s my pleasure to serve you.” She is consistently ranked as a top producer and award-winner year after year in the No. 1 top-producing Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices office in the nation. — To reach Karen Hickman, call (858) 459-4300, e-mail karen@sellsthecoast.com or visit karenhickman.com
