BY STEVE DREYER Poway City Council members informally agreed Tuesday night that the time has come to increase their monthly salaries. Stressing that it’s been eight years since the stipends were raised, and that the action has nothing to do with an estimated $22 million in surplus municipal budget money, all five councilmembers got behind the idea of a 14.5 percent increase in their pay,

effective following the November elections. The mayor will receive a 40 percent salary premium for extra responsibilities. None of the five were comfortable about the prospect of higher pay, but justified their decisions by saying the 14.5 percent roughly represents Consumer Price Index increases since 2008 and will not be retroactive. By state law, councilmembers can

increase their pay by up to 5 percent annually. That has not happened in Poway. Each councilmember currently makes $1,167 per month while the mayor receives that plus an extra $300. Under the plan gaining support Tuesday night, councilmembers will receive $1,336 per month while the mayor will be paid $1,871 each month. The consensus was reached during a non-voting council workshop. A

formal vote will come later this month. Appointed Councilman Leonard announces November run BY STEVE DREYER Appointed City Councilman Barry Leonard will be running for a full four-year term in November, he announced Tuesday. “I have a strong desire to serve others,” Leonard said. “Serving on the City Council has given me an opportunity to better understand the needs of our city and assist in the planning of our city’s future. Years ago the city was fortunate to have the guidance of councilmembers who had a bright vision for our city. I would like to continue as a member of

the team responsible for the extension of that vision as we plan for the future of our great city.” Leonard, 60, is a retired technology executive and Green Valley resident. He was appointed one year ago to fill the remainder of Steve Vaus’s council term after Vaus was elected mayor in November 2014. Leonard was one of 20 candidates for the appointed seat. Informed of Leonard’s decision, Vaus replied “Barry has been a great addition to the council. He does his homework, asks thoughtful questions and spends a

tremendous amount of time out in the community. I’d be delighted to have him back for a full term.” Before being appointed, Leonard had served on the city’s Budget Advisory Committee and was a member of the Green Valley Civic Association. He also served as president of the Bridlewood Estates Homeowners Association. SAN DIEGO (CNS) — What was shaping up to be a brutal campaign among Democrats for a state Senate seat in San Diego came to an abrupt end Jan. 28 when incumbent Marty Block announced he will not run for re-election. Block, whose sprawling district includes Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch, made his announcement on the Senate floor, saying he State Sen. Marty Block will pursue other opportunities. His statement was confirmed by campaign manager Roberto Alcantar. The former San Diego State University professor was facing a challenge from

Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, who is being termed out of the Legislature’s lower chamber. Both candidates were building up lists of endorsements. On Tuesday, Block touted support he had received from numerous Democratic clubs around the his district. Atkins, meanwhile, said she’d gained backing from the California Nurses Association. On Saturday, she held a news conference to tout the support she was receiving from several women who held elective office. Artists in the region with experience in bronze work are being invited to submit their qualifications to the City of Poway for possible selection to create a memorial to Tony Gwynn. A “request for qualifications” form is available for downloading at www.califorentry.org The entry deadline is Feb. 22. Finalists selected for consideration will tour the Lake Poway site where the City Council wants to have a monument to Gwynn constructed. The longtime Poway resident was a San Diego Padres All-Star and member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He died in June 2014 following a battle with cancer. The city announcement notes the project will likely cost in the $100,000-to-$150,000 range. The City Council has said the monument should pay tribute to Gwynn’s contributions both on and off the field.

CORRECTIONS The Jan. 21 Poway Unified School Board story incorrectly stated that Poway School Employees Association members were unhappy with other bargaining units receiving higher pay raises from the board. PSEA President Lynette Turner spoke at the meeting, but not about the raises. She did say that her

group would be open to other forms of bargaining that have been used in the past. A Jan. 28 story about possible pay raises for the Poway City Council switched the amounts given each month to the mayor and four council members. We regret the errors.

Two RB women celebrate 100th birthdays Pauline Hoover and Mabel Sullivan are longtime residents

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Casa de las Campanas recently celebrated the birthdays of two residents who have passed the century mark. Pauline Hoover and Mabel Sullivan were honored during Casa’s monthly party to celebrate its residents’ birthdays and anniversaries. Hoover, who turned 100 on Jan. 2, is one of Casa’s original residents, having moved there almost 28 years ago, shortly after it opened. The Grandview, Washington, native said she learned about Casa through an advertisement in a publication for teachers. Casa de las Campanas was originally created as a retirement facility for those with careers in education. She was an elementary school teacher and principal who spent most of her career in Oakland. “I enjoyed the children very much,” she said, adding she often taught the same children for two years at a time, mostly in first and second grade. Hoover said she and her husband, Charles — who went by the nickname Ray — wanted to retire in a facility that provided life care, which is why they chose Casa in Rancho Bernardo. He was a general contractor.

The couple was married for 60 years, until Ray’s death in 2002. She said they met in Washington, but did not marry until after she moved to Oakland in 1940. She relocated to be near her parents, who moved there a few months earlier to help her newly widowed brother care for his son. Hoover said her hobbies over the years included reading, crafts and exercising. She still plays bridge. As for reaching this milestone, Hoover said, “I can’t say it feels much different than 99.” Regarding the key to her longevity, she said, “The only thing I can think of is that I never smoked and I don’t drink much alcohol. I wonder if that made a difference.” Sullivan, who turned 100 on Jan. 27, has lived in Rancho Bernardo for 42 years and at Casa since 2010. The Leon, Iowa, native said she moved to California after marrying her husband, Donald. Though they knew each other in high school and were friends for many years, their romance developed much later. She said they got married 10 days after he returned from serving in the Army during World War II. While friends prior to his going off to war — “in those days we did not date much,” she said — Donald did not propose until returning because, “My husband felt if anything happened to him, if he came back crippled, he did not want me (obligated).” They moved to Fullerton 70 years ago because of his job running a printing press

that created business forms. She was a bank secretary in Des Moines prior to their marriage and later was a secretary for the Anaheim school district. In their late 50s, they decided to retire. “(Rancho Bernardo) was a small town at the time ... but it changed,” she said. For several years after moving to RB she worked at the Joslyn Senior Center. Sullivan said she and her husband — who died 15 years ago — traveled a lot during their 54 years of marriage.

“They were not planned trips,” she said, explaining they just drove wherever they felt like going. “We especially liked Canada and went to the East Coast a couple times. We loved it and got to see anything (we wished).” Her hobbies included sewing, knitting and reading. As for turning 100, Sullivan said, “it’s just another day,” adding many people have asked her the key to a long life, but she doesn’t know the answer.

Poway’s past tied to water

he story of Poway has long been the story of water. Sometimes, as with the flood years of 1916 (“Rainmaker Hatfield”), 1926, 1980, and 1997-98 there has been too much of the stuff. More frequently, the problem has been too little water. Starting with Philip Crosthwaite, the first European settler, in 1859, increasing numbers of homesteaders moved to Poway, taking advantage of valleys lined with fertile soil, stream beds and a mild climate to establish farms and ranches. In the 1890s, the Poway Progress newspaper carried frequent reports about how the recent rains, or lack of same, had affected farmers and their orchards, field crops and animals. Some excerpts: June 28, 1894 — “Mr. Belcher has concluded that Poway is not the Paradise that measure up to hi ideals, and the present dry season has decided him on making a change.” February 29, 1896 — “The past week has been dry, warm and summer like, and there is much anxiety as to crop outcomes.” March 7, 1896 — “Nearly two and one half inches of rain have fallen this week up to Thursday morning and indications for more.

This insures pretty certainly good hay crops.” Most early farmers and ranchers dry-farmed their crops, relying solely on rain for irrigation. Shallow dug wells with hand pumps would provide water for household use but little for irrigation of crops and few methods other than horse-drawn water tanks to deliver water to thirsty plants. Gradually, improved pumping by windmills, and later electric pumps, could provide more water from deeper wells, enabling more effective irrigation techniques and the introduction of thirstier crops such as citrus, and then avocados. Still, Poway in the middle of the last century was being throttled by a lack of water. Prolonged drought meant a dwindling water supply for the town’s few hundred residents and the agricultural crops upon which many of them depended. More and deeper wells were increasingly inadequate for the still-rural town’s needs. In the fall of 1952, the Poway Chamber of Commerce formed a committee, chaired by David R. Shepardson, to investigate the possibilities of securing a reliable source of water for Poway. They contacted the San Diego County Water

Authority about annexation and commissioned an engineer study of building a dam on the Los Peñasquitos Creek (now called Poway Creek as it passes through the city). While the dam was never built, it did get help get the area annexed to SDCWA. The formation of Poway Municipal Water District was proposed and an election was set for January of 1953. The vote in favor of forming the district was 210 in favor and 32 opposed. Five members of the district board, elected without opposition, were Shepardson, David H. (Homer) Williams, Robert E. Tobiasson, Harry W. Frame and Harry W. Tassell. In February 1954, PMWD was annexed by SDCWA and the Metropolitan Water District,

meaning there would be access to municipal water. Total annexation cost was just over $100,000, the majority to be paid, without interest, over 30 years. Plans and specifications were prepared for a water system and a bond election was held in April for the issuance of $600,000 in bonds — greater than the assessed value of all properties in Poway at that time. It was a leap of faith. The vote was 188 to 11. With the system installed in an amazingly short eight months, PMWD, and thus Poway, was able to tap into the San Diego Aqueduct, which first came to San Diego County in 1947 and travels diagonally through the city from StoneRidge County Club to Garden Road. In the fall of 1954, pretty much the entire population of Poway turned out for a “Water Holiday” barbecue in a eucalyptus grove northeast of what is now the intersection of Pomerado and Twin Peaks roads — and still stands — the first of Poway’s massive water storage tanks. With the new source of water, Poway could grow and change in many ways. Avocado and citrus orchards were planted and horses and cattle were raised. At first the growth was slow. Individual families bought pieces of the old farms to build their homes. That changed in 1958, when new tract home developments, including Poway Valley Homes, along Pomerado Road, began to spring up throughout southern Poway. Within a year the population had doubled. Then it doubled again and again. By 1963 the population had mushroomed from fewer than 500 to more than 7,000. That, of course, was just the beginning of the Poway we know today. Community center tops Poway spending priorities BY STEVE DREYER Poway City Council members spent five hours on Jan. 28 compiling a list of possible ways the city might spend up to $22 million in unallocated budget reserves. Suggestions were offered by city staff, 17 members of the public and from councilmemembers themselves. When the presentations were completed the five councilmembers filled out “ballots” that assigned points to their preferred projects. To no one’s surprise, the long-planned Mickey Cafagna Community Center at Community Park topped the list of favored places to assign some of the money. How much of the estimated $18-$20 million center cost might be covered by the reserves is unknown, but the thinking around City Hall for years has been that most of the cost would be covered by a revenue bond and/or annual budget savings and that unallocated reserves

would be used essentially as a down payment on the work. Also gaining substantial council support was the notion of making a hefty contribution toward reducing a employee retirement fund’s estimated $6.5 million underfunded liability. The city pays about $1 million annually into the fund, that provides retirement benefits for non-safety workers who retired form the city before 2012. For every extra $1 million contributed annually the city would save $150,000, according to a staff report. Mayor Steve Vaus called the liability “a credit card we should pay down.” The undergrounding of utility lines all along Espola Road also gained a thumbs up from the council. The city is already planning on doing about 2,000 lineal feet, using accumulated and projected “Rule 20A” funds from utility companies. That would exhaust the city’s

water during the recent winter storms, councilmembers said they weren’t convinced an artififical field would hold up over the years or pass related clean water regulations. Suggestions from the audience included the reconstruction of the northern portion of the Iron Mountain hiking trail, which struck a receptive chord with the council. At the bottom of the council’s priority list were proposed extensions of the purple recycled water lines from the business down Community and Pomerado roads. Councilmembers said they endorsed the concept, but expressed doubt that enough water could be produced from the City of San Diego recycling plant to fill the lines. City staff will double-check the ballot votes (there was late-hour confusion on some items) and will spend the next 4-6 weeks preparing a proposed surplus fund allocation plan.

Withdrawal avoids election battle THUMBS UP to state Sen. Marty Block for deciding to drop his June primary election bid, where he was set to face a very formidable challenge from Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, the outgoing Assembly speaker. Until his withdrawal announcement last week, the two Democrats were headed for an expensive battle over who would represent the 39th District, which includes Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch. How Atkins ended up challenging Block is a bit of mystery. She says Block had told her last year that he would not seek another term. Block says he doesn’t recall the conversation. In any case, a lot of effort, money (and television ads) will be saved. THUMBS UP to Poway High School girls basketball coach Jay Trousdale for his 611th win, setting a new San Diego CIF Section mark. The previous record had been set in 2006 by a Santana High School coach, who said he was glad that it was Trousdale who surpassed the milestone. Trousdale has coached for 29 years and has guided teams to 10 Palomar League titles and four section crowns. Congratulations, coach! THUMBS DOWN to the City of San Diego for making it a real challenge for someone to report a burned-out streetlight, which might explain why Rancho Bernardo seems to be getting a little darker each night. See if you can follow this logic: to report a street light, you must click “Report a pothole” on the city’s website, sandiego.gov. (We’re not making this up.) From there, you need to click on a request for service, then find “streetlight repair” on the drop-down menu. There’s got to be a better way. THUMBS UP to the Poway Unified School District Board of Education for beginning discussions on ways to shorten board meetings, which often run four or five hours. While no decisions were reached during the Jan. 26 meeting, some progress was made. Board members should also figure out a way cut down on the number of special meeting held, and should ban the holding of special meetings on Sundays. That’s happened twice so for this year. THUMBS UP to the non-profit Neighborhood Healthcare upon its announcement that construction could start this spring on the long-awaited Gold Family Health Center on Poway Road (the vacant lot on which a Wendy’s restaurant once stood). Fundraising started out slowly, but officials announced last week that $2.4 million of the needed $3 million had been secured - enough to break ground on a medical clinic that will provide care to the underserved in our area. THUMBS UP and best wishes to former Poway City Clerk Sheila Cochran, who left last week for a new job with the City of Carlsbad, her hometown. Her professionalism and the positive energy she brought to her job will be missed by those who worked with her, and by members of the public with whom she dealt.

OUR READERS WRITE Water’s a bargain in Poway We reluctantly moved to Fallbrook after nearly 30 years in Poway in order to retire near our kids and parents. Our water/sewer bill in the only house our kids had ever known has ranged in the last year around $185 for every two months. This included water usage of about 14 units (10,472 gallons) of sweet Poway water. That was a much larger house, with four bathrooms, more people living in it, and fruit trees; but we have always tried to be water-wise. Total cost per month in Poway was under $93 for 5,236 gallons of water, plus sewer. Here in the Rainbow Water District, our monthly

bill for sewer and water has been $150.43 for our consistent three units of usage, $141.43 of which is flat rate charges, even if we did not use any water at all! I am not complaining, but I wanted to share this news so that you in Poway can be thankful for what clean, nice, affordable water you have, even if rates go up somewhat. Hillary Clinton should be in prison

t is incomprehensible, given the public facts that are now available regarding Hillary Clinton’s abuse of state secrets, that anyone in their right mind could even momentarily consider supporting her candidacy for president. It is a sad commentary on the decline of America’s two-party system that she is the Democrat front-runner, blindly supported by party leadership. The evidence made public to date is both daming and irrefutable. Ms. Clinton cannot claim ignorance in the handling of these materials because, as a cabinet officer who could authorize clearance, she received formal training in both the classification process and the standards required for handling classified information. She knew that the information in most of the 22 top secret emails she surreptitiously transferred from

government servers to her own was in the Top Secret/SAP category the moment it was created because of the way it was collected. Intelligence gathered through some covert activities is classified top secret the moment it is collected to prevent our adversaries from knowing about our intelligence gathering capabilities. Revealing that information compromises our capability. It also puts lives at risk, because the sources are often well-placed operatives who get killed when their true allegiances are revealed. Peoples’ lives and national security should trump political expediency or convenience. Ms. Clinton’s behavior in this regard is despicable. Ms. Clinton’s actions are exponentially more serious than the behavior of Gen. David Patraeus, who was convicted and fined for inadvertently sharing

confidential information with his biographer. In comparing his behavior to Ms. Clinton’s, based on punishment he received, in all fairness Ms. Clinton should receive life in prison without possibility of parole. When Ms. Clinton says “nothing was marked classified at the time I sent or received it,” she is lying with the truth. This is a bit like Bill Clinton saying he “never had sex with that woman,” even though his semen was found down the front of Monica Lewinski’s dress. It is true that nothing was “marked classified” because no messages or information are ever marked “classified.” They are marked “Confidential,” “Secret,” “Top Secret,” or “Top Secret/SAP.” The specific classifications are used rather than the generic term “classified.” Further, for classified information, the presence or absence of classifications has no bearing on the classified status of the information itself. Classified information is classified and she knows it. The investigation into Ms. Clinton’s misdeeds is not a partisan witch hunt. It is being led by an Obama appointee, FBI Director James Comey. The current leadership at the State Department are all Obama appointees, as are the heads the major intelligence agencies. Two wild cards remain in play. If

an indictment is handed down, it will have to come from Democrat U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Regardless of the evidence she receives from Director Comey, she could decide not to indict. Barak Obama could issue Ms. Clinton a blanket pardon on his way out the door, to prevent her conviction from tarnishing his presidency. Her most recent challenge for the State Department to release the 22 Top Secret/SAP emails so people could see for themselves is the height of haughtiness. She knows the emails won’t be released, even to many of the investigators, because the information is ultra-sensitive. They won’t be released for the exact same reason they never should have been on her server. Duuhhh! Because these messages were on her server, however, the server itself became classified. It was stored in the bathroom of her computer tech. This is absurd beyond belief. Yet mainstream Democrats hope that after New Hampshire she’ll cruise to the nomination. Give me a break. Poway — Guustaaf Gerard “Gus” Sipkes, 84, of Mount Pleasant, SC, widower of anneke Johanna Roetert Sipkes (2008), passed away on January 24, 2016. Gus was born in Indonesia on May 15, 1931, to Dutch parents, the late Gerard Sipkes and Catherina van Rhijn-Sipkes. Gus moved to the Netherlands at the age of 3, and completed his studies in electrical engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, after having served three years in the Royal Netherlands air Force. In 1960, Gus accepted a position in Switzerland with the ohio-based corporation NCR because he and anneke hoped to

emigrate to the United States someday. after working for NCR in Zurich, Switzerland, and Zeist, the Netherlands, Gus was offered a position with NCR in Columbia, SC, and in 1976 the family of five emigrated to america. Gus retired as General Manager from NCR in San Diego,

Ca, in 1989, and moved to Mt. Pleasant with his wife in 2007, after having lived in Poway, California for 23 years. Gus served for many years with United way and Kiwanis International, and he enjoyed reading, playing the piano, sailing, tennis, woodworking, and traveling. Though he was a career man whose aim was to provide for his family, he was truly happiest in his hours away from the office when he was able to spend time, enjoy games and sports, and travel, with his family and friends. He was a gentle soul with a kind heart who lived by the motto, “It doesn’t cost anything to be nice!” Gus will be greatly missed by his family and all who

knew him. Gus is survived by his three children, annemarie Sipkes Donato of Mt. Pleasant, SC, alexander Sipkes of New york, Ny, and Elisabeth Sipkes and her wife, Mascha Jansen op de Haar, of Mt. Broncos using heartbreaking playoff defeat as fuel BY TERRY MONAHAN The girls soccer season did not begin at Rancho Bernardo with the first practice in November. No, it actually started a year ago. That’s when the Broncos’ season ended abruptly with a 2-1 loss in overtime to Steele Canyon in the San Diego Section Division I semifinals. "It took me nine days to get over that one,’’ Broncos coach Mark Sidebottom said. "We outshot them 26-6 for the game and 10-2 in overtime before they scored the golden goal. "We threw everything at them but the kitchen sink. "I still remind the girls from that team that are playing for me this year about that game as a way to keep them moving in the right direction.’’ Sidebottom’s tactic seems to be working. The Broncos sit atop the Palomar League standings after a spectacular first round of league play. Included in the round are victories over Poway (4-0) and Westview (3-2) as well as a rare win over Torrey Pines (2-1). The Broncos entered this week with a 10-3-2 overall record. "This season is going great,’’ said senior center midfielder Amanda Roy. "We’re on a winning streak and we’re in first place.’’ Times, at least for Roy and her returning teammates, are happier than they were after that Steele Canyon loss. "I could say it took me a while to get over that loss, but I’m not sure I have gotten over it yet,’’ Roy said. "We were good enough to be in the finals. I don’t know about winning it but we should have gotten there. "The minute that game ended I saw one of the seniors and she was crushed. I was

The Poway High boys basketball team has reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in eight years. The Titans picked up their 20th victory last Friday, beating rival and host Rancho Bernardo 52-43 in a Palomar League game. The Titans enter this week with a 20-3 overall record and 3-1 mark in league. Sophomore Jordan Cooke-Harper delivered 18 points, 17 rebounds and five blocked shots. Eli Hamson added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Poway.

Trent piling up goals for Marantha Christian BY TERRY MONAHAN At the first girls soccer practice last season, Maranatha coach J.D. Tena noticed something familiar the moment he saw Sarah Trent. Then a freshman, Trent had such a desire to score goals from her forward position that it reminded Tena of his brother, Joaquin, who also displayed the same mindset on the field. "I grew up in a soccer family and my brother has a scorer’s mentality,’’ Tena said. "After that first practice I called my brother and told him about Sarah. "He told me to be her motivator, to make it all challenging and try to reinvent the game for her. Just let her go.’’ Tena’s first impression of Trent, now a 5-foot-7 1/2 sophomore forward, was correct. She led the Eagles in scoring as a freshman with 27 goals and six assists. This year she has been even better. She is leading the team once again in scoring. In fact, Trent has already scored more goals than last year. She has found the back of the net 28 times, entering this week. "Soccer gives me a feeling when I score a goal that no other sport can,’’ Trent said. "A goal makes me feel like all the hard work has paid off. This is what I’m supposed to do on the field.’’ It’s what Trent has done since her parents first signed her and two of her three brothers up to play indoor at North County Soccer Park.

Life in the crease is a mix of glory and bruises. "I get pushed around a lot, knocked to the ground,’’ Trent said. "Every time I hit the ground it makes me stronger for the next time I get near the goal. "What’s really frustrating is when the referees don’t call the obvious fouls.

"I’ve never been hit in the face or nose. One time I ran into a goalie and hurt my knee. The goalie never even hit the ground. I was out for a month with a hyperextended knee.’’ She spent two weeks on crutches. "I had to rest a lot because my arms got so tired,’’ Trent added. "At least we won the tournament.’’ Her time away from the field proved to be enlightening for Trent.

"The break was good for me because it made me realize what I had,’’ said Trent, who plays travel ball for San Diego Soccer Club. "I was taking soccer for granted. I found out what a blessing I had. "Some kids never get to exercise and will never know the feeling I get on the field.’’ Trent’s presence that whole time, though, was missed by the Eagles. "She’s gotten so much stronger from last year and her game has gotten even better too,’’ Tena said. "She has more of a presence on the field. The other girls know we’re a better team with her out there. "Even when two defenders are on her, she finds a way to get through them to score. She can pull a new trick out of her hat. She can adapt her game to what defenders are doing. "Shut her off one way and she’ll find another way to get it done.’’ Trent’s goal, and that of her teammates, includes winning the Ocean League championship and surpassing last year’s playoff effort. Maranatha was eliminated by San Diego Jewish Academy in its opening playoff game. Presently, the Eagles sit in second place, trailing only Foothills Christian in the standings. "One of our goals is to win a playoff game,’’ Trent said. "We want to win league and we’re having a good year, although the season has gone really fast.’’ Monahan is a freelance writer.

Two Level-5 North County Gymnastics teams captured titles at the South Conference 2nd Prelim recently held at the Toby Wells YMCA in San Diego. The Level-5 team ages 7-8 took first place with a score of 180.450. The Level-5 team ages 11-and-up won with a score of 185.450. Nathan Roman (age 7/8) and Jacob Faulkner (11/12) both captured individual all-around titles at the event. Roman had the highest Level-5 score (66.1), regardless of age group, out of 75 boys. He scored 11.5 on his floor routine, 11.6 on the pommel horse, 11.0 on rings, 10.1 on vault and 11.4 on parallel bars. Faulkner scored 10.9 on floor, 11.5 on the pommel horse, 10.6 on rings and 11.3 on the parallel bars. He finished with an all-around score of 64.50. Capturing gold medals at Level 8 from North County Gymnastics were Sean Land and Ethan Etheridge. Land took first in rings with a score of 11.80 and Etheridge won titles in floor (12.40) and vault (12.60). Other first-place winners were:

Plum making her mark at Washington BY JOHN MAFFEI There is only one number that matters to Poway native Kelsey Plum — the one in the win column. In her 2 1/2 seasons at Washington, the women’s basketball team is 59-29, including 16-5 this season and a recent ranking of No. 25 in the nation. “I want to help the team,” said Plum, the former La Jolla Country Day star. Plum helps the Huskies by scoring, averaging 27 points a game this season and leading the nation with 166 free throws made. Friday at Stanford, she became the third player in Washington’s 41-year women’s basketball history to score 2,000 career points. “I’ve been asked to score,” Plum said. “Coach (Mike) Neighbors gets mad if I pass an opportunity to score. “We have a team that shoots well with good spacing. So that leads to lanes for me to drive. “But I like to pass. I like to rebound. I like bringing

I wanted a good program that was on the rise, a program I could help get to the top.” Washington last won a conference title in 2000-01. The Huskies haven’t finished higher than fourth in the conference since 2003-04. Plum received a great high school foundation at La Jolla Country Day. The Torreys went 103-22 in her four varsity seasons, winning four straight San Diego Section Division IV titles and a state championship in 2011-12 when the team went 32-1. “La Jolla Country Day is the reason I’m here,” Plum said. “Terri Bamford is the most amazing coach and women I’ve ever known. “The program breeds excellence. Hear WWII love songs on Valentine’s Day

Mike Chamberlin will perform in RB on Feb. 14

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK This Valentine’s Day, take a musical journey back in time when Mike Chamberlin performs love songs of the World War II era in Rancho Bernardo. Chamberlin, aka “The Singing TV Guy,” will be performing the romantic music during the Ed Brown Center’s next “Sunday Afternoons @ 3” concert. The hour-long event will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 in the center, 18402 W. Bernardo Drive in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 12 and younger. Purchase by going to the center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays or calling 858-487-9324. “I am on a musical mission to keep alive the memory of ‘the greatest generation’ through the love songs of World War II,” he said. “Some of the greatest love songs of all time came from the early 1940s and the call to arms. “We just marked the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII and we are losing 1,000 WWII vets every day,” he said. “I want to honor them with music while they are still with us.” Chamberlin, who plays the guitar while

His music career was sidetracked when drafted into the Army during Vietnam, but upon his return, Chamberlin became a radio disc jockey. That led to a career in television as a news anchor and water-sports analyst for ESPN. After retiring from TV journalism four years ago, Chamberlin focused on his music and now gives around 250 concerts a year throughout Southern California. This is his first time performing at the Ed Brown Center, but he is known in the area for his concerts at The Gateway in Poway. In addition to performing World War II love songs, Chamberlin said his repertoire includes music through the decades — primarily ‘20s through ‘60s) — and “a very popular Christmas show.” Chamberlin said he loves music because of its universality because even when people don’t speak the same language, they can communicate through music. “I love music in every form,” he added.

SD REP’s ‘Outside Mullingar’ is a funny, exasperating love story REVIEW BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK “Outside Mullingar” is not your typical love story, but one that if you’re willing to stick it out has sweet rewards and plenty of laughs. The romantic comedy written by Tony Award, Oscar and Pulitzer winner John Patrick Shanley can be seen in an intimate setting at the Lyceum Space Theatre in downtown San Diego’s Horton Plaza. It is the fourth show in San Diego Repertory Theatre’s 40th season and its run has been extended through Feb. 21. After it debuted on Broadway, “Outside Mullingar” was nominated for a 2014 Tony Award for Best Play. Shanley, the author of the award-winning movie “Moonstruck” and play “Doubt: A Parable,” tapped into his Irish heritage to write “Outside Mullingar” after visiting his family’s farm in Ireland. It features Rancho Penasquitos resident Manny Fernandes as Anthony Reilly; Carla Harting as his neighbor, Rosemary Muldoon; and real-life husband and wife Mike Genovese and Ellen Crawford as their aging parents, Tony Reilly and Aoife Muldoon. The one-act play is set in a rural community in Ireland, starting in late 2008 and spanning the four years after. The play begins right after the funeral of Aoife’s husband. She and her daughter stop by their neighbors’ farm and Aoife asks Tony what plans he has made for leaving the farm to Anthony since she has to make similar arrangements for her farm and Rosemary. That leads to the surprising revelation to all that Tony is not likely to leave the farm to Anthony, despite his decades of work on it to keep it going, because his 40-something bachelor son is not likely to have an heir and Tony wants to ensure its ownership stays within the Reilly family, like it has for the past 120 years. The revelation sets off a storm of emotions not only for Anthony, who feels betrayed by his father, but Rosemary who has a few secrets of her own, including an unrequited flame for Anthony that first sparked when she was 6 and the then-young teen pushed her to the ground during a birthday party. Though feigning a dislike for Anthony, the now mid-30s Rosemary’s true feelings are not so obscure to the elderly adults, unlike the clueless Anthony who has rejected romantic love ever since a girl named Fiona broke his heart at 16. All four cast members do a terrific job in believably portraying their characters’ range of

Though the subject matter is at times depressing, there are enough funny lines and situations to quickly alleviate the down times. While a main thread of the plot is Rosemary’s unrequited love for Anthony, it is also about their constant, devoted love for their near-death parents and how the relationship between Anthony’s father and mother has unfairly colored the way Tony treats his namesake. At times that treatment is quite unfair and abusive, since Tony repeatedly says Anthony “is not a true Reilly” because Anthony’s quiet, non-confronting nature is so unlike Tony’s and Anthony physically resembles his mother’s family. Fernandes excels in expressing the wide range of emotions and struggles Anthony experiences and Harting has excellent comedic timing since she has most of the funny lines. Her role requires exasperating patience when dealing with Anthony’s internal struggle with romantic love, one that has some very unexpected and hilarious twists and turns. “Outside Mullingar” can be seen in matinee and evening shows until Feb. 21. Looking Ahead Dear Looking, Calculating an approximate number of how much you’ll need to save for a comfortable retirement is actually pretty easy, and doesn’t take long to do. It’s a simple, three-step process that includes estimating your future living expenses, tallying up your retirement income and calculating the difference. There are even a host of online calculators that can help you with this too.

Living expenses

The first step is the most difficult — estimating your living expenses when you retire. If you want a quick

ballpark estimate, figure around 75 to 85 percent of your current gross income. That’s what most people find they need to maintain their current lifestyle in retirement. If you want a more precise estimate, track your current living expenses on a worksheet and deduct any costs you expect to go away or decline when you retire, and add whatever new ones you anticipate. Costs you can scratch off your list include work-related expenses like commuting or lunches out, as well as the amount you’re socking away for retirement. You may also be able to deduct your mortgage if you expect to have it paid off by retirement, and your kid’s college expenses. Your income taxes should also be less. On the other hand, some costs will probably go up when you retire, like health care, and depending on your interests you may spend a lot more

on travel, golf or other hobbies. And, if you’re going to be retired for 20 or 30 years you also need to factor in the occasional big budget items like a new roof, furnace or car.

Tally income

Step two is to calculate your retirement income. If you and/or your wife contribute to Social Security, go to ssa.gov/myaccount to get your personalized statement that estimates what your retirement benefits will be at age 62, full retirement age and when you turn 70. In addition to Social Security, if you or your wife has a traditional pension plan from an employer, find out from the plan administrator how much you are likely to get when you retire. And, figure in any other income from other sources you expect to have, such as rental properties, part-time work, etc.

Calculate the difference

The final step is to do the calculations. Subtract your annual living expenses from your annual retirement income. If your income alone can cover your bills, you’re all set. If not, you’ll need to tap your savings, including your 401(k) plans, IRAs, or other investments to make up the difference.

So, let’s say for example you need around $55,000 a year to meet your living expenses and pay taxes, and you and your wife expect to receive $30,000 a year from Social Security and other income. That leaves a $25,000 shortfall that you’ll need to pull from your nest egg each year ($55,000 – $30,000 = $25,000). Then, depending on what age you want to retire, you need to multiply your shortfall by at least 25 if you want to retire at 60, 20 to retire at 65, and 17 to retire at 70 – or in this case that would equate to $625,000, $500,000 and $425,000, respectively. Why 25, 20 and 17? Because that would allow you to pull 4 percent a year from your savings, which is a safe withdrawal strategy that in most cases will let your money last as long as you do. A fundraiser for the RB Business Association, the race is a regular Spirit of the Fourth activity. Sponsorships are requested in May and June. You’ll know it’s duck season (not wabbit season) when Realtor Patti Hall dons her waterfowl costume and waddles around town. And therein lies the mystery: Why doesn’t the RBBA sell event sponsorships year-round? Corporate budgets all start at different times, and fitting a non-profit organization’s fundraising request into that budget sometimes takes finesse. Plus with so many non-profit groups vying for attention, something must be done to stand out of the crowd a bit more. Since wearing a duck suit year-round isn’t practical, an alternative promotional tool may be in order. Fans of the TV show “How I Met Your Mother” remember Barney, the unrestrained character who was forced to wear a rubber duck-imprinted necktie. I wore this same tie (Amazon, $17) to the RB Foundation Thanksgiving Luncheon and found it attracted tremendous awareness. Then County Supervisor Dave Roberts gave my tie a shout-out from the podium. No fooling! Now let’s connect the dots:

• RBBA has a rubber duck fundraiser it re-sells each spring • RBBA needs to stand out of the crowd • Rubber duck ties are an inexpensive promotional tool Conclusion: Having RBBA sales reps regularly wearing rubber duck ties year-round will brand them to the race and increase sales opportunities. This lesson also applies to your business. Competition for every kind of customer attention is horrific…and getting worse. And if you’re like most businesses you go hunting for business only when you want more customers, but then slack off when you’re too busy. It’s a mistake! Regardless of your message, finding gentle ways to develop ongoing visibility provides reasons for people to seek you out and do business with you. Furthermore, if you’re marketing yourself while your competition isn’t, guess who’s going to get the business. Of course, if he’s marketing and you aren’t…guess who’s getting the business.
