BY EMILY SORENSEN Theft and burglary were up in 2015 in Poway, according to data compiled by a regional agency. According to ARJIS (the Automated Regional Justice Information System), property crimes were up 17 percent in 2015, at 512 crimes, compared to 436 in 2014. Due to a FBI mandated change in the definition of rape for the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, there can be no comparison of crime statistics for 2015 to previous years in the categories of rape, aggravated assaults, total violent crime and crime index total (violent and property crimes combined), since all four of these categories have been impacted. According to the ARJIS website, “The new definition of rape has been broadened to include male victims, sodomy, penetration with any body part or objects, and no longer requires force.” The new definition — posted under the “help” tab at crimestats.arjis.org — went into effect on Jan. 1, 2015. Poway did see one murder in 2015, with no reported murders in 2014. Armed robberies saw a 12 percent decrease in 2015, at seven crimes in 2015 compared to eight in 2014, but strong arm robberies were up 20 percent, with six reported crimes in 2015 and five in 2014. Property crimes, which include residential and non-residential burglary, theft greater than or equal to than $400, theft less than $400 and motor vehicle theft, saw a near-universal rise, with the exception of motor vehicle theft, which had 30 reported crimes in 2015 compared to 2014, which had 32, and non-residential burglaries, which saw a nearly 9 percent decrease from 53 crimes in 2014 to 49 in 2015. Residential burglaries saw a 46 percent increase, at 66 crimes in 2015 compared to 45 in 2014. Despite the drop in non-residential burglaries, total burglaries saw a rise of about 17 percent in 2015 with 115 crimes, compared to 98 in 2014. Thefts greater than or equal to $400 were up nearly 41 percent in 2015, with 142 reported crimes compared to 101 in 2014, and thefts less than $400 were up almost 10 percent in 2015, with 225 reported crimes compared to 205 in 2014. Total thefts overall were up nearly 20 percent, at 367 reported crimes, compared to 306 in 2014.

Concert for Gwynn Memorial is April 1

A concert to raise money for the proposed Tony Gwynn Memorial will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, April1 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Headlining “Music and Memorials: Honoring a Hometown Hero” will be Tim Flannery, with his band, The Lunatic Fringe. Flannery is a popular former San Diego Padres player and base coach. He is also a prolific and talented songwriter; an award-nominated musician who regularly packs venues across the globe. Also performing will be Mayor Steve Vaus, a Grammy and Emmy award winner. A longtime Padres fan, Vaus first gained local attention in 1984 for writing and performing songs about the San Diego Padres for KFMB radio. Another performer will be Eve Selis, winner

of seven San Diego Music Awards in the Americana and adult alternative categories. Additonal acts will be announce in coming days by the city’s Community Services Department. The culmination of the evening will be the unveiling of the selected memorial design. Also planned is a live auction of unique Tony Gwynn memorabilia and the opportunity to purchase a niche on the memorial’s donor wall. Local radio legend Mark Larson will serve as master of ceremonies. Tickets, which range from $60 to $100 are on sale at: powaycenter.com/ 332/Music-Memories--Honoring-a -Hometown-Hero. Transgender discussion draws hundreds to school meeting BY EMILY SORENSEN An issue about transgender rights at Rancho Bernardo High School drew several hundred people to the Poway Unified Board of Education meeting Tuesday night. There were so many attendees in fact, many bearing signs or wearing homemade badges and buttons, that the meeting room was entirely full and attendees were forced to watch the meeting

from the lobby, which was also nearly full to capacity. Speaking under public comment, ten members of the public spoke on transgender rights vs. privacy rights for all students, after a student at Rancho Bernardo High School complained about being uncomfortable changing in the locker room for PE class with a transgender student. Assembly Bill 1266, which was approved by the

governor in August 2013, legally allows transgender students to use facilities on campus based on their gender identity, not on the gender that is listed on their school records. This bill was implemented into PUSD’s administrative procedures in January 2014. This is the first issue that has been raised since its implementation. The transgender student’s identity has not been SEE SCHOOL, A10

Yoga class aims to help veterans BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK A new, free yoga program to help current and former military personnel and their families is available at the Rancho Bernardo-Glassman Recreation Center. The Warriors for Healing yoga class is based on mind-body-spirit science to help reduce participants’ stress and optimize their health. Instructor Grace Flores said it is especially helpful for veterans coping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. “There are 22 veterans per day who commit suicide because they are not able to overcome their trauma, which comes in many shapes and ways,” Flores said. According to Flores, who has had many family members serve, the military’s method of breaking an individual down and building the person back up to identify with his or her unit can cause an identity crisis when the person separates from the military. “We see it with our veterans, that they lose a sense of identity when they belong to something and now it is not there anymore,” she said. “They can have an identity crisis, depending on their experiences.” Flores said sometimes that leads to substance abuse, domestic violence and

POLL OF THE WEEK

other issues because society expects them to revert to their pre-military civilian life, but combat, severe injuries or long, multiple deployments have changed them. They cannot simply go back to the way things were before their military service. She said yoga and its meditative components provides a way for veterans to connect with themselves again. “When they are alone on the mat with their body, they can feel safe, loved and no longer in harm’s way,” she said. “It becomes a way to connect back to the present.” The free class is sponsored by Warriors for Healing. It is taught each Monday from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. in the Rancho Bernardo-Glassman Recreation Center, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive. (There will not be a class on Feb. 15 due to Presidents’ Day.) For details, contact Flores at 619-729-1691 or puragrace@att.net or go to warriorsforhealing.org.

Marriage mentoring leads to friendship

BY EMILY SORENSEN Daniel Waldorf and his fiance, Gaby Goff, were looking for pre-marital advice. What they ended up with was a unique friendship with their mentors. Waldorf, 29, and Goff, 23, were “church-shopping” about nine months ago when they discovered the marriage mentoring program at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church (RBCPC), which they were attending at the time. It was through this program that Waldorf and Goff were introduced to their mentors, Jack and Betty Guenthard, who have been married for 60 years. The Guenthards are one of ten mentoring couples that work with a variety of engaged, newlywed and married couples through the marriage mentoring program at RBCPC. Though the program is centered out of the church, it is a community program and it is open to the public. “It’s a wonderful program,”said Betty Guenthard. “It’s two couples in a friendly, relaxed relationship talking and sharing experiences.” The program is a mentorship, not counseling, the Guenthards stressed. “We do not do counseling,” said Jack Guenthard. Instead, mentors typically handle three different types of couples: providing support for couples with slight problems in their marriage; happy couples looking to make their marriages even happier; and newlyweds and engaged couples who need an experienced couple to walk alongside

Daniel Waldorf and Gaby Goff, who will be married in March.

them and provide advice and wisdom. The program has been around for about two years. Mentor couples are asked to undergo eight weeks of online training to prepare them to mentor younger couples. The Guenthards are one of three marriage mentors Goff and Waldorf have formed relationships with throughout their engagement. They have also been meeting with a younger couple, who have been married 10 years, from Maranatha Chapel and a pastor from St. Bartholomew’s Episcopalian Church, where they will be married in March. “Gaby and I both wanted to be as prepared as possible for marriage,” said Waldorf.

Starbucks about once a month and talk. It’s great to develop a relationship with someone who has been through it all.” Goff said that she and Waldorf definitely want to keep up the friendship with the Guenthards after they are married. “We’ll meet up once more this month, then again a month or so after we’re married, then every few months after that,” said Goff. “It’s nice to have an anchor, and not be left floundering on our own.” Participating in the mentoring program is free. If you’re interested in getting friendly help for your engagement or marriage, contact Jack and Betty Guenthard at 858-451-1520 or rbbetty@san.rr.com.

“We’re both people who like to be prepared. We keep saying we have a lot of tools in our toolbox.” Goff said it’s been interesting to receive three different perspectives on marriage from her and Waldorf’s three different mentoring programs. Both Waldorf and Goff said that while receiving the life experience and wisdom from the Guenthards’ 60 years of marriage has been invaluable, the best part of the nine months they’ve spent in their mentorship has been developing a friendship with the couple. “The best part of the program has been developing a relationship with Jack and Betty,” said Waldorf. “We meet up at

RB home burglarized, residents tied up

Police ask locals to review their security cameras

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Police said they need the public’s help in identifying three males who burglarized a Rancho Bernardo home in the early morning. Lt. Todd Griffin with San Diego Police Department’s Robbery Unit said the men entered the home on the 11400 block of Aliento Court

around 2 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5 through a side garage door that had been left unlocked while the residents slept. The average-height men (estimated at around 5-foot 8-inches) were dressed in dark pants, dark hoodies and a bandana or other cloth covering their faces, he said. One of the suspects had a pistol. The suspects tied up the home’s two occupants with shoelaces before taking an undisclosed amount of money and jewelry, according to Griffin. The victims,

both in their late 40s, were able to get free after the men left and called for help at 3:42 a.m. Neither was hurt. Griffin said it is too early for police to conclusively connect the burglary in Rancho Bernardo’s Westwood neighborhood with a similar early morning burglary by three men of an occupied home in the 10700 block of Passerine Way in Sorrento Valley on Jan. 31. In both cases the suspects entered via a side door with no signs of forced entry. “We’re exploring the possibility that they are connected, but it is

too early to tell,” he said on Friday afternoon. “We’re still processing the evidence, like fingerprints and DNA. At this point we think that maybe they are connected because they are very similar — same time of day and getting in through an unlocked door.” Griffin said police would like Rancho Bernardo residents who have surveillance cameras at their homes to review their footage, dating back to Jan. 30, to see if anyone suspicious in the neighborhood was recorded. “See if there is a suspicious figure

walking by your house or car,” he said. Anyone with information is asked to call SDPD’s Robbery Unit at 619-531-2299 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. He said there is no indication at this time that the Feb. 5 burglary is connected to any of the other residential robberies recently reported in Rancho Bernardo. In the meantime, Griffin said police would like to remind people again about the importance of locking their doors and windows, and turning on their outside lights.

Free concert Saturday at Poway Library BY EMILY SORENSEN Singer-songwriter Nina Francis will bring her soothing original music to the Poway Library at 2 p.m. Saturday for a free concert. The concert is part of the library’s award-winning Acoustic Showcase concert series. The concerts are always free and open to the public. Francis, who has been performing professionally since she was 13, said her music “is just me and my guitar. Sometimes I add things to it, but that’s the heart of it,” she said. Concert attendees can expect a relaxing, pensive afternoon, said Francis. “Songwriting is my passion, and I love to tell a story.” She said her voice has been described as “soothing,” and that she’s been compared to singer Norah Jones. “Like a Norah Jones that rocks out sometimes,” she said. Francis, a San Diego native and USC graduate, has played music professionally since she was a teenager, including shows with San Diego music legend Peter Sprague. “When I was 13, Peter Sprague let me open for him,” she said. Francis had met Sprague when her high school jazz band recorded in his studio. She was the lead singer and said Sprague was interested in her talent. Though she said she still loves jazz, her sound is more “folky-bop.” Her love for writing music grew out of her love of storytelling, she said. “I’ve always loved art,” said Francis. “I always wrote short stories and drew cartoons and wrote songs. I always loved pop songs, how much emotion they could pack into

three or four minutes and how they could tell a story.” Francis released an EP in 2014, and though she hasn’t yet released her first full album, she did recently release a new single, “Boomerang,” recorded with the band FEiN. “FEiN is a very hip group, it was really fun to work with them,” said Francis. She said she was still working on her new album, and has been writing new songs for it. “I’ve been collecting good songs related to boy drama, so very juicy stuff. They’re very relatable.” Francis said she hasn’t set a date for her album’s release. Fans will have a new outlet to enjoy Francis’ music as she said she will be resuming making “Nina Francis Friday” videos on her YouTube channel, youtube.com/ninafrancismusic. This new video series will feature Francis recording herself performing covers and her own original music once a month. “It gives people an opportunity to see what I’m up to,” she said. Francis is also active on social media, including Facebook and Instagram under the name “ninafrancismusic,” and often performs shows around San Diego and Southern California. While her Saturday concert will be her first time performing at the Poway Library, she said she’s previously performed at a library concert in San Marcos, so she is looking forward to it. St. Michael’s students shine at Future City Competition Students at St. Michael’s School in Poway were among 40 teams that recently competed at the Southern California regional Future City Competition in Encinitas. This annual nationwide competition has more than 40,000 students from 1,350 middle schools in regional contests. The winning team from each region receives a trip to the Future City National Finals in Washington, D.C. The winner of this year’s competition was FutureVille, a team from Wildwood School in Los Angeles. Special awards given in 10 categories. Students from St. Michael’s School received two of these awards. Hope Valley, the city designed and created by Allyson Atkins, Ann Palayur, and Vianna Schatz, received The Best Transportation award. Luminous City, designed and created by Lauren Kogelman, Annie Pehrson, and Madeline Duley, received the People’s Choice Award, which was chosen by ballot from all participating teams. Teams were judged by panels of volunteers from St. Michael’s School students Lauren the engineering community on five program elements: a virtual city slide show that each team Kogelman, Annie Pehrson, and designed using SimCity software, a 1,500-word Madeline Duley. essay that outlined the team’s solution to this year’s theme “Waste Not, Want Not,” a city model, built to scale, using mostly recycled material, including at least one moving part and with only a $100 budget, a city presentation of only seven minutes to impress the judges by showcasing what they’ve learned and what their city is all about; and a project plan that shows how the team planned their project.

FROM SCHOOL, A1 revealed. Prior to opening up the topic to speakers, Supt. John Collins spoke briefly, saying that this was an emotional issue and had the chance of being discussed in a disrespectful or hurtful way, which nobody wanted to see. He also reiterated the district’s policy to ensure every student’s right to privacy, as well as their right to feel safe, valued and included on campus. “With input and guidance from the American Association of School Administrators, the California School Boards Association, the ACLU, and the San Diego County Office of Education, our districts will continue our work developing respectful, creative, and reasonable accommodations for all of the students we serve,” said Collins. Due to this issue being raised under public comment and not being an agendized item, the board was unable to comment because of the Brown Act. The topic drew supporters on both sides of the issue, and the first 10 people out of the 17 who submitted speaker slips to speak on the topic were allowed to speak (Poway Unified School District policy limits 10 speakers to a topic under public comment). Several speakers, including Jonathan Franz, the student who made the complaint, and his mother Holly Franz, asked that the district install private changing areas for all students in locker rooms immediately, and work on installing gender-neutral locker rooms and bathrooms on campuses, to prevent students from being uncomfortable changing in front of a transgender student. Holly Franz pointed out that the transgender student had taken to changing

Franz also requested that if a transgender student decides not to use a provided unisex changing room, parents of other students be notified that a transgender student will be utilizing the same locker room as their child. Other speakers who requested private changing stalls for everyone commented that they were concerned about “immodesty” by having a transgender student change in front of other students. Several Rancho Bernardo High students and members of the public spoke out in support of the anonymous transgender student and transgender rights. Nicholas Rui, who wore a dress to make his

comment in support of transgender people, said that singling out the transgender student was “deplorable.” “To say that this student should have to give up his identity because of the discomfort of others is absurd, because I, for one, am uncomfortable with intolerance on our campus. A mandatory unisex restroom for transgender students would be laughable if it were not so dangerous, if it did not take away from this student the one thing that every teenager wants: to be normal, to be accepted for who they are. To know that the school must make special accommodations for you because other people are uncomfortable with your existence would crush any teenager,” said Rui. While the transgender student in question

did not speak at the meeting, his father issued a statement through a spokesperson, Kathie Moehlig of Trans Family Support Services: “I fully support my son and I am proud his bravery. I see this as an opportunity for others like him to feel confident in who they are. The positive support we have received from the parents, teachers and administrators at Rancho Bernardo High School makes my family grateful to be part of a caring, enlightened community.” No action on the issue was announced at the meeting.

Having met in 2011 at a singles group, the level of our friendship has progressed into a wonderful companionship. Unlike most couples, Jerry, being a retired Sharon Prescott and engineer, began Jerry Toller wowing me with practical gifts, such as some LED lighting or a high-tech weather thermometer after I only had asked for a small night light and an old-fashioned thermometer for my patio. I, on the other hand, had taken the phrase “the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” to a new level by

utilizing my culinary skills in preparing unusual meals for Jerry. As a matter of fact, Jerry has quite a portfolio of my meal presentations, thanks to the technology of the cell phone. All joking aside, Jerry often surprises me on many unexpected occasions with flowers and beautiful baubles that are always treasured and appreciated. We enjoy being with one another, whether going to a movie, traveling together, treating ourselves to one of Costco’s delicious hot dogs on a Sunday afternoon, or relaxing at the poolside at the Oaks North Club. Family is very important to us. Jerry and I have four grown children and two beautiful grandsons between us. We both enjoy family gatherings and when asked, love babysitting for the little ones. In the past few years, Jerry has taught me bridge, and at the present time, we both are taking a Spanish conversation class through the Poway Adult Education division. Lastly, we always seem to be on the same page. If one were to ask why our friendship has continued to blossom—being honest, considerate, loving, and respectful towards each other.

‘One life, one love forever’ BY WALT WILLIAMS It was 1951, during the Korean War, and I was serving in the Navy on a seaplane tender. As “white hats” will do, we passed off-duty time on the boat deck by showing off pictures of our girlfriends. My friend Lyle showed us a picture of his “girlfriend,” Joyce, and we thought he was pulling our leg! She was beautiful and we were sure it was a picture of a model or an actress. We were impressed. Reassigned stateside to San Diego in 1952, Lyle and I often drove to Anaheim for liberty, since most local girls would have nothing to do with the lowly white hats from the base at North Island. Joyce lived in Anaheim and would bring along one of her friends so we could double date. Since I grew up in cold country, we planned to go ice skating to celebrate my birthday. My date fell through, and, since Lyle couldn’t ice skate, he suggested Joyce and I go without him. It felt strange to go out with his girl, but he assured me it was okay, so Joyce and I skated, had a milkshake and drove to Venice Beach to watch the boats. As we sat together in the moonlight in my customized purple (yes, purple) convertible, I looked at her and said, “Someday I’ll

Joyce and Walt Williams marry you.” This became our first unofficial date. Joyce and I were engaged three months later and married on July 3, 1953. Friends and family thought it would never last, but we spent 62 wonderful loving years together, with two beautiful daughters, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren as a result of our union. Joyce went to live with Jesus on October 28, 2015. I now wear her wedding ring with its inscription: “One life one love forever.”

Let love bloom this Valentine’s Day!

The Top 5 Ways Your Realtor Directly Impacts the Success of Your Home Sale

If you want the most money for your home…hire the best real estate agent because real estate agents are NOT all created equally! These five factors are critical and make all the difference in you getting the most money for your home in the shortest period of time with the least amount of stress!

1. Preparation!

Pricing- Get realistic! Timing is everything in real estate. Your first couple of weeks on the market is your best opportunity to bring in sincere, qualified buyers. Pricing your home too high results in long market time and that will cost you money in the end. Buyers don’t view long market times favorably. They view this as a sign that “something must be wrong with that house.” Work with an agent who uses current local sales comparables in their analysis to provide you with a true picture of what your home is really worth. Be wary of agents who suggest over inflated selling prices! This will cost you in the end! Professional Photography & Video – When interviewing agents…ask to see their past marketing brochures and closed mls listings. If they didn’t use professional photography & incorporate professional video into their past marketing campaigns… hire someone else! You never get a second chance to make a great first impression. Your homes photos are the first thing buyers see! “Set the stage” - Work with an agent who offers staging and helps you prepare for the market place! Buyers need to view your homes “best side.”

2. Marketing! It takes a lot more to sell your home than simply putting a “For Sale” sign in the front yard! You need massive exposure and it MUST go beyond the MLS! The goal is to bring in as many qualified buyers as possible. This requires a savvy agent with the skill set you need to get your house seen locally and beyond!

3. Negotiation! Negotiations run the entire length of an escrow term. You will be hiring the person who is trying to get you the most money they can for your home. To accomplish this… you’re better served by hiring an expert contract negotiator! If you think you’ve hired

the best agent to help you sell your home because you got them to offer the lowest commission to help sell yours… Think again! If you’re able to negotiate them down to low commission rate…how successful do you thing they will be in getting you top dollar for your home? Or negotiating repairs, contract lengths, accessibility, etc? There will be numerous negotiations on your behalf and a cut rate, quick to lower their commission salesperson is the wrong person for the job!

4. Networking! Your agent is your spokesperson. The associations they belong to are a critical component to the process. Your agent should be a member and attend local “pitch” sessions. Great agents have their finger on the pulse every day! They are your eyes and ears to what is “coming soon” and what people are searching for right now.

5. Experience! Your home is your greatest asset. Lack of experience and limited education when your bottom line is at stake is a risk you shouldn’t take. Every real estate transaction has its own set of nuances. You need an ally on your side who understands the complexities involved at every stage and on every page of the real estate contract. With K & Jamie you get two experienced agents for the price of one. As local residents this powerful mother & daughter team has a vested interest in the success of the clients they work with. If you are thinking about selling your home you deserve a team that delivers results! K and Jamie provide more than 30 years of award winning experience. Call them today to get started on your next and most successful move! K Sorenson, 858.735.2355 | Jamie Melim, 858.354.4906 SeeHomestoBuy.com • info@SeeHomesToBuy.com

Rich Johnson recognized for contributions to real estate industry; speaks at national conference

Rich Johnson is not just another real estate broker. Rich Johnson is an entrepreneur, forward-thinker, community supporter, and founding partner at San Diego-based Windermere Homes & Estates (WHE), the fourth largest residential real estate brokerage in San Diego. Johnson was recently recognized as a finalist for the 2016 Broker of the Year award by the San Diego Association of Realtors (SDAR), the largest trade association in the county, for his success and achievements in the real estate industry. Johnson says he believes his business success has come from three basic principles. “Hire the best people, give them the best tools, and help create thriving communities – that’s how you drive success in real estate today,” said Johnson. “It was an incredible honor to be recognized by the San Diego Association of Realtors as a finalist for Broker of the Year.” Johnson was also chosen as a speaker at the 2016 Inman Connect conference, in New York City on January 26-29, 2016. The conference, a premier real estate event for the real estate industry, invites real estate professionals from across the country to learn from the experts who are on trend and achieving success. Johnson spoke in front of hundreds of influential real estate leaders, sharing his experience in business networking, closing deals, exploring current trends and technology, and learning how to embrace and leverage the change that surrounds the real estate industry. “I’m very proud of my partner. His grasp of technology and how it can be used to benefit our agent’s business is second to none,” says co-owner, Brian Gooding. Johnson has more than 20 years of experience in real estate and is co-owner of the fastest growing franchise group within Windermere’s 300 office Western network along with Brian Gooding. Last year, the franchisee reached a total of over $1.2 billion in annual sales, based on data from Broker Metrics, after just two years in operation. WHE is currently the fourth largest residential real estate brokerage in San Diego based on sales volume, with 12 branches and over 285 agents. Having led a previous firm’s marketing and technology divisions, Johnson is known for being a progressive forward leader. Additionally, he previously served a national real estate company as chair of its technology committee that interfaced with broker owners throughout the country. In that role, Johnson also developed lead generation strategies, online and social programs, and relationship building techniques. “Rich is so deserving of this recognition from the SDAR for his achievements as a broker and business owner. He has contributed so much to the San Diego real estate community through mentorship, community service, and his incredible desire to grow his business,” says President of Windermere Real Estate OB Jacobi. In October 2015, WHE began its expansion outside of San Diego County and opened its first office in Coachella Valley, Calif., where the franchise quickly added 50 new agents to its team in only 60 days. The company continues to grow beyond San Diego having recently opened an office in Big Bear, Calif., and is opening an office in Temecula, Calif. this week. Windermere Homes & Estates plans to hire additional agents for offices in both Temecula and Big Bear. For more information, please contact Rich Johnson at richjohnson@windermere.com or call (858) 487-5110.

READER LOVE STORIES

A second chance at love BY CONNIE HALTERMANN I had met my first husband, Jim Hill, at San Diego State when I was a freshman. He was active in his fraternity as a graduate student after having been active in the same fraternity at the University of Maryland. I was a sorority girl, and we met at a fraternity dance. We fell in love, then married just before my junior year. He was a teacher by then, and felt as I did that I should finish my education. I took a leave of absence from school half-way through my senior year to have our daughter. We named her Kathy, and she was perfect.

Unfortunately, my husband’s health was not so perfect. He had had chronic nephritis, a kidney disease, for years, and his kidneys began to fail. He passed away when Kathy was 10 weeks old. That summer, she and I moved in with my parents so that I could finish my senior year and get my teaching credential. Jim Haltermann had been my husband’s best friend and “little brother” in their fraternity, and had been the first visitor to our home to see Kathy after she was born. When we saw each other at school that fall, we caught up on

each other’s lives and talked for hours about the person we both loved and lost. Jim took Kathy and me under his wing, we fell in love, and we were married the following year. When Jim adopted Kathy a year after that, Jim Hill must have done a happy dance in heaven — and then another — for the date assigned by the court was his birthday. My husband and I have since been blessed with three more children, Karen, Kimberly and Kirk, 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and 55 happy years together.

‘Hey, wanna buy some pizza?’

Kelly and David Mooleghem

!o

BY KELLY MOOLEGHEM I took a job in Ventura County on a whim after I graduated from UC Irvine, but immediately felt it was a mistake. After attending training in San Diego, I decided that was where I needed to be, so I began another job hunt. My co-worker, Amy, would frequently invite me over because she and her husband rented rooms to his

co-workers and she didn’t want to be “the only girl.” But because I was homesick, I went home every weekend, so I declined several times. I spotted David one day on my lunch break. He was selling pizza for a Navy fundraiser. He said to me, “Hey, wanna buy some pizza?” I was so flustered that I shook my head and ran out the door! When I returned from my errand, he was gone. Connie and Jim Haltermann (now) the office, Amy mentioned that she was hungry. I told her, “There were sailors selling pizza, you should have bought some, and please tell me you know the good-looking one with glasses!” She replied, “The tall guy? That’s our roommate, Dave! He hangs out with us when we invite you places!” I didn’t believe her, so she invited me over that night. It was him! A few months later, David was in the other room when I told Amy I found some leads in San Diego and

he said, “That’s my next duty station.” Six months after initially meeting, we started dating. We were long-distance for about a year until I found a job. David proposed on Easter 2011 in front of my family. We were married August 2011 shortly before he deployed, and upon his return we moved to Poway. Looking back, I’m glad I listened to my gut by taking that job; things turned out better than I could have planned.

RB must rally to save celebration BY STEVEN M. DEMATTEO It was disheartening to read last week’s article in the News Journal about the uncertain status of the Spirit of the Fourth, San Diego’s oldest and largest 4th of July celebration. Having served as a board member for seven years and the non-profit’s president for three, I have a first-hand understanding of the challenges faced by this organization over the years. I also have a deep respect for the team of volunteers that assembles every year to put on a first-class, grassroots, all-American Independence Day celebration. To see this tradition fade away due to a lack of community support would be a tragedy. Most people don’t understand that this event doesn’t “just happen.” It’s not funded by taxpayer dollars, homeowners dues, or a wealthy benefactor. Real people, with real jobs, families and conflicting priorities find time to organize, fundraise and sacrifice their spare time to pull off this monstrous task. They’ve done this every year, for 47 years. Fundraising was never an easy task. High school bands cost money. Fireworks cost a lot of money. Police support, security, generators, porta-potties, permits, tents, etc... you get the drift. Imagine throwing a picnic for 30,000 people. The bulk of the expenses was always covered by a minority of generous citizens, local sponsors and the dedicated Freedom Club. The only reward these contributors received was seeing a smile on a child’s face as she watched the parade and hearing the “oohs’” and “ahs” during the fireworks show. In the years I served on the board, we achieved solvency each year by managing costs, aggressively pursuing corporate sponsorships and grants, and partnering with civic organizations like the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs and Knights of Columbus. Without the support of each of these channels, the event would not have been a success. We maintained the reserve, even added to it modestly, to save for a time when the event would need it. That time has come. These participants and others like them need to be involved to ensure this tradition continues into the future. Rancho Bernardo is San Diego’s finest community. Events like the Spirit of the Fourth are sewn into the fabric of RB’s character and highlight its dedicated local businesses and loyal citizens. I encourage everyone who has enjoyed this celebration, for even just one of the past 47 years, to contribute to its success this year. Volunteer on the board or at the event. Donate to support the parade and fireworks. Become a Freedom Club member. Sponsor part of the event and align your business with a storied local tradition. Do something. Your community will thank you. DeMatteo is a Rancho Bernardo resident.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Lyles is a ‘blowhard’

Please publish more thoughtful, informative articles such as Mary Shepardson’s "Now and Then" column about Poway history and Rob Weinberg’s "Mr. Marketing," and fewer by blowhards like Dick Lyles saying "Hillary Clinton should be in prison." (Feb. 4) Gary Samad Poway

Lyles needs manners

Dick Lyles’ "Straight Talk"column makes me cringe every week, particularly his most recent column about Hillary Clinton. It’s obvious this guy is a Republican, but there is a way to share conservative opinions without being ugly, and Lyles certainly doesn’t know how. Suggesting the Democratic frontrunner go to prison is absurd. Lyles should go to prison for defamation of character. Why don’t you post an article right next to his with a liberal author? Certainly I’m not the only one who feels this way. Please, someone teach Mr. Lyles some manners. Peggy Schultz Poway

Replace Lyles

After working himself into a froth in last week’s "Straight Talk," Dick Lyles concludes his rant with the phrase "Give me a break." Couldn’t you, Mr. Editor, give him that break? Surely there are other voices from our community that deserve to be heard. Emily Fawcett 4S Ranch

Volunteer needed

As a grateful Rancho Bernardo resident, I have happily volunteered to repaint, repair and replace the eight Gatewood Hills neighborhood signs for maybe 30 years. However, retirement and relocation have arrived and a replacement volunteer is solicited to carry on this very visible community enhancement. Will a community-minded person(s) please step

Regarding Will Wooton’s Jan. 28 column, "Time to reboot American education": When I read Wooton’s column, I expect to find accuracy in the article. I read the first paragraph to learn "For over 175 years American children have been in the same public education system." As an educator, I know that this is not true. He references Horace Mann in 1837 enacting a set of standards "currently in use today." However, in his next paragraph, he states that in 1870 a collective set of standards was developed and adopted for all states. That might mean we have been using the same set of standards for 146 years, but of course, that isn’t true either. He asks the question, "What are we doing wrong? Basically everything. There really is not way to say it then" (he probably meant "than" but he was educated by the system) "to just call it what it is - broken down and outdated." Wooton bases this statement by our sad ranking in educational proficiency, 23rd. Unfortunately, there probably was not room in his article to tell us which list, chart or statistics for 2014 he used. He does cite one statistic: "Our testing scores are lower than 50 years ago and our dropout rate has risen." Of course, that’s not "The Stright Dope" either. I would be pleased to help Mr. Wooton write a more accurate assessment, because we do need to make changes and reallocate resources. One size does not fit all when you have severe poverty, several languages in one classroom. and not enough emphasis on reading. Prescott Jones Rancho Bernardo

CONSIDER THIS BY BARRY CRONIN

Cracking down on trespassing

I

think it would be safe to say we have seen something of a firestorm in both the news and blogosphere in response to recent military police enforcement operations to curtail illegal trespassing within the vast portion of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, east of the I-15. The response from the public has been decidedly mixed. While some of the comments and reporting have been favorable toward what the Marines are doing, most of it is not. These appear to be the three primary objections. One, “I have always come out here.” Two, “I never knew I was on a military base.” And three, “Why are they suddenly doing this now?” I could not help but notice little if anything was being mentioned as to “why” the military suddenly seemed so concerned over what we would be led to believe is nothing more than harmless and wholesome recreation. As the deputy police chief of that installation, and someone who has been involved with this issue since 2010, allow me to respond to those entirely understandable concerns. There is always another side to the story. First and foremost, this is not something new.

Trespassing has never been permitted. Military police began regular patrols in East Miramar back in October of 2010, initially more of a “fact finding” effort to identify precisely what kind activity was taking place “out there” in order to provide that information to the air station commanding officer in response to renewed interest by local community members for access rights to Stowe Trail/East Miramar. During the course of those patrols, some very disturbing things were discovered. The military police documented widespread evidence of vandalism, narcotics use, small arms fire and impromptu shooting ranges, along with camp grounds and unsafe fire pits. I know of at least one fire of suspicious origin that has occurred and military police have dismantled camps and impromptu dumps. Trespassers used power saws to fell trees in order to construct trail obstacles for mountain bikers. The abandoned old Atlas missile test site on base has been repeatedly vandalized and broken into. The air station Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) facility has also been vandalized. Vandalism and theft of expensive base signage is widespread and the military police find themselves constantly repairing perimeter signs,

many of which continue to be defaced, destroyed, or stolen. Perimeter fencing is pulled down and removed, presumably for recycling. From a combat readiness perspective, Miramar must automatically declare a “cease fire” on the rifle range every time mountain bikers are observed riding through the down range impact area. Each time this occurs, all training has to completely halt until military police can track down and remove the trespassers. This often takes hours as riders attempt to evade the military police. In addition to the potential deadly threat this represents to the riders, thousands of dollars in taxpayer’s treasure are wasted in lost training time. A large portion of East Miramar was also used following World War II as a training area for artillery and mortar firing and unexploded ordnance is periodically discovered. Recently, a workman digging a trench uncovered a Korean War-era hand grenade. There are significant environmental concerns as well. A number of abandoned military sites are currently undergoing environmental clean-up. The air station is home to some of the county’s largest numbers of delicate vernal pools and environmentally protected species, as well as some of the last remaining oak trees. Whether deliberately or otherwise, trespassers continue to disrupt these environmentally sensitive areas throughout East Miramar. While Miramar will continue to do everything it can to be a good neighbor and proud member of the San Diego community, the fact of the matter remains unchanged. Miramar is an active military installation, not a federal park recreational area. Cronin is a Poway resident and the assistant police chief at MCAS Miramar.

New community center —The current community center and the senior center in Community Park are fine as they are. Poway does not need a huge, new and expensive center. Outrageous pay raises — How many employees of private industries receive the kinds of raises City Council members and the mayor reward themselves with? "Being on the council is a 24- hour-a -day job." I thought John Mullin knew that before he decided to run for the seat. For City Council members, based upon analyses of above situation, as their employer, I disapprove the proposed raises for all. One should not run for government office to get rich. A top Poway Unified School District administrator has announced her retirement. Tracy Hogarth, the district’s associate superintendent for personnel support services, will be stepping down on June 30 after a 35-year career in education. She manages a department that includes risk management, workers compensation, payroll, human resources, insurance benefits, and collaborates with the Personnel Commission. Hogarth is also the chief negotiator for the district with its employees’ bargaining units. “Like her dedication to our district, her depth of knowledge and skills in the areas of personnel management is extraordinary,” said Superintendent Tracy Hogarth John Collins.“Her genuine concern for employees and the organization, her calm purposeful manner, and her loyalty and unwavering commitment to PUSD will be missed.” Hogarth started her career as a teacher and principal, then joined Poway Unified School District in 1996 as principal at Tierra Bonita Elementary. She came to the Personnel Support Services department in 2004. She was promoted to executive director in 2010 then associate superintendent in 2012.

Arrests made at Poway Walmart Three suspects were arrested Feb. 4 for theft after being spotted allegedly stealing from the Poway Walmart Supercenter at 13425 Community Road. The three men, whose names have not been released, are said to be from Mira Mesa. At about 11:40 a.m., a Walmart loss prevention employee spotted the suspects allegedly stealing items and alerted the Poway

sheriff’s station. Responding deputies contacted the suspects as they left the store. One of the suspects was in possession of an unloaded handgun, said Sgt. Dave Cheever of the Poway Sheriff’s station. All three were arrested and were being processed on Thursday afternoon. The items, which totalled less than $100, were recovered, Cheever said.

WaterSmart landscaping class will begin Feb. 17 The San Diego County Water Authority and member agencies will hold a series of free classes starting Feb. 17 that teach homeowners steps to designing and implementing successful WaterSmart landscape makeovers. These free hands-on WaterSmart Landscape Makeover Series classes are led by local landscaping professionals and are designed to help homeowners convert high-water-use turf areas to beautiful WaterSmart landscapes. Attendees will learn about soil, project planning and design, turf removal, plant selection, irrigation, efficiency and rainwater harvesting. The comprehensive and award-winning series includes four classes held every two weeks and concludes with homeowners working with experts to create personalized landscape makeover plans. Preregistration and a commitment to attend all four classes in the series is required. The first class is in Clairemont. “Knowing how to combine WaterSmart plants with efficient irrigation systems is critical for designing attractive landscapes that use significantly less water,” said Mark Weston, chair of the Water Authority’s Board of Directors. Participants from previous makeover series reported on average replacing more than 1,000 square feet of turf and achieving landscape water savings of 58 percent. For details about landscape classes and other water conservation resources, go to WaterSmartSD.org. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.

READER LOVE STORIES

‘It was then I saw the angel’ BY HAL ALTENBERG In 1492, Columbus discovered America. On Columbus Day in 1947, I discovered Althea. Yes, it was ‘Love at First Sight’! I was a 19-year-old Army Air Force veteran attending Northwestern University. Althea was a 17-year-old high school senior. We both had part-time jobs at Sears Roebuck. I received a phone call from a girl with an angelic voice requesting a tricycle be brought down to the Toy Department.Quickly, I hopped on the freight elevator wishing it would move faster so he could meet this girl with the angelic voice. It was then that I saw the angel; a beautiful blonde, smiling girl with sparkling blue eyes. She was wearing a Chinese red suit, white blouse, Bobby socks and penny loafer shoes. Immediately I realized I was looking at the girl who would become my wife. Yes, it was love at first sight! Our eyes never lost contact as we exchanged names. My heart was beating fast as I phoned Althea, asking if she would join me after work for a chocolate soda at the Andes Candy store just a block away. Althea’s answer was “Yes.” I had just enough money for one chocolate soda with two straws. A bicycle was my transportation for visits to Althea’s home. The song “I Can’t

By overlooking possibility of need for Long Term Health Care

LONG-TERM CARE is the #1 Financial Risk faces by retirees. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, at least 70 percent of people over 65 will eventually need long-term care, either at home or in a nursing home, and that can be very expensive. The average stay for a woman entering a nursing home is almost four years; if she’s in a semiprivate room that costs in San Diego is about $375,000. For married couples, the chances that one spouse will need long-term care rises to 91%.

Still living the fairy tale

BY JOAN BRADLEY Mike and I were high school sweethearts, as some people would say. We found each other at 17 years old. We each found our best friend, our other half, our soul mate. Mike was captain of the football and baseball teams. He was a leader the guys naturally followed. Both guys and gals were drawn to his laughter and love of life, making everything around him fun! I was a preacher’s daughter, choir singer, tennis player, happy and fun loving, but not known by those who ran in the top circles of school. In my circle of friends we laughingly called ourselves ‘the invisibles’ of the school. Mike’s best friend Larry had a car and pursued my older sister, coming over to our house often, trying to win her. Of course Mike, having no car, would be at our house by default, as a passenger. While my sis was being romanced, Mike and I spent sunshiny days playing chess, sports and games; also finding in each other, a passion for God. My Dad would only allow double dates, so off we went with my sis and Larry. What a blast we had! We two sisters married two best friends. Mike and I were 18 years old when we married. Growing up together, falling down and getting up again. Starting to raise children still being teens ourselves. Having God as our guide and a good sense of humor made life sweet, and hilariously fun while

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

ON THE RISE Eagles’ program has come a long way BY TERRY MONAHAN othing about the 2013-14 girls basketball season at Maranatha Christian is worth remembering. Yet, every painful detail about that season that includes being winless in Ocean League play and just 6-15 for the season serves as the backdrop for the amazing turnaround that the Eagles are attempting to finish off this year. Maranatha is winding down on a regular season that may include not only the most wins since a 17-8 campaign in 2011-12 but also the first league championship for the program. The turnaround coincides with Nate Jackson taking over the coaching duties halfway through that disastrous season in which the Eagles were in the discussion as to which team is the worst in San Diego County. Look at their losses. Some of the worst scores were 72-9, 63-12, 60-13, 66-8, 43-9, 45-9 and one game was an embarrassing 14-6. The Eagles scored 364 points in 21 games but surrendered 725 points on defense. "I couldn’t wait for that season to end,’’ junior forward Julia Lawrenz, then a freshman, said. "Now I hate to see this season end at all.’’ Jackson, 34, thought his three-year plan to resurrect the program was a sound one. It’s just paid dividends a year earlier than he expected. "I knew we wanted to contend for a league title, which this school had never won,’’ Jackson said. "But I didn’t expect us to do this well this quickly. "We had to change the culture of the program. They’ve worked so hard to make this happen by playing in the offseason, going to camps, finding a passion for the game. "They used to be just girls playing basketball. Now they have become basketball players.’’ Jackson joined forces with Jim Wilkinson, a former coach from Pennsylvania who retired and moved out to Rancho Bernardo. Wilkinson offered his vast knowledge of basketball in a conversation that first

Several local standouts gathered at the San Diego Hall of Champions to sign college scholarships in football, soccer and boys water polo. Among those in attendance from Poway were football players Paris Tulafano (Western New Mexico University) and Conner Kirkegaard (Air Force). Tulafono is a 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive and defense lineman. Kirkegaard is regarded as one of the top long snappers in the country. Those two were joined by girls soccer players Tea Carrillo (Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo) and Taylor Richards (Winona State) and boys soccer player Miguel Berry (USD). Rancho Bernardo girls soccer stars Amanda Roy and Samantha Lee will continue their careers in college. Roy will be playing at UC Riverside, while Lee will play at Clairemont McKenna. Broncos’ boys soccer player Jacob Lindberg will continue playing at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

"They’re more active in other things on campus, they’re school leaders and it’s not a pain to come to the gym like it was.’’ Just ask Lawrenz about the transformation. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Nighthawks’ Moul refuses to go unnoticed

Senior forward will play soccer at Florida State

BY TERRY MONAHAN It’s easy to overlook Doriana Moul, a 5-foot-2 forward on the Del Norte girls soccer team. Opposing defenders do it all the time until she scores a goal or assists on a goal for the Nighthawks. Then they notice. When Moul, pronounced Mole, was sidelined in both her sophomore and junior years, her teammates missed her a lot. Trying to kick the ball, Moul suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in a game in the early stages of the 2013-14 season. “Two girls hit my leg and I heard a loud pop,’’ said the senior. “Worst pain of my life. “I’d never even heard of an ACL before that moment.’’ A year later, she took a step, turned and she heard that same pop in the same knee again. “I found out the first surgery wasn’t done right,’’ Moul said. “That one really bothered me. I kept asking myself ‘Why me?’ “Every day of rehab is super painful. I don’t want to do that ever again. “I kept imagining my end-goal and that got me through it. I love this sport too much to just give it up because rehab hurts.’’ Moul, who tore the meniscus ligament in her right knee before the ACL woes, is finally back in the Nighthawks’ lineup for senior year. She’s leading the team with 10 goals and four assists as Del Norte, despite a 3-2 loss last week to San Marcos that snapped a six-game winning streak, still sits atop the Avocado East League with a 5-1 record to go with a 9-6-2 overall record. In fact, Del Norte is the only team in the league with a winning overall record this year.

CAM BUKER

Del Norte High soccer player Dori Moul.

Moul gravitated to soccer as a means of escaping a bad neighborhood and a rugged family life that involved some physical abuse. She found a sanctuary from her troubles and the ordinary stress of school. “I’ve gotten a lot out of soccer,’’ said Moul, who plays travel ball with San Diego Surf. “Without it, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. “The ACLs taught me I have to take better care of my body. It also taught me to put school ahead of soccer. I’m more balanced now than I was. “I’m very happy with who I am and where I’m at, and that’s because of soccer.’’ Moul will continue her soccer career this fall at Florida State where she hopes to reconnect with a half brother who remained behind when the family left the Sunshine State for San Diego. “The first three years here went so slow and now I’m just weeks from graduating,’’ Moul said. “Senior year has gone ridiculously fast. I barely remember freshman year and I thought freshman, sophomore and junior years took forever.’’ Moul hopes to continue confounding defenders at the collegiate level despite her lack of size around the goal. “I think defenders overlook me because I’m so short,’’ she said. “Their faces change when I get them for a goal. That look on their face is, I think, hilarious. “I love challenges. That’s why I tried basketball and cheerleading for a while. I need a push to satisfy that urge.’’ Like rehabilitating ACL injuries in back-to-back seasons. Monahan is a freelance writer.

“She still has the drive to get to the goal,’’ Del Norte coach Gary Rossi said. “She’s not the kind of kid who tells you how good she is. She likes to lead by quiet example, but her drive is intense. “She’s never asked for anything special because of the injuries. She just wants to play.’’

Top-Rated Electrophysiologist Explains New Treatments for Atrial Fibrillation – “A Fib” Arrhythmias, or irregular heart rhythms known as “A Fib,” are among the most common types of heart problems and can occur in virtually anyone. An abnormal heart rhythm can mean the heart beats too fast or too slow, skips a beat, or “flutters.” These symptoms may progress if untreated. As Medical Director of the Electrophysiology Lab at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, Dr. Navinder Sawhney specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of these conditions. Since 2013, Dr. Sawhney has also treated patients in his clinical practice within Arch Health Partners’ Cardiology group in Escondido. Dr. Sawhney was attracted by the close network of Primary Care and Specialty Care providers and by

the opportunity and resources to start a new program in Electrophysiology. Dr. Sawhney is a graduate of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, with specialized training in Cardiology and Electrophysiology from the University of California, San Diego, where he served as Assistant Professor of Cardiology for several years before joining Arch Health Partners. He is board-certified in both Cardiology and Cardiac Electophysiology. His primary role within the Arch Health Partners Cardiology team is to take care of patients with heart rhythm disorders, “A Fib” in particular. This condition currently affects about one percent of the population in the United States--over 2.5 million people, although as Dr. Sawhney says, “those are just the ones who are being diagnosed.” He believes many more people are affected without knowing the basis of the condition or because they have not sought out a specialist. For example, symptoms as simple as a “racing heart” may not send a person to the Cardiologist and are often attributed to anxiety, nervousness, or may be misdiagnosed as a panic attack since the timing of a normal in-office test may not reveal what’s really going on at home. Wearing a heart monitor at home may help, but with intermittent symptoms, Dr. Sawhney explains that it may

still be difficult to catch an A Fib episode, depending on the frequency of symptoms in a given patient. Dr. Sawhney believes that anyone with A Fib should seek out treatment for these symptoms, as the condition can persist and progress, and in doing so the heart itself may “remodel” to accommodate the condition – resulting in structural changes, including fibrosis, enlargement of the heart, and other conditions that are harder to control with medication. He stresses that it’s best to detect and be referred to a specialist for better treatment options, either with medication or newer options such as cardiac catheter ablation, a special focus for Dr. Sawhney in both the clinic and in his research. Cardiac catheter ablation may be recommended where medications may not be the best option for patients taking other medications or for patients who have tried medication and not found them effective. The procedure is minimally invasive and may slow the progression of the condition and its more serious effects, such as heart failure and stroke. Both Primary Care physicians and Cardiologists can refer a specialist in Electrophysiology. According to Dr. Sawhney, “It’s a highly technical field...the technology is always changing and improving. We use a

lot of electro-anatomical mapping now; we can reconstruct what the heart pathways look like in 3D and use that to navigate within the heart.” Dr. Sawhney’s clinical practice allows him to help patients manage A Fib and other conditions, such as atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardias, ventricular tachycardia, as well as implantation and maintenance of pacemakers and the use of defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy devices. He utilizes the most current techniques and is also leading the program on left atrial appendage closure to help prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. Dr. Sawhney is actively involved in clinical research and has led investigations on the optimal approach to catheter-based ablation of atrial fibrillation and the optimal programming for cardiac resynchronization therapy devices. He has published numerous articles and written several textbook chapters on arrhythmia management. Arch Health Partners is a non-profit, multispecialty medical group located in San Diego, CA, affiliated with Palomar Health, with locations in Poway, Escondido, Rancho Peñasquitos, 4S Ranch and Ramona. SDMT’s “Ragtime” is a powerful, emotional musical Playing at the Spreckels Theatre through Feb. 21 BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK A powerful, emotional and topically-relevant musical about individuals’ struggles to achieve the American Dream is playing at the Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego through Feb. 21. San Diego Musical Theatre is presenting the Tony Award-winning “Ragtime: The Musical,” a not-to-be-missed production. Its 41-member cast excels in portraying the pain and heartache of the downtrodden. Jay Donnell (as Coalhouse Walker Jr.), Nicole Pryor (Sarah), Carolyn Agan (Mother) and Louis Pardo (Tateh) are among those who deserve mention for their beautiful, rich and powerful voices, and their believable, heart-felt portrayals. By combining historical figures with fictional characters, “Ragtime” presents a look at America and the American experience via three families’ perspectives. It is a history lesson and spark for contemplation on how things have changed — or not — in society over the past century. The first is a white, upper-class family living a privileged life in New Rochelle. They own a fireworks company that also makes patriotic items. They are initially oblivious to anyone’s life that does not match their own or exists outside of their sheltered sphere. Known not by names, but their familial positions — Father,

Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Jay Donnell) and Sarah (Nicole Pryor) sing about the potential for their infant son’s future in San Diego Musical Theatre’s “Ragtime: The Musical.” It is running through Feb. 21 at the Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego. Mother, The Little Boy, Grandfather and Mother’s Younger Brother — they figuratively lived their life through rose-colored glasses until Mother’s surprising discovery in the garden that opens her and some family members’ eyes to the world beyond their home. In stark contrast is the family of Sarah,

Coalhouse and their infant son, part of the black community in Harlem. There ragtime music is popular and ambitious individuals, such as pianist Coalhouse, are trying to move up and achieve the American Dream. But as he finds out in a devastatingly hard and life-changing way, legal justice is not available

to people like him in early 1900s New York due to bigotry, prejudice and jealousy. The third family is Tateh and his little daughter, poor Jewish immigrants from Latvia who arrive in New York City with high hopes and determination, but whose American dreams are quickly dashed. They learn that even though they live in the land of opportunity, external constraints make it practically impossible for immigrants to succeed in the U.S. or have a similar quality-of-life to the one they left. Though the musical spans the early 1900s to the beginning of World War I, its themes — including black Americans clashing with law enforcement, immigrants struggling for success and workers receiving low wages while companies reap large profits — are as relevant today as a century ago. There are many memorable musical numbers, most notably the title song that opens the almost three-hour show; the emotional “Wheels of a Dream,” “Your Daddy’s Son,” “Till We Reach That Day” and “Back to Before;” and high-energy dance number “Gettin’ Ready Rag.” When it debuted on Broadway in 1998, “Ragtime” received 13 Tony Award nominations. Its four wins included Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. It is based on the 1975 novel “Ragtime” by E. L. Doctorow. “Ragtime: The Musical” can be seen at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays through Feb. 21 at the Spreckels Theatre, 121 Broadway in downtown San Diego. Tickets are $40 to $70, with discounts for youths (16 and under), seniors, students and groups. To purchase, go to sdmt.org or call 858-560-5740.

Dine Locally! Chin’s Rancho Bernardo offers traditional Chinese Szechwan cuisine and seafood in an excellent dining atmosphere. Established in 1984, Chin’s has stood out among Chinese restaurants by using only the finest ingredients. Chin’s offers traditional house specialties such as the highly recommended Hon Hon Shrimp: lightly braised jumbo shrimp sautéed in a sweet and pungent sauce; or Tangerine Crispy Beef: chunks of crispy beef sautéed with tangerine peel and chili peppers in a chef’s special sauce. Chin’s also offers several vegetarian choices. Lunch choices are as varied and exciting as the dinner menu. Try their Hot Braised Delight: a combination of shrimp and sliced chicken breast cooked in a homemade chili tomato sauce, or their Lin Ko Steak: tender sliced steak

sautéed with onions in a black pepper steak sauce. Their prices are very reasonable and portions are large. Szechwan cuisine is diverse and popular, having been described by the four words: fresh, fragrant spicy and hot, though Chin’s offers many milder, flavorful options for those who don’t prefer spicy or hot. Chin’s Rancho Bernardo is located at 15721 Bernardo Heights Parkway, in the Sprout’s Center. READER LOVE STORIES

A memorable 17 days BY CONNIE SCHWARTZ

Jim and I met in July 1967. I was rehearsing in the recording studio with the Revivaltime Summer Choir. Jim had just returned from Vietnam and was on his way to his next assignment at Ft. Harrison, Indiana. His friend was supposed to have lined him up with a date, but had not done it. His friend was also rehearsing and said to Jim, "Come with me to Revivaltime practice; you’ll find a pretty girl there." Well, there weren’t any "pretty girls," so Jim asked me! (That is our personal joke now.) We dated for three days, then Jim went to his new assignment. We met

up in St. Louis while I was there for a friend’s wedding in September. Jim and an Army buddy drove the 500 miles on a weekend leave to visit me in Missouri, then we had Thanksgiving at another friend’s place. There he

proposed and I accepted. Jim found out he was leaving for Germany in February, so we married in December. That was 48 years ago. We totaled up our time together from first date to wedding day: 17 days!

Long distance love BY TOM COX

I met my college sweetheart one week before graduation in May of 2008. Out of all the romantic places I could have taken her for our first date, we decided to go for a run. To this day, I remember every minute of that run and remember feeling as though I knew Stephanie my whole life. One week after our first date we were forced to try a long distance relationship because I moved to San Diego for the summer. Stephanie and I always say we fell in love over the phone. We spoke on the phone for hours every day and fell in love with in a matter of weeks. I moved back to Chico after a few months, and the rest is history. Stephanie and I got married in 2010. We have been fortunate enough to travel the world together, build our careers together and

THE HOT SARDINES

READER LOVE STORIES

A walk on a moon-lit beach Friday Feb. 19 8:00pm

The Hot Sardines don’t just relive the Roaring Twenties – they re-invent them! With a list of influences that includes Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Ray Charles and Prince, and a live show that has been called“unforgettably wild” and“consistently electrifying,” the Hot Sardines are, simply put, your next favorite band.

BY SKIP DARYLMPLE Carol was on vacation in St. Thomas with her best friend, both having just gone through divorces. I was on vacation with a good buddy and we both were going through divorces. My friend Chick and I went for a walk on Moonlight Beach and heard two girls make a lot of noise — obviously having fun — on rafts in the ocean. On our return we noticed them sitting on their blanket. We walked up introduced ourselves, and the rest was history. Turned out Carol

and I both lived in Baltimore, Kim and Chick both in the Tampa area. Both couples dated for about three years and now, 28 years later, Carol and I have been married for 25 years, the last 22 living in Poway, where we

have raised four children, all PHS grads. (Kim and Chick have been together living in Tampa for all that time too!) So today, when people ask us how we met, we tell them we found each other on a moonlit beach!

BY JOE SHEA In the summer of 1986 I found that love at first sight really does exist. After a day of delivering beer, I walked into a room at my work to balance my accounts and saw an unfamiliar and very pretty young woman who was helping out the ladies who checked in our paperwork. We said “hi” and looked at each other just a little too long to be polite and yet not long enough to be rude. When she left the room I immediately asked my favorite check-in lady, “Who was that?” and found out that it was her daughter, just doing a little summer work before the school year started. I didn’t think that she could

Joe and Teresa Shea (then) be interested in me, but after a few encouraging conversations I managed to get her to come play volleyball with me and we somehow nourished the spark into a small flame. Over the years we’ve spent a lot of time and energy keeping that flame alive, sometimes getting burnt fingers or breathing smoke, but mostly so happy to feel the warmth.

Joe and Teresa Shea (now) Soon Teresa and I will celebrate our 28th anniversary and then summer will remind us that it’s been 30 years since we met and fell in love. We have daughters of our own now and a life with a hundred responsibilities, but when we take a walk holding hands, we’re just two people who got a chance at love and didn’t let it get away.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case 00000005386750. DID YOU KNOW...? A million dollars’ worth of $100 bills weighs only 10kg (22 lb).

SAVVY SENIOR BY JIM MILLER

Choosing a hospice care program Dear Savvy Senior, Can you offer any information on hospice care, how to choose a good provider, and whether Medicare covers it? My grandmother has terminal cancer and wants to die at home, if possible. Grieving Granddaughter Dear Grieving, Hospice can be a wonderful option in the last months of life because it offers a variety of services, not only to those who are dying, but also to those left behind. Here’s what you should know.

What hospice offers

Hospice care is a unique service that provides medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support to people who are in the last stages of a terminal illness – it does not speed up or slow down the process of dying. Hospice’s goal is to simply keep the patient as comfortable and pain-free as possible, with loved ones nearby until death. The various services provided by a hospice program comes from a team of professionals that works together to accommodate all the patients’ end-of-life needs. The team typically includes hospice doctors that will work with the primary physician and family members to draft up a care plan; nurses who dispense medication for pain control; home care aids that attend to personal needs like eating and bathing; social workers who help the patient and the family prepare for end of life; clergy members who provide spiritual counseling, if desired; and volunteers that fill a variety of niches, from sitting with the patient to helping clean and maintain their property. Some hospices even offer massage or music therapy, and nearly all provide bereavement services for relatives and short-term inpatient respite care to give family caregivers a break. Most hospice patients receive care in their own home. However, hospice will go wherever the patient is – hospital, nursing home or assisted living residence. Some even have their own facility to use as an option. To receive hospice, your grandmother must get a referral from her physician stating that their life expectancy is six months or less.

It’s also important to know that home-based hospice care does not mean that a hospice nurse or volunteer is in the home 24 hours a day. Services are based on need and/or what you request. Hospice care can also be stopped at anytime if your grandmother’s health improves or if she decides to re-enter cure-oriented treatments.

How to choose

The best time to prepare for hospice and consider your options is before it’s necessary, so you’re not making decisions during a stressful time. There are more than 5,500 hospice programs in the U.S., so depending on where you live, you may have several options from which to choose. To locate a good hospice in your area, ask your grandmother’s doctor or the discharge planner at your local hospital for a referral, call your state hospice organization (see hospicefoundation.org/hospice-directory for contact information), or search online at sites like the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization at nhpco.org. When choosing, look for an established hospice that has been operating for a few years and one that is certified by Medicare. To help you select one, the American Hospice Foundation provides a list of questions to ask at 16HospiceQuestions.us.

Who pays

Medicare covers all aspects of hospice care and services for its beneficiaries. There is no deductible for hospice services although there may be a very small co-payment – such as $5 for each prescription drug for pain and symptom control, or a 5 percent share for inpatient respite care. Medicaid also covers hospice in most states, as do most private health insurance plans. For more information, see the “Medicare Hospice Benefits” online booklet at medicare.gov/pubs/pdf/02154.pdf. And if you have financial questions or concerns, talk to your hospice provider. Most hospices offer financial assistance to help families in need. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Bank phone scam targets San Diego The District Attorney’s Office is warning residents of San Diego about a phone scam where crooks are calling people to solicit their personal bank information. The scammers may identify themselves as employees of Bank of America (B of A) and allegedly need to confirm their account information because of some “irregularities,” asking for your account number and other details. The caller may leave a message and when victims call

back, the phone is answered by someone stating they are in “financial services” or may identify themselves as a bank employee. If victims decline to provide information, the caller may become aggressive, demanding and intimidating. If you or someone you know received such a call and actually provided information, contact your financial institution immediately as well as the various credit bureau agencies to place a freeze on your credit.

What to know about applying for a mortgage (StatePoint) Although homeownership doesn’t make good financial sense for everyone, some experts say you may be qualified to purchase real estate without realizing it. “Factor in today’s very low interest rates and current home prices, and affordable mortgages are within reach for many qualified borrowers who may have been hesitant to enter the market,” says Christina Boyle, senior vice president and head of single-family sales and relationship management at Freddie Mac. After receiving your application, along with the required paycheck stubs, W-2s, bank statements and

tax returns, lenders will evaluate the four Cs: • Capacity: Your income, employment history, savings, and monthly debt payments — such as credit card charges and other financial obligations — help lenders

determine whether you have the means to take on a mortgage comfortably. • Capital: The money and savings you have on hand, plus investments, properties, and other salable assets. • Collateral: The value of the home that you plan to buy. • Credit: Your bill- and debt-paying record. More loan application tips can be found at myhome.freddiemac.com. “You have choices, so interview lenders to compare costs,” says Boyle, who also recommends getting the process started early. “Getting pre-approved for a loan can help you shop with confidence.”

CB in RB raises funds to help save Webb Lake Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Rancho Bernardo office combined good food with a good cause by raising $1,750 for the Save Webb Lake Fund at their recent Taco Thursday event, held at their office at 16789 Bernardo Center Drive. In addition to the funds raised at the event, the brokerage donated $250 to bring the total raised for the cause to $2,000. “Taco plates were $8 each and every plate came with two carne asada tacos with rice and beans. There were also drinks available, and the event featured local beer from Second Chance Brewery,” said Linda Harbert, manager of the Rancho Bernardo office. “Two of our agents, Mike Amarillas and Bret Geernaert, have backgrounds in the restaurant business and were excited to donate their time and cooking abilities to a worthy

cause.” The Save Webb Lake Fund has been raising money to keep the lake in Rancho Bernardo’s Webb Park. The lake is in danger of being drained and bulldozed due to the drought and high cost of water. Save Webb Lake Fund project has proposed a way to save the lake and the green lawns and landscape that surround the lake, while reducing water use and water costs by more than 90 percent by drilling a well for the approximate cost of over $85,000. The proposed well will save more than 7 million gallons of city water each year and save Webb Park for everyone in the community to enjoy. Because the project has raised enough money for the well, the $2,000 that the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Rancho Bernardo office raised will be used for landscaping and maintenance.

Cafe Merlot can help you make a healthy change BY EMILY SORENSEN Looking to live a healthier lifestyle? Cafe Merlot can help you make the change. The restaurant, located within the Bernardo Winery at 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte, celebrated its 10th anniversary on Jan. 1. “We appreciate the fact that we’ve been here (at the Bernardo Winery) for ten years,” said Toni Kraft, owner of Cafe Merlot. “We’re really humbled and happy.” Kraft said that other than a few employees who have moved on, most of her staff are the same as when the cafe first opened. “We’re a cohesive family,” she said. While Cafe Merlot may be a restaurant, it also offers cooking classes, which Kraft said have been making the move to being more holistic. “We’re advocates for people who want to live healthy,” said Kraft. Cafe Merlot is partners with Live Well San Diego, an initiative started by the City of San Diego to encourage its citizens to live healthier lives, and Kraft said that this partnership has led her and her staff to shake up their business and their lives. “We looked introspectively at ourselves
