BY EMILY SORENSEN After several previous failures to agree on increases to fees for the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, the Poway City Council approved of moving forward with several fee increases for community groups renting space and time at the PCPA at Tuesday night’s meeting. The fees, which include small increases over several years to the facility rental fee, staffing fees and ticketing fees, will take effect in July of 2017, to make things fair for parties who have already agreed to rent space at the PCPA. The fee increases for community groups are aimed to be concurrent with new agreements that are being negotiated with the Poway Unified School District and Poway OnStage to raise fees for those groups as well. The council has struggled in the past to find ways to lower the large city subsidy needed to keep the PCPA open and running. The issue was last discussed in November, when the council voted 4-1 not to proceed with a proposal to increase the fees charged to non-profit and for-profit use of the center by between 25 and 35 percent. The plan approved at the meeting Tuesday night includes six “phases,” some of which may be implemented concurrently. These include fee increases to community groups renting the center; reviewing the use agreement and cost-sharing formula with PUSD to determine what adjustments need to be made; making similar adjustments to the agreement with Poway OnStage; researching and implementing tactics to reduce the costs of heating, cooling and lighting the PCPA; implement supplemental revenue streams that will offset the expenses for the facility; and incorporate dining opportunities for patrons, which will enhance their experience as well as bring in an additional source of revenue. All six phases are aimed to be implemented in fiscal year 18 except for SEE FEES, A11

Watch for impact of initiatives, experts warn State of the Region Luncheon held in Rancho Bernardo BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Paying sharp attention to initiatives on the June and November ballots will be critical since items voters support — or not — could have unexpected, long-term consequences, according to government officials. “Don’t get proposition fatigue when going through your ballot,” advised Helen Robbins-Meyer, chief administrative officer for the County of San Diego, when speaking to the 150 attendees at the Feb. 10 State of the Region Luncheon in Rancho Bernardo. North San Diego Business Chamber organized the event. Robbins-Meyer said she does not foresee much change in who gets elected at local, state and federal

levels. But propositions and legislative bills are an entirely different story. She said Proposition 47, passed in 2014, is a good example. It reclassified some non-violent felony crimes as misdemeanors, especially drug crimes. Since it did not increase public safety resources, Robbins-Meyer said a long-term impact on crime rates is starting to materialize and local criminal activity has crept up in the past year. “We did that to ourselves, voters,” she said. Among 68 initiatives circulating across the state for potential ballot inclusion this year, she said some to watch include one on legalizing recreational marijuana, another on spending $350 million in SEE INITIATIVES, A10

Parents band together to celebrate Lunar New Year
ANOTHER RETIREMENT The second of three associate superintendents at the Poway Unified School District has announced her retirement. Malliga Tholandi, who heads business support services, will retire at the end of the school year. Her announcement followed a Feb. 9 board meeting where approval of her new contract, along with the other two associate superintendents, was again tabled by the board. Last week Tracy Hogarth, the district’s associate superintendent for personnel support services, also announced her retirement.
BY EMILY SORENSEN A group of parents and volunteers came together to help several schools in the Poway Unified School District celebrate the Lunar New Year. The parents, who are members of the PUSD Parents Group, an organization that aims to strengthen the voice of the community, brought the Lunar New Year celebration to seven elementary schools and two high schools in the district for a week starting Monday, Feb. 8. “It’s been amazing this year,” said Cathy Hou, who led organizing the Lunar New Year event and also leads the PUSD Parents Group’s library team. “Parents have been supportive (of the event).” Jessica Xu, another member of the PUSD Parents Group who worked on organizing and implementing the Lunar New Year celebrations, said the group put on the event
Students at Park Village Elementary School view Lunar New Year decorations in their school's library. for two reasons. The first was for cultural awareness. “Asian is the second largest racial group in PUSD. The media seems to have no idea of this fact. The overwhelming support from the parent community has demonstrated a strong desire to change such invisibility,” said Xu in an email. The second reason was to raise support for a potential Mandarin
immersion program at Adobe Bluffs Elementary. The seven elementary schools that held Lunar New Year events were Stone Ranch, Park Village, Deer Canyon, Adobe Bluffs, Monterey Ridge, Canyon View and Design 39 Campus. Westview High and Rancho Bernardo High schools also held Lunar New Year celebrations. Parents donated SEE LUNAR, A18

Group holds rally at district office over racial inequality BY EMILY SORENSEN The National Action Network’s San Diego chapter held a press conference and rally at the Poway Unified School District’s district office on Feb. 10, where a small assembled group chanted “no justice, no peace” and called for an end to racial inequality in the district. The group, which was led by the Rev. Shane Harris, who is head of the San Diego chapter of the National Action Network, included Chris and Kim Garnier, who have clashed several times with the school district over issues of perceived racial inequality and have been frequent critics of the district and Supt. John Collins. “We are not going to stand for the inequality of the Poway Unified School District,” said Harris at the press conference. “We want justice. If we don’t get justice, then you will get no peace.” Harris said he and the National Action Network, which was founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, are tired of seeing minorities being discounted and forgotten about in schools. “We are standing for racial equality in the school system,” he said. Harris said he was calling out to the district for a meeting, especially with School Board President Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff, who he said he has reached out to many times and never received a response. Harris said he will do “whatever it takes” to get the district to meet with him and the Garniers, even if it meant bringing in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). “The National Action Network is not going to stand for inequality,” said Harris. Harris said his main focus is the Poway
Unified School District, but will also be working to fight racial inequality across school districts in North County, including in Escondido and Oceanside. Harris and the NAN will be holding a community forum focused on discussing racial inequality in education in North County sometime in the next 2 to 3 months. The forum will seek input not just from fellow black community members, but all minorities. The press conference ended with the participants walking to the district office and demanding that O’Connor-Ratcliff meet with Harris and the NAN. Harris said the demand was a success and he would give O’Connor-Ratcliff a couple of weeks to respond, before returning with even more people. Chris Garnier also spoke at the press conference and rally, saying the biggest thing he and his family were standing for is inclusion. “We need inclusion (in the school district),” he said. Garnier’s fight against the district began in late 2014, after he was temporarily banned from volunteering at Painted Rock Elementary School, where his two young children attended. Garnier was accused by district officials of making verbal threats against school employees and exhibiting menacing behavior. In February 2015, the ban from the school campus was extended to three years. Garnier denied the allegations and said he was being discriminated against because he is an African-American. Christine Paik, spokeswoman and communications manager for PUSD, said SEE RALLY, A18

‘Walk for Animals’ is Saturday in Escondido BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK You can help animals in need by putting on your comfy shoes and heading over to Escondido on Saturday for San Diego Humane Society’s annual Walk for Animals. It will begin with registration, a pancake breakfast (for walkers) and entertainment at 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 in Kit Carson Park, 3333 Bear Valley Parkway in Escondido. At 9 a.m. walkers will have two route options, a one-mile trail that Special Events Manager Delma Garcia said is a great option for those pushing a stroller or wheelchair (with proper tires for dirt), or a two-mile trail she called “more moderate and more strenuous.” Both options include sidewalk and dirt trail portions. Throughout the morning and until noon there will also be free dog activities and a Vendor Village featuring various items and services. Registration is $40 for adults, $20 for children (ages 17 and under) and $10 for “cat nappers” — individuals who raise money for the event, but not attending. All registered participants — including cat nappers — will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Participants may register in advance at sdhumane.org or at the event. For questions, call 619-243-3469. Those who want to just participate in the interactive activities starting at 10:15 a.m. and browse the Vendor Village may enter for free. There will be information on the San Diego Humane Society’s various services and components that do more than help 30,000 animals be adopted each year. Garcia said in all, around 55,000 animals are impacted through programs, including pet assistance therapy, its law enforcement team, Project Wildlife and assistance to seniors and low-income individuals so they can keep their pets. “We ask only that you bring well-behaved, leashed dogs due to our permit,” Garcia said. “(But) occasionally we get a surprise guest, like goats last year.” Garcia said there will be a handful of adoptable animals plus information on the adoption process at the San Diego

Humane Society’s Escondido, San Diego and Oceanside campuses, plus its mobile adoption throughout the county. “We invite everybody to come,” Garcia said. “It’s a unique opportunity to see the different components San Diego Humane Society provides.” She said the goal is to raise $172,500 through the Escondido walk, a little more than what was raised last year. Proceeds will support all humane society programs and services. Those unable to attend on Saturday have will have another opportunity when a similar walk is held on May 7 at Liberty Station in Point Loma.

FROM INITIATIVES, A1 public money on a new football stadium for the Chargers, a 1/2 cent sales tax increase through SANDAG for transportation, an initiative dedicating City of San Diego money for years in the future toward infrastructure and minimum wage increases. Regarding the minimum wage initiative, Robbins-Meyer said “look for escalators that determine if you can succeed in a few years.” She said some legislative bills are “killing” businesses, especially when the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) is reformed. In terms of building additional housing, she said CEQA needs reform. “Business has always overcome any problem,” she said. “We have the innovation and the creativity. ... We will figure it out.” As for her assessment of how things are going in the county, Robbins-Meyer said “good” because “unemployment is low, housing has recovered, consumers are buying and we have a wonderful diversity of business.” The latter includes universities, research, tourism, biotech and technology. “All are humming. Off the charts? No. But humming. “I am optimistic (the economy) will remain good this year and into next year,” she said. “I am cautiously optimistic.” Regarding fluctuations in oil prices and stock market, Robbins-Meyer said, “My only advice is to keep your Pepto-Bismol by your bedside.” She added that an upcoming Supreme Court case could impact labor union membership and dues, which could decrease unions’ financial resources. To keep influence in government, unions will need to raise more money by recruiting additional members. To do this, unions must demonstrate their worth to members and
will put additional pressure on businesses to hire union members. “We live in a blue state and it’s getting bluer,” Robbins-Meyer said. “As a business, you have to figure what this will mean to your business. ... (Unions) have a big influence in Sacramento.” Now that the financial outlook is improving for the business sector, she said businesses need to re-examine their and government’s social and moral responsibilities, especially regarding the homeless, those with mental illness and the growing numbers of people at or below the poverty level. “Social policy is as important as fiscal policy ... it has an impact ... on public safety,” she said. Diane Harkey, District 4 representative on California’s Board of Equalization, said the state is doing “a lot better” financially, with $124.2 billion projected in total revenues for 2016-17, up 3.2 percent or $3.8 billion over last year. It’s rainy day fund is required to have $2.6 billion, but the governor is proposing an additional $2 billion plus $1.1 billion for flexible needs. Harkey said home sales and construction is up, along with automobile sales, but the state still have a “long-term wall of debt” with $400 billion in unfunded liabilities due to public pension debt. “I think Governor Brown is chipping away (at this),” she said. She said outside forces are among the state’s risk factors, mentioning that low interest rates are good for home buyers, but bad for savers and pension funds. “It’s good for the stock market, but bad for leverage,” Harkey said. “I think we are very over levered as a nation. ... All the hedge (funds) are exploding again, which we can’t ignore.” She said low oil prices are good for auto sales and consumers in the short term, but bad for transportation funding and California refineries. Harkey also warned about upcoming state
initiatives on the ballot, calling it “a process on steroids.” She said an initiative attempting to chip away at Proposition 13 will make an appearance, so “hold onto your wallets.” The marijuana initiative “will affect your life in Southern California. ... If recreational use passes, it will be a huge industry. The problem is there is no public safety funding or general funding. It’s all special marijuana funding and building another bureaucracy to implement and regulate this. “I am pushing very hard for public safety funding ... concerned since we’re so close to the border,” Harkey said. In terms of outside influences on the region’s economy, Harkey said the San Diego region should not be deeply impacted because financial benefits from its strong military presence will insulate the area. “(The military) is your saving grace,” she said. Michael Tanner, senior fellow at the Cato Institute, said recent federal government spending was $4.35 billion more than it took in, good news since that debt is $1 trillion lower than expenditures five years ago. He called the lower amount “a temporary phenomenon” and projected it will be in the trillions annually by 2022. “It’s not the worse thing to run a budget deficit once in a while, but if you do it month after month, year after year, you end up with a problem,” Tanner said, adding the national debt just passed $19 trillion and is rising. The amount does not take into account unfunded entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, which he said are the crux of the problem. “You cannot tax your way out of the debt we’re in,” he said. “We must cut federal spending. ... You do not get it by cutting the usual suspects ... (but) Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, which are more than 50 percent of federal spending.”

Locker room privacy needed
T
he Poway Unified School District again finds itself in the national headlines, this time as it deals with the sensitive issue of the rights of both students who are transgendered and those who are not. An overflow audience at the Feb. 9 school board meeting was impressively orderly as speakers addressed whether a transgendered Rancho Bernardo High School student should be able to continue to dress in the boys locker room. The issue arose after one student complained about being uncomfortable changing in the locker room for a PE class with a transgender student. Assembly Bill 1266, which was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in August 2013, legally allows transgender students to use facilities on campus based on their gender identity, not on the gender that is listed on their school records. Several speakers at the meeting asked that private changing areas be provided in all district locker rooms. A few also suggested the district create gender-neutral locker rooms and bathrooms on campuses. Supporters of the transgender student insisted that he be allowed to continue to change clothes in the boys locker room and that special accommodations were unnecessary. The student should not be singled out for special treatment, his backers said. Because the matter was not agendized, board members could not comment under terms of the state’s open meeting law. First, everyone involved in both sides of the issue should be complimented for the sensitivity shown at the public meeting. As to a possible resolution, we are inclined to support the notion of each locker room having one or more private changing spaces. These could be used by a variety of students who, for whatever reason, would be more comfortable changing out of view of other students. Gender neutral bathrooms and locker rooms? Probably not. First, there are the issues of cost and available space. Then there’s the question of whether such facilities would be used often enough to justify the expense. The PUSD has a policy to ensure every student’s right to privacy, as well as their right to feel safe, valued and included on campus. With those words in mind, we are confident that the district can work with both sides in this issue to achieve a resolution that respects the rights and privacy of all students.

OUR READERS WRITE One more year What if the San Diego Chargers were in a marriage? “Hello Dear, I’m happy to announce that I have now made a commitment to stay with you throughout the 2016 season. This, of course, is to give my next wife enough time to build our new house up in Inglewood. And by the way, when I do leave, I will be taking your name with me. Until then, let’s enjoy our 55th anniversary. Go Chargers! George Cooke Rancho Bernardo
Privacy, please The Feb. 9 Poway Unified School District board meeting had a huge number of people attend because Holly and Jonathan Franz, and other speakers, were brave enough to stand up for morality, privacy, and decency at Rancho Bernardo High and ask for privacy in the school’s locker room. The LGBT community already has a law protecting them to use any bathroom or locker room facility they desire, but for students who want privacy to not see anatomy of the opposite gender, there is none. The San Diego Unified School District has not had any problems (that have been heard about) because after AB 1266 went into law, they installed private restrooms in all of their schools, available to anyone, as well as options for changing in private locker rooms. We would not have had a huge crowd assemble at the board meeting had the PUSD installed similar facilities in our schools. All students deserve the privacy they desire and something must be done immediately. All of our students deserve to feel safe at school and have the right to remain modest and a space for privacy if they so choose. Joanne Stohs Rancho Bernardo
It is about privacy, respect There are so many reasons for private changing stalls to be available for those students who
would like them. There are students with birth defects. Some students feel uncomfortable because of their weight. Puberty needs to be considered and noted that students develop at different rates. There may be religious reasons or anxiety that a sensitive shy student may have. Some seniors are over 18 years old and legally should not undress in front of any minor nor have a minor undressing in front of them. Some students have been sexually abused and have serious fear and anxiety. Some have birth marks that draw attention when exposed, and some just want simple personal modesty respected. Having some private changing stalls available in the locker rooms at all PUSD schools would provide the privacy our students need and deserve. It is not about conforming to a two year old law. It is not about transgender rights. It is not about segregation. It is not about hate. It is about meeting the needs of all the students in PUSD. No one single student’s needs should be placedigher or valued more than the next student. Darlene Dunn Rancho Bernardo
Lyles on the mark In response to the several deprecatory letters last week about columnist Dick Lyles, I must say they are way off base. Any person who has knowledge of the political system knows, and understands, that Hillary Clinton should have been prosecuted by now. Mark it clearly this is not a matter of opinion, its a fact. Far from being ugly, Mr Lyles is being quite honest and on target about the “Hillary” matter. She should at this point be serving a long prison term. Perhaps the Democrats have rigged the system with Hillary as they have done with other prominent unsavory Democrats. Under such circumstances she will probably survive unscathed. Somehow, I did not sense any froth from the Lyles article. Just the opposite: I thought the Lyles article covered the sordid “Hillary” matter quite well. Don Williams Rancho Bernardo

STRAIGHT TALK BY DICK LYLES
The loss of the capacity to reason
A
fascinating observation made by Augustine of Hippo back in the Fifth Century frequently haunts me. Sixteen hundred years ago Augustine wrote, “People have such a love for truth that when they happen to love something else, they want it to be the truth; and because they do not wish to be proven wrong, they refuse to be shown their mistake. And so, they end up hating the truth for the sake of the object which they have come to love instead of the truth.” This year’s presidential election is giving us yet another opportunity to watch his theorem in action. Today’s America claims no scarcity of people who “end up hating the truth for the sake of the object which they have come to love instead of the truth.” Just look at any of the dwindling
number of people still supporting the presidential candidacy of Hillary Clinton. These “hangers on” fell in love with Ms. Clinton before the most egregious of her actions were made public. Now they spend their energy hating the truth of her deeds for the sake of loving her instead of the truth. But there is more to it than that. In today’s America, these “truth haters” go beyond hating only the truth. They also hate anyone who tells the truth because of the role these truth-telling messengers play for showing the haters the error in embracing that something else in the first place. In addition to being without fact and devoid of truth, the haters’ attacks are vicious and personal and are dividing America more deeply than at any time
since the Civil War. It’s easy to find examples. Just go to last week’s letters-to-the-editor section in this paper (available online). Two weeks ago I penned an opinion piece based on the known facts surrounding Hillary Clinton’s email escapades. All three of the letters to the editor in response to that column were personal attacks on me for having written the piece. Not a single word in any of the letters refuted any of the stated facts. Nor did any of the letters present a counter argument to any of the column’s assertions. In other words, the letters contributed nothing to a thoughtful discussion about these serious issues that threaten our national security and individual lives. What’s even scarier is that these people aren’t alone. This type of behavior is rampant in America. Too many people are losing their capacity to reason. Rather than allowing new information to drive new personal decisions, people childishly cling to emotionally derived choices. People used to chide themselves by saying, SEE LYLES, A18
OUR READERS WRITE (CONTINUED) FROM LETTERS, A16
I rest my case. Richard Taylor Poway
Source of hatred? Hillary Clinton in prison? Come on Mr. Lyles. How about George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld? Remember the young Americans killed and wounded in that unnecessary war in Iraq? And where does all this recent Republican hatred come from? We’ve had Palin (“cross hairs”), Cruz (“carpet bombing”) and Trump (“Mexican rapists”). Isn’t hate speech a crime and punishable by law? Michael Hadlow San Diego
Put Hillary behind bars I support Mr. Lyles’s concept that Hillary should be in jail. She allegedly sacrificed our national security with her stupid personal server. She also lied to the parents of the four Americans killed at Benghazi. I have several epithets I could use to describe her but I will simply use the one the mother of one of the dead soldiers came up with. Hillary lied to her while watching the casket of her son loaded into a hearse. She said (and I paraphrase), “We will find the person who came up with that video that started the raid.” When asked later, the mother simply described her as a “scumbag.”
Number, please Gee, I thought I was the only one in San Diego who had a major problem with the convoluted and frustrating system to report streetlight outages. (Editorial, Feb. 4.) Yes, Rancho Bernardo is getting darker and darker as these lights go unreplaced. Several years ago I made an effort to report the ones I saw that were out but the city’s on-line system was so complicated that I quickly gave up and got to the point where I didn’t care if they ever got fixed or not. At that time, I suggested that to make this process as simple as possible — just mark each pole with a number. You asked if there was a better way and this is it. I recently noticed that two streetlights were out at the intersection of West Bernardo Road and Duenda, where the now closed Taco Bell used to be. A short while back a contractor spent about two weeks working in this and the two poles they were involved with are now clearly identified. It appears that the city of San Diego took my advice and is now numbering at least some of their streetlights. John Ulaszek Rancho Bernardo Letters to the editor should be limited to 250 words and must be signed. They may be emailed to editor@pomeradonews.com or composed online at pomeradonews.com.

FROM LYLES, A17 “Don’t confuse me with the facts, I’ve already made up my mind.” A growing number of people today embrace such sentiment as a call to arms, eager to shoot any messenger who might use truth to cast doubt on their foredrawn conclusions. The problem is not that either I or any
other harbingers of truth care about personal attacks. I don’t, and I doubt others do either. Such attacks are always clearer statements about the character void and intellect of the attacker than they are about the person attacked. The problem is that when people

FROM RALLY, A6 that this isn't the case. "The workplace violence restraining order against Mr. Garner is not rooted in racism, as he claims. The order is based on verbal threats and menacing behavior he exhibited at Painted Rock Elementary, which a judge upheld. Mr. Garnier has not been restrained from speaking at board meetings, and has freely done so, and the district continues to listen," she said in a statement. Paik also commented on the district's diversity and commitment to nondiscrimination. "The district is committed to an active nondiscrimination program. PUSD also prohibits discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on perceived ancestry, age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sex, or sexual orientation," said Paik. "In fact, our district is diverse, from top administration to our student population. All three of our associate superintendents are women, two of whom are women of color. Malliga Tholandi is Indian American and Mel Robertson is Filipino American." Paik said that principals are provided with a yearly cultural observances calendar and events and activities are scheduled to celebrate them, including Black History Month, which the district is observing with theater performances, essay contests, and guest speakers from the civil rights movement. The Garniers and their family have since made repeated requests for Collins to be fired. Garnier’s father-in-law, Keith Wilson, has also headed up a recall effort to recall 20-year board member Andy Patapow, whose term is up in November, for his part in issuing the controversial CABs. Garnier also cited several examples of racial violence seen on PUSD campuses over the years, including the vandalism of a Rancho Bernardo High School van with a racist epithet in 2013 and the presence of a Confederate flag and several nooses on the campus of Poway High School in 2015 following the racially-motivated shootings in South Carolina.
FROM LUNAR, A3 decorations that were displayed in the school libraries, focusing on Chinese culture, and made informational posters about the Lunar New Year that were displayed to help educate students about the holiday. Some schools took things further, with musical performances, talent shows and craft projects. Stone Ranch Elementary’s celebration included musical performances and a talent show. The Hope Junior Orchestra performed the song “Jasmine Flower,” a traditional Chinese song, and the Grace School Choir sang “Happy New Year.” At Park Village Elementary, parents put on a craft helping students to celebrate the Year of the Monkey. “The parents did a lot of work,” said Hou. “They put up a craft table after school for two days and provided all the materials.” Hou said the event drew great feedback from parents, teachers, administrators and students, many of whom were unfamiliar with Lunar New Year and its traditions beforehand. “Through this event, we saw a lot of parents volunteering, and a lot of non-Asian students learning and appreciating Lunar New Year and Chinese culture,” said Hou. “We’ve heard feedback that parents want it back next year.” Hou said that the PUSD Parents Group would like to continue to celebrate Lunar New Year in the district. “We’re so happy to do this for our kids,” she said. “I think it’s very good for our kids to learn about and respect different cultures.” A slideshow of pictures from Lunar New Year events at the nine participating schools can be seen at pusdparents.org/cultural-education/.

BACK FOR MORE
Titans’ Zollmann not satisfied with last year’s finish BY TERRY MONAHAN Chase Zollmann has been on a wrestling mat or the floor of his house almost his entire life. Growing up, brother Clayton, who is two years older, did what older brothers have always done — tortured the younger brother. And dad Jay, who wrestled in high school and a bit in college, was always showing his son some moves on the bedroom floor. If you asked Chase, he wouldn’t have it any other way. Zollmann is a sophomore wrestling at 115 pounds for Poway this season after an impressive inaugural campaign for the Titans. The 5-foot-4 grappler won the San Diego Section and Masters Meet championships at 106 pounds last year. He also placed seventh at the State Championships in Bakersfield. As soon as Zollmann received his state medal, he began setting his course for this season. “I was exhausted but a little disappointed with seventh,’’ Zollmann said. “But I was happy to receive a medal. People kept telling me I would place at state, but I truly believe I could have done a little better.’’ Poway captured the San Diego Section’s Division II dual meet championship last Saturday at Rancho Bernardo. As expected, Zollmann won his bout in the finals, recording his team-leading 28th pin of the season in just 2:44. “I prefer pinners to guys who have to wrestle all six minutes,’’ Poway coach Wayne Branstetter said. “Being a pinner is something that has

Playoffs in full swing The San Diego Section winter playoffs will be in full swing next week with boys and girls basketball joining the already-started girls water polo and wrestling postseasons. The pairing meeting for boys and girls basketball is on Saturday at the San Diego Hall of Champions. The first Open Division games for girls will be Feb. 26 and for the boys on Feb. 27. They want to rip your head off as soon as you step onto the mat.’’ Zollmann doesn’t expect to be the top pinner for the Poway. “Chris Bailey is going to get that,’’ Zollmann said. “He’s going to pin his way through the state finals.’’ Zollmann is sailing that true course back to the state finals. He is 33-2 heading into this weekend’s San Diego Section Divisional Championships at different sites. The Titans will once again defend their Division II title at Westview. Since the Titans have won the divisional title for the last 29 consecutive years, it’s no

longshot to think they will capture yet another CIF crown. Zollmann is favored to capture his second section title and head off to defend his championship from the Masters Meet, setting him on his way to Bakersfield. “Seventh place would be very disappointing this time,’’ he admitted. “I’m looking to get into the finals. Then I can let it all hang out. “I’m hoping these next few weeks will be a lot of fun.’’ It was fun enough last year when Zollmann burst onto the scene with a 44-9 record. Thus far, his lone two losses this season were to highly respected opponents. One was to the No. 2-ranked guy in the state and the No. 1 guy in the nation in the finals of the

Reno Tournament of Champions. “He’s a mat rat, always has been,’’ added Branstetter. “I don’t ever worry about him being scared out there because he’s been in our wrestling room since at least seventh grade.’’ Zollmann became a competitive wrestler at the age of 5. “I still have my singlet from third grade,’’ Zollmann said, sheepishly. “I think it still fits but it’s a little tight.’’ Now all he wants is to have his name on the wall in the Titans’ wrestling room, the one where all the past Titans who became state champions are listed. The first step toward that goal starts this weekend. Monahan is a freelance writer.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Overton playing big for Rancho Bernardo High BY TERRY MONAHAN Despite being just 6-foot-3, point guard JJ Overton is the tallest player on the Rancho Bernardo boys basketball team. It seems as if Overton is always the biggest player on his team. Even back in first grade back near Salt Lake City, Utah, when he began playing for the Bingham Miners in AAU ball, no one was taller. “I looked at a team picture and I looked like everyone’s dad on the team,’’ said Overton, whose dad Chuck played basketball overseas when JJ was just beginning his playing career. “Seems like I should be looking up to one or two guys, at least. “We were state champions three straight years. I have a timeline of my AAU career in my room.’’ Overton, a 6-foot-3 junior at Rancho Bernardo, moved to La Jolla after seventh grade before moving again to Scripps Ranch and then to Rancho Bernardo. “I had my winter coats hung up and ready, but the cold weather never came,’’ he said, laughing. “I spent Christmas day at the beach. I called all my buddies back in Utah about that.’’ Now playing travel ball for the San Diego All-Stars, Overton has run into a few of his former Miners teammates each summer. They razz him about leaving them
behind. “I haven’t played against any of them yet,’’ he said. “I usually play the weather card with them at that point. They have no idea how much better the weather is here than back in Utah. “I wasn’t so good at being cold back then, but I’m much better with weather like it’s been the last few weeks. “For me, the novelty of cold weather wore off pretty quickly.’’ Because of his height, Overton presents matchup problems for other teams. Smaller point guards can’t guard him and taller defenders run the risk of not being able to keep up with him on the court. Led by Overton, the Broncos are closing in on 20 wins for the season. They have dropped three Palomar League games — two losses to No. 3 Torrey Pines and once to rival and No. 8 Poway. A driving force for the Broncos this season was a crushing loss to Valhalla in last year’s San Diego Section Division III semifinals. A few seconds from victory and a berth in the championship game, the No. 3-seeded Broncos gave up a basket on a turnover, missed a shot and a Valhalla layup — all in the game’s final 30 seconds — put the No. 2 Norseman in the finals with the 56-53 victory. It was not a loss that was easily SEE OVERTON, B4

A major decision came last year when Herrman elected to head east and attend New Hampton Prep School, where there’s student housing and an ice rink on campus. In 37 games, he recorded 15 goals and 35 points. “That was a great experience,” said Herrman, who followed a path not uncommon for top players to move to junior hockey hotbeds, albeit icy locales. “You mature a lot when you live by yourself. The coaches out there were great. They really helped me to develop into a stronger, faster player. Also, the academics there are amazing.” Herrman, who previously played for the Junior Kings in Los Angeles, returned to Southern California to play for the Junior Ducks at the invitation of Kim. “Rory is an extremely hard worker,” Kim said. “He is pretty good all-around. He competes hard, is physical, and shoots the puck very well.” Arizona State is currently in a hybrid season making the transition to NCAA Division I status next season. It joins Alabama-Huntsville as one of two schools with ice hockey programs in the Sun Belt. For Herrman, ASU offers a chance to stay relatively close to home. BY GLAE THIEN As a 6-year-old fan, Poway’s Rory Herrman had his picture taken with Alex Kim of the Gulls during their final season in the East Coast Hockey League. The photo shows a kid who would climb from the ranks of San Diego roller and ice hockey to the top junior regional teams and a spot over winter break on the US Hockey U17 team. He’s also committed to play for the recently established ice hockey program at Arizona State. Now, 10 years later, Herrman and Kim are together as player and coach, respectively, on the Junior Ducks associated with Anaheim’s NHL team. This comes after Herrman spent a year playing hockey at a New Hampshire prep school. Back home again, Herrman also has returned to his roots in roller hockey. The junior is playing this winter for Poway High before his hockey travels take him elsewhere on a path that he hopes leads to the NHL. “Doing roller hockey kind of takes me back to playing when I was younger,” said Herrman, who turns 17 on March 16. “So it’s fun to play again. I figured I’d join the team and help the guys out and learn from the coach. It’s also just good playing for your high school.” The high school games on Monday and Wednesday happen to be on days off from the Junior Ducks for Herrman, who often plays roller or ice hockey seven days a week during the winter.

Welk’s ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ does not disappoint REVIEW
Musical can be seen through April 24 BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Starting with a powerful rendition of “Tradition” and sustaining that quality of performance throughout, Welk Resort Theatre’s “Fiddler on the Roof” does not disappoint. The multi-Tony Award-winning Broadway musical is appearing on the Welk’s Escondido stage through April 24, with New York-based actor Rudy Martinez excelling as family patriarch Tevye, a poor milkman fighting a losing battle over maintaining tradition. Set in the small, predominantly Jewish town of Anatevka in 1905 Russia, the villagers are coming to terms with political unrest, government animosity toward Jews and their community’s younger residents bucking tradition, favoring more personal interactions between men and women (like dancing together) and marriages based on love, even if that means marrying outside of the faith or against one’s parents’ wishes. Tevye; his wife, Golde (Wendy Waddell), and five daughters are front-and-center for this period of societal and political change, representing households’ struggles in Anatevka and other villages as Jews were forced out of their homes by Russian leaders. At the turn of the 20th century, marriages in Anatevka are still arranged by a Yente (Susan E.V. Boland), which is what Tevye and Golde expect for their daughters. The three oldest — Tzeitel (Kelly Derouin), Hodel (Nicki Elledge) and Chava (Olivia Hodson) — have other ideas.
KEN JACQUES
Golde (Wendy Waddell) and Tevye (Rudy Martinez) ask each other “Do You Love Me?” while contemplating their arranged marriage of 25 years in the Welk Resort Theatre’s “Fiddler on the Roof.” Initially the girls accept that Yente holds their fates in her hands, but as they progress through the song “Matchmaker” — a number with cute choreography filled with youthful exuberance — it becomes apparent that they are reluctant to marry at such a young age, especially if Yente picks much older men for them. That scenario becomes reality for Tzeitel when, per Yente’s matchmaking, Tevye
R A M O N A
agrees to her marrying the widower Lazar Wolf (Scott Ramp). Though Tevye has never liked the man — who is older than himself — he agrees since Lazar is a wealthy butcher, a guarantee that Tzeitel will be hungry. But Tzeitel is in love with childhood friend Motel (Ben Williams), a poor tailor with lots of ambition. Secretly, they pledged their love — and promised to marry — without telling their parents or involving a Yente.
W I N E
How things unfold with Tzeitel sets the stage for her younger sisters to push boundaries and their father’s patience even further. Kathy Brombacher, founder/artistic director emeritus of Moonlight Stage Productions for 32 years, directs the Welk’s show. Her staging, combined with Orlando Alexander’s choreographic talent, makes this “Fiddler” worth seeing. They deserve special kudos for a very creative staging of “The Dream,” where Tevye has to get Golde to accept his decision regarding whom Tzeitel will marry. Of course, Brombacher and Alexander’s efforts would not be successful were it not for the 19 cast members’ abilities. In addition to memorial performances by Martinez and Waddell, others deserving mention include Williams for his portrayal of the timid Motel; Jacob Hoff for his performance as intellectual revolutionary Perchik; and Derouin, Elledge and Hodson for playing the girls torn between doing what is expected of them and following their hearts. Some of the best musical numbers include Martinez’s “If I Were a Rich Man,” a song that along with “Tradition” showcased his rich voice. His duet with Waddell, when asking “Do You Love Me?” was sweet. Others include the lively “To Life,” Williams’ “Miracles of Miracles,” Hoff’s “Now I Have Everything” and Elledge’s “Far From the Home I Love.” “Fiddler on the Roof” can be seen at 1 p.m. Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays; plus 8 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays through April 24. Tickets are $49, with group/subscriber discounts available. An optional pre-show buffet is $19. Purchase at welkresorts.com or call 888-802-7469. The Welk Resort Theatre is at 8860 Lawrence Welk Drive in Escondido. Parking is free.

Americana and blues concert is Friday
Event will be held in Old Poway Park BY EMILY SORENSEN Music lovers can enjoy blues and Americana music Friday night at Old Poway Park. The San Diego Folk Heritage is hosting a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19 in Templar’s Hall in Old Poway Park, 1413 Midland Road. Performing at the concert will be the Baja Blues Boys and Sidewinder. Tickets are $18, $15 for members of the Folk Heritage, and are available at the door or online in advance from TicketWeb.com (search for San Diego Folk Heritage). Baja Blues Boys and Sidewinder will each play about a 45 minute set, so concert attendees will be able to enjoy two concerts in one enjoyable evening. Sidewinder member Bruce Huntington described his duo’s music as original Americana, with some bluegrass, Carter Family, folk, Bob Dylan and some Western music; while Tim Atkins of Baja Blues Boys said his duo’s music was mostly inspire by Delta Blues, roots and Americana. Originally made up of four members, Sidewinder is now a duo, made up of Huntington and his musical partner Ken Wilcox. Sidewinder has been together for about three years, but Huntington said he has performed with Wilcox for years, in several groups including Trails and Rails and Swing West. The group until recently included a third member, Tom Wolverton, who left the
group for personal reasons. "We’ll be picking songs to perform this time that don’t require a three-part harmony," said Huntington. "We hated to lose him, he’s a great musician." The Baja Blues Boys, made up of Atkins on guitar and vocals and Andre Perrault on harmonica, have been playing together since 1998. Sidewinder performs often in Los Angeles and Arizona, but Huntington said that he and Wilcox are trying to stick closer to home and perform more often in San Diego County. They are also working on their first album together as Sidewinder, which Huntington said could be out possibly sometime in the summer, depending on how things go with recording and putting the album together. Huntington and Wilcox have previously released a Western-music album together. Huntington said that Sidewinder’s performance at the concert Friday would feature several of their original songs, as well as a number of well-known favorites. The Baja Blues Boys said that their show will feature mostly their own original music. "We play a wide range of styles with the genre of blues," said Atkins. "People are always surprised that so much sounds can come out of two guys. We’re not quiet." For a preview of music by Sidewinder and the Baja Blues Boys, visit www.musicbysidewinder.com and www.bajabluesboys.com.

It is said that, in 1941 the Ford motor company produced an experimental automobile with a plastic body composed of 70% cellulose fibers from hemp. The car body could absorb blows 10 times as great as steel without denting. The car was designed to run on hemp fuel. Because of the ban on both hemp and alcohol, the car was never mass produced.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. ecently I wandered into my doctor’s office for a check-up. The prognosis wasn’t serious…just a slight case of Creeping Collateral Crud. Though I hadn’t planned on making a house call, I’m sorry to report that his business cards looked sickly. At first glance everything seemed fine. Design, colors, logo…all appeared healthy. However, the x-rays revealed the cards had been printed twice. And they looked it. Near as I could tell, the cards were finished, then someone examined them and realized the title “Dr.” was missing. Oops! To print something…anything...you strategize, conceive, write, and design. Everything’s fluid and can be changed, updated, massaged, revised, and tweaked ad infinitum. Then at some point you call it complete and print it. Now you’re committed. My dad (who grew up in the printing business) says mistakes at this point guarantee you’re manufacturing instant garbage. So what’s a business owner to do? My medical friend had two options at this point: reprint these cards or print them again. Reprinting eliminated the need for more paper, making it the cheaper alternative. Suggesting the doctor’s desire to rectify this error without another major investment. In short, he went down the path of least resistance. This man’s opinion: poor choice, because: • The now-imprinted word “Dr.” was 2 points larger than the other words on his
Business cards remain important communications vehicles, and may be the only marketing tools potential customers ever see. If they reflect an unprofessional look, they reflect an unprofessional business. card; • The title was printed bold, calling attention to the mistake; and • The additional word threw off the centering of his name and title. Which means somewhere between the revision stage and the commitment stage, the man in charge didn’t proofread it…again! Sure he can blame his staff, designer, writer, agency, or printer if it soothes his mind. However, it’s his business, his business card, his money…and his responsibility. Yes, I’m a pill. I know not being polished doesn’t necessarily chase away customers. However, this type of error indicates a lack of quality control. It all but screams “Is he cutting corners that might negatively impact the services I’m hiring him for?” Business cards remain important communications vehicles, and may be the only marketing tools potential customers ever see. If they reflect an unprofessional look, they reflect an unprofessional business. So, Dr. K, though you didn’t ask, I’d advise you to spring for the new cards and help your overall image. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Got marketing questions? Send ‘em to www.askmrmarketing.com.

North County Soccer Park celebrates 30 years BY EMILY SORENSEN Friday marks 30 years of soccer fun at the North County Soccer Park in Poway. The park, at 14530 Espola Road, opened in 1986 and has been providing Poway and its surrounding communities ever since with soccer and, more recently, baseball. Owned and operated by Dave Brennan since 2000, the North County Soccer Park (NCSP) has expanded by leaps and bounds to include lessons on top of the already-existing league games. Brennan had no real experience in soccer when he purchased the NCSP, other than being a parent to a child who had played there for several years. After 16 years in the business, he said he can’t imagine doing anything else. “I’ll do this for the rest of my life,” he said. “I enjoy what I do.” The park will celebrate its anniversary on Friday with free cake and slushies during operating hours. Anyone with a
NCSP shirt is encouraged to wear it for generational photos that will be taken, to demonstrate the multiple generations that have enjoyed the park. “There’s quite a history of people who have played here as kids and now have their own kids playing here,” said Brennan, who added that there are even grandparents who played at the NCSP when it first opened who now have grandchildren playing on the same fields they did. The NCSP has 164 teams of youth and adult players who play on the fields every week, as well as nearly 700 kids in the Lil’ Kickers soccer classes and Lil Sluggers baseball classes, held in Poway and in Escondido. Brennan said he estimates that about 50,000 children have played at the NCSP over the past 30 years. The NCSP has offered league soccer for children since its beginning, but Brennan added leagues for adults and teens, as

well as soccer lessons for teens, after purchasing the business 16 years ago. “The biggest thing we’ve done is starting the Lil’ Kickers classes in 2004,” said Brennan. The Lil’ Kickers classes are for kids ages 18 months to 10 years old. Brennan said that while soccer leagues are still very popular, many parents want to start their children in soccer younger, or get them lessons to go along with league play. The Lil Sluggers baseball classes, for kids ages 2 through 6, attract about 60 kids a week and are intended to help prepare kids for Little League, not to compete with it, Brennan said. The new sessions for Lil’ Kickers and Lil Sluggers will be starting in early March and running through mid-May. Each class is a ten-week session.
