Chapel’s annex seeks funding BY EMILY SORENSEN An unfortunate snag has left the Community Church of Poway’s chapel annex project short on funds. The church is seeking $50,000 to help finish up the annex, which will add restrooms and a bridal area in a small building next to the historic chapel. Construction on the annex began in early fall and was originally aimed to be finished by Christmas. Unfortunately, the project was thrown a curveball when it was discovered that the sewer system underneath the parking lot was over 40 years old and in need of replacing. “There’s always delays in construction,” said Karen Dunn, owner of Poway Transmissions, who is part of a small group at the church who is working on raising funds for the project. Work on the sewer system is still being done, Dunn said. Dunn said the church is now aiming SEE CHAPEL, A13
City council will discuss agricultural water plan update BY EMILY SORENSEN The Poway City Council will be taking a look at a resolution to approve the 2016 regional agricultural water management plan update, among other topics at the Tuesday, March 1 meeting. The council will also hold a workshop on the citywide classification and compensation study currently being conducted. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the City Council Chambers at 13325 Civic Center Drive. The regional agricultural water management plan update (RAWMPU) the council will be asked to approve stems from the City of Poway entering into a cost-sharing agreement with 13 other area urban water suppliers to prepare a SEE COUNCIL, A12

Fill the Boot Drive returns on March 2 BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Firefighters in Rancho Bernardo, Poway and 4S Ranch will be standing at street corners on Wednesday to collect money for their annual Fill the Boot Drive. As of press time, their exact locations selected for the March 2 fundraiser were not available, but in the past popular collection intersections during morning rush hours have included Rancho Bernardo Road/Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo, Pomerado Road/Twin Peaks Road in Poway and Camino del Norte/Dove Canyon Road in 4S Ranch. Sometimes firefighters also collect money during the evening commute. They will accept any amount of money, from spare change to $1, $5, $20 and $100 bills. Throughout the county there will be firefighters from almost 40 departments at more than 100 intersections accepting donations. The departments, including San Diego Fire-Rescue, Poway Fire and Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, will be competing for bragging rights and a “highly-coveted” bronze Boot Drive trophy, officials said. The countywide 17th annual Fill the Boot Drive raises money for the Burn Institute. Last year, firefighters collected nearly $250,000 for its programs and services, officials said. Those programs have included Camp Beyond the

Love of animals brings 4S Ranch boy out of shell
Ryan Seamons with his goat, Her-She Kisses.
BY EMILY SORENSEN A 4S Ranch boy has discovered his love of animals thanks to 4-H and a very special goat named Her-She Kisses. Ryan Seamons, 12, loves animals more than anything in the world and dreams of being a veterinarian. He also has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. Christine Seamons, Ryan’s mother, said working with animals has helped Ryan break out of the shell that Asperger’s keeps him in. “One thing with Asperger’s is, you need to find their ‘it.’ Once you do, they thrive,” said Seamons. Ryan has been thriving since becoming involved with raising animals and riding horses, Seamons said. He even recently gave a presentation at his school, the Winston School in Del Mar, where he is in seventh grade, on his Nigerian dwarf goat Her-She Kisses (so named because she loves to give kisses) and 4-H. “The kids stared (at me and Her-She Kisses), which was weird,” said Ryan. “They laughed at (my goat) doing normal things.” Ryan’s presentation was in front of the whole school, he said, and
Ryan Seamons giving a presentation about Her-She Kisses and 4-H at his school. he told them about 4-H and his plans to breed Her-She Kisses. “They asked a lot of questions, like if goats eat tin cans, what I feed her, how I take care of her,” said Ryan. Ryan became involved with 4-H about two years ago, after discovering his love of animals. He joined the Poway 4-H Club about 8 months ago, because he wanted to raise animals without
having to auction them off for slaughter at the end, as his old 4-H group did. “Poway’s 4-H had a wider variety of clubs, activities and community outreach programs that appealed to Ryan,” said Seamons. Ryan ended up campaigning for a way to save his goat from going to slaughter, even appearing on television, asking for someone to buy his goat at auction to bring to a farm instead. After the goat went to auction, the winner returned the goat to Ryan, as well as giving him a scholarship. That goat now lives on a farm in Ramona. Now raising his second goat, Her-She Kisses, Ryan said he still loves raising goats. “Goats are good companion animals,” he said. “They’re cute, and they’re also good for eating dried brush that can cause wildfires. They also make good therapy animals, and provide fresh fertilizer.” Ryan said he will be showing Her-She Kisses at the fair this summer, but she won’t be going to auction. Instead, he’ll breed her in the fall. He said he’s hoping for two or three baby goats, all girls, though if he gets boys, he’ll sell them for breeding or as SEE LOVE, A10

Three authors coming to annual RB luncheon Novelists Coyle, Vreeland and Wilder to speak
BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Three local authors will be discussing their novels and meeting with fans next month during Brandeis National Committee’s annual Book and Author Luncheon in Rancho Bernardo. The authors will be Matt Coyle, Susan Vreeland and Shirley Ann Wilder. Each will talk about their works, answer audience questions and be available to sign books sold at the event. The luncheon will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 8 at Bernardo Heights Country Club, 16006 Bernardo Heights Parkway in Rancho Bernardo. Tickets are $55, available by calling Linda Simon at 858-487-8041 by March 3. popular and proceeds will benefit a new student scholarship campaign that the Waltham, Massachusetts-based Brandeis University started this year. Coyle is a La Jolla native who will be speaking about his crime novel “Night Tremors,” the second in his Rick Cahill series. In this latest novel, Cahill’s private
investigative work takes him from La Jolla to San Diego’s dark underbelly as he tries to help free a man from prison who might have been wrongly convicted of murder. Coyle’s first novel was “Yesterday’s Echo,” which introduced the character of Rick Cahill. Vreeland is a New York Times best-selling author of
historical fiction on art. The San Diego-based author will talk about her latest novel, “Lisette’s List,” which is set in southern France. It is a tale about three artists, three generations, three wars and eight paintings, while focusing on a woman and the men who surround her. The novel involves a heartache, a vow, a mystery, a search and a list.
Vreeland’s previous novels include “Girl in Hyacinth Blue,” “Clara and Mr. Tiffany,” “What Love Sees,” “Life Studies,” “The Forest Lover,” “The Passion of Artemisia” and “Luncheon of the Boating Party.” Wilder is also a San Diego-based author who has primarily focused on contemporary romances. She will talk about her 2012 book, “Too Many Cooks,” in which a San Diego widow and widower find true love while scheming to marry off their adult children. Wilder also wrote “A Son by Any Name” and her novel “Fly Me” will be released in August. In addition to the author discussion moderated by Leslie Goldstein, the chapter’s recording secretary, there will be two vendors selling fancy candles and jewelry, Simon said. The chapter will also be honoring Mark Edelstein, publisher of the San Diego Jewish Journal, “for all the things his newspaper does for the San Diego community,” Simon said.

Adobe Home Tour is March 6 BY EMILY SORENSEN Explore unique adobe homes on March 6 with the fifth annual Adobe Home Tour. The tour, which features three homes in Poway and two homes in Escondido, will benefit the Escondido History Center. The tour celebrates the unusual and iconic homes built by Larry and Jack Weir between 1948 and 1987 in Southern California. Their unique style blended ancient building techniques, including handmade adobe bricks, and mid-century ranch home elements. Cost for the tour is $25. Tickets are available online at adobehometour.com. This is a self-guided tour. Parking is available in each of the neighborhoods and at the height of the day may require a short walk. Due to the Weirs’s use of multiple levels, shallow step-downs and tendency to build homes on steep lots, these homes
are not easily accessible by those using wheelchairs or walkers. This fifth adobe tour focuses on the adobe homes built by Larry Weir in north Poway and south Escondido between 1950 and 1975. The home designs are fanciful and artistic, featuring undulating walls, turrets, wagon-wheel elements, lazy Susans, terrazo, wrought iron and Catalina tile. The bricks for the homes were often manufactured on-site with clay excavated from the site, and the outdoors are just as designed as the interiors, featuring courtyards, succulent landscapes, fountains and edible gardens. Changes to California earthquake code in the 1980s meant that adobe homes became much less prevalent, and “true” adobe homes built entirely our of adobe brick are not built anymore in Southern California.

companion animals and use the proceeds to get another goat, or maybe a pig, he said. Her-She Kisses lives on a farm on the border of Poway and Rancho Bernardo, as the Seamons family can’t keep a goat in 4S Ranch. Ryan visits her once a week, where he cleans her pen, feeds her and takes her on walks along the trails, to get her used to walking on different surfaces. Though he’s very fond of goats, Ryan said he loves “every animal in the world” and wants to attend UC Davis and become a veterinarian. Once he’s done being a vet, he said he wants to own a “giant property” somewhere where he has all the animals in the world, where he’ll breed them to sell to 4-H groups and therapeutic homes. Seamons said Ryan also does therapeutic riding with Ride Above Disability on a weekly basis. “(Therapeutic riding) challenges him academically as well as physically, because they know he wants to be a vet.” The effect animals have
Ryan Seamons and Her-She Kisses. on Ryan was discovered on a trip to a relative’s farm, where he bonded with a very temperamental horse named Fireball, Seamons said. “Ryan sat down and started brushing him, and Ryan was totally relaxed. The horse started nibbling on Ryan’s ear, relaxed and rested his head on Ryan. It was amazing to see them bond and relax over brushing. That’s when I knew that we needed to pursue this,” said Seamons. The first time Ryan ever shook someone’s hand, Seamons said, was on a visit to a feed store to buy food for his goat. “It’s amazing to me, to see what he’s doing,” she said.

Chargers pushing for downtown stadium, reject Mission Valley SAN DIEGO (CNS) — The Chargers announced Tuesday that they’ll pursue a stadium project in downtown San Diego, in conjunction with a planned expansion of the convention center, with the aim of placing a citizen’s initiative on the November general election ballot. In making their decision, team officials rejected city and county of San Diego offers to build a new facility next to existing Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley. Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani said the arguments for Mission Valley were compelling in many respects. “At the same time, we have considered the potential benefits to both the greater San Diego region and the Chargers of a multi-use stadium/convention center facility downtown,’’ Fabiani said. “The multi-use facility, when combined with Petco Park, the existing convention center, the Gaslamp Quarter and a revitalized East Village, would create an unparalleled entertainment and sports district that will host Super Bowls and will ideally be a permanent home for Comic-Con and a Comic-Con museum,’’ he said. “All of our research demonstrates that voters are more likely to approve a multi-use facility that would generate economic activity on hundreds of days per year, including by attracting major sporting and convention events that San Diego cannot now host.’’ Fabiani said a downtown project would free up the Mission Valley site for potential use by San Diego State University and UC San Diego, both of which have eyed the property for years for expansion. The Qualcomm stadium
site could also be used for a large riverfront park. A coalition that includes former Councilwoman Donna Frye, lawyer Cory Briggs and the development firm of ex-Padres owner John Moores formed last year to push such a project. Their plans include building more convention center space that’s not attached to the existing facility, so it wouldn’t be the contiguous expansion sought by tourism officials. The decision came after a couple of weeks of talks between Chargers representatives, and negotiators for the city and county of San Diego — including Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Supervisor Ron Roberts. Prior to those talks, National Football League owners voted to let the Rams return to Los Angeles, and rejected a joint proposal by the Chargers and Oakland Raiders to build a stadium in Carson. The Chargers, which have a one-year option to be the second team, along with the Rams, in a future stadium in Inglewood, subsequently announced they would play the 2016 season in San Diego while trying to find a local solution to the stadium quandary. In a joint statement, Faulconer and Roberts said the Mission Valley plan would deliver a new stadium without raising taxes, so a vote to approve it would only require a simple majority. “Most experts we’ve talked to have concluded that building a stadium downtown — on land not owned by either the city or the Chargers — would increase costs by hundreds of millions of dollars and take years longer to complete,’’ Faulconer and Roberts
said. “It remains unclear how the Chargers intend to finance a downtown stadium,’’ they said. “But it is abundantly clear that a ballot measure that raises taxes for a stadium must be approved by two-thirds of San Diego’s voters. This is an extremely high hurdle to clear. We remain committed to maintaining an open dialogue with the Chargers as we learn more details about their plan.’’ At a news conference, Chargers stadium consultant Fred Maas said a joint project with the convention center could provide some “economies of scale’’ to lower prices. Team officials will explore their financing options to try to craft a financing plan that requires a simple majority vote. Maas said the Chargers will have to file their initiative with the City Clerk’s Office by March 24 in order to begin the process of collecting petition signatures to qualify for the general election ballot. “We really focused on the opportunities — do we really want to replicate another Qualcomm, or do we want to try to do something really special downtown,’’ Maas said. SDSU officials declined to comment until they learned details of the Chargers plans. With Qualcomm Stadium likely to be leveled if a new Chargers facility is built, school administrators would have to decide whether to build a smaller stadium for the Aztecs football team either on campus, the former Qualcomm Stadium site, or play downtown — a significantly longer trip for students.

FROM COUNCIL, A1 RAWMPU, which allows commercial agricultural water to be exempted from mandatory state water cutbacks, set by Governor Brown in April of 2015 to have 25 percent water conservation statewide. The 14 suppliers cover 46,227 acres of agricultural land. The fiscal impact for the City of Poway for creating this plan was only $525, as Poway represents less than 1 percent of the total acreage covered by the plan. The council will also workshop the ongoing citywide classification and compensation study. This study will ensure that the city’s compensation practices and benefits are competitive and consistent with those of comparable employers and will establish a pay plan that is consistent with public practices. It will also help ensure that employees are properly classified for the work they perform. Council members will be asked to provide staff with direction on two specific policy areas in the study: market definition of the jobs, and pay policy (or desired market position).

The annex, left, will look very similar to the historic chapel when it is finished. FROM CHAPEL, A1 to be finished with the project, which includes both the new building and a courtyard, in the spring. The historic chapel, despite being 128 years old, is still in regular use by several churches and for weddings and other religious ceremonies. Using it can be difficult, however, as there are no restrooms in the chapel, so the main church must be opened up for bathroom use during events. “This will make the community able to use (the chapel) without the expense of opening the big building,” said Dunn. The new annex building will look very similar to the historic chapel, complete with it’s iconic steeple. The 624-square-foot building will match the historic chapel’s exterior materials and colors. It will have both restrooms and a space
FROM STORES, A1 the Albertsons it was prior to being converted into a Haggen’s grocery store last year, Foster said that is not the case. “It will be a traditional Albertsons, with a pharmacy,” he said. “We’ve hired back many of our associates from when it was Albertsons and Haggen’s,” he said. “More than one-third we re-hired or transferred back.” Foster was previously at the Poway store, which was not included when Albertsons — now part of Vons/Safeway — bought back some of its former stores once Haggen’s financial troubles forced it to close most stores it purchased last spring during a massive expansion. The Rancho Bernardo and Poway Albertsons were among those Albertsons initially had to give up once it merged with Vons around a year ago. The Rancho Bernardo store has around 90 employees and Foster said he would like to have around 100 by opening. He is still hiring. For an application, go to Albertsons.com and click on “careers.” Across the street from Albertsons, Valvoline Instant Oil Change opened on Feb. 10 at 12472 Rancho Bernardo Road, said Manager Charlie Pratt. It replaced RB Oil Change. Pratt said no appointment is necessary, with service provided within 10 to 15 minutes while drivers wait. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. The business is also hiring additional employees. Pratt said the business will have a grand opening celebration in the near future.
for brides and bridal parties to change and prepare for weddings, as well as a storage space. “This was the only way to add restrooms and a wedding room,” said Dunn. “I think they did a great job with the design in making it not stand out.” Dunn said the church would also be holding a grand reopening celebration once the project is finished. The courtyard will include stone benches, tiles purchased by donors and landscaping. It will be used for receptions and as a quiet place where people can meditate and relax, Dunn said. Those looking to help the church meet its $50,000 goal can purchase engraved tiles for $500, which will be placed in the courtyard, or stone benches for $5,000. Monetary donations can also be made. All donations and questions should be directed to the church office at 858-748-3304 or online at www.ccpucc.org. Phil’s BBQ is holding a hiring fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this week at its new restaurant under construction at 17051 W. Bernardo Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Applicants are welcome to show up with résumés. Management is hiring cashiers, cooks, prep cooks, grillers, bussers, bartenders and other employees, said spokeswoman Melinda Leonard. The restaurant — in the former Elephant Bar location — is scheduled to open in late March, she said, adding a soft opening and grand opening are planned. To get on the notification list, send an email to emailus@philsbbq.net. Leonard said sustainability has been the focus of work at the new 7,720-square-foot restaurant, with eco-friendly attributes like LED lighting, solar tubes, high efficiency fryers and dual-glazed windows. “(Its) water reclamation system … will repurpose the byproduct water created as a result of reverse osmosis purification,” she said. “With this system, Phil’s BBQ will pump the previously wasted gallons of water up into a storage tank and use that water to flush toilets and irrigate the new drought tolerant landscape.” The restaurant, part of a San Diego chain, will offer lunch, dinner, catering plus a full bar featuring local microbrewery and specialty cocktail options. Its meeting space will accommodate 80 people, with fruit and pastries available for early morning meetings, Leonard said. “We have searched high and low for a spot convenient to Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Mira Mesa and 4S Ranch,” said owner Phil Pace. “We are confident we have found a perfect fit.”

Home invasion suspects are charged in one of four cases BY KELLY WHEELER SAN DIEGO (CNS) — Five people, including four gang members, were charged Friday with an early morning home-invasion robbery in Sorrento Valley in which a mother of three was attacked as she slept and sexually assaulted. As of Monday, no charges had yet been filed for home invasions in Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain Ranch and Sabre Springs, for which the suspects were also alledgedly involved. Stephen Ramon Gomez, 20; Thomas James Smith, 24; and brothers Aaron David Rico III, 20; and 17-year-old Aaron David Rico V were charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault. All four are gang members, said Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang. Robin Elizabeth Shawver, 20, faces conspiracy, robbery and burglary counts. The arraignment follows the Feb. 18 announcement by police that six people were arrested in connection with a series of residential robberies during which some victims were tied up and threatened with guns in their northern San Diego homes. One person arrested last Thursday in connection with the crime spree,
19-year-old Victor Fransisco Harvey, was not charged in Friday’s case. Wang said the charges filed on Feb. 19 stem from only the Jan. 31 home- invasion robbery in Sorrento Valley. The investigation is continuing and more charges may be forthcoming against the defendants charged Friday or other defendants, Wang told reporters. In the Jan. 31 Sorrento Valley incident, Wang said the victim and her three children — ages 4 to 8 years old — were asleep at about 2 a.m. when the defendants came into the home through an unlocked door, barged into her room, demanded money and asked where the safe was located. The defendants took jewelry off the woman’s body, pointed a gun at her and threatened to shoot her, then sexually assaulted her, covered her face with a pillow case, tied her up and fled with $10,000 worth of jewelry and other property, the prosecutor said. Judge Jay Bloom called the case “extremely serious’’ and set bail for Gomez, Rico III, Smith and Rico V at $1 million each. Shawver’s bail was set at $500,000. Smith — who was on probation for
residential burglary — faces 60 years to life in prison if convicted. Gomez and the Rico brothers face 25 years to life if convicted. Shawver faces nine years behind bars if she’s found guilty. “This is a very serious case,’’ Wang said outside court. “This is a very violent act that these defendants committed. The victim was traumatized by what happened.’’ The most recent of the crimes occurred in the 14000 block of Breezeway Place near Cedarhurst Lane in Carmel Mountain Ranch shortly before 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 11, according to police. It took place about five miles from where a trio of thieves entered a home in the 11300 block of Spring Meadow Lane in Sabre Springs through a side door less than three hours earlier. The suspects also have been linked to a similar robbery that took place in the 11400 block of Aliento Court in Rancho Bernardo on Feb. 5. While conducting searches as part of the investigation, detectives impounded two replica guns believed to have been used during the robberies, police said. A status conference was set for today (Thursday) and a preliminary hearing for March 3.

SENIORS SAVVY SENIOR BY JIM MILLER
Tax filing requirements for retirees in 2016
D
ear Savvy Senior, What is the IRS income tax filing requirements going to be for this tax season? Due to health problems I stopped working early last year, so I’m wondering if I need to file. Unintended Retiree Dear Unintended, There are a number of factors that affect whether or not you need to file a federal income tax return this year, including how much you earned last year (in 2015), and the source of that income, as well as your age and filing status. Here’s a rundown of this tax season’s IRS filing requirements. For most people, this is pretty straightforward. If your 2015 gross income — which includes all taxable income, not counting your Social Security benefits, unless you are married and filing
separately — was below the threshold for your age and filing status, you probably won’t have to file. But if it’s over, you will. ■ Single: $10,300 ($11,850 if you’re 65 or older by Jan. 1, 2016). ■ Married filing jointly: $20,600 ($21,850 if you or your spouse is 65 or older; or $23,100 if you’re both over 65). ■ Married filing separately: $4,000 at any age. ■ Head of household: $13,250 ($14,800 if age 65 or older). ■ Qualifying widow(er) with dependent child: $16,600 ($17,850 if age 65 or older). To get a detailed breakdown on federal filing requirements, along with information on taxable and nontaxable income, call the IRS at 800-829-3676 and ask them to mail you a free copy of the “Tax Guide for Seniors” (publication 554), or see irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p554.pdf.
Even if you’re not required to file a federal tax return this year, don’t assume that you’re also excused from filing state income taxes. Special Requirements There are, however, some other financial situations that will require you to file a tax return, even if your gross income falls below the IRS filing requirement. For example, if you had earnings from self-employment in 2015 of $400 or more, or if you owe any special taxes to the IRS such as alternative minimum tax or IRA tax penalties, you’ll probably need to file. To figure this out, the IRS offers an interactive tax assistant tool on its website that asks a series of questions that will help you determine if you’re required to file, or if you should file because you’re due a refund. You can access this tool at irs.gov/filing — click on “Do you need to file a return?” Or, you can get assistance over the phone by calling the IRS helpline at 800-829-1040. You can also get face-to-face help at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. See irs.gov/localcontacts or call 800-829-1040 to locate a center near you. Check Your State Even if you’re not required to file a federal tax return this year, don’t assume that you’re also excused from filing state income taxes. The rules for your state might be very
different. Check with your state tax agency before concluding that you’re entirely in the clear. For links to state tax agencies see taxadmin.org/state-tax-agencies. Tax Prep Assistance If you find that you do need to file a tax return this year, you can get help through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (or TCE) program. Sponsored by the IRS, TEC provides free tax preparation and counseling to middle and low-income taxpayers, age 60 and older. Call 800-906-9887 or visit irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep to locate a service near you. Also check with AARP, a participant in the TCE program that provides free tax preparation at more than 5,000 sites nationwide. To locate an AARP Tax-Aide site call 888-227-7669 or visit aarp.org/findtaxhelp. You don’t have to be an AARP member to use this service. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

OPINION
www.pomeradonews.com
GUEST COMMENTARY BY JOEL ANDERSON hank you to Mayor Steve Vaus for hosting my recent Poway Community Coffee where the 80-plus attendees peppered me with their questions, shared their ideas and enjoyed coffee generously donated by Employment and Community Options, a Poway non-profit that supports the intellectually disabled community. One of the heartfelt discussions that evening centered on the state’s failure to support the developmentally disabled community which includes intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and disabling conditions closely related to intellectual disability or requiring similar treatment. Jack Cohen, who serves on the Poway Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and as board vice president of a home for adults with developmental disabilities called Noah Homes, explained how continuous state funding cuts are jeopardizing services to this population that isn’t represented by large lobbying firms. Budgets are about priorities, and I believe our state’s developmentally disabled should be a priority within our social safety net. In 1977, California made a promise with the passage of the Lanterman Act to support individuals with disabilities so they could live independent lives with dignity. I was proud that California led the nation in transitioning people out of large state-run hospitals and integrating them into the community while offering meaningful opportunities to live full lives and reach their potential. We started funding early intervention for infants and toddlers to change their developmental trajectory and improve their long-term outcomes. The Lanterman Act created a funding stream to provide services for 300,000 Californians through the State Department of Developmental Services (DDS). DDS contracts with 21 independent, non-profit “regional centers” across the state through which qualifying individuals are able to access the services they need such as supported-living, job training and placement, and life-long individualized case management. During the economic downturn, state spending for services for the developmentally disabled was severely slashed. Yet even as the state’s finances appeared to improve, the governor and legislative leadership refused to prioritize this population. Despite last year’s record state spending and a $3.5 billion surplus, California continually spends the least on services for individuals with developmental disabilities out of all 50 states and less than half of the national average. While cutting provider funding, the state also increased provider costs by mandating new regulations and increasing the cost of labor, bringing this vulnerable population’s network of services to the brink of collapse. Instead of prioritizing the funding for these core services, Governor Brown has removed the developmentally disabled community from the state’s budget and tied their future funding to a shaky new federal tax swap scheme. It’s time that California kept its promise. That’s why I introduced Senate Bill 948, which would prioritize the developmentally disabled by using existing tax dollars to fund providers. The bill sets up a stakeholder process to create a comprehensive approach to funding regional center operations in a sustainable and transparent manner, and it enables regional centers to deliver high-quality services to consumers. It also requires DDS to increase funding to meet labor costs and mandates. If you agree that California must keep the Lanterman Act’s promise, please visit my website at sen.ca.gov/anderson and sign a support letter for SB 948. State Sen. Joel Anderson, a Republican, represents the 38th District, which includes Poway.

OUR READERS WRITE Privacy for all Privacy stalls in the locker rooms to be used by all students would be a legitimate and positive solution for those on both sides of this issue. Clearly, the transgender student at Rancho Bernardo High School is uncomfortable changing in the boys’ locker room (since the student is currently changing in a toilet stall.) If privacy stalls were used by all students, no one would be segregated or singled out. Privacy and modesty would be maintained. I believe that the locker rooms as they have existed for decades are now greatly outdated. When I changed in a locker room as a teenager, it was never a comfortable experience. Now that every student carries a camera/cell phone, the locker room has the potential to be a nightmare. Adding privacy stalls could solve so many locker room issues, including, but not limited, to those discussed at the school board meeting on Feb. 9. In these discussions, respect must prevail on both sides. Unfortunately, that did not happen in some of the comments at the school board meeting. I was shocked when one parent ridiculed and shamed the teenage boys who felt uncomfortable changing next to a female. Just like no transgender student should ever be ridiculed or shamed by others, the boys who have respectfully stated their need for privacy and modesty should never be ridiculed and shamed. I hope that the school board is able to fulfill what they have committed to — a solution that respects the needs and privacy of every PUSD student. Christy Sutherland Rancho Bernardo
It’s time to drop Lyles I think it is time Dick Lyles has been put out to pasture. Maybe he is getting old and bitter like moldy fruit. I must admit that I’ve never read one of his articles in full. The banner above his name is enough to put me off. His diatribe against Hillary Clinton should be the last straw and you should find another writer — unless you support him. Don’t give me this ‘Freedom of Speech’ song. It is you that provides him with space each week to vent his venom. That statement of his should be on a poster Lyles holds up while standing next to guys I’ve seen at the post office with their desk and poster screaming “Impeach Obama.” So he doesn’t like Hillary. He probably doesn’t like
anyone who is not of his political persuasion and does not totally agree with him. But, let me let you in on a little secret. There are many people right here in Rancho Bernardo, and I’ve had the unpleasant experience of meeting some, who totally agree with Lyles and the guys at the post office. But that is OK. We are different. I appreciate that. Perhaps Lyles is still writing because he supports the majority in our community. I am in the minority. But, if you insist upon keeping Lyles, his byline should be changed to Vile Lyles. Finally, I think all opinion writers should be changed periodically. They don’t improve with age. Oscar D. Teel Rancho Bernardo
Another privacy supporter I was impressed with Mrs. Holly Franz’s comments at Tuesday’s school board meeting where student privacy rights were discussed. I also could not help but be affected by the composure of her young son as he spoke to a relatively hostile crowd. It was clear to me that no student should have to submit to what the school expected him to submit to, at the expense of his modesty and decency. I am referring to his account of having a biologically female classmate unexpectedly disrobe next to him in the locker room. I agree with their insistence that the school must provide private and safe changing booths for any child who does not wish to disrobe in front of someone who is opposite in physiology to themselves. Neither should any child have to endure all that comes with being pressured by the school district to watch someone of the opposite physiology disrobe in front of them. Private stalls were the only reasonable solution offered. PUSD must respect our children’s right to privacy and the fundamental desire to be safe. Build private facilities where any child can feel safe and retain personal dignity and modesty. It needs to be done immediately. There will be more of this type of distress and confusion rather than less, especially with school psychologists insisting that gender is all in one’s head. Poway is an extraordinarily decent, family friendly community. Let’s make an attempt to restore decency and respect to the extent possible at PUSD campuses by accommodating children’s privacy rights. A NO BRAINER BY DON HIGGINSON
A reflection on PCPA’s 25 years
R
ecently it was announced that a benefit concert to raise funds for the Tony Gwynn Memorial would be held on April 1 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. What a great idea! And how fortunate Poway is to enjoy such an excellent venue to hold this event. The PCPA, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, has a most unique history. In 1983, the City of Poway established the Poway Redevelopment Agency. Originally, redevelopment agencies were created to provide cities a financing mechanism to improve and develop needed infrastructure. When an agency was created (they were all disbanded by Governor Brown in 2011) the
majority of property taxes that had heretofore been paid by property owners within the agency boundaries, were redirected to the new agency. Prior to the creation of an agency, property taxes were split between various entities including the county, city, school, college and even cemetery districts. In a matter of fair play, the new agency would meet with the effected entities to gain consensus on future wish list items they might now not be able to accomplish. Following city incorporation in 1980 and the creation of the agency in 1983, Poway started addressing needed infrastructure improvements. Agency financing helped make possible the community pool, library, Scripps
Poway Parkway, Sheriff’s station, Community Road, Old Poway Park and numerous sports fields. During this same time period, the city commissioned a community survey and surprising enough, there was a strong interest by the residents for a performing arts facility. However, with other pressing needs, talk of a community arts center waned until it was revived when the agency met with the Poway Unified School District. The district was exploring the need for an auditorium at Poway High for practice space and to showcase the school’s wonderful music and drama departments. With the past success of the gym constructed by the agency as a joint-use project between the city and PUSD at Twin Peaks Middle School, it was a no-brainer for the city and district to agree to build an arts complex that would foster arts education at Poway High while also serving the community. While fundamentally rooted in the purpose to benefit the school and students, this ‘diamond in the rough’ became a symbiotic win-win. A joint-use agreement was drafted and architect secured. John von Szeliski, as chief architect, encountered the difficulty of forging an aesthetic link between a contempary arts center and the low-slung ‘60s era brick-and-concrete design of the high school. John noted at the time, “it’s a long
THE STRAIGHT DOPE BY WILL WOOTON
Social media and its impact on teens
I
f you ask a group of teens, as I have many times, if their attitudes and beliefs are impacted by the music they listen to or television shows they watch, then you know that many are painfully unaware of how heavily they are influenced by these factors. You will likely get answers like “It doesn’t change who I am” or “I’m not that easily influenced.” Our current generation of teens are exposed to more media than any before due to the saturation of smartphones and ubiquitous social media platforms. The two types of influences that we are concerned with are authoritative and group — each has a role in developing attitudes and belief systems that have a profound effect on a person’s behavior throughout their lifetime. It’s obviously false that violent video games or rap music will turn a normal kid into a murderer. Somewhere between that falsehood and the misconception teens have that they are immune to social influences is the truth. In an experiment by David Eagleman, a group of teens and a group of adults were monitors for signs of stress as they were individually put on display in a storefront window. The teen group responded with significantly more stress initially and sustained much
higher levels of stress throughout compared to the adults tested, who had an initial stress spike but settled to normal levels. This means that, as a teen, you are much more impacted by the perception that those around you are judging you. The drive to “fit in” is very strong and taking part in social media on some level is necessary to fit in. Through social media, kids are exposed to their own group speaking with perceived impunity from authority figures. An authority figure does not need to have a uniform, degree or social status. Increasingly I am seeing authority figures who have only a large base of followers re-tweeting their 140 character thoughts or liking their latest Instagram photo. For example, Snoop Dogg has 13.3 million Twitter followers and Joe Rogan has 1.8 million. These two are interviewed extensively in pro-weed documentaries. I often hear from teens that they saw in a documentary (if I’m honest these play more like propaganda films) that it’s harmless to smoke and it’s only illegal so the government can make money putting potheads in jail. The key to this is that the teens believe these are authority figures, as someone with followers, a music or comedy career, and a good agent obviously, has some knowledge that
is worth their time to pay attention to. In the Milgram experiments of the 1960s, it was discovered the extent individuals will go against their own beliefs under order of authority. When a figure with the look of “impeccable authority” told individuals in the experiment to shock someone with a heart condition, two-thirds of them complied with the command even knowing they were potentially killing another person. Our design to comply with authority is a huge influence on our behavior. If you imagine your day-to-day life and what you immerse yourself in and compare that to someone of a totally different culture a world away, the two likely look very different as would your beliefs and attitudes. The same is true when you compare a teen’s social media feed to a parent’s. When repeated exposure normalizes behaviors and authority figures co-sign morally questionable positions, teens are at risk of being influenced to make big mistakes. I urge all parents to pay close attention to the media your kids are consuming and, just as critical, discuss what they believe about it. Wooton is director of Pacific Treatment Services and co-author of “Bring Your Teen Back from the Brink.”
narrow space” (the former parking lot land donated by the school) and “we were most interested in relating the building to Espola Road and Titan Way. … We wanted to present a strong sense of invitation and visibility along the two streets, which is why we used the long curve of glass at the front.” Construction bids for the 45,000-square-foot building came in $2 million above the $5.2 budgeted by the city. Not deterred, we were able to cut the PCPA’s price tag by deleting some amenities, including a stage lift and a water feature out front (guess we realized there might be future water issues). On May 11, 1990, with a black-tie gala and ceremonial ribbon cutting, I was able to thank all who had worked on the PCPA and the following evening Melissa Manchester graced the stage as the center’s very first performer. The PCPA for the past 25 years has provided a wonderful venue for community performing groups and events, as it will once again on April 1 for the Gwynn tribute. Every once in a while, however, we need to stop and remember that the real benefactors of the PCPA, as always intended, are the thousands of budding student musicians and performers who have had the rare opportunity to stand on stage and experience the thrill (and vicarious ‘American Idol’ moment) provided by this fully polished, Poway ‘Jewel.’
FROM LETTERS, A20
Third vote for privacy I would like to send a message out about the privacy rights for all students in school locker rooms, transgender or non-transgender. There really is two sides to this issue that has come up at the last board meeting for Poway Unified School District. This is not about bigotry or being transphobic, but our kids’ constitutional right to privacy. Every student should be able to feel comfortable changing in the locker rooms. I believe it is the school district’s job to look out for the best interest of each student by providing temporary dividers for each child to change comfortably for class. I realized this when I heard about this transgender student changing in a restroom stall in the boy’s bathroom. This student definitely does not feel comfortable changing with the non-transgender boys. Common sense tells me it is imperative to get these dividers up to help all of the students to feel comfortable and not singled out. Nicole Ray Mom of RB High student
Lyles correct about Clinton Political correctness has become so indoctrinated into our society that a repeat felon like Hillary Clinton can unabashedly run for the highest office of the land and have full support of her liberal followers. She cannot even hold a lawyer’s license because of her signature lies, for which she was fired from her employment in the Watergate investigation and from the Rose Law firm early in her career. Hence, she went into politics. What else! Dick Lyles was correct when he wrote in his column that Hillary should be in prison. Yet, several writers in this paper came to her defense. In his Presidential Library, President Harry Truman’s following piece is on display on political correctness, written on Sept. 1, 1945: “Political Correctness is a doctrine, recently fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and promoted by a sick mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of (expletive removal mine) by the clean end!” It has come to the point that one has to be careful in voicing truths for fear of dire consequences from the “offended” adversaries who embrace crime as an entitlement and a norm. I consider political correctness the main cause and effect of most of our world-wide problems. Marie Woodruff Rancho Bernardo

READY FOR CHANGE Titans’ Kiyono tired of second-place finishes at Masters
BY TERRY MONAHAN his is Scott Kiyono’s third Masters Meet week. The Poway junior is hopeful this year is far different than the first two, which ended up with him placing second in his weight class before heading off to wrestle in the State Championship in Bakersfield. Coming off a second straight title in the San Diego Section championships last Saturday, Kiyono now sets his sights on qualifying for a third trip to the state finals. To do that, though, the 5-foot-5 grappler wants to solve the mystery of the Masters Meet. “It’s pretty important to get past being second again,’’ Kiyono said. “I can’t change anything. I have to be myself, do what I do best and hopefully I’ll perform at a peak level.’’ Kiyono brings a 26-4 record into this year’s Masters Meet, which will be staged at Christian High this weekend, after racing to the 134-pound title thanks to three pins and a 9-1 victory in the finals. As a sophomore, Kiyono finished up with a 44-9 record, one win shy of placing in the top eight at state. “I’m excited and ready for the Masters Meet again,’’ Kiyono said. “There’s a pretty tough guy at my weight (Trence Gillem of Helix), who beat me at state last year. “Wrestling Gillem again this weekend will be a great tune-up for what’s coming at the state. “My goal is to finally beat him and get to the top step

He wants to be so good and he’s just starting to blossom.’’ Kiyono acknowledged that his runner-up finish as a freshman was well deserved. “The other guy was No. 2 in the state,’’ he said. “He was way better than me.’’ Last year, though, still haunts Kiyono. Not finishing second but the way it happened. “I made an incredible
mistake in overtime and got pinned,’’ Kiyono said. “I stopped wrestling for a few seconds and got taken down. “I was able to focus on the state the next week so I didn’t dwell on that mistake for long. “But there is still a little scar from that moment.’’ Kiyono has been wearing green for longer than he can remember. He joined the Poway Slammers at age 8 before advancing to Poway Elite.

He has spent years learning his craft in the Poway wrestling building. It was not until a few years later that he began to understand and embrace the Poway tradition in that building. “I used to see all the names on the wall and the championship honors and not really understand what that meant,’’ Kiyono said. “Finally, I understood what the walls were telling me about the Poway tradition.’’ SEE MASTERS, B6

The Del Norte High girls soccer team, fresh off its third straight league championship, will get another chance as the No. 1 seed in the San Diego Section Division I playoffs. The Nighthawks (13-6-2) will play either No. 8 San Marcos or No. 9 Coronado in the quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m. at Del Norte High. The Nighthawks were the top seed in last year’s Division I playoffs, but fell to No. 8 Rancho Buena Vista 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Del Norte hopes to redeem itself Friday and has shown it has what it takes to make a run at the championship. The Nighthawks, who went 9-1 en route to the Avocado East League championship, have won four straight and have scored a combined 14 goals during the streak. Leading the way has been Florida State-bound Dori Moul, who has 17 goals and six assists on the season. Freshman Megan Donovan has scored eight times, while senior Karli Renken has contributed six goals and seven assists. Junior Julia Kappes has five goals and 12 assists. Del Norte is looking to win its first section championship in girls soccer. The Nighthawks played in the Division III title game in 2012, losing 4-0 to Cathedral Catholic.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Hamson vaults way onto court for Titans
BY TERRY MONAHAN Eli Hamson skipped playing basketball as a freshman at Poway since he hadn’t played since sixth grade. He thought about trying out for the team, but dismissed the idea. However, when spring rolled around Hamson again avoided the Titans gym in favor of joining a few friends on the track team to give pole vaulting a shot. “I thought it was exciting,’’ Hamson said of his first attempt. He cleared 7-feet, 6-inches, 8-0 and 8-6 in his first meet. His self-confidence skyrocketed enough for him to return to the basketball court the next year. From being a little used substitute as a sophomore, the 6-foot-3, 175-pound Hamson has been a necessary cog in the Titans’ success story this season. Now 23-6, Poway is headed to the San Diego Section Open Division playoffs with a quarterfinal game Saturday at No. 2 Cathedral Catholic. Being in the Open Division means the Titans will also advance to the state playoffs as well. “We have exceeded our own expectations,’’ Fisher said. “And Eli is a big part of all this.’’ Hamson is the muscle part of the Titans’ operation.
“I’m more of a physical guy in there,’’ he said. “Go get rebounds and push guys around.’’ Count Poway coach Scott Fisher among the most surprised at how far Hamson has come since sophomore year when all he hoped for was a blowout so he could get into the game. “He’s hard-working, unselfish and under-appreciated,’’ Fisher said. “You watch him on film and he’s relentless and that’s how he makes up for any mistakes he makes. “Eli is passionate about surfing, being late to first period, basketball and pole vault. “I’d love to have 12 guys who are as passionate about the game as he is.’’ Hamson is just as shocked as his coach at how much of a contributor he’s become. “When I came back to play I used to play about one minute a game,’’ Hamson said. “I didn’t want to go ask the coach what I had to improve on to play, so I sat and watched. “Then last year I started about three-quarters of the games. This year I started every game. “I’m so shocked. I always loved the game and that love came back even sophomore year sitting on the bench.’’ His skills, though, took almost that whole year to return. Were it not for the confidence boost he discovered upside down in the air while pole vaulting he might never have come back to basketball.
Poway High's Eli Hamson.
SHERRI DUNLAP
Over the summer before junior year, Hamson noticed something new about his game. “Things seemed to be going my way,’’ he said. “That had never happened before. It never occurred to me I could play that well. “Now I want to be on the court all the time.’’ Hamson understands this will be his final days as a basketball player. After he serves a two-year Mormon mission, he’d like to give pole vaulting a try in college. His personal best vault is 14-2.
He would like to graduate from Poway with a PR of 16-0. “That will take a lot of improvement,’’ Hamson said. “Basketball is a team game and we all depend on each other, but in the pole vault it’s just me and the bar. “I’ll talk with the other competitors between attempts, but when my turn is about three guys away I start focusing. “I just look at the bar and go. I don’t hear anything. I don’t see anything but the bar.’’ Monahan is a freelance writer.

Modlin becomes one of top goal finders in Broncos’ history BY TERRY MONAHAN Shane Modlin had left his soccer career behind in favor of playing football as a freshman at Rancho Bernardo High. He noticed something that alarmed him. As opposing players got bigger, faster, stronger, more of his teammates were suffering concussions, the same thing that he saw afflicting players in both college and the NFL. So his two-year football career ended and he returned to soccer. After a so-so junior season in which he scored four goals and had two assists, the 6-foot forward’s game took this year. Modlin entered Wednesday’s San Diego Section Division II playoff game on the brink of a school record he’d never given much thought to until recently. A teammate told him he was nearing the mark for goals in a season. “I just started racking up goals this year when a friend told me I was close to the record,’’ Modlin said. “It wasn’t something I seriously thought about before the season. It’s not like last year was an indicator. “The whole thing just came out of nowhere.’’ Modlin tied the school record with a goal in the regular-season finale against Poway. His 26th goal tied Reed McKenna’s record. Modlin also had three assists in the match. “I really just wanted to have fun and win games,’’ Modlin said. “I didn’t want it to bother me. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. “But it would be nice to get the record, to
SHERRI DUNLAP
Rancho Bernardo High's Shane Modlin. be remembered at my high school.’’ There is plenty that Modlin will be leaving behind in addition to the goal-scoring record. Through his efforts in the Best Buddies Program at Rancho Bernardo, a program designed to help special needs students at the school, Modlin has become far more self-aware than most teenagers. All the simple things in life that are taken for granted by students are things special needs students battle with every day. “It makes me grateful for being able to walk and talk and run without even thinking
A NEW YEAR,
about it,’’ Modlin said. “I am more grateful for what I have than I ever have because I have a lot. “One student’s goal is to walk with a walker before the year is done. That’s something I do without thinking. “We’re all the same. You could be in a car crash and lose the ability to walk. I see guys running half speed at practice and if they spent one day in a wheelchair at school I guarantee they would run 100 percent at practice every day.’’ Modlin and his teammates have dedicated
the remainder of the playoffs to the Sayim brothers, who are sidelined now with injuries — Cengiz with a broken leg and Oguz with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. “Cengiz had surgery and he got eight screws in that leg,’’ Modlin said. “As teenagers, we think we’re bulletproof. Look around at guys like Cengiz and his brother or the kids in the Best Buddies Program. We’re not immune to losing it all.’’ Being a soccer forward, most of Modlin’s time is spent hovering around the opposing goal with all the dangers that go with it. Defenders don’t take kindly to having forward invade their turf. Neither do goalies. Modlin understands the predicament. There is only one way to score goals and that’s endure the wrath of defenders and take the shot. “You’re not going to leave the crease without a bruise or a turf burn,’’ he said, matter-of-factly. “That’s just the way it is for us forwards. “Life is the same way. You don’t get anything just handed to you. Everything comes with a price. “There’s no clear path in life. You have to make your way through all the obstacles.’’ If there is one team that will make sure Modlin reports for graduation it would be Westview. In four games against the Wolverines this year, Modlin has scored seven of his team’s 10 goals. That is awfully productive for a player who stopped playing travel ball four years ago. Monahan is a freelance writer.

FROM MASTERS, B1 Kiyono used to play football and baseball until the repeated trips to Poway caused him to leave those other sports behind. He wanted to join his dad, who competed in high school, as a fulltime wrestler. “I had no idea what I was doing at first,’’ Kiyono said. “Everything the coaches told me was new to me. “Focusing on wrestling was what I wanted to do because I liked not having to rely on anyone for those six minutes on the mat. “I know that sounds selfish, but when the ref raises your arm in victory that’s the best feeling. It’s so hard to describe that feeling.’’ In the moments when Kiyono can relax, he cranks up the music and dances. Break dancing, to be exact. “It seemed like a cool hobby,’’ Kiyono said. “I think I’m pretty good at it.’’ His teammates have coaxed him to break dance on the mat a few times. “Some of them want to learn, but some of them can’t dance,’’ added Kiyono. “It wouldn’t be good if a couple of us got hurt, especially during the season. Coach wouldn’t like that.’’ Monahan is a freelance writer.

Beatles tribute band Abbey Road will perform "In My Life - A Musical Theatre Tribute to the Beatles" on Sunday at the PCPA.
Poway High quartet joins Beatles tribute at PCPA BY EMILY SORENSEN Four talented Poway High students will be going on a Magical Mystery Tour Sunday at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. The Poway High String Quartet “Fourtissma,” made up of Sophia Goepfert on violin 1, Alexis Officer on violin 2, Piper Langer-Weida on viola and Lloyd Black on cello, will be performing four songs on stage during Abbey Road’s production of “In My Life - A Musical Theatre Tribute to the Beatles,” which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the PCPA. Tickets for the show range from $35 to $55 for adults and $25 to $45 for children 12 and under and seniors. There is a $5 convenience fee for buying your tickets online at www.powaycenter.com, or a $3 fee for purchasing them at the box office. “In My Life” tells the story of the Beatles through the eyes of their manager, Brian Epstein, who acts as a narrator during the show. Renowned tribute band Abbey Road portrays the Fab Four, performing 33 of the Beatles’s classic songs, from the Ed Sullivan Show to their final rooftop performance at the Apple Cor. offices. The show in Poway is part of a 125-stop tour of the U.S. and Canada. The show has been touring since 2008. Abbey Road is Nathaniel Bott as John, Christopher Overall as Paul, Zak Schaffer as George and Axel Clarke as Ringo.

ROSANNE CASH Friday Mar. 11 8:00pm The Poway High String Quartet, who will be performing several songs on stage during "In My Life." The quartet, which has been performing together for about a year, will perform the songs “Yesterday,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Hey Jude,” Hello Goodbye” and “A Day in the Life.” “We’re all really excited,” said Goepfert. “It’s a really cool opportunity and we’re all excited to see how it goes.” The quartet found out about the show in November, and has been rehearsing the songs a couple of hours a week ever since, said Black. “It’s been a lot of extra practice,” said Black. Goepfert said the extra rehearsal time was “nothing we couldn’t handle.” The students will meet Abbey Road, the Beatles tribute band putting on the show, to rehearse on Sunday morning before doing the
actual performance in the afternoon. Goepfert said all four students were familiar with the Beatles’s music prior to finding out about the show. “I mostly listen to classical (music), but I make an exception for the Beatles occasionally,” said Black. “They’re pretty much the only modern music I listen to.” The quartet became involved in the show after the producers of “In My Life” approached Mike Cook, director of instrumental music at Poway High, and asked if he knew of an ensemble that could hold their own with a rock band in front of an audience. “In My Life” commonly uses a local quartet to augment the production while touring.
Rosanne, along with co-writer and life partner, John Leventhal, perform.

BUSINESS ASK MR. MARKETING BY ROB WEINBERG
And the winner is ...
I
t’s Oscars season, and all eyes have turned to Hollywood to see if I’ll win the award for Best Hat-Wearing Marketing Professional. I’m told there’s a fair chance I’ll get my own gold statue, despite competition from the likes of John Hamm. While scoping out the Dolby Theater, I spotted the Hollywood sign and was reminded of the importance of signage. Erected in 1923 to advertise a housing development called Hollywoodland, the 50-foot high letters were supposed to stay up 18 months. Then came the movie industry, and the sign took on a life of its own. 1949 saw it shortened to promote the overall Hollywood community. Left to the elements, though, it began deteriorating. By 1973, splintered and broken, the sign looked more like “HuLLYWO_D” and it took five years to
refurbish and again trumpet its presence to the world. Today the revitalized Hollywood sign is one of America’s best-known landmarks, annually drawing millions of tourists from every corner of the globe. This trivia is worth remembering as you consider your own signage and messaging. It’s a rare business that won’t benefit from highly visible, attractive signage. Your signs might be on billboards or vehicles. They might be a mural on the side of your building or in neon astride the highway. It can be artistic, serious, humorous … whatever suits your organization’s personality. Recently I even saw a sign that told a joke, and directed readers to a website for the punch line. Whatever form a sign takes, though, it’s there to help you compete for customer attention, giving you the opportunity to make your pitch and close the deal.
Always work to have signs that complement your branding and your overall marketing message. Develop something that grabs attention, is easily identifiable by members of your target audience and delivers something positive to the community around it. And regardless of how you use it, a properly developed sign should increase consumer interest and grow your bottom line. After all … you’re creating something that we’ll still be talking about in 100 years, right? And whether or not I win, I want to thank the Academy, my parents, daughter, dog and the ever-inspiring Mrs. Marketing … without whose initial guidance to buy a hat I’d be sunburned. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Be a winner with your marketing. Contact Mr. Marketing at askmrmarketing.com.
Treeco Tree Specialists offer hands-on, personal service BY EMILY SORENSEN Need some work done on a tree in your yard? Treeco Tree Specialists can help you maintain your trees. Treeco Tree Services, which operates out of Poway and provides services to all areas of San Diego County, was founded by Rus Mosser in 1975 and is currently owned and operated by his son, Tyler Mosser. “My dad ran the business for 40 years,” said Tyler Mosser. “He retired and sold the business to me in 2003, when I graduated from high school.” Treeco Tree Specialists offers a variety of services, including tree trimming, tree removal, stump grinding, debris removal and 24-hour emergency service. They do not offer landscaping or sprinkler services. One of the most popular services currently is tree removal, because of weather conditions and the drought. Treeco Tree Specialists can handle trees of all shapes and sizes in a safe manner, said Mosser. “(Tree removal) is like a lost art,” he said. “It’s a lot of rigging and rope work.” Treeco Tree Specialists also offers a wide variety of tree trimming services, including ornamental tree trimming and lacing, which stimulates new growth. Mosser said the best time to have your trees laced is between November and March, as it gives the trees the ideal amount of time to have new growth. Treeco Tree Specialists also offers stump grinding, which prevents regrowth and turns the area back into useable land; and debris removal and chipping, which can provide mulch for your property. There is also a 24-hour emergency service, for those times when a tree blows over during high winds or at otherwise inconvenient times. For all the services Treeco Tree Specialists offers,
Rus Mosser, founder of Treeco Tree Specialists, left, with son and current owner Tyler Mosser. the most important thing is direct and personal communication with the customer. “I listen to every word the customer says,” said Mosser. “I like talking to customers, making them feel comfortable that they can go to work and the job will be done safely and without any damage to their property.” Mosser said his company is not as generalized as general tree services, and that they focus on each customer’s needs individually. “I like to go out and look at each property we’re bidding on,” he said. “And we like to leave each property better than how it was when we arrived. I trim trees exactly how I would as if they were my own.” Mosser said he and Treeco Tree Specialists are also focused on making customers for life. “We’re not here to get in and out,” said Mosser. “We want to see you again.” To find out more about the services Treeco Tree Specialists offers or to request service, call 619-993-0655, contact treecotlc@gmail.com or visit treecosandiego.com.
