Board approves bond refunding; privacy stalls to be installed in school locker rooms Refinancing to result in average annual savings of $500,000 BY EMILY SORENSEN The Poway Unified School District Board of Education continued its track record of discord at Tuesday night’s monthly school board meeting. Several major votes ended in a 3-2 or 4-1 split, including a vote to refinance several CFD bonds. The board also disagreed on updating board guidelines, an ongoing project for the board since January, which ended up with the motion tabled after the board members could not reach agreement. The board voted 3-2, with Board President Michelle

San Diego Women’s Week opens Monday BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Time is running out to purchase discounted tickets for the seventh annual San Diego Women’s Week that starts Monday. The last day to buy advance tickets online is Sunday for the educational and empowerment event organized by the North San Diego Business Chamber. The 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday session will be held at Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte, Rancho Bernardo. Its theme is “Women and Wine.” It will include wine and food tasting, art demonstrations, shopping, live music, networking and swag bags. The anticipated 300 attendees can bring a few business clothing items they no longer wear and swap them with up to two items someone else brings. For each clothing item they bring, attendees will receive a raffle ticket for prizes, according to Samantha Nawrocki, the winery’s marketing manager. There will also be philanthropic opportunities. The winery has partnered with the Alabaster Jar Project, a North County-based organization that provides safe housing, rehabilitation and empowerment to women and young girls affected by human trafficking and sexual exploitation in San Diego, Nawrocki said. “We thought San Diego Women’s Week would be a great opportunity to raise awareness of human trafficking of girls and women living in our communities … and provide ways for attendees to help this great organization and the girls they support,” she said. “The Alabaster Jar Project … reaches out to and provides essential resources to people affected by a growing problem. We want to help raise awareness and support what they’re doing.” Attendees may donate their old costume jewelry to the project or purchase jewelry handmade by the women and girls it has helped. They can also bring new or gently worn baby clothes for babies in need. The clothes will be included in gift bags distributed by Gently Hugged, which is based at the winery. San Diego Women’s Week will start with the opening session from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 14 at the California Center

PUSD names Classified Employees of 2016 BY EMILY SORENSEN Poway Unified School District has named Christa McIntosh and Nancy Dannhauser as its 2016 Classified Employees of the Year. McIntosh is a library media technician at Stone Ranch Elementary School. Dannhauser is an attendance and discipline administrative assistant II. The two winners were surprised at work by district employees and coworkers on Feb. 24, where they learned of their win and were presented with flowers. The district classified employees of the year are selected by a committee of district and site representatives based on work performance, contributions to the school district and community service. One classified employee is selected to represent school sites, and the other to represent district departments. The San Diego County Office of Education also sponsors a Classified Employee Recognition Program, honoring up to six members of the classified service for all of San Diego County. This year’s PUSD nomination for the county-wide recognition is Dannhauser. McIntosh is the library media technician at Stone Ranch, which has almost 1,000 students. Its

library has the highest circulation in the district because McIntosh and her staff allow more than one book to be checked out at a time. She also has collected donations and organized used book sales to increase resources in the library for students. McIntosh also serves the staff at Stone Ranch, making sure their needs are met by providing books to support curriculum lessons, book sets for study and assisting teachers with resources for research projects. She also makes sure to stay current with new technology tools and resources and attends district

collaboration meetings between library media technician colleagues and well as attending county-offered training. Dannhauser is an administrative assistant II in attendance and discipline, and is described by her supervisors as “bright, resourceful and diligent in completing tasks,” according to a press release from the district. Dannhauser improves office practice and takes the initiative to research ways to infuse technology into the district, which increases efficiency and access for parents SEE PUSD, A23

hen the homesteaders and other pioneer families settled in the Poway area during the last third of the 19th century, it was important to them that their children attend school. Mary van Dam, daughter of the pioneer who went on to become a beloved teacher in Poway, wrote in her memoir, “As I Remember Poway,” that: “Poway’s school district (then using the traditional spelling of ‘Paguay’) was organized in 1871, the eleventh one in the county, and the largest one in area. It was not until 1885 that a school ground was acquired and a school building erected. The school house was a two-story building and it stood where our first fire station (was) ... on the west side of what is now Community Road and north of Poway Road. Prior to that, classes had been held in a private home.” With a small number of families spread over an expansive area, no public transportation and primitive roads, getting children to school was a major challenge for the families. For this reason, three separate school districts, each with its own one-room schoolhouse, were taken from the original Poway district. Bernardo was to the north, with its original school located west of where Lake Poway is now; Stowe was to the east, near the entrance to the Gooden Ranch on Sycamore Canyon Road; and Merton was to the southwest, near the current intersection of Poway and Pomerado roads.

POWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Students and their teacher outside Poway Union School on Community Road. Van Dam recalled that she and her sister, whose family ranch was in the area where today’s Target Center stands, had to walk at least three miles to Bernardo School, passing only one other farmhouse on the way. Poway’s population languished around the turn of the century, due to drought and the failure of a railroad to materialize. Eventually the other three schools — beginning with Stowe in 1906 — had to close when they couldn’t meet minimum attendance figures. In 1920, Poway, Merton and Bernardo merged as Pomerado Union School, with a single school at the Community Road site. The one-room schools from Bernardo and Merton were moved onto the Pomerado school property as auxiliary buildings. (One later was moved to Olive Tree Lane to become part of a private home and the other was later burned in a firefighting exercise for the Poway Fire Department.) Along with the

consolidation of the three elementary school districts, came the school’s first bus, a converted Model-T truck. Children from all around Poway could now ride the bus to and from school. A handsome new Pomerado School — stucco with a red tile roof — was built on Midland Road in 1926. It contained two classrooms, an auditorium with a raised stage, restrooms, a kitchen and a library. In 1948, the school had an enrollment of only 89 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. For a brief period in the 1890s, Poway had a high school for students in the Poway and Bernardo districts, which opened with 18 students and met in the Independent Order of Good Templars Hall on Midland Road. According to an article in the Oct. 5, 1895 issue of Poway Progress: “The list of studies thus far taken up is as follows: Composition and Rhetoric, Ancient History, Algebra, Higher Arithmetic, SEE SHEPARDSON, A8

Rancho Bernardan still training California Chrome BY LESLIE CARTER Art Sherman, thoroughbred horse trainer, moved to Rancho Bernardo in 2012, not to retire, but to be closer to his racing clients clustered in the North County near Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Back then, he was unaware that his life was on a super-charged upward trajectory. A life-changing colt came under his care in 2013 — California Chrome — who won the 2014 Santa Anita Derby, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and despite missing out on a Belmont Stakes win, was voted Horse of the Year for 2014. The chestnut who flashes four white feet and a striking white blaze, also made Sherman, then 77, the oldest trainer to win America’s most famous race. Legions of fans, dubbed Chromies, attend races often wearing green and purple and follow everything Chrome on Facebook. California colt with humble beginnings gets second chance at world’s richest race. Now California Chrome is in Dubai, waiting for another crack at the $10 million Dubai World Cup, and acclimating to the track and the desert heat. “He’s training like a beast,” reports assistant trainer and Art’s son, Alan Sherman, from Dubai. Among his rivals for the March 26 World Cup will be talented U.S. thoroughbreds Frosted and Keen Ice. “That’s fine,” says Sherman. “To be a good horse, you don’t duck anybody. I think I’ve

Dumb Ass Partners sought out Steve Sherman who runs Sherman Racing at Golden Gate Fields. They wanted the prestigious Southern California circuit, so Steve suggested Art as the trainer. “He had talent,” Art Sherman says. “The first time I breezed him I knew that he could run a little bit. As a two year old he won a stakes (The Grade 1 Graduation at Del Mar).”

LESLIE CARTER

Let’s see where we’re at.” Chrome is the richest California-bred ever with earnings at close to $6.5 million. Win the World Cup and he’ll be in the $13 million range, the richest thoroughbred ever. He won a prep race on Feb. 25 at the World Cup distance of 1 ¼ mile carrying 132 pounds. Superstar Chrome had a blue collar start. Breeders Perry Martin and Steve Coburn

became acquainted in a Northern California racing partnership. Together they purchased a mare who had won one race for them. Love the Chase cost $8,000 and they were labeled “dumb asses to buy that horse.” Thus, the “Dumb Ass Partnership.” For $2,500, they bred her to the undistinguished Lucky Pulpit, a son of the successful Pulpit — producing a promising chestnut colt with white markings. The name, by luck of a draw out of a hat, became California Chrome.

After his world travels, a new Kentucky home awaits Chrome after 2016. Chrome soared in 2014, but 2015 was a downturn. The team shepherded Chrome to the Dubai World Cup where he placed second. But Chrome’s principal owner decided England, an English trainer, and the Prince of Wales Stakes on the grass at Royal Ascot were next. But Chrome suffered a bruised foot and was withdrawn. The Arlington Million in Chicago was planned, but there was another training injury. By August, Chrome’s world had changed. Coburn sold his shares to Taylor-Made Stallions in Lexington, Kentucky, where Chrome was sent for some rest and recuperation. He will return there in late 2016 to begin his career at stud. A few shares were sold to breeders, who will send Chrome their best mares. His silks are now silver-gray, replacing the green and purple with the donkey on the back. His ownership is California Chrome LLC. SEE CHROME, A8

Geometry, Zoology, Physics and Latin.” When the school couldn’t be sustained, students who wished to continue their studies had to attend Escondido High School. For most, this meant spending the week with a family in Escondido, returning home on weekends. In 1928, Poway officially became part of Escondido Union High School District, but there wouldn’t be a high school in Poway again for nearly 65 years after the original one closed. The arrival of municipal water in Poway in 1954, and the annexation of Rancho Bernardo to the City of San Diego in 1961, brought explosive growth to the school district. Pomerado School was expanded — and renamed Midland School, as the old name was needed for a new elementary school built on Pomerado Road. In 1959, the name of the district was changed to Poway Union School District. Poway High School opened in the fall of 1961 as a part of Escondido Union High School District. Shortly thereafter, the new Poway school was acquired from the Escondido district and became part of the Poway Unified School District. By 1971, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Poway district, it had grown to four elementary schools (Midland, Pomerado, Garden Road and Valley), Meadowbrook Intermediate School and Poway High School. The school district, which extends well beyond Poway’s city limits, now includes 26 elementary schools, six middle schools, five comprehensive high schools and Abraxas continuation high school. Almost two-thirds of the schools are outside the Poway city limits. Little could those parents who, 145 years ago, established the Poway school district have imagined what it would grow into. Shepardson is vice president of the Poway Historical Society.

Training for his final racing season begins in California. Chrome arrived back at Sherman’s Los Alamitos barn last October, a bigger and stronger animal, to be greeted by a happy trainer. When visited at Los Alamitos in January, Art Sherman demonstrated the philosophy of horse racing. “I think he’ll be a different horse coming into this race. As a 5-year-old he has matured and is so much stronger. I look for some good things to keep happening — let me knock wood.” Art leans over to tap the bench outside his office with his knuckles. “Just hoping that everything goes good.” After Chrome’s retirement, Art — the guy who started out as an exercise boy in the ‘50s, and traveled in a boxcar with the legendary Cal-bred Swaps when he captured the Kentucky Derby in 1955, and then won more than 2,000 races as a jockey, and a like number as a trainer — will tell his and Chrome’s story in a book. One more thing that will keep those Chromies lining up to celebrate their hero. Carter is a freelance writer.

Pomerado Elementary Nonpartisan by-mail voters receives $5,000 grant need to check status Staff and students at Poway’s Pomerado Elementary School received a $5,000 Barona Education Grant from the Barona Band of Mission Indians this week. Sheilla Alvarez, director of government affairs for the Barona Band of Mission Indians, presented the check to Principal Luis Ortiz. Pomerado Elementary officials said they plan to use the funds to enhance the campus’ after-school program by purchasing materials to further develop a variety of clubs ranging from drama and music to chess, gardening and multi-media. “After-school programs and clubs are an effective and fun way for children to learn, develop skills, and build confidence,” said Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, who sponsored the grant. “Barona’s Education Grant will aid in the development of Pomerado Elementary students by allowing children to discover new strengths and interests.” “Education and development doesn’t end when the bell rings and is often enhanced by participation in school clubs and extracurricular activities,” said Clifford LaChappa, Barona Band of Mission Indians chairman. “We’re excited that our Barona Education Grand will help Pomerado Elementary to expand its after-school program.” Since 2006, the Barona Band of Mission Indians has awarded over $2.6 million to 532 schools statewide to help bridge school budget gaps and share resources through its Barona Education Grant Program.

Deadline is April 13

Participating in the grant presentation are, from left, Pomerado Elementary Principal Luis Ortiz, Assemblyman Brian Maienschein and Sheilla Alvarez, director of government affairs for the Barona Band of Mission Indians. Officials said the program is the first of its kind in California created and administered by a tribal government. The program’s goal is to create strong educational opportunities for the children of California building upon the success of the Barona Indian Charter School, which operates under a continuous improvement model. Schools throughout California can apply for educational grants from Barona to purchase much-needed supplies and materials that promote academic improvement. Each grant awarded by the Barona Education Grant Program is $5,000. Applications can be downloaded at barona-nsn.gov/education.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY NEWS CENTER Heads up if you are registered as a No Party Preference — or nonpartisan — voter and you get your ballot by mail. The Registrar of Voters wants you to know presidential candidates will not be listed on your ballot. If you’d like to vote for a presidential candidate in the June primary, you must take action. “Don’t be caught by surprise,” said County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu. “Make sure you get the mail ballot you need to vote for your presidential candidate.” The Registrar’s office is sent out more than 300,000 postcards to nonpartisan vote-by-mail voters last week to let them know they have choices including requesting a ballot for one of three political parties: American Independent, Democratic or Libertarian. Those parties are allowing nonpartisan voters to take part in their elections. Selecting one of these political party ballots will not permanently change your party registration but will allow you to vote

for the presidential candidate of any one of the above parties for the June 7 Presidential Primary Election. Choose which of the party ballots you’d like to receive for the primary on the postage paid postcard and return it by April 13. The Green, Peace and Freedom, and Republican parties allow only registered members of their parties to take part in their presidential primary elections. If you want to vote for the presidential candidate of one of these political parties, you should check your party preference at sdvote.com. If it is different, you will need to re-register with that party before May 23. You can re-register to vote online. If your signature is confirmed through Department of Motor Vehicles records, it will automatically be sent to the Registrar of Voters office. If the signature is not confirmed, print the form, sign it and mail it to the Registrar or you can drop it off in person at the Registrar’s office in Kearny Mesa. By state law, the Registrar must have your original signature. For additional information, call 858-565-5800 or visit sdvote.com.

Poway woman celebrates 100th birthday BY EMILY SORENSEN Dorothy Hildreth of Poway celebrated her 100th birthday on Feb. 15, but that’s just a pit stop on the way to her ultimate goal. Hildreth, who moved to Poway with her husband, Beach, in 1985, said she wants to live to be 114 — to beat the record of Neva Morris of Ames, Iowa, where Hildreth raised her family. Morris, who died in April 2010, lived to be 114 years, 246 days. “I plan to live to be 114 because the oldest lady in the U.S. lived in Ames, Iowa. I knew Neva,” said Hildreth, “and I’m going to beat her record.” Family and friends gathered in Templars Hall in Old Poway Park to celebrate with Hildreth, where they presented her with a cake. Approximately 60 relatives and friends attended the party, some coming from Florida and Maryland. Hildreth, who is in good health and gets around with a walker, still lives on her own in the home she and her late husband, who died in 2009 at the age of 96, moved into in 1985, when they moved from Iowa to be closer to their sons and newly born first grandchild. Now, Hildreth has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her younger son, Kent, and his family live nearby in Scripps Ranch. Born and raised in Iowa, Hildreth’s family initially ran a grocery store before moving to the country to open a dairy. Their farmhouse had no running water or indoor toilet. “The biggest change (in my lifetime) has been the conveniences,” she said. “When I was a child, in order to do laundry, we had to haul water from

rinse the soap out, before wringing the clothes out and hanging them on a clothesline. They also sometimes used a scrubboard, which Hildreth still owns. “It’s far different now,” she said. “This morning, I put the clothes in the washing

machine and pressed a button.” Hildreth said her family always owned businesses, and she developed a business sense and competitive spirit early on. At 12, her attempt to bake a chocolate cake for the county fair was ruined when a sweet potato fell from the rack above in the oven and destroyed the cake. Her mother told her to try again next year, but undaunted, Hildreth made a new cake and won first place — which angered several of the older entrants in the competition, she said. She also helped in her parents’ dairy, bottling over 100 quarts of milk a day when she was in seventh grade. “I always worked in the businesses we owned,” said Hildreth. In 1936, she married Beach. “It was two years after I graduated from high school, in the middle of the Depression,” said Hildreth. “Those were really tough times.” Hildreth started her own business in the 1960s, selling collectibles like plates and figurines out of a high-end storefront in Ames. She kept the business up by mail order after moving to Poway for awhile, and still receives cards from former customers, she said. She attributes her good health and longevity to always being very active and having a positive personality. “We were always in business, and when you’re in business, you always keep on a happy face,” said Hildreth. “I’ve also always been very active, working growing up, raising two boys and running my own shop.” Genetics also plays a part, as her mother lived to be 100 as well. “But I’m in a lot better health than she was,” said Hildreth.

FROM STIPENDS, A1 meeting. By state law, councilmembers can increase their pay by up to 5 percent annually. That has not happened in Poway. Under government code provisions, the council could increase its salary by a maximum of 40 percent, though this was not supported by the council at the Feb. 2 meeting. The 14.5 percent increase mirrors salary increases to city staff since 2008. Each councilmember currently makes $1,167 per month while the mayor receives that plus an extra $300. If the new plan is passed on Tuesday, councilmembers will receive $1,336 per month while the mayor will be paid $1,871 each month beginning in 2017. The increased amount of stipend for the mayor was adopted in 1997 as the position requires increased time demands from those of councilmembers. In addition to their salaries, the mayor and council each receive $3,600 a year in car allowances along with city-paid health, dental and vision insurance. (The city pays 50 percent of dependent coverage.) Members contribute between 6 and 7 percent of their earnings into a pension fund. The city also gives them $600 a year for cell phone expenses or $900 a year for a smartphone with a required data package.

The increased salary cost for a full fiscal year if this ordinance is adopted will be approximately $13,000. The council will also be asked to approve some classification changes for several positions within the Safety Services management team, sparked by the vacancy of two of the three Fire Division Chief positions. This will also give the city the opportunity to improve emergency response times and enhance organizational effectiveness with the changes in structure and classification, and will move Poway toward an industry standard. A damaged storm drain pipe under Pomerado Road at Twin Peaks Road will also be getting some emergency attention at the March 15 meeting. The council will be asked to declare an emergency within the City of Poway due to the damaged storm drain, which will allow the city to suspend the notice and bidding requirements for the repair and complete emergency repairs without the delay from a public notice and bidding process. The damaged storm drain is a 60-inch corrugated metal pipe installed in 1974. This damaged pipe is what caused a sinkhole to form on Jan. 12 at the intersection of Pomerado and Twin Peaks roads.

FROM BOARD, A1 its bond sales has drawn some controversy in the past, as the corporation acquired Stone and Youngberg several years ago. Stone and Youngberg was one of the companies involved in the sale of the controversial Capital Appreciation Bonds, or CABs, that will cost taxpayers in the district nearly $1 billion over the next 40 years. While Beatty expressed concern over the underwriter’s discount during a discussion on this item, among other points, neither she or Sellers gave a reason during the meeting for voting no on the refunding. The board also clashed over its developing board guidelines, which board members began working on in January. Beatty brought up several concerns she had with the guidelines, saying that several were possibly illegal or violated free speech rights for the board members. Several of the guidelines proposed had been taken from other school districts, O’Connor-Ratcliff said,

including Palo Alto and Coronado. Beatty said that she had contacted members of the Palo Alto Board of Education, who didn’t recognize the guidelines. Beatty asked O’Connor-Ratcliff where she had found these guidelines, as it said Palo Alto on the page, and O’Connor-Ratcliff confirmed that the guidelines were from multiple school districts and that she had told Beatty this at a previous meeting. O’Connor-Ratcliff also said that one of the guidelines that Beatty was objecting to had been requested to be inserted into the board’s guidelines by Beatty herself, and that neither Beatty or Sellers had responded to multiple requests from O’Connor-Ratcliff for feedback on the guidelines. O’Connor-Ratcliff requested that the approval of the guidelines be tabled for now, since she wanted the board to be unanimous in approving the guidelines. The board voted 4-1 to table the item, with Patapow voting no. Supt. John Collins and district staff also gave an update on the privacy issues in school locker rooms

raised at the February board meeting, after a Rancho Bernardo High School student and his parent complained about having to change in the locker room in front of a transgender student. That meeting drew hundreds of attendees, both in support of the transgender student and the student filing the complaint. The district has decided to install privacy stalls in all lockers rooms in all middle and high schools in the district, what is being called a “first step solution.” As male and female locker rooms are different, and each school’s locker rooms differ, these privacy stalls will require individual plans to be developed for each locker room. Construction on the stalls, which are intended to be used by anyone who wishes for privacy, will begin with Rancho Bernardo High School over the spring break. The rest will follow as plans are developed and funding is secured. The next monthly board meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5 at the district office, 15250 Avenue of Science in Carmel Mountain Ranch.

RB man fires gun inside his home SAN DIEGO (CNS) — A Rancho Bernardo man was transported to a local hospital on Saturday for a mental evaluation after allegedly firing several gunshots inside his home, according to San Diego police. The man called 911 late Saturday morning to report what he said were burglars inside his house at 12171 San Tomas Place in Rancho Bernardo, Officer Frank Cali said. The San Diego Police Department issued a neighborhood alert for residents to shelter in place within a four-block area, but lifted the alert about 10 minutes later. When officers arrived, they found no one else in the house besides the gunman. No one was injured. Officers accompanied him to the hospital. His identity was not released.

Savvy Senior BY JIM MILLER

How retirees can save on prescription eyeglasses Dear Savvy Senior, What tips can you recommend for finding affordable prescription eyeglasses? I used to have vision insurance through my work, but lost it when I turned 65, retired, and signed up for Medicare. Looking For Eyeglasses Dear Looking, Prescription eyeglasses today aren’t cheap. You can easily spend $200 for a basic pair, but if you want designer frames or need bifocal or progressive lenses the price can more than double. Here are a few different options that can help you save. ■ Medicare/Insurance Coverage If you are a Medicare beneficiary, you already know that original Medicare (Part A and B) and Medigap supplemental policies do not cover routine eye exams or eyeglasses (unless you’ve just had cataract surgery), but there are some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans that do.

Many of these plans, which are sold through private insurance companies, cover vision as well as dental, hearing and prescription drugs, in addition to all of your hospital and medical insurance. To locate Advantage plans in your area that provides vision coverage, visit Medicare.gov/find-a-plan or call 800-633-4227. But before enrolling in a plan, check the benefit details to ensure the plan’s vision coverage includes routine eye exams, eyeglass frames and lenses. You can switch from original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan each year during the open enrollment period, which is between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. If, however, you don’t want a Medicare Advantage plan, you can still get coverage by purchasing an inexpensive vision insurance policy — see eHealthInsurance.com. Policy costs vary depending on where you live, but they usually start at around $6 to $9 per month for an individual. Before signing up, make sure your savings potential is worth

the cost of the premiums and copays. ■ Discount Stores Purchasing eyeglasses from discount retailers is another way to save. Costco is one of the best discount stores for good eyewear and low prices. Eyeglasses cost an average of around $150, but to shop there you have to pay a $55 annual membership fee. Some other good retail options for low prices include For Eyes Optical, BJ’s Optical, Sam’s Club and Walmart. You also need to find out if you are eligible for any discounts. Many retailers provide discounts to membership groups like AARP and AAA. AARP members, for example, can get 30 percent off a pair of prescription eyeglasses as well as discounts on eye exams at any LensCrafters, most participating Pearle Vision, Sears Optical, Target Optical, JCPenney Optical and thousands of private optometrist offices. ■ Look Online Buying eyeglasses online can also offer huge savings. Some online stores like ZenniOptical.com, Goggles4u.com and EyeBuyDirect.com sell prescription eyeglasses for as little as $7 plus shipping. These sites let you upload a photo of your face, so you can see what you’d look like in different frames. Or, for a fancier choice of frames see WarbyParker.com, which offers single-vision glasses for $95. They even offer a free program where you can request up to five pairs to try on at home for five days. To purchase glasses online, you’ll need

your eyeglass prescription from a local eye doctor, plus your pupillary distance number, which is the distance, measured in millimeters, between the centers of your pupils in each eye. ■ Low-Income Assistance If your income is low, depending on where you live, there may be some local clinics that provide free or discounted eye exams and eyeglasses. Put in a call to your local Lions Club to see what’s available in your area. See directory.lionsclubs.org for contact information. You may also be able to get free eyeglasses through New Eyes (new-eyes.org, 973-376-4903), a nonprofit organization that provides free eyeglasses through a voucher program to people in financial need. — Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Get Back in the Game with Sports Medicine at Arch Health Partners When athletes suffer a sports-related accident or experience musculoskeletal injuries from improper form, they seek treatment and rehabilitation from specialists in sports medicine. However, it’s not just an obvious injury that requires treatment. Often times, athletes experience a lull in performance, but if that lull extends into a period of performance plateau or decline, combined with muscle soreness, these can be subtle symptoms of overuse or overtraining. While it is good practice to expand your physical limits and set fitness goals, overtraining occurs when an athlete pushes these limits too hard, and the

body does not have time to adjust and recover between workouts. In addition to negatively impacting your overall peak performance levels, overtraining can cause injury to your joints, tissues, and bones. If you currently experience any of the following symptoms, you could be overtraining: Amenorrhea (missed periods), constant fatigue, decreased strength and endurance, mood swings, increased occurrence of injury and illness, insomnia, or persistent muscle soreness. Our physician specialists have experience working with athletes to treat and prevent injury during intense exercise. If you believe overtraining could be affecting your physical performance, talk with one of our orthopedic specialists to discuss how to safely increase your training routine without risking injury. A Special Commitment to Student Athlete Safety As sports medicine specialists, our orthopedic team understands the importance of instilling safe training practices early in an athlete’s career. Arch Health Partners is proud to work with local schools to provide sports physicals for team activities. Our physicians have a history of working in the community as

GUEST COMMENTARY

A smarter way to fight wildfires BY SCOTT PETERS ast year, 6,300 wildfires burned over 300,000 acres across California. In May 2014, more than a dozen wildfires broke out in San Diego County alone, burning 26,000 acres, taking one life, and costing home and business owners $29.8 million. Five years into the worst drought in California’s history, we know the devastation that comes from wildfire seasons paired with severe drought conditions. Since coming to Congress, I have made it a priority to get our communities the resources they need to protect lives and property from the threat of wildfires. This past year I helped pass a plan that fully funds the 10-year average of what we spend putting out wildfires across the country. It also makes an additional $600 million available for communities to better prepare for, prevent and recover from wildfires. This is a critical step forward, but doesn’t yet fix the systemic problem of Washington not budgeting and planning properly for wildfires — the natural disasters of the West. Every year the federal government allocates funds for both wildfire prevention and response. Under the current system, when we run out of funds to fight the wildfires that are already burning we dip into the money set aside for prevention. This has happened seven of the last 14 years. Since coming to Congress, I have been building support to pass the “Wildfire Disaster Funding Act,” which is a fiscally responsible proposal to fixing this dangerous, broken approach. It reclassifies wildfires to treat them the same as other natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes. This would open the existing disaster contingency fund to cover part of the cost of wildfire response. In 2014, I led the charge to force a vote on this bill. While that effort came up short, this broadly bipartisan proposal now has 145 cosponsors in the House of Representatives and support from organizations across the political spectrum. In October, I hosted Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell in San Diego County to enlist her support as well. We toured the areas burned by the May 2014 fires, examined communities that are at high risk from longer and more severe fire seasons, and agreed that we must fix the broken federal funding approach. Just as the drought and changing climate are causing our wildfire seasons to become more severe, we are stealing resources away from the programs designed to prevent fires. By September of last year, we had already transferred $700 million from prevention to firefighting efforts. This means fewer resources for institutions like CalFire to clear forests and conduct prescribed burns that protect wildfire-prone communities. It’s impossible to know how many fires could have been prevented or their effects lessened by better-funded prevention efforts. For all of us who have seen first-hand the destruction that wildfires cause, there is no question that they are natural disasters. Our local authorities are better prepared to fight wildfires now than they ever have been, and they should not have to choose between disaster relief and other necessary programs. I will continue pushing to fix this broken federal funding system to get our region the resources it needs to protect itself from wildfires. Peters, a Democrat, represents the 52nd District of California in the House of Representatives. The district covers much of central San Diego County, including Poway, Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Sabre Springs and Rancho Penasquitos.

OUR READERS WRITE Reader responds to letter writer Reading the letter from Mr. Oscar D. Teel “It’s time to drop Lyles” in the Feb. 25 paper, I assumed this was just another diatribe from a Robespierresque-millennial, know-nothing snowflake living in his mom’s spare bedroom. We all know what happens when you assume something, so I did a little digging. Am I to believe that this is the very same Oscar Teel who supports the Tuskegee Airman, those noble gentlemen that put their lives on the line to fight fascism and totalitarianism? The one who opposed Jim Crow, black segregation and retired from the USAF? It seems to me that Mr. Teel has learned

nothing in his time spent on this planet. Because when he hears something that he disagrees with, his mind slams shut and seeks to banish the opinions of others. Seems to fit the leftist narrative these days. Now that it appears that Ms. Amy Roost has left us wanting, I nominate Mr. Teel to replace her hilarious leftist agitprop. Perhaps it’s time to step up Mr. Teel and explain to us why you think a disingenuous, sociopathic traitor like Hillary Clinton should become the president of the United States. Donald Trump in translation

I

’ve studiously avoided trying to understand Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. But turns out approximately 25 percent of Americans approve of divisive, bloviating megalomaniacs. So, Mr. Trump, you have my attention and I’m now going to do my best to try to understand you. Fortunately, one night, sleeplessly worrying about a Trump presidency, I saw an informercial on TV for a Donald Trump Decoder Ring. I ordered one. The first thing I entered in the decoder was your promise to “Make America great again!” It didn’t take long for my ring to provide the following translation: “When Donald Trump says he will ‘Make America great again’ it is code for Donald Trump will ‘Make America white again.’” While startling, there’s evidence to back this up. Recently you refused to condemn former KKK leader David

Duke’s endorsement, and you tolerate a white nationalist PAC making robocalls in support of your candidacy. You want to ban Muslims from entering the United States and make those already here register with the government (if you’re literate enough to read history books, take a moment to let that sink in). You promise to build a wall to keep Mexicans out of the country and plan to round up and deport 11.5 million undocumented immigrants even though you won’t say how you will accomplish this or how much it would cost. Finally, you align yourself with the birthers contending that President Obama’s published birth certificate is a forgery. By itself, questioning the president’s citizenship is not racist. However, considering you fan flames of a conspiracy theory that is circulated by hate groups, that supports the decoder’s conclusion that you like your presidents white and your country whiter. Next, I asked the decoder ring to help

TAKING THE POINT POSITION BY ALLEN HEMPHILL

Nominate George Will to the Supreme Court

I

admit that I do not understand the positions of the various Supreme Court justices. English is my native tongue. I read and understand the language, and the Constitution is written in plain English language. How there can be such contentious disagreements of the Constitution is a foreign concept to me. How many opinions can there be of the word “no” as in the First Amendment? How many opinions of the words “shall not be abridged” can there be in the Second Amendment? And, perhaps most importantly, the 10th Amendment says quite specifically that if the Constitution does not give the federal government the power to do it (as it does the military), the subject is the right of the states to decide! Now here it must be noted that conservatives are as guilty of ignoring the 10th Amendment as are

the liberals. The court, being the federal seat of judicial power, is as reluctant to surrender that to the states as is Congress and the presidency. Even when I went to school a million years ago, the “Living Constitution” concept was being taught, but that concept is absolutely bogus. It is a concept that says that “no” can be interpreted to mean “yes” if the justices believe the culture says it should be done. Disregard the ability to amend the Constitution, as provided for in the Constitution itself ... that just takes so long, it’s too complicated and so five justices can just change the Constitution to suit themselves. I find it strange that the term “red” can be interpreted to mean “blue” if the society decides so (as deemed by the justices), that “murder” can be construed to mean “robbery.” I have written and published

me understand what is meant by all the name calling to which you resort. I entered into my decoder some insults that you’ve hurled at your opponents. Words such as pathetic, stupid, boring, weak, horrible, loser, pussy, idiot, slob, fat pig and dumb-dumb. I also told my ring that you enjoy making fun of others’ appearances, for instance Carly Fiorna’s face, Rosie O’Donnell’s weight, Marco Rubio’s ears and Rand Paul’s height. All this from a man whose hair is — to be kind — a mistake. Not surprisingly, it said that your insulting others was a cover up for your own insecurities. It went on to contend that if you had anything substantive to say you wouldn’t need to resort to insults; and finally, that “anyone so thin-skinned that he’d invoke ‘Hiroshima-like’ retaliation when a reporter suggests he has his facts wrong is himself pathetic.” I was very curious to know what you meant when you tweeted “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep,” a quote from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. I thought the decoder would state the obvious, that you are a demagogue at best and a fascist at worst, but that’s not all it said. It also told me this: “Donald Trump is lazy and as impetuous as an unattended child in a candy shop. He sees something shiny and he grabs it. He encounters someone standing in his way, and he launches personal attacks. He can’t be troubled with getting his facts straight or even knowing where his quotes come from. This ignorance thousands of newspaper columns, and I contend that, since the Constitution does not require that a justice of the Supreme Court be an attorney, we nominate a “wordsmith” like George Will! Because the Constitution was not written in legalese but rather in plain English, justices need not be attorneys. I contend that attorneys are not even desirable, because they over think the Constitution instead of simply applying the words as written. Lawyers are incapable of just applying the written word, they are accustomed to trying to find loopholes. I believe George Will should be the next justice of the Supreme Court. He understands the English language as it was written ... and at least the terms in the Constitution remain the same today as the day they were written. Fortunately, the thinking of the Founders was well documented in articles and letters should there be any question, but I trust Pulitzer Prize winning George Will, author of six books, numerous columns and former professor of political philosophy. He studied at Trinity College, Princeton and Oxford. “The Constitution is not a living organism, it is a legal document. It says something and doesn’t say other things.” Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Reach Hemphill, an occasional columnist, at ahemphill@cox.net.

is giving him the benefit of the doubt. If he knowingly is an admirer of and meant to quote Mussolini, that’s even more disturbing. He shoots first and explains later with a laugh, a shrug and the excuse that he doesn’t have time for political correctness and what’s more, ‘nobody knows.’” Political candidates have always appealed to passions and patriotism, but you, Mr. Trump, forge bonds by playing off people’s fear of the other, and anxiety over the country’s changing economic and demographic landscapes. For good measure, you invoke American exceptionalism which your supporters confuse with patriotism rather than the hubristic reckless behavior that it is. I was so upset with my ring’s translations, I asked for reassurances in the event you ascend to the presidency. The best thing it had to say was that your positions on the death penalty, abortion and the Syrian refugees are likely very close to my own, except I will never know since all you truly believe in is winning, and you’ll trade what’s best for your convictions in order to service your ego in a gilded New York minute. The ring also told me that 25 percent of the overall vote looks good in the primaries, but will never win you the presidency. Selections will include songs made famous by Elvis, Buddy Holly and during Neil Diamond’s early years. “It’s like my rock-and-roll show,” he added. According to Renner, people like his shows because he not only sings, but shares a little of the music’s and musicians’ history. “I’m a musical archive guy,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot, heard a lot of great bands, was friends with the Eagles and met one of the Beatles. I’ve experienced a lot of historical stuff.” He added, “I like to engage my crowd more than playing at them. Some say I need to write a book because I have a great memory and factual knowledge. That’s what I love.” Renner called his shows “a walk down memory lane” and said he likes to embody the personality of the music’s original performers when singing.

DNHS wins first section title in school history BY RICK HOFF After more than 75 minutes of rugged, scoreless soccer, Doriana Moul had seen enough. Moul, a senior forward for Del Norte High, scored the only goal of the game with just under five minutes remaining in regulation time, lifting the Nighthawks to their first championship with a 1-0 victory over Scripps Ranch in the San Diego Section Division I girls final Saturday night at Mesa College. “We knew it was going to be a tough game, and those last few minutes were especially tough,” said Moul, who is bound for Florida State University next season. “We just had to persevere.” The Del Norte defensive line and goalkeeper Sammy Burke also played a

big role for the Nighthawks, who came into the playoffs as a No. 1 seed. “This is a very special group,” said Burke. “All four of my defenders are my saviors.” The Nighthawks had appeared in one other section final, losing to Cathedral Catholic in the 2012 Division III championship match. Now head coach Gary Rossi, who has coached the team since the school opened in 2010, has a championship trophy as well. “Once we started getting our club players after the start of the season, we really began gelling,” said Rossi, whose team was winless after four games with an 0-2-2 record but won 13 of their last 14 matches to finished with a 16-6-2 SEE CHAMPS, B4

BY TERRY MONAHAN The Poway High wrestling team compiled 113 points and finished in third place behind Clovis Buchanan (274.5) and Clovis (232.5) Saturday at the state championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. It marked the 26th time the Titans have finished in the top five of the state’s elite teams. Only Clovis, with 28, has more top-five finishes. Poway had five wrestlers receive medals for being in the top eight in their weight bracket, led by Chris Bailey’s runner-up finish at 195. Bailey, a senior, was beaten by AJ Nevills of Clovis by a 6-1 score. Sophomore Chase Zollmann of Poway grabbed third place at 113 while junior Scott Kiyono was seventh at 132, junior Luis Enloe was also seventh at 145 and junior Hampton Boyd was eighth at 160. Rancho Bernardo junior Chasen Blair finished fourth at 182. Monahan is a freelance writer.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Hodge’s toughness spreads throughout Titans BY TERRY MONAHAN When asked about his outside midfielder Zach Hodge, Poway boys lacrosse coach Zach Burke recalled a game last year. Showing no fear near the opposing net, Hodge managed to overcome whatever the defense threw at him, especially this one play. “He draws a long stick (defender) all the time,’’ Burke said. “On this one play he got slashed on the back of the neck and while falling to the ground he got off a shot and scored. “His fearlessness is amazing and contagious. Everyone else on the team tries to keep up with him. “Zach’s not afraid so why should they be afraid to go in there.’’ Hodge, a senior, is in his third season as a starter for the Titans after transferring from Cathedral before his sophomore year. But the 5-foot-11 scorer has been playing lacrosse nonstop since third grade when his dad started a lacrosse program in Temecula. Football, soccer and basketball couldn’t drag him away from lacrosse. “I really fell in love with it right away,’’ Hodge said. “It’s a combination of a bunch of sports — football, soccer and hockey. “I love the freedom it gives you. You can hit people, shoot the ball in different ways. “It is different than any other sport out there. It’s the ultimate team sport.’’ Hodge has that same discussion about his

In my sport, guys hit you and knock you down in front of the goal. “The two of us talk about this all the time. I usually win the argument.’’ Coming off a Palomar League championship season with a 20-6-1 overall record, Poway, which opened the season

with a 14-6 win over Carlsbad, plays its home opener Friday against powerful Coronado. Hodge had a goal and two assists against Carlsbad. Once senior year is over, Hodge will head off to Cleveland State, where he plans to major in nursing. Hodge eventually wants to be a nurse anaesthetist after a suggestion from his dad, who sells anesthesia machines. “I shadowed a couple of nurses and really thought that was something I’d be interested

in doing,’’ Hodge said. “Hopefully, I can manage the classes and lacrosse. “It may call for some sacrifices, like sleep. But I really want this career.’’ Sacrificing is something Hodge does every day on the field. Scoring goals, at least in lacrosse, comes with a price to pay. You’re going to get hit by defenders. “You have to be able to take one for the team,’’ Hodge said. “You have to go into the crease, absorb hits and score. “When you’re about to get hit, everything goes into slow motion. Then everything is a blur for a couple of seconds. “Against La Costa Canyon last year I took a pass, turned around and got plowed in the head. Drew a penalty, but that’s what life is like the closer you get to the goal.’’ Born in Orange County, the Hodge family moved around quite a bit. After relocating to Murrieta, they went to Oregon, back to Murrieta and then 4S Ranch before settling in Poway. So going to Cleveland next fall for college is not such a drastic thing for Hodge. “Except I still have to learn how to do my laundry,’’ he said, laughing. “I’m sure dad will find a way to show up for a couple games. “Being the new kid in school is not so tough. Lacrosse helps. I have instant friends. “This would be a lot tougher without that.’’ Monahan is a freelance writer.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Broncos fall just short of Open Division title The Rancho Bernardo High girls soccer team fell just short of capturing its first San Diego Section championship in school history. The Broncos fought to a draw through regulation and a session of overtime before falling to Poway Unified School district rival Torrey Pines 4-2 in PKs in Friday night’s Open Division title game at Mesa College. Second-seeded Torrey Pines (16-1-5) avenged its only loss of the season to the Broncos, getting the clinching goal from Christina Bragado. The Falcons looked as if they were going to win it in regulation, nursing a 1-0 lead with just 20 minutes to go. But Rancho Bernardo’s Riley Dixon got the equalizer with 19 minutes left to setup the thrilling finish. It is not all bad news for Rancho Bernardo, who was playing in its first section final in school history. The Broncos were selected to play in the Division I CIF SoCal Regional. They were tagged the No. 7 seed and were slated to play at No. 2 Santa Margarita on Tuesday. If Rancho Bernardo won, it would advance to the semifinals where it would play at the winner of Tuesday’s other slated game between No. 3 Torrey Pines and No. 6 Chino Hills on Thursday at 4 p.m.

record. “Dani Baldwin directs our back line, which played with such tenacity and perseverance tonight.” Baldwin, who is bound for Cal State Fullerton, and Taylor Hansen made key defensive plays through the game for the two-time defending Avocado East League champions, who were also a top seed last year but lost to Rancho Buena Vista in the quarterfinals. The Nighthawks reached the finals this year following a 1-0 semifinal victory over district rival Poway. “A lot of our players have grown up together playing soccer,” added senior Karli Renken, who just missed on several earlier scoring opportunities. “This is like a dream come true.” The Nighthawks were tagged the No. 7 seed in the Division II SoCal Regional Championships. They were slated to play at No. 2 Palos Verdes Tuesday. If Del Norte won, it would advance to the semifinals where it would play at the winner of Tuesday’s other slated game between No. 3 El Camino Real and No. 6 Madera South on Thursday at 4 p.m. Hoff is a freelance writer.

ENTERTAINMENT

‘Private Eyes’ opens March 18 BY EMILY SORENSEN A unique comedy is opening at PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, on Friday, March 18. "Private Eyes," described as a "comedy of suspicions," will have a four-weekend run and end on Sunday, April 10. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are available online at www.powpac.org and are $22 general admission; $20 for students, seniors and active duty military. There is a $2 surcharge for opening night, which includes a post-performance reception with the cast. Written in 1996 by playwright Steven Dietz, "Private Eyes" tells a story of deception and broken trust, told through the often-unreliable eyes of Matthew, played by Daniel R. Sky. "Some people call ‘Private Eyes’ a dark comedy, but I don’t agree," said Director Jay Mower. "Dark comedy implies murder and mayhem, and there’s none of that (in the show). It’s a play about deception." Mower described the play

Sky and Fatima Pimienta. itself as deceptive, as it is told through the perceived reality of Matthew, as opposed to the actual reality of what is happening. "It’s about one person’s perception versus another’s. The event is the same, but all of us remember it differently," said Mower. "It’s also about how choices made in relationships affect not only yourself but your spouse, and how outside parties affect your relationship as well." Matthew believes that his wife, Lisa (Brandon Kaye

Thomas), is having an affair with Adrian (Joshua Meihaud), the British theater director she’s in a play with. Is she, or are they innocently rehearsing a play? Likewise, does Matthew actually have an affair with Cory (Fatima Pimienta), a woman he meets in a restaurant who may or may not be a detective, or is he imagining it? The show also features Haig Koshkarian as Frank. Mower said he has been pushing to direct "Private Eyes" for several years. "It’s a

very interesting show, but difficult to direct," he said. "I think it will be stimulating and thought-provoking for the audience." Mower described the show as non-linear, as it follows Matthew’s thoughts. "When we remember, we remember our reality, but that might not be what actually happened," he said. "Sometimes (in the show), we’re seeing what (Matthew) wishes really happened. It’s intriguing, I really enjoyed studying and reading (the play)." Mower also praised the cast, most of which he’s worked with before. "We have an outstanding cast," he said. "We got really lucky, they’re all so talented. I knew the quality of four of the actors, and I was surprised by the fifth. You have to have a cast this strong to pull this show off."

pet of the week Domestic Short Hair, is waiting for a patient new home. This sweet kitten was brought into our care in August after being attacked by a wild animal. He had a bit of a rough start, but his medical team quickly got him on the road to recovery. Due to his injuries, he unfortunately had to lose one of his back legs, and will need to be an indoor only cat in his new home. His foster mom says he is a very playful and talkative boy who loves to sleep in her bed every night. Due to his initial timidness, Possum would do best in a quiet home with adults only, preferably with another friendly cat companion for him to play with! Possum is available for adoption at the san Diego Humane society’s oceanside Campus, 572 Airport Road. To learn more about Possum call (760) 757-4357.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 877-484-9942 or visit this Internet Web site www.USA-Foreclosure.com or www.Auction.com using the file number assigned to this case 7777.01596. Bernardo Heights Country Club offers new amenities BY EMILY SORENSEN ClubCorp, the new owners of the Bernardo Heights Country Club as of December, are focusing on making capital improvements that will modernize and broaden the club’s appeal. Prior to being purchased by ClubCorp, Bernardo Heights Country Club, which has operated since the 1980s in Rancho Bernardo, was member-owned. The extensive capital improvements being made to the club and golf course include a large bunker project for the golf course, a renovation of the clubhouse, a brand new fleet of golf carts, carpaths and on-course amenities. “We’re updating, modernizing and reinventing the atmosphere (at Bernardo Heights Country Club),” said Dave Doerr, general manager of the club. “We’re not doing anything ClubCorp isn’t known for.” Doerr said that the club was doing well, but needed to be updated to appeal to a broader base and so it could be an all-inclusive country club. The clubhouse renovation is intended to give the club a more indoor-outdoor feel, said Doerr, as well as to open it up more. “Right now, it’s a little compartmentalized. We want to make it open, updated and vibrant,” he said. “This is not your father’s country club.” The renovations will modernize the club to keep up with the competition, said Doerr, while maintaining the heritage and the history of the club. The dining room will also get a renovation, including some new menu items, though the head chef and classic successful menu will stay. “The club has been known as one of the best dining facilities in Rancho Bernardo,” said Doerr. “We’re keeping that.” Another way ClubCorp is aiming to appeal to a broader base of customers is by upgrading

the wifi in the clubhouse to be faster. The changes to the club won’t be just physical. The club will be filling its social calendar in 2016 with events that will appeal to families, said Doerr and Scott McCue, membership director. “We have impressive programming that focuses on families and every demographic of our membership,” said McCue. “There’s something for every class of member that we have.” One of these fun programs is a ClubCorp favorite, where members and their families can camp out on the golf course on the Fourth of July to watch fireworks. “We want to continue with a lot of the traditions here at the club, and we want to bring in ClubCorp traditions that are popular across the country,” said Doerr. Members of Bernardo Heights Country Club also have another benefit from ClubCorp — access to over 300 clubs and partners owned and/or operated by ClubCorp worldwide. Members can gain one-day access to other ClubCorp holdings as a membership benefit. Those interested in joining the club can benefit from an offer currently available, where the first 25 new members will have zero initiation fees and a dues credit of up to $200 through March 2018. Of course, said Doerr, the club will continue to focus on golf. “At our core, we are a golf club,” said Doerr. Both Doerr and McCue are PGA professionals with a love and understanding of the game. “It’s appealing to members coming in to have the three top managers who are all PGA members,” said Doerr. “We’re completely focused on golf.” For more information on the Bernardo Heights Country Club and how to join, contact Scott McCue at 858-487-4022 ext. 102.

In addition to contributing to SBC, Inc.’s growth and financial success, Hernandez is actively involved in the community. This includes serving as chairman of St. Michael’s Catholic Church’s finance and pastoral committees. He has also conducted pro bono event planning for galas, such as for Employment & Community Options, is an avid supporter of the Girl Scouts San Diego and conducts annual donation drives for shelters and orphanages during the holidays. Since 1987, Strategic Business Communications, Inc., has provided its clients with management training and consulting, strategic sales and marketing planning, complete corporate event planning logistics plus coordination, and consumer/employee market research.

Mai Tais make more profitable ads

A

loha! I’m sitting in Waikoloa Village on the big island of Hawaii, listening to Pandora and waiting for the day to begin. I just heard an ad for Unicorn Jewelry. Only Unicorn isn’t in the 50th state, and odds are I’ll forget the ad by the time I return to Rancho Bernardo. It reminded me of retail magnate John Wannamaker, who once observed, “I know I’m wasting half my advertising dollars … only I don’t know which half.” And it made me wonder about lost marketing opportunities, since Unicorn paid for an advertising impression that, in this case, was completely wasted. Though I’m far from being technologically savvy, I’m guessing Pandora can solve this issue by making its ads specific to each listener’s location. It’s already using GPS to target the ads I hear to

my home base … so how hard can it be to follow me with ads as I move around the map? This technological tweak would ensure I’d hear ads for Harbor Gallery rather than Unicorn Jewelry during my island vacation. And though Unicorn wouldn’t make that particular impression on me, it would have made an impression on anyone visiting North County this past week. Regardless of whether you advertise on Pandora, your business may also be missing marketing opportunities. However, you can help yourself by tracking the results of every marketing effort you make to see what ads are profitable and what media is wasted. This isn’t as hard as you may think, and is always well worth the effort. You can begin with the following: ■ Have special landing pages for each web site promotion. ■ Sign each direct mail

letter with a different name. ■ Direct print ads to unique phone extensions. ■ Always ask where customers learned about you. You’ll quickly see patterns evolving, with certain types of ads or media generating better results than others. This will allow you to stop guessing which advertising works best for you, and increase your future successes. Of course, no marketing vehicle is perfect and you’ll never get 100 percent response any place. You may even find (as Unicorn no doubt does) great results despite the occasional missed impression. But some extra effort today is guaranteed to increase the efficiency and profitability of your business for many tomorrows to come. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Dreams do come true at Cypress Court of Escondido

T

here are those who go their entire lives without ever seeing their dreams come true. According to the Wellness Team at Cypress Court, this won’t be the case for members of this Escondido Kisco Senior Living Community. Thanks to a program called Dreams Do Come True, which was once the brainchild of 11-year Cypress Court employee and Assistant Activities Director Judy Lucous, deserving residents are seeing their wishes become a reality. Much like a plan made famous by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in the popular movie “The Bucket List,” those who benefit from this program have an opportunity to see their top bucket list wish come to fruition as a way to celebrate their best life yet. “Although this program began in memory of a resident who was on Hospice and passed away not long after her dream came true, my goal is to now celebrate the start of a new and exciting life for our residents,” Lucous said. Resident Lea Miyashiro, who has always wanted to go up in a hot air balloon, was the next to see her fantasy come to life last week thanks to support from both Cypress Court as well as the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park. “As this year began, my goal has been to make as many residents dreams come to true as possible,” Lucous said. “Fortunately, when I brought this idea up to a group of our community members

Along with exciting adventures like the one

that Miyashiro experienced, those who reside at Cypress Court also enjoy other living pleasures that are unlike many senior living communities. These specialized amenities include large, comfortable apartments with full kitchens and a patio or balcony set in a peaceful park-like setting, high end dining experiences, ongoing exercise and wellness programs and much more. (StatePoint) Although homeownership doesn’t make good financial sense for everyone, some experts say you may be qualified to purchase real estate without realizing it. “Factor in today’s very low interest rates and current home prices, and affordable mortgages are within reach for many qualified borrowers who may have been hesitant to enter the market,” said Christina Boyle, senior vice president and head of single-family sales and relationship management at Freddie Mac. After receiving your application, along with the required paycheck stubs, W-2s, bank statements and tax returns, lenders will evaluate the four Cs: ■ Capacity: Your income, employment history, savings and monthly debt payments — such as credit card charges and other financial obligations — help lenders determine whether you have the means to take on a mortgage comfortably. ■ Capital: The money and savings you have on hand, plus investments, properties and other salable assets. ■ Collateral: The value of the home that you plan to buy. ■ Credit: Your bill- and debt-paying record. More loan application tips can be found at myhome.freddiemac.com. “You have choices, so interview lenders to compare costs,” said Boyle, who also recommends getting the process started early. “Getting pre-approved for a loan can help you shop with confidence.”
