The next election season won’t include the posting of candidate signs along the city’s rightof-ways, most members of the City Council agreed Tuesday night. Following discussion during a non-voting workshop session, City Manager Dan Singer and his staff were instructed to prepare more stringent sign rules for future adoption by the council. The city’s landscape was covered with hundreds of political signs prior to the November election, generating calls from both members of the public and a couple of candidates, to set some limits. Councilman Jim Cunningham called the campaign signs “self-aggrandizing graffiti and said that he didn’t not know of anyone who won or

Campaign signs were prevalent in Poway during the November 2014 election. File photo lost an election based on the number of signs used.

Mayor Steve Vaus said that while his experience has shown that “signs do make a difference,” the city has become a “dumping ground” for candidate signs because it is one of only three in the county that allows them to be posted near roads. Both the City and County of San Diego forbid signs along right-of-ways, he noted. The only Poway restriction is that the signs not be placed in front of publicly owned properties. Councilman Dave Grosch said he supported the elimination of all political signs and suggested that candidates put the money they spend on signs into pairs of shoes to be used while canvassing voters door to door. A different perspective was offered by Councilman John Mullin. While the large number of signs displayed last fall was “obnoxious,” he said, they were excessive largely due to highly SEE SIGNS, Page A5

A youth hockey coach’s search for practice ice time for his players culminated Tuesday night with the City Council council unanimously approving plans for a indoor arena in the business park. Nish Mehta, head of Hattrick Ice, Inc. will conver t par t of a 114,00-square-foot warehouse at 12455 Kerran St. into a fully-equipped ice skating center that will serve the public, the amateur ice skating community and the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League as the training facility for the new San Diego Gulls, the team’s top minor league hockey affiliate. The $4 million arena should be completed by late summer, Mehta said. Submitted plans include an NHL-sized ice rink, upstairs offices and locker room for the Gulls, snack bar, box office, pro shop, skate rental area and party room. Parking for 198 vehicles, plus another 26 spaces behind a fence for the team, is proposed. The arena will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Mehta told the council he coaches two youth teams and was having a hard time finding practice time at established rinks. During his search he learned that the Ducks were planning on moving their top minor league team from Virginia to San Diego and were looking for a place to base and train the team. He said he was pleased to build in Poway since many of his players, along with several coaches of amateur skaters, live in town. The relocation of the minor league team will mean that between 50-60 families will be looking for homes on the Poway area, he said. The plans were praised by several members of the council. “This community yearns for things for teens to do on weekends,” Councilman Jim Cunningham said. In other matters, the council • Approved a proposal to have the city refund (refinance) four outstanding tax allocation bonds amounting to about $198.3 million that were issued by the now-defunct redevelopment agency. Due to current low interest rates, an estimated $28.2 million in interest payments can be saved by refunding, according to Scott Edwards, SEE COUNCIL, Page A5

Family, friends celebrate Bob Emery's life BY EMILY SORENSEN Former Poway City Councilman Bob Emery was remembered for his sense of humor, his love for his family and his dedication to the city at his memorial service on Saturday at Community Church of Poway. Emery, 74, died on March 3 after a long battle with cancer. He was elected to the first City Council in 1980 and served 28 years. The service included a flag presentation to Suzanne Emery by the Sheriff’s Honor Guard and Emery’s daughter, Krysty Emery, and his grandson, Nyack Emery, giving a Buddhist reading, “On White Ashes (Hakkotsu no Gobunshø).” Emery’s other daughter, Kathleen Emer y, spoke about her father’s sense of adventure, his passion for Poway, his unending love for her mother and his sense of humor. “He was one of the most patient people I knew. I never had a fight with my dad, or was grounded — by Dad,” she said during her memorial, which was met with laughter. “My parents were always in love, so much that it grossed me out as

a teenager,” Kathleen said, adding that after Emer y retired, he and Suzanne made sure to spend every sunset together, even if it was by phone. Sherry Freeborn, one of Emery’s coworkers from his time as a teacher at Hidden Valley Middle School in the Escondido Union School District, said she and Emery had been friends for 35 years. When she first came to work at the school, she said, she had been warned not to let Emery “hurt her feelings.” Instead, he invited her to sit with him during lunch. “(Emery said) come sit with us fun people,” Freeborn said. “... (Emery was) my dear friend, who never did hurt my feelings.” John Stubbs, principal during Emery’s time at Hidden Valley, recalled Emery as a dedicated, passionate teacher and a great staff member. “Bob had great, great ideas. What a staff member,” said Stubbs. When he asked Emery to teach science one year, not a subject he usually taught, Stubbs said Emery not only said yes, but took college science courses to refresh himself for the subject. “Bob was a blessing to that

school,” Stubbs said. “... Godspeed Bob, and thanks for the good memories.” Several other speakers recounted Emery’s work on the City Council and his dedication to developing Poway while retaining its city in the country feel. Bruce Tarzy, another original Poway City Council member, said Emery had a sometimes gruff exterior, but he had principles and ethics, and wasn’t afraid to make where he stood on an issue known. “Bob, through years of principled, dedicated service, made Poway a reality,” said Tarzy. “... he knew where to compromise and where to get the most for the City of Poway. ... It’s not hard to see how a principled school teacher became a giant of a man in Poway.” Reverend Glen Larson, who led the service, encouraged everyone to share their memories of Emery. “Each time you share memories, Bob will come alive in the city he loved and served,” said Larson. “... Recognize that we are better people, live in a better community and live better lives because of Bob Emery.”

PUSD pushing for positive social media use BY EMILY SORENSEN The use of a free social media application to spread negativity and hate has spurred the Poway Unified School District into starting a campaign for positive social media use. The application, “Burnbook,” allows users to post comments and photos anonymously. It is based off of the “burn book” in the movie “Mean Girls,” in which rumors and mean comments are written about other girls at the fictional high school. After one user posted an anony-

mous threat to the application on March 4 threatening to bring a gun to Del Norte High School, the district launched a campaign to focus on posting positive messages to social media. The Burnbook application allows users to post anonymously but tracks their IP addresses. The district and the San Diego Police Department are working together to try and identify the person who made the threat against Del Norte High School. PUSD was aware of Burnbook prior to the threat, said Jessica Wakefield, the district’s spokesperson.

“Even before the threat, several high schools had notified us that they were handling complaints about mean things being posted on Burnbook,” said Wakefield. “(The district) became concerned and reached out to Burnbook’s creator, to express our discontent with the application earlier in the week (before the gun threat was made).” Burnbook is blocked on school and district Wi-Fi, but students can still access it on their phones and other mobile devices using mobile data to circumvent the school’s block.

Prior to the gun threat, Superintendent John Collins sent out a letter PUSD middle and high school families, talking about social media and the consequences posting online can have, even if anonymous. “Dr. Collins sent out a notice to families in the district, saying that anonymous posts aren’t anonymous, and that we should be nice to each other online,” said Wakefield. Following the threat, Wakefield said that Collins wanted to make sure that he could speak to the students SEE MEDIA, Page A5

County official criticizes actions of PUSD's planning director BY STEVE DREYER In a letter recounting a Feb. 27 meeting over a financial matter with Poway Unified School District representatives, the county’s chief deputy treasurer describes the PUSD’s director of planning as “combative and confrontational.” In her March 10 letter to PUSD board President Kimberly Beatty, Antoinette Chandler wrote that Sandra Burgoyne “questioned the purpose of the meeting and the professional qualifications of County staff before discussing the proposed financing. Throughout the meeting, Ms. Burgoyne continued to behave in a unprofessional matter toward our County staff.” Chandler added that “In the future, we would greatly appreciate it if your staff would act in a civil and professionally courteous matter.” The letter was written the same day as last week’s Board of Education meeting. Several board members referred to portions of the letter relating to Chandler’s recommendations regarding the proposed refunding (refinancing) of bonds used to construct schools and public improvements in Del Sur. Board members eventually approved the refunding on a 4-1 vote, with Charles Sellers in opposition. Burgoyne attended the board meeting and spoke directly about her role in the Feb. 27 meeting. She told board members that she challenged county representatives on their knowledge of special tax revenue refunding bonds and concluded that their only experience was in general obligation bonds. At no time during last week’s board meeting were Chandler’s written criticisms of Burgoyne’s alleged behavior

EVENT HONORS FORMER MAYOR

Chamber Golf Classic is Friday BY EMILY SORENSEN After the success of its first year, the Poway Chamber of Commerce is bringing back its golf classic on Friday. The second annual Mickey Cafagna Golf Classic will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start and will be held at Maderas Golf Club, 17750 Old Coach Road in Poway. Golfers will also enjoy lunch during the 18-hole scramble. An awards reception, with a buffet and silent auction will follow the golf classic, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This year, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Abraxas High School in the Poway Unified School District. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and will continue until the start of the golf classic. The golf classic is being held in honor of former Poway mayor Mickey Cafagna, who died in 2009. The inaugural event was held last March after being delayed by rain in February 2014. The first event drew 91 golfers. Cafagna was the third elected mayor of Poway, serving from 1998 until his death in 2009. During his time as mayor, he championed the construction of Poway’s city hall and of the South Poway Business Park on Scripps Poway Parkway and provided leadership dur-

ing the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Creek Fire. “Honoring Mickey in this way means so much to our family,” said Sharon Cafagna in a press release. “Mickey was so proud of Poway and the folks who make our community special. Knowing people are gathering in his memory at Maderas, a course he loved, would certainly put a smile on his face.” The presenting sponsor for the event is Cox Business, with EDCO sponsoring the lunch, Kelchlin Construction sponsoring the carts and Belmont Village Senior Living sponsoring the beverage cart. The City of Poway is sponsoring the dinner. Hole sponsors for the golf classic are Atlas Transfer & Storage and Allied Van Lines; Cafe Merlot and Lifestyles INFOCUS; D&S Construction; Filippi’s Pizza Grotto; Jersey Mike’s; Lexus of Escondido; McLean, Rotherham and Company; Oakley Relocation and North American Van Lines; Perr y Ford of Poway; Poway Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram; PuroClean Emergency Services; The Compass Pointe Group at Morgan Stanley; The Hamburger Factory; Toyota of Poway; Wealth Management and Wrench-On Wheels Automotive Care. ing transmitted. District spokeswoman Jessica Wakefield wrote at the time that “Page one has confidential employee info that needs to be redacted.” Several hours later she released the first page, with Bugoyne’s name blacked out five times. Wakefield wrote that the redacting was done by Daniel Shinoff, a district-retained attorney. A full copy of the letter was obtained the following day by the News Chieftain without any objection from the treasurer’s office. After reviewing the original and redacted versions of Chandler’s letter, the staff attorney for the California Newspaper Publisher’s Association concluded Tuesday that the district inappropriately removed Burgoyne’s name from the version provided the newspaper. “Firstly, the district doesn’t appear to have asserted an exemption to the state’s Public Records Act,” staff attorney Nikki Moore said Tuesday. “Without that we have no idea what their intention was.” She then added, “I don’t understand how a name in the context on this letter could be redacted.” Page 2 of Chandler’s letter contained two recommendations regarding the refunding of the bonds: • The district’s financial advisor should negotiate a lower fee arrangement for the underwriter’s discount for the bond insurance. (Board members were told March 10 that this in fact had been done since the Feb. 27 meeting with the county.) • The school board should consider conducting an “RPF process” (requests for proposals) for underwriting services “to ascertain the competitive landscape of banking services for its next financing.”

Detectives investigating fatal shooting at Frame Road home BY STEVE DREYER The lead investigator into Sunday’s fatal shooting on Frame Road said Wednesday he’s still not sure exactly what happened. Sheriff’s Lt. John Maryon said the investigation is taking longer than usual due to a combination of conflicting statements from witnesses and the fact that alcohol was being consumed at the time. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning and more interviews were planned, he said. Deputies responded to a 1:35 a.m. Sunday call to a home on the 13400 block of Frame Road find Chris Alan Jewell, 43, dead in the back yard and Seth Warner Ladabouche, 41, shot and wounded inside. Both were reportedly shot in the upper body. Ladabouche was treated at a local hospital then released to detectives for questioning. Maryon said the home was the residence of Ladabouche and that he and Maryon were friends. Two females were also present at the time of the incident he said. A handgun was recovered at the scene but it’s still not clear who fired how many shots, Maryon said.

Music store owners hit high and low notes on same day BY EMILY SORENSEN February 20 was a memorable day for the Bertrand family, as they lost their original store in a fire and won a prestigious award. “It was definitely a crazy day,” said Joel Bertrand, who, with his brothers John Jr. and Jeff, runs the company founded in 1983 by dad John Bertrand Sr. One of their four stores is in Poway. The store in San Bernadino that started it all was destroyed at around 1 p.m. that day when a 94-year-old woman drove her vehicle through the front of the store, starting a fire. “We’re not sure what happened,” said Bertrand. “We can only speculate.” Bertrand said his employees helped the woman from the vehicle and everyone escaped without injuries. The store, however, was almost completely destroyed, including all of its inventory. “It was a total loss, it burned all our inventory. The whole store went up in flames.” The pain of that loss, however, was soothed by finding out on that same day that Bertrand’s Music had been awarded the state music industry award by the California Music Educators Association (CMEA). This award honors an organization for outstanding leadership in music education. “(Finding out about the award) felt great,” said Bertrand. “Oftentimes, we don’t get recognized. We do so much in the community, including giving free music lessons and scholarships. It makes us feel good to be recognized.” Bertrand said they were nominated by one of the school band leaders from the Poway Unified School District, but he didn’t know which one.

Left CMEA Vice President Steve Hendee, left with Jeff and and Joel Bertrand at the awards event. The same day they were informed of the award their music store in San Bernardino burned up after a car crashed into the structure. Photos provided “The main reason we won was because of our work with music education,” said Bertrand. “Our main goal as a company is music education and music advocacy.” John Bertrand Sr. was a school music director for 15 years before deciding to open his own music store in San Bernadino. Bertrand’s Music has paid honor to his years of music education by offering free music lessons to beginning band and orchestra students in the Poway Unified School District with its Summer Head Start program, providing scholarships and much more. Bertrand’s Music now has four locations: in San Bernadino,

Poway, in San Diego on Black Mountain Road, and in Mission Viejo. “We’ve very focused on music education,” said Bertrand. “The performing arts are very important in a young person’s life to develop creativity, whether it’s art or music. Math can’t give you that creativity.” Bertrand said they will be focusing on rebuilding their San Bernardino store, which is currently working out of a temporary location behind the damaged building. “We’re definitely going to rebuild,” said Bertrand. “Most likely in the same location. We’re going to clean up and rebuild.”

Scouts collecting new socks, underwear for homeless children BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Rancho Bernardo Junior Girl Scouts in Troop 8227 are collecting new socks and underwear for homeless children. The community service project, part of their Bronze Award requirements, will benefit children attending the Monarch School in downtown San Diego. It provides year-round education to around 300 kindergarten through 12th graders impacted by homelessness. In addition to collecting the new socks and underwear, the troop is also conducting an awareness campaign to highlight the students’ and school’s needs. They have created a PowerPoint presentation and video to explain their project and why it is needed. Both are viewable at www.GirlScoutsRB. org. Items collected will be placed in Monarch School’s Butterfly Boutique, which provides free clothes, shoes and toiletries to the students. “It’s a store for kids to shop at,” said Junior Girl Scout Jadeyn King. “Fifth graders and younger go to shop during school hours. Sixth grade and over go after school. They get to shop and pick out gently-used clothes, shoes and accessories. They go there like we go to the mall.” Junior Girl Scout Savannah Cockrell said the troop chose this project because it was their favorite among options presented by their leader, Jenny Coleman. Seniors How Medicare covers in-home care How does Medicare cover home health care? Because of my illness, my doctor suggested I get home health care, but I want to find out how it’s covered before I proceed. Need Some Help Dear Need, Medicare covers a wide variety of intermittent in-home health care services (usually up to 28 hours per week) to beneficiaries, if you meet their specific requirements. Here’s how it works. In order for you to secure coverage for home health care, Medicare first requires that you be homebound. This means that it must be extremely difficult for you to leave your home, and you need help from a device (like a wheelchair or walker) or a person in doing so. You will then need your doctor to approve a “plan of care confirming that you need skilled-nursing care or skilled-therapy services from a physical or speech therapist on a part-time basis. Your doctor can also request the services of an occupational therapist and a home health aide to assist with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and using the bathroom. Your doctor must renew the “plan of care once every

Jim Miller THE SAVVY SENIOR 60 days. You will also need to use a home health agency that is certified by Medicare. If you meet all of the requirements, Medicare should pay for your inhome care. But, be aware that Medicare will not pay for home health aide services (such as bathing, dressing or using the bathroom) alone, if you do not need skillednursing or skilled-therapy services too. Homemaker services, such as shopping, meal preparation and cleaning are not covered either. You also need to know that Medicare has recently changed their home health care policy regarding degenerative diseases. They will now pay for in-home physical therapy, nursing care and other services to beneficiaries with chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease in order to maintain their condition and prevent deterioration. In the past, Medicare would only cover home health services if the patient were expected to make a full recov-

ery. If you have original Medicare, you can locate a Medicare-certified home health agency by calling 800-633-4227 or by visiting medicare.gov/ homehealthcompare. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you should contact your plan directly and ask which home health agencies work with the plan and are within the plan’s network of providers. For more detailed information on how Medicare covers in-home health, see the “Medicare and Home Health Care online booklet at medicare.gov/pubs/ pdf/10969.pdf. If you don’t qualify for Medicare coverage, there are other coverage options depending on your situation, including: Insurance: If you happen to have long-term care insurance, check to see if it covers in-home care. can be utilized to pay for care. Medicaid: If your income is low enough, all states offer Medicaid programs that will pay for some forms of in-home care. To investigate this, contact your local Medicaid office. Veterans Assistance: If you’re a veteran, some communities have a Veteran-Directed Home and Community Based Service program, which give veterans a flexible budget to pay for in-home care. Also available to wartime veterans and their spouses is a benefit called “Aid and Attendance that helps pay for in-home care, as well as assisted living and nursing home care. To be eligible, you must need assistance with daily living activities like bathing, dressing or going to the bathroom. And, your annual income must be under $21,466 – minus medical and longterm care expenses. If you’re a surviving spouse of a veteran, your income must be below $13,794 to be eligible. Your assets must also be less than $80,000 excluding your home and car. To learn more, see va.gov/geriatrics or call 800-827-1000. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. contested races for school board and Congress. Political signs, Mullin said, “are the price we pay for democracy” and restraining their use in Poway would give incumbents an unfair advantage. After the meeting Mullin said he would vote against a motion to prohibit election signs along the city’s streets. In addition to the right-of-way ban, the council may also look at reducing maximum sizes for signs. In 2012, as part of an overhaul of the sign code, the council voted to slightly decrease the maximum allowable size of campaign signs to 24 square feet. Four cities allow larger signs in non-residential areas. Others are much more restrictive. For example, non-residential signs in Carlsbad cannot be larger than 10 square feet and Chula Vista restricts their size to 12 square feet. The City of San Diego has no size restrictions. While Poway can prohibit signs along right-of-ways, putting a maximum cap on the total number of signs permitted would be “problematic,” said Development Services Director Bob Manis, since “election signs are exempt from the requirement of a sign permit and this is how staff would keep track of and enforce a limit on number.” No jurisdiction in the county limits the number of signs, he said.

about being nice to one another and to the community about a community effort to encourage positive speech. “People should step in when people are saying or posting negative things and say positive things instead.” Collins posted a video on the district’s Facebook, talking about the threat and encouraging students to stop posting negative and hateful things online. “We need to stop the hate. Stop the cyber-bullying. Stop the tearing down of others and start building one another up,” Collins said in the video,

which can be viewed at youtu.be/nhc8SqVehuk or from the district’s Facebook page or website, powayusd.com. Wakefield said that the district is already seeing a lot of effort from students in spreading positive social media use. Westview students started a twitter account where students can anonymously submit complimentary messages about other students to be posted, and its annual social media week focused on social media etiquette and reducing hate online. “The high schools are im-

plementing (the campaign) in different ways, and so are families,” said Wakefield. One family had contacted her, she said, and said that they had never really sat down with their child to monitor what they were doing online, and were now doing so. Wakefield said that the district is also looking into increasing the number of free social media informational classes it offers. Currently, the district does one, but Wakefield said they’d like to expand that number. The district plans to continue its campaign with the

help of students, including those who are involved with the superintendent’s advisory council, who other students might be more inclined to listen to. “Kids listen to other kids before they listen to adults,” said Wakefield. “We’d like to keep a grassroots feel (to the positive social media campaign).” They would like students to continue to put out positive, encouraging messages while repor ting negative ones, Wakefield said. “Focus on the positive and don’t let negative messages get so much attention,” she said.

Business Simple Simon met a pi man

S

aturday was Pi Day, celebrating March 14 (Pi is 3.14). We had a small celebration with some geeky friends. In the spirit of combining math and marketing, Dan and Lynn Nichols of Poway initiated a blind taste test. Plate one held Moon Pies. Plate two: Choco Pies. My bride and I had heard of Moon Pies (developed 1917). As ASK MR. MARKETING devoted Mallomar fans, we’d never tried this Southern treat. We were equally unfamiliar with Choco Pies (invented 1974), making us perfect test subjects. “The Moon Pie costs nine times as much as Choco Pies,” our friends explained. They sought to determine if the extra cost was worth it. Seven of eight around the table found Choco Pies superior in taste and texture. One friend grew up on Moon Pies and preferred them. This result intrigued me, as I’d always assumed Moon Pie’s sales longevity was a direct result of superior product. Based on our focus group, my assumption was apparently incorrect. I’d argue if Choco Pies is willing to roll the dice, they have an opportunity here to take over the market. By instituting a widespread taste test, Choco Pies could steal attention and sales from their larger competitor. They just have to be willing to risk losing. Admittedly, Moon Pie sales may be a matter of taste preference. They may also just be a matter of shopping habit. Because I’ve seen that most customers, having found a product or service that works for them, don’t like to change their minds. The theory: It ain’t broke, so don’t fix it. And recognizing that youthful buying habits can easily last a lifetime, many companies focus their marketing efforts on youngsters. Which suggests if Choco Pies does a taste test with teenagers, they can potentially blow Moon Pies out of the sky. Granted, blind taste tests aren’t new. Pepsi started doing them against Coke in 1975. French fries, wine, you name it, marketplace underdogs have for years used blind testing to prove their point or build their reputation. Which means for you, using a blind test to persuade potential customers that your product is better than the other guys could really pay off. Just first try it quietly to make sure you’re theory is correct. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing.

POWAY RETAIL ROUNDUP

Perry Ford construction nears completion BY EMILY SORENSEN The arrival of spring is bringing several new businesses to Poway, as well as a step forward for an auto dealer’s remodel. Perry Ford of Poway, at 12740 Poway Road is nearing the completion of its new building and employees should be moving into the new building in the first week in April, said Mario Lopez, general manager of Perry Ford of Poway. Construction on the new building began late last spring. Once the new building is finished, demolition on the old building next door will begin. Lopez said that stage 2 of the project, the old building, should be finished by June. The new building is 17,500 square feet and has been built next to the existing 14,500-square-foot repair center. A central feature is the 30-by-100-footwide curved glass window wall, as well as the 35-foot clock tower. The remodel plans were approved by the City Coun-

cil in August 2013. “The new building is taking shape and looks phenomenal. Its tilt-up construction along with polished aluminum make it a true icon along with the clock tower. The front of the building being mostly glass really makes a statement and gives the building a warm contemporary look,” said Lopez during the construction. Poway will also be getting a new place to eat with Bruski Burgers and Brew, which will be opening in late March or early April at 12622 Poway Road. This will be the second location for Bruski, in addition to the original location in Scripps Ranch. Bruski is a family-owned casual dining restaurant that offers chef-prepared comfort food like burgers, sandwiches, salads and paninis. It also offers 24 craft beers on tap from several local breweries, including Stone and Ballast Point, as well as wine, cocktails, sake and coffee drinks. Southwest Guns and Gear, at 12759 Poway Road across from Perry Ford of

Poway, is nearing its opening, according to the store’s Facebook page, and as of March 31, its hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. For more information, visit www. facebook.com/swgunsandgear or call 858-883-2711. Rita’s of Poway, at 13160 Poway Road in the Library Plaza shopping center, opened in its new location on March 2. The dessert shop is open 1 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. They offer a wide variety of delicious frozen treats, including Italian ice, cream ice, gelati, sugar-free Italian ice, milkshakes and frozen custard in a variety of flavors. For more information and a menu, visit www.ritasofpoway.com or call 858668-7281. According to Jay Virata, the economic development manager for the City of Poway, a Massage Envy is also coming to Poway, at 12642 Poway Road, near the Bruski Burgers and Brew restaurant.

It’s time to have some down-and-dirty fun when the So Cal Mud Run returns to Rancho Bernardo next month to benefit 13 local organizations. The mud-filled obstacle course will open at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 12. Every 10 minutes or so groups of 20 or 30 participants of all ages will start slipping and sliding along a trail adjacent to Rancho Bernardo Community Park. The course will have them crawling under or climbing over obstacles and splashing in Lake Hodges as they encounter the 22 stations. “I’m trying to alter the route to make it fun and different,” said organizer Dennis Yeatman, who has put together all of the Mud Runs held in Rancho Bernardo over the past couple years. “This is not a race,” Yeatman said. “I make it clear this is strictly for fun. For organizations to make money (through it) is a very good thing.” He said there are no obstacles that he considers too challenging or too difficult for most people to handle. In addition, he said participants are free to walk around any stations they do not want to attempt. “If they don’t want to go up the hill to touch the American flag or don’t want to crawl in the mud (they don’t have to),” he said. “But most do anything, from those 5 years to 70 years.” Many participants form teams or come in costume. “There have been Darth Vaders and every year the RB lacrosse moms wear royal blue tutus,” Yeatman said. “Some wear team colors, there are guys in leotards and some wear bug ears.” Registration is $35 for adults (it goes up to $40 after March 31), $20 for kids and students under 18, $25 for active duty military, $20 for adults in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization and $5 for their corresponding Little Brothers/Little Sisters. To register in advance go to www.socalmudrun5k. com. Participants can also register at the event. Everyone needs to arrive at least 30 minutes before their desired start time between 9 and 11 a.m. When they register, participants can choose which of 13 organizations they want their entry fee to support. They do not have to be a part of that organization and Yeatman said if people request, he is willing to add beneficiary groups. As of Monday, the beneficiaries are: Big Brothers/Big Sisters Operation Bigs (it is for youths who have a deployed or deceased military parent), Del Norte High School ASB, Del SEE MUD, Page B15

When many people think of Abraxas High School, the first association is that it is a school for “bad kids,” an outdated and false image that the staff and students of Abraxas have been fighting for years. Now, the continuation high school is teaming up with the Poway Chamber of Commerce to help change the public’s perception of the school. “Abraxas has a long-standing reputation as a bad school,” said Assistant Principal July Hill-Wilkinson. “Some parents even refuse to send their kids here, even if it is the best environment for their child.” Hill-Wilkinson said that when kids actually start attending the schools, parents tend to realize that everything they thought about Abraxas was wrong. “We need to figure out a different strategy (to change our reputation),” said Hill-Wilkinson. “We have amazing students.” Now, Abraxas will be working with the chamber to try and rehabilitate its public image and let people know all the good Abraxas does for its students, and how its students are good kids. “We have great programs, passionate teachers and we offer things that other high schools can’t because they’re too big,” said Hill-Wilkinson. “We love it here, and we feel like it is under a cloud of assumptions.” Though some of the pall of Abraxas’s reputation has been lifting thanks to community outreach, like Principal David MacLeod and staff attending meetings at other schools, the staff at Abraxas was still interested in finding a partner in the community to help them. “We put feelers out all over the place to see who could help us,” said Hill-Wilkinson. That helper turned out to be the Poway

Chamber of Commerce. Dolores Canizales, the president and CEO of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, said she was introduced to the idea of partnering with Abraxas while searching for a new recipient for proceeds from the chamber’s golf classic. Former PUSD board member Todd Gutschow suggested Abraxas High School. “I serve on Poway’s Partners in Education with Cora Bagley (the program’s coordinator), so I’m familiar with education,” said Canizales. “It made sense (to donate funds to Abraxas) as a lot of schools have foundations and PTAs, but Abraxas doesn’t.” Some of the proceeds from the golf classic, which will be held Friday at Maderas Golf Club, will go to Abraxas’s Transitions program, which teaches critical skills to special needs students that have aged out of high school. “Abraxas is considered a school for bad kids, and it’s not anymore,” said Canizales. “We as a chamber are going to promote the positive programs Abraxas has for students in the community. We’re willing to work with them on marketing and visibility ... they want to change the perception the community has of them, and we want to help them change that perception.” Canizales said partnering with Abraxas will also let the chamber help shape the local economy. “It’s time for us to take the next step and participate in creating a strong local economy,” she said. “One way to do that is to make sure we have a strong partnership with the Poway Unified School District and the students coming into the workforce.” Hill-Wilkinson said the partnership is still in its infancy, but she and Canizales have been brainstorming how to use Abraxas’s best students in chamber events to show a different face of Abraxas to the community.

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK “Walk for Animals: Paws in the Park -North County” is headed to Kit Carson Park in Escondido on March 29. The 16th annual event — previously known as “Paws in the Park” — will benefit the San Diego Humane Society, which the former Escondido Humane Society merged with last year. “Paws in the Park” was one of the Escondido facility’s largest fundraisers of the year. Last year it had a record-setting attendance of more than 1,000 people and raised $106,000, according to officials. SDHS Spokeswoman Kelli Schry said the revamped 1.5- and 2.5-mile fundraiser walk and festivities are well on track to exceed previous numbers since it is being promoted to a much larger and geographically-wider audience. As of Monday, more than 700 walkers had already registered and organizers are anticipating more than 1,000 dogs will be in attendance. The family-friendly event is open to friendly, on-leash dogs. Organizers do not recommend other types of pets attend. While changed a bit from previous walks, Schry said many aspects are continuing. One new event is a complimentary pancake

Entertainment Orchestra celebrating 10th year with gala concert great classical composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Grieg, Mozart, Gershwin and many more. Though it started small, it is now a full-sized symphony orchestra. The orchestra performs three concerts a year at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, with at least one concert a year featuring a guest soloist. All their concerts have been free. Though the gala concert was originally intended to feature a guest soloist, Reiner and John LoPiccolo, the orchestra’s new music director, decided to have the concert focus entirely on the orchestra itself. “We wanted to showcase the orchestra, the diversity and skill of the musicians we have,” said Reiner. The concert will feature festive music in celebration, beginning with the “Festive Overture,” by Dimitri Shostakovitch. “There is hardly a more exciting and joyous piece of music ever written, with the full orchestra on SEE ORCHESTRA, Page B14

BY EMILY SORENSEN In honor of 10 years of bringing free, accessible symphony music to the community, the Poway Symphony Orchestra is performing a gala concert on Sunday. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and will be at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road. Admission is free, donations are appreciated. There will be a free reception following the concert at the PCPA. Concert attendees are welcome to attend. “(Our 10 year anniversary) is exciting, it’s a big deal,” said Concertmaster Ulli Reiner, who founded the orchestra in late 2004. It performed its first concert on April 1, 2005. “(The 10th anniversary) means it was always the right thing to do for the community. We’re looking forward to the next 10 years.” The orchestra is made up entirely of volunteers and is run through the Poway Adult

What will Poway's leaders do with Bob Emery's legacy? By Lynette Perkes

POMERADO NEWSPAPER GROUP

B

ob Emery spent 38 years shaping Poway into the beautiful little city it is today, and then guarding and protecting it. During that time, his integrity, his blunt honesty, and his commitment to a low-density, rural residential Poway became legend. Bob said that what defines Poway is not so much what you see here as what you don’t see. Here are some things you don’t see, proposals that would have passed easily in another city (see Lakeside). • A mass of three-story apartment buildings lining both sides of Espola Road. • A seven-acre shopping center at Lake Poway Road and Espola Road. • A major shopping center, with department store anchors, at the corner of Old Coach Road and Espola Road. • Espola Road widened to six lanes, the short route from East County to Highway 395. • The hillsides along Old Coach Road terraced and covered in condos. • Stone Canyon Road cut through to the high school, carrying 40,000 vehicle trips per day through Green Valley. • “Boulder Mountain” blasted, terraced and lined with condos. • A shopping center at Stone Canyon and Pomerado roads. • Twin Peaks flattened and topped with multi-story Navy housing. • A gas station/shopping center at Poway and Espola roads, and the massive development that would have followed if water and sewer had been extended to Highway 67. • A large trailer park where Avocado Glen now nestles in the hills. • A massive sand and gravel operation and an asphalt plant, dominating Beeler Canyon. • Five thousand more multi-story apartments along Poway Road. Recognizing that a pro-growth future council could undo everything the first council had accomplished, Bob proposed, and Poway passed, his Proposition FF, which changed the development game completely. Prop. FF requires a vote of the people before the council can increase the density or intensity of use in any rural residential zone. Prop FF passed overwhelmingly in Poway and then was copied by other cities around California, including Escondido. That’s why Escondido’s outlying fields and hills are not paved over and covered with condos. In 1980, when we became a city, Poway Road was known as the tackiest little town in the county. It was lined with SEE POWAY, Page B29

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Columnist uses poor description The Feb. 26 column in the News Chieftain by Barr y Cronin, “Three examples of why Poway is a great militar y town,” is a heartwarming story, that is, until the second “Bravo Zulu” regarding Bob Hylton in which he is described as a “feisty, grand old leprechaun of a man.” We’re sure it was meant as a humorous and harmless comment, but in reality, the terms used are patronizing and demeaning; the stereotype of a leprechaun to describe one of Irish heritage brings to mind a cartoon character. It’s difficult enough to reach the age of 95 with your independence and dignity intact without being reduced to caricature. Bob strives and succeeds in being a vibrant part of the community as he continues

to serve as an officer of the VFW. He also maintains an active interest in the rest of the world, with his recently published letter to the editor of the U-T stating his opinion regarding the Chargers. Let’s recognize this man with the respect he has earned, not undermine it for a laugh. PAT AND JIM LAWLER Daughter and son-in-law

Just 'do' it The Silverset Park “doo doo” issue is taking on a life of its own. You might think the Poway City Council is

tr ying to negotiate Iran’s nuclear policy. Why not just “do” it and then measure the consequence rather than having a 6-month trial period when the advocates will keep the field pristine just to get the go ahead? The true test will be after that period. To make sure the council has a good understanding of what is actually happening, I would suggest anyone using Silverset Park who comes upon a pile to carefully pick it up with a bag and personally deliver it to a councilman’s front door.

Hillary Clinton blazes past our laws and Constitution Dick Lyles A GET REAL

with the laws they have sworn to obey and uphold (in Hillary’s words, “because it was more convenient”) then our system will fail. Our government will crumble. Our nation will not survive. And let’s get real, here. No matter how the evidence plays out, one way or the other, she broke the law. She either broke the law by not completing the declaration (Form OF-109, required to be signed by all departing government officials) that she had turned over all documents and materials prior to leaving her job, or committed a felony by declaring in the document that she had turned everything over when she hadn’t. However, as serious as these are, they should only serve as the starting point for public concern and outrage. Did Ms. Clinton ever send emails to high-ranking officials of other nations with whom she was dealing as secretary of state asking for donations for her foundation? We know these people were solicited because they gave. What was the context of the solicitation? Did she solicit other favors for others in return for doing favors for them with other nations? Ambassadors can’t engage in such activities, but did she feel she had the right? We may never know because she may have concluded that the emails containing those solicitations were personal and deleted them. Corporate CEOs who circumvent company policy get their chops busted. Democrats who skirt the law expect to move up the ladder. Until these questions are answered, we should not consider her for president. Lyles, a Poway resident, is a business/ management consultant and best-selling author. Reader comments, through letters to the editor or online at pomeradonews.com, are encouraged.

T

he Clintons exhaust me. They make everything including a simple matter of email protocol so damn complicated. They put themselves in the public eye and yet demand privacy; they exempt themselves from the rules, then attack with self-righteous ferocity when they’re called out for their entitlement. And they fail to grasp that they are lightening rods for the GOP and media and must therefore hold themselves to a higher standard than the rest of us. It’s as if they’re addicted to drama, all the while deflecting criticism with accusations of a “right-wing conspiracy.” Emailgate is only latest example of this tired plot. Shortly before being sworn in as secretary of state, Hillary created a private email account hosted on the Clinton family’s server. She explained that this was so she wouldn’t be inconvenienced with two email accounts requiring her to carry two devices — despite the fact she was already on record as carrying more than two devices. There are more holes in her explanation than I have column space for, but I’ll mention the obvious ones: Many professionals — even ones without handlers — carry two devices: one for work, one for personal use. Secondly, you don’t need two devices to manage two email accounts. Phones today allow the user to switch back and forth between numerous email accounts. Even if we gave Hillary the benefit of the doubt and assume that she didn’t understand this, presumably a savvy staff member would have enlightened her. When asked why she didn’t turn over official emails upon leaving office, she explained this away by saying that most of the emails would have been sent to and from people who weren’t playing by their own rules, i.e. those using .gov accounts, therefore the emails were already archived. A year later — spurred by a congressional investigation — the State Department asks for her emails. She turns over approximately half of the emails on her account and explains that her team deleted the rest because they were determined to

Amy Roost AU CONTRAIRE

be of a personal nature. This amounts to a 31,830 email gap, as in an 18-minute gap. Even if, as she claims, she “fully complied with every rule” by which she was governed, it is clear that she skirted the rules and recommendations of the government while relying on others to obey them. As for the real reason Hillary used her private email? That’s obvious to anyone who’s not distracted by all her excuses. Democracies are supposed to be transparent. Records are preserved as evidence of what the government is doing on our dime. If we have any question as to the integrity of those we’ve elected, then we can resort to the Freedom of Information Act. This is one way citizens hold government accountable. Hillary did not want to be accountable. I agree with Dick that we deserve a president who operates within not only the letter of the law but also within the spirit of the law. We need someone who leads by example and is also smart enough not to leave herself open to being secondguessed by her employer and enemies. Instead we’re supposed to “trust” that a woman who has lived under a cloud of controversy for over 20 years did the right thing. To paraphrase another political family, “it wouldn’t be prudent.” “Fool me once and…” Well, you get the picture. As political theater goes, the Clintons were entertaining for a time. Not so any more. It’s time to move on and focus not on whether Hillary can be trusted, but the bigger question of who out there with the chops to be president can be trusted? A former Poway resident, Roost now lives in Encinitas. Reader comments, through letters to the editor or online at pomeradonews. com, are encouraged.

POMERADO NEWSPAPER GROUP

nyone who still thinks President Obama is the all-time best at spurning our laws, the Constitution and the will of the people must have missed Hillary Clinton’s press conference last week. In her never-ending quest to not be outperformed on any level, in a blink of an eye she blazed past him with a display of both arrogance and entitlement that was simply dazzling. Hillary’s message in regard to her use of her own private server to send and receive official emails while secretary of state was both audacious and preposterous. Her overriding message was “trust me,” even though she made several false allegations during her news conference. Telling us all to trust her makes sense to her because, after all, if we’re going to trust her to be president, shouldn’t we also trust her judgment in choosing convenience over legality and appropriateness in the management of her official correspondence while secretary of state? Her strategy didn’t work. A national poll conducted after her press appearance indicated more than half of Americans don’t associate the word “honest” with Ms. Clinton. Certainly, based on the Clintons’ record, there is no basis for trusting her anyway. My guess is that the same person who re-defined sex and then coached Bill to say, “I did not have sex with that woman (Monica Lewsinsky),” is the same person who probably re-defined “personal” and coached her to say the more than 32,000 emails she destroyed had only personal information in them. Here is why all this should concern us. We are a nation of laws, guided by our constitution. But the laws can’t enforce themselves. Nor can we rely solely on law enforcement to ensure compliance. Laws express our collective expression about how we should act to maintain order and integrity. But those aims can only be achieved through voluntary compliance. That’s why we ask elected officials to take an oath of office — to remind them that it is up to them to act with loyalty and honesty toward their office, their country and our constitution. If leaders stop voluntarily complying

The orchestra will follow that piece with the “Symphony No. 31,” by Mozart and the “Symphonic Dances,” by Grieg. “These are engaging pieces of music that have pleased audiences again and again all over the world,” said Matthys. Reiner said that the orchestra is looking to expand in the next 10 years,

not just in size but in their repertoire of music. “We’re much more mature an ensemble (than we started as), and we’re looking forward to doing bigger and better things.” The orchestra is hoping to be able to offer a season brochure in the future announcing their concerts and what they will be performing, to allow people something to look forward

Broncos, Titans among elite again Rancho Bernardo is one of the top teams in the county again and should challenge for a Palomar League title and a spot in the Open Division playoffs. The of fense will be anchored by seniors James and Burchianti. Neyhouse also provides some pop for the Broncos.

BY MICHAEL BOWER The Poway and Rancho Bernardo softball teams are once again among the top teams in the county. Both are looking to rebound after shorter than expected playoff appearances a season ago. Del Norte is young, but should be competitive in Division II. Here is a closer look at the local teams:

PREP BASEBALL PREVIEW

BY MICHAEL BOWER When Jen Lalor first became the Poway High girls soccer coach in 2004, she expected to stay five years and move on with her life. But she loved it so much she stayed for 11 years and has positively influenced hundreds of girls in that time. Before the 2014-2015 season started, Lalor told only her team of her decision to step down at the end of the year. She then made it official with the school before the start of the playoffs. “Leaving had to do with a couple of things,” said Lalor, who has a 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son. “I have been here 11 years and at some point you feel like it is time to move on. I would like to still be in the soccer realm and do some other soccer things. The other big part is my kids. They are still in elementary school, but are needing more time.” Lalor has been a staple in the Poway High girls soccer program. She led the Titans to two San Diego Section final appearances and two Palomar League championships over her 11 years. She posted a career record of 133-83-42. But it was never about winning and losing for Lalor. “It’s not even close to important,” she said. “To me, I got the most pleasure doing things with integrity and trying to connect with these girls at an impressionable age, because they need to be shown the right way right now and I hope to have given that to them.” Senior Jill Godfrey has played all four years under Lalor at Poway. RBHS loaded for a run at section title BY MICHAEL BOWER The Rancho Bernardo High baseball team is again amongst the cream of the crop in the San Diego Section. The Broncos are loaded with young and veteran talent and should challenge for the Open Division championship. Poway has the hitting, but will need the emergence of consistent pitching to be a threat. Del Norte is looking to fill many holes in the lineup after losing several key players to graduation. Maranatha returns its entire roster and should continue to get better under first-year coach Steve Whitley. Here is a closer look at the local teams:

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Burrows' love for hitting has made her a tough out BY MICHAEL BOWER

StoneRidge is currently offering a limited number of full family memberships in each of the following categories: Bryn Burrows will play at USD next year. Photo by Rick Zamora hit. In fact, there were only five games throughout the whole season that she was shutout in the hit column. So, what’s her secret? “I typically like to hit the first strike that I get,” Burrows said. “I usually hit early in the count, because later in the count they just throw me a lot of junk.” Burrows’ athleticism has allowed Kuptz to move her from the outfield to third base, a spot of need for Del Norte this season. Burrows said she prefers to play outfield, but is willing to do whatever the team needs. And that’s part of what makes her a great leader. “She is the only senior and she has really embraced that leadership role,” Kuptz said. “She has become more vocal, but clearly leads by example.

The kids really look up to her and it obviously helps when she is clearly one of the two or three best players on the team.” Burrows will walk on to the USD softball team next year. The Toreros are graduating a few outfielders and she has a chance to earn a starting spot. She always knew she wanted to go to USD. “Two of my aunts went there and I would visit the campus and I just fell in love with it since I was little,” she said. “It has always been a dream of mine to go there and I have always wanted to stay in California.” Burrows achieving her dreams comes as no surprise. After all, once she likes something, she gives 100 percent. And she loves softball, USD and California.

Br yn Burrows grew up playing soccer and basketball. A softball bat didn’t find its way into her hands until she was 10. But once it did there was nothing else she wanted to do except swing it. “I was more passionate about softball than the other sports,” said Burrows, a senior third baseman and outfielder at Del Norte High. “The hitting is my favorite part of it.” And it shows. Burrows has quickly blossomed into one of the top hitters in the county. She hit .410 as a freshman, .468 as a sophomore .380 as a junior and is batting a blistering .636 entering this week. “Some kids that have been playing since they were 4 will never come close to what she has accomplished,” Del Nor te coach Steve Kuptz said. “When Bryn likes something, she goes 100 percent. And she decided she liked softball.” Bur rows will own just about every offensive school record by the time she graduates in June. Her quick hands and lower body strength gives her plenty of pop (she has six career home runs) and her ability to stay focused helps her hit for a high average. “Ver y little flusters her,” Kuptz said. “She is just a gamer. If she strikes out, it’s just like she hit a home run the next time she comes up to the plate. I can’t think of a time, other than maybe her freshman year, that she has had a prolonged slump. It just doesn’t happen.” Last season Burrows did not go more than two games without collecting at least one

PREP BOYS TENNIS PREVIEW

Nighthawks, Broncos look to build on section titles BY MICHAEL BOWER The Rancho Ber nardo High and Del Norte boys tennis teams are coming off San Diego Section championship seasons and looking to repeat. The Broncos lost a few key players, but the Nighthawks have ever yone back and should compete for an Open Division crown. Poway lost a couple of its key players from a season ago and figure to finish in the middle of the pack in the Palomar League. Here is a closer look at the local teams:

Cliff Grant, Jr.; Garrett Johnson, Sr.; Nanami Kadota, Sr.; Nima Naraghi, So.; Connor Zabrocki, Jr. █ Outlook: A few of Poway’s top players decided not to play this season, which has opened a few spots on the roster. Those are being filled by up-and-comers, but it will likely be a few years before the Titans reap the benefits. Boorn will play No. 1 singles and just behind him is Long and Grant. Johnson and Kadota anchor the doubles teams. The Titans should be competitive in the always-tough Palomar League, but will likely finish in the middle of the pack. ****

Rancho Bernardo

â–ˆ Coach: Mike Parrinello,

18th year â–ˆ Next match: Thursday vs. Torrey Pines at Rancho Bernardo, 3:15 p.m. â–ˆ Key players: Allen Gao, Sr.; Erik Graber, Jr.; Brian Fu, Jr.; Sean Wheeler, Jr.; Shane Stoike, Jr.; Nik Steshilov, Fr.; Elyas Obbad, Fr. â–ˆ Outlook: The Broncos captured their first San Diego Section Division I title since 2011, beating Torrey Pines in the sixth straight meeting between the two in the finals last season. Rancho Bernardo lost top player Steven Chen to graduation and Aiku Shintani decided not to play. But the Broncos are still one of the top teams in the sections. Gao is the team captain and incoming freshmen Steshilov and Obbad should have an immediate impact. Expect Rancho Bernardo to be in a battle with Torrey

Pines and Westview for the Palomar League title and maybe the Open Division crown. ****

Finley, a potential high pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, is the ace. The right-hander throws in the low 90s with a devastating curveball. The offense doesn’t feature as much power with Alex Jackson gone to the Seattle Mariners’ organization, but should be able to string together plenty of hits. █ 2015 Division: II █ Key players: CF, Bryn Burrows, Sr.; SS/P., Haley Cruse, Jr.; 2B, Emily Scioscia, Jr.; P/ OF, Anne Marie Prentiss, So.; P/OF, Calista Wendell, Jr.; 1B/OF/P, Melissa Abrahamian, So.; C, Taylor Carr, So. █ Outlook: The Nighthawks have a handful of young stars to go along with senior standout Burrows. The offense will be led by Cruse, Scioscia and Burrows. Cruse, a Stanford commit, hit .488 with four home runs last season. Burrows, who will walk-on at USD next year, hit .380 and drove in 18 runs. “I think we are going to score some runs,” Kuptz said. “I think if the start of the year is any indication we will be more competitive and I think a .500 (record) is a reasonable goal.” Del Norte will make its debut in the Avocado East League, where Escondido is the defending champion and should be strong again.

more season when she was pondering stepping down after the 2013-2014 season. “She just really wants us to be better people on and off the field,” Godfrey said. “She wants us to become mature and she pushes us individually, because she really just wants us to be better people.” Godfrey recalled a few of her favorite Lalor antics on the sideline. “Her celebrations can be pretty extravagant and funny when somebody scores a goal,” Godfrey said with a laugh. “She will just start jumping up and down and hugging everyone and highfiving everyone. It is fun to watch her do that.” It was hard for Lalor to pinpoint a specific favorite memor y from her time at Poway. But she did mention what her favorite part about being a coach has been over the years. “I will say one of the things

that gives me the most pride is memories of my players coming back after they have left the program,” she said. “When they leave and come back a couple years later and tell me the positive impact I have made on them, that is always great. “There have been multiple players that in the moment during the high school season I have been hard on, because I knew they can handle it. And in that moment they didn’t appreciate it, but then they come back and remember the moment and thank me for it. People thanking me after the fact for how much I have helped them is probably the biggest thing I will take away from coaching at Poway. Hopefully, I have had some impact on some of these girls’ lives not just on the soccer field, but as a whole human being.” Lalor has helped many Poway graduates reach the

professional level, including Sarah Devine (2008 grad), Laura Hogan (2008), Alex Webber (2008), Katy Roby (2008) and Nikki Petracca (2007). The Titans went 12-8-2 in Lalor’s final season. They reached the quarterfinals of the San Diego Section Division I playoffs, where they were eliminated by Rancho Bernardo. Lalor said she will still follow the Poway program, despite not being its coach. “I don’t want to make it difficult for the next coach, but I will definitely go to some games,” she said. “I will also be out there at the alumni game. I told all of my players at the last one that I hope to see them out there.” Poway is actively searching for a replacement for Lalor. Those interested can send a résumé to athletic director Damian Gonazalez at dgonzalez@powayusd.com.

singles players. Nesins and Li will anchor the doubles for the defending San Diego Section Division II champions. “We will be in the Open Division this year,” Meoli said. “We are right up there near the top.”

Del Nor te will make its debut in the Avocado East League and should have little trouble securing a title. Peter Thrac is the favorite to capture the individual league championship and advance to the section championships.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. the General Plan. But Poway Road is not protected by Prop FF. Now that Bob’s gone, will the current City Council toss out our height and density restrictions, set off a race to see who can build higher and denser, and turn our little downtown into a wall of glass and concrete that blocks the view of the hills and the mountains, with traffic so clogged noone wants to go there? Gradually, old signs were replaced with more tasteful types and sizes. Bob achieved arch-villain status in the business community for the council’s plan to replace the “chicken lane” with a planted median (they eventually came around to admitting it was a good thing). Since then, Poway Road has gentrified, gradually but steadily, while keeping to
