BY EMILY SORENSEN A group of parents, teachers, local business owners, community leaders and former Poway Unified School district leadership have come together to form a coalition to elect school board trustees who they say will focus on student needs and the district’s educational reputation for excellence.

Called the Coalition for Effective School Board Leadership, the group, which numbers about 20, aims to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of school board business through the endorsement of candidates in the November election, according to a press release. Two seats on the school board currently held by Andy Patapow and

BY EMILY SORENSEN An effort to recall Poway Unified School District Board of Education member Andy Patapow has ended. Keith Wilson, who has headed up the Committee to Recall Patapow, said the withdrawal of its petition was due to several factors, including the cost of an election to taxpayers and Patapow’s decision not to run for reelection. “In light of the fact that Mr. Patapow has promised not to seek re-election, the Committee to Recall Andy Patapow has been persuaded that its resources are better directed at recruiting a candidate to replace Patapow in November,” said Wilson in a press release. The campaign to recall Patapow began in September and aimed to remove Patapow due to his support of the use of capital appreciation bonds to help finance the renovation of older campuses in the district, which he voted for in 2010 and 2011. Patapow is the only member of the 2011 board still serving. The committee’s press release also states that as one of the major objectives of the recall effort was to oust Collins. Collins has not officially announced that he plans to retire or leave the district; however, he and the school board have both hired their own legal representation and have been engaging in closed-session meetings that are speculated to be about Collins’s departure from the district. His

current contract expires June 2017. Wilson also said that the committee agreed that there was no need to “throw away good money” on a recall election when Patapow will be leaving the board in November. “We agreed that it was a shame to waste money since November is moving in fast,” he said. In order to secure a spot on the June ballot, the committee would have had to obtain 10,767 valid signatures from registered voters living in the district and have had all the signatures verified by late April. If they missed this deadline, a special election would have to be held at great cost to the district. On Monday, Wilson estimated that the group had collected approximately 8,000 signatures by the end of December. The Registrar of Voters estimated in January that it could cost the district between $540,000 to $640,000 to hold a special election to recall Patapow. Instead, the press release said, the committee will now focus on the future and “ensure a functioning board that truly values our students, and exhibits honesty, integrity, transparency, duty and fiscal responsibility.” The committee is currently seeking qualified prospective candidates to run for election to the school board in November. Those interested in potential endorsement and campaign support should contact recallpatapow@aol.com or visit www.recallpatapow.com.

BY EMILY SORENSEN The San Diego Toy and Doll Museum will be closing its doors on April15. The museum opened in the Old Poway Village Shopping Center in December of 2014, and was officially completed in March 2015. The closure is due to the museum’s president, Elisa Ballard, moving out of the area. Ballard said no one was willing to take over the museum from her. The museum is currently selling its gift shop stock and some unneeded museum items at 50 percent off until the closure. It will reopen for a final sale on April 30 for one day only. The core part of the museum’s collection will go with Ballard and her husband to San

Francisco, where they are moving to take care of Ballard’s brother, who is recovering from a stroke. “In the first part of the year, we decided to close,” said Ballard. “My brother wasn’t getting better, and the funding we needed (to stay open) wasn’t coming in.” Ballard said she advertised to find someone to take over the museum from her, but there wasn’t interest in San Diego. There was, however, interest from someone in the Bay Area who is interested in opening a toy museum there. Ballard said the International Toy Museum, a non-profit, is looking to open their museum in Oakland and wants the San Diego Toy and Doll Museum’s collection to be a part of the new museum.

PUSD names three Teachers of the Year Teachers from Abraxas, Meadowbrook and Del Norte were honored BY EMILY SORENSEN Three teachers were honored on Wednesday morning as the Poway Unified School District 2016-17 District Teachers of the Year. Carole DeBruin, Joe Gizzo and Megan Gross were surprised in their classrooms by district staff and last year’s winners. A committee of district and site representatives selected the three teachers based on criteria which included innovations inside the classroom, contributions to their schools and the district, and commitment to their students. All three teachers will be submitted to the San Diego County Office of Education’s Teacher of the Year Recognition Program, which honors up to six teachers a year from all of San Diego County. DeBruin, a 40-year teaching veteran with 19 of those years spent in PUSD, is a math teacher at Abraxas High School. She says she helps her students rediscover the joys of learning and helps build their self-worth. In her classroom, her students

tackle real-world problems and projects that emphasize community involvement, and she also helps empower students through an on-site Abraxas leadership club, according to a press release from the Poway Unified School District. The club brings together special-needs adults in the Transition program and diploma-bound students to work together to enact positive change in their community. Some of the projects the leadership club has worked on recently including collecting toys for “Toys for Tots” and jeans for “Jeans 4 Vets,” as well as putting on a Transition prom. DeBruin also helped in creating the Abraxas High community garden and is currently working on securing a grant to build “tiny homes” on campus to be used by homeless students. Gizzo is a 16-year veteran of PUSD and works at Meadowbrook Middle School as the ASB/Leadership advisor, yearbook advisor and digital photography teacher. He also created the school’s

award-winning digital photography program from the ground up, working with the Museum of Photographic Arts to teach students artistic creativity using a camera, according to a press release from the Poway Unified School District. Gizzo teaches his classes through the My Connect learning system, which allows his students to learn independently and apply their knowledge in practical ways, he said. Thanks to Gizzo’s digital photography program, Meadowbrook Middle School students have won more awards in photography at the San Diego County Fair than any other middle school in San Diego County.

Gross, who has been teaching for eight years, has spent the last three as the special education teacher at Del Norte High School. Gross’s goal in the classroom is to achieve access to general education curriculum for all of her special education students, even those perceived as the most challenged due to behavior or limited communication skills, according to a press release from the Poway Unified School District. She and her team have supported students transitioning from spending the entire day in special education classrooms to taking general education courses for credit and earning their high school

diplomas, she said. With her help, her students have gone on to community college and four-year universities. When age or grade-appropriate textbooks or materials aren’t available for Gross’s special education students, she creates her own. Gross has developed modified books to give her students access to material like “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Romeo and Juliet.” She has also published a training manual to close the gap in special education raining among teachers. When she’s not busy teaching and developing new material, Gross SEE TEACHERS, A15

Miss Poway says goodbye to crown 54th annual pageant is Saturday BY EMILY SORENSEN The current Miss Poway, Stacy Walden, will be saying goodbye to her title and welcoming a new queen at the 54th annual Miss Poway Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, April 2. The pageant will begin at 4 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road. Tickets are $10 general admission an are available by calling 619-823-8832 or contacting Pageant Director Sharon Gruber at misspoway@gmail.com. The pageant always sells out, so get your tickets early. This year, 39 young women will be competing for three titles: Miss Poway (ages 17 to 24), Miss Teen Poway (ages 15 to 16) and Miss Junior Teen Poway (ages 12 to 14). For Walden, the past year as Miss Poway has been an experience that has helped shape her future, she said. Walden, now 19 and a Westview High School graduate who is studying communications at San Diego State University, said her experience volunteering as Miss

Poway helped her discover her love for working in the community. “I’m getting really into working in San Diego, looking for internships,” said Walden. “I still want to be a spokesperson in the community. I want to connect my major with my volunteer work.” As Miss Poway, Walden said she and her fellow queens, Miss Teen Poway Jackie Petescia and Miss Junior Teen Poway Evelyne Eng, did about 200 hours of community service. Her favorite event was one honoring fallen firefighters in downtown San Diego, where local firefighters and organizations wore the name of a firefighter who died in the aftermath of 9-11 and climbed the stairs of the Hyatt hotel three times, to simulate climbing the World Trade Center towers. “We got to listen to a speaker who was in the lobby of the World Trade Center when the buildings were attacked,” said Walden. “Hearing her speak was so moving because she’s gone through so much and still came out so positive. I love hearing about empowering others.”

Crowned last year were Miss Junior Teen Poway Evelyne Eng, Miss Poway Stacy Walden and Miss Teen Poway Jackie Petescia. Walden said she also got to climb the stairs of the Hyatt hotel during the event, but only took one trip instead of three. “It gave me a feel for what firefighters do on a daily basis,” she said. Spending time with her fellow queens and her court was also a highlight of being Miss Poway, Walden said. “I love my queens, I’ve gotten so

close to them,” said Walden. “They’ve made a huge impact on my year. We’ve become good friends, and seeing what they’ve accomplished at such young ages is so inspiring. I’m excited to see what they will do in the future.” As for the new queens who will be crowned on Saturday, Walden’s advice was to enjoy every second of being queen and participate in

Autism advocate Temple Grandin to speak in Poway Tickets on sale for April 27 appearance Internationally-known autism advocate and animal behavior expert Dr. Temple Grandin will speak in Poway on Wednesday, April 27. Tender Loving Canines Assistance Dogs, Inc. is hosting a talk by Grandin starting at 6:45 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $45 each, with a militay discount available. A special VIP package, which includes a meet-and-greet with Grandin and an autographed copy of her book, is being offered for $150. Grandin’s life story was the subject of the 2010 award-winning HBO biopic “Temple Grandin.” Claire Danes won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her portrayal of Grandin. At the age of 2, Grandin had no speech and all the signs of severe autism. Today, she is a professor at Colorado State University and is known for being a prominent

proponent of the rights of autistic persons and of animal welfare. With autism prevalence figures growing and now affecting 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys, Grandin says that the skills that people with autism bring to the table should be nurtured, for their benefit and for the benefit of our society. “I like the really logical way that I think. I’m totally logical. In fact, it kind of blows my mind how irrational human beings are,” said Grandin. “If you totally got rid of autism, you’d have nobody to fix your computer in the future.” The proceeds from this event will benefit TLCAD’s Leash-On-Life Scholarship Fund to provide service dogs to individuals on the autism spectrum in San Diego County, including military families. FROM COALITION, A1 Leadership is a grass-roots campaign that brings together people who care about students and the Poway Unified School District. Being one of the highest performing districts in the state, it is our mission to return to the PUSD Board of Education to the level of professionalism and excellence that our district deserves.” The coalition also states in the press release that all school board trustees have a duty to oversee school district policy and to work collegially to make the district the best it can be, and says that it is the ideal time for the community to return control of the board to trustees who will act in the best interest of students and who will maintain the district’s reputation for excellence in education. There are six key criteria that the coalition identifies that all qualified school board trustees should embody, according to the press release. These criteria include demonstrating personal integrity, promoting a positive atmosphere and respecting diverse viewpoints; demonstrating focus on students and the educational reputation of PUSD; demonstrating the ability to build a consensus; understanding the complex issues related to all aspects of public education; understanding school board governance and the role of a school board member; and advocating fiscal responsibility and transparency with an understanding of California education funding. Karen Harkins Slocomb, a former high school representative to the school board, parent and a member of the coalition said in the press release, “I have been concerned about what I have observed in recent months at PUSD school board meetings, and I’m excited to be part of this coalition. It’s an opportunity to help make sure that our district continues to focus on students.” The coalition is currently seeking qualified candidates who are willing to run in the November election. Candidates who wish to seek the endorsement of the coalition should contact Coalition4EffectiveSchoolBoard@gmail.com or visit www.coalition4effectiveschoolboard.com.

More parking opens at two city lots Extras spaces at Iron Mountain, Lake Poway The city of Poway on March 23 celebrated the addition of more than 80 parking spaces at two of the city’s most popular recreation destinations: the Iron Mountain trail and the Lake Poway Recreational Park. The parking lot expansionprojects were designed to increase visitor access and safety. “Poway is so well known for its open space and trails folks come from near and far to enjoy them,” said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Iron Mountain lot. “Projects like these are an important way we can ensure that visitors and residents alike have an exceptional experience.” Parking at both locations have long been at a premium during peak use. At Iron Mountain, rangers estimate more than 300 hikers are on the trail at any given time during busy weekends. In 2010, the city built a 100-space lot to alleviate hikers parking and walking along Highway 67. The current project added 20 spaces and was made possible through city funds and the County of San Diego Neighborhood Reinvestment Program (NRP). The NRP grants help fund community, social, educational, environmental, cultural and recreational needs. The Lake Poway project adds 61 spaces

The park is also a popular spot for hikers heading up to the famed “Potato Chip Rock” on Mt. Woodson, one of San Diego County’s most popular selfie destinations. The lot’s design minimized the loss of natural landscaping and existing trees while saving the park water by removing grass. Other improvements included a new stage for Poway’s summer concert series. The ribbon cutting ceremony marked the project’s completion, with remarks by both Vaus and San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob.

“It’s great to team up with Poway,” Jacob said. “This project is just one small piece of a much bigger vision for the area. The city and county are working closely to open up recreational opportunities for hikers, riders and others.” Jacob shared that efforts are underway to create a network of trails that will someday link Iron Mountain, Dos Picos County Park, Mt. Woodson, Lake Poway and other recreational treasures. She said that the county just learned it’s due to receive a $200,000 state habitat conservation grant to help buy 160 of the 800 acres they are focusing to preserve.

Elks install new exalted ruler Norm Kaufman was installed as exalted ruler of Poway Elks Lodge No. 2543 during ceremonies held March 22 at the lodge. Kaufman moved to Poway at the age of 4, Norm Kaufman attended local schools, and graduated from Poway High School. As a youth he participated in many Poway sports programs that were nationally recognized. The owner of a small contracting business for the past 19 years, he has been an Elk for the past four years. The lodge will celebrate its 40th anniversary in September. It has 373 members including Mayor Steve Vaus and City Councilman Jim Cunningham. Lodge activities focus on the community, assisting with service men and women, veterans and youth programs.

EDITORIAL

Important lesson at Poway High THUMBS UP to the California Highway Patrol and to Poway High School officials for putting on an “Every 15 Minutes” program, a simulated but extremely realistic display of a fatal drunk driving accident. The accident was staged on Titan Way and was viewed by members of the school’s junior and senior classes. It’s been done before, but the impact is always the same: a sobering reminder to young drivers. An important lesson learned, we hope. THUMBS UP to the Poway Unified School District for deciding to install privacy stalls in the locker rooms in all middle and high schools. The stalls will be available for students who, for whatever reason, are uncomfortable changing in front of other students. THUMBS DOWN to the City of San Diego for shortening the stamped concrete median constructed on the north side of West Bernardo Drive near its intersection with Rancho Bernardo Road. It was to be 230 feet long, but after reportedly receiving “requests from the community,” the median was shortened to 150 feet. This was after 80-plus additional feet of road was torn up and some of the median constructed. The final — shorter — median does nothing to deter vehicles from crossing traffic lanes and causing accidents when entering or exiting the new Phil’s BBQ or the gas station. Wasn’t that the point of the median? Its counterpart on the south side prevents crossing traffic to and from the other gas station/shopping center. THUMBS UP to members of the Poway City Council for having the backbone to buck possible political backlash and increase their salaries, effective after the November election. No increases have been approved in Poway for eight years. Under state law, salaries can be increased up to 5 percent a year, meaning the Poway salaries could have been jacked up 40 percent. Instead, the council voted to raise their monthly pay by 14.5 percent and to make the elected mayor’s salary 40 percent higher than council pay, reflecting the position’s additional responsibilities. Mayor Steve Vaus took the lead on this touchy subject and handled it very well. THUMBS UP to the three PUSD teachers and two non-teachers honored this month with top honors. Carole DeBruin (Abraxas High), Joe Gizzo (Meadowbrook Middle School) and Megan Gross (Del Norte High) have been selected as “Teachers of the Year” in the district and will be considered for countrywide recognition. Christa McIntosh (Stone Ranch Elementary) and Nancy Dannhauser, (district office) were selected as “Classified Employees of the Year.” Congratulations to each of these outstanding employees!

OUR READERS WRITE One angry Powegian ...

... and another one

I’m angry. Our city is going to knock down perfectly good buildings in Community Park to spend $20 million to replace those with new buildings. It’s spending $1.8 million to do this right now. They have no idea how they will pay for those buildings, but it’s happening. I’m angry the city manager and the newspaper tell me my water bill is going up and I should just accept that. We cut our water consumption so we are charged more. Both tell me there are perfectly good reasons why I just have to do what they tell me, because, I guess, they think I’m stupid. I’m angry my power bill goes higher. My internet too. These are monopolies that my city does nothing about. I’m angry that we are spending another $240K on fire services. The deputy chief’s position might cost us $200K. I know hard working CEOs don’t make that. I’m angry the highest paid firefighter in all of San Diego was in Poway. I’m most angry the only place I can legally run my dog off leash has one light that broke and it will take over two weeks to fix that light. The city threatened removing the grass to “save water.” We spoke up. As punishment, I guess, the grass is in bad shape. Our local government has lots of excuses. I’m not the only one angry! Jonathan Ry Poway

The March 17 News Chieftain story about changes at the Poway Fire Department is a specimen of fine wordsmithing. Twice in the article a statement is made that the new structure will “save the city money,” yet the new organizational structure will cost the tax payer $197,000 more annually. I am not sure I understand how a higher taxpayer liability equals savings. The article goes on to mention the division chief’s response time would improve by three minutes – maybe. Can the fire department provide information explaining how three minutes of savings in the division chief’s response time made a difference in the outcome? A bigger question is: why is a division chief needed for incident response? Isn’t that the responsibility of the captains? Lastly, the new position is for a 56- hour work week with straight overtime. But the 56 hours are continuous, so in reality, they are working two days and eight hours a week. Why is the tax payer on the hook for large overtime premium when a large portion of the time is spent in sleep and recreation? In reality, this move sounds like a well-crafted maneuver to force a pay structure change for the Poway taxpayer, with zero return on investment to them. Assi Friedman Poway

Get Real BY DICK LYLES

Trust in candidates no longer important?

A

s usual, most political polls gain headlines by calling out which candidates are winning, gaining, or slipping in minds of voters. But we should all be losing sleep over a subset of statistics buried in recent polling data. These relate to how voters perceive presidential contenders on honesty and trustworthiness. It used to be that if a major political candidate lost voters’ trust, it meant their candidacy was doomed to fail. Now, however, it appears the majority of voters couldn’t care less about the honesty or trustworthiness of their favorite candidate. It’s the only logical explanation for what the polls show. George Burns once said, “Acting is all about honesty. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” The same principle used to apply to politics. Apparently politicians no longer need even to fake it. For several months now, two-thirds

of those polled in most major polls say they don’t trust either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. Yet both hold significant leads in the number of delegates they’ve acquired for their party’s respective nominations. This has never happened before, which raises several interesting questions. Since evidence abounds that both candidates play fast and loose with the truth and neither has qualms tailoring facts and history to support whatever position either is hawking at the moment, one question we should ask is, “What is the matter with the one-third of the electorate (which is a different one-third in each case) who won’t acknowledge their candidate’s lack of integrity?” These are the people who give credence to the axiom that blind loyalty is the liar’s most useful tool. A far more important question is, “How can either candidate win so many delegates in their respective primary when so many people rightly

The election of either Trump or Clinton will signal that America has crossed a significant threshold.

don’t trust them?” Equally as scary, we should ask, “How can it be that either might win the presidency when a super majority of voters know neither can be trusted to serve the common good and both have benefitted more than almost any other American alive by manipulating the system for their personal gain?” A win by either Trump or Clinton means a majority of American voters will have trusted that person to solve America’s problems and put the country on a path toward a future where everyone benefits and prospers. But when the winning candidate fails to keep his or her promises and the choice of the people turns out to be a mistake, then who should we blame? The mistake will be ours for having given that person our trust when we knew she or he was not worthy of such trust. Stated another way, the election of either Trump or Clinton will signal that America has crossed a significant threshold. It will mean we’ve cast aside traditional values such as character, honesty, ethics, and

integrity in favor of selfishness and self-centeredness, and single issue politics. It will also mean that people care more about tearing our country down rather than building coalitions and solving problems in a manner that serves the common good. Cronyism will finally reign supreme over capitalism as America cascades to find its position among the mediocrity that defines the rest of the civilized world. Voters shouldn’t decide how to vote by asking, “Which of these two is the lesser evil?” Rather, we should ask, “Which of these two will manipulate the system for personal gain at the expense of the country more than the other?” Then, after realizing both will rip off the general public in epic proportions, voters should wake up and vote for someone who will serve America. — Lyles, a Poway resident, is a business management consultant and best-selling author. This year’s Poway Rodeo queens announced Two young women have been selected to represent the Poway Rodeo for the next year. The Poway Rodeo Committee has announced that Bridgette LaHaye will hold the title of 2016 Miss Poway Rodeo while Lacey Bainbridge will be the 2016 Miss Poway Rodeo Junior Queen. The committee decided not to hold a competitive pageant this year, according to spokeswoman Darci Van Meter. The two women will be “crowned” at a party to be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 at Kaminski’s BBQ and Sports Lounge.

The free event will include a free nacho bar and raffle and live auction opportunities. Tickets for the annual Poway Redeo, to be held Sept. 23 and 24, will be sold as well. LaHaye, 19, is an Escondido resident and was the 2011 and 2012 Poway Rodeo Junior Queen. She has also held the title of Teen Miss Rodeo California. Bainbridge lives in Valley Center and held the title of 2014 Valley Center Rodeo Young Miss. She was the 2013 Junior National Mileage champion after completing over 1,000 miles of endurance horseback riding.

900 WINS!

RB High’s Blalock reaches another milestone

“ BY JOHN MAFFEI t’s only a number, says Sam Blalock. But it’s a very large and significant number. With Rancho Bernardo’s 13-2 win over Eastlake in the Classic Division of the 66th Lions Tournament on Marc 23, Blalock hit the 900-win plateau. Only two other high school baseball coaches in California — John Stevenson (1,059) at El Segundo and Guy Anderson (927) at Rancho Cordova — have more career wins. Only 26 coaches nationally have reached 900 wins. Many of those are in the Midwest, where summer ball is counted in a coach’s win total. “Honestly, it’s just another number,” said Blalock, 67. “It means a lot more to other people. To me, it’s just baseball.” The victory propelled Ranch Bernardo (7-2) into today’s semifinal at noon at Cathedral Catholic. The winner advances to the 3:30 p.m. final at Cathedral. Tora Otsuka paced host RB on Wednesday with a three-run homer and five RBIs. Calvin Mitchell had a two-run homer for the second straight day. Joey Magrisi pitched five strong innings for the win. “It’s an honor to be the winning pitcher in this game,” Magrisi said. “Hopefully, people will always remember who the pitcher was when Coach Blalock won his 900th. “Playing on a team of this caliber for a coach of this caliber feels so good. You’d never know Coach Blalock is in his 60s. He relates to the guys. He acts young.” Blalock started his varsity coaching career in 1975 at Mt. Carmel.

Poway High thrower Colton Clark set the school record for the longest toss in the shot put at Saturday’s Mt. Carmel Invite. The senior registered a mark of 54 feet, 4.25 inches. It was good enough for a fourth-place finish in Division III. Clark took third in the discus (160-06). Other highlights from the meet included a second-place finish by Rancho Bernardo’s Burak Tufekci in the boys Division II 1,600-meter race (4 minutes, 22.75 seconds), a third-place finish by the Broncos’ Kassady Learn in the Division I girls 3,200 (11:39.89), a second-place finish by Poway’s Rebecca Zaitz in the girls Division I triple jump (34-0.75), a second-place finish by the Broncos’ Nia Akins in the girls Division II 800 (2:14.16) and a first-place finish by Rancho Bernardo sophomore Tori Palacki in the Division II girls high jump (5-00).

Rancho Bernardo baseball coach Sam Blalock tips his hat for the applause from the crowd after he recorded his 900th career win with the team's 13-2 victory over Eastlake last week. After 300 wins, nine league titles and four San Diego Section championships, he left the Sundevils in 1990 to start the Rancho Bernardo program. Overall, he has 22 league titles and 12 section championships. Blalock’s prize pupil at Mt. Carmel was Billy Beane, who was drafted in the first round by the New York Mets in 1980. Beane is now the executive vice president of baseball operations for the Oakland A’s and one of the most-respected men in the game. “It’s kind of scary,” Beane said. “Sam and I have been friends for more than 40 years. It reminds me of how young

he was at Mt. Carmel. And really, he’s still a kid at heart. I think working with kids is what keeps him young. “I tried to get him into college coaching. As good as he is in high school, he could have built a college team into a powerhouse. He has found a way to teach the game and have fun at the same time.” Beane is one of nine first-round draft picks who have played for Blalock. The others include Cole Hamels, Danny Putnam, Allan Dykstra, John Drennen, Matt Wheatland, Scott Heard, Jaime Jones and Alex Jackson. SEE BLALOCK, B4

Samohin wins gold Daniel Samohin bounced back in the biggest of ways and now he is a world champion. The junior ice skater, who does all of his training at the Poway Ice Arena, rebounded from a ninth-place finish in the short program with a magnificent performance in the free skate to capture the prestigious International Skating Union Junior World Championships title in Hungary on March 18. Samohin landed three quadruple jumps in his free skate to earn the top spot with a personal-best score of 165.38. That was enough to propel him into first place overall with a score of 236.65. The 18-year-old is the first Israeli skater to medal at the Junior Worlds and the first to win an ISU championship.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Life-changing walk paying off for Jusay, Broncos BY TERRY MONAHAN Were it not for a simple walk in the park, Janina Jusay probably would not have wound up playing softball. Jusay, then just 8, and her dad walked through Rancho Bernardo Community Park when she saw some girls practicing softball one day. “I asked if I could play that, just for fun, and he said yes,’’ Jusay recalled. “He agreed right away. I didn’t have to convince him.’’ It turns out that might have been the best decision of her life. Now a junior center fielder at Rancho Bernardo, Jusay has progressed far enough to have verbally committed to San Diego State. Born in the Philippines, Jusay has lived in Rancho Bernardo since the family moved her from Arizona when she was in first grade. “I just love San Diego,’’ she said. “I never thought I would go anywhere in San Diego, but on my visit to SDSU I felt right at home. “I can’t describe what it was. I just knew it was where I want to spend my four years of college.’’ The 5-foot-5 Jusay said she plans to either major in nursing while she plays for the Aztecs or conclude her eligibility before entering the nursing program. Jusay is a unique package of speed and raw power. She’s already hit a few home runs, but she terrorizes defenses on the basepath. A single or a walk is almost instantly turned into extra bases when Jusay starts stealing bases. “She’s one of the fastest players I’ve ever coached,’’ Rancho Bernardo coach Summer Boyle said. “Very few catchers have thrown her out. “She’ll steal second and almost immediately she’ll steal third and if the defense gets rattled she’ll score when the throw to third base sails into the outfield.’’ Despite her speed on the basepath, Jusay

Janina Jusay makes a diving catch during a game last season. resisted the tradition of becoming a left-handed slap hitter to maximize that speed. Jusay prefers to dig into the batter’s box and take her best hacks at pitches. “Speed is only a part of my game,’’ she said. “It’s nice to steal a few bases and it’s nice to have power. “I just want to hit the ball solidly every time up. Home runs aren’t my favorite hit. It’s nice when it happens, but base running is my favorite thing. That’s fun for me.’’ What thrills Boyle the most is watching how the intermittent flashes of brilliance Jusay showed

last year have turned into total consistency this season. “She’s come into her own,’’ Boyle said. “She did it last year but only in short spurts. She’s matured to the point where we’ve seen the best she has to offer all the time.’’ With only four returning starters and a roster with five freshmen on it, Jusay accepted a new leadership role. The leadoff hitter’s influence must be helping. The Broncos, despite their youth, raced off to an 8-2-1 start this season.

“I used to hit much lower in the order, but now I love leadoff,’’ Jusay said. “You set the tone for the entire game. My job is to start something so the rest of the team can follow. “I was a little nervous at the time. I used to sit and watch my teammates and see how the pitcher worked them, but now I’m the one working the pitcher and taking that info back to my teammates.’’ That’s something you can’t learn walking in the park. — Monahan is a freelance writer

ALUMNI REPORT

New challenge ahead for PHS grad Beeler BY TERRY MONAHAN With his college basketball career officially concluded, Sam Beeler admitted it seems like only yesterday he arrived on the UC Santa Barbara campus fresh out of Poway. The 6-foot-10 center concluded his Titan career with a third first-team All-Palomar League selection before selecting the Gauchos. “I was looking for a great school and I found it,’’ Beeler said. “I got everything I could have asked for and more. “I couldn’t have picked a better place. Other schools I was considering four years ago, their coaching staffs are no longer together. “I remember the first day I came up here and now I’m a few weeks from graduating from college.’’ Now Beeler is ready to move on to a new challenge following a senior year at Santa Barbara where he played a more significant role. After three seasons of backing up Alan Williams, who just signed a

multi-year contract with the Phoenix Suns, Beeler was thrust into a bigger role. Beeler responded by leading the Big West Conference in field goal percentage with an astounding .710 in 31 regular-season games. He also set career marks for minutes played, points, rebounds and assists. He also led the team with 21 blocks. “I was very excited to have a bigger leadership role on the team this year,’’ said Beeler, who never missed a game with the Gauchos over four seasons. “Before the season, coach said this was my year to remember. I was ready for it.’’ What Beeler is not entirely ready for is what comes next. Now that Santa Barbara competed in the inaugural Vegas 16 Tournament, which matched up teams left out of the NCAA Tournament as well as the NIT Tournament, Beeler is contemplating the opportunities to continue playing as a professional abroad in Europe. Big men are just as much of a premium over there as

they are in any league in this country. The thought of leaving the country is as unsettling as it was to leave Poway and move into a dormitory room four years ago or into his first apartment last year. It’s something totally new. “The biggest thing I wasn’t prepared for was moving into my apartment and realizing my parents or someone else wasn’t there to do a lot for me,’’ Beeler admitted. “I had to learn how to live on my own and quickly. Mom wasn’t there to cook for me. “It sounds so easy to say you can live on your own, but learning how the world works isn’t easy. You open the fridge and there’s no food there unless you go buy some. “I learned a lot of things pretty quickly.’’ Beeler dreams of using his college degree in film and media studies and carving out a career in the film industry. After spending endless hours working in the school’s film archive SEE BEELER, B4

FROM BEELER, B3 on campus, Beeler became enthralled with the history of movies, how films used to be made and how the process has matured over the generations. “I think it’s important to go back and understand how movies were made decades ago,’’ Beeler said. “You have to have some

appreciation for all that. “It was kind of cool to see that movies were on reels and movie theaters would have to switch machines because a full movie couldn’t fit on one reel. “The whole thing was eye-opening.’’ That’s what college is supposed to be all about. — Monahan is a freelance writer

The Rancho Bernardo baseball team congratulates coach Sam Blalock (center) on this 900th career win. FROM BLALOCK, B1 Right-hander Drew Finley led Rancho Bernardo to the section Open Division championship last year. He finished 11-1 with a 0.81 ERA and was the winning pitcher in the title game against La Costa Canyon. Finley was drafted in the third round by the New York Yankees. “Coach Blalock’s record speaks for itself,” Finley said by phone from the Yankees’ spring training camp in Tampa. “Believe me, across the nation, people know Rancho Bernardo baseball. Not because of me, Billy Beane or Cole Hamels. Because of Sam Blalock. “He has the ability to take a group of individuals and mold them into a team. “Coach Blalock knows his stuff, but he lets his coaches coach. Mark Furtak (pitching coach) and Rick Ray (hitting coach) could be head coaches anywhere. But they stayed at RB because Coach Blalock has a plan and sticks to it.” Furtak has been with Blalock for 27 years. Ray for more than a decade. Juan Aukerman, who played at RB, is the freshman coach. Former Bronco Kevin How has the JV team. “Sam and I feed off each other,” Furtak said. “We get along great, but his coaches aren’t afraid to voice an opinion. “We’re not afraid to tell him things, to contradict him. He may not always agree, but he doesn’t want a bunch of head-nodders on his staff. That’s a major part of his success.” Blalock also has the respect of his fellow coaches. Just last week, Steve Vickery — who coached at Valhalla and El Capitan — fell from No. 2 to No. 3 on San Diego’s all-time win list behind Manny Hermosillo of Montgomery. Hermosillo has 651 wins, Vickery 647. “What Sam has done is incredible,” Vickery said. “He has made every other coach in the county better. You either got better to keep up or got stepped on. “I have a ton of respect for the guy. Not just because he’s a great coach and teacher, but because he loves what he does. “He coaches high school players like they were in college. He coaches them to step in at the next level. Latin music comes to RB with April 3 concert BY EMILY SORENSEN Enjoy a Latin concert on Sunday, April 3 with performances by YPOs City Heights Mariachi and Jarabe Mexicano. The free concert will start at 4 p.m. and run for about an hour at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, 17010 Pomerado Road in Rancho Bernardo. Donations are appreciated. The show will be opened by the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra’s City Heights Mariachi band. The group, made up of about 20 musicians ranging in age from 10 to 70, practice out of the YPO City Heights Music School. “We have a great mix of musicians, about half adults and half kids,” said Victoria Eicher, president of YPO. “It’s a great experience for everybody. It’s not often that you get a chance to perform with people who aren’t your own age.” City Heights Mariachi will be performing three songs, “Guadalajara,” “El son del conejo” and “Las aguacates.” “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Eicher of the songs the group will be performing. “It’s a neat thing to bring to Rancho Bernardo. It mixes it up a bit with the classical programs. This one is much more culturally oriented.” City Heights Mariachi began in 2006 being led by Jeff Nevins, a well-known

As coaches were brought in for violin and guitar players, the group expanded into the City Heights Music School, where it added piano and voice instruction. It became part of the YPO organization in January.

City Heights Mariachi has been on-and-off since its inception, said Eicher, due to periods where musicians with the proper skills were busy with other projects, or simply didn’t exist in the area. City Heights Mariachi is currently headed up by Mario Eguía, a musician

with 14 years of Mariachi experience. Currently a music education undergraduate at San Diego State University, he will be playing double-duty at the April 3 concert, as he is also a member of Jarabe Mexicano. Eicher said Eguía was a “perfect match” for the City Heights Mariachi program. “He brings a lot of charisma and enthusiasm to the program,” she said. Eguía has previously performed with several renowned mariachi groups, including Los Camperos de Nati Cano, Sol De Mexico, Nuevo Tecalitlan and Mariachi Vegas. The bulk of the concert will feature music from Jarabe Mexicano, whose musical repertoire includes traditional boleros, huapangos, sones and rancheras, as well as more contemporary cumbias, reggae, doo wop and American standards. Jarabe Mexicano is made up of SDSU students studying music. “They’re very education-oriented,” said Eicher. “Great voices. There is a nice variety of songs they will be performing.” For more information on the concert or the City Heights Mariachi program, call 858-324-4160 or conyact info@yposd.org. pet of the week Mr. Boo, a 3-year-old Domestic Short Hair mix, is looking for a new best friend. This cat is always ready for more attention and isn’t the least bit shy and loves to beg for cuddles. Mr. Boo is also leash trained, and loves to walk on his harness! Mr. Boo’s only set back is that he has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). While the name sounds intimidating, FIV is a very manageable condition. It causes cats to be less able to fight infections, but with good care, many FIV+ cats live happy, normal lifespans. Because of his condition, Mr. Boo will need to be an indoor-only cat, and either housed alone or with other FIV+ cats. Mr. Boo is available for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society’s adoption center at The CaT Café loCaTed aT 472 3rd ave, San diego. To learn more please call (619) 786-2289 or viSiT SdhuMane.org. Don’t let healthy food glitches derail good eating habits

S

And raw kale, generally is rough on the digestive system found to cause bloating, flatulence and other intestinal discomfort. So chop in hearty soups, stews, risottos, pilafs, stir-fries, omelettes, and pasta dishes, and eat to your heart’s (and gut’s) content. Cook’s tip: Remove tough center stem, or buy baby kale for sweeter, more tender leaves.

Wilted Kale and Chickpea Salad ■ Ingredients: • 14 ounces (2 packages) baby or regular kale, sliced in strips • 1 cup chickpeas • 1/2 red onion, diced • 1 teaspoon honey

Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit

ometimes when we eat supercharged foods, we experience unpleasant, uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms from bloating to bad breath. However, there are ways to make these foods friendly and simpatico with your system so you can continue to enjoy the planet’s healthiest offerings.

No Need to Bail on Kale

This mighty green crucifer with Herculean healing powers is practically good for everything but shining your shoes. For starters, this low calorie treasure is anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, anti-aging and antioxidant with 45 assorted flavonoids to put the skids on harmful free radicals. Detoxifying, cholesterol-busting (especially when cooked), and packed with phytonutrients, including Vitamin K for building bones and warding off osteoporosis, immune-boosting Vitamin C, a trio of stress calming B’s, Vitamin A and lutein for skin and eye health, calcium, fiber and heart-happy omega-3’s. Alas, kale has recently been linked to some health controversies, but fortunately these can be easily overcome. The potent vegetable in its raw form produces powerful compounds that both tinker with thyroid

hormone levels and compete with iodine for absorption by the thyroid gland, resulting in lower levels, and in extreme cases causing hypothyroidism. But you can still enjoy these luscious leaves. It’s a kale walk, and moderation and variety is the key, along with cooking the kale, which greatly reduces its thyroid-lowering properties. Also, eating the crucifer with iodine-rich foods, including wild caught shrimp or seaweed will help stabilize levels. Or you can dial up iodine by adding a dose of selenium by munching on a stalk of celery or a rich Brazil nut. There’s more. Since kale packs a load of Vitamin K, a blood-clotting mineral, those on blood thinners should eat with caution.

Beans and legumes are a hearty source of lean vegetarian protein, fiber and folate, immune-boosting antioxidants, along with iron, zinc, calcium and selenium for healthy blood and bones, and maintaining internal balance. But for many, eating beans is a real gas – literally. That’s because the mighty bean is a store of complex sugars (stachyose, raffinose and verbascose) that are indigestible by the human gut, since we don’t have the enzyme to break down these sugars. They then ferment in the colon and produce flatulence. Take solace, you can put the brakes on the gas by following these simple methods of preparation and cooking: rinse in cold water, soak overnight, drain well and cook for two hours with ginger and turmeric to make them more digestible; combine beans with a load of green vegetables and a whole grain; avoid spuds and multiple proteins as these will tamper with digestion of the beans; mash them well and remove skins, where possible.

Don’t Breathe It to a Soul

While garlic is a superfood that can practically cure anything that ails you from the flu to athlete’s foot, it can also cause

• 1/4 cup red wine vinegar • 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 1/4 cup almond, avocado or olive oil • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard powder • 1/4 cup roasted chopped pecans or walnuts ■ Method: Cook chickpeas following directions above, or if canned, rinse in cold water, remove skins, drain well. Sauté onion in oil until translucent. Add vinegar, lemon, honey, mustard, salt and pepper, and heat on medium. Add kale and heat until wilted. Toss with chickpeas, and sprinkle with nuts. Serve immediately. Serves 4. — For additional recipes, e-mail kitchenshrink@san.rr.com

halitosis. The stinky rose releases a compound called allyl methyl sulfide that is absorbed in the bloodstream, and stenches your sweat and breath. By eating certain choice fruits like apples, pears, peaches and cherries you can fend off garlic breath as these fruits oxidize.

offering more than 35 different classes and activities each week – ranging from art to Zumba – that stimulate both body and mind. EBC offers ballroom dance with Mel Carillo, as well as tappercize, line dancing, watercolor and Zumba. If you’re musically inclined, join the ukulele class, or sign up to learn guitar. Its fitness and yoga classes are especially popular, and we also offer tai chi, qigong and adaptive exercise classes. The public is invited to play bingo every Friday at 1 p.m. for only $12 per person. EBC members receive an extra card to play, which gives them more chances to win cash prizes. Also open to the public are free Readers Theater presentations every other month and Sunday Afternoons @ 3, a series of monthly concerts featuring a variety of entertainment including music, dance, comedy and theater — $10 for adults; $5 for children through age 12. Call the center at 858-487-9324 for more details, or go to edbrowncenter.org for dates and times.

BUSINESS Ask Mr. Marketing BY ROB WEINBERG

One-legged dancer teaches a lesson

I

n my business you read a lot. A full-page ad in the “Casino Journal” really caught my attention. Headlined “Showgirls,” the ad portrayed a slot machine with illustrations of five female Vegas entertainers strutting their stuff. Four of these women were shown wearing a splashy collection of feathers, headdresses, beads, sparkles, and pointy shoes. In the middle was a sexy blonde facing the audience with her black dress open from neck to toe. Her bedroom eyes and cleavage were designed to make gambling with that machine a desirable experience.

On a 10-inch slot screen, pressed closely between her associates, the blonde seemed to walk in a flowing outfit. However, the ad showed a 1-inch photo of the machine. These images thus needed to be expanded and separated to help readers appreciate their beauty. The woman in black suddenly appeared to lack one leg and two-thirds of her torso. Oops! On the casino floor our blonde friend offers the desired sultry impression. But in print the one-legged showgirl lacks credibility, encouraging viewers to keep moving.

Regular readers know the importance of having someone else proofread your work. Experience has taught me if I make the mistake when writing or designing, I’ll make similar errors during proofreading. Today it’s easy to “borrow” images of beautiful scenery. Inattentive editors can easily overlook dogs in the background doing nasty things. Photos or illustrations created for one environment don’t always work elsewhere. This ad was a case in point, with illustrations that obviously worked on the slot machine, but not in the ad selling these machines.

The problem could have easily been resolved by enlarging the images but still keeping them closely compressed. Paying for an additional image of the blonde to show her missing dress or body parts would have also worked. Whether you’re developing marketing materials in-house or hiring freelance talent, having an additional set of disinterested eyes looking for errors or omissions is a critical way to prevent your company from looking foolish. And remember: merely because I’m not in the market to purchase slot machines doesn’t mean I don’t have friends in that business. And this experience has me wondering about the quality controls of any company that would permit an ad like this to represent them. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. — See the offending illustration, then make your marketing dance at www.askmrmarketing.com.
