The new center, plus related upgrades to the nearby Poway Swim Center, are projected to cost in the neighborhood of $19.2 million, according to a report authored by Wendy Kaserman, the new director of administrative services. She is suggesting that roughly $10 million of the cost be financed through the sale of certificates of participation (bonds) with the balance - around $9.2 million, being paid out of the reserves. Using the certificate funding process, which does not require voter approval, will cost the city

between $565,000 and $707,000 per year, over 20-30 years, based on current market conditions, according to Kaserman. The proposed mission-styled, 36,000-square-foot center would replace the aging city Community Park structures, the community center and the senior center. Activities from both buildings will be combined into the new center, which will be positioned closer to the swim center so that the same city SEE RESERVES, A12

Members of the Poway Valley Garden Club celebrate the 38th annual Standard Flower Show, held on Saturday in Old Poway Park. Their spirits weren’t damped by the rain, said Co-Chair Emily Troxell. “The show went extremely well,” she said. “It seems to go better each year.” The event drew about 250 entries from both club members and the community. Troxell said the club was pleased by the community participation and hoped to see it continue at next year’s show. For more photos from the Standard Flower Show, see page B8.

Poway Health Center breaks ground BY EMILY SORENSEN Ground was broken on Tuesday at the long-anticipated Gold Family Health Center on Poway Road following years of fundraising. The health center will provide health care for about 7,500 low income people in Poway and the surrounding areas, regardless if they can pay. Currently, the closest health center is in Escondido, a two-and-a-half hour bus ride away.

The Eric Matz Team statistically outperforms other agents. They sell homes faster and for higher prices than the competition.

The health center will provide both medical care and mental health care, and will be a more cost-effective option for health care than visiting an emergency room when unable to afford a visit to a doctor. Though it is aimed at lower income citizens, anyone can visit the health center and utilize its services, said Tracy Ream, CEO of Neighborhood Healthcare. “When people hear about what great doctors we have, they SEE CENTER, A12

Poway resident Kami Anderson in the hospital, after a spinal injury from a car accident. She is now back home.

Poway family seeking $20,000 to help paralyzed woman BY EMILY SORENSEN The family of a Poway woman paralyzed after a car accident is looking to raise $20,000 for her care. Kami Anderson, who has lived in Poway for 20 years and cares for her two disabled adult daughters, broke her spine in a car accident two months ago, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Now, she and her family are hoping to raise funds to pay for a second spinal surgery, as well as to remodel Anderson’s house to better accommodate her wheelchair. Her GoFundMe account, at www.gofundme.com/9hxbfjks, had raised $1,025 in 11 days at press time. Anderson, who was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, was traveling to a doctor’s appointment when the accident occurred. “Kami was having a hard time walking, so she was using a wheelchair,” said Cindy Penning, Anderson’s sister. The wheelchair wasn’t properly secured, and after a turn, Anderson fell back and hit her spine. “She knew immediately. She said, ‘I can’t feel my legs,’” said Penning. Penning said that while Anderson has

some sensation in her legs, she cannot walk and was initially given a prognosis of a chance of under 5 percent that she would ever walk again. Anderson is waiting on test results for her second spinal surgery, which would help support the front of her spine, said Penning. Anderson spent a month in the hospital recovering from the accident and spinal surgery, then three weeks in a rehabilitation center before finally being able to come home. “She’s really happy to be home,” said Penning. “But she’d be more comfortable maneuvering around (if the house had some remodeling done to it). She’s scared she’ll fall. She’s trying to readjust to functioning with a wheelchair and mastering her new dynamic.” One of the biggest changes needed is to her kitchen, as the doorway is too narrow for her wheelchair to fit through. “Getting into that kitchen would be huge for her,” said Penning. “It would give her independence. She’s a strong woman used to taking care of herself, SEE FAMILY, A7

Bernardo Gardeners’ spring tour returns on April 23 Event to be held rain or shine BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Five gardens — four in Poway and one in Rancho Bernardo — will be showcased next weekend during Bernardo Gardeners Club’s annual spring tour. The self-guided tour will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23. It will be held rain or shine. Refreshments will be served at the Casterline garden. Gardens may be visited in any order, however, if purchasing tickets on tour day, they will only be available at the Slater garden, 12649 Bendito Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Organizers said if using Google Maps for guidance, the system identifies the street as Relindo Drive. At that location the addresses of the other gardens will be provided. Tickets are $20. To purchase in advance, send a check to Bernardo Gardeners Club, 17361 Regalo Lane, San Diego, CA 92128 (include return address) or until April 22 go to Walter Andersen Nursery, 12755 Danielson Court in Poway. The featured gardens are: • The Arnold garden is a combination of nature preserve and botanical garden on the 19-acre Poway hilltop property. Careful attention has been paid to the use of massive boulders, natural slopes and native plants. More than 15 acres of the property feature highly diverse, undisturbed coastal chaparral

It features a botanical garden with numerous palms, cycad, aloe, protea and bromeliad species, plus orchids, flowering trees, a koi pond and about 15 acres of undisturbed coastal chaparral. and numerous native species. In the property’s botanical garden there are hundreds of tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including more than 80 palm and 50 cycad species. There are also flowering trees, aloes, proteas, orchids, bromeliads, ferns and a koi pond.

• The Casterline garden in Poway has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens publications, Sunset, Garden Conservancy and was on the 2013 San Diego Horticulture Society Tour. The 1-acre lot includes native plants of Australia. • The Quate garden in Poway features a

sloping hillside with gardens cascading along gentle paths. The garden — established in 1998 — uses old oaks and new trees to accent its large shrubs, roses and other flowers. Near the house is a natural setting with riparian plants along a year-round creek. • The Seifert garden in Poway was recently renovated after the home there was remodeled to reflect the Cape style. Two years ago, the homeowner turned 4,000 square feet of the yard into drought-tolerant garden that has the front yard blooming all year due to its various plants. These were favored over a desert landscape. Many areas of the property are also used as “test” gardens. • The Slater garden in Rancho Bernardo features succulents and native plants around the home to enhance the corner lot property. There is also a drought-tolerant yard and a rose garden. Organizers said this is the club’s main fundraiser, with proceeds divided among several projects. They are educational scholarships for students pursuing a horticulture degree, garden therapy programs for seniors at local residential facilities, maintenance of the Rancho Bernardo Library’s garden and to provide fresh floral arrangements for its lobby each week, providing and planting a tree in the community each Arbor Day and to get plant experts to speak at club meetings. The club’s monthly gatherings alternate between speakers and field trips to local nurseries, botanical gardens and residential gardens. For details, go to bernardogardeners.org.

Dispute with parent costs PUSD hundreds of thousands BY MAUREEN MAGEE An ongoing dispute at a Poway elementary school over a parent activist has proven costly for the district, which has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in private security and legal fees in the case. Last year, a Superior Court judge granted the Poway Unified School District a restraining order against Chris Garnier, requiring the parent volunteer and former district employee to steer clear of Painted Rock Elementary and its principal for three years. The principal accused the parent of threatening her and others. Garnier denies the allegations and has appealed the restraining order. He accused the district targeting him over his efforts to address alleged racism and other problems in the district. When the principal transferred to another campus in October, the restraining order followed her and Poway Unified contracted with a private security firm to put an armed, plain-clothed guard at Painted Rock from Oct. 9 through Jan. 6, excluding holiday breaks and weekends. A security guard was also hired to attend at least one district event during that period. Poway Unified spent $52,208 on private security under contracts with the Bravo Three Security, and Jon J Security Services, according to records

The district has also spent at least $268,407 in legal fees associated with Garnier’s restraining order and a wrongful termination lawsuit he filed over losing his assistant coaching position at Rancho Bernardo High School. The security at Painted Rock was called off because of a lack of incidents once Garnier was allowed to return to the campus, where his son and daughter attend, Poway Unified officials said.

Genevieve Suzuki, an attorney representing Garnier, said the security was a waste of money. “This case is about a school district taking unnecessary actions — and unnecessarily spending taxpayer dollars — against a parent who has been asserting his rights,” said Suzuki, adding that the public was never made aware that an armed guard was allowed on campus. “There were no incidents because Chris Garnier is not a threat. They have portrayed him as this tall, angry black man.”

Superintendent John Collins declined to discuss the case, except to defend the district’s decision to secure the Painted Rock campus with a guard. “The security and safety of the PUSD students and staff is the number one priority of the school district,” Collins said in a prepared statement. Garnier is accused of making verbal threats against school employees and exhibiting menacing behavior, including pounding on car windows. He’s also accused of disrupting a community forum. Suzuki said her client has suffered retribution for criticizing the school. She said he volunteered at the campus for two years without problems until the now-former principal was hired. Part of the dispute with the district centers around Garnier’s election in 2014 to Painted Rock’s site council, a parent-teacher group that helps make decisions about campus programs and spending. The principal overturned the election, citing technical difficulties. Garnier lost in a second election, which required parents had to show a photo ID when they cast their ballots. Garnier has a wrongful termination lawsuit against the district pending over the loss of his coaching job in 2013, which the district claims Garnier quit voluntarily. He has also SEE DISPUTE, A22

Novice Del Norte High team qualifies for national contest BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK In their first competition, four Del Norte High juniors qualified for the national Academic WorldQuest competition occurring next week in Washington, D.C. Team captain Daniel Shevchuk; his twin brother, Gleb; along with Madison “Maddy” Malowney and Armaun Rouhi will be competing in the two-day event, next Friday and Saturday, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The global knowledge program for high school students is the World Affairs Councils of America’s flagship program that has more than 4,000 high school students competing on teams each year throughout the United States. It tests their knowledge of global issues and foreign policy. Daniel Shevchuk said they will be facing the 60 to 70 other teams that qualified for the national competition by winning regional contests. Del Norte won in February when it faced four other local teams, including San Diego’s champion team for the past three consecutive years. “When we first heard we won, it was like a drumroll moment,” he said. “It was amazing to hear our name called out.” Shevchuk said the judges told them that until the final round the top two teams were essentially tied, with a one- or two-point difference between them each time. As in the regional contest, the national competition will have 10 rounds of 10 questions each, a mix of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false and open-ended questions. The teams of four high school students have 45 seconds in which to answer the question, according to the contest’s website. Teams were given this year’s study guides, about 500 pages of materials to learn, back in September, Shevchuk said. Since then, the four juniors have been learning that material plus reading the CNN and Yahoo! news websites to learn about current events in addition to doing their regular homework. They mostly prepared as a team during the weekends. This year’s topics are current events, great decisions, NATO, Asia matters for America, international trade and finance, Sultanate of Oman, privacy in the digital age, the Arctic, food security and organization of American states, according to the competition website. Shevchuk said after he learned about the

Del Norte High juniors Maddy Malowney, Daniel Shevchuk, Armaun Rouhi and Gleb Shevchuk will compete in the national Academic WorldQuest competition next week in Washington, D.C. contest, he approached Del Norte officials about forming a team. He and his brother recruited Malowney and Rouhi, whom they knew through their classes, and got their Advanced Placement U.S. history teacher, Tom Swanson, to be their adviser. He said none of the team members are on Del Norte’s Quiz Bowl or Academic League teams, but were drawn to this competition because of its focus on international topics, which all are interested in studying in college. “I’m mostly interested in international relations,” Shevchuk said. “Armaun is into public health, Maddy into Chinese affairs and she speaks Mandarin fluently. There were some Mandarin words (in the regional) so we had a complete advantage. My brother is focused on international affairs and economics.” The team is trying to raise $3,000 to cover their expenses associated with the national competition. They raised $1,500 by contacting local businesses and non-profits. Of that, $500 came from Del Norte High School Foundation and $250 from the San Diego World Affairs Council. They set up a donation website at gofundme.com/vrvk6aps, which only reflects online donations. Contributions will offset the amount each student has to pay. Any money raised beyond $3,000 will be saved for next year. Shevchuk said their goal is to establish an Academic WorldQuest program at Del Norte that will continue after they graduate. He said they would like to take two or three teams to the regional contest next year.

BY STEVE DREYER Efforts to raise enough private donations to finance a memorial for Tony Gwynn at Lake Poway topped $100,000 this week. As of Tuesday morning, $102,948 had been raised through the campaign’s website, crowdrise.com/tonygwynn. Poway Mayor Steve Vaus expressed confidence that “We will raise $150,000-plus” within the next few weeks — enough to pay for a larger-than-life bronze statue of the San Diego Padres legend and 30-year Poway resident who died nearly two years ago. On Tuesday night the City Council will review a statue design recommended by a selection committee. The design, by Texas sculptor Seth Vandable, shows Gwynn raising his cap to the crowd while holding his young daughter.

A model of artist Seth Vandable's vision for a memorial to Tony Gwynn. If the design is approved, the statue should be ready in about eight months, Vaus said Tuesday. It will be installed, along with a donor wall and perhaps some benches, on a site

near the snack stand at the Lake Poway baseball field. The exact design of the memorial is still being worked out. An April 1 concert at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts generated about $20,000 for the memorial. Corporate sponsorships to date include $25,000 from Alex Pellegrino of Sequoian Investments and $5,000 each from El Cajon Ford, Walmart, Bill Howe Plumbing and Whitaker Investments. Donor wall tiles are available for contributions of $250 or more. Donations may be made online. Checks made out to the City of Poway can be mailed to City of Poway, Attn: Tony Gwynn Memorial, 13325 Civic Center Drive, Poway, CA 92064. More information is available from Community Services Director Robin Bettin at 858-668-4585. Her e-mail is rbettin@poway.org.

want to come regardless,” said Ream. Construction is scheduled to begin by mid-June and will be completed by the end of the year, said Ream. Though the nonprofit organization has not quite reached its $3 million goal, Ream said they were close enough that they could begin construction and said she knew they could raise the rest in time. Discussion about opening a health center in Poway began over 10 years ago, said Ream. The lot on Poway Road, which was formerly a Wendy’s restaurant, was purchased by the nonprofit for $1.2 million in 2010, with the help of Alan and Debbie Gold, for whom the health center is named. The Golds donated $500,000 to the project as a match for funds raised. The center’s name will honor Alan Gold’s parents, Martin and Delia Gold, who lived in Poway for more than 50 years. “I’m truly very excited (about the ground breaking),” said Alan Gold. “I couldn’t be any prouder. I wish my parents were here to see it, and see their children give back to their community.” Gold’s parents died in 2004 and 2008. Ream said that her only regret about the project was that they didn’t get it done sooner so Martin and Delia Gold could have seen it. “But what a great way to remember and honor them,” said Ream. Several members of the Gold family were on hand to witness the ground breaking ceremony, as well as representatives from Palomar Health, State Senator Joel Anderson’s office and members of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, who presented Neighborhood Healthcare with a $1,000 check of funds earned from the chamber’s Mickey Cafagna Golf Memorial Classic earlier this year. City councilman Dave Grosch was also at the ground breaking. Grosch said during a short speech at the ceremony that he had been involved with the project for about five years, and that despite what people might think about Poway, about 10 percent of its population lives below the poverty line. “After five long years it’s great to be here, and the City of Poway is happy that you’re here,” said Grosch.

staff can oversee both facilities. Last summer the council decided that the general fund reserves should equal about 45 percent of annual operating expenditures. To do that will require keeping about $18 million in the fund. At the time of the 45-percent decision, the city general fund reserves stood at $33 million, or about 82 percent of annual operating costs. It had been built up over the city’s 35-year history. The council later devoted a workshop session to discussing possible ways to spend the funds and ranked preferred options.

FROM INDUCTEES, A1 Zayas, who graduated from Poway High School in 1980, is an artist best known for his paintings and sculptures. Raised in Mazatlan, Mexico, he moved to Poway as a teenager and, after graduating from Poway High, attended San Diego’s United States International University, where he was awarded a Robert Kanyon Memorial scholarship to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1986. He taught at Loyola Marymount University between 1987 and 1993. In 2005 Zayas created the Maestro’s Fine Arts Program at Loyola Marymount, underwritten by the Irvine Foundation. He also founded the Dwight Harmon Memorial

The new community center was at the top off everyone’s list. The new staff report suggests possibly allocating all but $710,000 of the available general fund reserves. Expenditures recommended for inclusion in next year’s budget include $2.8 million to pay down on the underfunding of an employee pension plan, $2.6 million to extend the undergrounding of utility lines along Espola Road, $2.1 million to purchase a new vehicle storage lot in the business park from the defunct redevelopment agency and $50,000 to upgrade the Iron Mountain Trail. The report suggests that reserve money for the following projects be

set aside now for possible use later: $3.5 million for energy conservation projects on city buildings; $1.1 million for improvements to the Poway Road corridor and $750,000 as a possible contribution to sports field renovations at Tierra Buena Elementary and Twin Peaks Middle schools. The council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers on Civic Center Drive. Other agenda items include review of a proposed design for a memorial to Tony Gwynn (see story, Page A7), an update on the current budget and award of a contract for drought-tolerant landscaping around the library.

Zayas is known for his landscapes and cityscapes, as well as still life and figural subjects that meditate between realism and expressionism, according to a press release from the alumni association. Wynne is a Poway native and a 2004 Poway High graduate who is known for his professional soccer career. Wynne, who has played soccer since he was 6, played on the school’s team and in college was a first team All-American at UCLA and the first player chosen in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft in 2006.

A defender known for his prolific speed, Wynne has played in the MLS for 11 years with the New York Red Bulls; Toronto FC, where he won a Canadian Championship in 2009; and Colorado Rapids, where he helped the team win the MLS Cup 2010, according to a press release from the alumni association. He currently is a starting defender for the San Jose Earthquakes. Wynne has represented the United States in international competitions, playing for the U-20 team in the World Youth Championships. He was a starter on the U-23 team that represented the US at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and he helped the United States qualify for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa as a member of the US Men’s National Team.

PHS Robotics team wins big in Idaho

BEST OF SHOW The Poway Chamber of Commerce’s Springfest Family Fesitival on April 3 included 23 cars on display at the Madame Mechanic Classic Car Show. Spectators were asked to cast ballots for their favorite entry. The winner was this 1960 Chevrolet Corvette owned by Sharon and Gary Wood. The car show was sponsored by Poway Transmissions.

BY EMILY SORENSEN The Poway High School Robotics team (Team Spyder 1622) came home from the Idaho Regional competition with heads held high after winning the highest award and securing a spot in the International Worldwide Championship FIRST Robotics Competition in St. Louis later this month. Team Spyder received the Chairman’s Award, which is the top award at the regional event, said Rodger Dohm, the head coach of the robotics team. There were 30 teams competing at the Idaho regional. The Chairman’s Award honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of the FIRST robotics competition. It is a special accomplishment for Team Spyder because it took five years to win as an entire team accomplishment, said Dohm. The award encompasses everything to industrial design to engineering and fabrication, entrepreneurship, mentorship, STEM outreach, public speaking, professional writing and community outreach. This was the first time Team Spyder won the Chairman’s Award at a regional competition. The team also took home the Imagery Award, which is given in honor of Jack Kamen, a prolific EC comics artist who drew crime, horror, humor, suspense and science fictions stories, including the comic “Tales from the Crypt.” This award is based on attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration of machine and team appearance. This is the fourth time Team Spyder has won the Imagery Award at a regional event. The team won for its branding its image into all aspects of the team, creating a professional business and marketing standard for other teams to follow, according to a press release from Team Spyder. Team Spyder was also awarded for its safety, winning the Underwriters Laboratories Industrial Safety Award for the 15th time since 2005. This award is given to teams that consistently demonstrates excellence in industrial safety performance throughout the competition. One member of Team Spyder, Carly Custodio, was awarded the Safety Star of the Day award at the competition.

The Savvy Senior BY JIM MILLER

Auto insurance discounts for seniors benefits can reduce your overall premium by 15 to 20 percent or more, and you are usually allowed to combine discounts to increase your savings, though total discounts are often capped at around 25 percent. To find out what discounts may be available to you, contact your auto insurer and inquire about these benefits, and any others that may benefit you. • Age discount: Many auto insurance companies offer a general “senior” discount that will reduce your premium just because you’ve reached a specific age. The actual name and amount of the discount will vary by insurer. Allstate, for example,

provides a “senior adult discount” of up to 10 percent to drivers who are at least 55 years old and aren’t actively looking for full-time work. And Liberty Mutual offers a “newly retired discount” to drivers who reach that employment milestone, regardless of age. • Low mileage discount: Most insurers offer discounts to customers who drive limited miles each year, which is often beneficial to retirees who drive less because they don’t commute to work every day. The fewer miles you drive, the lower your odds of getting into an accident. The parameters of low mileage differ by insurer, but generally about a 10

ear Savvy Senior, I’ve read that many car insurance companies offer a variety of discounts to older drivers when they retire or reach a certain age. What can you tell me about this? Discount Seeker Dear Seeker, Most auto insurance companies offer policyholders a wide variety of discounts, many of which can benefit retirees. Auto insurers love older drivers because they’re experienced behind the wheel and they drive less than younger age groups, which makes them a lower risk for accidents and a safer bet for insurance companies. While discounts will vary by insurer, many of these

percent discount is available for driving less than 5,000 to 8,000 miles each year, although smaller discounts may also be available to seniors who drive more than this but less than 15,000. • Drivers Ed discount: Many states require insurance companies to offer “defensive-driving” discounts to drivers who take a refresher course to brush up on their safety skills. The discounts vary usually ranging between 5 and 15 percent. Driver safety courses are inexpensive, usually costing around $20 to $30 and can often be taken in a classroom or online. To locate a class contact your local AAA (aaa.com), which operates a Driver Improvement Course for seniors, or AARP (aarp.org/driversafety, 888-227-7669), which offers the Smart Driver Course to members and non-members. • Club member discount: Insurers offer discounts to members of clubs and associations with which they have partnered. These could include professional associations, workers’

unions, large employers or membership organizations such as AAA, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, the Seniors Coalition, AARP, etc. You could even qualify for savings based on the college you attended or the fraternity or sorority you belonged to decades ago. • Safe driving discount: Many insurance providers now offer discounts based on how and when you use your car. To do this, they would place a diagnostic device in your car that transmits wireless data on how you drive (including how fast you’re going and how hard you’re braking), when you drive and how much you drive. Drivers are rewarded for safe driving, low mileage and for not driving late at night. In addition, many insurance providers also offer discounts to drivers who do not have any violations or accidents for three or more years. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Miller is not compensated for endorsing products and services.

Faith & Family Night at Petco Park benefits recovery homes Members of several churches from Ramona and Poway will be going to the San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets game as part of Faith and Family Night at Petco Park on Saturday, May 7. The Padres put together the Faith and Family Night package that, in addition to the baseball game against the Mets at 5:40 pm., will include a post-game question-and-answer faith testimony with Padres players and a post-game concert featuring Christian singer Lincoln Brewster. “An added bonus this year is all in attendance will receive a brown hooded sweatshirt,” noted Jim Tate, Ramona resident helping to coordinate the fundraising event. The North County Faith & Family 4 Fun group based out of Ramona added some items and made it a fundraiser for In His Steps Drug and Alcohol Abstinence Program in

Ramona. The $25 ticket includes the Padres Game, Padres Player Testimony, Lincoln Brewster concert, hooded sweatshirt, and a white event T-shirt with information on game, concert sponsors, participating churches and In His Steps Christian Recovery Homes. Each $25 game ticket will also include an opportunity drawing ticket for prizes. Two years ago the Faith and Family 4 Fun Group numbered 330 people mostly from Mountain View Community Church and Christian Family Schools of Ramona and Poway. Last year the total was 850 people from at least 10 churches and groups involved. Each group raised funds for selling the tickets and also for In His Steps, said Tate. This year congregations from Ramona and Poway will participate. From Ramona will be Mountain View Community

From Poway will be St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Living Way Church and Christian Family School of Poway. Tickets are available from the participating churches and groups or by contacting Tate at 760-445-5650 or jimtate@jgtate.com. Faith And Family 4 Fun is looking for sponsors to underwrite the cost of the shirts and providing tickets to In His Steps clients, said Tate. “We are also looking for churches who want to earn a portion of the proceeds for their nonprofit organization by selling tickets and having a group go and join in the ‘Fun,’” he said. Interested sponsors and churches may contact Tate.

Bumpy road ahead for sales tax hike

S

ince 1988 San Diego County residents have been paying an extra one-half cent on the sales tax which has been used for transportation system improvements. The so-called “TransNet” tax was extended by voters in 2004 for another 40 years, funding new freeways, major surface streets, bike paths and pedestrian walkways. Together, the taxes are expected to generate $17 billion over 60 years. Our region has benefited with the completion of Highway 56, HOV lanes down Interstate 15, speedy commuter buses and transit stations in Rancho Bernardo and Sabre Springs. Now the same agency that administered TransNet is contemplating asking voters for another half-cent hike in the sales tax rate in November. If approved, the tax increase would generate $18 billion for public transit, highways and local infrastructure work. However, unlike the current project, there’s not much for inland North County voters to get excited about. The plan currently calls for only 14 percent of the new revenue to go to freeway projects, and none of the work would be in our region. Another 26 percent would pay for local road repairs while the remainder, a whopping 60 percent, would be spent on public transit, management of open space and complying with state water quality measures. Public transit is a great idea in high-density communities. Here in inland North County, not so much. Don’t ever count on seeing a red trolly rolling along I-15 from Scripps Ranch to Escondido. It’s way too expensive to build. The SANDAG board, comprised of elected officials from the county’s 18 cities, last week heard the results of survey on the prospective ballot measure. The news was not good. While 68 percent of the 1,200 respondents surveyed said they were inclined at first blush to vote for the measure (66 percent would be needed for passage), support dropped to 62 percent when the respondents were given arguments for and against the plan. Directors also heard from labor and environmental group representatives who said they would oppose the measure because they believe proposed road and freeway enhancements would worsen climate change. So directors face a challenge. To avoid strong organized opposition to a sales tax hike, road improvements need to be downplayed. However, to gain the support of voters outside the San Diego metropolitan area, the repair and upgrading of roads and freeways needs to be a significant component. Call it a tussle between the city folks and the country folks. It will be interesting to watch.

OUR READERS WRITE Westwood traffic woes As I stood pumping gas at the Chevron on West Bernardo Drive early on April 4, I contemplated the horrific traffic forcing its way through the intersection with Rancho Bernardo Road. I was alerted by the wail of the sirens on an emergency vehicle. I saw a fire truck struggling up Rancho Bernardo Drive in the turning lane, needing to turn south onto West Bernardo Road. Three vehicles could, or would not, get out of the way. The fire truck could not move for several minutes. I thought of the people waiting for assistance, in a fire, car accident, or having a heart attack, and how every minute counted. Later in the day, I learned there had been a fire at that time in a condominium complex on Los Lobos. A cat and dog died and a woman was overcome trying to save them, while her husband was trying to save her. She was taken to the hospital. Thankfully, her life was spared. Estimated damage: $500,000. Every day the traffic in Westwood gets worse. City construction workers block off lanes, park trucks and cars along West Bernardo, and leave the barriers when they go home for the weekend. Are they widening the road to assist in the traffic jam? No. And now, Palomar College will add 2,000 to 3,000 students per day. Nancy Canfield Rancho Bernardo

Direct vote only The developers og the United States Constitution consisted of the leaders of the original 13 states. They created one of the greatest documents of its time but there was one consideration, that the people were not yet equipped to select a president, so they created the electoral college system (Art II, Sec 1) to elect the

president. Today the majority understands. The vote of the people, not the college delegates, should elect the president. The electoral college delegate, for many reasons, including corruption, certainly does not represent the vote of the people. Is it not the time, if not past time, to amend the Constitution to do away with the electoral college and rely solely on the popular vote of the people as it is for all of our other elected officials? It is too late for the 2016 election but “we the people” can demand the parties (Democrat, Republican, independent) to instruct their electors (delegates) by rule to vote solely in accordance with the popular vote. Double standard on assertiveness

L

ast year, I won a fellowship to produce a podcast, “Finding Rebecca.” As part of the project, I set out to find a child my parents adopted at birth and then relinquished six weeks later when they learned she was biracial, not Caucasian, as they’d been told. With only a faded snapshot, and a probable birth month to go on, I went in search of Rebecca. The executive producer of the project felt the chances of actually finding Rebecca were remote. Nevertheless, the journey of discovery could be told in a suspenseful manner that would keep listeners tuned in. The executive producer had underestimated my research skills. Despite my father and brothers refusing to speak to me about the Pandora’s box that was Rebecca’s short time with our family, I’d found promising leads within a month of setting out. What had started as a modest local radio program was now attracting the attention of national media outlets. Then, against all odds, and expert predictions, I found Rebecca during a research expedition to Chicago. Everything had gone right, or so it seemed. Personally and

professionally, I was flying high. The only hitch was that I didn’t get along with a co-worker. He disappointed me on several fronts, with dishonesty and unprofessionalism. During a particularly tense production meeting only a week after miraculously locating Rebecca, I confronted him on his bad behavior, and I asked him in front of the executive producer how I could possibly continue to work with him if I couldn’t trust him. I was blunt and forceful and expected answers. Then a few short days later, with no warning, the station pulled the plug on the podcast. When I asked the executive producer “Why?” he refused to explain except to say he thought I was “Too close to the story.” As a society we value assertive men, they’re viewed as powerful and confident. But we find assertive women to be scary, threatening or abrasive. A woman’s assertiveness will get her in trouble, as it did me. Our assertiveness won’t be the reason we’re given when we’re fired or passed over for a promotion because that’s not politically correct or even legal in many instances. But the double standard will

often be there just the same. Which brings me to Hillary Clinton. You see, I’m a Bernie Sanders supporter. And a few of my fellow political junkies of the female persuasion have been breaking my crayons about this. It could only be sexism that explains any liberal’s opposition to quite possibly the most qualified person to run for president in my lifetime. I tell my friends that it’s patently absurd to accuse me — a lifetime feminist — of rejecting Hillary based on her gender. I insist that the reasons I don’t support her are because I agree with the Democratic Socialist principles espoused by Bernie; because of how entrenched Hillary is in the current failing system; and because Hillary, pre-Bernie, was as conservative as my former boss, U.S. Senator Charles Percy, who was an original member of the moderate wing of the Republican Party, known as “Rockefeller Republicans.” It’s a convincing narrative. Still…I check myself, for instance when I find myself recoiling from a Hillary speech, just to make sure that the reason I’m recoiling has to with the content of what she’s proposing and not because she’s a woman with the drive, ego and, yes, chutzpah, to run for president, all things that are expected and accepted of a man running for president. Clearly, no one — man or woman — can be elected president without a preternatural amount of confidence and ambition. And for a woman, be it Hillary or the next woman who runs for president, to do what no woman before her has ever done, it will take ambition that may make some shudder. And, you know what? That’s okay, because who wouldn’t want the first woman leading the free world to be able to make our enemies shudder?

How to choose between Urgent Care or the Emergency – what you need to know. Health Care options are changing – a lot. Those who may not visit a physician routinely may not have had the opportunity, or the need, to identify a primary physician. So what are your options if something should come up unexpectedly? Something to consider is your local Urgent Care office.

When is Urgent Care the better choice? For conditions that need medical

attention but are not life-threatening, Urgent Care clinics provide quality health care without an appointment – this is especially important after normal business hours, on a weekend, or when your regular provider is unavailable to see you right away. Dr. Todd Wells, an Urgent Care provider at Arch Health Partners in Poway, explains that the majority of patients who start with the ER could have received complete, appropriate care at the Urgent Care office. He states that “The primary reason patients do visit Urgent Care is the convenience of it – we’re all about convenience. We’re here when you can’t see your primary physician due to scheduling or just want peace of mind in seeing a doctor right away.” Also of benefit, Urgent Care provides service to those who may not have an established health insurance plan or prefer to make cash or credit card payments in full at the time they receive service. This is a great advantage when you consider that the national average

cost to visit an Emergency Room can be several times higher than the price of a visit to Urgent Care. Also, it’s a good idea keep a copy of all your current medications (prescription and nonprescription) with you; this is a valuable resource for the physician on duty to provide you with the best treatment. A quick call or visit to your local Urgent Care Clinic’s website will allow you to quickly determine if your insurance plan covers the facility you choose. Consider Urgent Care for conditions such as abdominal pain, asthma attack, bloody nose, broken bone, colds and flu, cuts and lacerations, ear ache, insect or animal bites and stings, rashes, sore throat, sprains and sports injuries, urinary infection, or work-related injuries. Most locations are staffed by an Urgent Care Physician and Nurse.

When should patients choose the Emergency Room? In general, an emergency is a sudden, serious and unexpected illness, injury,

or condition which may result in permanent injury or loss of life if not treated immediately. If you experience any of the following serious issues, get help right away: complex bone fractures, head injuries and loss of consciousness, severe allergic reactions, sudden bleeding or loss of vision, fevers over 104 degrees, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Arch Health Partners Urgent Care physicians Dr. Todd Wells and Dr. Lionel Xavier caution that if a patient experiences symptoms of potentially serious conditions such as heart attack or stroke, it’s best to choose the emergency room to avoid any delay in getting the most appropriate, timely care. In case of an emergency, always dial 911. Arch Health Partners Urgent Care locations are available in Poway at 15611 Pomerado Road, 3rd Floor, Poway and at 211 13th Street in Ramona. And you’ll also get your lollipop when you leave. To learn more, visit www.ArchHealth.org/ UrgentCare.

worked as a contract (non-tenured) teacher for the district. Jack Sleeth, an attorney representing the district in the Garnier case with the San Diego firm of Stutz Atriano Shinoff & Holtz, said a trial date has been set for September in the wrongful termination case. He declined further comment. As Garnier’s legal cases wind their way through the court system, animosity over the matters have become fodder for angry exchanges during recent school board meetings. Magee is a staff writer for the San Diego Union Tribune. Editor’s note: Following publication of this story in the Sunday Union-Tribune,

district spokeswoman Christine Paik issued the following statement: “This is neither about retribution nor race. Ensuring the safety and security of our students, their families, and our staff is never a waste of money, as Ms. Suzuki claims. The verbal threats and menacing behavior created a level of fear at Painted Rock that reached a point where parents and staff demanded protection. A judge agreed, granting a 3-year restraining order. And the superintendent also acted to ensure their safety and a positive learning environment. Obviously the district wants to focus all of its resources on educating our students, but you just can’t put a price on our students’ and staff’s safety. You cannot learn and teach when you’re afraid.”

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Cruse leaving lasting mark on diamond at DNHS

COURTESY PHOTO

Haley Cruse is a .455 career hitter at Del Norte.

BY TERRY MONAHAN Haley Cruse remembers the day her softball career started. Then just 3, Haley was on the sidelines at her sister Dana’s softball game when the team’s catcher failed to show up. Haley stepped in and bailed out Dana, who is three years older, by donning the catcher’s gear and filling in. Of course, the gear was way too big. “I remember turning to my dad and saying, ‘I’m in the game,’’’ she said. “I was not a big kid back then and the gear didn’t fit.’’ But it might have been the best day of Cruse’s life. Now 5-foot-7 and a senior at Del Norte, Cruse has become one of the county’s best players, maybe the best player no one outside the Nighthawks’ community knows about. Her worst season was last year when she batted just .436. A .455 career hitter at Del Norte, Cruse has seven home runs and 67 RBIs while blasting 152 base hits. Cruse has been a first-team all-leaguer all three seasons. “It seems like she gets two hits no matter who is pitching,’’ Del Norte coach Steve Kuptz. “Her stats have been built against the better pitchers. “She has a high softball I.Q. That’s something you really can’t teach. The player has to have a gift for that. “I coached Laura Winters and Melissa May at Rancho Bernardo and Kaitlin Manuel at Del Norte and Haley is in that conversation with those three.’’

Next year, Cruse heads off to Oregon to continue her career. At one point, she used to be more of a dancer than a softball player until freshman year when she had to give it up to join a travel team, the OC Batbusters. “Dance used to be my outlet,’’ said Cruse, who now plays for the Corona Angels. “I used to take my grandma to musicals all the time. “I still watch some friends do dance, but I miss it. It was worth the sacrifice.’’ Trying to decide which position is her best one is hard to do. She’s become very proficient at all nine spots. These days she’s playing first base while a torn labrum heals. At Oregon, she will head to the outfield. “I have speed and I get to use it out there,’’ Cruse said. SEE CRUSE, B4

PREP BOYS LACROSSE

Titans’ Burke building a lacrosse hotbed in North County BY MICHAEL BOWER Zack Burke recently was in the Poway High gymnasium when he took a minute to admire the CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship banner the boys lacrosse program produced last season. “Hey, we made it in the gym,” he thought. Then he turned around and his eye caught the plethora of section championship banners the powerhouse wrestling program has amassed over the last 40-plus years under the leadership of legendary coach Wayne Branstetter. “I was in awe,” said Burke, who is in his fourth season as coach of the Titans. “They won the title almost every year from 1976 and on. I think they missed one year, but that year they were state champs.”

Yes, there is a long, long way to go before the lacrosse program can even enter the same universe of accomplishment the Poway wrestling program has been camping in for what seems like forever now. While Burke would love to live in that realm one day, he has other aspirations. Ones that go beyond high school and involve the sport of lacrosse rising to the top in Southern California. “When I came here, my goal was to make lacrosse important,” said Burke, who moved to the area from Baltimore, the nation’s mecca of lacrosse. “My plan is for Poway to be my last high school coaching job. I really want to start a college program here in Southern California. I can go and recruit. I know every hot spot in North America with

Canada included.” But Burke may not have to go very far to find stars due to what he is doing here. His job outside of coaching at Poway High is as the director of Southern California for 3D Lacrosse. He has helped boost feeder programs in the Poway, 4S Ranch and San Marcos areas. It is a huge reason for the Titans’ success and Burke expects Del Norte and San Marcos to reap the benefits soon. “I was the head coach at a private school in Baltimore and we didn’t have feeder programs,” Burke said. “I couldn’t get my hands on kids until they got to my school, so when I moved to California I thought I would do it backwards. From the youth up.” Several players on the SEE LACROSSE, B4

PREP GIRLS DIVING

RB High’s Doi continues to raise the bar

PHOTOS BY DON BOOMER

Rancho Bernardo diver Carly Doi says being short is an advantage on the 1-meter board.

A NEW YEAR,

BY GLAE THIEN The 4-foot-11 freshman who broke the San Diego Section girls diving record for Rancho Bernardo High three years ago keeps reaching new heights. It doesn’t matter that current senior Carly Doi isn’t even an inch taller than when she made her Broncos debut. Not waiting for postseason competition this year, Doi set a new personal best on March 17 with score of 291.70 points for the section’s third best mark all-time for six dives. And that’s not the only reason that she’s taking extra delight in her farewell season of prep diving. “I just feel way more relaxed this year,” said Doi, who is heading to Georgia Tech for college competition. “The other years, I felt like there was a lot of pressure to do well. Granted, that’s still there, but I just feel like I’ve accomplished so much already.” Her growth has come on the mental side of the sport. “The way Carly’s improved the most the last four years is her communication, her willingness and ability to accept criticism and apply correction,” Rancho Bernardo swim coach Tim Oelgoetz said. “She’s always been a good diver, but as she matured, she’s become more of an elite diver.” As for her height, Doi stands proudly, whether it be on the 1-meter board for prep

Rancho Bernardo high school diver Carly Doi is one of the top divers in the region. competition or the 3-meter or platform for major junior events. “I think it’s cool to be short, doing a sport that I like and do well,” Doi said. “It’s an advantage to be short with the 1-meter. You only have 1-meter to fall, so if you’re smaller, you can get around faster. The only downside is that taller people tend to get more height.” Doi initially competed in gymnastics as a youth, but she experienced periodic injuries over five years, culminating with torn hip cartilage. So she turned to diving more than a year ahead of high school. Into her first section meet, Doi didn’t even know the record (262.15) set the

previous year by Escondido Charter’s Taylor Pamplin. Nonetheless, while uncertain that she could win, Doi (269.05) surpassed it. “I had a really great meet,” Doi said. “I was super nervous, but it was like, ‘Hey, I’m a freshman, It doesn’t matter what I do. Nobody knows me.’ Then, when I set the record, I couldn’t believe it.” Pamplin, currently at Ohio State, subsequently regained the record the next year and broke it again last season (317.20). All this added to an upswing in girls diving ignited by Rancho Bernardo’s Haley Francois, a four-time section champion (2008-11) and former record holder (261.35). Whether the mark will fall again this year isn’t a top concern for Doi, though. “I just focus on myself,” Doi said. “I just want to do my best and be consistent, and if I break a record, that’s like, ‘That’s cool.’ ” New to her repertoire this year are the front 2½ somersault pike and back 1½ somersault in preparation for college. Still, she takes the same old approach on the board. “I’m kind of being a cheerleader for myself, pumping myself up,” Doi said. “It’s like, ‘You’re going to dive. You’ve done it a million times. They were all good. Focus and then just do it like you normally do it.’ ” While still growing as a diver. Thien is a freelance writer.

Poway Polo going strong

FROM CRUSE, B1 “The game is really quick on the infield.’’ As a freshman, Cruse was the Nighthawks’ varsity team with sister Dana. Dana would start games and Haley would relieve. “We get along better at home because I would come into a game for her and a lot of those inherited runners would score,’’ Cruse said. “She got a little upset because those runs counted against her ERA. “Her ERA that year was higher than mine. We wouldn’t make eye contact and I knew I’d be walking home that day.’’ Not only is Haley trying to finish senior year with a big flourish, she is also trying to learn something new ---- cooking meals and doing laundry ---- before she checks into her apartment at Oregon. “I’m getting lessons from my mom (Karen) now,’’ she said, sheepishly. “Dad washed my Red Sox uniform one time and turned the jersey pink. I had to wear it that way.’’ Monahan is a freelance writer.

The

FROM LACROSSE, B1 Poway lacrosse team started working with Burke and 3D Lacrosse before their freshman year. Burke also had a huge helping hand from Scott O’Donnell, the former Poway lacrosse coach who coaches youth lacrosse in the area. The result has been a handful of players earning college scholarships and the entire area quickly becoming known for its talented lacrosse athletes. Poway will send off at least five players to colleges next year and likely more. “3D Lacrosse brings it all together,” Burke said. “We have the curriculum to teach other coaches how to coach. We have every drill for every age on a video … We kind of grow lacrosse players.” Burke might be staying put at Poway for at least a little while longer. There are very few

college lacrosse programs in Southern California. Whittier College is one of the most popular destinations for lacrosse stars in the area who want to stay local. Cal State San Marcos has a club team. Burke hopes colleges will begin to start programs soon, especially because the talent is there for the taking. “We are building a hot bed in Poway, San Marcos and Carlsbad,” he said. “If you just got the secondary players, you would have an instant line of studs here.” Burke doesn’t mind waiting for the right opportunity. And in the meantime, the Titans are becoming one of the top programs in all of California. Poway entered this week with a 9-1 record and ranked No. 4 in the state and No. 12 in the nation by MaxPreps. The Titans will face St. Ignatius in San

The Poway Polo Club's varsity team recently played in the United States Polo Association's 2016 National Interscholastic Tournament held in Houston, Texas. The Poway team, comprised of Molly Agee, Andrew Scott, Garrett Bankhead and Skyler Dale proved to be one of the top six youth arena polo teams in the United States. The team was coached by professional polo player and Poway resident Billy Sheldon. Poway lost its first game, but rebounded for a win in its second match. Three players are Juniors and one is a Sophomore, so Poway should be stronger in 2017. Francisco on Friday at 3 p.m. in what is considered a huge matchup. The Wildcats are ranked No. 8 in the state. “Inside Lacrosse has us ranked in the top 10 on the west, which is huge,” Burke said. “If we beat St. Ignatius, we are going to be on the national stage. I think we would get a little love from USA Today.” And it would be another reason for people to take notice of lacrosse on the west coast, Burke’s No. 1 goal since the day he moved here. “I know the plan that I have and at this point it is going in the right direction,” he said. “We just have to keep plugging away, one day and one month at a time. Just keeping bringing attention to lacrosse out here on the west coast. Just another step in the master plan to get lacrosse to be a big-time sport here in Southern California.”

‘Noises Off’ looks behind the scenes for laughs BY EMILY SORENSEN Enjoy laughs both on and off stage in the comedy “Noises Off,” opening Friday, April 29 and running through Sunday, May 15 at the Lawrence Welk Theater, 8860 Lawrence Welk Drive in Escondido. Shows are Thursdays through Sundays and tickets are $35. For tickets, call 1-888-802-7469 or visit www.welktheatersandiego.com. “Noises Off” is being put on by Broadway Vista, is directed by Ray Limon and produced by Randall Hickman, who is also playing a role in the show. Written by British playwright Michael Frayn in 1982, “Noises Off” is considered one of the top 25 plays of all time, according to Hickman. “It’s really funny, and one of the hardest shows I’ve ever done,” he said. “There are scenes when I was in tears of laughter. I’m really thrilled to be part of it.” Hickman performed in the another production of “Noises Off” about 16 years ago at Moonlight Amphitheatre, where he played the same role. “This is my second go round with this play and it is still one of the wildest, most fast-paced, shows an actor will ever do. It starts off at warp-speed and doesn’t let up until the curtain goes down,” said Hickman in a press release. “Noises Off” plays out in three acts, each portraying the same show in three different ways. Act One is set in the dress rehearsal for “Nothing’s On,” a fictional show being put on by a theatre company. The cast is unprepared, missing their entrances and exits, cues, lines and

even props. In Act Two, the entire stage rotates and the audience gets to see backstage during a matinee performance of “Nothing’s On,” where deteriorating relationships lead to insanity off and on stage. The final act jumps ahead several months, when everyone is “so done” with the show, said Hickman, and everyone hates each other. The show’s complex set-up and convoluted dialogue can be a challenge for actors. “This is a show you need really experienced actors for,” said Hickman. The cast includes Hickman as Llyod Dallas, Robin LaValley as Dotty Otley, Michael Kelly as Gary Lejeune, Lindsey Denham as Brooke Ashton, Michelle Trester as Poppy Norton-Taylor, Paul Morgavo as Frederick Fellows, Brannon Shaw as Belinda Blair, Julian Diaz as Tim Allgood and Ralph Johnson as Selsdon Mowbray. This is Broadway Vista’s third show hosted at the Welk. The previous shows, “The Odd Couple” and “The 39 Steps,” were both huge successes, said Hickman. “It’s a unique thing to do plays over there,” said Hickman. “It gives the guests a choice of seeing a musical or a play.” Broadway Vista will be doing two shows a year at the Welk, with their second, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” opening in August. Hickman is predicting similar success for “Noises Off.” “There’s no way people won’t like this show,” he said. “I remember (performing the show 16 years ago), there was a moment we had to hold for a solid minute because of laughter.”

Full-fledged bar

Anyone who has hosted a party outdoors knows that one of the biggest challenges for keeping guests happy is keeping drinks refilled. While a cooler suffices for chilling beverages, a fully-stocked bar outdoors can expand your hosting capabilities and save you the trouble of going in and out of the house unnecessarily. It can be as simple as a small serving station with room for a few bar stools or much more involved, depending on your space and needs. To protect against both rain and shine, consider a covered bar so both you and your guests can stay comfortable. Take into account your landscaping and design style when making decisions. Whatever material you opt for, make sure it is waterproofed for longevity.

Modern fireplace

A fireplace makes an excellent year-round focal point and can enhance outdoor entertaining. “A contemporary fireplace is a sophisticated way to extend your living space beyond the walls of your home,” says Monica Turner, product manager for Heat & Glo. Contemporary, innovative designs are allowing homeowners to execute this upgrade with style and an expectation of durability, like the Palazzo from Heat & Glo, which features a

The Palazzo features marine-grade premium stainless steel that will maintain its luster for years, outdoor-rated, multi-colored LED lights that shine through crushed glass for visual appeal, and an industry-first retractable Power Screen that ensures safety, moving up and down at the press of a button and preventing debris from entering the fireplace. Rethink furniture

Patio furniture has come a long way in recent years. No longer do you need to sacrifice complete comfort when spending time in the great outdoors -- you can outfit your deck or patio with couches and daybeds. Cushioning made from state-of-the-art fabrics designed for the outdoors is making it possible to transform a deck into a veritable living room. Complete the feel with all the entertainment trappings you could expect to enjoy indoors, such as speakers or even a television.

BUSINESS

San Diego Granite is cutting edge BY EMILY SORENSEN Looking to redo your kitchen or bathroom counters? San Diego Granite is a rock-solid choice. San Diego Granite, at 13026 Stowe Drive, Suite C, in the Poway Business Park, has been serving San Diego’s granite needs for over 10 years. Handling both residential and commercial spaces, San Diego Granite can provide a wide variety of granite, quartz and other stone custom counter tops, tables and more. In the past couple of years, San Diego Granite has gone cutting edge by going entirely digital, said Bill Mullett, business co-owner with Doug Main. “We’re completely digital. All the machinery, the measuring devices, everything,” said Mullett. The transition from traditional methods to digital required many changes at San Diego Granite, including hiring an entire new department to handle the digital design, and learning to use the new machinery. “Going digital was a huge thing for us,” said Mullett. A PowerPoint slideshow at www.sdginc.net walks customers through the changes. The company has also gone

That required changing their cutting tools to using a water jet and a diamond blade, which not only made the work environment better for the workers, but also ended up being faster as well, Mullett said. While San Diego Granite continues to offer a wide selection of high-quality granite and quartz, it is also offering a new form of stone, Dekton, which Mullett said was good for exterior use, such as the outside of buildings, statues and barbecues, because it doesn’t heat up the way granite will in sunlight. It can also be used at the bottom of pools, said Mullett, because it is such a hard material that the color won’t

fade. While San Diego Granite is kept busy with its commercial and residential work, there’s one project coming up that the company is looking forward to contributing to the Tony Gwynn memorial site that will be placed near the baseball diamond at Lake Poway. They will be working with Swinerton Builders on the project. The company makes time to give back to the community through organizations like Best Buddies and fundraising for several youth sports teams. San Diego Granite is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday by appointment only. For more information, call 858-486-2040 or visit www.sdginc.net.

y friend John Jones and I have an ongoing debate. John’s company, Jones Manufacturing, has a website (jonesmanufacturing.com). John has an e-mail account through them (john@jonesmanufacturing.com). John uses his business address sometimes, and it’s printed on his business card. Yet he insists on using an e-mail address of johnjjm@yahoo.com for the bulk of his business-related e-mail. I believe he’s making a mistake. My friend’s had the account for years. He finds Yahoo’s ability to store his old e-mails to be preferable to the space taken up on his server by years of archived e-mails. While understanding his point, I maintain good branding demands he always use an e-mail address with his company name in it. The way I see it, every time your e-mail address flashes before a reader’s eyes, the return address leaves a subtle marketing message. Which means even if that e-mail isn’t read an impression has been made. And at some point the recipient will connect your company name with whatever he needs to buy. And he’ll contact you to make the deal. However, if your e-mail address originates from Yahoo, AOL,

Gmail, or any other company besides yours, that selling opportunity has been minimized. While this won’t make it harder for you to spread your message, it certainly won’t simplify it. Face it: Every American’s inundated by 5,000 marketing messages every 24 hours. We’re all finding our customers are numb to our communications efforts, and you need every advantage to try and get ahead. In the movie “Mulan,” the emperor observed “A single grain of rice can be enough to tip the scale.” What if that subtle reminder from your e-mail is that grain of rice? Okay, I’ll confess I use Yahoo accounts when buying stuff online. These accounts receive most of my junk e-mails. However, everything related to my business efforts gets branded by my company e-mail. Those e-mails have signatures with URL, phone, tag line, and social media links. After all, it’s my cyber business card, and I don’t want to miss any opportunities. And yes, I’ve gotten business leads this way. So, John, while I understand your Yahoo account is free and filters spam from your regular account, I think you’re missing a trick for building your business. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing.
