Last Thursday’s graduation ceremony marked the end of an era for Poway High School, as the last member of the Spooner family graduated, ending 24 consecutive years of a member of the family attending the high school. Evan Spooner was the last of 15 members of the family, including his two older sisters and a dozen cousins, to graduate from Poway High within the last 24 years, said Jeanie Spooner, Evan’s mother. Evan’s older sisters Meghan, 23 and Lauren, 22, graduated in 2011 and SEE SPOONER, A12

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire early Sunday that did extensive damage to a garage structure at the Park Meadows condominium complex on Midland Road in Poway. The blaze damaged four of the six two-vehicle garages in the structure and destroyed two vehicles parked inside, according to Poway Deputy Chief Jon Canavan. Residences near the garage structure were threatened but the 24 firefighters who responded to the 3:24 a.m. call were able to keep the flames away, he said. Residents were able to return to their homes once the fire was put out, a process that Canavan said took about 45 minutes. Poway firefighters were assisted by units from the San Diego Fire Department, he said. The fire was “well-involved” in the garage building when the first units arrived six minutes after the call, Canavan said. No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $250,000, he said. Members of the sheriff’s department bomb/arson team are looking for a cause, Canavan said. Nothing suspicious is expected, he stressed - the county is called in to investigate under a contract with the city.

The five-member school board met again in closed session on Monday morning. It was not known whether the board will look beyond the submitted applications and O’Connor-Ratcliff would not comment on the matter. District Supt. John Collins was placed on paid administrative leave on April 25. The action was taken to clear the way for an audit of Collins’s employment contract, according to a district press release issued at the time.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A civil attorney who allowed alcohol at a Playboy-themed birthday party for his 18-year-old daughter had his misdemeanor conviction reduced to an infraction Friday and was ordered to pay a $125 fine. Jeffrey Lake pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to violating San Diego County's social host ordinance, which makes the homeowner responsible for any underage drinking at a party thrown at their home. Superior Court Judge Frederick Maguire said Lake exhibited “aberrant behavior'' the night of the Jan. 2, 2015, party at his Poway

Defense attorney Vikas Bajaj said the Lake family is happy the incident is behind them. “I think the court was saying this is a crime of omission -- not doing something -rather than a crime of intentional commission, meaning doing something on purpose to violate the law,'' Bajaj said outside court.

Westwood parking controversy intensifies

Palomar College board approves RB center BY STEVE DREYER Palomar College will build a small campus in Rancho Bernardo that should be ready for its first students by mid-2018, the school’s governing board agreed Tuesday night. The so-called South Education Center will be housed in a four-story 110,000-square-foot office building at 11111 Rancho Bernardo Road the district purchased in July 2010 for $38.3 million. The building is basically a shell. When finished as an education center, it will provide classrooms and related facilities for approximately 2,800 full-time equivalent students. Board members voted 3-0 Tuesday night to approve the center’s plans and certify its environmental impact report, which had been modified after Westwood area residents raised questions concerning parking and traffic impacts. The amended report concludes that the 27-acre site will have 737 parking spaces - far more than required by the City of San Diego and that while traffic will be more congested in coming years, the campus would be only one of several contributing factors. Board members noted that classes will start and end at different times throughout the day

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK For the second time this month, a Rancho Bernardo community group decided to not make a recommendation on a resident-requested overnight parking restriction for part of Westwood. Around three dozen residents on both sides of the issue filled the Rancho Bernardo Community Council’s Public Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday night. Since none of the committee members made a motion for a recommendation — Tom Lettington was recused from vote or comment since he lives in the impacted area and signed the petition — a meeting summary will be forwarded to the RB Community Council when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23 in the RB Library, said committee Chairwoman Robin Kaufman. The same result occurred last week when the Rancho Bernardo Planning Board’s Traffic and Transportation Committee — also chaired by Kaufman — met on June 7. Its summary will be presented tonight (Thursday) when the planning board meets at 7 p.m. in the RB Swim & Tennis Club. The city has asked both community-elected groups plus the Westwood Club board to weigh in on the petition seeking a two-hour parking restriction between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. on

and evening, resulting in a more staggered traffic flow, especially when compared to what the building would generate as a regular office complex. As to neighbor concerns that students will park on residential streets across Rancho Bernardo Road, the board concluded that should not be an issue. “There is no neighborhood there until you cross six lanes of highway,” board member John Halcon said, noting that he recently visited the area for the first time. Student parking fees, a possible obstacle to using on-site parking spaces, will be waived for the first year and the policy will be reviewed annually, the board was told. Before being purchased by the college, the site had been approved for three office buildings, although only one was constructed. The college has no plans for additional buildings. Board President Mark Evilsizer, who works in an office near the site, said Tuesday night’s vote marked the end of a 20-year quest by the district to find a way to better serve students in the southern portion of the community college district. Some classes have been offered over the years at Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Penasquitos.

certain Westwood residential streets that for the last 10 years have been impacted by 100-plus vehicles each day and night due to overflow from the nearby Waterbridge condos. The city is requiring restriction support from 75 percent of the 122 homes in the impact zone and petition proponents have secured enough signatures. The restriction will also impact them. Westwood Club Manager Steve Fluss said on Wednesday morning that the club’s board notified the city on Feb. 23 that if the petition requirement was met, it would support the parking restriction. He also said the board has been advised on various occasions — not just in connection with the Waterbridge issue — to not rent out its parking lot, as some have suggested as a possible place for the Waterbridge vehicles to go if the petition succeeds. Waterbridge is not part of the Westwood Club’s membership. Several residents — on both sides of the issue — got emotional when arguing their case, especially when it was stated — with some Waterbridge residents in agreement — that some Waterbridge residents rent out their parking spaces within the complex and then park their vehicles in front of Westwood homes. BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK For at least two Rancho Bernardo High 2016 graduates, their commencement ceremony was bittersweet due to joy overshadowed by the physical absence of beloved family members. For Valedictorian Kevin Hu, it was the absence of his deceased brother, who five years earlier almost stood at the podium as he was doing Thursday. For senior Camille Morris, part of her heart was across the world in Kuwait where her soldier father was deployed — or so she thought. Hu said that when giving his commencement speech he was not only speaking for himself, but for his brother, David, who had been in line to become Rancho Bernardo High’s Class of 2012 valedictorian and attend MIT, but died suddenly at home in January 2012 at age 17. Kevin, who was 13 at the time, found his brother in their Rancho Bernardo home. “When presenting this speech, RB High I come back to someone who was Valedictorian part of my life — someone who is Kevin Hu. no longer here,” Hu said. “Here on this Earth, I mean, he is up there. “As his friends call it — physics utopia. I’m sure he’s much, much happier there. Pretty sure there’s an MIT there as well. “And I’d just like to say to him, my brother, that I’m here, standing here giving a speech at high school graduation. I made it — for the both of us. And I’m sure we’ll meet again, but not yet.” After the ceremony, Hu said he believes his older brother was there in spirit and that David influenced him. “Throughout his high school years I was in middle school,” Hu said. “He would teach me things, like how to

(But his advice included) that I cannot continually sit alone all the time, that I needed to hang out (with others). Things that I will never forget.” For Morris, the ceremony took on a surprising twist when her father, Army Master Sgt. Derrick Morris, walked out onto the field. As far as his daughter knew, he was still on his more than year-long deployment to Kuwait, until RB High Principal Dave LeMaster announced that Master Sgt. Morris was making a brief visit so he could witness his daughter’s graduation in person. “It was breathtaking and so surreal,” Camille Morris said when interviewed by 10News, which was among several television stations present to cover the surprise. “That was a whole year of emotions exploded at once, so it’s unbeatable,” her father said. He said the surprise took nine months of planning. Both called it among the best moments in their lives.

How is the Real Estate Market Doing? I am asked this question almost every day, and here is my state of the market report. This report covers the local San Diego markets for Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and the I-15 corridor. Market Performance The market has been very strong and active since 2012, and it has now met and exceeded the high points in pricing that came in late 2005. Housing prices are now at new highs in this local market area. Economic Forces that Influence the Market Free markets are driven by supply and demand. When the demand exceeds supply, prices rise and sellers are in control. This is known as a seller’s market. On the other hand, when supply exceeds demand, we have a buyer’s market, with buyers in control to find the best values with the lowest prices. In a balanced market, supply and demand can more easily accommodate the needs of both buyers and sellers. Prices will be stable and it will be easier for transactions to occur. It helps to have an adequate supply of homes at prices that buyers can pay. Demand occurs when we have buyers who are willing and able to buy. Strong employment and low interest rates are factors that enable buyers to buy. A good supply means we have enough homes to meet normal demands. This occurs when sellers are selling and when enough new homes are being built to meet the housing needs of the population. Buyer’s Market or Seller’s Market? We continue to be in a strong seller’s market. Prices have risen to new highs because there are not enough homes available to meet the strong buyer demand. If we had more homes to sell we would be selling a lot more homes. People are simply not putting their houses up for sale, often because they cannot find a suitable replacement property. What keeps this market moving is the strong buyer demand, enabled by continuing low interest rates. With a 3 ½ percent interest rate, a buyer can purchase twice the home with the same monthly payment they would have with a 7 percent interest rate. What about Renting? Buyer demand is also being driven by a “wild and crazy” rental market. Who wants to pay astronomical rents, especially when they seem to increase every 6 or 12 months? If you are able to purchase a home, instead of renting, your monthly mortgage payments can be fixed for 30 years, and your property taxes are fixed thanks to California’s Proposition 13. A Word of Advice It has been said that the average person will buy and pay for one house during their lifetime. You can buy that house for yourself or you can buy that house for your landlord. Large Homes vs Small Homes – Are you Upsizing or Downsizing? There is a disparity in today’s market between larger (more expensive) homes and smaller (less expensive) homes. More people are downsizing than upsizing. If you look at Poway as an example, you will see that there are really two markets: homes priced less than $900,000 and homes priced more than $900,000. The smaller homes market, where you find lots of eager first time buyers, has virtually no inventory, making things very difficult for buyers who want to buy. The larger homes are still selling, but they are in a more balanced market, meaning that sellers (not just the buyers) need to compete. The smaller home market has only a 7-week supply of homes. (Normally at this time of year, it should be a 6-month supply of homes.) There are more of the larger homes on

the market, and they tend to sit on the market longer. There is currently an 8-month supply of homes in the above $900,000 market in Poway. Do I need to Sell first before I can Buy? Homeowners wanting to move may face the dilemma of needing to sell first before they can buy. This is because they need the proceeds from their sale in order to finance their purchase. But, most people would prefer to buy and sell with concurrent closings, so they wouldn’t need to move twice. That may seem impossible with the low inventory of homes, because they are not sure they will be able to find a suitable replacement property. This is especially difficult for people who are downsizing, and somewhat easier for people who are upsizing. They know they can sell their existing home (especially in the smaller home market), but finding their replacement home will be a challenge. If you are downsizing, you may sell your larger home for less money than you wanted, and you’re going to pay more than you wanted for the smaller home you are trying to buy. Things would be easier if we had a Balanced Market In a seller’s market, sellers are euphoric, and in some cases unrealistic as to what their home is actually worth. Buyers, on the other hand, are more likely to have feelings of sticker shock and remorse. When they finally find the right home to buy, they may learn that 10 other people are trying to buy the same home, and it may end up selling for more than the listing price. When they finally get into escrow, they may come to realize they paid more than they intended for a home not meeting all of their wishes. We are in a market where it has become increasingly difficult to improve your circumstances when downsizing. This is because we really have a housing shortage in San Diego, especially for “affordable” homes. How can I Buy and Sell Concurrently? Basically, you want to find a house to buy, and then have your existing home ready to sell, so you can try to close on both transactions concurrently. To do this successfully, you’ll need to first list your home for sale, “subject to finding replacement property.” You’ll be looking at the homes for sale at the same time. As soon as you have a buyer for your home, you’ll move quickly to get an offer in on a house you would like to buy. Your Purchase Offer will need to be “contingent on the sale and closing of your other property.” An experienced agent can help convince the seller that you’ll be in a strong position to buy, and in fact, already have your other buyer in escrow. With this approach, you can make sure you won’t find yourself without a home in case the other transaction falls out of escrow. Or, you can Sell First to be in a Strong Position as a Ready Buyer If you are able to separate the two transactions by arranging temporary housing, you’ll have more flexibility to make the best deal possible on each of your two transactions. You’ll focus first on selling your existing home at the best price, then you’ll move into a temporary living arrangement, and you’ll search for your next home as a strong flexible buyer with cash in hand. Markets Don’t Stand Still Markets tend to go through cycles, and they are always dynamically changing. An experienced agent can help you understand what the market is currently doing. This is essential when developing market pricing strategies. Not Sure What to do Next? Call George Cooke at (858) 674-1222 if you’d like to discuss your own situation.

FROM PUSD, A1 district or leave before his contract ends. Mel Robertson, the district’s associate superintendent of learning support services, has been serving as acting superintendent during Collins’s leave. O’Connor-Radcliff, noting that she was speaking only for herself, said bringing an interim superintendent on board for up to four months would allow Robertson to return to her regular job full time. Robertson is one of three associates in the district. The other two Malliga Tholandi (business support services) and Tracy Hogarth (personnel). Both are retiring at the end of June. Collins has been superintendent since 2010. He has been with the district since 1989 serving in several capacities, including as principal of Twin Peaks Middle School and Rancho Bernardo High School. With a base salary of nearly $300,000 and a total salary of almost $500,000 after benefits and perks, Collins is one of the highest-paid educators in the state.

TOP OF THE PEAK

COURTESY PHOTO

Boy Scouts from Rancho Bernardo Troop 680, led by Steve and Ben Keane, recently hiked to the top of Telescope Peak. They reached the 11,049-foot summit to enjoy an amazing panoramic view from Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States, to the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere, Bad Water in Death Valley. Pictured in the back row are Sam Armstrong, Devin Buetow, Kyle Heuschele, Ben Keane, Peter Fisher and Alex Keane. Front row are Kameron Wong, Alex Buetow, Josh Wong, Austin Peterson and Dan Heuschele.

FROM SPOONER, A1 2013. “They’ve all been talking about it for the last couple of years,” said Spooner. “Calling it the end of an era and saying it was going to be so weird not to have a Spooner at Poway High.” The Spooner family, who own and operate Spooner’s Woodworks in Poway, have long been heavily involved at Poway High. Jim Spooner, Evan’s father, is the youngest of seven children, five of whom live Poway. “(Jim and his brothers) are always going to football games at the high school, and they follow Poway High baseball because all the Spooner boys played baseball,” she said.

Jim and Jeanie Spooner moved to Poway over 20 years ago, and most of the family migrated to the area when the store opened in 1980. It’s still a family-run business, with ownership currently transitioning over from the two eldest brothers to Jim and several other relatives. Several of Spooner’s nieces and nephews also work at the business, she said. Most of the Spooners at Poway High were heavily involved in sports and ASB, said Spooner. “For homecoming, (the ASB members) would come to Spooner’s Woodworks for backdrops,” she said. Spooner said Evan, who will be attending Palomar College in the fall and is considering studying computer science, said it was “kind of cool” to be the end of the

Spooner era at Poway High School. Though not every one of the past 24 years has seen a Spooner graduate, there has always been a Spooner attending the school, said Spooner. One year saw three Spooner cousins graduating at the same time. While this era has ended, Spooner said it’s not the end forever for Spooners at Poway High. A whole new generation of Spooners is beginning to make its way through the Poway Unified School District, with several grand-nieces and -nephews in preschool. The eldest of the new era is a fourth grader at Midland, said Spooner. “We are absolutely ready for a new era (in a decade or so) when all the little Spooners come to Poway High School,” said Spooner. “

GUEST COMMENTARY

Voices from the Class of 2016 It is tradition that we dedicate this space to student speakers at local high school graduations. After graduation, it does not get any easier. We’re going to have obstacles. We’re going to have failure. We’re going to have people blocking us from our dreams. And, come on, face reality, we’re going to be #studentloans2020 for some time so we have to get used to that. But we’re also going to have triumphs and personal victories. And what fuels the fire is that perseverance to take life seriously. So let’s follow the words of the great philosopher Shia LaBeouf, “Never quit. Just do it. Make your dreams come true.”… Being legendary, that means going out. It means living out our dreams as quickly as we can, because we don’t know how much longer we have left. It means that life is short, so we must reach outside that comfort zone. It means that each of us, by joining clubs, by taking that new class, by showing up every day and becoming an integral part of this school. We are legendary. Kevin Hu Valedictorian Rancho Bernardo High School The “Life of Pi” adequately sums up our four years. We are ejected into a lifeboat in an entirely new world, trying to navigate our way through the turbulent waters of adolescence. On our boat remains a friend like a Bengal tiger. A friend that just tolerates you for these four years. And by the end of your journey, you are amazed that this friend has stayed by your side all this time and did not kill you. Pi’s journey reminds me of the adventures faced by many of us. On the last day of Pi’s trip, the tiger deserts him. For us, our animals left us on our last day of our senior year because the administration says that we are apparently not allowed to bring any dogs or tortoises on school property … Our lives are not fiction, but we all have our unique stories to tell. Stories that are comprised of characters that will come and some that will go. Chapters with triumphs and some with downfalls. The plot of your story will flash right before your eyes, just like these past four years. So even when you’re feeling as lonely as Holden from “The Catcher in the Rye,” try to surround yourself with Ron’s and Hermione’s that will help you defeat Lord Voldemort and any other obstacles on your epic journey ahead. Michael LaPorte Valedictorian Poway High School Like any teenager, over the past four years I’ve spent the occasional sleepless night staring up at the sky through my window. From these nights, I developed a crippling Starbucks addiction and an appreciation for the structure of constellations. In front of me, the sea of bright and eager faces of the Class of 2016 remind me of those very stars that brought order to my most chaotic nights. On an astronomer’s map, every star of a single constellation is connected by dashed lines, as invisible yet unbreakable as the bonds between each of us. Every star is necessary the overall shape, just as each of the individuals before me is essential to the Nighthawk Legacy. From the moment we were greeted by SEE VOICES, A23

OUR READERS WRITE Tips for the trail I’ve hiked from Lake Poway to Mount Woodson dozens of times over the past 30 years. In recent years weekend hikes have become more crowded, but I always welcome additional people to experience nature and all its glory. Unfortunately, a few never learned or have forgotten trail etiquette so here are a few basics for the benefit of all: • Nature is a place of respite from the constant clamor of everyday life. This is no place for blaring, amplified music, animated cell phone conversations or loud conversations with hiking partners. • In narrow sections of the trail, groups should walk in single file. • Hikers walking downhill yield to those coming uphill on switchbacks and narrow trail sections. • Hikers should always yield to horses, stopping and standing off trail so as to not be viewed as threatening to the animal. If in doubt, communicate with the rider. • Hikers passing slower hikers do so on the left and announce his/her presence, for example saying “on your left.” • Stay on the trail; do not cut across switchbacks as it hastens erosion of the trail. • Find a place to step off the trail if you stop for a rest. While we’re at it here’s a few tips to make your hiking more enjoyable: • Bring more water that you think you need; you may need a gallon or more when hiking Mount Woodson on a warm summer day. • Wear proper foot wear; this usually means hiking boots with lugged soles to protect your feet and ankles from injury. • Wear a hat and sunscreen. • Bring a gallon-size or larger Ziploc bag to pack out all your trash. Experiencing nature allows us time for self-reflection and rejuvenation of the soul; in these

complicated times we live in these tenets are more important than ever. L.B. Hom Rancho Bernardo

Praise for band fest Those of us who attended the two-day, free band festival last month in Old Poway Park shared in one of the wonders of Poway! The Pomerado Community Band is to be commended for the effort it put into an event that brings together bands from not only the San Diego area, but from other parts of Southern California and even Arizona. The bands ranged from eight fantastic trumpeters to wonderful concert bands. The musical offerings were so varied that nearly every taste could be pleased. The festival is an annual May event at the park. It requires much effort and those who perform deserve audiences worth of their talent and the thanks of Poway. Judith Nemec Poway

Back to the 1950s I am compelled to respond to the June 9 “Au Contraire” column by Amy Roost The article raises many troubling issues. The overriding message of the column is that we all need to take responsibility for our own safety. While this sounds noble, this implies that rape victims can be responsible in some way for their attack. The comparison of the behavior of the young woman who was brutalized by Brock Turner at Stanford to someone waving money around in a “sketchy” neighborhood is offensive and inaccurate. Consider This BY BARRY CRONIN

The gleam in a man’s eye

J

une 11 marked the 66th anniversary of the date of my birth. Understanding fully this event is of interest to no one other than I and a paltry handful of people on the planet, it does nevertheless afford me the opportunity to depart my customary monthly political and do the one thing every Irishman was born to do - tell another good story. It is the fatal flaw of my race. Even in this digital world of emails, texting, and misspelled, abbreviated tweets, we old world, maudlin Irish still fancy ourselves modern day “Seanchaithe,” beloved tellers of tales and keepers of all the ancient traditions and stories. It’s an Irish thing. Why simply answer a question or explain something succinctly when one can make a grand story of it? “Well now! Let me just tell you about that!” This is the story my mother confessed as I sat at her death bed during her final days. By the time she finished the telling

of it, we were apparently laughing so loud, we alarmed the staff. A nurse came in to see if everything was OK. This was her story, finally told, of an enigmatic, old black-and-white photograph on the mantelpiece. It was a simple picture of our father, a handsome, broad-shouldered man in a tweed jacket and watch fob, sporting a movie star haircut in the fashion of the times. But it was the look in his eyes that was so captivating. We just couldn’t figure it out. Even as kids, we knew this was something special. We teased him frequently. “Dad! You old seadog! What were you up to?” He would, of course, never answer. Best we might have gotten out of him was a chuckle as he turned the pages of his Boston Globe. Mother, for her part, was no better. “Well kids. Your father was a rascal.” They might have exchanged a glance before getting on with whatever it was they were doing. But

Obama’s con job on gun control

D

uring my decades of management problem solving consulting with companies and government agencies around the world, I often encountered the following scenario. A senior executive would invite me in to meet with the top team. They would describe a problem that had been pestering them for quite some time. Then invariably, someone would say, “The problem is unsolvable. We know what the solution is, but the solution won’t work.” Then they would cite various reasons, such as “not enough money,” and “lack of top management support.” It never occurred to these people that if their solution couldn’t work, then it obviously wasn’t a solution at all. People frequently asked me if I’d ever seen a management problem that couldn’t be solved. The answer is “no.” All management problems are solvable if, rather than getting stuck on a solution they think should (but won’t) work, they would generate a solution that would work within their given boundaries. Not surprising, the same thing happens all the time in politics, only the

dynamic is harder to overcome, because people tend to be less rational when looking at solutions that differ from their “party’s line.” People embrace a solution they think should work, even when facing a preponderance of evidence that their proposed solution will never work. Gun control is just such an issue. Proponents on the left, led by President Obama, are using the recent Orlando atrocity as a reason to ban guns in America. NBC’s “Meet the Press” panel even went so far as to agree that “who” did the shooting didn’t matter as much as the fact that guns were used in the attack. They ignored the fact that bombs used by the Boston Marathon bombers are outlawed everywhere in the country. Bans don’t work. I’m going to throw up if I hear one more gun control advocate refer to “access to guns” as a causal variable in any of these terrorist attacks. The evidence is indisputable showing an inverse correlation between gun control and societal violence. Gun control increases rather than decreases violence in society. Simply compare Chicago to anywhere.

William R. Cronin that was it. We never learned the story behind the picture. It was 1951 and my father, William Robert Cronin, a Navy Veteran of World War II, found himself unexpectedly re-called to active duty during the Korean War. The timing could not have been worse. By that time, he was already married to a beautiful, brilliant Irish girl from Ayer, Massachusetts by the name of Mayrita Barry and they had one infant son, the first of six children. He had a job, a new family, and a cozy little

In listening to the mindless gun control dribble during the aftermath of the Orlando massacre, I finally realized why the president is so quick to blame events such as this on private gun ownership. It’s a con job. As long as he sells the concept to gullible voters, it becomes the perfect non-solution to a problem he doesn’t want to confront in the first place. He knows by now he’ll never take away Americans’ Constitutional right to bear arms. Better people than he have tried. Americans are not ready to give up the Constitution and smart people know it won’t solve any problems. Mr. Obama is a great blame shifter. His persistent claim that taking guns away from law-abiding Americans is the only solution (even if it can never work), gives him a whole slew of people to blame for a problem he is not solving. He can blames the NRA and the Republicans and anyone else who supports the Constitution. He doesn’t care if the whole blame game is a complete fraud, he only cares that his followers and the media aren’t holding him accountable to develop a solution that works. It’s time we get real and embrace a workable solution. This means implementing a viable macro-strategy to combat the kind of global terrorism currently being spawned by radical Islamic jihadists. America has no such strategy. Because he wants to be seen as the “peace president,” Mr. Obama refuses to wage war on those who aspire to kill us. apartment on Richardson Avenue in Wakefield, Massachusetts. But orders are orders and must be obeyed. He was provided a train ticket from Boston to Jacksonville, Florida, where he was to report for duty. It was at the going away party on the day of his departure that my mother took that picture. She wanted something to remember him by. On the way to the station, dad suddenly instructed mom to swing by the apartment. He had left his ticket somewhere in the apartment, he told her, but couldn’t remember where and needed her to help him find it. Mom went up to help him search. It was, of course, in his pocket the whole time. One minute became 15 and dad made his train with only seconds to spare. Nine months later, I was born. Turns out dad left her more than a photograph to remember him by. And that was her story. As mom bequeathed me the beloved old photograph, she smiled, looked me in the eye, and my heart melted. Mother and son touched foreheads one last time. “Have you heard about the gleam in a man’s eye, Barry?” “Yes mom.” I answered. “And do you see the look on your father’s face, the one you kids always teased him about?” “Yes mom,” I answered again. “That was you.” Cronin is a Poway resident and the assistant police chief at MCAS Miramar.

FROM LETTERS, A20 The flaw lies in Ms. Roost’s “inevitability of rape” theory: males are more easily aroused than females; young males have limited impulse control; thus, rape is inevitable. This, she implies, is particularly likely when there are vulnerable women in their path. This thinking victimizes the males that she attempts to defend. To describe young men as overly sexualized, uncontrolled beings demeans men of all ages. Being aroused and having limited impulse control does not make a rapist. Rapists are deviants who seek to dominate, degrade and dehumanize their victims (both female and male). Statistics show that these deviants are apt to rape again. Brock Turner assaulted an unconscious person behind a dumpster. The details of his violation are shocking. To dismiss this or any rape as in any measure attributed to an overactive libido aroused by a drunk young woman victimizes both parties and takes our thinking back to the 1950s. Leslie Carter Poway

A matter of self-identity In response to Ted Sandall’s letter published on June 9, I would like to provide some education about transgender students. For the true transgender, it is not a decision about someone “feeling” that they want to use one restroom over another. It is a matter true self identity. No sane person would “decide” to take on potential hate, ridicule, bullying, prejudice and isolation that comes with living his/her life authentically. And when it comes to changing morals, it would be a much better world if we all chose to educate ourselves about people who are just different than us, live with love, respect and compassion for each other, and realize that good old common sense no longer serves our changing world. FROM VOICES, A20 overzealous LINK crew leaders, we took our place as tiny stars in this constellation. Through the next four years these reluctant lights grew to brazen flames, as the Class of 2016 began to identify by the three universal characteristics that brand us Nighthawks. As Nighthawks, we all share a genuine preparedness for the next steps we take, an acute perception of our various futures and a comprehensive understanding of the world around us. These shared characteristics cemented the friendships and partnerships that have allowed the Class of 2016 to make a lasting impression… Rather than getting caught up in our own achievements, we learned to appreciate the success and diversity of others. As we Nighthawks scatter throughout a variety of fields, whether it’s the military, the workforce or a prestigious university, we are ready to take our places among hundreds of thousands of other stars ... WHAT A FINISH Hodge caps career with second title, Player of Year honors

SHERRI DUNLAP

Zach Hodge was named the San Diego Section Player of the Year.

BY MICHAEL BOWER Three years, two section championships. It doesn’t get much better than that – unless your name is Zach Hodge. The Poway High senior boys lacrosse player not only completed a second consecutive banner year, he was also recently named the San Diego Section Player of the Year. Not a bad way for the final curtain to fall on a prep career that ended with two Open Division championships in three years with the Titans. “It is a real honor to be named player of the year,” said Hodge, who spent his freshman year at Cathedral Catholic before transferring to Poway. “I could not have done it without all of my teammates. They really pushed me hard in practice and encouraged me to

get better.” Hodge, a midfielder, is the second straight player from Poway to earn San Diego Section Player of the Year honors. Jake Fiske was named the player of the year last season. The Titans went 18-3 this year and were ranked No. 3 on the west coast. The program is quickly becoming one of the best in the country and Hodge has been a big part of it. “I just think all of the hard work we put in is the reason we are so successful,” Hodge said. “The saying goes, ‘hard work beats talent.’ I think that is the main key for us. Everyone just works super hard.” Hodge proved to be clutch all year for the Titans, who beat Torrey Pines for the second straight season in the SEE HODGE, B4

PREP BOYS LACROSSE

Burke named section’s Coach of the Year BY MICHAEL BOWER Zack Burke had a plan for the Poway High boys lacrosse program when he first took over four years ago: build a powerhouse. It’s safe to say he has executed that plan. The Titans have not only transformed into the top program in the county, but they have also become one of the best in the state and the entire west region. The coach of the back-to-back San Diego Section Open Division champions still wants more, though. “I am not into setting lofty goals,” said Burke, who was recently named the 2016 CIF San Diego

West Coast. Right now we are No. 3.” Burke’s 2016 squad broke last year’s record for wins in a season with 18. There were only three bumps in the road for Poway en route to its second straight Open Division championship. The Titans fell to St. Margaret’s, St. Ignatius and Torrey Pines. But Poway avenged its loss to the Falcons by beating them in the championship game, 7-6, for the second consecutive season. MLB DRAFT

Former RBHS teammates selected by Marlins BY MICHAEL BOWER Former Rancho Bernardo High teammates Parker Bugg and Brandon Berry could be reuniting soon. The right-handed pitcher and infielder, respectively, were both selected by the Miami Marlins in the 2016 MLB Draft over the weekend. Bugg, who is a junior at Louisiana State University, was nabbed in the 27th round with the 803rd overall pick. Berry, a senior at Cal State University Northridge, was taken by Miami in the 33rd round with the 983rd overall pick. “That was pretty cool,” said Bugg of himself and his former teammate being selected by the Marlins. “I haven’t talked to him or anything about it and it feels like forever ago when we played together at Rancho Bernardo, but I have seen him a few times since then and it would be really cool if we end up on the same team.” Bugg, who was drafted in the 34th round by the Baltimore Orioles out of high school in 2013, has the option to return to LSU for his senior season. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 218-pound pitcher said he will take some time to think it over. The Tigers were eliminated in the NCAA Super Regional Saturday by Coastal Carolina. Bugg had a 3.40 ERA and struck out 36 over 39 2/3 innings for LSU in 2016. Berry, 2011 Rancho Bernardo graduate, hit .294 with nine home runs for CSUN.

Warriors defeat Wave to win Memorial Day tourney title

BRAVES WIN TITLE The Rancho Bernardo Little League minor Braves went a perfect 20-0 in the regular season before wrapping up a championship with a 3-1 record in the playoffs. The Braves are the first team to run through the regular season without a blemish in at least the last seven years. The Braves are led by head coach Ruben Lopez and assistant coaches Matt Andre, Ty Reed and Oscar Lopez. Pictured: Justin Lopez, Topher Bayne, Michael Hernandez, Jack Engblom, Joseph Betz, Adrian Pena, Nick Reed, Matthew Andre, Junior Gonzales and Charlie Armes.

The Rancho Bernardo Warriors put their bats to work in the TCS Memorial Day Classic championship game, outslugging the CBA Wave to capture the tournament title with a 15-11 win at Vista Murietta High School. The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to four lead changes and a real thriller. The teams banged out 25 hits between them, seven for extra bases, and with everybody on both teams contributing. Chandler Cameron got the nod to start the game as pitcher for The Warriors. He lasted three-plus innings and held the hard-hitting Wave to just four runs. Wayne Moeck, Tanner Clark and Landon Ilog came in relief, but it was Ilog who got the win by stopping a CBA threat in the top of the sixth. Timmy Scarlett came in and closed it down in the seventh to earn the save. The Wave scored two runs in the first, but Trevor Engstrand narrowed the lead with an RBI triple in the bottom of the inning, plating Luke Romag. Romag, Timmy Scarlett, Clark and Ethan Bradshaw led the Warriors with two hits each, including a timely, go ahead, two-run single by

Bradshaw in the fourth inning to give the Warriors a 5-4 lead. The speedy Braeden Bourne crossed the plate in the fifth inning on a huge RBI double by Moeck. The sixth inning spelled defeat for the Wave. With the Warriors down 10-8 and two outs, Scarlett belted a clutch three-run hit, scoring Bradshaw, Romag and Dylan O'brien to give the Warriors the lead. Later in the inning, a two-run single by Clark widened the lead, and a bases-loaded walk to James Schwarzschild was the final

run of an exciting eight-run sixth inning for the Warriors. CBA Wave mustered just one run in the top half of the seventh, making the score 15-11. An RBI groundout by the Wave started a comeback, but Ilog flashed the leather with a great diving stop at third base to trade that run for the second out. Then Scarlett induced a weak dribbler from the next batter and catcher Charlie Fick was able to field it beautifully and fire a bullet over to first base for the final out of the game.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Hoving delivers for Nighthawks in final season Senior pitcher posted a 2.12 ERA for Del Norte High School in 2016 BY TERRY MONAHAN Baseball, as the old saying from a Saturday Night Live skit goes, has been very, very good to Michael Hoving. It has been part of the Hoving family since dad played college baseball at Westmont College. “As soon as I could crawl, I’m sure I was throwing balls around the house,’’ said Michael, who graduated last week from Del Norte. “I went into Little League and that was it for life. “I remember crawling up on my dad’s bed and asking him to teach me about baseball situations. I wanted to learn everything.’’ Hoving put all those lessons to good use this spring as the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder had a memorable senior year. A reliever as a junior, Hoving was the ace of the starting staff. He posted an 8-1 record with a 2.12 ERA. He surrendered just 56 base hits in 59 innings of work. Opponents hit just .242 against the right-hander as the Nighthawks went all the way to the San Diego Section Division III championship game for the second straight season before losing to Coronado. “I changed my approach,’’ said Hoving, who plans to major in mechanical engineering at San Diego State. “I focused on getting ahead of batters. Once I get ahead, I can dictate what happens from there.’’ That was not the way Hoving pitched in 2015 when he was mainly a reliever for the Nighthawks, who went to the Division III finals, losing Christian in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hoving’s statistics from 2015 — he was 3-4 with a

was sky-high, but in my first varsity game I got shelled, gave up the lead and the game.’’ Hoving said he spent the remainder of junior year trying to shake off that outing. “As a senior, I was sure I could get batters out,’’ Hoving said. “Junior year I was hoping to get batters out. “My confidence, with all the weight room work to get stronger, snowballed. I felt like a different pitcher.’’ Del Norte coach Rielly Embrey noticed the difference from the outset of this season. “He struggled with command last year,’’ Embrey said. “This year he settled on throwing strikes. He got ahead and made batters go after his pitch. “He’d throw that sinker with devastating results. Hitting that bowling ball he throws up there is no fun for a hitter. I’ve had my hands go numb after hitting sinkers enough times to know what that feels like.’’ Hoving punctuated his new-found confidence with his final start, a two-hitter in a 10-0 win over Escondido in the semifinals to earn another trip to the finals. “I came here from Seattle after eighth grade and now I’ve graduated from Del Norte,’’ Hoving said. “I couldn’t believe that the weather was perfect here every day. “But my million minutes at Del Norte are up.’’ As is his time on the mound too.

FROM BURKE, B1 never lost when holding a lead through three quarters. Burke credits meditation for those two feats. “We did mindfulness training,” he said. “We had a guy from USD come in and work on meditating. My big thing that I want is my players to focus on the moment and not let fear or doubt get in the mind. We did a weekend workshop and learned how to meditate. The mental toughness we had was outstanding. I can teach lacrosse and all that stuff, but when a team of 35 guys can control their thoughts that is pretty powerful and I think that is what we had this year.” The meditation even helped Burke as a coach. “The last couple of years, if somebody did something wrong, I would flip out and lose my cool in a one-goal game,” he said. “But now I would breathe in the fourth quarter and believe in my team and focus on the moment. I would communicate with my players and analyze the situation. So it has helped me a lot.” Burke, who was named the U.S. Lacrosse Coach of the Year after last year’s championship run, says this year’s squad was a tad better than the previous team. There could be an argument made that this year’s Poway squad is the best in San Diego Section history. “Last year, I controlled the guys and had them play really long, slow possessions,” Burke said. “I let his year’s team go. I gave them the ball and wanted them to attack so much so it would get the other team on their heels. These guys knew what to do. I wasn’t yelling from the sideline telling them what to do.” As for being named the section’s coach of the year? Burke calls it an honor, but he is already looking ahead to next season. “I am really happy about it,” he said. “It comes along with territory when you do a good job and the team wins. I am happy about it, but I still think there is so much more we can do, so much more potential. I am happy just not satisfied and ready to go get after it and do more.” The Titans have the pieces in place to do more. A third straight Open Division championship is certainly not out of the question, even with 14 seniors graduation. Poway will just be reloading, as the incoming eighth-grade class is coming off a county championship. “We are short a defender or two, but I think I have figured that out,” Burke said. “We are loaded on offense. We bring back the entire attack. We just have to develop a guy for the defense and we will be right back in the mix for sure.”

He is fearless. He looks right down the barrel of a gun and goes right after it.” The next chapter for Hodge will begin at Cleveland State, who will be in its inaugural season with a mens lacrosse

Chin’s Rancho Bernardo offers traditional Chinese Szechwan cuisine and seafood in an excellent dining atmosphere. Established in 1984, Chin’s offers traditional house specialties such as the highly recommended Hon Hon Shrimp: lightly braised jumbo shrimp sautéed in a sweet and pungent sauce; or Tangerine Crispy Beef: chunks of crispy beef sautéed with tangerine peel and chili peppers in a chef’s special sauce. Try their Hot Braised Delight: a combination of shrimp and sliced chicken breast cooked in a homemade chili tomato sauce, or their Lin Ko Steak: tender sliced steak sautéed with onions in a black pepper steak sauce. Their prices are very reasonable and portions are large. Chin’s Rancho Bernardo is located at 15721 Bernardo Heights Parkway, in the Sprout’s Center. PHS grad storming the stage in ‘Stomp’ BY EMILY SORENSEN A Poway High graduate is drumming up major success with a role in “Stomp.” Cade Slattery, 19, who graduated from Poway High School in 2014, has been playing the role of Ringo in the long-running show since December and is currently performing Off-Broadway. Slattery also Poway High recently portrayed Ringo in a graduate nationwide “Stomp” Cade tour from February Slattery stars in the to April. “I love OffBroadway (portraying) Ringo, production it’s a blast,” said of "Stomp." Slattery, who now lives in New York City. This is the first big show Slattery has been a part of, he said. Slattery got his start preparing for “STOMP” early, joining a percussive performance group called Arts in Motion in El Cajon that is run by Chris Rubio, a “Stomp” veteran, when he was 9 years old.

“It’s a funny story,” said Slattery. “My older sister saw them perform at a San Diego Gulls hockey game, and she thought one of (the performers) was cute, so she joined, and I thought it was cool so I joined too.” Though Slattery’s sister didn’t end up staying with the group, he said, he did, and still performs with them when he comes back to San Diego for vacations. He performed in a “percussive motivational assembly” at a San Diego elementary school with the group last week, he said. Slattery described his character Ringo as someone who is kind of awkward and doesn’t really fit in. Ringo is one of eight characters in “Stomp,” which is a show told through music and percussion but without any words. “It makes music with everyday objects you’d find on the street, but we don’t use words. It’s a show without spoken language, because music is a language used around the world. Anyone can come to “Stomp” and understand it, no matter what language they speak,” said Slattery. The items used in “Stomp” include everything from brooms to garbage cans. Slattery was 18 when he made it

through the “Stomp” auditions, he said, something he had watched his fellow members of Arts in Motion experience throughout his time with the group. He was trained for roles, but wasn’t picked up for a role in the New York show until this December, he said. Though he was an experienced drummer from his time with Arts in Motion, Slattery said he had to train in movement, something Rubio helped him with. “Half of the show is moving fluidly around stage,” he said. “That was something I had to learn.” He also had to learn the music and how to shape the role of Ringo to suit himself, he said. Slattery said he isn’t interested in pursuing anything other than “Stomp” in the future and hopes to be with the show for several years. It is possible for him to play other roles in “Stomp,” but he said he will wait for the show runners to ask him if he wants to switch roles, rather than requesting a change. “I don’t want to change how my “Stomp” journey will go,” said Slattery. “I want it to be as raw and real as possible. When (the show runners) think you’re ready to move on (to another role), they’ll let you know.”

SUMMER CAMP 2016 This summer, catch up, keep up or get ahead in math!

A

t Mathnasium, we help students in grades 1 to 12 reach their full potential in math by teaching in a way that makes sense to them. Our programs are designed to fill gaps, build confidence, dare we say, “make math fun?” Kids catch up and often leap way ahead – whether they started behind, or are already advanced in math. We’ll help your students retain all they learned in math class this year, so they’re well-equipped for a strong start in the

fall. With school out of session, summer can be tons of fun – but it can also lead to a loss of academic skills called the "summer slide." Luckily, Mathnasium is here to stop the decline! The Mathnasium summer program allows for drop-in sessions for students on a flexible schedule. Our initial assessment helps the talented Mathnasium team develop an individualized learning plan for each student, and later, a progress

mestic Short Hair, is looking for a loving home. She was brought in by her previous owner who had too many pets, and is now looking for a new family to call her own. Millie may be a bit shy at first, but once she gets to know her humans, she loves to sit on laps for gentle petting. She would be a wonderful companion for a mellow, easy-going home where she can be pampered and spoiled for years to come. Millie is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s San Diego Campus located at 5500 Gaines Street. To learn more about making Millie part of your family, please call 619-299-7012 or visit sdhumane.org.

Regional water agency takes optimistic stance SAN DIEGO (CNS) - You still shouldn't water the lawn too much, but the San Diego region will have enough water supply to meet demand for the next three years even if they're dry, the San Diego County Water Authority says. The agency's Board of Directors, after hearing the projections from staff, voted unanimously on June 9 on a regional approach to the state's new process for certifying supply sufficiency for the Water Authority's 24 member agencies, and to establish a long-term drought awareness initiative. “This is a significant accomplishment for the San Diego region,'' said Mark Weston, chairman of the SDCWA board. “We have invested in new sources of supply while improving our infrastructure to handle multi-year droughts, and our initial data confirms the region's continued ability to meet demands even with the conservative

assumptions required by the state.'' The agency credited the positive supply outlook to agreements to acquire Colorado River water, the Carlsbad desalination plant coming online, and local initiatives like water recycling. Weston, a Poway resident, said residents and businesses in the county have reduced water consumption by a total of 21 percent since June, well over a state-mandated target of 13 percent for the region. The water that was saved has been stored for future use, according to the SDCWA. An agency campaign to promote continued water use efficiency is scheduled to begin this summer. “Five years of drought have made it clear that we must keep our focus on discretionary outdoor water use by embracing low-water plants and high-efficiency irrigation,'' said Maureen Stapleton, general manager of the Water

Authority. “Yard by yard, WaterSmart landscapes are becoming the norm in San Diego County, and we are committed to continuing this transformation through classes, technical assistance and other efforts.'' The Water Authority also will continue to raise awareness about wasteful water practices prohibited statewide, such as irrigating lawns so as to cause runoff or within 48 hours after measurable rain. Federal climate officials today pronounced the official end of the El Nino conditions that produced heavier-than-usual rain in parts of Northern California. As strong as the El Nino was, it was spotty and didn't bring as much precipitation as water officials had hoped for. Also, the long-term weather outlook calls for the opposite condition -- La Nina -- to develop, which could bring drier weather to the state this winter.

Home prices climb, sales decline in May SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The median sales price of homes in San Diego County rose last month, while the number of residences that changed ownership fell, according to San Diego Association of Realtors figures. The price of a single-family home that sold in May was $570,000, or $10,000 more than the month before. The cost was 9 percent higher than May 2015, the SDAR said. In May, just over 2,200 houses changed hands, down 2 percent from April and 3 percent lower than the same month last year, according to SDAR data. For condominiums and townhomes, the median May sales price was $380,000, a 5 percent climb over April and 9 percent above May 2015. The 1,120 condos that sold last month was 44 fewer than April and about the same

as May last year. The SDAR blamed a continuing inventory shortage on the lower sales numbers, but organization President Cory Shepard said he remained bullish on the local residential real estate market. “First-time home buyers have had the luxury of low mortgage interest rates for an extended period of time, making their mortgage payment lower than rent in many areas of the county,'' Shepard said. “However, buyers have to come prepared to make realistic offers and be willing to compete, in many cases, for their dream home.'' The most expensive single-family property sold in May was a five- bedroom, five-bath, 3,590-square-foot ocean-view home in La Jolla Shores -- built in 1930 -that went for $9.5 million.

Discounted interior design offer extended Sign up by June 30 for ‘Spring Spruce Up’ The American Society of Interior Designers’ 13th annual “Spring Spruce Up” fundraiser, which sends professional interior designers into people’s homes and offices for one-on-one professional interior design advice, has been extended. Spring Spruce Up appointments can be scheduled now through June 30 and the actual design sessions can happen later. Appointments are available for one or two hours at $85 per hour. “This popular event is designed to give people the personal experience of working with an ASID professional, said Natalia Trepchina-Worden, ASID, president of the San Diego chapter of ASID. “ASID has experts in all areas of design, such as space planning, color selection, art and furniture placement, indoor and

outdoor rooms, multigenerational living, universal design, and commercial design. Designers are hand selected to meet each client’s specific needs,” she explained. “Spring Spruce Up gives consumers who may have never worked with a professional interior designer an easy, affordable, and stress-free introduction.” She noted that designers are experts at saving clients money by eliminating errors and making smart design choices that reflect the tastes and budget of the client. ASID designers volunteer their time during Spruce Up; proceeds from the fundraiser support ASID’s educational programs. Designers from throughout San Diego County are participating. To discuss your needs and arrange a convenient time for the consultation, contact the ASID office at 858- 566-3345. All appointments are pre-paid. Information is also available at the chapter’s website www.ASIDSanDiego.org.

Boy, are you missing opportunities!

S

o here I was at a high-tech conference, talking with one of the speakers. Having invested thousands of dollars in travel, display, and collateral, as well as hundreds of hours developing his presentation, he was understandably disappointed in not finding many business opportunities there. Together we reviewed his website, where we found two articles about his firm in the Newsroom section. “How often have you sent out press releases to the industries you do business with?” I asked him. His response: “Twice.” I now knew two things: • Trade publications were interested in news about this company; and • The company wasn’t talking about themselves enough. When it comes to public relations efforts, most company owners trip over themselves trying to get free coverage by the business and consumer press. They typically forget about or are ignorant of the industry media outlets that would love to write about whatever they’re doing. Reaching out to these professional business-to-business (B2B) journals might open commercial accounts that are larger and more profitable. If only they knew about you. Over a single cup of coffee, this gentleman easily identified six industries from which he wanted customers. We immediately found 3-6 media

outlets from each industry and additional research turned up more later. This made for a simple solution: send out a press release to industry A’s media in May, industry B’s media in June, etc. Repeat the cycle every six months. Like other businesses, the internet has devastated the trade media community. Staffs are stretched thin, resources are tight, and well-written materials without cost get noticed…and published. Effective press efforts go beyond sending out accurate, solidly-written stories. It’s critical to follow-up with editors, columnists and bloggers to ensure they received your release. You want to determine if you should adapt the story to suit their needs. Don’t forget to ask if they want photography or artwork and to generally answer questions. In short, like any marketing effort, a trade media press campaign needs intelligent planning, professional implementation and thorough follow-through. Making trade media outreach part of your marketing mix should be a no-brainer. You’ll expand awareness of your company, increase professional buzz and improve sales prospects. Where I come from we call that a big success. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Are there other marketing tools you’re missing? Find out at www.askmrmarketing.com.
