Golf course owners asking for hotel ballot measure BY STEVE DREYER The owners of the Maderas Golf Club will be asking the Poway City Council to place on the November ballot a measure that, if passed, would clear the way for them to propose a hotel on the Old Coach Road property. Bob Manis, the city’s development services director, said that Sunroad Enterprises is interested in building a hotel of up to 240 rooms but that the specific plan covering the Old Coach area would first need to be amended to allow the use. That would require a citywide vote under Proposition FF. The specific plan covers land uses within the two Old Coach luxury residential developments and the golf course. If the measure passes, Sunroad would then be able to proceed with proposing what Manis called a “boutique hotel/resort.” The plans would be subject to a thorough City Council review, including public hearings, he said. The matter is scheduled for the council’s next meeting, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19. The 18-hole golf course, consistently ranked among the top 100 in the country, was opened in 2001 by Sunroad. On Tuesday, former Sunroad executive Tom Story, who now serves as a planning consultant, confirmed that the company would like to move forward with a hotel providing the council places the measure on the November ballot and that voters give it a simple majority approval. Interim Poway Unified superintendent selected BY STEVE DREYER AND EMILY SORENSEN A veteran school administrator was will begin work Aug. 1 as the Poway Unified School District’s interim superintendent. Edward Velasquez will will handle the responsibilities of Supt. John Collins, who has been on paid administrative leave since April 25. School board members placed Collins on leave while a board-hired auditing firm looked into his employment contract with the district. A special board meeting has been scheduled for July 11 where, according to district spokeswoman Christine Paik, the matters of the audit and the leave “will be concluded.” The board voted 4-1 on June 22 to hire Velasquez. Board member Andy Patapow voted in opposition without giving a reason. Velasquez retired in 2013 as superintendent of the Lynwood Unified School District in Montebello, a post he held for three years. Prior to that he was superintendent of the neighboring Montebello Unified School District for six years. His career with the Montebello district started in 1993 and included positions as assistant principal, intermediate school administrator, assistant superintendent, interim superintendent, chief of school police and superintendent. Since retiring, Velasquez has served four months in 2015 as interim superintendent of the San Ysidro School District and three months this year as interim superintendent of the Alpine Union School District. The

Alpine job ends this month. Velasquez said last week that if the board wants his assistance in finding a new superintendent, he has experience in that field and will be able to help. Edward Velasquez Velasquez will be paid $75 an hour for up to a maximum of 560 hours. He will receive no district benefits, according to his employment contract. As Velasquez lives in Chino, he will stay in a motel or hotel within the district that he will pay for on his own, his usual procedure when working as an interim superintendent, he said. Velasquez said he has been following PUSD since 2009, when he was working with San Ysidro School District on refinancing bonds. He said he heard about the Poway Unified School District and has been following news about the district ever since. "I had concerns (for the district) and I saw things that needed to be rectified," he said. His motivation for working as an interim superintendent following his retirement comes from his passion for helping children, said Velasquez. "I was one of those kids who should have fallen through the cracks," he said. "But I had some great role models. I really care about kids."

Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps raising funds for Pearl Harbor vets Funds will allow survivors to visit Pearl Harbor in December for a commemoration event BY EMILY SORENSEN The Rotary Club of Scripps-Poway is raising funds to send San Diego-area Pearl Harbor veterans, including 104-year-old Poway resident Ray Chavez, to the 75th anniversary commemoration in Hawaii in December. Called “Pearl Flight,” this is a collaborative partnership between the club and Personally Fit of Rancho Bernardo. Personally Fit is the gym where Chavez has been working out with a personal trainer for the last three years, which has left him healthy enough to make the long trip back to Hawaii, said Pauline Getz, club president. Getz said initially the club was interested in asking Chavez to serve as the honorary grand marshal in this year’s Poway Days parade after reading about him in an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune in March. When a friend contacted her, expressing interest in starting a non-profit organization to help send Chavez to the Pearl Harbor commemoration in December, Getz said the club’s scope moved beyond the parade. Getz said she told her friend not to start a non-profit just for one person, because if they opened the offer of taking Pearl Harbor veterans to others outside of Chavez, the Rotary’s non-profit could handle the fundraising. The club reached out to Personally Fit, which Getz said “loved the idea.” “They want to support Ray, and get the word out

Pearl Harbor veteran Ray Chavez was honored at the Padres Spring Training Kickoff Luncheon in February. (about their personal training programs that can be designed around the needs of the elderly),” said Getz. The club has identified two, possibly three other veterans who would like to travel back

to Pearl Harbor in December for the ceremony, which will include survivors, family members and support groups gathering to commemorate the 75th anniversary. It is working with the San

Diego Pearl Harbor Survivors Carnation Chapter 3 to identify possible survivors who would like to attend. Sending the veterans, plus a caregiver, as they are all over 90 years old, will cost between $2,500 and $5,000 per person, said Getz. This includes first-class airfare, which will be more comfortable for the veterans for the long flight to and from Hawaii. Recipients will receive reimbursement for their expenses related to attending the commemoration. They will be responsible for making their own arrangements. Pearl Flight will coordinate a welcome from members of a local Rotary Club that will attend to their needs on arrival and make sure they have transportation to their hotels, according to a press release from the club. The club and members of Personally Fit will have a booth at the Rancho Bernardo Spirit of the Fourth celebration, where Chavez will be a VIP guest in the parade. The booth will have information about Pearl Flight and will also be collecting donations. Getz said the club is reaching out to other local Rotary clubs and is looking into some other, low-key fundraising opportunities. “This is possibly the last time many of these veterans will be able to travel to Pearl Harbor,” said Getz. Donations to Pearl Flight can be made to the Poway Rotary Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable, non-profit organization. Contributions can be sent to P.O. Box 184, Poway, CA 92074.

RB street repair has resident questioning city’s planning Avenida Consentido work began three months ago BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK The process and length of time it is taking to fix a Bernardo Heights street has at least one Rancho Bernardo resident questioning the City of San Diego’s efficiency and planning. Joe Larkin, who lives on Avenida Consentido, has been monitoring the progress on his street daily since the project is right in front of his house. "There is such ineptitude and waste of money," Larkin said. "It’s crazy and just a shame." He said work began in April, when several houses over a crew replaced 50 to 60 feet of sewer pipe that runs under the middle of Avenida Consentido. Larkin said he welcomed the work since the road was "sagging" in the middle due to its clay composition and the likely settling of the sewer pipe under it. Since moving there 30 years ago, the pipe has never been replaced as far as Larkin can recall. Larkin explained that the soil in his neighborhood has caused problems for some homes and is the reason why his driveway has separated a bit from his home, but said his house does not have foundation problems like other residences have experienced over the years. The same condition is likely affecting the sewer pipe and road, he said. Larkin said he started questioning the city’s efficiency when after the first portion of sewer pipe was replaced, the crew did not return, but left pipes behind, giving the appearance that more work was planned. Several weeks later the

Joe Larkin on June 24 with the torn up section of street in front of his house on Avenida Consentido. After the city made sewer repairs and resurfaced the street this spring, the street was torn up again on June 20 to begin additional sewer line repairs, but he said no work continued the rest of the week. pipes disappeared. Sometime after that, Larkin said Avenida Consentido — like many other Bernardo Heights streets — received a new slurry seal. But it, like many adjacent streets, was not subsequently striped. That’s when he started calling around to find out when the work would be completed. On June 20, a crew returned to Avenida Consentido and ripped up a section in the

middle of his street, Larkin said. Some of the new trench was patched, the rest covered with large plates. "No parking" signs were placed to prevent vehicles from parking in front of his home and several of his neighbors’ homes, new sewer pipes were left nearby, as was a portable toilet. Larkin said he found out another 60-foot section of sewer pipe was to go in and questions why the whole project was not done at once.

Last week, he contacted City Councilman Mark Kersey’s office seeking answers and eventually the Rancho Bernardo News Journal when four days passed and no workers returned after the first day. "The whole street has been held captive by a lack of planning," he said, alleging this project is what is holding up the striping work for his and nearby streets. Gina Jacobs, Kersey’s spokeswoman, said the councilman’s staff has been looking into what happened. She said city staff told Kersey’s office that the street repairs were not a full slurry, but temporary repairs until the second half of the sewer work could be completed. Jacobs attributed the delays to staffing issues and said work should be completed by this Friday. She said crews do not typically leave a project before it is completed, but in this case needed to be pulled from the sewer project to do another job. She said if those they asked are incorrect, and a 60-foot section of new slurry sealed street was torn up to do more work under it, then it was "a small hiccup" to the system. According to Jacobs, the city restricts work from occurring for three years after a street gets a new slurry seal and for five years if it gets a new overlay. There is an exception for emergencies. "We are reviewing the situation to make sure it does not happen again," Jacobs said. Larkin said a crew returned on Monday (June 27) to start installing the sewer pipe and said he was told by a supervisor that the job will go into next week. After that another crew will come out to apply slurry seal to the repaired stretch of road.

Retiring PUSD middle and high school teachers BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK At least nine middle school and five high school teachers retired this month from Poway Unified School District. Among them are seven who have taught within the district for at least 25 years. Four of them — including a husband and wife who often taught at the same campuses — accepted an invitation to reflect on their careers and share their plans for retirement. Retiring elementary school teachers were profiled in the June 23 issue. ■ Karen McKenzie has been with PUSD for 37 years, starting as a substitute until hired to teach full-time. She taught at Black Mountain and Meadowbrook middle schools until becoming an original faculty member of Karen Bernardo Heights Middle McKenzie School when it opened in 1988. Most recently she has taught seventh grade humanities and been a seventh-grade co-team leader at Bernardo Heights. She earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and teaching credential from SDSU, and her masters in administration from United States International University. In 2015 she was the Chelsea’s Light Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year. McKenzie said she became a teacher because “Teaching was one of the few options for women when I was in college. I thought that I wanted to be a dental assistant until I had to put my hands into someone’s mouth. Teaching looked great after that. It turned out to be a wonderful choice for me. I loved seeing the kids everyday and always being surprised at the things that happen each day in the classroom. No two days are the same.” She said there are more students in each class now versus when she began and “more expectations of teachers and less time to accomplish those expectations.” When asked for a special memory, McKenzie said it was “working with such amazing, dedicated professionals at Bernardo Heights. The students change each year. Some come back to visit and most you never hear from again, but the BHMS Bobcat family was the constant in my life. That is what I will miss — my home away from home — my family.” As for her retirement plans, McKenzie said she is “going to turn off the alarm clock, leisurely drink a cup of coffee, read a book, garden, craft and take trips in the RV to see the grandkids in Minnesota.” She also will volunteer with Chelsea’s Light Foundation, “take advantage of whatever opportunities come my way (and) just enjoy life.” ■ Chris Carter has been with PUSD for 29 years, with the past 11 at Westview High where he was its athletic director and a counselor. He also taught and coached at Poway High for three years Chris Carter and Rancho Bernardo High for 15 years, with 11 of those as the Broncos’ head basketball coach.

Carter started his career at Downey Unified School District, where he taught for three years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physiology and chemistry plus his teaching credential from California State University Long Beach. Carter earned his master’s in counseling and guidance plus his pupil personnel services credential from Point Loma Nazarene University. His honors included being named Basketball Coach of the Year in 1992, Counselor of the Year in 2002 and Athletic Director of the Year for 2016. “My high school experiences as a student-athlete were influential in my career decision,” Carter said. “I enjoyed learning from my high school teachers and coaches, and I appreciated their teaching and coaching methods. I became a teacher and coach to also guide and support high school students and athletes who desire to become professionals and positive leaders in their communities.” Carter said technology has helped enhance the teaching process for teachers and students, but students “are most stressed to keep pace with social media circles, which impacts them positively and negatively.” As for a special memory, he said, “Being able to live and work in PUSD, where my children went to school and where I was able to work with my wife, Lorraine, throughout our careers has been special and unique.” His retirement plans include moving to Georgia where Carter and his wife “have been building our dream home on Lake Lanier.” He said they also plan to have their children and future grandchildren visit often. ■ Lorraine Carter has been with PUSD for 29 years, with the past 14 as a speech and language pathologist at Westview High. She previously worked at Bernardo Heights Middle School plus Poway, Mt. Carmel, Abraxas and Rancho Lorraine Bernardo high schools. At RB Carter she taught its first critical skills class, starting in 1991. During her 10 years there she also was a sophomore class adviser and founding adviser of its Best Buddies program. She earned her master of arts in communicative disorders and credential in clinical rehabilitative services with special classroom authorization in the field of language, speech and hearing from California State University Long Beach. Her honors have included being RBHS Teacher of the Year in the early ‘90s, various student recognitions at Westview and recently receiving a San Diego Council Administrators of Special Education service award. “I have always wanted to be a teacher and one of my first jobs was teaching preschool,” Carter said. “A speech therapist came to the school and did a speech and language screening of our students and I

Education is truly a pendulum that swings back and forth.” While Carter said she has “so many wonderful memories ... to numerous to share,” she added, “The people I have worked with throughout my career have taught me so much and I treasure each moment I have had with all of them. My children — who are now adults — attended schools in the PUSD or even the school I worked at, so they were always part of what I did. I have also had the privilege of working at the same schools as my husband (Chris) for most of my career.” She said their retirement plans are to move to Georgia so they can “begin the next phase of our lives living on a lake.” ■ Wendy Svenson has been with PUSD for 26 years, with the past seven as a speech language pathologist at Rancho Bernardo High School. She previously was a resource specialist, reading Wendy recovery teacher and/or Svenson speech pathologist at Pomerado, Painted Rock and Morning Creek elementary schools; Bernardo Heights Middle School and Poway High. She earned her bachelor’s degree in speech communication from California State University Fullerton and her master’s in teaching from Grand Canyon University. In 2013, Svenson received Lions Clubs International Leo Club Outstanding Adviser Service Award. “I always wanted to be a teacher from a very young age,” Svenson said. “I had a lot of respect for my teachers and appreciated the way they reached out and related to me. I had an opportunity to help in a communicatively handicapped special day class one summer when I was in high school. That was what focused my attention on special education, particularly on speech and language.” Svenson said technology has been one of the biggest changes since entering the profession in 1978. “I have seen the wonder of technology allow a nonverbal student to express their wants and needs, share their feelings and increase their social interaction using an iPad with an app installed that allows them to have a ‘voice,’” she said. Among her many special memories, one that Svenson said stands out was when a seventh grade boy struggling with reading thanked her for trying to make reading easier for him. Svenson said she and her husband will remain in San Diego, she will travel off season; garden, cook and read more; sleep in and volunteer with organizations that deal with society’s

Home burglars enter guilty pleas (CNS) - Two men who broke into homes in Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch, La Jolla, Del Mar and Mira Mesa, along with two juveniles during a heat wave last year, pleaded guilty Monday to 19 burglary and robbery charges. Antonio Kresic, 22, and Keith Lashaun Thomas, 20, will be sentenced Sept. 20. Each faces up to 29 years and eight months in state prison. Deputy District Attorney Jim Koerber said the defendants removed and cut screens to

break into residences during a hot spell last year. Some residents left their windows open and the defendants were able to get in that way, the prosecutor said. The crime spree began Sept. 21 and ended Oct. 7. Some of the stolen property -- including credit cards, computer thumb drives and gaming systems -- was recovered and returned to the owners, police said. The two teens are being prosecuted in juvenile court.

Abraxas celebration Soroptimist Poway recently sponsored the annual Abraxas High School Grad Nite celebration for the graduating seniors. Attending seniors and staff enjoyed pizza and sodas. Then they went on to the Miramar Speed Circuit. Club members helping at the event included Jane Marsh, Lynn Flanagan, Enid Glick, April Mitchell and Karen Dunn.

EDITORIAL

More clout for planning boards Members of the Rancho Bernardo Planning Board are absolutely correct in asking the City of San Diego for more opportunities to comment on upcoming development projects in their community. A letter signed by Chairman Mike Lutz and endorsed by the city-required panel points out repeated examples of the city planning staff approving significant new construction in Rancho Bernardo without a chance for planning board members, or the public, to review and comment. That puts the volunteer board in a difficult and powerless position. No local review is required when an upcoming project is deemed by the city as “ministerial” in nature. While that might imply the project would likely not be a big deal that is often clearly not the case. Some recent examples: • The razing and rebuilding of the former Elephant Bar so it could become Phil’s BBQ. “This work, although well publicized, was never subjected to resident review and has resulted in signage and parking issues that could have been better addressed,” Lutz wrote. • A remodel of the Rancho Bernardo Town Center and addition of a 5,000-square-foot building, which the board members learned about by reading the Rancho Bernardo News Journal. • The razing of the former Traveler’s Inn and Hooters restaurant to make way for the Sharp Rees-Stealy medical complex. “This project is very large and has major visual and traffic impacts and yet ... was not reviewed to any extent by the Planning Board and affected residents,” Lutz wrote. Lutz said the Rancho Bernardo Community Plan “specifically states the City is to seek input from the Planning Board of such matters” and it “details the (board’s) residential, commercial and industrial objectives ... Yet even with this, (city officials) bypassed us, essentially making it a ministerial project.” The problem is not limited to Rancho Bernardo. Residents in Point Loma last week went public over their concerns that the Peninsula Community Planning Board was not contacted about a four-story duplex project that they say is completely out of character with their neighborhood. The project has the city’s blessing. We would like to see City Councilman Mark Kersey get involved and take a leadership role in giving local planning boards more control over new development. It might not be easy changing long-standing city rules, but it’s a task that needs to be done.

OUR READERS WRITE Be educated In response to Ted Sandall’s June 16 letter headlined “Common sense needed,” I would like to provide some education about transgender students. For the true transgender, it is not a decision about someone “feeling” that they want to use one restroom over another. It is a matter true self-identity. No sane person would “decide” to take on potential hate, ridicule, bullying, prejudice and isolation that comes with living their lives authentically. When it comes to changing morals, it would be a much better world if we all chose to educate ourselves about people who are just different than us, live with love, respect and compassion for each other, and realize that good old common sense no longer serves our changing world. ‘A new low’ This is my first letter to the editor in 30 years. I am so disgusted by the Amy Roost column of June 6 that I am motivated to write. With this column Amy Roost has reached a new low in her stupidity. Why do you print her stupidity? Jim Ralph Rancho Bernardo

Orlando failures Our country failed. The FBI failed. The Florida governor failed. The Orlando mayor failed. The Orlando police chief failed. Off-duty policemen at site failed. Yes, it was a two-story, sizeable building. Yes, there was only one shooter.

Yes, 320 souls were at risk. Yes, there was a three-hour deadly delay. All unacceptable. Unfortunately, this is the norm. We weren’t ready. We must become empowered, proactive and personally brave without fear of recrimination, or many more will die. We must act immediately and decisively. Herb Tuttle Rancho Bernardo

Assertion is wrong In Mr. Lyles’ June 16 article on gun control, he makes the old paranoid assertion that President Obama wants to take away our guns. President Obama said at his town hall meeting on Jan. 7, "What I've said consistently throughout my presidency is I respect the Second Amendment, I respect the right to bear arms. I respect people who want a gun for self-protection, for hunting, for sportsmanship." I challenge Mr. Lyles to point to a speech by President Obama declaring that he wants to take all legally owned guns away from law-abiding citizens. Mr. Lyles' uninformed pronouncement that the only "workable solution" to gun violence is a "macro-strategy to combat the kind of global terrorism currently being spawned by radical Islamic jihadists" completely ignores the fact that most gun violence in this country has nothing to do with jihadists. Hasn't he ever heard of the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre, the killings at the theater in Aurora, Colorado, or the thousands shot dead in separate incidents? Mr. Lyles must never watch the news if he believes that "Mr. Obama refuses to wage war on those who aspire to kill us." Did he forget that on President Obama's orders, Bin Laden was killed? Has he not heard how many al-Qaida and ISIS members have been killed by American drone strikes? SEE LETTERS, A13

Get Real BY DICK LYLES

It’s not enough to merely rebel

I

n asserting that people should periodically shake things up because, “It prevents the degeneracy of government and nourishes a general attention to public affairs,” Thomas Jefferson went on to say, “… a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.” His words ring as true today as they did more than two centuries ago. Future historians may very well argue that one of the most astounding phenomena of 2016 is the number of political rebellions the year has spawned. Few predicted the Brexit outcome at the beginning of the year. Yet this grassroots rebellion by voters against the political elites in both Britain and Europe — perhaps even the

world — will change the course of world history more than any other event of this decade. In America, the rise of the candidacies of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders has been equally as astonishing. Even though the solutions and strategies of both candidates are roundly criticized – Sanders’ for being so socialist they’ll never work in America and Trump’s for being shallow and lacking detail — their campaigns, along with that of anti-establishment candidate Ted Cruz, garnered almost two-thirds of the votes cast in the primary elections this year. A similar rebellion on a much smaller scale is taking place in the Poway Unified School District. Once a symbol of excellence in school district governance, PUSD leadership, which includes the

school board and the superintendent, is now devoid of respect and generally held in disdain. Once held in high esteem as a well-led and well-managed district, PUSD now has the distinction of being a “perennial favorite” to win the Golden Fleece Award from the San Diego Taxpayers Association. Our teachers achieve excellence in the classroom in spite of, rather than because of PUSD leadership. The much-needed PUSD leadership rebellion is different from Brexit and the presidential election in one very important way. The difference here is the emergence of a group of responsible citizens who have banded together to ensure the rebellion achieves a positive outcome. Demonstrating the unique brand of responsibility that parents and teachers in our district have always shared, The Coalition for Effective School Board Leadership was organized to ensure that results of the district’s rebellion actually solve the existing problems of the district. Coalition Chair Mary Andrews has relied on her strong background in organization development and leadership to work with her team to develop a process to vet potential school board candidates against six criteria. These include having high standards of personal

A No-Brainer BY DON HIGGINSON

Get the facts on sales tax hike On the old TV series “Dragnet,” Sargent Joe Friday became famous for saying, “Just the facts, ma’am.” For some reason society has gotten away from actual facts. A fact confirmed through surveys and focus groups is that a majority of folks choose to live in Poway because of the reputation of the Poway Unified School District and our “great”’ schools (a topic for a future column). Another fact is that Poway has well-maintained local roads (just travel from city to city in your car for confirmation). This caused me to pause recently when I read that the Poway City Council was opposed to a potential county wide one-half cent sales tax increase measure to raise $18 billion dollars for our regional transportation needs over the next 40 years. First, I heard some are opposed because it is a tax increase. For those that are philosophically opposed to any tax increase, get over it. The things we need all have a price tag. Call it a fee, assessment or tax, but it is still money from our pockets. Next, I heard the argument that these future infrastructure transportation improvements don’t do enough for Poway. So, to echo Joe Friday, “Just the facts, Ma’am”. Fact: From the original TransNet program’s inception (April 1988) through March 2016, Poway has

received approximately $32.7 million in TransNet local street funding. These funds have enabled Poway to repave streets, fill potholes and build new local roads. Fact: Poway uses an eight-year rotation of street overlays and slurry seals. Without TransNet local road funds we wouldpoway most likely be on a 12-year cycle. Fact: A total of $10 million in TransNet funds leveraged an additional $27 million in matching funds to complete Poway Road and Scripps Poway Parkway improvements. Fact: Poway will receive an additional $1.15 million in the first full year of funding under the new measure to be used for our local roads. Another argument I hear is that the new measure would benefit other parts of the county more than North County. Let’s not be quick to forget that we in Poway have been enjoying the benefits from the I-15 improvements and managed lanes system partially funded by TransNet monies, while other parts of the county (who helped approve the original TransNet measure) have seen delays to some of their projects. Fact: Regional transportation investments are not a zero sum game. Investments made in South County can benefit those who live in North County and vice versa. Fact: Commute patterns show that the majority of people do not

work where they live. Sixty-nine percent of the 1.4 million employed residents in our region work outside the sub-region they live in. Fact: In Poway the situation is more drastic. Only 10 percent of 22,600 employed Poway residents work within Poway. The remaining 90 percent commute to areas outside of Poway for work using the transportation system. One final fact and a basic reality check: Any proposed transportation measure only survives (as TransNet has) when balanced with the needs of transit, highways and local road advocates. No one group wins singularly but we all do in the collective. Poway will never get a “fair share” of transit (bus/trolley) monies because of our demographics (land use and medium income), and that’s O.K. As we begin to witness cars becoming more fuel efficient (electric) we will see less and less revenue generated from gas taxes (about $1.1 million for Poway this year). It seems like a “no brainer’ to me that in addition to regional improvements, any new street money is better than none. Higginson served on the Poway City Council for 22 years. He is a former vice-chairman of the San Diego Association of Governments, the agency proposing the sales tax increase.

integrity, being able to build consensus and understanding fiscal responsibility, among others. I met with Ms. Andrews and former Poway High School Principal Scott Fischer, who is helping with the coalition. I’m convinced their vetting process and approach will help competence override politics in picking who will lead the district going forward. Now it is up to the rest of us to step up and get equally as involved. Our personal actions won’t affect Brexit. As Californians our influence on the presidential election may be a fore drawn conclusion. But together we can have significant impact on what happens in the PUSD election. The outcome of this election will affect both the education and prosperity of our region for years to come. I encourage everyone to check out the coalition, do your own homework on the school board elections and support candidates who will restore PUSD to greatness. It’s not enough to merely rebel. We must ensure that the outcome of the rebellion benefits the common good, our communities and our children. Lyles, a Poway resident, is a management consultant and best-selling author. Reader comments, either online or through letters to the editor, are encouraged.

FROM LETTERS, A12 It’s easy to sit safely at home and say we don’t need any gun control. Would you feel the same if your child and his entire class were massacred by someone using an assault rifle? Vernon Thomas Poway

Happy reader I'll bet there were a few smiles and a tear or two shed after reading Barry Cronin's June 16 column "The gleam in a man's eye.” Just wanted to thank him for sharing his story; it made my week. I, too, see myself as a storyteller and, yes, being Irish helps. Also, columnist Dick Lyles, the problem solver, is doing what Washington has forgotten how to do, use common sense. Thank him for me. Gail Cochrane Poway

A place to start Regarding the June 16 Dick Lyles commentary on gun control I wish to ask him a question: What exactly is his “macro-strategy to combat global terrorism”? Carpet bombing, dropping $100 bills over Syria, calling in business consultants to come up with more buzz words, passing out free assault weapons for duck hunters? Please advise us on how to stem the progression of mass shootings and we will be glad to pay your bill. By the way, I own guns, believe in the Second Amendment and am a Republican, so don’t label me a bleeding heart liberal. I’m not

smart enough to have a solution either, but I won’t blame anyone for at least trying something. If it does not work, then try something else. Maybe banning people that are on the no-fly list from buying guns would be a good place to start. Al Finley Poway

Making tough decisions Regarding Allen Hemphill’s June 26 column “Taking aim at ‘soft’ targets,” I understand the point he was making. However, in my opinion, his opening comments damaged our police and fire departments. I am sure you remember how 343 firefighters lost their lives in New York City while attempting to rescue the occupants of the Twin Towers. As for police, in the recent Orlando nightclub incident they had information that explosives could be in the building and that the shooter had placed explosive vests on the hostages. Had the police stormed the nightclub, explosions and shootings could have taken place. If the police had returned fire, hostages and others could have died as well. Public safety incident commanders have to make very hard life-and-death decisions. I am very sorry for the wounded who may have “bled out” (Hemphill’s words.) Imagine how the incident commanders must feel, having made the calculated decisions deemed necessary facing the conditions presented. Rich Schuller Rancho Bernardo

She estimated that would be within a couple of weeks. Founded in 1993, Emergency Animal Rescue trains volunteers to

Rancho Bernardo high school tennis coach Mike Parrinello was recently honored as a state Coach of the Year.

Longtime RB High coach earns honor Parrinello named Coach of the Year BY DANA LOHR Early in the season, when Rancho Bernardo High boys and girls tennis coach Mike Parrinello went to call in a score, he was not expecting a congratulations. But what he received was that and much more. Parrinello, a retired Spanish teacher, was named the California Coaches Association Coach of the Year. He was honored to receive such a prestigious award, describing the whole experience as “surreal.” Parrinello was not only recognized for the amount of time he has dedicated to the program, but also for the passion he displays for his student athletes. He has been with Rancho Bernardo since its opening in 1990. He began his coaching career at the junior varsity level before becoming the varsity coach in 1995. Parrinello has been recognized as the CIF San Diego Section Coach of the Year three times. He was also recently honored by Rancho Bernardo with a “Special Service Award” for his 25 years of coaching at the school. Parrinello has tallied up an astounding record of 361 wins to just 88 losses

in his time. The Broncos, who have made it to the section finals nine times and quarterfinals twice, have won section championships three times under the dedicated coach. Parrinello attributes his coaching success to the value he has set on teaching his students more than athletics, but life lessons as well. “Player development is the most important to me,” he said. “To help them go through their high school years and develop, not only as a player, but as a person. I want to help them become better as a whole. I want the whole kid.” In developing his athletes, there is a strong emphasis Parrinello puts on teamwork, especially as a coach of such an individual sport as tennis. “An athlete may be done playing tennis after their four years of high school, so I want to teach them while they are here how to be part of a team, work with other people and communicate,” he said. He stresses the importance of his athletes building relationships with each other, encouraging them in working towards a common goal. “To me, seeing the players open up with their SEE PARRINELLO, B3

Everything was going great this summer for Kevin Newman. The No. 1 pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2015 was hitting .366 with Single-A Bradenton of the Florida State League this season when he was hit by a pitch. That pitch struck the former Poway High and Arizona shortstop near the left eye, fracturing several orbital bones. Although he avoided surgery, he was shelved for a few weeks. “I’ve been hit before, but never near the eye,’’ the 6-foot-1, 180-pounder said. “The ball looks really big when it’s coming at your eye like that. “My phone was blowing up by the time I got back into the locker room. My parents knew about it almost before it happened. “I’ve played baseball for 18 years or so and never had that happen. I’m hoping it doesn’t happen

PHS grad Kevin Newman, shown here during his time with the University of Arizona, was recently promoted to Double-A by the Pittsburgh Pirates. again.’’ Newman is no longer with Bradenton. Following several sessions of facing live pitching to get over any lingering fears, the Pirates promoted him to the Double-A Altoona Curve in Pennsylvania. “I haven’t flinched,’’ Newman said. “It wasn’t like they were throwing at my head or anything but just trying to get me back

on track.’’ That track is what Newman, who turns 23 on Aug. 4, hopes will one day lead him to Pittsburgh and his major-league debut. Through Sunday, Newman is hitting .333 with four RBIs in six games with Altoona. “I dream about my first day in the major leagues all the time,’’ Newman said. “But I don’t lose sleep over

it. The whole thing is out of my hands. “I’m really only as close as the Pirates think I am. All I can do is show up every day and play hard. I can live with myself if I do that.’’ Newman’s first pro season in 2015 was, in his own mind, less than thrilling. After starting off the season hitting .226 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 38 games with West Virginia, playing in Morgantown, in short season Single-A, Newman bounced back with a .306 average with eight RBIs in 23 games for West Virginia in Charleston in full season Single-A. Even though Newman felt his transition season after signing out of Arizona following his junior year was not as productive as he’d liked, it was good enough for the Pirates to send him to their advanced Single-A team in Bradenton. RBHS shines at awards ceremony State tournament could be coming for baseball, softball BY STEVE BRAND In this age of specialization, multisport athletes are rare. That’s just one of the things that make Kearny’s Takoda Browne and Rancho Bernardo’s Nia Akins special. Their high school athletic seasons just ran one after the other with little opportunity to catch their breath. They were so outstanding they were selected the 2015-16 Athletes of the Year by the combined votes of the public, the San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Diego Hall of Champions. Both were recently honored at the 10th Prep Athletes Award Gala along with the coaches of the year Liz Ladley of West Hills (gymnastics) and Tristan McCoy of Rancho Bernardo (football). Here is a look at each:

SPACIOUS RV PARKING

BY JOHN MAFFEI The end of the high school year is a mindboggling cornucopia of proms, award nights, final exams — and in the near future — maybe baseball and softball state playoffs. “Both sports are in line for state championships,” said Ron Nocetti, associate executive director of the California Interscholastic Federation. Changes, however, will need to be made to the current schedule. Eastlake High played a San Diego Section Open Division baseball semifinal playoff game at and held graduation ceremonies later that evening. Cathedral Catholic graduated at USD in the morning and returned in the day to play Eastlake for the Open Division championship. Scripps Ranch and San Marcos played at USD for the Division II baseball championship. Both schools had prom that evening. Girls in formals started showing up at Fowler Park around 5 p.m. USD officials graciously agreed to let the players shower and change into tuxedos after the game. Nothing worse than a girl in a formal heading to prom with a smelly baseball player with dirt on his arms. “Right now, under the current school calendar, we don’t have the time for a state playoff in these sports,” said Jerry Schniepp, San Diego Section commissioner. So the proposal is to move the school calendar statewide up a week starting with 2017-18. The 2016 football season kicks off Aug.

HAYNE PALMOUR IV/U-T

Poway High celebrating a win over Torrey Pines during the 2016 season. 26. Practice starts in late July. Moving up the school calendar a week would mean starting the football season around Aug. 20. Basketball season would also move up a week. “I’m a huge baseball fan, but to fit a state baseball and softball playoff in would mean thousands of athletes in other sports would be effected,” said Cathedral Catholic football coach Sean Doyle. “I’m not sure how practical that is.” Baseball and softball would also have to give up something. Playing three games a week to shorten those seasons by a week to fit in a state playoff is one suggestion, but a number of San Diego schools already play three games a week in the league season. “I wasn’t happy with my first season with what I got done after playing a full college season too,’’ Newman said. “I struggled more than I ever have. I knew it would be tough. “I’m more prepared for everything this year. I got a whole spring training in.’’ While there are mostly serious moments for minor leaguers trying to stay on track and moving toward a shot at playing in the majors, there are those humorous moments that make the journey worthwhile as well. Newman recalled the game — it was off day for him — when the batter lined a foul ball into the dugout, hitting the pitching coach walking down the tunnel to the locker room. “The entire dugout was laughing so hard,’’ Newman said. “The pitching coach was the only one not laughing.’’

team and being able to see who they are as a person is one of the best parts of being a coach,” Parrinello said. One of Parrinello's goals as a coach is to close the gap between varsity and JV, creating a close-knit team. “I want these kids to feel like a family and know that their team has their backs,” he explains. “We win as a team and we lose as a team.” Parrinello also stresses the importance of academics in his coaching style. “Academics go hand-in-hand, that’s what’s most important,” he said. His coaching philosophy revolves around “student athlete,” stressing “student” first and the importance of

FROM STATE, B2 double-elimination playoffs in baseball and softball might be cut back to a single-elimination format to shorten the playoffs. “Right now, nothing is off the table,” Nocetti said. “We’ve never had a state playoff in soccer because Northern California and Southern California played in different seasons. “Northern California is coming in line with Southern California, so we’ll have a state playoff in soccer. “Baseball and softball might have to start small. Things are still in the planning stage. We might go with Southern California and Northern California regional playoffs to start.”

academics in developing a student’s future. “Everything is a balance,” he said. “To do well at both it takes work, commitment and management of time. Academics is one thing, sports and athletics are another. That what makes the balance perfect.” When Parrinello is not on the court coaching boys and girls tennis, he can be found surfing or playing a round of golf. Although it may sound like “the life,” he often misses working with his students as a teacher as well. “For me, my fun is being with the kids,” he said. “That’s what is fun, that’s what keeps me young and hopefully that shows in my teaching and coaching.” Lohr is a freelance writer

Spring sports like swimming and track have state finals, but those aren’t teams sports at the state level. A school with a great swimming or track program might send five athletes to a state meet. “I’m not opposed to a state playoff, but I don’t like all the divisions,” said veteran Rancho Bernardo baseball coach Sam Blalock. “If they do this, they need to keep it small with just the elite teams — at least at the start.” So yes, there would probably be fewer teams and fewer divisions at the start. Facilities wouldn’t be a problem. Both ends of the state have great college fields for baseball and softball. Maffei writes for the San Diego Union-Tribune

She fared just as well in track, winning the section 800-meter title before qualifying for the state championships in the event where, after helping to set the pace for most of the race, she finished 12th. The other finalists were Calvin Christian’s Sara Wagenveld (volleyball, track) and Bishop’s Destiny Littleton (basketball).

Male Athlete of the Year

It’s one thing to be first team All-Section in a single sport, but the Komets senior earned the honor for football and basketball. He didn’t slow down in the spring, running for Kearny’s track team. Although he enjoys all three sports, it’s obvious which one he favors. “I have a passion for basketball,” said Browne, who transferred to Kearny from Mississippi before his sophomore season. “I have a basketball IQ and playing on the same team for three years with many of my teammates, it was great when we’d know exactly what the other guy was going to do before they did it.” Leading the Komets to section

Division I Championship this year, Browne averaged 10.9 points a game for Kearny (31-4). Before that, he rushed for 1,559 yards and 17 touchdowns en route to accumulating 2,559 all-purpose yards in football. The other finalists were Foothills Christian’s T.J. Leaf (basketball) and La Costa Canyon’s Mickey Moniak (baseball).

Male Coach of the Year

When he went 1-9 two straight years, McCoy admits he was wondering what he had to do to turn around the Broncos fortunes. As it turned out, he just needed to keep doing what worked and after going 10-3 in 2014, he hit the jackpot last season, posting a 13-2 record that included a state Division III bowl championship victory over Atherton Sacred Heart Prep.

Female Coach of the Year

Although she has been the gymnastics coach at West Hill for five years, success has followed her every year. Over that time she has placed first in the section twice, second twice and third the other time. In 2016 her Wolf Pack girls used the optional all-around performance by freshman Tessa Anderson to win the team title by less than two points, 224.450-222.600. Brand is a freelance writer.

RBBA mixer held at new restaurant Rancho Bernardo Business Association held its June 21 mixer at Le Bistro de Louisa, which recently opened in the former Bernard’O Restaurant location. Upon retirement, Bernard’O owners Bernard and Diana Mougel sold their French-themed fine dining restaurant to Thomas and Victorine Philipps who have moved here from France. The Philipps have made the new restaurant — named in honor of Thomas’ maternal grandmother — a bit more casual and expanded the menu to offer French and Italian-inspired cuisine. During the mixer, Bernard Mougel received proclamations from City Councilman Mark Kersey, County Supervisor Dave Roberts and state Assemblyman Brian Maienschein to honor his years of community involvement. See more photos in the photo gallery at PomeradoNews.com.

Rancho Bernardo freshmen wrestlers Rico Kido-Doty and Nikolas Rizzo, who received prizes for selling the most duckies among their team mates for RBBA’s Rubber Ducky Race, with their coach, Joe Eddie Terribilini. The coach accepted a donation for the team from RBBA that recognized his students’ sales efforts.

BALIN,

a 5-year-old Border Terrier/Chihuahua mix, is looking for a loving home. He’s been a bit shy but is slowly learning to be more outgoing. Balin may be a little slow to warm up, but if you are patient and loving, he will be the most amazing companion! He was a bit of an escape artist in his previous home, so his new family will have to make sure he is safe and secure in his new environment. Balin is available for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus located at 3450 East Valley Parkway. To learn more about making him part of your family, please call (760) 888-2275.

clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Median San Diego County home price climbs in May (CNS) - The median price of a home in San Diego County rose by 6.8 percent in May, compared with the same month a year ago, while the number of homes sold jumped by 5.7 percent, a real estate information service announced. According to CoreLogic, the median price of a San Diego County home was $490,000 last month, up from $459,000 in May 2015. A total of 4,033 homes were sold in the county, up from 3,816 during the same month the previous year.A total of 22,466 new and resale houses and condos changed hands in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties last month, according to CoreLogic. That was up 5.6 percent from 21,274 in

March and up 3.3 percent from 21,754 in May 2015. The median price of a Southern California home was $459,500 in May, up 0.7 percent from $456,500 in April and up 6.9 percent from $430,000 in May 2015. “May home sales picked up a bit following a relatively weak start to the spring home-buying season in April, while last month's median sale price inched closer to its all-time high set in 2007,'' said Andrew LePage, a research analyst for CoreLogic. “In some ways the market continues to edge toward normalcy. Distressed sales are the lowest in nearly nine years and the investor share of purchases is the lowest in about six years -- closer to thelong-term average.''

Edelweiss Bakery offers old-world charm in modern era BY EMILY SORENSEN Looking for a custom wedding cake, or just some delicious treats? Try Edelweiss Bakery at 11639 Duenda Road in Rancho Bernardo. The bakery has been delivering its unique, homemade European cakes and pastries to the community since it opened in 1981. Owned and operated by Gerry and Lynn Lawrie, Edelweiss Bakery offers everything from custom-made wedding cakes to cookies, pastries and more, all handmade from quality ingredients at the bakery. “We’re a full-service bakery,” said Lynn Lawrie. “We might be the only full-service bakery left in San Diego. We’re in the category of an older style of bakery. We’re a modern, old-fashioned bakery.” A full-service bakery is a bakery that offers a complete range of products, as opposed to a bakery that might specialize a specific range of products, such as cupcakes or only sells cakes. Edelweiss Bakery offers custom wedding cakes, with a consultant available to guide couples through the process. Cake tasting is complementary. While the bakery has a wide variety of cake designs available, couples are free to bring their own color swatches, photos, invitations and ideas to the tasting for inspiration. “We’re now doing some second generation wedding cakes,” said Lynn Lawrie. Special occasion cakes are also available, with a wide variety of cake flavors including white cake Bavarian cream and raspberry chocolate cake with chocolate mousse. Other options include carrot cake, red velvet, fruit-topped flan, German chocolate,

Gerry and Lynn Lawrie, owners of Edelweiss European Bakery in Rancho Bernardo. Black Forest, marble cake and fresh fruit. Several varieties of frosting, including whip cream, butter cream, chocolate ganache and marzipan are also available. The bakery’s regular menu is also extensive, offering over 100 items ranging from breads to cookies and pastries. Some popular

sellers for Edelweiss Bakery include German apple ring cake; “Russian Rock” cookies, which contain walnuts and raisins; Bobby Cakes, which are a rich butter cookie layered with raspberry and almond filling, topped with a sweet butter crumb topping; Sara Berharts, a type of almond cookie topped with homemade chocolate ganache; and apple strudel. The Lawries credit the success of their baked goods to the fresh ingredients and the fact that everything is made in store. “We bake everything from scratch,” said Gerry Lawrie. “Everything is authentic. We make a vanilla custard here at the bakery for eclairs. We use fresh eggs, butter and milk.” The store is also still family-owned and operated, and has had as many as four generations working under its roof at one time, said Lynn Lawrie. The bakery was originally started by Gerry Lawrie and his brother in 1967 in Darien, Connecticut. Gerry Lawrie said his brother was a child apprentice to a baker in Germany. In 1981, Gerry Lawrie said, the family moved out to San Diego for the weather and re-opened the shop. The shop’s name comes from the edelweiss flower, which grows in the Alps during the spring. “When courting, a guy will go up the mountain and pick an edelweiss flower for the girl,” said Gerry Lawrie. “The best flowers grow at the highest altitude, so the young lady can tell how hard her suitor worked to get the flower. We were striving for quality, and wanted to be associated with the hard-working suitors.” Edelweiss Bakery is open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Mondays. For a full menu and more information, call 858-487-4338 or visit www.edelweissbakerysandiego.com.
