It’s time to celebrate the progress of the renovations at the Poway Library. The first phase of the longdelayed renovations — a metal canopy over the large outside patio — was installed last week. The library will be celebrating with a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11 at the library, 13137 Poway Road. The celebration will include remarks by San Diego County Library Director José Aponte; the unveiling of a special collection honoring the late Liz Hildreth, a former member of the library staff and advocate; refreshments and entertainment. This event is open to the public. The fence that has surrounded the space for nearly seven months was taken down Tuesday morning, allowing about 300 people to enjoy the shade during the librar y’s summer reading program. “It’s going to be really nice,” said Head Librarian Penny Taylor. Old Fashioned Fourth, fireworks in Poway on Saturday BY EMILY SORENSEN The City of Poway is offering a full day of fun activities for the Fourth of July on Saturday. The day will begin with the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July and conclude with fireworks at Poway High School. The Old-Fashioned Fourth of July will begin at 10 a.m., and continue through 4 p.m. at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road. This free celebration will feature live music, old-fashioned games, arts and crafts, food, family fun and, of course, the return of wily train robbers as you ride the park’s 1907 Baldwin steam engine. Shuttle services to and from the event will be offered, starting at 9:30 a.m. and running until 4:30 p.m. Shuttle locations are at the Poway Adult School

at 13626 Twin Peaks Road, and Poway City Hall at 13325 Civic Center Drive. Tasty treats and rides on the train will be available for a nominal fee. All other activities are free. Some of the treats available for sale include crepes, fries, Kona Ice and Boba tea. Several local clubs and organizations will be selling food as well, including a barbecue lunch from the Poway Lions Club for $5 (a hot dog, chips and a soda); cotton candy, popcorn, iced tea and bottled water from the Heritage Dancers; and the Poway Woman’s Club will be selling root beer floats, ice cream sundaes, bottled water and pie a la mode. The Heritage Museum and the Nelson House will be open for viewing during the event as well, so come check out their patriotic displays. The Heritage Museum will be holding a flea market. The Farmer’s Market will also be open on Midland

A city official this week said that an estimated 550,000 gallons of drinking water were dumped out of a city reservoir on June 9 because the water was no longer safe to drink. The decision to release the water from the Blue Crystal reservoir into a nearby canyon was made after it was determined that transporting it by tanker truck back to Lake Poway for treatment and redistribution was not feasible, said Assistant City Manager Tina White. The city sometimes experiences water quality problems at the Blue Crystal reservoir, located off Highway 67 in the eastern portion of the city, White said. Built in 1981, the 700,000-gallon reser voir is not highly used, White said. Decreased demand for water due to residential water conservation efforts have exacerbated efforts to keep water quality within state regulatory limits for chloramines. “The city makes every effort to avoid draining reservoirs,” White said. “These efforts include moving water around in the system,

stabilizing it with chemicals at the tank or perhaps capturing the water in a water truck and transporting it back to the lake where it can be mixed with raw water and treated and delivered again. Unfortunately, we found it necessary to drain the reservoir, clean the tank, and refill the reservoir to bring up the chloramine to maintain regulatory compliance.” The amount released from the reservoir represented roughly 1.6 acre feet of water, enough to supply three families of four people each for a year. The city has 19 water reservoirs. White said she thought it had been at a least one year since the city had released water from one. A previous practice of releasing a press statement prior to a water release has been discontinued, White said. Poway is under a state mandate to decrease its water consumption by 32 percent when compared to 2013 levels. The City Council will be holding a public workshop on water conservation measures and the possible impact of the drought on future water rates at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16 in the council chambers.

San Diego Police Department is looking for volunteers for its Crisis Intervention Team. Interventionists respond at the request of police officers to scenes where a traumatic event has taken place. They are there to provide emotional and logistical support to citizens in their time of need. Interventionists respond to calls of death, traffic accidents, robberies, natural disasters and more. Training will begin in September and class sizes are limited. If interested, send an email to crisis@pd.sandiego.gov. Include your name, address, phone number and date of birth. The application deadline is July 16. Applicants must be 21 years or older, have a valid California driver’s license, no felony convictions, not currently be on probation and have no recent drug use. Additional restrictions and requirements apply.

Survey: PUSD offers good value for dollar The Poway Unified School District placed higher than any other school district in the county in a new “Best School Districts for Your Buck” survey conducted by an online financial site. NerdWallet researched and ranked 375 school districts in California. Criteria used included affectability (median home values and selected homeowner costs) standardized test scores, dropout rates and class sizes. The PUSD placed 51st on the list. The sur-

vey findings said the district had a median home value of $550,100, an average SAT test score of 1,688, an average 2012-13 school year Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) score of 386, a 95.2 percent graduation rate and a student-teacher ratio of 26.6 to one. The San Dieguito Union High School District was the next San Diego County district listed, at No. 114. Top honors went to the Davis Joint Unified School District.

Volunteers, donations sought for Poway Host Town activities BY STEVE DREYER

Gymnast María Belén Ortiz Intriago of Ecuador will represent her country at the Special Olympics World Games. She won four gold medals and one silver medal at the 2014 National Macas games, which qualified her for Los Angeles.

Community volunteers are being recruited by the City of Poway to assist during the July 21-24 visit by two teams headed to the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. As a designated “Host Town,” Poway will be housing and entertaining nearly 100 athletes, coaches and officials from Ecuador and Togo. The city has established an on-line volunteer registration site that can be accessed through the city’s official site, www. poway.org. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, ranging from assisting with the serving of breakfasts, being “bowling buddies” and carnival game operators to providing French and Spanish translation services and first aid help. Financial suppor t is also being sought from the community to help cover visit-related expenses. The two delegations are in for a full three days of activities, according to Robin Bettin, the city’s director of community services. The 61-member team from Ecuador is expected to arrive in Poway during the late afternoon or early evening of July 21, Bettin said. The 29-member Togo team is not expected until the early morning hours of July 22. The

teams will be housed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in the Poway Business Park. The morning of July 22 will include an exercise and yoga period at Community Park, followed by bowling and a pizza lunch at the Poway Fun Bowl. Lake Poway will be the setting for the largest Host Town event, a special community concert featuring the band “The Mighty Untouchables.” (The opening act will be “The Kingsmen,” a group of musicians with special needs.) Visiting team members will be led into the concert venue and there will be a torch ceremony. Team members and Host Town sponsors will be treated to a barbecue dinner donated by The Hamburger Factory. Members of the public will be able to purchase food from several food trucks that will be on site. Off-site parking will be available at Poway High School for a $5 fee, which will be given to the Special Olympics World Games. Shuttle buses will run to and from the lake. The event is expected to run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. On Thursday, July 23 the day will begin with Zumba exercises in Aubrey Park. The teams will then walk over to Old Poway Park for a carnival, therapeutic activities and food from a taco bar provided by Cocina Del Char-

ro. That afternoon the two teams will be bussed down to Petco Park where they will join other teams being hosted by San Diego County communities to watch the Padres play the Marlins. Game tickets are being donated by National University and the Padres. The teams will be sent off to Los Angeles on Friday, July 24 following a pancake breakfast at City Hall prepared and served by the Poway Kiwanis Club. The farewell will include remarks by public officials and a performance by Interdance Performing Arts. Bettin said that $36,250 has been pledged so far from local corporate sponsors, with $19,750 of that amount received. Those donations include $5,000 from Walmart, $3,000 from Cox Communications, $2,500 each from the Countryside Barn, Toyota of Poway and The Original Pancake House, $1,250 from the Knights of Columbus, and $1,000 each from Bill Howe Plumbing, EDCO and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Association. Meanwhile, City Councilman Jim Cunningham is soliticing $250 “honorary sponsor” donations in exchange for a torch trophy. To date, he has sold 41 trophies, which can be purchased at the Community Services Department on the first floor at City Hall.

BY EMILY SORENSEN Several Poway Unified School District schools will see the new school year beginning with new leadership. One of the biggest changes will be at Midland Elementary School, which was plagued with discord in the 2014-15 school year over its first-year principal, Tracy Liu. Several parent volunteers vented at a school board meeting in February, asking for help to resolve differences between the volunteers and the Midland Elementary administration. According to Jessica Wakefield, district spokeswoman, Liu has taken a position with the county Office of Education. Midland’s new principal will be Sidia Santos Martinez. Santos Martinez comes to the Poway Unified School District from the Perris Elementary School District, where she has been for five years. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Education from California State University San Marcos and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from San Diego State University. This isn’t Santos Martinez’s first time in the

Poway Unified School District; she had previously served as an assistant principal and a dual language teacher at Valley Elementary School. Shoal Creek Elementary School Principal Libby Keller is moving to Rolling Hills Elementary School. Shoal Creek will now be led by former Adobe Bluffs Elementary School Principal Mark Atkins. Westwood Elementary School will also have a new principal in the new school year, Kaleb Rashad. Rashad is currently an elementary school principal in the Val Verde Unified School District, a position he has held since 2011. He holds an doctorate in educational leadership, a master’s degree in educational administration, and a master’s degree in education. He has also served as an assistant principal at Twin Peaks and Oak Valley middle schools in the Poway Unified School District and as a teacher in Moreno Valley. He is a retired U.S. Marine. Valley Elementary School will also be getting a new principal in Ricardo Cecena, who will move over from Park Village Elementary School. The school’s former principal, Andrew Johnsen, has taken a new position outside of the district.

PNEC to discuss wildfire survival tactics The Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC) is sponsoring a free meeting on how to survive a wildfire from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 9 at 14211 Twin Peaks Road. The speaker will be Karen Boyle, a local attorney and member of the San Diego Community Emergency Response Team. Boyle has survived 3 wildfires and will share her expertise and the process of emergency preparation.

Pomerado Hospital gaining services from closed PH campus BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Palomar Health’s board has decided to close the public health district’s downtown Escondido campus and shift its services to Pomerado Hospital in Poway and Pomerado Medical Center in Escondido. The board made the decision during a special meeting on June 24. About two weeks earlier, Palomar Health management’s recommendation to close the campus was announced. District officials then held four “community conversation” events to hear from the public and answer questions. Two — on June 15 and 23 — were held at Pomerado Hospital. The closure is likely to occur by this fall, according to Palomar Health President and CEO Robert Hemker. In addition to shifting most services to Pomerado and Palomar Medical Center, some might be shared with other nearby facilities, including the Rancho Bernardo Outpatient Surgical Center on an “as needed” basis. Officials said the district is losing $20 million a year by keeping the Palomar Health Downtown Campus open in Escondido, which is about three miles from its new state-of-the-art hospital that opened in 2012. In addition, more than $172 million in infrastructure and information technological upgrades are needed over the next five years at the campus that was the original Palomar Medical Center. The work does not include aesthetics like new paint and flooring. Money saved will go toward reinvesting in patient care throughout the system. In all, the closure could mean a savings of $272.4 million over the next five years. “Palomar Health has a commitment to the community to continue providing high-quality, safe patient care into the future,” Hemker said. “This decision positions our organization well to continue serving our community and growing with their health care needs. I am extremely confident in this recommendation and have faith that our leadership, medical staff, nursing staff and community partners will make this transition a success. “As we continue our ‘patient first’ focus I am excited about

the future of Palomar Health,” he said. “We must adapt to the rapid changes in health care, but will not compromise on our promise of high-quality, safe patient care. I thank our board for making this very tough, but necessary, decision that will help ensure our citizens have access to the highest quality healthcare for decades to come.” “Everyone in our service area deserves access to the best facilities and care available and it is our responsibility to ensure continued access now and for future generations,” said Linda Greer, Palomar Health’s board chairwoman. “This was a very important decision for the future of Palomar Health, and we put a great deal of thought into our vote. I am confident this is the right choice for the district and those we serve, and I appreciate the staff, patients and community members who had a voice during this process. I am excited about the future of Palomar Health.” The 319-bed downtown campus provides comprehensive care to more than 22,000 inpatients annually, according to the district’s website. Medical and surgical services include a birth center, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric care unit (a partnership with Rady Children’s Hospital), oncology treatment, stereotactic radiosurgery, rehabilitation services and the Center for Behavioral Health. Per presented information it also offers cardiac rehabilitation, an infusion center, non-clinical services, outpatient occupational/physical therapy, perinatology, radiation therapy and a sleep lab. The shift of services will include transitioning inpatient rehabilitation plus labor and delivery services to Palomar Medical Center and increasing the behavioral health services already provided at Pomerado Hospital. Emergency services at both hospitals will remain the same. Officials said neither PMC nor Pomerado consistently operate at ideal capacity, so a consolation of services would mean they are better used. Officials estimate 60 to 75 benefitted (full time) employees and 180 to 220 per diem (part time) employees could lose their jobs. Health district officials said they plan to conduct a thorough review to determine the highest and best use of the down-

town site after service transition concludes. Palomar Health is the largest public health care district by area in California, with more than 500,000 residents. It has several facilities serving North County, including hospitals in Escondido and Poway; Expresscare health clinics in Escondido, Rancho Penasquitos, San Elijo Hills and Temecula; and a skilled nursing facility in Poway.

Do Your Windows Make Your Home Look Outdated? Do they leak air or have condensation between the panes? Are your windows practically impossible to open and close?

You need new replacement windows from Renewal by Andersen. If you have outdated, drafty, broken, or inefficient windows, your home will never be as comfortable or attractive as you would like—and your energy bills will probably always be hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars more than they should be. Built for San Diego’s climate, Renewal by Andersen windows and doors will make your home more comfortable and beautiful, and will help you save money on your energy bills! - Custom Built: For a tight, energy efficient fit, we custom build your replacement windows to your home’s precise measurements—right down to 1/16th of an inch. - Superior Performance: Only Renewal by Andersen uses Fibrex frame material, which blocks thermal heat transfer nearly 700 times better than aluminum framed windows. Our windows are also 70% more energy efficient in summer as compared to ordinary dual pane windows! - Unrivaled Design Options: Your windows should complement your home’s design, not detract from it! Vinyl windows can’t take the heat of dark exterior colors, because they’ll fade, crack or warp in the sun. Renewal by Andersen’s Fibrex frames come in a variety of beautiful frame colors, from white to our popular dark Teratone.®

The full renovation, which includes new interior carpet and paint, new furniture, a new computer lab and computers, a new teen area, new study rooms, new lighting and more, is now expected to be finished by December, a year after the remodeling work officially began. Despite the significant delays and changing to a new contractor, the project is still expected to be finished within its original $1.5 million budget, said Taylor. The plan to finance the remodel was approved by the City Council in November 2013. The library’s endowment fund contributed $625,000, and the City of Poway and San Diego County each contributed $375,000. The final $125,000 came from a donation from the Poway Friends of the Library. Work was originally planned to be finished in summer 2014. Delays led to the ground-breaking for the canopy not beginning until December. The initial contractor hired for the job was unable to complete the work, and was replaced earlier this year. With the outside canopy finished, work has also begun on the interior remodels. Sections of the library are under construction and fenced off, and about half of the library’s books are currently on rolling carts, usually used for shelving. Taylor said the new shelves for the books will be placed after the new lighting is installed and new carpeting is laid. While she didn’t have a definite timeline for this, the lights have already been ordered, she said. All of the library’s lighting will be upgraded. Some accent painting has already been completed, with a new yellow wall being featured behind the check-out desk, and teal and salmon accent walls gracing the children’s section of the library. Taylor said the colors will be reflected in the new carpeting. A new computer lab, which will feature a laptop bar with power stations for patrons to bring in and use their own laptops, as well as traditional desktops, is currently under construction, as well as two new study rooms, which will be able to be combined into one large room. A new teen center is also being put in, which will now house all of the library’s young adult books.

Designed to sell When potential buyers ďŹ rst enter your home, it is the ďŹ rst impression that will stay with them when considering purchase. When buyers are typically looking at multiple homes in the same day, making your home memorable can be done with strategic staging. You are helping the buyer to see the potential without leaving it up to their imagination. If a home is empty without furniture it can be difďŹ cult for some buyers to imagine themselves living in it. What is a home stager? A home stager is similar to an interior decorator. They have expertise on choosing colors, fabrics and furniture and arranging them to have the best, most functional appeal. Why should I stage my home? According to the Real Estate Staging AssociationÂŽ, professionally listed staged properties spend 87 percent less time on the market. In California if a home is staged prior to going on the market it will sell 5x’s faster than a home that is not staged. What process is involved in Home Staging? 1. Plan - Develop an action plan that helps to highlight the strengths and downplay the weaknesses. For example, removing heavy curtains from a window with a great view or downsizing oversized furniture to make the room look bigger. 2. Declutter - Too much clutter or disorder in a house can give a buyer the impression that the house does not have enough storage space or was not well maintained. 3. Repairs - Schedule any needed repairs. This includes worn carpet, loose door knobs, leaky faucets, broken screens, paint, etc‌ Properties that are move-in ready are more appealing to buyers.

How much money could you save by staging your home? The Real Estate Staging AssociationÂŽ study show 63 homeowners had their property on the market 143 days before staging. If their mortgage and expenses are $2,100 per month they could have saved $8,400 if they staged it before listing it. Choosing the right agent with the right expertise is so important when selling your home. Rick Sauer believes his role as your Realtor is to guide you through the buying or selling process, taking the time to make sure you understand every step of the transaction. If you have any questions about selling your home, give him a call.

Rick Sauer 858-414-0977 www.ricksauer.com

Rick Sauer believes in staging and covers the cost!

4. Reorganize – Bring in furniture, artwork, bedding, pillows and some home dÊcor to create a balanced and invited space. Many home stagers have warehouses of items to help your home feel like your buyers dream home.

Windermere Homes & Estates is Fastest Growing Windermere Franchise Group In two years company has grown to over 300 agents in seven ofďŹ ces

The idea of owning a non-corporate and agent-centric firm fueled our desire to get back to basics and create a company that puts agents first.

858.487.5110 | www.whesd.com

OB Jacobi, president of Windermere Real Estate, announced today that San Diego-based Windermere Homes & Estates is expected to reach $1 billion in sales in its second year in business, making it the fastest growing franchise group within Windermere’s 300 ofďŹ ce network. In July 2013, Windermere Homes & Estates co-owners, Rich Johnson and Brian Gooding, opened their ďŹ rst ofďŹ ce in Santaluz with 0 agents. Twenty-four months later, they’ve opened six additional ofďŹ ces and recruited more than 300 agents with plans for future expansion. “When Brian and I opened our ďŹ rst Windermere ofďŹ ce two years ago, we agreed that our main focus would be keeping the culture agent-centered and family-oriented by putting relationships before sales quotas,â€? said Johnson. “We also wanted to create an environment that fueled success and innovation. “ Since that time, Windermere Homes & Estates has expanded to seven ofďŹ ces in San Diego County and are the fourth largest residential real estate brokerage in San Diego based on sales volume. The company currently has a rolling 12-month sales volume of $875 million and this year, they expect to hit $1 billion. “Rich and Brian are the poster children for how to do things right,â€? said Jacobi. “They’ve embraced the Windermere culture, adopted all of our tools and technology, and built a team that understands that earning the respect of our clients and community can only be done through the highest level of professionalism.â€? The event has a projected budget of $50,000, so a little more help is needed to make sure the four-day visit by 100 Special Olympics athletes from Ecuador and Togo is memorable. Visit www.poway. org to donate money and/or volunteer time. THUMBS DOWN to Poway city officials for the slow pace toward coming up with a suitable memorial for Tony Gwynn, the San Diego Padres star and 20-year Poway resident who died in June 2014 following a battle with cancer. The City Council waited far too long before receiving a proposal that was modest, to say the least: A plaque on a small boulder near the Lake Poway baseball field concession stand. The council was right in flatly rejecting the plan and sending staff back to the drawing board. Let’s hope that something more appropriate can be proposed, and soon. THUMBS UP for the continuing efforts local service organizations provide to make our community a better place to call home. Two recent events come to mind: Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps members spending a recent Saturday clearing weeds and unwanted plants from the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center, and the Poway Kiwanis Club sponsoring a very successful inaugural Kids Safety Fair. THUMBS DOWN to the final design of the Rancho Bernardo welcome sign, the construction of which was recently completed. This project was filled with years of controversy as several designs were proposed and rejected for various reasons. While we know some members of the community adamantly pushed for a new sign to replace the deteriorating one finally destroyed in a vehicle accident, others have said the $50,000 replacement cost was too high and unnecessary. Considering RB was without a sign for almost six years and the new sign is uninspiring and generic looking, we agree. The money would have been better spent elsewhere.

Lawn replacement: Mixed bag of good, bad effects

L

isten to water officials from Gov. Jerry Brown down to local officials and you’d think replacing lawns with drought-resistant plants or artificial turf is a pure good, no negatives involved. They know lawn replacement, often called “xeriscaping because it can use cactuses and other desert plants, generally leads to at least a 30 percent cut in household water use. But, you could read reports from the ongoing Women’s World Cup soccer tournament, where ambient temperatures in cities like Winnipeg and Ottawa were in the high 70s at some game times, but temperatures on the synthetic grass fields ranged from 120 to 129 degrees. That’s the “heat island effect, where non-grassy surfaces like the faux grass and gravel sometimes used to replace lawns gather heat from the sun. Unlike grass, they don’t use the sunlight for anything, so heat energy can pile up and even warm adjacent buildings. Temperature differentials won’t often be as extreme as at the Women’s World Cup, but can drive up electricity use and air conditioning bills. Reports the Accuweather forecasting service’s blog, “Grassy surfaces will be significantly cooler on a sunny day when compared to artificial turf, gravel or pavement. This is one reason some homeowner associations are trying to ban replacement of front lawns with synthetic grass, even as many water agencies pay by the square foot for tearing out existing lawns. Homeowners often get phone calls from services offering free natural turf removal and replacement in exchange for signing over those payments. Some local water agencies, however, refuse to pass along turf-replacement subsidies for fake lawns using synthetic turf.

Thomas Elias SOCAL FOCUS There’s also the fact that grass pulls carbon out of the air. The more green leaf surfaces in any area, the more greenhouse gases will be absorbed. Which means grass helps fight climate change. Grassy surfaces also facilitate recharge of ground water, most water landing on them eventually trickling down into aquifers. So unless replacement surfaces are extremely porous, more storm water will eventually run off into the Pacific unused and less will become ground water. This all leads to questions about the efficiency of lawn replacement campaigns now being run by myriad water agencies. By far the largest of these plans comes from California’s biggest water provider, the six-county Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, often called “the Met, which has a $450 million, two-year conservation incentive program, aiming to save as much as 80,000 acre feet of water yearly over 10 years. That comes to $562 per acre foot saved, far more than the Met pays for most water today. The most visible and expensive part of this program is lawn replacement, which will use about three-fourths of the money to replace 172 million square feet of grass, or 3,948 acres. But lawn removal is far from the most effective part of the water-

saving plan. Much more will be saved by replacing old fixtures and equipment. “The device replacement part of our program should save about 60,000 of those acre feet, says Jeff Kightlinger, general manager of the Met. “Devices give a bigger bang for the buck. The Met is paying customers to install everything from lowflow shower heads to high-efficiency lawn sprinklers and a new generation of ultra-low-flow toilets. The biggest savings may come from new-generation cooling tower controls for heating and air conditioning units atop large buildings. And yet, reports Kightlinger, “Almost all the news reports on our conservation program have focused around turf replacement. Then there’s the fact that many thousands of acre feet of water are wasted by over-watering grass and trees. “Commonly used shrubs, trees and grasses have a lot of drought tolerance, says Dennis Pittenger, Riverside-based environmental horticulturist for the University of California’s Cooperative Extension. “They are usually overwatered. I think we ought to focus more on people’s watering behavior, and less on replacing plants. Commercial turf grower Jurgen Gramckow of Oxnard maintains many new drought-resistant landscapes won’t hold up when rains finally come. “Landscapes with bark as ground cover, for example, will lose a lot of it and clog storm drains, too, he says. “The water agency perspective on lawn replacement is one-dimensional. No one talks about tradeoffs, negative effects. He’s right about that, which means today’s lawn replacement fad may really be less about water savings than trying to change attitudes, also known as social engineering.

Oriental rug merchant closing Miramar Road main branch BY DIANE Y. WELCH Interior designers know that the choice of floor covering in a home is critical for the look, feel and ambience of the space. An area rug, for example, can set the tone for the color palette and the aesthetic of everything else in a room. Keenly aware of this design strategy is Houchang “Michael” Mikaeli, founder of Golden Rugs Galler y. His store — established in 1992 and located at 7160 Miramar Road, Suite 126 in San Diego — maintains a large variety of high-quality area rugs that cater to every design aspect of a home’s interior, whether the approach is contemporary, decorative, tribal or antique. His family has been involved in the rug business for three generations, so Golden Rugs’ knowledge of all aspects of the rug manufacturing business runs deep. As much as he is passionate about rugs, Mikaeli above all values his clientele. When people come into the store they are given a brief history of all the rugs. “There is a story to each one,” said Mikaeli.

Besides dealing in rugs, the Mikaeli family has expertise in cleaning and repairing, as well as appraising rugs and educating clients about a rug’s origins. “It’s important that clients understand the levels of workmanship as well as how rugs differ from one region of the world to another in both quality and design,” Mikaeli explained. “We feel it is essential to inform our clients about various rugs when they make their purchase, because the more informed the client, the easier it will be to find the right rug for their needs,” he added. Ditch the Excuses. Getting in great shape requires consistency, and it’s all too easy to make excuses for missing a workout. Whether you’re always on the road or can’t afford to renew your gym membership, Wade says such excuses don’t hold water. “While modern training methods involve equipment like barbells, balls, boxes and gymnastics gear, the superior way of building maximum speed, power and ability is the old-school method of using just your body’s own weight, nothing else,” he says.

Whether you’re crunched for time or crunched for space, don’t let these circumstances prevent you from getting a great workout. Pushups, squats, leg raises, bridges and jumps are just a few fundamental exercises that can be performed in a small space without any gear. Ditch the Fear. Traditional calisthenic moves used by gymnasts, martial artists, athletes and tumblers – such as flips and kip-ups – may seem intimidating. But Wade says that most people have the inherent ability to master such moves by working on each one in progressions. “Movements like these have been handed down from generation to generation,” he says. “They should not be the exclusive domain of gymnasts. Stay Focused. Don’t try to take shortcuts. Successful athletes don’t leap ahead and tackle moves they aren’t ready for – they find ways to make the stuff they can already do work even better for them. When it comes to physical fitness, don’t settle for halfway decent. No matter what your level of fitness is today, take a cue from the fitness experts to use more of your full potential.

As a youth I heard the expression “My country, right or wrong!” During Watergate I was taught to respect the office, regardless of your feelings for the office’s occupant. These sentiments are worth considering on our nation’s birthday. Still, this is a marketing column. Why the political lecture? If my theory’s correct, those proclaiming to love the flag and what America stands for are being inconsistent. Inconsistency tells your audience your messaging’s confused, hypocritical, or opportunistic. None of these attributes lend themselves to a persuasive message, nor to making your sales effort any easier.

And since we’re all trying to sell something — product, service, or ideology — consistency in your messaging and symbolism is critically important if you want to be taken seriously. So like any other type of branding, using the American flag as part of your message must be predictable, even when you disagree with the person in charge. Therefore, as you’re looking at your own business messaging this Independence Day and beyond, consider whether your organization only uses the American flag as a convenient prop. If you only take it out to show you’re having a sale on July 4 and Memorial Day, nobody will believe your love of the flag come next December. Bottom line: Keep your flag display constant. Don’t change just because you disagree with something happening in Washington. And from someone who flies his flag yearround, Happy Independence Day. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Visit Mr. Marketing at MiniGolf For Good this Saturday in Webb Park.

Sports helps youngster push past medical obstacles BY MICHAEL BOWER

Kamden Houshan, 6, hits golf balls at a driving range in Escondido. Courtesy photo

Kamden Houshan is like many other 6-year-old boys. He loves coloring, Legos, Marvel superheros — especially Spiderman — and playing on the iPad. But sports is what has given him the biggest boost in a life that has been full of medical obstacles from the very beginning. Houshan, who just finished kindergarten at Pomerado Elementar y School, was born with a tumor in his spinal cord. The diagnosis of the tumor came back “unknown and eventually was recorded in a journal by the American Academy of Neurology as a congenital giant intramedullary spinal cord schwannoma. Houshan, who is 3-foot-7 and weighs 45 pounds, has no use of his legs or any muscles from the chest down. But that has not kept him from falling in love with sports and continuing to wear a smile on his face. “He did not pick up sports on his own, said Kamden’s mom, Yvonne, as Kamden hit golf balls at a driving range in Escondido from the seat of his

wheelchair. “The doctors scared me a little telling me he needs to exercise because when puberty hits the weight just piles on ... I thought we need to get him into something that is a routine and something that he enjoys. Yvonne had never thought of sports as an option until she started to notice other paraplegic’s playing. When Kamden was around 4, he got his first taste of sports and his love for them has continued to grow ever since. He has played wheelchair basketball, tennis, soccer, sled hockey and golf. He has also done archery, kayaking and cycling among many others. “We just let him try all the sports, Yvonne said. “We just have started to get a feel for what sports he can really tolerate. The ones he prefers, especially sled hockey, are usually out of the sun. “He likes the cold, Yvonne said. “He doesn’t really like to be hot. Kamden is excited about attending the 26th annual Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp from Aug. 7 - 11 at North Crown Point Shores Park. The camp teaches a variety of adaptive sports,

including softball, basketball, tennis, rugby, archery, bocce ball and handcycling. The cost for the necessar y equipment and training for Kamden to play all of these sports can be expensive. But that’s where the Challenged Athletes Foundation has played a huge role for the Houshans. The foundation, whose mission is “to provide opportunities and support to people with physical challenges so they can pursue active lifestyles throughout physical fitness and competitive athletics, has provided over 1,700 athletes across the world with a variety of grants for sports equipment, coaching, mentoring and other things. Kamden is a first-time grantee of the foundation. The grant has helped offset the expenses of his coaching for sled hockey and wheelchair basketball. “I filled out the entire form online and then when we got the grant I was so happy, Yvonne said. “It is nice that I can give him what he wants and he can continue to play. And his being able to continue to play has kept his spirits high and his smile a mile wide.

Double threat Jake Fiske led Titans to lacrosse glory BY MICHAEL BOWER A long stick midfielder is arguably the most important player on a lacrosse field. They need to be speedy, ferocious defenders with an uncanny ability to play long stretches of minutes at times. Coaches are lucky to find someone just able to do that. But the exceptional long stick midfielder can play offense, too. They are a double threat and that is exactly what Jake Fiske was for Poway High last season. The junior scored 32 goals and assisted on eight as a long stick. He also scooped up over 100 ground balls, as he helped the Titans capture the CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship. It was the school’s first section title in boys lacrosse since 2002. “I have been involved with

lacrosse for 25 years and I have never heard of a long stick midfielder having 40 points, Poway coach Zack Burke said. “The best of the best would have 12 goals and 10 assists. I have never heard of a long stick midfielder that scores 32 goals and eight assists in one season. Maybe a career, but certainly not one season. Fiske was recently named the CIF Player of the Year for his efforts. “It is humbling and definitely nice, said Fiske, who is committed to University of Massachusetts-Lowell. “Ever ything that I have been working for is paying off, especially with the championship. Fiske has been a star lacrosse player for some time now. In the summer of 2012, he helped the 15-and-under San Diego All-Star team capture a U.S. Lacrosse Region-

Poway High’s Jake Fiske was named the CIF Player of the Year for boys lacrosse. Photo by Sherri Dunlap al championship. His stellar defensive play led to several transitional goals in that one. It was clearly a sign of what was to

come, because he was doing plenty of that for the Titans this season. “My position isn’t all about scoring goals, but I take

pride in being a specialist and I like to push the transition, he said. “A couple of years ago, I never thought of trying to score goals. Now I

think I need to do whatever I can to help the team. Said Burke: “Jake is the heart and soul of our team ... Every time he is on the field he is capable of making a big play. When he goes over the head and takes the ball from the best player on the other team, our guys feed off that. Fiske even ran the point in man-up situations. That was just one area the Titans excelled at during their run to the Open Division championship. In fact, a majority of Fiske’s goals came in those situations. “Having a long stick on man-up goes against the basic teachings of lacrosse, Burke said. “The long stick is harder to protect and would hamper most players if they had to play offense with a long stick. Fiske uses his long stick as an advantage. Fiske is playing club lacrosse over the summer and then will be back at it for high school for his senior season. He achieved all his goals last season and hopes to do even more next year. “I plan on working even harder, he said.

Evan Jameson, Makenna Grewe are top Nighthawk athletes BY MICHAEL BOWER

Del Norte High Female Athlete of the Year Makenna Grewe, left, and Male Athlete of the Year Evan Jameson, right. Courtesy photo

Evan Jameson went out for the basketball team as a freshman at Del Norte High. He was cut and figured that would be the last of his high school sporting experience. Then he fell in love with running. “We would run a timed mile in P.E. and I always thought that was pretty cool, said Jameson, explaining how he found his way into cross country and track and field. “Then one of the kids on the cross country team said I should try running for them. Jameson became the best runner in the history of the school. He is the only Nighthawk to ever capture a San Diego Section cross country championship, winning the Division III title as a senior this past year. He also took second in the section in the 3,200-meter in track and field. “I am really surprised to be honest, said Jameson, who recently signed to run at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. “If you would have asked me at the beginning of senior year if I would do any of this I would say there is no way. I was never expecting anything. Jameson added to his trophy case recently by being named the Male Athlete of the Year at Del Norte. Makenna Grewe, a star field hockey, soccer and girls lacrosse player, was named the Female Athlete of the Year. “It means so much to me, said Grewe, who will play field hockey at the University of Iowa in the fall. “I have worked super hard and it is just an amazing feeling that I was recognized this way. Jameson outshined the athletes in the bigger sports (baseball, football and basketball) to win the award. “Track and cross country aren’t the biggest sports at our high school so I was surprised I won it, Jameson said. “I was just blown away. Grewe played all four years on the varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams. She played three years on the varsity girls soccer team at Del Norte.

In her senior seasons, Grewe scored 28 goals and had 23 assists in field hockey, had 58 goals and 12 assists in lacrosse and had three goals for the soccer team. She helped the girls lacrosse team capture a Division II section championship as a sophomore. “Playing all those sports was so much fun, Grewe said. “I loved every minute of it. Jameson’s biggest moment of his high school career is arguably the final 100 meters he ran in the 3,200 section championship this past track season. He looked destined for a sixth-place finish, but somehow he found an extra jolt of energy to finish in second and qualify for state. “I actually had a bad mentality going into that race, Jameson said. “I was thinking I would just try to hang on as long as possible and then get a good time. But that last 100 it changed. When I saw the second and third place guys, I thought I would never live this down if I don’t go for it.

Entertainment Four summer concerts being staged at Welk Theatre BY EMILY SORENSEN Enjoy the Beatles, Neil Diamond, the Beach Boys and Santana — or, at least, tributes to them — at the Welk Theatre between July 30 and Aug. 2. The Welk Theatre’s Summer Concert Series will feature Britain’s Finest, a Beatles tribute band on Thursday, July 30; Surfin’ — The Beach Boys Tribute, on Friday, July 31; The Neil Diamond Experience on Saturday, Aug. 1; and Soul Sacrifice, a Santana tribute band, on Sunday, Aug. 2. Tickets are already half gone, and Josh Carr, producer and theater manager, said tickets might be 75 percent sold out by Monday, so get yours as soon as possible. Shows are $30 each per adult, package deals available. For tickets, visit sandiegotheatre. welkresorts.com.

Soul Sacrifice, a Santana tribute band, will perform on Sunday, Aug. 2 All shows begin at 7 p.m., with food stations on the patio opening at 5:30 p.m., with kobe sliders, fries, cheesecake, pasta and wings for $5. The patio bar will also have beer, wine and cocktails for sale.

Britain’s Finest, performing on Thursday, July 30, describes itself as one of the most authentic Beatles tribute bands of the past 20 years, and works to faithfully recreate the look, sound and

experience of the Beatles in concert, from costumes, to music to banter. The band performed this past Sunday at Lake Poway. (See Page B7.) On Friday, July 31, Surfin’ — The Beach Boys Tribute,

will be performing. Surfin’ — The Beach Boys Tribute is made up of five professional musicians, one of whom was a long-standing member of the Brian Wilson Band. According to the band’s website, “Surfin’ is a faithful recreation of what it would have been like to see The Beach Boys live, in concert, in their prime. The incomparable beauty of their vocal harmonies, the crashing back beat of Dennis Wilson’s drums, the soaring surf guitar of Carl Wilson, and the genius of Brian Wilson’s music are all here. The uniband choreography, the Fender guitar line up, the famous custom striped shirts, right down to the black suede Beach Boys boots, it’s all here.” The Neil Diamond Experience will be performing on Saturday, Aug. 1. Featuring Jason Lohrke on vocals, this

nine-person band will perform everything from “Sweet Caroline” to “Song Sung Blue.” According to The Neil Diamond Experience’s website, “Far beyond a tribute show… with “Next to Real Neil,” you will thoroughly enjoy experiencing the sound, vision, feel, and music of a classic Neil Diamond event, all in a live mixed media concert.” Finishing up the Welk’s Summer Concert Series is Soul Sacrifice, a Santana tribute band, performing on Sunday, Aug. 2. This Southern Californiabased band blends rock, Latin, jazz, pop and R & B music in a way only the music of Santana can, according to a press release. Enjoy a variety of Santana’s greatest hits, including “Evil Ways,” “Black Magic Woman,” “She’s Not There,” “Dance Sister Dance,” “Smooth” and more.

OLD GLOBE THEATRE

It’s ‘Twelfth Night’ for lunacy, laughter and love BY DIANA SAENGER

W

hat happens when a ship wrecks off the rocky coast of Illyria is both fun and intriguing and proves some will REVIEW do anything for true love. Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” returns to The Old Globe Theatre,

directed by Rebecca Taichman, onstage through July 26. Viola (Rutina Wesley) disguised as the boy, Cesario, was on the ship with her brother Sebastian (LeRoy McClain). Once on land she finds a job, a friend and a new beau — her boss, Duke Orsino (Terence Archie). Bliss soon fades as Viola realizes Orsino

is pursuing a young beauty named Olivia (Sara Topham). But things really get topsyturvy when Olivia sets her eyes on Cesario, not knowing “he” is really Viola. There’s more mischief about as servant Maria (Amy Aquino) decides to partner with drunkard Sir Toby Belch (Tom McGowan) to get revenge on Malvolio (Robert Joy), another servant whom Maria finds presumptuous. Wesley said she’s always wanted to play a character like Viola because “Viola is incredibly witty, and, disguised as a man, she’s as good as the next guy and always has a comeback. She’s strong, yet she can be incredibly vulnerable. She’s a survivor who has a lot of heart and is a voice of reason. “One of my favorite scenes is when Cesa-

rio is making moves toward Olivia, and I’m on scene as Viola. It gets very confusing, but it was so fun to do. Almost every time we rehearsed there was something different happening. “The costumes are beautiful, the set design is wonderful, there’s lots of different scenes and crazy stuff, and the cast is just amazing,” Wesley said. “Rebecca has been wonderful guiding us, but above all, it’s Shakespeare. I just adore his work, and it’s a pleasure to just dive in and do it.” IF YOU GO: “Twelfth Night,” runs through July 26 at The Old Globe Theatre’s Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, 1363 Old Globe Way in Balboa Park, San Diego. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same

lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-7302727 or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 13-21406-SP-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. A STATE OR FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR SAVINGS BANK SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE: All right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 14923 Derringer Road, Poway, CA 92064 A.P.N.: 321-341-11-00. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $598,863.65. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens

senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-9608299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource. com/MortgageServices/ DefaultManagement/ TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2014-06248-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. Assessed values up 5.6 percent

HONORED — Carla Molino, a Realtor associated with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, has been named to the International Sterling Society of 2014, an achievement award given by the brokerage. Members of the International Sterling Society represent the top 17 percent of sales associates and representatives internationally affiliated with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) — The assessed value of all taxable property in San Diego County was $439 billion as of Jan. 1, up 23.4 billion, or 5.6 percent, over last year, the county has announced. Assessor/Recorder/Clerk Ernest Dronenburg Jr. said the tax roll includes nearly 987,000 parcels of land, 59,800 businesses, more than 13,000 boats and nearly 1,800 aircraft. The assessed value of taxable property with the City of Poway rose 5.09 percent while the City of San Diego’s value went up 6 percent. “Comparable sales and virtually all other market indicators continue to point to an upward trend in property values,’’ Dronenburg said. He said that all 18 cities in the region saw an increase in property values for the second year in a row. Imperial Beach led the way with a 7.3 percent hike, followed by Encinitas with 7 percent and Del Mar with 6.3 percent. Most owners will see a property tax increase of less than 2 percent because of Proposition 13 restrictions, he said, though properties where ownership is transferred will be assessed at their full value. Dronenburg said properties reassessed during the recession to levels below their Proposition 13 base values could also see a rise greater than 2 percent. Owners who disagree with their assessment can file an appeal form between July 2 and Nov. 30.
