Street repairs start Monday The City of Poway on July 13 will begin conducting street maintenance on approximately 4.4 million square feet of residential and arterial streets, mostly in the northern portion of the city. The work to be done includes deep patching and slurry seal within Street Maintenance Zone 6, which includes Pomerado Road from Twin Peaks Road to the northern city limit, and neighborhoods surrounding the streets

of Martincoit Road, Avenida Florencia, Stone Canyon Road, Kaitz Street and the Adobe Ridge Road neighborhoods. This work is scheduled for completion in late August. Street asphalt overlay will also be completed on Garden Road from Poway Road to Whitewater Road, Stowe Drive from Pomerado Road to 1,000 feet east of Pomerado Road, the intersection of Twin Peaks Road SEE STREETS, Page A8

The public is invited to participate in a City Council workshop regarding the drought to be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 16 in the council chambers. Councilmembers are expected to discuss what steps can be taken to ensure that water consumption in the city is reduced by 32 percent to comply with state mandates that went into effect on June 1. To date, the city has restricted outdoor watering, first to three times per week starting in August 2014 and then to twice a week starting in April. It has also stepped up its water conservation education efforts. Since last August, overall water consumption in Poway has declined only 14 percent, according to Assistant City Manager Tina White. Usage in May dropped 45 percent, but much of that decline was attributed to heavy rains and cool temperatures. It is expected that among the topics to be discussed at the July 16 workshop is the idea of establishing residential baseline allocations. SEE DROUGHT, Page A8

PHS grad wins $7.5M in poker tournament BY MICHAEL BOWER Brian Rast, the Poway High valedictorian in 2000, scored the biggest win of his professional poker career on Sunday. The 33-year-old won $7.5 million in the inaugural $500,000 Super High Roller Bowl at Aria in Las Vegas. “It’s a little surreal, it really hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Rast, according to Bluff.com. “I actually think I’m getting happier as time passes, just because the process of staying focused is so consuming that right after it happened I wasn’t ready to process that I won. That was an amazing tournament.” Rast, who won his seat into the Super High Roller

Rancho Bernardo Historical Society will be showcased in Balboa Park on Tuesday, an opportunity to introduce the community’s long history to a wider audience. “It’s a good attention grabber,” said RB Historical Society President Nancy Canfield. “We’re very honored to be invited.” The historical society will set up a display in the courtyard outside the San Diego History Center, located in the Casa de Balboa building. The display will feature the history of Rancho Bernardo, Bernardo Winery and the Kumeyaay who lived in the area. Historical society volunteers will staff it from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 14. San Diego County residents who stop by the Rancho Bernardo display will also have free admission to the San Diego Histor y

Center because July 14 is the second Tuesday of the month. Through Balboa Park’s “Residents Free Tuesdays” program, locals (with proof of residency) will also have free admission to the Museum of Photographic Arts plus the Veterans’ Museum and Memorial Center. They can also stop by the Timken Museum of Art, which is always free. For the list of all museums and the Tuesdays they offer free admission to locals, go to www. balboapark.org/visit/tuesdays. Canfield said this is the second time the Rancho Bernardo group has been invited to set up a display in Balboa Park. “We get to explain some of our history (to park visitors) who only know downtown’s history,” Canfield said. “But we have a lot of history (up here), with the Kumeyaay and we are (located) in a historic winery, the oldest in San Diego County that has been continuously operated.”

Toy museum raising funds to expand store BY EMILY SORENSEN

Officers for Soroptimist International of Poway were recently installed during a ceremony held at the home of Cindy and Ted Spilman. New board members include, from left, Cindy Spilman, Sandy Jacobs, Deborah Holland, Patty Grosch, Lynn Flanagan, Karen Dunn and Judy Horning. Patty Grosch is incoming president.

Grosch is new Soroptimist president BY EMILY SORENSEN Soroptimist International of Poway will be led by Patty Grosch this year. Grosch took over from previous club president Candy Young on July 1. Grosch also filled in as president during the previous year when Young became ill. She has been a member of the Soroptimists for three and a half years. “When I retired from Northrop Grumman after 27 years, I wanted to get more involved in the community,” said Grosch, who is married to Poway City Councilman Dave Grosch. “I’d been volunteering with Backyard Produce, but that didn’t take up much time.” Grosch attended a Chamber of Com-

merce mixer in 2012, where she learned about Soroptimist International of Poway. After attending only two meetings, Grosch joined the group. “They made me feel welcome right away,” she said. “I didn’t really know anyone when I joined, but they were so friendly. It’s such wonderful work to do with a group of very dedicated women.” Grosch said that the group is looking to expand its transitional housing project by adding a fourth apartment to the three they currently maintain. “We had such a successful fundraiser last spring that our goal is to subsidize another apartment.” The group is just waiting for an apartment in one of Poway’s low-income housing communities to become available.

These apartments are made available for women and their children leaving abusive situations, and come fully furnished, down to food and toilet paper, for the families to live in for 18 months. When the families transition out of the program, they are free to take everything provided to them in the apartment to start their new lives. Grosch said the Poway Soroptimists are also planning on increasing the amount of scholarships they give out to women and girls in the community, thanks to their successful fundraiser, which, along with the help of Soroptimist International of Rancho Bernardo, raised $93,500. “We hit the big time this year,” she said. “I was blown away, and so impressed with everyone’s hard work.”

The San Diego Toy and Doll Museum is looking to expand and needs the public’s help. The museum, at 14031 Midland across the street from Old Poway Park and behind Old Poway Market and Café Lily, is looking to raise $30,000. This would allow it to expand to the space next door and provide more exhibit space, as well as play space for children. “(The money) would allow us to pay the increased rent to expand, allow us more display area, more interactive areas, and we’d like to expand the workshop area,” said Elisa Ballard, the musuem’s president. The museum has so far raised $9,500 in one month on its GoFundMe page, almost a third of the way to its goal. The GoFundMe page can be viewed at www.gofundme.com/sdtdm. Donations can also be made through the museum’s website at www.sdtoyanddollmuseum.org. The San Diego Toy and Doll Museum is a registered 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. Ballard said the goal is to increase play space for kids, including putting an interactive area for roleplay, like a puppet theater, restaurant and grocery store. “It’s beneficial for kids to be able to play more while at the museum,” she said. “At the museum and gift shop, we are offering a fun experience for people of all ages to get back in touch with healthy ways to play and create a memorable family bonding experience. Play should not be thought of as a guilty pleasure, but as essential to human beings as a good night’s sleep. It is important to people of all ages to keep some aspects of play in their lives which can lead to more joy and creativity. Play has even been found to benefit innovation in the workplace.” Visitors can currently play in the Lego room, as well as in SEE DOLL, Page A8

Young trio explores STEM careers during unique summer camp BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Three local girls were introduced to career opportunities in STEM fields after being selected by a Rancho Bernardo organization to attend Tech Trek. The annual camp for incoming eighth grade girls was held June 21 to 27 at the University of California San Diego. It is one of 10 summer camps throughout California that are sponsored by American Association of University Women chapters. The Rancho Bernardo AAUW chapter selected Rylee Allbaugh, who attends Twin Peaks Middle School in Poway; Jessica Daum, a student at Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch; and Azure Paxton, a student at Bernardo Heights Middle School in Rancho Bernardo. RB AAUW, Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo sponsored their camp fees. In previous years it has cost $900 to sponsor each girl. RB AAUW has sponsored girls to attend Tech Trek since the

program was started by AAUW in California in 1998, according to the chapter’s website. The Rotary clubs have joined AAUW as sponsors for the last several years, said RB AAUW member Irene Dunny. Tech Trek is designed to get girls interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers before the girls start moving away from those subjects in high school due to peer pressure, according to Tech Trek officials. Rylee, a 12-year-old Poway resident, said she was interested

in becoming a Hollywood set designer before attending Tech Trek. Now, she would like to become a systems engineer who designs tablets and keyboards. Rylee said a Tech Trek fieldtrip to Viasat introduced her to this career possibility. “It was very eye opening,” Rylee said about listening to female Viasat engineers talk about the company’s satellites and rocket systems. “It was really cool, learning how they got into engineering.” She added, “I’d still like to be a set designer, but definitely being a systems engineer is the way to go.” SEE STEM, Page A9

Wranglers graduate 21 dancers

The Wranglers Square Dance Club recently graduated 21 students, its largest class of square dance students in the last 10 years. “Overcoming the stereotypes in peoples’ minds is the biggest challenge we have in getting folks to give square dancing a tr y,” said Nick van der Schalie, the club’s treasurer and media contact. “This is a fun activity that has nothing to do with frilly skirts or cowboy boots. It is something that anyone, of any age, with no prior danc-

Apart from our dances, our club members get together for other activities like hiking adventures and sailing excursions.”

The club will star t new classes on Thursday, Sept. 10 at Ber nardo Heights Middle School. Classes start at 7 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. The cost is $5 per class, per student, but the first class is free so anyone is welcome to give it a try.

The club is run by a volunteer board of officers. The current president is Marty Knutson. The Wranglers are an affiliate of the Palomar Square Dance Association. More information can be found at: www.TheWranglers.org or on Facebook.

Seniors Simplified cellphones for seniors with hearing problems Can you recommend some basic simplified cellphones for seniors with hearing loss? My 82-yearold father needs to get a new cellphone for occasional calls or emergencies, but he needs something that’s easy to use and one that he can hear on.

There are several simplified cellphones on the market today that are specifically designed for seniors – including those with hearing loss. These are basic cellphones that come with big buttons, easy to navigate menus, SOS emergency buttons, enhanced sound and are hearing aid compatible too. Here are some top options. Senior-friendly phones If your dad isn’t locked into a cellphone contract, there are three senior-friendly options to consider, all from no-contract cellphone companies. One of best is GreatCall’s Jitterbug5 (greatcall. com, 800-918-8543). This custom designed Samsung flip-phone offers a backlit keypad with big buttons, large text on a brightly colored screen, and “YES” and “NO” buttons to access the phone’s menu of options versus confusing icons. It also offers voice dialing, a powerful speakerphone, a built-in camera, and a variety of optional health and safety features like the “5Star” medical alert button that would let your dad call for help and speak to a certified agent 24/7 that could identify his location and dispatch help

Jim Miller THE SAVVY SENIOR as needed. “Urgent Care,” which provides access to registered nurses and doctors for advice and diagnoses. And “GreatCall Link,” which keeps family members informed through your dad’s phone activities. The Jitterbug5 sells for $99 with a one-time $35 activation fee, no contract, and calling plans that start at $15 per month. If you’re looking for something a little less expensive, the Doro PhoneEasy 626 sold through Consumer Cellular (consumercellular.com, 888345-5509) is an excellent option. This flip phone offers a backlit, separated keypad that can speak the numbers as you push them, which is a nice feature for seniors with vision problems. It also has a big easy to read color display screen that offers large text with different color themes. Other handy features include two speed dial buttons, shortcut buttons to texting and the camera, a powerful two-way speakerphone, and a

ICE (in case of emergency) button on the back of the phone that will automatically dial one preprogrammed number. The Doro 626 sells for $50 with service plans starting at $10 per month, and no long-term contract. They even offer discounts to AARP members. Another budget-friendly cellphone you should look into is the Snapfon ezTWO for seniors (snapfon.com, 800-937-1532), which costs under $20, with a $35 activation fee, no contract, and monthly service plans that start at $10. If you don’t want the Snapfon service plan (you can go through AT&T or T-Mobile), the phone is $80. This is a bar-style phone that provides big buttons, a color screen, enhanced volume with a speaker phone, a speaking keypad, and an SOS emergency alert button on the back of the phone that can sound an alert when pushed and held down for five seconds. It then sends a text message to as many as five emergency contacts and calls those contacts in order until the call is answered. Or, for an additional $15 per month you can subscribe to their SOS monitoring service that will dispatch help as needed. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book. He receives no financial compensation for his product and service recommendations.

The North County Inland Center, 15905 Pomerado Road in Poway, is the place to be on Mondays and Wednesdays for fitness, friendships, films and more. Membership is only $40 for an entire year ($50 for couples) and entitles members to attend most activities absolutely free. A hot, kosher catered lunch can be purchased for only $7. Adults 60-plus can take part in a specially designed fitness class from 10 to 11 a.m. The 11 a.m. Showcase features a variety performances, lectures or workshops. Lunch is served at noon followed by a yoga, tai chi or a current film.

Scott Seiver’s 5-5 when the board ran out 9-2-Queen-King to end it. Rast celebrated the win with family and friends. He said it was even better than winning the 2011 Poker Player’s Championship at the World Series of Poker. Rast won $1.75 million for that victory and his second gold bracelet. You can catch Rast’s win in the $500,000 Super High Roller Bowl on television, as it will be replayed on Aug. 28 on the NBC Sports Network. Other big paydays for Rast include taking sixth in the inaugural Big One for One Drop at the World Series of Poker in 2012. That finish in the $1 million buy-in tournament earned him $1,621,333. In 2013, he captured the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic High Roller for $1,083,500. With this latest victory, Rast moves to No. 11 on the alltime money list. Rast, who attended Stanford University before dropping out in 2005 to play poker full time, is married with one child and lives in Las Vegas. He started getting serious about playing poker in the summer of his junior year at Stanford University. He studied the game and often played $3/$6 limit poker at Barona Casino. He then began playing online and winning large sums of cash. Rast is much more than a poker player now. He helped build zenpokermentoring.com, which is designed to make professional poker players available to teach the game to amateurs. He also does poker instruction during the World Series of Poker. Rast is also involved with 3Bet Poker Clothing. The site (store.3bet.us) sells different poker-related apparel. Rast, as of deadline Tuesday, is competing in the 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas.

a small play area, featuring a dollhouse and many other small toys. Ballard said the museum also hopes to expand the space where it holds its popular workshops, as it currently doesn’t allow for many people. “Our workshops are well attended, and we’d love to be able to fit in more people, she said. The next workshop the museum is holding will be on Saturday, July 11 about games and toys used in colonial times. Cost is $5 and includes a craft. Contact the museum at 858-486-1446 for workshop start times and more details. Museum hours are Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is open on Wednesday by appointment only for groups.

A report being prepared this week by White suggests the city might want to adopt a standard set by the American Water Works Association calling for between 55 and 88 gallons of water used per day. (The figure includes both indoor and outdoor usages.) Using both the high end estimate of 88 gallons, and U.S. Census figures showing the average Poway household has three people, a reasonable per-houshold water allocation might be 11 units of water per month, or 22 units per bi-monthly billing period, the report suggests. One unit represents 748 gallons of water. This would be a baseline for all residential water customers, White said. Any usage up to that point would not be subject to penalties. Once a family exceeds the baseline, it would be responsible for conserving 32 percent of any amount over that amount when compared to the same month of 2013. For example, say that a family used 100 units of water during August and September of 2013. If they used the same amount of water during the same months of 2015, they would receive a 22-unit baseline allowance credit on their bill, leaving 78 units of “non-essential water usage. Under the city’s drought mandate, the family can use 53 of those units but would pay a fine for the remaning 25 units. The staff-suggested fine would be $3.97 per unit, according to White. In this example, the fine would be $99.25. White said there were two key advantages of this plan: It rewards families that have already taken steps to reduce their water usage, and the city’s year-old water billing system can accommodate it. The down side of the system, is that it will be labor-intensive to implement as staff would anticipate many individual requests for information about how it works and for waivers in cases where, for example, a household included more than three residents. White on Tuesday stressed that nothing about the proposed baseline allocation plan is set in stone; that it is being presented as a possible “tool the council might want to implement in reaching to meet the state water-reduction mandate. Similar plans have been adopted by the Santa Fe Irrigation District and the Rainbow Municipal Water District.

and Pomerado Road and Adah Lane from Poway Road to 150 feet south of Poway Road. The city is spending nearly $2 million on the street work. Street work will require both partial and full closures, depending on the activities that are scheduled. Residents will be notified prior to the work so that they can adjust their travel needs accordingly. Motorists are advised to watch for message signs for the exact location of current work. Additional information will be posted to the city’s website, at poway.org/roads as it becomes available.

Couple gives $2.5M to SDSU

Bowling fundraiser

(CNS) — 4S Ranch residents Fred and Cristine Pierce have pledged a $2.5 million legacy gift to San Diego State University, the school announced this week. Fred Pierce, a 1988 SDSU finance and real estate graduate, designated the funds to benefit the College of Business Administration, Aztec athletics, the SDSU Alumni Association, Greek life and student scholarships. A legacy gift is a pledge of a future donation, such as through a will. The Pierces will also provide five years of current funding for their priority areas at an unspecified level, according to SDSU. “We’re creating several alumni scholarships to underscore the value of this university’s alumni and volunteerism,’’ said Fred Pierce, whose company owns and manages student housing across the United States. “We’re supporting Greek life with scholarships for fraternity and sorority members who don’t qualify for federal grants, but whose families can’t afford to finance their education,’’ Pierce said. “We’re giving to entrepreneurship, finance and real estate scholarships, and we’re supporting athletics because it’s a gateway to a continuing relationship between SDSU and its alumni.’’ Pierce, a former California State University trustee, has served on the boards of the Alumni Association, the Aztec Club, the College of Business Administration and the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate. One of his daughters just graduated from SDSU with a theater degree, and another plans to attend the school. His firm, Pierce Education Properties, ranks among the top 25 private owners of student housing in the country. Half of his workforce of 200 employees are students.

“I wanted to go (to Tech Trek) because it looked like a really cool experience that would open my mind to the field of STEM, she said. “I’ve taken a huge interest in science this year. A lot of what we studied was life science. I found it to be really interesting how the body works. During Tech Trek she was assigned math as her core subject, something Rylee said she would not have chosen, but is glad she took, since she was introduced to math patterns like Pascal’s triangle, 3-D shapes and other algebraic information that she will study in the future. “I have a head start, she said. As for other fun experiences, Rylee mentioned going out into Mission Bay to catch fish in a net, which they later released, and learning about algae. She also enjoyed staying in a UC San Diego dorm. “That was definitely a new experience, not what I was expecting, Rylee said.

Business renovations completed BY EMILY SORENSEN Perry Ford of Poway and the Poway Salvation Army are both enjoying renewed customer satisfaction after undergoing long-awaited remodels. Perry Ford of Poway, 12740 Poway Road, recently opened its new building, while the Salvation Army, 13020 Poway Road, reopened on June 25 after a month-long closure while it did an interior remodel. “This has been a long time coming, said Mario Lopez, the general manager of Perry Ford of Poway. “I’m glad we waited as long as we did, so we could get the nicest facility possible. The new building includes the sales of fices, business offices, service center, parts boutique, customer lounge and finance of fices. It is 17,500 square feet and has been built next to the existing 14,500-square-foot repair center. A central feature is the 30-by-100-foot-wide cur ved glass window wall, as well as the 35-foot clock tower. The remodel plans were approved by the City Council in August 2013. One of the highlights is the new customer lounge, which includes comfortable seating, a flatscreen television and free Starbucks coffee and hot chocolate, as well as free hot tea. The lounge also includes free wifi and an internet table for people to work on their laptops

Customers shop at the remodeled Salvation Army store. while they wait. Lopez said the staff moved in about three weeks ago. Stage two of the remodel, which includes the demolition of the old building and turning the space into parking and display for vehicles, as well as landscaping, will begin Monday and should last for 75 days. The reaction to the new building has been “really strange, said Lopez, as it so overshadows the old building that customers think the old building is a storage facility or garage. “It’s comfortable here (in the new facility), he said. “It’s quiet and welcoming, and it’s proactive to doing business the right way. The Salvation Army is also enjoying renewed customer satisfaction after its remodel. “It’s been a long time coming, said Delita Lovett, the

community relations manager. “We’ve been here in Poway for 21 years, and in that time we’ve done very little inside. This was a much-needed update. Our customers are very excited. The Salvation Army installed new high-traffic carpeting and high-traffic flooring, did touch-up painting, remodeled the dressing rooms to better be handicapped accessible, added all new shelving and remodeled the cash register counter with a new counter top, new jewelry cases and added a lower counter section to make it more wheelchairfriendly. They also added more handicapped parking outside, and have come to an agreement with the owners of the empty former Wendy’s lot next door to allow Salvation Army customers to park there.

y last guest column, “Charge on SDG&E bill is a discriminatory tax” appeared in your newspaper on May 8, 2014. The article focused on the “Public Purpose Program” (PPP), a reasonable charge, based on actual electricity generated from the period of 20042009. SDG&E’s billing statement defined it as a “simple low-income and energy efficiency program.” From 2009 to May 2014, the PPP program became excessively costly with an extraordinarily incomprehensible complex definition. The PPP “tax in disguise” constituted 38 percent of our total electrical charges. Ironically, in May-June 2014, SDG&E reduced the PPP charges back to the pre-2009 period and restored the original simple definition – a complete flip-flop. Analyzing our billing statement from the period from May 2014 to May 2015, the newly imposed “chameleon tax” now called TRAC has a complex definition and has simply replaced the outrageous charges that were once under the PPP program. Stunningly, our average electrical generation charge was 33 percent of our total electrical charges. Obviously, 67 percent of our total electrical charges constitute excessive and discriminatory charges above the initial electrical generation charge. Of importance is the fact that the distribution charges are very high. Distribution charges are for maintenance, emergency crews, and etc. and should be shared by all residents. With the egregious four-tier system, the electrical usage charges were as follows: 17 cents, 20 cents, 37 cents and 39 cents per kWh. Obviously this is discriminatory to the so-called energy “hogs” for the following reason: excessive hotter temperatures inland demand greater usage for all residents. For those who are home regularly, this is especially true (retirees, those who work from home, the disabled, and children who are home during summer months.) Therefore, they bear the brunt of Tier 3 and 4 charges. Frequently, homes have multi-heating and cooling zones, and therefore are efficient most of the year. Where is the justification, therefore, for imposing 67 percent excessive electrical charges, including the high distribution charges? Interestingly, the average cost per kWh in Scottsdale is 11.96 cents. Nationwide, according to “Consumer Reports” the average cost per kWh is 12.4 cents. San Diego is clearly not even close to those averages even though it is considered to have one of the most ideal climates year-around. In California there is now a possibility of the passage of the “Residential Rate Reform Bill (AB 327). However, there is a caveat. Another “chameleon tax” would then be under the CARE program, a major component of this bill and would impose a 30-35 percent assistance measure for low-income residents. Who is paying for this CARE program and how? The ever present elusive “chameleon taxes” are a product of our state legislature in addition to other agencies. Their nominal recommendations for reducing energy usage is disingenuous, since the excessively high charges far exceed the actual electrical energy generated charge. Their reaction to the energy situation seems to be “Go solar or we will penalize you.” Stenstrom is a Poway resident.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Remember these truths Columnist Dick Lyles (June 25) is right to worry about America’s “morale” problem. But if we want to squarely place blame for the decline in our morale these past 50 years, let’s begin with Ronald Reagan, who said “Government is the problem” and those like him who continue to attack anything good our nation would like to do for ourselves through our government, whether it is Social Security, Medicare — or the entire New Deal that brought us infrastructure development, fair wages, stabilized food prices and production and ushered in the greatest period for the middle class in our history. Those who undermine morale are those who say we can’t have good things, like sleek new passenger trains, health insurance for all, higher pay for workers, or that we can’t rebuild our nation’s infrastructure. Those who also hurt our morale are those who say “Globalization is inevitable” and say our workers have to accept less, as if we can’t restore tariffs to promote domestic industry. It is time to reject the pessimism from those who say “You can’t fight City Hall...” and those who accept corporate dominance in our political system with a cynical shrug. Believing in our ability to act through the institutions our Founders provided is the best way to restore our nation’s morale. As Thomas Jefferson said, right after “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”: We “institute” governments to promote these very values. Also, our Constitution implores us to “promote the general welfare…” We do well to remember these truths.

not. I would suggest that the difference is the short attention span most of us seem to have for any cause or surge of emotion. In 2003, we were still reeling from 9-11, and we were still being told we were in a war to wipe out weapons of mass destruction. I worked in a hardware store at the time of 9-11, and the line to buy a flag was out the door. Maintaining that level of devotion began to wear thin. Most homes returned to “patriotic holidays only” flag flying, as they had been for many, many years before our national day of terror. Our flag flying values are very much what they were in the 50s. I was a child then, and loved helping my grandfather display Old Glory on holidays. No one on our street flew the flag every day, but on those special holidays each home displayed Old Glory in some way. These memories, by the way, encompass Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy, so fondness for an administration does not seem to be a factor.

Let public help with memorial

Our flag-flying values

Regarding building a suitable memorial for Tony Gwynn, how about the City of Poway setting up a citizens private donation fund to combine resources with the public funds so that a more-than-suitable, permanent remembrance of this great man, father, husband Baseball Hall of Fame member and Poway resident can be forever in our thoughts? I bet at least half or our residents will gladly contribute. And why limit the memorial to just one? The city limit sign should not only read “The City in the Country” but include “The home of Tony Gwynn.”

In his column last week Rob Weinberg wondered why fewer flags fly on homes in his neighborhood than flew back in 2003. He suggests it’s political... that perhaps “patriotic neighbors” have their flags tucked away, waiting for a change in administration. I hope his tongue is firmly in his cheek, but I fear it is

Pope's position on environment invites intelligent discussion

F

or months we heard ad nauseam predictions about the content of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment. Most speculation was driven by the mainstream media and consisted of smug anticipation that the Pope would come out unequivocally on the side of the global warming crowd. They prophesied he would tell a billion Catholics to toe the line regarding humanity’s effort to cook the globe into oblivion. When finally released, the encyclical confounded many, because what the pope actually proposed was much more thoughtful, less one-sided and considerably more comprehensive in scope than anyone expected. The letter was titled Laudato Si, which means “Praise Be to You,” with the subtitle, “On the care for our common home.” It is 184 pages long and mentions global warming only 12 times. It addresses issues from recognizing and valuing the difference between masculinity and femininity, the sanctity of human work, and the fact that overpopulation is not the problem, to such issues as how important it is to change the culture rather than politics, how true ecology requires true anthropology and respect for human dignity, and how important it is to stop current cynicism, secularism and immorality. He even addresses abortion: “Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion.” The pope also says, “There are certain environmental issues where it is not easy to achieve a broad consensus. Here I would state once more that the Church does not presume to settle scientific questions or to replace politics. But I am concerned to encourage an honest and open debate so that particular interests or ideologies will not prejudice the common good.” He continues, “We must regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it. We have had enough of immorality and the mockery of ethics, goodness, faith and honesty. It is time to acknowledge that lighthearted superficiality has done us no good. When the foundations of social life are corroded, what ensues are battles over conflicting interests, new forms of

Dick Lyles GET REAL violence and brutality, and the obstacles to the growth and care for the environment.” These concerns address what is happening in America today. The polarization that recently has crept into society is destroying us. We have a leading presidential candidate who openly flaunts the values of ethics and honesty. The lighthearted superficiality that characterizes almost all political discussions makes our electoral process a joke. Our battles over conflicting interests lack intelligent thinking on both sides. They are superficial to the point that today’s electorate suffers from intellectual anemia. Only people in a coma could not have noticed the new forms of violence and brutality emerging in response to our pathetic policies and emerging political attitudes. The most depressing aspect of the pope’s encyclical is that it calls upon people to “live wisely, think deeply, and love generously.” He calls us to help make modern media “sources of cultural progress for humanity.” He also calls us to develop real relationships with others, with all the challenges those relationships entail so we can responsibly engage both people and nature and make the world a better place. These calls are disheartening to hear because today’s leaders and our society lack the motivation or competence to pursue. The overarching goal of the encyclical is to end the platitude-laden, superficial, political banter de jour and demand meaningful, penetrating and intelligent discussions about the challenges facing the world. Read Laudato Si with an open mind and then let’s all talk. Lyles, a Poway resident, is a business/management consultant and best-selling author. Santaluz man fatally shot by police BY PAULINE REPARD Special to PomeradoNews.com A San Diego police officer fatally shot a man who charged at officers with a knife at a Santaluz condominium on July 2, authorities said. The name of the 60-year-old man who died had not been released as of Tuesday. Police also withheld the name of the officer who fired, but said he is a 24-year department veteran. Residents called police about 11:40 p.m. to report an assault at a condo complex on Via Fiesta, a few blocks off Camino del Sur, homicide Lt. Paul Rorrison said in a news release. A man at the complex told officers he’d been attacked by a resident. Officers knocked on the door of the suspected assailant and a man came out holding a knife, Rorrison said. He said officers ordered the man to drop the knife, but he “immediately charged at one officer and attempted to stab him.â€? One officer fired a single round at the man, wounding him in the torso. Officers started life-saving measures until paramedics got there, Rorrison said. The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he died. ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Jackson helps Surf reach nationals BY MICHAEL BOWER Most youngsters hit the pitch and the last thing they want to do is be the goalkeeper. But not Jacob Jackson. He has been fascinated with the position since he was 3. “When I first started, the first place I wanted to play is keeper,” said Jacob, who is the younger brother of the Seattle Mariners’ Alex Jackson. “When I was young, my brother and I would watch soccer and I just loved how the goalies blocked the balls. When I first started, nobody went over to the net. I went there and just fell in love with the spot.” And became quite good. Jackson, who is 15 and will be a sophomore at Rancho Bernardo High in the fall, posted five shutouts and allowed just three goals in seven games to help the San Diego Surf boys under-15 team capture the Far West Regional IV championship in Boise, Idaho in late June. The victor y earned them a spot in the Youth Soccer National Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The prestigious tournament is set to begin with round robin play on

Jacob Jackson has always known he wanted to be a goalkeeper. July 21 and will conclude with the finals on July 26. “My team and I are really excited to participate in the national championships because it is the first time ever doing it and it may be our last, but who knows,” said the 6-foot, 180-pound Jackson. “The pressure is on us because we won the regional and we now represent the entire west region.” The pressure was on Jackson in the semifinal game of the West Regional. A scoreless game in regulation and overtime ended up going into penalty kicks. Each goalkeeper blocked one shot in the first five. Then in sudden death

PKs, Jackson clinched the win with a block. “I get very nervous when it comes down to penalty kicks,” he said. “That final PK I decided to go left and I happened to guess correctly. I was nervous because the guy was showing like he was going to go right, but I just went left and saved it.” Surf went on to capture the

tournament title with a 2-1 victory in the final. “Jacob had a great weekend for us,” Surf coach Hector Aguilar said. “He saved us in the quarterfinals against Sherman Oaks with some great saves and he saved us against New Mexico in the semifinals.” Aguilar says Jackson’s deceptive speed and athleticism is what makes him a great keeper. “People look at him and see this big kid, but he is flexible and has really good speed and can jump,” Aguilar said. “This whole season and since last year he has not given up a goal over his head.” Many of the Surf players were brought to tears after the final whistle blew and they were crowned champions. Now they are hoping to raise enough money to be able to get to Tulsa to play in the naSEE JACKSON, Page B3

YOUTH SOFTBALL

RBGSL tourney continues to grow BY MICHAEL BOWER The Rancho Bernardo Girls Softball League’s Grand Slam Summer Jam Tournament started as a small fundraiser in 1985. It has since grown into one of the largest invitational tournaments in the county. Some 48 teams from all over Southern California will converge to San Diego’s Rancho Bernardo Community Park this weekend for the 31st annual Grand Slam Summer Jam Tournament. The three-day event, which starts Fri-

day and concludes Sunday, features a gold and silver bracket. The gold bracket has four age divisions (8U, 10U, 12U and 14U) and the silver bracket has three divisions (8U, 10U and 12U). “We use all eight fields at the RB Community Park,” explained Lora Starry, who is this year’s tournament director and has been involved with the tournament for over 20 years. “The tournament has really evolved. We have kids that started playing in it at age 7 and are now coaching their own kids in it. It has been fun to watch the tournament evolve throughout the years.” There will be teams from as far north as Northridge coming to play in the tournament. There will also be a heavy dose of local teams competing for the coveted championship trophy, as Po-

way, Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch all will be represented. Each team is guaranteed to play three games. There is a round of pool play and then advancing teams compete in a single elimination tournament. Last year’s winners were Chino Hills (8U gold bracket and 8U silver), Bonita Valley (10U silver), Laguna Nigel (12U gold), Escondido (12U silver) and San Pedro (14U gold). The tournament is not all about softball, as there will be other fun competitions. There will be a rock paper scissor tournament, fielding competitions, dodgeball and many more games. “There are a lot of vendors and it is just a fun tournament,” Starry said. “I still remember my girls playing in it and now my granddaughter is playing.”

PREP GOLF

Junior World golfers to invade RB courses BY MICHAEL BOWER The Junior World Golf Championships have been helping aspiring young golfers blossom for over 45 years now. It showcases the top players from all over the world in San Diego, and this year Rancho Bernardo will be hosting three different age groups at three different courses. The 7/8-year-old boys will be playing at Oaks North Golf Course, the 11/12 girls will be at Bernardo Heights Country Club and the 13/14 girls will be at The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. Spectators can watch for free. “This is not one of those tournaments that anyone can sign up for to play,” said Roger Porzak, former president and current board member of San Diego Junior Golf Association. “All of these players have gone through some type of qualifying and at some point have earned their way in.” In other words, these are the best the world has to offer in each age group. Many current professional players have competed in the Junior World Golf Championships and odds are a few from the field this year will one day turn pro. “No doubt about it,” Porzak said. Opening ceremonies for the Junior World Golf Championships are Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Course. There will be over 1,200 participants representing 56 countries and 42 states in the six different age divisions for boys and girls. All age divisions will be teeing off early Tuesday and will continue play Wednesday and Thursday. The 15-17-year-old boys and girls divisions, which will be played at Torrey Pines Golf Course, concludes on Friday. This is the first year Bernardo Heights Country Club will be hosting an age group. “It is really great for the community,” Porzak said. “We have a lot of action going all over in Rancho Bernardo and I know the members at Bernardo Heights Country Club are really excited about having an event. We have already seen kids coming to town to get some extra practice rounds in.” Porzak said the 11/12 girls at Bernardo Heights Country Club has 75 players in the field. Lauren Williams, 12, of Escondido is one of the top-ranked local players. She is expected to be in the running for the championship. Her brother, Connor Williams, is playing in the 9/10 field. Porzak encourages parents to bring their children out to watch the golf. “It is great to have other kids come out and watch,” he said. “So many times I have talked with kids who haven’t played in it and then a year later they said that watching it really provided them with the motivation they needed to take their game to the next level.” Poway High’s Mason Schulze will be competing in the 15-17-year-old boys division. The soon-to-be senior is coming off his beat season of high school golf, finishing in the top-10 at the CIF state tournament. Del Norte High soon-to-be senior Annika Chickering will be in the 15-17-year-old girls division, which plays at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Rancho Bernardo High will be represented by soon-to-be junior Cece DeMatteo and soon-to-be sophomore Calista Reyes. The two powered the Broncos to a third-place finish in the CIF state tournament last season. “I am super excited to play in the tournament,” said DeSEE GOLF, Page B3

RBHS, Poway grads in all-star game BY MICHAEL BOWER Tucker Reed tries his best not to dwell on the Rancho Bernardo High football team’s 14-7 loss to El Capitan in the CIF San Diego Section Division II championship game last season. But the recently-graduated quarterback has been thinking about it a little more often the last few weeks. That’s because he will get another shot against some of the Vaqueros and their head coach in the 25th annual Alex Spanos AllStar Classic Saturday at 6 p.m. at San Diego Mesa College. “It is going to be a fun game, said Reed, who will attend Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in the fall. “It will be nice to play with the kids I played against and I also will be getting another shot at some of the El Cap kids. The game features the top graduated seniors from last season in a North vs. South format. Mt. Carmel’s John Anderson is coaching the North and El Capitan’s Ron Burner is coaching the South. Reed along with former

Former Rancho Bernardo quarterback Tucker Reed, left, and former Poway defensive and offensive lineman Jake Michaels, right, will be playing in the Spanos All-Star Game. File photos teammate at Rancho Bernardo Evan Jones, a defensive end, and Poway’s Jake Michaels, an offensive and defensive lineman, will represent the local area on the North squad. For Reed, who has been playing sports since he was 6 and will likely not be playing any at Cal Poly, this is one last chance to suit it up.

“This is just one of those things where my football career is over and I am taking advantage of the opportunity to play one more game, said Reed, who will study construction management and participate in the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at Cal Poly. “I am just glad that I get to play another game. Reed will likely rotate with

one or two other quar terbacks throughout the game. He admitted that winning is not the top priority in an allstar game like this, but it still is somewhat important. “I just really want to beat the El Capitan coach, he said with a laugh. “But a lot of it is just for fun. It is not like if we win or lose it will change anything in your life, but I am definitely one of those people that loves to win. He did plenty of that at Rancho Bernardo his senior season. Reed led the Broncos to their first Palomar League championship since 2004 and first section title game appearance since 2001. My greatest memory from last season is probably the first game because we knew we were going to be good, but not exactly how good and then we just came out and annihilated San Pasqual, Reed said. “That game and then beating Ramona on senior night was awesome. Tickets to the game are $10 for adults and $5 for juniors. Last year the South defeated the North 21-17.

YOUTH SOFTBALL

RBGSL 8U team reaches state tourney BY MICHAEL BOWER Many girls go through their entire youth without reaching a state softball championship tournament. The 12 players on the Rancho Bernardo Girls Softball League’s 8-and-under All-Star team will not have to worry about that. The squad, comprised of many just in their second year playing the sport, punched their ticket to the ASA ‘B’ League State Championships by taking third place in the North San Diego ‘B’ District Tournament in Vista on June 28. The RBGSL 8U All-Star team will open play in the 24-team, double-elimination state championship tournament in Lancaster on Friday. It is the only team in the RBGSL to reach a state tournament this season. “It is tremendous,” said head coach Joe Cascio of the accomplishment. “It has been a whole team effort. All 12 of them have contributed. They are really excited.” The last time a RBGSL 8U All-Star team reached the state tournament was two years ago. The last team from the league to reach a state tournament was the 14U All-Star team last year. This year’s RBGSL 8U All-

The RBGSL 8U All-Star team qualifed for the state championships by taking third place in the North San Diego 'B' District Tournament. Star team went 3-2 in the district tournament, including a 13-3 win over Rancho Penasquitos in what ultimately was the third-place game. The final score is a bit misleading, as RBGSL used a nine-run fourth to turn a one-run lead into a 10-run advantage. “It was one of those games that we just got contribution from everyone,” Cascio said. “Ever y girl batted in that fourth inning and it was really a whole team effort. I think they go so excited that they wore themselves out celebrating and we lost the next game to Vista 3-2.” Carlsbad ended up taking the title and Carlsbad fin-

ished in second place. The fact that Rancho Bernardo took third is even more impressive considering the team is full of girls with only a few years of experience. “The core group of this team started last year on the 8U Silver,” Cascio said. “A lot of them have never even played softball before last year. Over the last 12 months they have come together as a team ... It is like a family. The girls love each other and the parents all love each other.” Rancho Bernardo has not won a tournament yet, but it has three top-three finishes in eight tournaments. It is led by pitcher Taylor Clark,

who has 191 strikeouts and a 1.02 earned run average in 18 starts and 24 appearances. “She might be the best pitcher in North County,” Cascio said. “If not No. 1, then No. 2 for sure. She throws hard, throws lots of strikes and mixes in a changeup. We expect her to hit the 200 strikeout mark in the state tournament.” Clark has been backed by a defense that Cascio says is constantly complemented by opposing coaches. Second baseman Alexis Titucci and shortstop Alexis Huey lead the way, gobbling everything up in the middle of the diamond. Clark is also one of the top hitters along with Abigail Tripp and Alex Brunette. Tripp is the power hitter, while Brunette hits for a high average. Cascio is proud of his entire team. “It is cool to have a team of 12 great players versus having just two or three great players,” he said. “We have some stars, but I can honestly say that all the girls are making contributions.”

Entertainment Christine Parker to perform at Poway Library Saturday BY EMILY SORENSEN Come down at 2 p.m. Saturday to the Poway Library, 13137 Poway Road, and enjoy a free concert. Acoustic folk-pop musician Christine Parker will be performing a mix of covers and her own original music. The concert is part of the San Diego County Library’s free, awardwinning Acoustic Showcase concert series. Parker is a San Diego-based musician who was born and raised in Fallbrook, and returned to San Diego several years ago after going to school and living in the Midwest for some time. Parker said that she’s been performing music professionally for about seven or eight years, but has been a musician all her life. “I’ve always been a musician, she said. “I began playing the piano when I was four. Parker said that music comes naturally to her. “It’s comfortable to me, she said. “It’s easier to get things across in song than it is conversation. The hardest part is that I’ve always been really, really shy and I still am. Performing was a hurdle I had to get over. When she’s not performing music, Parker works for a medical device company. She

sionally) full-time, said Parker. “I just returned from a mini-tour in San Luis Obispo and on the coast.

Parker said it was difficult to define her musical style, but called herself “acoustic folkpop. Some of her influences include Colbie Caillat, Ingrid Michaelson, and Brandi Carlile. She’s released two albums of her own original music, a six-song EP, “The Journey Home, in early 2012 and a full-length album, “Looking Glass, in 2013. Her album is available on CDBaby, iTunes, and Amazon.com. Parker has also had several of her songs used in TV and film, including shows on Nick Jr. and TLC, Jimmy Kimmel Live, a French film, and a Mitsubishi Outlander commercial airing in Taiwan. She has previously performed in Poway with the Eve Selis Band at a house concert several years ago, and said she’s looking forward to performing at the Poway Library. “I’ve previously performed at the Fallbrook library, and I’m always surprised at the turnout the concerts at the library get, she said. “I’m excited they got me out to Poway this year. Parker said she will be performing both covers and songs from her album at the concert on Saturday. “It’ll just be me and my acoustic guitar, she said. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (888) 988-6736 or visit this Internet Web site: salestrack.tdsf. com, using the file number assigned to this case F546314 F. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid. CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, OR A CHECK DRAWN BY A STATE OR FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR SAVINGS BANK SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102 OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE: All right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 16311 Coyote Creek Trail, Poway, CA 92064, A.P.N.: 278-210-25-00. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $891,982.18. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-9608299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource. com/MortgageServices/ DefaultManagement/ TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case

Pursuant to Section 15162 of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guidelines, a subsequent EIR or any additional environmental review or notice is not required since the project is within the scope of the Hidden Valley Ranch Environmental Impact Report (EIR), which was certified in conjunction with the original approval of the project on November 18, 2003 (SCH #2001121009). Seven home safety tips for seniors By Michael Sise, M.D.

I

f you are an older adult, it’s never too late to take steps to safeguard your home to prevent an accidental fall that could cause serious injuries. For most people, being at home means feeling comfortable and safe — you are familiar with your surroundings and know how to get around the house easily, even in the dark. As you get older, however, you may naturally begin to lose some of Dr. Michael Sise that comfort level. When eyesight, hearing, agility, strength and balance aren’t quite what they used to be, taking a few simple steps can make your home safer and easier to navigate, as well as help you in an emergency. One of the most important safety concerns is fall prevention. This is important at any age, but especially among seniors. Each year, one in every three adults age 65 and older suffers a fall. Falls are among the leading causes of both fatal and nonfatal injuries such as debilitating hip fractures and severe head trauma. Fortunately, most falls are preventable with a little planning and caution. Here are some tips to help improve safety at home. • Adequate lighting is one of the best ways to prevent falls. If areas of the home are not well lit, have additional lights installed or add lamps. Glow-in-the-dark switches or soundactivated lights can help as well. Place night lights in the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and hallways. • Avoid unnecessary clutter. Arrange a clear path into a room. Move furniture so the path is clear, and remove other obstacles such as electrical cords. Keep objects such as shoes, books and bags off of the floor. • Check wall-to-wall carpeting for bumps or wrinkles. Ensure that tile or wood floors are not slippery. Avoid area rugs, which can slide. If you want to use them, secure them with double-sided carpet tape, especially around the edges. • Check that railings along staircases are secure. Ideally, install handrails on both sides

of the stairs. Place colored or reflective tape at the top of each step to make steps easier to see. • In the kitchen, keep everyday items in lower cabinets that are easily accessible. If you need to reach into a higher cabinet, use a sturdy step stool with a rail for support. • Install grab bars in the bathroom near the toilet and along the bathtub or shower. Place non-slip adhesive strips or rubber mats on the tub or shower floor. Consider a walk-in bathtub to eliminate the need to climb in and out of the tub. • Make sure to have easy access to a phone. Place cordless phones within easy reach from the main living areas, bedroom and kitchen or consider carrying a mobile phone with you. Keep emergency numbers nearby, or program them into the phone. Consider wearing a device that will call for help in case you can’t get to the phone. In addition to “fall-proofing” your home, ask your doctor or pharmacist to review any medications you take to see if they may cause dizziness or affect coordination. Also, have your vision checked at least once a year. Vision problems may increase your chances of falling. Regular exercise is an excellent way to improve your balance and coordination and build strength—all of which can help prevent falls. Tai chi, water aerobics and other low-impact, low-speed exercises are good options. Check with your local hospital, gym or community center to see what’s available. Download a free emergency information app to your mobile phone or computer. ICE: In Case of Emergency, available for both Android phones and iPhones, stores your most important health information such as medications, allergies, physicians’ names and emergency contacts. Emergency Kit, for Windows Phone smartphones, is a similar option. If you do fall and are injured, call 911 for help right away. Even if it doesn’t seem serious, the sooner you get checked and treated for any injuries, the better — especially to the head. Michael Sise, M.D. is medical director of trauma services at Scripps Mercy Hospital. For more information, visit www.scripps.org/CNP or call 858-207-4317.

Clothes washer rebate process streamlined As part of the regional response to severe drought conditions, the San Diego County Water Authority and San Diego Gas & Electric have teamed up to streamline the rebate process for qualifying high-efficiency clothes washers. Residents in SDG&E’s service area can now receive two rebates totaling $135 per high-efficiency clothes washer using one application at www.SoCalWaterSmart.com. Previously, customers needed to complete two applications to receive rebates of $85 and $50. Clothes washing is among the most waterintensive activities inside a typical home, accounting for 22 percent of home water use, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. High-efficiency clothes washers (HEWs) use 65 percent less water and 55 percent less energy than conventional clothes washers, according to the California Urban

Water Conservation Council. The water savings for each residential HEW can be as much as 11,000 gallons per year. HEWs save energy because they use more efficient motors, require less hot water and reduce the amount of drying time needed for clean clothes. “The streamlined rebate process offers an opportunity for our customers to save money and make the most of every drop this year and into the future,” said Caroline Winn, SDG&E’s vice president of customer services. “Providing more ways to conserve energy and reduce water use can help the region become more drought-proof.” The water authority and SDG&E have worked together for more than two decades on programs including the distribution of low-flow showerheads and rebates for energy-efficiency audits of water agency facilities such as pump stations.

Homes What to know now about buying a home (StatePoint) — Better employment prospects, rising home values and historically low mortgage rates are driving improvements in housing markets across the countr y. If these facts are tempting you to take the plunge, you’re not alone. Keep in mind, buying a home is a major commitment and shouldn’t be under taken without careful consideration, say experts. “While homeownership is often referred to as the ‘American Dream’ for good reason, it isn’t necessarily everyone’s right move,” says Christina Boyle, Freddie Mac senior vice president and head of singlefamily sales and relationship management. Understanding the pros and cons of homeownership can help you make a wise decision. For potential home buyers, Boyle offers the following insights: Ownership pros From paint colors to major remodeling projects, one of the best parts of ownership is having a place that is uniquely yours to customize. Consider the financial benefits, as well. At tax time, you may be able to deduct the interest on your mortgage and property taxes, offsetting a portion of the cost of ownership. Stability is another major draw. With fixed-rate mortgages, your monthly principal and interest payments will stay the same for the entire period of the loan. This will make it easier to plan and budget over time, as opposed to renting, where rates are largely beyond your control. Furthermore,

Freddie Mac recommends that potential buyers be able to afford at least 3 percent of the down payment and related closing costs. Also, evaluate your life plans. Are you planning on staying in your home for at least five years? Crunch the numbers

Creating equity for the future will help provide stability and security for your family. creating equity for the future will help provide stability and security for your family. Ownership cons Being your own landlord makes you responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of your property. Budget for maintenance costs — from little fixes to such major, costly issues as roof replacement and water pipe repair. Other home-related costs to keep in mind include utilities, homeowner association dues, homeowner insurance premiums and property taxes. Just like with your rent,

your mortgage and utilities should be paid on time. This will help you maintain good credit and is essential if you want to borrow again in the future for home renovations, new cars or student loans. Self-assessment An honest self-assessment can help you determine if buying a home is right for you. Do you have a reliable income, good credit and documentation to verify your savings? Do you have the money required for home maintenance and a cash reserve that can withstand a loss of job, illness or other financial setback?

San Diego home prices up; have doubled in 16 years SAN DIEGO (CNS) — Home prices in San Diego County edged up 0.6 percent in April, part of a broader increase in housing costs around the country, according to the Standard & Poor’s Case-Schiller Home Price Indices. The indices, released last week, were created by taking the price of housing in 20 large markets across the U.S. in January 2000, assigning them a value of 100, and tracking their subsequent rise and fall. San Diego’s index stood at 209.88 in April, representing more than a doubling in value over 16 years. The increase is the third-fastest in the country, behind Los Angeles and San Francisco, and barely edging out the 209.82 mark in Washington, D.C. The national 20-city index rose 1.1 percent in April to 177.01. For the year, the increase was 4.9 percent. San Diego area home prices are up 4.5 percent since April 2014. “Home prices continue to rise across the country, but the pace is not accelerating,’’ said David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “Moreover, consumer expectations are consistent with the current pace of price increases,’’ Blitzer said. “A recent national survey published by the New York Fed showed the average expected price increase among both owners and renters is 4.1 percent.’’
