the heels of several public hearings where neighbors of a proposed 22-unit veterans’ housing project contended that building the new units would worsen an already-bad situation, especially in the mornings and afternoons when area schools start

and end. At the Aug. 16 meeting, City Council members agreed that a traffic study should be conducted. A staff report recommends that a firm used by the city for traffic engineering services be commissioned to assess traffic on the major roadway

between Midland and Espola roads. Included in the study would be intersection counts at seven intersections, documentation of U-turns east of Espola Road, parking/waiting on Tierra Bonita Road SEE TWIN PEAKS, A11

New toddler playground open in RB park BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK There is a new playground geared for 2- to 5-year-olds at Rancho Bernardo Community Park, thanks to the local Kiwanis Club. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday evening to celebrate the playground’s completion. It is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and features three items — a play structure with several climbing features plus three slides, a merry-go-round and a chair-style swing set. There is also a premium rubber mat surface that makes it easy for wheelchairs and strollers to be rolled right up to the play equipment in addition to sandy areas. The playground replaces the park’s aging and non-ADA compliant toddler playground. Nearby there is an existing playground designed for older children. The $125,000 toddler playground project is one of three the Kiwanis Club of Los Rancheros (also known as the Rancho Bernardo Kiwanis Club) undertook to celebrate its international parent organization’s 100th anniversary. With an organizational focus on children, Kiwanian Julie Sleeper said the RB club wanted to do something for children in the community. She was chairwoman of the playground committee. The playground is one of three projects the club announced in July 2015 it would undertake as part of its $100,000 commitment for the anniversary celebration that year. The $50,000 dedicated to the playground came from the club’s Vic Porter Fund, created from money the 20-plus years RB Kiwanian left the club upon his death. The playground is dedicated in his name. In 2015, then-club president John Sleeper said the members also wanted to give a $40,000 grant to Rady Children’s Hospital to create a pediatric protocol training program for first responders and contribute $10,000 toward playground improvements at a park in Carmel Mountain Ranch. “Kiwanis is a volunteer organization whose members’ primary purpose is to help the children from our community, our city, our county, our state, our nation and globally,”

ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK

The $125,000 playground project was led by the Kiwanis Club of Los Rancheros. Julie Sleeper said, noting the club’s numerous projects it undertakes and sponsors on behalf of children. As for the Rancho Bernardo park’s playground, the remainder of the $125,000 cost came from two government grants. The City of San Diego contributed $50,000 (the playground is in a city-owned park) and the County of San Diego contributed $25,000. City Councilman Mark Kersey and County Supervisor Dave Roberts were among those present at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Their generous participation and support is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished through collaboration between public and private groups,” she said. Roberts told those gathered that the playground “ties in perfectly with the Live Well San Diego initiative. It’s such a wonderful enhancement, rebuilding what was here.” “I’m glad this day has come,” Kersey said. “I knew the Kiwanians do great things and this is really good to see.”

Maranatha High’s Worship Band wins Poway Days Parade BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Maranatha Christian High School’s Worship Band director said his 16 students only planned on representing their campus in the Poway Days Parade, not winning its band competition. Yet that is exactly what they did on Sept. 10. When judged against some of the region’s longtime championship high school bands, Maranatha came in first among the seven entrants. An honorable mention award went to the San Diego Korean Pungmul Institute, said Pauline Getz, parade chairwoman. The other competitors in the parade were the Del Norte High School Nighthawks Marching Band, Mt. Carmel Marching Sundevils, Poway High’s Emerald Brigade, Rancho Bernardo High’s Royal Regiment and Westview High School Gold Marching Band. “(The students) freaked out; we all freaked out,” Maranatha Band Director Mike Holguin said when describing their reaction upon learning Maranatha won. “We’re super excited because we’re not anywhere as prestigious as Rancho Bernardo, which has such a big program ... (and is well-known) in Southern California.” Holguin knows first-hand about the Royal Regiment’s stature in the music community, having spent 13 years as one of its teachers and he is still writing its field show despite joining Maranatha’s staff last year. He is also well-familiar with the other Poway Unified bands’ abilities since he has been a clinician for all of them in the past. “This was a complete surprise to me,” he

Maranatha Christian High School Worship Band and Director Mike Holguin at the Poway Days Parade on Sept. 10. said. “Our original plan ... was to enter the parade. I did not want them to march because we’re just a 16-piece band. But I said if we could be put on a truck that would be a different story. “We just went out there to have a good time and did not think about the competition side at all,” he said. “What was really cool was that when we were in the parking lot with the other bands my phone blew up with text messages from the other teachers wishing me well,” he added. For the parade the band played a mix of Christian and secular music. The three numbers were “Feel It” by TobyMac, “This is Living” by Hillsong Young & Free, and “Come Sail Away” by Styx. A highlight video can be seen at https://vimeo.com/182472321. Maranatha’s high school music program has been around at least three years, he said. For

football games the Worship Band is joined by the school’s drumline and its junior high band in order to form a larger musical ensemble, dubbed The Pulse. The rest of the year, the band performs at the campus’ religious services every few weeks and in the spring semester focuses on creating an album. “We collaborate and write songs together, then record the album,” Holguin said. “That is the big draw for students to join.” Since winning the parade, however, Holguin said student interest in the program has increased. “These are exciting times for us. You can feel the energy around the campus. It’s a really cool buzz and spirit.” Because most of the band members are freshmen or sophomores, Holguin said he is looking forward to working with them for the next two or three years. The students are singers Selah Campbell, Katie Coil, William

On Tuesday, Pauline Getz, Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps president, presented the 2016 Poway Days Parade first place “best band” trophy to Mike Holguin. Collins, Katie Guldner, Ella Howe, Emera Sanchez and Morgan Volek. The rhythm section consists of Micah Kim (on guitar), Justin Gray (guitar and vocals), Emily Merkes (keyboard and vocals), Morgan Brown (bass) and Rory Darby (drums). The horn section has Aaron Elder (on trumpet), Andrew Etzweiler (tenor sax), Jacky Zhi (soprano sax) and Timothy Tripp (trombone). Though the band members have only been playing together since mid-August — the horn section was added this year — Holguin attributed their surprise success to having “great chemistry. (The students) are super talented and fired up to play. They come excited to class.”

Colorful Poway auto mural given reprieve BY STEVE DREYER The fate of a colorful mural painted on the side of a Poway Road auto repair business has been postponed for at least several months after the City Council placed it in the lap of a committee studying the future of the road. All five council members agreed during the Sept. 20 meeting that while they like the mural, painted last May for WOW Auto Care, 12255 Poway Road, allowing it to remain violates the business’s conditional use permit and, if allowed, might set a precedent that would be difficult to enforce. Business owner David Pike commissioned the mural. It shows various classic cars in service bays at the business. The mural contains no advertising lettering and was painted on a long wall that had previously been white. Pike reportedly paid $5,000 for the mural. The city sent Pike a notice on June 14 that the mural was “inconsistent with the paint and design of the previously approved conditional

The mural on the wall of WOW Auto Care. use permit.” A second notice was mailed on July 28 saying the bright colors used in the mural were contrary to “a muted color scheme with style and texture which reflect the traditional rural character of the community and natural environment.” Pike told the council that he had grown up in Poway and started his business five years ago in the back of his truck. His Poway Road location had been vacant for two years before

THE SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE

he signed a 20-year lease, he said. The mural was intended “specifically for art and for the pleasure of the community,” he said. Dolores Canizales, president of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, spoke in support of both Pike and the mural. Mayor Steve Vaus said he liked the mural, but wondered what the council would do if other businesses along the road want to follow the trend. What if a massage parlor or “head

shop” put up murals containing questionable content? “The possibility of unintended consequences scares me,” the mayor said. Councilman Jim Cunningham took a similar view, saying doing so “pains me significantly because I really like the mural.” City Attorney Morgan Foley said it would be hard to deny future applicants if the WOW mural was approved. It was Councilman John Mullin who suggested that no decision be taken, but that the matter be referred to the Poway Road Corridor Study Committee. The citizen panel is in the process of evaluating possible options regarding the future of the roadway. Somewhere along the line the committee will discuss signage rules, he said. All five council members agreed that referring the mural question to the committee was the best route to take. Councilman Dave Grosch acknowledged they were “kicking the can down the road.”

HELPING THE HUNGRY

The Poway dental office of Dr. David Rauterkus on Saturday hosted a food-packing event that drew over 100 volunteers who prepared 20,000 bagged meals that will be sent to feed the malnourished in Haiti. Helping with the effort was the local Friends & Family Community Connection. The dental office raised $9,000 in contributions and Rauterkus contributed another $5,000 to purchase rice and beans from Haitian farmers and employ Haitian women to supply an additional 20,000 meals for two elementary schools. Rauterkus and his wife, Lori, have made multiple trips to Haiti to provide dental care with FFCC’s medical teams. He is shown with members of his office staff.

BY LYNDSEY WINKLEY A pedestrian who was hit and killed by a train in Del Mar Friday night was a teen from Poway, the Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday. The 19-year-old was using a cellphone application to stargaze with two friends when they heard the northbound train approach near 13th Street about 9:15 p.m. The teens were sitting on a bluff west of the tracks and two of them decided to get closer to the tracks to take take video of the passing locomotive, sheriff’s Sgt. Richard George said.

The engineer of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe train saw them approach, and activated the train’s horn and switched on bright lights as a warning, but the teens didn’t move. The Poway man was hit and died before he could be taken to a hospital. The two friends, a man and woman, both 18 or 19 years old, told officers the victim had been standing on the edge of one the railroad ties, and didn’t realize the train could hit him from that spot. His name has not been released. Winkley writes for The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Three nabbed in Poway warrant sweep POWAY (CNS) - Three Poway residents were arrested for outstanding drunk driving arrest warrants Saturday and 20 other warrants were cleared and taken off the books, according to sheriff's deputies.

A sweep was conducted in the city of Poway in an effort to crack down on motorists with outstanding warrants for drunk driving, according to Sgt. David Cheever. “The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is well aware of the communities'

concerns for persons driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs,” Cheever said. “The focus of the operation was the apprehension of suspects who have active DUI warrants in the city of Poway.''

Dear San Diego Homeowner, Hi, I’m Kent Harle, CEO of Stellar Solar and I am so excited to be extending our offer for solar priced at a level that is within reach of most homeowners! We are now cutting the standard cost of solar by more than 30%. We’ve priced solar so low in fact, that if you talk to our competition, they are going to say there is a catch or that it is subpar product. There is NO catch and the product is LG Panels paired with SolarEdge inverters and it includes monitoring. There are a few restrictions, but I believe that most of you that call will be able to take full advantage of this offer and that is what I want. I have already received calls asking why we dropped the price so much. We didn’t have to, we wanted to. It is our commitment to continue to improve processes and drive down costs for our customers so that solar is a viable option for decades to come. Call us today for a quick, easy, no-hassle quote.

OUR READERS WRITE Answers, please I've read the Poway City Council candidate challenger statements and they all say this: "I love Poway. I've lived in Poway for years. Here's what my job is. I do these things outside of work, my volunteer things are this." OK, that's great. Since the challengers are trying to replace two incumbents, what I'd like to ask them is: Why shouldn't I just vote to re-elect the incumbents? Why do you think you'd be better than the incumbents? What have the incumbents done that you can do better? What decisions have they made that you disagree with? Then there's another important one: Why are you better qualified than your fellow candidates? To get votes you should distinguish yourself from your fellow challengers and from the incumbents. Let's see what happens at the debates. Joe St. Lucas Poway

A No-Brainer

‘Phony’ legislation In response to the Sept. 22 column article Thomas Elias "The Self-Serving Plastic Bag Props,” I am frustrated by such "do-good" legislation. Do our legislators have nothing better to do that regulate our use of plastic bags, or dictating what bathrooms people should use? This sort of phony legislation is thrust upon us with the rationalization that "we" are taking action to do something for our environment. The truth is that this is Band-Aid legislation. While I agree that we need less plastic throwaways in our ecosystem, this sort of law doesn't do much. I personally want plastic bags at the store when I need one … and I decline when I don’t need one. If you are going to legislate our usage of plastic bags, why not also include the ones that come with this newspaper, or the ones that come on the Union-Tribune advertising that is thrown on my driveway every week, neither of which I ask for. Maderas hotel makes sense

R

ecently my oldest son, who is in law school in Washington D.C., got married and a number of his friends traveled to Poway for the wedding. He reserved 25 rooms at the Rancho Bernardo Inn to ensure his friends and relatives had a place to stay near the wedding and a golf course. My wife lamented to me that it would have been perfect if we had a nice hotel at Maderas Golf Club so we could have kept all those folks in Poway. My response was simple: based on its location, not only would Maderas had been a great venue for our guests, but in addition, Poway (not San Diego) would have been the recipient of all that Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) one pays when staying at a hotel. It now appears that a nice hotel at Maderas could feasibly come to fruition. On Nov. 8, Poway residents will be able to vote for or against Measure W, a first step toward a potential hotel. I mention first step because even if a majority of Poway voters approve Measure W, the City Council would also need to hold public hearings prior to the city approving any project. This is the straight-forward process established in 1988 when Poway voters approved Proposition FF. This process provides the ability for each Poway resident to have a say in the potential of certain parcels of land modifying its intensification. Pursuant to Proposition FF residents of Poway voted “no” in 2004 to a proposal for a “yes” to the potential development of what is now Fire Station No. 3 near Abraxas High School. When voting for a candidate for an office like the school board or City Council it helps to learn all you can about that individual including their thoughts and opinions on local issues and projects along with their experience and demeanor. However, when it comes to a decision on a matter like Measure

W, it really becomes a simpler exercise for the voter. The City Council did its job by placing this on the upcoming ballot, as necessitated by FF. The question to the voter - Does the proposed project have a negative or positive impact on the majority of Poway residents? To test the difficulty of degree of this question I asked a manager at my place of employment (who has been a Poway resident for the past 10 years) what she thought of a mid-size hotel at the Maderas Golf Club. Her query back to me was, “Where is Maderas?” I realized her response should not be a surprise to me as there are a large number of Poway residents (many who do not play golf or enjoy Wednesday night Burgers with Chef Earl) that do not know where Maderas is, and/or have never visited. The fact Maderas is about as far north as you can go in a 45-square-mile city like Poway, the question on potential negative impact to a majority of Poway residents including traffic, noise or safety seems to answer itself. A classic ‘no brainer’. Of course, if Measure W passes and a proposal is later brought forward, the city would mitigate any impacts in the immediate area, if any. So this begs the question, is there a positive impact for the majority of Poway residents? It appears that a mid-size hotel being built in the middle of an already developed golf course would produce substantial revenue for the city from the TOT paid by hotel guests. And, the city would have the discretion to spend this money on matters that affect all Poway residents. And better yet, when planning his wedding my youngest son will have a beautiful place for his guests to stay in Poway, and it gets even better, the money would stay in Poway. Higginson served on the Poway City Council for over 20 years.

Get Real BY DICK LYLES

They are refugees, not immigrants

M

any of the complex problems America faces today are denied solutions because of the way politicians and the media tend to over-simplify them through two-valued thinking. They’ve conditioned themselves and us to think every issue has an answer that is either right or wrong, good or bad, or these days, just or unjust. This dumbing-down of every issue to two-valued judgments is so pervasive, most Americans don’t even realize it is happening. It would be convenient if today’s complicated problems could be reduced to two-valued judgments. Unfortunately, most cannot. Today’s major problems are complicated by many

intricate and often times unrelated factors. A good example is the complex problem of Middle East refugees. Because the problem has been improperly framed by politicians and the media, the world has been steered away from viable solutions. The Middle Eastern refugee problem is incorrectly framed the public dialog on several levels. The first mischaracterization is that all the people who have left countries such as Syria and Iraq are immigrants. However, most of them left their homelands to avoid genocide, rape and wide spread persecution and carnage. Therefore, they are refugees – not immigrants. Immigrants are people

who freely choose to live in another country – not people who are forced out of their own country against their will to avoid being slaughtered. People who flee their country under adverse circumstances are refugees. Unfortunately, the media and politicians have framed much of the public debate around the question, “how many immigrants should each country take?” This not only confuses the real issue, but virtually guarantees the most important problem won’t be addressed, let alone solved. The proper way to frame the problem is to ask, “How do we solve the Middle East refugee problem?” The core problem is the persecution and genocide that is creating so many

refugees in the first place. If not for these there would be no problem. Middle Eastern refugees, almost unanimously, would not choose to leave their homes or their countries if not forced out. The majority of them wear house keys on wristlets as a reminder of their goal to return to both their homes and their homelands. Thought leaders avoid debate about the real problem because if they acknowledge the real problem, they must also acknowledge that the real problem needs a real solution. They choose to obfuscate the issue by saying it is an immigration concern rather than confront the thornier issue of genocide abroad. The result is largely emotional debate over whether to take in 50,000 or 150,000 “immigrants” while the core problem continues to create more refugees. The debaters could care less whether the debate is about zero or a million immigrants, as long as it steers people away from the real problem, which is widespread genocide and persecution.

The fact that our leaders and the media don’t care about solving the genocide and persecution problem should concern us all. They don’t care because America has no direct economic interest in the situation. It’s the same reason we didn’t stop Idi Amin from torturing and killing hundreds of thousands in Uganda when I was in my youth, the reason we didn’t help rescue 300 Christian school girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria, and the same reason we don’t care about the hundreds of millions of Chinese women who have undergone forced abortion and forced sterilization. Americans should be ashamed that economic interests take precedence over humanitarian interests in shaping global strategy. We must demand that humanitarian concerns be on par with economic concerns and that we help solve the world’s real problems. Eagles to open league play; Del Norte, Poway, RB High all have byes BY MICHAEL BOWER One glance at the Army-Navy High football team’s 0-5 record and it would be easy for Maranatha Christian to figure a win in its Pacific League opener on Friday night is in the bag. But the sting of last year’s 15-14 loss to the Warriors reminds the Eagles there is a reason the game is played on the field and not on paper. “We lost to Army-Navy in our final league game and it cost us a league title,” Eagles first-year coach Kyle Duggin said. “We never take an opponent lightly. The boys will be prepared.” Maranatha enters its 7 p.m. contest at Army-Navy with a 3-1 record and a whole lot of confidence after edging Horizon Christian Academy 14-13 last week. Trevor Sheng blocked a PAT early in the fourth quarter and then scored on a 4-yard run to give the Eagles the one-point lead. Zac Bridger sealed the victory, picking off a pass in Horizon’s final

possession. “A close win like that shows the character of the boys,” Duggin said. “They show up and make the plays that need to be made.” Sheng, a 5-foot, 10-inch middle linebacker and running back, finished with 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 34 carries. It was the second time he has reached the 30-carry plateau and it was his fourth straight 100-yard game. “He is a natural football player,” Duggin said of his star on both sides of the ball. “He wants to be the guy to have the ball in the last second and he wants to make plays for his teammates. He is the most fierce competitor we have.” The Eagles will look to come out fierce against a Warriors team which was blanked 61-0 by La Jolla Country Day last week. Army-Navy has been shutout three times and its closest contest was an 11-8 loss to Montgomery. SEE FOOTBALL, B4

Nighthawks to host Titans for first time BY TERRY MONAHAN Del Norte High came into its initial season in the Palomar League with four consecutive league championships on its girls volleyball resume. But winning the Valley League (2012-13) and the Avocado East League (2014-15) is a distant memory now as the Nighthawks continue in a league in which five of the other six teams have claimed San Diego Section championships. On Tuesday, Del Norte welcomes Poway to its gym for its third league match. “None of my girls have ever been in the Del Norte gym,’’ Poway coach Breezy Ambort said. Poway has beaten Del Norte in both of the previous meetings. Both wins came in the annual Fall Classic. “They’re good,’’ Ambort said. “They’re as solid as the rest of the league. And I know they’re coming in with high expectations.’’ Unlike the first two meetings, this match counts in the new Palomar League that includes Mt. Carmel, Rancho Bernardo, Westview and Mission Vista as well as Poway and Del Norte. “I played at Mt. Carmel and I loved beating Poway,’’ Del Norte coach Ashton O’Halloran said. “Before Westview, Del Norte and Rancho Bernardo opened, Poway-Mt. Carmel was the biggest rivalry. “My mom went to Mt. Carmel, so we all want to beat Poway.’’ Del Norte started the season by winning six of its first 10 matches, losing only to Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon, Cathedral Catholic and Huntington Beach, which won last weekend’s Coast Classic at La Jolla. Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon and Cathedral Catholic are multiple CIF championship winners in their history. “So far, the teams we’ve lost to are not being beaten by anyone else,’’ O’Halloran said. “We’re the only team to take Torrey to four games. “If we had won one of those four losses, it would have been great victories. We’re getting better each week.’’ Poway, whose last CIF title came in 2009, came out of the Fall Classic with a 5-1 record, but has lost four of the last five matches. A win over El Camino is the lone highlight. SEE VOLLEYBALL, B4

Higbee picks up his offense, defense for Nighthawks BY TERRY MONAHAN Although he had a fine offensive water polo season in 2015, Kevyn Higbee wanted to make a change for senior year. The 22 goals and 28 assists from his junior year at Del Norte would be fine for most players. Not Higbee. The 5-foot-11, 146-pounder went to work in the offseason on revamping his game. Higbee wanted to score more. If the early returns are to be believed, it worked. Through the first 14 games of the season, Higbee leads the team with 25 goals and seven assists. “It feels nice to be a bigger help offensively on the team,’’ Higbee said. “I feel way more confident with what I can do on offense. “It wasn’t that hard. I’ve paid attention in practice so I kind of knew what it would take to score more.’’ More than just maturing physically, the biggest change, according to Higbee, is better communication and having better pool awareness. “You have to know where your teammates are in the pool,’’ Higbee said. “You can do so much more as a team. “When the defense comes out on you, there is about one second to decide where to throw the ball. “In the past I’d concentrated on defense, but now I’m getting the ball more and I’m driving

Del Norte High’s Kevyn Higbeen looks to take a shot during a match earlier this season. to the goal more.’’ If it was not for Higbee’s mom, he probably would not be a water polo player. Brother Ryan was the first one into the pool. A year later, Kevyn, who did a little swimming and one season of soccer, was forced by mom Jane to pick a sport. The choice was water polo. “I liked it right away,’’ Higbee said. “I liked

the mental part of it and working as a team. “It is dead serious when you’re in the pool. The physical side of the game is fun except when players are just out to try to hurt you. “Elbowing and punching in the pool I don’t like.’’ Higbee was a starter for Del Norte the first half of last season before heading to the bench. The reason was defense.

“Last year he had some bad habits,’’ Del Norte coach Cameron Lindroth said. “He’s really improved his defense as well as his team defense. “I tell guys all the time I can throw you in there if you play defense because I can throw you in there on offense and you can figure it out. “Seeing Kevyn during the offseason I knew his overall game would be so much better this season.’’ It turns out, Lindroth was right. For next year, Higbee is unsure if he will be back in the pool for another water polo season. He will major in computer science, but the demands may preclude him from playing. “I’d like to develop computer games,’’ he said. “I find it really fun. “Water polo has taught me that when problems come up you have to figure out how to work around them in computers. “I’ve always been pretty good putting things together.’’ Higbee has yet to pick a college to continue his studies, although he’s pretty sure he wants to stay in California. “If a college has a water polo team, maybe I’d play just to meet new people,’’ Higbee said. “I know a few people who sit in front of the computer all day long. “It’s important to have people skills and you can’t do that in front of a computer.’’ Monahan is a freelance writer.

PREP GIRLS GOLF

Memory of brother becomes a companion on course BY GLAE THIEN Even when Grace Fitzgerald is by herself on the golf course, the Poway High senior isn’t really alone. It’s there that she conjures thoughts of her late brother, Joe, a golf enthusiast three years her senior who died from leukemia a decade ago at age 11. “I think of him all the time on the golf course — just like what would he think of me now,” Grace said. “I wasn’t super into golf back when I played with him, but now I’ve taken it so far.” No question, Joe would be proud of his little sister, who qualified for the Southern California Regional high school girls championship and subsequently committed to Santa Clara for college golf. He would appreciate how she played in the U.S. Girls Junior Open this summer. Now, too, each time Grace makes a birdie through the prep season this fall, she does so in his memory through the Leadership Links charity program coordinated by the American Junior Golf Association. Grace has sought pledges and other donations through the Birdies for Charity format to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the ACE Grant program that aids deserving juniors with golf expenses. Into the season, Grace had raised $3,900 since last spring toward her goal of $5,000. All the while, the memories are priceless of times

But he just loved it. He always wanted to go out and play with my dad.” Joe endured a multi-year battle with leukemia. As his sister recalls, one of the toughest parts was a 100-day isolation period at home. Under the circumstances, perhaps the best therapy was playing golf video games. Grace became more committed to golf at age 11 herself, beginning competitive play in earnest, leading to a spot in the Titans lineup as a freshman. For two seasons, Grace followed the lead of a group of upperclassmen, but with their

Poway senior Grace Fitzgerald, who has committed to Santa Clara, qualified last season for the Southern California Regional tourney. graduation, she became the most experienced player on the squad and thus a big sister of sorts. “Her junior year, it kind of became her team,” Poway coach Jim Bennet said. “Grace stepped up as a captain and did a great job with the younger kids. Also, she worked really hard in the offseason with the goal to get to the regionals.” Grace placed 10th in the San Diego Section with a 154 for two rounds at Admiral Baker. She followed with an 81 in the regionals at Goose Creek near Riverside. “I love the feeling when I have a great round going, and everything just feels so easy and natural. That keeps me coming back,” Grace said. “But it’s definitely hard, and there

are some days when it’s just frustrating. I just try to push through that and not let it affect how I handle it in the future.” Grace enjoyed a summer highlight when she shot a 76 at Merced Country Club in the U.S. Girls Junior Open qualifying for one of six berths for the next step. She competed in stroke play at the main event but missed the cut for match play. It also became a valuable experience toward her goal of reaching the prep state tournament while also spearheading the Titans this season. “I want to set an example off the golf course,” Grace said. “Also, just have fun.” With her brother close in spirit. Ambort singled out outside hitter Sarah Williams, an all-tournament pick in the Fall Classic, and defensive specialist-outside hitter Ashley Kyle for their play. “I thought we lost some matches we should have won,’’ Ambort said. “I want to see some more consistency. We’ve only shown that in a loss to Bishop’s.’’ Consistency is a requirement for the Palomar League, not a luxury only the best teams possess. Without it, league play will be long and painful. “Every win in this league will be a big reward toward postseason play,’’ O’Halloran said. “The players on Poway and Del Norte all know each other and the coaches on both teams all know each other. “I wasn’t here last year, but the girls had blowout wins the last four years. We don’t expect to see any of that in this league. “We started this Aug. 1 with one desire - to win the Palomar League.’’ O’Halloran said her team has been led by senior middle blocker Kija Rivers, junior outside hitter Hailey Henderson and sophomore libero Lauren Yee. **** Rancho Bernardo The Broncos opened the season with a 7-2 record. Its best win was over Scripps Ranch in the Fall Classic. Its losses were to Santa Fe Christian and West Hills, also during the Classic. This is the best start to a season at Rancho Bernardo in more than a decade. **** Maranatha Christian The Eagles opened the season with 11 wins, the first time in school history they have opened with an 11-0 record. Maranatha lost its final two matches in the Buccaneer Bash to San Diego and host Mission Bay.

One thing the Eagles cannot do is get caught looking ahead to an October 7, Division V showdown against 4-1 La Jolla Country. “We are not looking past anyone,” Duggin said. “Every week we just want to get better. The boys want to get better and clean up their mistakes. That is what we try to do every week.” Prediction: Maranatha 21, Army-Navy 13 ****

Byes Del Norte (3-2, 1-1) Last week: Del Norte lost to Poway 51-6 Notes: The Nighthawks have to be pleased with a 3-2 record at the bye week, especially since it has not scored over 20 points in any of their first five contests. There have been three blowout losses, but the 28-0 defeat to Carlsbad in Week 1 was turned into a forfeit victory since the Lancers used an ineligible player. Del Norte will gladly take it, as it looks to snatch a better seed in the Division III playoffs than last year’s No. 12 designation. The offense will need to get better if the Nighthawks want to compete deep into the postseason. Del Norte is averaging just 10 points per game, but some of that is due to playing tough Division I opponents such as Carlsbad and San Marcos. Poway is in Division II, but is ranked No. 8 in the county. The play of middle linebacker and fullback Scott McKirdy has been a huge bright spot for Del Norte. The 240-pound senior is averaging over 6 yards per carry and he has picked off two passes. Robby Hauck also has two INTs, as Del Norte has six picks in all. Ty Anderson leads all receivers with 11

catches for 261 yards. The Nighthawks will continue league play at Vista after the bye week. **** No. 8 Poway (5-0, 1-0) Last week: Poway beat Del Norte 51-6 Notes: The Titans have the town buzzing after their first 5-0 start since 2007, when they finished 12-0 and claimed the Division I championship. Poway has its eye on a Division II crown and whispers of a contending for a state title have begun to circulate. Mater Dei Catholic (4-1) and Olympian (3-2), who Poway already beat, could be the only teams standing in the way of the Titans. But there is plenty to do before that potential showdown takes place. Poway is hoping to make a run at the Palomar League title, which would mean dethroning back-to-back champion Rancho Bernardo (5-0). The two squads seem to be on a collision course for the crown, as both are 5-0 at the same time for the first time in history. The Titans have been winning in typical fashion, pounding the ball and playing solid defense. Offensively, Poway has gotten outstanding play from its offensive line and Jared Adelman. Nobody has been able to slow down the combination, as the Titans have scored at least 33 points in every game but one. The defense gave up its lowest point total of the year against the Nighthawks last week. It has been strong all season, giving up just 15 points per game. Poway could be in for its toughest game of the year against Mt. Carmel after the bye week. The Sundevils are 4-1 and had over 400 yards of offense against a strong Rancho Bernardo defense last week. If the Titans can clear the

hurdle, the road seems to be clear until an Oct. 11 showdown with rival Rancho Bernardo. **** No. 3 Rancho Bernardo (5-0, 2-0) Last week: Rancho Bernardo beat Mt. Carmel 43-20 Notes: The Broncos played without star running back Milan Grice for the first two games of the year and went 2-0. Now it looks like they will have to try to keep winning without quarterback Mark Salazar. The Fresno State-bound senior going down with a left shoulder injury against Mt. Carmel last week is about the only thing that went wrong for Rancho Bernardo before the bye week. Salazar said he will be back, but there has been no timetable set on his return and no specifics about the injury have been released. Quarterback Christian Lewis took his place against Mt. Carmel and there is certainly enough talent on offense for the Broncos to keep winning. Grice showed he can carry the load, as he rushed for 234 yards and three TDs on 21 carries last week. He also tossed a 49-yard touchdown to Christian Baker. Baker is part of a deep wide receiver corps that knows how to get open. Malcolm Ross-Turner has proven he can win any battle in the air and Leo Wagner has shown time and again he is a dangerous option. The trio has combined for 46 catches for 669 yards and seven TDs. The Broncos will have their toughest game of the season after the bye week when it travels to No. 4 Mission Hills on Oct. 7. The Grizzlies are coming off an impressive win over Oceanside and are 5-0 against Rancho Bernardo since 2010. The last win for the Broncos over Mission Hills was on Sept. 23 in 2004, 43-14.

ENTERTAINMENT

PowPAC play gets interesting in its second act “Dangerous Obsession” can be seen through Oct. 16

REVIEW BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK PowPAC’s latest play, billed as a psycho-thriller, unfortunately lacks any thrill until after intermission. As Act 2 of “Dangerous Obsession” progresses, the secrets and hidden motivations of its three main characters are revealed, which leads to some pretty surprising twists. Unfortunately, the audience has to sit through a rather boring Act 1 first. April McBride and William Parker Shore portray Sally and Mark Driscoll, an English couple whose marriage appears to be OK, despite a few not-too-annoying personality flaws in each spouse. Joshua Meihaus is their mysterious visitor, John Barrett, and Sheila Mura makes a cameo appearance as one of the Driscolls’ friends. The play takes place on a Friday afternoon on a hot, late summer day at the Driscolls’ luxurious home in England. Late in the afternoon, before Mark returns home from work, Sally is surprised by John, a

somewhat odd stranger who insists she let him into her home because he wants to speak with her husband about a business matter. Sally resists until John reminds her that they met months earlier, though she has vague — if any — recollection of the encounter due to being quite tipsy during their first meeting. More out of politeness than anything else she finally agrees John can wait until Mark’s return. Big mistake. As proven later in the show, Sally should have followed her intuition and not let John stay, though seeing how bent he was on completing his plan he might have forced his way in. But Sally’s permissiveness makes John’s plan unfold much easier and the audience is forced to listen to their small talk while waiting for Mark to come home. This is where the play gets very boring. Not only did the script by N.J. Crisp force the scene to drag on much longer than necessary, but Meihaus’ use of an accent just sounded like monotone droning. It is not clear dialogue-wise if he was also supposed to be socially awkward — an unmemorable person seems more apt — but the character’s mannerisms did not help

Sally Driscoll (April McBride) is horrified when an acquaintance, John Barrett (Joshua Meihaus), threatens to shoot her husband, Mark (William Parker Shore), after taking the couple hostage in their home during PowPAC’s production of “Dangerous Obsession.” Meihaus’ performance become more interesting. After Mark returns the small talk continues between the three characters much longer than necessary. Shore does well in his portrayal of an arrogant

individual and McBride is suitable in her characterization of Sally, a housewife who uses alcohol to cope with her marriage. The audience is clued-in early on that John has ill-intent toward the couple as he subtilely seals off any means for the Driscolls to escape. How far he plans to go with destroying the couple — be it physically or emotionally — is the climatic twist. The cast, under the direction of Jay Mower, does well in utilizing the intimate stage and as usual the volunteer set design and building team excels in its efforts. A very detailed, realistic-looking room was created with all the extra touches that makes one believe it is a real house and outdoors, not a stage. Lighting is also effectively used to create ambiance and passage of time. “Dangerous Obsession” can be seen at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays through Oct. 16 at PowPAC, Poway’s Community Theatre, 13250 Poway Road. Tickets are $22 for general admission and $20 for students, seniors and active duty military. Purchase at powpac.org or call 858-679-8085. Parking is free. RANDALL HICKMAN

"Nana's Naughty Knickers" stars Kimberly Wooldridge as Nana, Katie Heniser as Bridget and Marilyn Woolfe as Vera.

‘Nana’s Naughty Knickers’ opens tonight BY EMILY SORENSEN Vista’s Broadway Theater is going a little wild with “Nana’s Naughty Knickers,” opening tonight (Thursday). This comedy, which runs through Oct. 16, opens the 13th season for the theater. Randall Hickman, the show’s director, called it hysterical. “We are very excited about are season this year,” said Hickman. “We are opening our season with a show I have been wanting to do for a couple of years now. ‘Nana’s Naughty Knickers’ is a fast paced comedy with fantastic characters – and the plot line is like nothing you have ever seen on stage – senior citizens making and selling lingerie, illegally.” “Nana’s Naughty Knickers” was written by Katherine DiSavino, who is also the playwright for “Things My Mother taught Me,” a show Broadway Theater did two years ago that was a big hit, Hickman said. “(DiSavino) sent me a private message thanking me for doing the show,” he said. “The audience loved it. So I looked to see what else she had done and found ‘Nana’s Naughty Knickers.’” Bridget, played by Katie Heniser, has just moved to New York to attend law school and moves in with her Nana, played by Kimberly Wooldridge, in her apartment. This turns into more of an ordeal than Bridget expects after she discovers her Nana is running an illegal boutique out of her apartment, selling handmade naughty lingerie to every senior citizen in the five boroughs and not charging sales tax. Bridget has to try and hide the illegal underwear from her cop boyfriend and from the landlord, who is desperately trying to come up with a reason to evict Nana and raise the rent on her apartment, as well as deal with a rival lingerie peddler. “It’s bad everywhere you go, which makes for great comedy,” said Hickman. Rounding out the cast is Marilyn Woolfe as Nana’s best friend and partner in crime, Vera; Jacob Hatch as Tom; Lou Slocum as Schmidt; Larissa Benfer as Helen, the rival; Wendy Romero as Clare; and Douglas Davis as the UPS man. Hickman said this cast is extra special because it features two of his former students. Heniser and Benfer both attended Hickman’s theater camps as children, and now as adults have come back to perform in their former mentor’s show. “I haven’t seen them in years,” said Hickman. “It’s so rewarding to know they’ve come full circle with the program.” It took set designer Douglas Davis a month to design and build the set, including the hidden caches that pop out of walls, fireplaces and more, said Hickman. “It’s going to elicit gasps from the audiences, it’s very cool.” Show times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at Vista’s Broadway Theater, 340 East Broadway. Tickets are $23.50 and are available by calling 760-806-7905, online at broadwayvista.com or at the box office from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Speak up!

S

peak up! The other morning I got my dog’s hair cut. From across the parking lot a friend saw my hat and shouted “It’s impossible to miss you!” It’s the power of marketing … finding ways to stand out of the crowd. Regular readers know that the average American adult is bombarded with 5,000 marketing messages every 24 hours. As consumers we erect virtual walls around ourselves to block out the onslaught. Marketers are tasked with finding ways to break through those walls. Simple equation, right? Still, what do you do with someone who doesn’t want to talk about themselves? Consider my client Suzy. She’s brilliant, talented, and extremely photogenic. She knows her business inside and out, and has contributed hugely to her employer and

her industry. So I naturally nominated her for the Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” award, and she protested. “I haven’t done enough,” she cried. Now I protested. Because if I waited until she felt she’s done enough to warrant an award, Suzy and I will both be very old. And on one level it’s refreshing to find people who are humble. They put their heads down and work, never seeing the promotional opportunities from their productivity, talent or physical beauty. They’re blessed with the “Aw, shucks” gene. Yet surviving New York City’s rough-and-tumble taught me that being shy doesn’t equal good marketing. You need to stand up and shout who you are and why it’s important to pay attention to you.

And if you’re not comfortable doing so, you need to find a guy with a megaphone and a big mouth. Yes, someone like me. Because failure to promote yourself in your professional community means you’ll disappear from view. You’ll find promotional opportunities all around you. They easily include speaking at conferences, posting columns to an ever-expanding LinkedIn universe, and schmoozing at Chamber of Commerce events. Then relax. Even if you don’t win any awards, merely staying visible will introduce you to new friends and sales prospects. And since so much success is based on whom you know… With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Find other intelligent ways to market yourself at www.askmrmarketing.com.
