Church burglars face sentencing Dec. 11 burglary charge was dismissed against Tye. Since Tye has committed fewer burglaries and doesn’t have a criminal record, he faces a lesser sentence of one year in jail and may be placed on probation, said the prosecutor. Szumski’s case is aggravated because he has two prior convictions for burglary, and this is his third strike. El Cajon Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein could sentence Szumski 25 years to life for each of the six burglaries consecutively. Aguilar added that it was theoretically possible for Goldstein to place Szumski on probation, but

veryone is in a holiday mood — the "giving mood" — and that's just what the scam artists are waiting for. They call your home or your cell phone when you are busy and hope that you'll just say, "Yes, I'll donate to your cause" — and it may be a cause you really didn't plan to give your hard-earned money. Take a few moments to think about the issues that you really care about and want to invest in. Does the largest percentage of your donation help those in need — or does most of it go to pay employee salaries and expensive advertising to obtain more donations? Make a stand and only give your money to causes you know and believe in. Is there a need in your community that you can personally address? Giving to a charity or a cause should be based both on what your heart and your head tell you. Devise a Giving Plan. Where will you make the most impact with what you share — and will it make your heart full of joy as well? Stick with that plan and, if you are asked to donate to something you aren't familiar or comfortable with, you can simply say you have already given all you can give. You don't have to donate a lot of money or time to experience the satisfaction of helping others. Do it wisely, and both you and the recipient will reap benLÄ[Z MHY Z\YWHZZPUN [OL TVUL[HY` ]HS\L VM `V\Y NPM[ Be careful and safe this holiday season and don't give your credit card or checking account number to anyone or any company unless you are certain that they are "for real." One easy rule to remember is, "if you called them, you are in control of the phone call." Only pay for something over the computer or phone if you think that you would do business with the entity in person. If someone calls you, you can ask for his or her phone number and call back — at your convenience. It's your money — you can decide where and when you donate it. If you have any questions, contact Sheriff's Crime Prevention Specialist Barbara Wallace at the Ramona Sheriff's Station at 760-738-2425.

Station seeks applicants for Senior Volunteer Patrol Persons interested in joining the Ramona Sheriff's Senior Volunteer Patrol are invited to call 760-738-2481 for an information meeting. The volunteer patrol performs home vacation checks, HZZPZ[Z ^P[O [YHMĂ„J JVU[YVS enforces disabled parking regulations, patrols neighborhoods, schools, parks and shopping areas and visits homebound seniors who

live alone in Ramona and surrounding areas. Volunteers must be age 50 or older, in good health, pass a background check, and have automobile insurance and a valid California driver's license. Training includes a two-week academy and training patrols. The minimum commitment is 24 hours a month and attendance at a monthly meeting.

Two men charged with burglarizing St. Mary’s in-the-Valley Episcopal Church in Ramona and committing other break-ins will be sentenced Dec. 11. Christopher Richard Szumski, 33, who pleaded guilty Nov. 12 to two burglary charges involving the Ramona church and four other break-ins, could face 150 years in prison, said Deputy District Attorney Andrew Aguilar. Brandon James Tye, 20, pleaded guilty Nov. 12 to two residential burglaries in Lakeside and San Marcos. Aguilar said the Ramona

The suspects took a safe, sacramental wine, checks, communion silver, and V[OLY P[LTZ VMÄJPHSZ YLWVY[LK ;OL Z\ZWLJ[Z \ZLK HU VMÄJL JOHPY to wheel the safe into their getaway vehicle, a white SUV. The chair was noticed in the parking lot. Sheriff’s deputies arrested them April 22 and found stolen property in a vehicle they were using. The family-oriented celebration included dinner, recognition of charter members, sacred music, and appreciation to Pastor Dan and Karyn Erlenbusch for their leadership and ministry to all of the families of Spirit of Joy and beyond. The evening also included drawings for several opportunity baskets hosted by the Spirits of Grace women's fellowship to help raise money to furnish the kitchen planned for the congregation's new building. This was followed by an auction of student artwork to raise money for youth activities at Spirit of Joy.

Spotlight on Local | Businesses Design board approves couple's plans for Marmalade on Main By KAREN BRAINARD A couple who just moved to Ramona plans to open a small farm-to-table restaurant in Old Town. Ramona Design Review Board approved Travis and Jessica Tan's request for a site plan waiver to change the use of the building at 865 Main St. from retail to restaurant. Jessica Tan told the board on Nov. 20 that she plans to serve modern American cuisine and use local produce, wines and beers. The 1,600-square-foot building stands between the Pott Belly Shop and the Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery. Tan said the building will

Thinking beyond Thanksgiving Arch Health receives Excellence in Healthcare Happy Thanksgiving. Our society’s become so fragmented by media, political division and an attitude of “How DARE you be different?â€? that it sometimes seems the only thing holding us together are national holidays. some “specialâ€? item they could easily buy the next day just seems to chip away at the little foundation we still have in common. This is admittedly strange talk coming from a guy who advises clients about how to maximize their marketing efforts. But being a good corporate citizen is important, too, and that means more than just writing a check or donating to a silent auction. Good corporate citizenry requires making an effort to look at the big picture, beyond your own bottom line. That’s why local businesses join the Ramona Rotary Club and encourage community participation for many of their employees. Talent show to help 10-year-old achieve Christmas gift-giving goals J`^e$lgj n\cZfd\ ]fi Xcc kpg\j f] kXc\ek Who's got talent, Ramona? Alexavia Zetterberg, 10-year-old founder of Believe in Miracles charity, is looking for talent for her talent show. Can you sing, dance, play an instrument, or do you have a special talent you want to share? If so, email alexavia@believeinmiracles.org or call 619-887-HOPE (4673). The talent show will be held in Ramona Town Hall on Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. The show is Alexavia's way of giving back to the community and saying thank you for all who have contributed the past three years to her efforts to help families in Ramona who can't afford a good Christmas. "The people of Ramo-

na help me out so much every year, I just want to give back to them," the Barnett Elementary School student said. Talent show admission is free. She asks that those who attend donate a new toy or item for a child or adult, or give a small donation toward Christmas presents for families in need, but she stresses that a donation is not required. A silent auction with baskets from local businesses will be held, and there will be food and entertainment provided by Ramona residents. Each year since she was in the second grade Alexavia has received gifts and donations at Christmastime to help Ramona families.

reation with plans to expand that use. Currently, a 480-acre western portion has a four-mile loop trail that allows public access. Mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders are welcome. The rest of the preserve is not yet open to the public, but additional trails and tagging areas are planned. Recently you may have noticed hundreds of metal boxes by the entrance to the preserve. phens' kangaroo rat by trap and release. The San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation is working on a section of the grasslands staging area project by the old rodeo arena near Ramona Airport. According to the most recent update I’m happy to report: The Grassland Phase 1 project PZ [OL ÄYZ[ VM [OYLL WOHZLZ of trails and improvements to the preserve. This phase has four components: establishing an additional 2.8 miles of trail, development of a staging area, construction of a viewing area, and improvements to the volunteers pad. The project is in the concept and planning stage. The Stephens' kangaroo rat is listed as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, so a study needs to be conducted before disturbing the area. Hopefully they can start constructing the staging area and trails in 2014.

The Ramona Grasslands 7YLZLY]L PUJS\KLZ H ZPNUPÄcant portion of the Santa Maria Creek watershed. The San Diego County website states, “The watershed supports a mosaic of habitat types, including native and non-native grasslands, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, oak woodlands, Santa Maria Creek, its adjacent riparian area, and a diversity of unique vernal pools, vernal swales, and alkali playas. Many rare animals make their homes in this area. Stephens' kangaroo rat, fairy shrimp, purple stipa, blue-eyed grass, and wooley blue curls are among the rare inhabitants. Bird watchers are drawn to the grasslands for the spectacular number of hawks that spend the winter here. Santa Maria Creek, which runs through the grasslands, adds to the bio-diversity.” The county and The Nature Conservancy, a major partner in establishing the preserve, have developed

a Resource Management Plan (RMP) including (YLH :WLJPÄJ 4HUHNLment Directives for the preserve. The county Department of Parks and Recreation manages the preserve in accordance with the RMP, which provides guidance to maintain, enhance and monitor the conservation values of biological resources within the preserve. In addition, the parks department provides passive recreation opportunities within the preserve that furthers the development of the Coast to Crest Trail, a 55-mile trail that goes from the coast to the mountains at the Volcan Mountain Preserve. The county statement regarding “the further development of the Coast to Crest Trail” in relation to Ramona Grasslands is confusing. To my knowledge there are no connections to or from Ramona, or the grasslands, to the Coast to Crest Trail. I am not aware that the county is seeking

those connections actively. Connecting Ramona Grasslands with the Coast to Crest Trail and obtaining a more easterly connection to Ramona would be a boon to Ramona outdoor enthusiasts and possibly to the current and future tourism industry in Ramona. A large loop trail does not currently exist in our community and is a rare thing in our county. I’ll continue to work on these connections. Contact me if you are interested in assisting. Ramona Grasslands' staging area is off Highland Valley Road just east of Archie Moore Road. Open year-round seven days a week, hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the fall and winter and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. during spring and summer. Equestrians, hikers and bicyclists are welcome. The staging area accommodates cars and horse trailers, and visitors ^PSS ÄUK ZOHKLK WPJUPJ tables. More information is at 760-788-3326.

Bulldogs win CIF volleyball title, earn state playoff berth By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School's girls volleyball team won the CIF San Diego Section Division II championship Saturday, but the three-game victory over Otay Ranch at Cathedral High School won't close the Bulldogs' season. The Bulldogs also were the San Diego Section's second selection for the state Division II playoffs, sending Ramona on the road for a Nov. 25 playoff contest at Village Christian High in Sun Valley, north of Burbank in the San Fernando Valley. The match, scheduled to start at 7 p.m., was played after this issue went to press. The victory over Otay

Ramona accumulated 70 points for the championship while Cathedral Catholic was second with 79 points. "Couldn't happen to a greater group of kids. It's been really fun coaching them," said head coach Sherri Edwards. The Bulldogs will compete in the state meet Nov. 29 at Woodward Park in Fresno. "All week I've been talking to them about what we have to do to get third, but they completely blew me away by how well they ran," Edwards said. Susan Michalek knows a thing or two about Ramona, Calif. That knowledge has been a tremendous help in her real estate career, as Michalek has called the town home since 1974 and obtained her real estate license just after graduating from Ramona High School in 1979. In a unique twist, Michalek didn’t start selling homes right away or even after a few years. Try many years.

Now working for Coldwell Banker Country Realty, Michalek obtained her broker’s license in 2011 and specializes in all residential, 2-4 units, short sales, land and relocation deals. She said she’s extremely passionate about her job and has a selfless approach to doing what she loves. “I am an upbeat, positive and hard-working Realtor that believes honesty and integrity are the only way to run my business,” Michalek said. “I treat my clients like they are my family and believe the key to success is communication. I always try to answer my phone because you are important to me. “I understand buying or selling real estate can be an exciting and stressful time, and I do everything I possibly can to accommodate and resolve any issues before they arise.” Selling homes in Ramona is also selling part of the wonderful town to homeowners and future residents. “I have watched Ramona go from a no-stoplight town to what it has become today,” Michalek said. “Though some things have changed, Ramona still has the same small-town virtues -- being a fun, safe and happy place to raise your family. I love to show Ramona to clients from other places because I am so proud of our little town. I love my job, but most importantly, I love helping people. “That’s what this is all about for me -- helping others to make their dreams come true.” Susan Michalek I (760) 445-1270 I CalBRE # 00800834 sdrealtor.info@gmail.com I RamonaHomeSales.com

“In 2000, I bought my first home and decided at that time, I really wanted to help others achieve their real estate goals,” Michalek said. “In 2004, the opportunity finally came where I was able to start selling real estate, and I have not looked back.”

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware

that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if
