Two of the three phases of the proposed South Bypass remain on Ramona’s recommended road priority lists. The Dye Road Extension, also known as Phase 2 of the South Bypass, was included in a Top 14 list of capital improvement project priorities by a majority of the Ramona Community Planning Group at its April 3 meeting. Phase 1 of the South Bypass, extending Dye Street from state Route 67 and Mussey Grade Road to Dye Road, didn’t make the Top 14 but was added to a list of road projects that the planning group is recommending the coun-

ty pursue with Caltrans. Many of the residents attending the planners’ meeting in the library Community Room booed the decisions as they walked out after the vote. The planning group’s Transportation and Trails Subcommittee dropped the two projects from the RCPG’s 2009 Top 10 list when it met March 24, and presented its draft lists to the planners for consideration on Thursday. The meeting room was packed with many residents voicing opposition to the South Bypass, saying it would hurt Main Street businesses, cut into people’s properties, de-

Opinions vary on basketball coach traits By BILL TAMBURRINO Opinions varied from wanting a coach who encourages multi-sport athletes to one who encourages year-round single-sport play when Ramona High School’s principal and athletic director discussed and asked for comments about the hiring process and search for a new boys varsity basketball coach at the school. David Reichner, the school’s boys

varsity basketball coach for the past three years, resigned at the end of the 2014 season. Principal Chris King told the 21 people at the April 2 meeting that, while he prefers hiring a teachercoach, he has an open mind. “There is nothing like having a coach that is a teacher at the school,� said King. “A teachercoach can inspire the student/ athletes academically, athletically and can help build interest in the

program among the students on campus. Good teachers are good coaches and good coaches are good teachers. I am biased but I will keep an open mind.� Approximately 20 candidates from all over the United States and Costa Rica have expressed interest in the opening, said Damon Baldwin, athletic director. Community foundation schedules Grant Seeker Forum Ramona Community Foundation will share its 2014 grant guidelines when it holds its third annual grant seeker forum in the Ramona Library Community Room at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. The foundation will award $30,000 in grants to Ramona nonprofits, schools and/or government agencies. Proposals of $1,500 to $7,500 will be considered. The focus of this year’s guidelines

is “Civil Society — Civic Engagement and Leadership.� The foundation will accept proposals for programs that demonstrate the ability to build a more vibrant and civically engaged community. Proposals with an emphasis on supporting projects and programs that enhance the community will be accepted. Desirable projects will inspire community pride and revitalization, increase dialogue

and increase the broader participation of the community. Ramona Community Foundation is committed to the supporting organizations, projects and programs dedicated to improving the lives of those who live, work and play in Ramona. Sixteen girls will be competing in the annual Miss and Teen Miss Ramona Pageant that will take place at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center on April 12. Doors open at 6 p.m. The pageant begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, available at the gate. Vying for the title of Miss Ramona are four contestants: Brenna Brean, Courtney Ford, Andrea Proctor and Chersten Sandvik. For the Teen Miss Ramona title, the following girls are competing: Elizabeth Bowersox, Karissa Brown, Samanda Ceballos, Aixa Cedillo, Taylor Davis, Lucia Hernandez, Shannon Huff, Brooke Hurtado, Samantha Laws, Jordan McEntee, Megan McLellen, and Ciara Webb-Martin. Competition begins before the evening’s festivities, noted Pageant Director Jill Fleming. During the day the girls will complete the interview portion of the event and meet with judges. Each contestant also gives a speech before the Saturday evening event. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras and each girl is designing a mask to match the evening gown she will wear when escorted in for the formal portion of the evening, said Fleming. The masks will be on display so event-goers can vote on the one they like best. Also during the pageant each contestant will give a “golden nugget� — “a little piece of history about Ramona,� said Fleming. In addition, a judge will ask each girl a question. Crowning the winners will be 2013 Miss Ramona Brianna Abarca and Teen Miss Ramona Shannon Singleton, both of whom Fleming praised for their “exemplary� roles representing the community at events during the past year. This year’s winners will receive a savings bond — valued at $600 for Miss Ramona and $450 for Teen Miss Ramona.

RCPG Chair Jim Piva told the crowd that the South Bypass Phase 3, from Warnock Drive to Keyes Road to state Route 78, has not been supported by the planning group. “There is no Phase 3 even on the books at the county. So if your concern is in that Phase 3 area, come back in about 50 years ... because that’s when the county or everyone else will probably be talking about it,” he said.

Joe Minervini, who lives on Cecilia Jo Road, which would be affected by Phase 1, asked that, if Phase 3 will not be addressed until 50 years from now, why not get rid of it, because property owners have to disclose the proposed route when selling. Esline Witte said she moved from Santa Ysabel to Cecilia Jo Road to avoid the bottleneck at SR-67 and Highland Valley Road. “I bought in Ramona because of the rural community. I was not told of the South Bypass when I bought it,” she said.

John Hancock, another Cecilia Jo Road resident, said, “It seems to me Phase 1 and 2 are just shortcuts to the Estates.” Resident Joe Cahak said he was a member of the master road plan committee that recommended the South Bypass years ago for several reasons. “One was the amount of traffic headed to the Barona Reservation as well as to the Estates, about a third of the traffic through our community,” he said. “And the amount of traffic coming out of south Ramona, and certainly through our Main Street.” Cahak and planning group members noted that a proposed North Bypass had been abandoned years ago. “Throw away the South Bypass and we lock ourselves into the existing traffic problem, growing and increasing year by year for the rest of our lives,” Cahak said. Several people acknowledged that Main Street traffic will continue to increase as the residential developments of Cummings Ranch, off

Highland Valley Road, and Montecito Ranch, off Montecito Road, are built. “I think we need to look at the community as a whole,” said Carol Fowler, who serves as vice chair of the Ramona Village Design Group. Besides cutting back on traffic, Fowler said the bypass could help Ramona businesses. Fowler said it is not safe for pedestrians to cross Main Street in Old Town. “Who wants to go look at murals when you have to risk your life crossing Main Street?” she asked. She also noted that there are a lot of vacant stores. “A congested Main Street does not benefit business,” said Planner Torry Brean, who added that the bypass should be referred to as an alternate route. “In the long run it will make Ramona a more attractive destination.” Planner Jim Cooper, however, said he has seen restaurants full of visitors who are traveling through town on weekends. “We have a town that I

Safety has been cited as a reason for the Dye Road Extension, or Phase 2, which has 90-degree turns where Dye Road intersects with Ramona Street and again with Warnock Drive. Improvements would round out those turns. Resident Ken Brennecke brought traffic collision statistics that showed that in the past five years five accidents have occurred at Ramona Street and Warnock Drive with no injuries or deaths, and nine at Ramona Street and Dye Road with just one minor injury. “So I don’t really think safety is a consideration for the Dye Road Extension at all,” he said. However, even if Dye Road were dropped from the list, it is still in the county’s Mobility Element as part of the 2010 General Plan Update, according to Mike Aguilar, project manager with the county’s Department of Public Works. Aguilar said the county is just asking for a Top 10 list and would work to-

Planners Scotty Ensign and Carl Hickman supported Phase 1 of the bypass, saying it will give Mussey Grade Road drivers an option to get to Dye Road. Once the SR67 and Highland Valley/ Dye Road intersection is improved, they said, traffic will flow faster during rush hours and it will be more difficult to turn off Mussey Grade onto SR67. A few people spoke against the Ramona Street Extension, but it remains on the list. The planning group voted to submit the recommended lists (see sidebar) to the county for consideration by an 8-3 vote with Cooper, Richard Tomlinson and Kevin Wallace opposing. Donna Myers and Ensign recused themselves because they live on streets that were listed, and Matt Deskovick and Paul Stykel were absent.

Sparks pleads guilty to misdemeanor manslaughter in Ramona man’s death A Lakeside resident pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for causing a head-on crash that killed a 74-year-old man in Ramona. Garrett Michael Sparks, 20, was arrested shortly after the Aug. 29 collision, which occurred on

San Vicente Road south of Warnock Drive about 7:40 p.m. The defendant later posted $50,000 bail. Sparks told authorities he took his eyes off the road for at least 10 seconds while he was reaching for items that had fallen onto his truck’s floorboard from the pas-

senger seat, according to the California Highway Patrol. His southbound 2007 Ford Ranger drifted into oncoming traffic at about 50 mph and stuck a northbound 2000 Ford Ranger driven by Kenneth Frederick Crane of Ramona. Crane was pronounced dead at the scene from

multiple blunt force injuries. Sparks escaped injury. Investigators determined alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Sparks faces up to a year in jail when he is sentenced May 16 in El Cajon, said Deputy District Attorney Derek Grilz.

Ramona has an open gym on Wednesday nights, when teacher-coach Dan Marshall offers instruction and playing time for Ramona High athletes. When one parent asked if the parents could run the off-season program, Baldwin explained the rules and laws regarding high school coaches. “They must be first aid and CPR certified, must have passed a course on concussions, undergo a criminal background check and FBI fingerprint check, pass a coaching course, and go through the interview process,� he said Gym time was also a concern. The wrestling team will not be practicing in the gym next season, because declining enrollment is making portable classrooms available. Other traits that those present wanted were: a good communicator, experience (preferably college) and the ability to discipline fairly. One individual said that Facebook was not as good a way of communicating as emails.

Mega farm, ranch retailer opening this summer By JESSICA KING

W

ithin a few months, mega farm and ranch retailer Tractor Supply Co. will introduce itself to the San Diego County market with a new store opening on none other than Ramona’s Main Street. The nearly 20,000-square-foot store will open at Main and Hunter streets some time in the third quarter, according to Randy Guiler, Tractor Supply’s vice president investor relations. The contractor on the job, CSI Construction of Irvine, began construction on Feb. 5. A tentative completion date is late June. “Tractor Supply looks forward to being a member of the Ramona community,� said District Manager Bill LaBean. “Ramona is a great fit due to the parttime and hobby farmers, and horse owners in the area. And many of our new customers are surprised to find we also offer pet supplies and clothing items for the entire family.� “We are pleased to be opening our first San Diego County store in Ramona and look forward to growing our presence in other local markets,� said Guiler, adding that the company supports customers who prefer to live the rural lifestyle. Tractor Supply is based in the Nash-

ville suburb of Brentwood, Tenn. It has about 1,245 stores in 48 states. They each stock a variety of items, including animal feed, tools, fencing, home and gardening supplies, work clothing and, of course, tractors, lawn mowers and other agricultural-type vehicles. Each store also brings with it jobs for about 15 people. “Nearly all of the team members will be hired locally and we generally start the hiring process 60 to 90 days in advance of store openings,â€? said Guiler. The employment opportunities will be a mixture of full- and part-time help. Until the new store opens, the closest Tractor Supply Co. store to Ramona is in San Bernardino’s Yucca Valley, about 78 miles away. Tractor Supply is rumored to have plans to follow the Ramona opening with about a dozen other new stores in San Diego County, though the company has not publicly confirmed it. However, Guiler said the company has identified a total of 2,100 domestic markets for its stores and will continue to grow across the country, including in Southern California. Ramona Community Planning Group approved the new store last summer. It will front Hunter Street, with a street scene façade and landscaping facing

Main Street, said Ramona resident and developer Steve Powell, president of Woodcrest Homes, Inc. The architect on the project, Carole Wylie, is also from Ramona. Tractor Supply is the largest retail farm and ranch supply chain in the country and has been operating in California

since 2004, according to a statement from the firm’s marketing department. The store will include sales floor and support service space. Ramona sisters-in-law Karissa and Michelle Denny, coordinators of stitched.Market — Handmade & Vintage Inspired Market, will charge admission for the first time, but they will split 100 percent of the $1 per person entry fee among the Ramona Senior Center, Ramona Pregnancy Center and Ramona Town Hall. Thirty vendors will have booths at the event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Town Hall

Representatives of 32 teams will line up for the Opening Ceremony of American Cancer Society’s 2014 Relay for Life of Ramona at 8 a.m. Saturday. The 24-hour event, which raises money for cancer research and education, will be held at Wilson Stadium, 720 Ninth St. All are welcome. The Survivor/Caregiver Lap will kick off the relay at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by a breakfast to honor survivors and to

recognize their caregivers. This year’s Survivor of Hope is Ramona resident Darlene Scott. This is Scott’s fifth year walking in the Ramona relay. She will be walking in memory of Ramona resident and friend Carla Schuler. She said she walks in memory of loved ones who have lost their battle, in honor and support of those battling cancer, and in unity and friendship with fellow survivors. ing at craft markets, we noticed there wasn’t a huge selection of markets,� they said. With an eye toward generating an income, they held a stitched.Market at Karissa’s house. It attracted five vendors and about 100 shoppers. From their perspective, that was huge, they said. From there, they held a winter market in the Weise House at Ramona Oaks Park in 2012, attracting 12 vendors and nearly 200 shoppers. That’s when they decided they were ready to try downtown Ramona. They received a favorable response from Ramona Town Hall trustees, and held their first craft market there last April. Twentythree vendors participated and, Karissa and Michelle agreed, “it was an amazing show.� They launched their B R A N D

Fire Authority. “The truck came via capital expense grant money from the county,� said Intermountain Fire Chief Jeremy Christofferson. “Our old engine was put out of service a couple of years ago, and we’ve had a loaner engine since then.� The engine holds four, with jump seats for two additional crewmembers. The 500-gallon water tank can pump 1,500 gallons a minute. “This is a custom design that takes a Type A engine,� said Christofferson. “It can do residential work but can also go off road if needed. Many of our access roads are dirt and present off-road challenges. We need a truck chassis able to negotiate rough roads.“

The truck was built with a shorter wheelbase and additional front and rear clearance to allow for road bumps and holes. “Some of the best features are the improved visibility on all aspects of the truck, which is especially important when we are stopped somewhere on the road,� Christofferson said. For example, the vehicle is well lit, containing warning lights, compartment lights, telescopic floodlights and a brow light. Reflective stripes, stop signs and more also help the vehicle be seen in dark or obscured situations. The truck is expected to be in operation for at least the next 20 years. Ferrara Fire Appara-

tus of Holden, La., built the truck. The company has built approximately 4,000 fire trucks for departments all over the world. “With the recent drought conditions, the arrival of the new truck couldn’t have come at a better time,� said Maurice Waters, president of Intermountain department. “Having this engine added to the fleet is definitely a bonus.� Along with the delivery of the new engine, Intermountain Fire and Rescue Department received another gift from the county: new auto extrication equipment. The equipment is needed on the busy Highway 78 and 79 corridors, department officials agree.

A taste of our planning group By DIANE CHAPMAN I want a shortcut to Stater Bros.? Comments like this populated the Ramona Community Planning Group meeting April 3. Dennis Sprong, arriving late, felt he needed a faster way to get to the store. And we also learned that Dennis wanted a straighter road on Dye Street because it bothered him that people went fast on this stretch of road. This is just a taste of the educated and scientific notations from our planning group leaders during the meeting. It was interesting to watch. One would think that perhaps it was orchestrated far in advance. Don’t worry, folks. We are in very good hands. The majority of people in attendance were against the South Bypass, all four phases. But that did not prevent Jim Piva (I loved the Warnock solar plant before I hated it fame) from ignoring Carl Hickman’s suggestions that we move this item up on the agenda. And while going out of his way to suggest that everyone in Ramona wants a win-win and spending quite a bit of time on this happy theme with the organic farm issue, he neglected to be as magnanimous when addressing Donna Myers, Ken and Patty Brennecke, Joe Minervini and everyone else who came to oppose the bypass. By the way, is there a time limit on the chairman’s comments and asides? He took the lion’s share of the air in the room last night. “It will be over 50

years before we get to the Southern Bypass on Keyes Road,” says Jim, “so don’t bring this up if you are going to talk.” Then why not vacate this road, asked Kathy DaSilva? Others brought this up as well to no avail. More importantly, those who own property and business concerns that are affected by the bypass must disclose this during a sale and it will affect the value of their property. Mr. Hickman conceded that the bypass, Keyes Road phase, would not solve any of the current and future traffic issues that Ramona faces. He wisely observed that as long as we keep this portion of the bypass on the list, it gives Caltrans an out to fix the real problem — Highway 67. Most people with common sense agree that the focus on traffic should be the areas of growth (Cumming Ranch, Montecito Ranch) and the limited scope of Highway 67 to handle traffic as is. There is no growth coming from the Estates and Keyes Road. Hey, don’t worry everyone, says Jim, the Southern Bypass will not be built in my lifetime. But then, the time to vote came and Jim had a clever resolution. Put the Dye Road straightening and the new Dye Road bypass at Mussey Grade phases of the bypass onto the Top 10 roads list for the county. The fix was in. But Jim, why would we do the first 2 phases if the Keyes Road phase will never be built? Richard Tomlinson, a See COMMENTARY, page A6

Editor’s note: I arrived at work Monday to find 93 colorful postcards, 4 inches by 6 inches, that had been mailed on April 3. Most were signed, a few were from the same person, but all carried the same message. They want their community newspaper to cover Ramona TEA’d speakers. The Sentinel publishes advance notice of each Ramona TEA’d meeting, sometimes more than once a month. The meetings also are listed in the newspaper’s Our Town calendar. The gentleman who submits the information provides each speaker’s background and topic. We’ve occasionally had follow-up articles, but that was at the start of the monthly meetings. Dr. Gary Myers emailed a photo of last month’s speaker (see page A11). We thank him for his submission. The content of several postcards follows. We appreciate all of them and thank you for the mass mailing. You have made your point. Where’s the coverage? I don’t understand why the Sentinel does not report the activities of the Ramona TEA’d at the forum other than the advance notice of the monthly meeting submitted by Ramona TEA’d. It is not necessary to be a supporter of the tea party to report news. Knowledge of what is going on is important, especially in these troubling times of our country in turmoil. Vic Vizcarra HELP! We have nationally recognized speakers right here in Ramona almost ev-

ery month. Yet, the Ramona Sentinel ignores this. You could change this. Will you? Paul Tarr I have written several op-ed pieces over the years and appreciate your publication of them. However, I question the lack of coverage of Ramona TEA’d in your paper. We are in our fifth year and have sponsored several speakers that addressed many important issues, and yet the lack of coverage is troubling. Why, I ask. Jim Tapscott As a supporter of Ramona TEA’d, I have attended meetings (last Saturday of every month) that were packed with hundreds of patriots learning about important issues and never see any coverage in our community paper. Why not? John Plunkett I am dismayed at the lack of post-event coverage of Ramona TEA’d town hall meetings. Many of the speakers have appeared in the national media, yet your paper continues to avoid coverage of these speakers. I was able to sit in on a meeting in town to listen to a well-known blogger who is often covered in national and international news debates, and I was unable to locate any of your writers. civil engineer on the board, stated that the Dye Road portion was not necessary, that to straighten out the two 90 degree turns on the road would mean faster speeds and thus more serious head-on accidents. Ken Brennecke had provided data that there were no fatal accidents on Dye Road, that the few that were recorded were nondescript. In other words, there are no safety issues. So the $16 million spent on this will not affect a change and may make it worse. Kevin Wallace, a board member, lamented the fact that we were in a rush to turn Ramona into Poway. And most of the room agreed with him. There is no doubt that the Hwy. 67 and Highland is one of the worst traffic problems. Caltrans has been given money to enlarge and elongate this area and create a right-hand turn lane that would take the Estates traffic off Hwy. 67 earlier and alleviate the congestion. With this in mind, many citizens asked why the need for this phase of the Southern Bypass then? Last but not least is an interesting road project — the proposed and non-feasible Ramona Street extension. Tomlinson is one of the few board members to have visited the site. He told the room that the road is a bad idea, he cannot see how it can be built and, worse, at least one home will be destroyed. This road would be dumping traffic onto a

road where three schools reside. To date, the study for this road is almost up to $1 million. Ken and Patty Brennecke as well as Jim Cooper have said this road makes no sense. The engineering and traffic data are ignored and few board members have visited the site. Yet, they are willing to vote on this? Anyone from the Estates contemplating this new route would be going backwards to get to town. There would be a stop sign near the Ramona Street and Dye Road portion of the road and it would take longer. And thus, this route would not be used. Finally, Jim Piva called for a vote. HE structured the vote for the entire list, not road by road. This meant that Donna Myers was excluded from voting. During the Transportation and Trails meeting, the list of road projects were voted on one by one, a fair way to vote. Due to political maneuvering, Piva took the right to vote from Donna. A conflict of interest, he told her. Yet, what about Dennis Sprong, who lives on Gem Lane, next to the Keyes Road phase of the bypass. And what about Eb Hogervorst, who has family/financial interests in the chicken farm that is along the bypass route. Diane Chapman is a Ramona resident. from the many hours Scott has donated to improve our community in all areas. Eileen Castberg performs her role as a board member without a personal agenda. She contributes many long and tiring hours to make SDCEA a wonderful community. Along with the time given to board meetings and other community affairs, she volunteers to assist in the holidays decorating of the SDCEA clubhouse. Another of the many things that Eileen was instrumental in getting done was the installation of our military flag display in front of the lodge. SDCEA is unified with Ramona but as homeowners we pay for the amenities that our community has to offer. We all use Ramona amenities as we choose, as our tax dollars pay for this. As far as using local businesses when we can, that is a great idea and should be done when the talent and the price is right. We need someone who knows what is going on in their community 100 percent of the time. My husband and I have owned property here since 1993 and became fulltime residents in 2005 moving here with a 15-year-old grandchild we raised. A fiscal watchdog I am strongly recommending Perry Jones for your vote in the San Diego Country Estates Association election. I have known Perry and wife Janet since they moved here in 1986. Perry has served for 26 years as treasurer of homeowners associations, including SDCE. He is a “true blue� fiscal conservative, especially with other people’s money, which is hard to find in this world of ours. He does not just go-along to be politically correct. Before he supports any issue or purchase, he investigates and makes sure the costs are needed and cost-effective, not just a “splurge.� Perry is a fiscal watchdog. You can be at ease when Perry is in charge of the purse strings. To his credit he has an education and work history completely devoted to finances. From a B.S. in business administration and School of Financial Management at Stanford University to retired bank vice president, branch manager, branch administrator, and commercial loan administrator. His tireless work on the SDCE Board these many years has saved the homeowners countless dollars and he always has as his goal, no increase in monthly assessments. He is a good steward of your money. Congregations schedule Holy Week services

Ramona congregations invite the community to Holy Week worship services. Among them are: First Congregational Church Palm Sunday services will be on Sunday, April 13, at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Services will include performances by the

adult choirs and bell choir. Also joining the celebration will be the children’s choir, Heaven Bound, for the Call to Worship “Sing, Hosanna, Sing.” A Maundy Thursday service will be held on April 17 at 7 p.m. Described as an extremely moving service, it recalls the events

of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, including the celebration of Holy Communion. The congregation’s combined choir, including friends from the community, will sing a contemporary Tenebrae Service. Easter Sunday worship services will be held on

April 20 at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., with Sunday School at the 10 and 11 a.m. services. The congregation welcomes all for what is considered the Christian faith’s most exciting and joy-filled day. The celebration will be in word and in song. The church is at 404

1943, in Cosenza, Italy. He was the son of the late Giovanni and Rosina Donato. Joseph owned and operated the successful Mamma Rosa Restaurant in Ramona, California for over 35 years. He had a passion for nice cars, music, and foreign films. His favorite pastime was having an intellectual discussion about social, political and economic issues. Joseph surrounded himself with children and enjoyed dinners with close family and friends. He was a compassionate, generous, selfless and gentle man that understood the true meaning of love. He was known as “Uncle Joe”, to all the countless lives he touched. Joseph is survived by two brothers; five sisters; twelve nephews; nine nieces; and forty-seven (47) great nephews/nieces! He is also survived by two very special girls that he loved very much, Mindy and Monica and Monica’s children, Penelope and Ashton. Ramon was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 12 and worked at VR Dennis as a heavy equipment operator until a second stroke forced him into retirement well after normal retirement age. During his 40 years employment with VR Dennis, he only called in sick one day. In 2005, he moved to Ramona with daughter Ana Cosio, son in law Rich and granddaughter Clara where he resumed his passion for gardening and enjoyed playing cards at Barona Casino. Most of all, he loved his family and enjoyed family gatherings. He was the kindest, sweetest man who we will miss more than words can say. He is survived by his six children; Javier Ruiz, Maria Cecilia Ruiz, Vicky Moore, Marta Ruiz, Ana Cosio and Julieta Stafford; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and extended family. 1938 – 2014 Patricia Ann Jones Brown of Ramona, CA, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2014, following a short illness. Pat was born Feb 26, 1938, in Henderson, Kentucky to the late Hugh Allen Jones and Mary Elizabeth (Peg) Nelson Jones. She married her college sweetheart, Don R. Brown on August 16, 1958 and enjoyed a long, happy marriage. Don and Pat moved from Kentucky to California in 1972 and settled in Ramona in 1981 where they lived for 33 years. Pat enjoyed painting, Padre’s baseball, playing cards and board games, but most of all she loved and enjoyed her family. She was a sweet and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed by everyone she met. In addition to her husband, Pat is,

also,survived by her sisters, Beth Jones Sprague(Steve) and Roz Jones Watson(Bill); her three children, Lynn Brown-Pastirchak (Mike), Cindy Brown Blatchley and Scott A. Brown (Michelle); and seven grandchildren. The services will be held on April 11, 2014, at 9:00am, at Grace Community Church in Ramona, CA. Ramon Ruiz Gomez Ramon, 90, was born October 23, 1923, in Villabascones de Sotoscuella, Burgos, Spain to Victor Ruiz and Victorina Gomez. He passed away on March 19, 2014. As a child he was a refugee of the Spanish Civil War and he and his siblings were split up and sent to live with volunteer foster families in France. He emigrated to USA in 1956 where he married the one true love of his life Luz “Cita” Freeman in 1955, who sadly preceded him in death in 1975. While raising six children and

Food prep for performance We are creatures of habit and creatures of convenience. Just as water takes the easiest path down a hill, we by nature take the easiest path when it comes to our nutrition. This does not and can not work for long-term worthwhile wellness. You may be able to cut corners now, but lasting success is not often attainable through shortcuts and fast fixes. There’s no other area that this holds true more than with our eating habits. Since the advent of McDonald’s and contem-

porary assembly line fast food in 1948, Americans have been finding fast and easy ways to purchase, ingest and acquire foods along the path of least resistance. From the counter to the car, the quickest, easiest and most reasonable foods win the battle, but the battle of the bulge continues, and in the meantime we are making ourselves sick through the foods we eat. The tipping point toward proper eating is leaning in the right direction. Fortunately, America is making a course correction and healthier options are popping up on

the fast foods scene. Calorie totals are on menu boards, appropriate portion sizes and better, not perfect, ingredients are being used. These are all fantastic positives, but if optimal health and worthwhile wellness is the goal, you must “food prep for performance.” 1. Have at least one meal prep day per week. Sunday is a great day to make this happen. 2. Get matching and color-coded containers that are the right portion size — one color for lunches and one color for dinners. 3. Prepare at least two meals per day, lunch and dinner, or breakfast and lunch. 4. Get the crap out of your cabinets. If it’s tasty, it’s easy to grab, and, if you’re hungry, you’ll eat. Get rid of it, donate it, remove it from the house.

5. Stop eating out every day, every week, every month. If you eat out every day, stop it. If you eat out three times per week, cut it to one. If you eat out five times per week, cut it to two or three. Wherever you’re at, cut it in half and replace those meals with “food prepped for performance.” 6. If you do eat out, have a game plan. Know where you’re going to eat and research the nutrition facts to make sure you’re on plan. 7. Start leaning toward organic, minimal or nonprocessed foods and eat your veggies. These seven habits of Food Prep Performance will surely help achieve your goals. It’s not easy, it’s not always fun, but within days you will feel better, look better and may even save some money by skipping out on the drive-through.

Girls lacrosse beats San Dieguito Academy By JOE NAIMAN Applying lessons from past deficiencies, Ramona High School’s girls lacrosse team beat San Dieguito Academy for its first Valley League triumph of the season. “They took into account everything that we had said at practice,” said assistant coach Al Cavell. “The team did really, really well. They looked probably the best they’ve looked all season.” The Bulldog girls will face Helix High School for the first time this year on Thursday at Ramona High. “We don’t really know necessarily what to expect,” said Cavell. “We’ll

play better,” Cavell said. “Communication was probably the drawback of that game,” he said. “We learned that we had to work on talking to one another on the field.”

The Nighthawks’ junior varsity team obtained an 11-3 victory at the Ramona JV team’s expense, although Cavell noted that Del Norte’s skill level left the Bulldogs with little

The varsity tennis team made a statement before starting its 20-day spring break. The Dawgs beat Valley League foe Orange Glen 18-0 at Riviera Oaks. “We had Christian (Failla) back in this match and our singles line up was unstoppable,” said coach Rose Darrough. “Chad Martin and Seneca Utech continue to play very strong in doubles. Karl Sapper and Matt Lawler subbed in for our No. 3 doubles team and won their first varsity point. The whole team played well as we are playing for a good draw in the CIF team playoffs.”

oach Michael Gainey’s Bulldog golf team had a busy and productive week as it won three matches on the road, beating Valley League foes Mission Vista and Orange Glen, and, in a non-league tilt, Francis Parker. Ryan Graff continued to pile up medalist honors as he added two more to his resume. The Dawgs are 11-1 overall and are at the top in the Valley League with a 4-0 record. “The team did great, continuing their awesome winning streak as we’ve hit the halfway point of the season,” said Gainey, adding that he and the team were looking forward to competing at home against Francis Parker on Wednesday,

April 9, and San Pasqual on Thursday, April 10. On Friday evening, the golf team will have its annual long drive competition, said Gainey. “There will be three flights of competitors: junior varsity, varsity and an open division for anyone wishing to take a shot at hitting a long drive and winning one of the many great prizes,” he explained. By JOE NAIMAN The bad news for Ramona High School’s girls track and field team is that it lost its Valley League opener at home against Valley Center, but the good news is that head coach Sherri Edwards has likely found a high jumper for future meets. Ramona sophomore Holly Stallman, who established herself as a sprinter last year, made

the April 3 meet her first competition in the high jump and won that event with a distance of 5 feet. “That was fun finally getting to see her high jump,” Edwards said. Stallman had competed in the high jump while at Olive Peirce Middle School, but had not tried that event in high school until the Bulldogs’ April 1 practice. She cleared 5 feet during that practice, causing Edwards to enter

her in the dual meet two days later. Stallman accounted for 20 of Ramona’s points in the Jaguars’ 81-55 victory. She also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team and won the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Ramona's track and field loses to Valley Center in final events By JOE NAIMAN During Ramona High School’s boys track and field meet April 3, Valley Center swept the 23 possible points in the final two running events and the last field event for a 75-60 victory. The 10 running events conclude with the 3,200-meter race and the 4x400 relay. The last of the six field events is the triple jump. “I was hoping for a win,� said head coach Sherri Edwards. “It was close, but it didn’t work out.� Edwards has hope for the Bulldogs’ Valley League meet Thursday, hosted by Orange Glen. Orange Glen lost to Del Norte, 103-32, giving

the Bulldogs a reasonable chance for their first league win. Despite the loss to Valley Center, Edwards was satisfied with the Ramona athletes’ performance in the league opener. Ramona’s quartet of Garrett Dart, Tanarat Crowe, Brandon Gansch and Garrett Binkley won 4x100 relay with a time of 44.53 seconds, which was the fastest of the year for Ramona in that event. The Bulldogs swept the 9 points in the 100-meter dash. Crowe had a time of 11.56 seconds, Kevin Ochoa finished the race in 11.74 seconds and Garrett Binkley finished third at 11.75 seconds. Ramona had the top two distances in the pole vault. Brandon Hankins

cleared 11 feet, 6 inches while John Jones, who joined the track and field team this year as a senior, earned his first varsity points with a vault of 9-6. The Bulldogs also had the top two times in the 400-meter run. Kevin Carmona needed 52.98 seconds to win the race while Austin Minnocci completed his lap in 53.04 seconds. Ramona’s Dylan Shields and Valley Center’s Jake Newman each cleared 5-6 in the high jump before making their attempts with the bar 5-8 off the ground. Both missed their first two attempts at 5-8. Valley League play will test the Ramona High boys volleyball team’s ability to compete with the top squads in the circuit. The Bulldogs compete at Valley Center on Friday. They won their Valley League opener April 2 at Del Norte and played competitively April 4 in a four-game loss at Escondido. “We played pretty well,” said coach Jeff Klauda. “It was encouraging. We’re getting better every time we come out.” Ramona’s 1-1 league record after two matches was part of an overall 6-7 season mark. The Bulldogs’ match at Del Norte included a 25-20 loss in the second game, but 25-23 victories in games one and three and a 26-24 triumph in the fourth set. “The guys played pretty well,” Klauda said. “It was the best defense I’ve seen from anybody all year long.” In the fourth game the Nighthawks had a 2320 lead before Ramona scored the next 2 points. The Bulldogs obtained a sideout after a rally in which Windes had three digs and then scored the game’s final 5 points from plays originating with serves by Spieker. Stickney had 12 kills against Escondido and a .409 hitting percentage. Windes, Kealy and middle blocker Trevor Johnson each had seven kills. Spieker provided 38 assists. Windes led the team with 20 digs. The Bulldogs will play in the Easter Invitational tournament in Las Vegas next week.
