Ramona 4-H and Future Farmers of America members once again returned from San Diego County Fair with top awards. Among them are Kaylin vanTol, Christopher Wier, Brenna Alvarez, Jazmine Zwicker and Carney Flinn. After two years of earning supreme reserve champion designation at the San Diego County Fair for a veal calf she raised, Kaylin vanTol settled for reserve champion dairy calf at the 2014 San Diego County Fair. The 17-year-old vanTol, who recently completed her junior year at Mountain Valley Academy, won reserve champion recognition with Olaf, a Holstein who was born March 6 and was 405 pounds when weighed by fair officials. VanTol also took second place in showmanship for market calves and in master showmanship for large animals and was also second in the Bred and Fed competition for calves bred in San Diego County and nourished from feed stores or other sources within the county. "I was not disappointed because I know I had brought quality animals and it was going to be tough and other people also brought quality animals," said vanTol, who entered Sven along with Olaf. The fair competition starts with weight class honors in the animal's breed. The grand and reserve champions of each weight class then compete for champion and reserve champion breed See 4-H, FFA, page A2
Tree trust wants historic designation for colonnade By KAREN BRAINARD Known as the colonnade, the west entrance to Ramona that is lined with towering eucalyptus trees and was established in 1909 deserves historic recognition, say those involved with the Ramona Tree Trust. However, how such
designation could affect possible widening of state Route 67/Main Street or future development are concerns that others express. Some tree trust members attended a recent Ramona Design Review Board meeting seeking support for the application to nominate the col-
onnade for the National Register of Historic Places. Ramona Tree Trust secretary Chis Anderson, who stepped down from her seat on the design review board to address the members, noted that the colonnade is over 100 years old. "You have a chance to
County budget includes money for chamber, murals, museum By JOE NAIMAN San Diego County's 2014-15 budget includes Community Enhancement money for Ramona Chamber of Commerce, Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project and Ramona Pioneer Historical Society. The money, which totals $85,000, comes from the Transient Occupancy Tax revenue the county charges hotels, motels and other temporary lodging establishments in the unincorporated part of the county. Ramona Chamber of Commerce received $55,000. The Ramona mural project corporation and Ramona Pioneer Historical So-
ciety will receive $15,000 apiece. Each of the county's five supervisors receives a $599,393 Community Enhancement budget and recommends how to spend the money based on requests received. The entire board of supervisors then ratifies the recommendations. Each county supervisor also has a $1 million discretionary Neighborhood Reinvestment Program budget, so some Community Enhancement requests can be fulfilled by that source. The Ramona chamber had requested $78,000. Based on its application, the $55,000 it will receive will help fund community events including the annual See TOURIST TAX, page A4
honor the past," she said. Ramona Tree Trust president Diane Conklin said the application's paperwork was "a long haul getting this done." According to the tree trust's history of the colonnade, of the 302 trees along Main Street, 226 are historic eucalyptus trees planted between 1909 and 1931. Anderson said the trees in the colonnade are part of the Caltrans right of way and seeking the historic designation would not impact any private property rights. "It doesn't do anything but give recognition to the 100-year-old colonnade," she said of the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the statements that she presented to support the cause include: •The colonnade is an example of a natural feature welcoming all to Ramona with its overarching tree canopy and its cooling shade. •There are few of these

types of colonnades left in Southern California. •Ramona wouldn't be Ramona as we know it without this defining feature, which is a gateway, not only to the town but to the San Diego backcountry. •The colonnade has been added to in a significant way over the past 15 years. Some 80 new trees have been planted and there are more plantings to come. Recognition for the colonnade would not limit other activity or actions, said Anderson. Developer Steve Powell, a Ramona resident, and real estate agent Sharon Quisenberry questioned how the designation might restrict development. Anderson, also a real estate agent, said she didn't think it would change anything because Caltrans has already been treating the eucalyptus trees as a natural re-

Friends of Ramona Skatepark launch photo contest on Facebook In an effort to generate and organize community support for a skatepark, Friends of the Ramona Skatepark is spearheading a promotional campaign that starts with the Summer Skater Photo Contest. The photo contest on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ RamonaSkatepark encourages Ramona skaters to submit photos of their best tricks for a chance to win prizes. Skaters may enter one photo per day through Aug. 23 on the Facebook entry page.
"Get your friends and family to 'like' your photo, and the photos with the most 'likes' win," reads a statement from the group, which describes itself as "a local group of residents, parents, businesses and activists dedicated to the mission of building and operating a community skatepark in Ramona." The proposed location is the Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus on land surrounding Ramona Branch Library. First prize in the photo contest

honors. There is a grand and reserve champion for each animal among breed champions raised by 4-H and Grange members. The Future Farmers of America breed champions compete for FFA grand and reserve champion. The 4-H grand and reserve champions and the FFA grand and reserve champions then compete for supreme grand champion and supreme reserve champion honors. VanTol is the youngest of four sisters. Between 2009 and 2012 Raeann vanTol won either supreme grand champion or supreme reserve champion for veal calves at the county fair. In 2012, she won supreme grand champion while Kaylin won supreme reserve champion. That year the vanTol sisters also took the top two places in veal showmanship and the top two places in the Bred and Fed competition. Raeann is majoring in animal science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. "We've been blessed to have had one several years in a row," Kaylin said of animals her family has raised reaching the supreme level. The vanTol family owns TD Dairy in Ramona, one of three remaining dairies in the county. One of the other dairies is Konyn Dairy in San Pasqual Val-

Konyn and vanTol then competed for supreme grand and reserve champion honors against beef calves raised by Japatul 4-H members Sarah Drown and Rachel Shellstrom. Drown was this year's supreme grand champion and Shellstrom won supreme reserve champion honors. "You can only win so many times and someone else is going to come up," vanTol said of missing the

"Beef are more stout," vanTol said. "They have a lot more muscle and power." Those traits are more preferable for obtaining beef than for milk-oriented activity. "Dairy cattle are taller and leaner," she said. VanTol obtained both her calves and the milk to feed them from her parents' dairy, qualifying her for a Bred and Fed award. After taking second place in showmanship for market calves, she placed second among eight competitors in the master showmanship competition for large animals. "I beat out a lot of really competitive players, so I was very proud of myself," she said. She considers the fair competition an educational experience. "I'm learning," she said. "You learn a lot. You learn time management. You learn hard work." VanTol also raises pigs. She plans to enter two pigs at this year's Ramona Junior Fair, scheduled from July 26 through Aug. 3, with the livestock auction on Aug. 2. The auction at the county fair took place July 5. James Penney of Ultra Cal purchased Olaf for $3 per pound. Only one animal per 4-H or FFA member may be sold at auction, so Penney purchased Sven
Committee, RICCC, is the entity trusted by the county to advise on the plans and use for this designated park land," the group's statement continues. "The Friends of the Ramona Skatepark is a grassroots community group intended to work with RICCC to get the job done." The photo contest, one of other promotions that will be held as momentum for the project builds, will help the friends "get to know and generate enthusiasm from the local skaters
and their families, who will be the community our skatepark hopes to serve," they said. They encourage the community to like Ramona Skatepark on Facebook or join the discussion in the Facebook group — www.facebook.com/groups/ ramonaskatepark. In the discussion group, they encourage Ramona residents to ask questions and voice concerns. "We hope to generate enthusiasm and volunteerism for the project from our group members," they said.

Rabbit Championships The San Diego County Fair livestock competition includes rabbit meat pens consisting of three rabbits in each pen. Jazmine Zwicker of Ramona High School's FFA chapter was the supreme grand champion as well as the FFA champion, and Ramona's Carney Flinn was the 4-H reserve champion. ton to win the Knowledge Bowl for small animals. Flinn, who also entered a sheep in the county fair, partnered with Nicole Donais and Patricia Herrera to take second place in the Knowledge Bowl for large animals. The rabbits must be no older than 69 days as of the judging date and must weigh between 3 and 5 pounds. Rabbits may be younger than 69 days, although older rabbits have more meat and weight. Similar size is one of the judging criteria. Flinn, who recently completed her sophomore year at Ramona High School, has entered rabbits in the county fair since 2009. She was the reserve grand champion in 2011, won supreme grand champion in 2012 and was supreme reserve champion in 2013. Katie Flinn completed the sisters' sweep of the top two awards in 2012 by winning supreme reserve champion, and she was supreme grand champion in 2013. Carney Flinn was also the 4-H reserve champion last year. Her firstplace prize for meat rabbit showmanship this year enabled her to compete in the round-robin master showmanship competition for small animals, where she finished second and her sister took third place. Her three rabbits, which weighed approximately 4-1/2 pounds apiece, were born in April.
Swine Championships Christopher Wier wasn't supposed to compete at the San Diego County Fair this year. A 2013 Ramona High School graduate, he was preparing for an agricultural business career by taking classes at Modesto Community College during the fall 2013 semester. His plans changed in November when his mother, Lisa, was thrown from a horse and broke her pelvis. Wier returned to Ramona to run the ranch, and he utilized an alumni year to continue his county fair competition with swine he raised. This year Wier won the Bred and Fed competition in the senior division for swine bred in San Diego County and nourished from feed stores or other sources within the county with Stagger, a gilt (female) who weighed 237 See 4-H, FFA page A3

Resident Joe Minervini echoed those thoughts. Anderson said it would leave the door open, especially as no federal

pounds on the fair scales. He also took second place for showmanship with Stagger, who placed third in the middleweight class. Wier also entered Hollywood, a 221-pound gilt who took second in the lightweight class. The swine competition utilized breed divisions through 2012 and replaced those with weight classes in 2013. Wier has entered pigs in the county fair each year since 2010, when he won 4-H grand champion for all other breeds, reserve grand champion for the hampshire breed, and the swine Bred and Fed competition. In 2011, Wier, a member of Ramona Paisanos 4-H, was the 4-H grand champion and the supreme reserve champion. In 2012, he won the hampshire class and the Bred and Fed award. Wier started CW Livestock in 2012, and his first litter produced a hampshire cross that earned him 2013 supreme reserve champion and 4-H reserve grand champion honors. He also won Bred and Fed honors for 2013. This year he had a
money would be spent on the designation. If accepted into the national registry, Anderson said the tree trust would pay for a plaque. But when it came time for a vote to support the application, the motion did not garner enough votes. At least five votes were needed. With two members of the nine-member board absent, Anderson stepping down, and two members abstaining, just four members voted in support. As to the tree trust's next step, Conklin said, "We're considering our options."

A fire early last Thursday morning in the Santa Maria Creek bed near the Montecito Road bridge started in what was described as a "hobo encampment" and burned about half an acre of trash and brush, reported Ramona Fire Department. No injuries were reported and no one was at the encampment when emergency responders arrived, said Cal Fire Apparatus Engineer/Paramedic Shawn Warcup with the Ramona Fire Department. The call came in at 12:30 a.m. and firefighters were released from the scene two hours later, he said. According to Warcup, the fire burned a quarter to half of the encampment. "It's pretty massive back in there. It's horrible," he said of all the items that have been brought into
the dry creek bed by those who live or hang out in that spot. The cause of the fire has not been determined,
he said. Units from Ramona's Station 80 and 82 and Cal Fire's Mount Woodson station responded to the fire.

Spotlight on Local | Businesses Creative Vine blends creativity with dining and wine By PIXIE SULSER "Create, Dine and Wine with Friends!” is the slogan of a new business in town known as The Creative Vine, an enterprise that intertwines social gatherings with the sensory delights of food, drink and creativity. Calling upon her 30 years of experience in event planning, Ramona resident and Creative Vine owner Barbara Blankenbaker coordinates with local chef Kitty Brisendine of Something Delicious and a variety of resident artisans to offer intimate get-togethers where guests participate in a creative activity while enjoying food and wine at one of Ramona’s wineries. "This has been a wonderful experience, bringing together so many local resources as well as designing fun events," commented Blankenbaker, who came up with the idea after being invited to “paint and sip” classes outside of Ramona. "The
events were always down the hill, on a weeknight and usually just farther than I wanted to drive. Also, they were more like art classes where participants were invited to bring their own food and wine and everyone painted the same picture. I thought there has to be a way to do this closer to home and to provide a wider scope of activities.” Part of Blankenbaker’s business plan is to keep things as local as possible. “Our venues are all in and around Ramona, many of the artisans are either from Ramona or a neighboring area, and even the food from Something Delicious always includes produce from local farm stands.” The Creative Vine’s inaugural event was a sold out affair at Turtle Rock Ridge Winery and featured the creation of a small multimedia painting that could be turned into a greeting card. Subsequent events have included personalized wine glasses, home accent
pieces from wine barrel staves, stamped jewelry making and customized barbeue rubs. “The Barbecue rub event was a great idea,” shared participant Julie McCall, who has attended four other Creative Vine events. “It got the husbands or boyfriends involved and besides, who doesn’t like barbecue? The Highland Hills Winery was a beautiful backdrop for learning about different barbecue techniques, creating customized rubs, sipping wine, eating good food and watching the sun set.” "The positive feedback after each event has been wonderful," said Blankenbaker. "I have a handful of guests, men and women, who come every time. People enjoy getting together with friends old and new, sharing scrumptious food and incredible wines in new and beautiful settings." What has been her biggest challenge in getting this venture off the
ground? "The weather,” laughed Blankenbaker. “Once the occasion is planned and calendared, it will go on." A spring event at the Vineyard Grant James began with a mad scramble to clean out a storage barn on the property when one of this year's rare rainstorms blew through. "It all worked out, though," said Blankenbaker. "We were nice and cozy with heaters inside the barn, the food and wine were just as delicious as ever, and the activity, painting wine glasses led by Lorri and Candy, owners of Rusty Scraps located at Affordable Treasures was a wonderful way to spend a rainy day." Working for concert promoters most of her adult life and growing up in Connecticut with a mother who took her three daughters to visit the art world of New York City made the birth of The Creative Vine a perfect blending of Blankenbaker’s life experiences.
Gina Walter of Ramona sniffs the customized barbecue rub she created at a Creative Vine event at Highland Hills Winery.

SDG&E can meet summer demands, but conservation needed during heat waves and unplanned outages, say utility leaders Electrical supplies will be adequate in San Diego and southern Orange counties this summer, but conservation will be needed during heat waves or unplanned power plant outages, San Diego Gas & Electric officials agree. "SDGE is prepared to meet this summer's energy demand but we expect that there will be days when we will need help from customers through conservation and demand response, and we appreciate all efforts by our customers so far this year to help keep the electric system running smoothly during the
recent wildfires," said Steven Davis, SDG&E president and chief operating officer. Utility officials said customers responded well during May's heat wave to calls to reduce power use. The Sunrise Powerlink transmission line that carries energy from Imperial County continues to increase reliability and improve Southern California's ability to import power, particularly from new renewable projects, according to SDG&E. The utility said it has worked to increase the reliability of the local grid over the past year with
enhancements to major transmission systems. Coordination continues with the California Independent System Operator Corporation and Southern California Edison on contingency plans for adequate electricity resources for customers throughout Southern California without the San Onofre nuclear plan in operation. "While we have enough supply to get us through the most extreme weather conditions, things we can't predict, such as wildfires impacting transmission lines, can still create reliability challenges in Southern Cali-

Food and Clothes Closet partners with county to reduce food waste By KAREN BRAINARD With the help of Ramona Food and Clothes Closet, Ramona is a pilot study for the county's "Take a Bite out of Waste" program to reduce the amount of edible food that goes into landfills. By businesses donating produce and other food that is still edible but has exceeded its shelf life to be distributed to families in need, the program becomes a win for residents, businesses — who can save money on disposal costs — and the environment, said a consultant working with the county on the project. A lot of food that is still edible goes into landfills and produces greenhouse gas emissions, said consultant Rich Flammer of Hidden Resources. "We want to keep that out of the landfill. We want to feed people,"
FREE
Flammer commented. "Considering a lot of our families don't get a lot of fresh food...I love it," Jae Marciano, Ramona Food and Clothes Closet general manager, said of the program. Listing such donated produce as tomatoes, plums, cantaloupe, oranges and zucchini, Marciano said the program is also "about giving people more nutritious food." So far two Ramona businesses are donating food: Pepe's Produce and Ramona Market Grocery. Ramona Food and Clothes Closet picks up their donations three times a week. Marciano said anyone who comes to the store can pick up donated food items for free. She noted that the produce generally should be eaten that day. Food donations are available at the store Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons. The store at 773 Main Street is
open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those in the community who have extra produce from their gardens are encouraged to bring it to the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet, Marciano added. "Take a Bite Out of Waste" is a result of a new law from Assembly Bill 341 that seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting commercial solid waste to recycling efforts. It is overseen by the county's Department of Public Works Solid Waste Planning and Recycling Section. Project Coordinator Michael Wonsidler said the pilot program in Ramona will finish by late fall but he hopes it will become permanent. Information gleaned from Ramona's participation will provide guidance to expand the program to other communities, he said.

A water main break at Main and Rotanzi streets Monday afternoon affected about 47 Ramona Municipal Water District customers and slowed traffic in that area as it was diverted around the site of the leak. RMWD Water Superintendent Johnny Brean said staff worked through the night to repair the pipe, and all affected customers had water by 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. He expected to have road repairs completed by Tuesday afternoon. According to Brean, the call came in at 1:20 p.m. Monday and the leak came from a four-inch diameter hole in the 16-inch steel water main that runs along Main Street and was installed around 1960.
"We found just a hole in the pipe — we made a repair to it," said Brean. The water superintendent said the break could have been caused by rusting that gradually occurred after something hit that spot in the water line years ago. To repair the water main, staff dug out a section on the south side of Main Street at Rotanzi that was about 80 feet long and 15 feet wide. RMWD General Manager David Barnum said Caltrans was notified and sent out an inspector. As of Tuesday morning, Barnum did not have an estimate of the repairs but said there is money in the district's water fund for emergency repairs. —Karen Brainard

Tire ination & alignment is extremely important for vehicle performance and fuel mileage, you could loose as much as 3 to 4 miles per gallon with the wrong tire ination & a bad alignment. Inate the tires to the Vehicle manufacture recommendation and check them once a week. As for the alignment, the tires should be wearing evenly from side to side. In Ramona the tire wear on the front tires will wear on the both outside edges - (because of our mountain roads).

True public servant is a rare treasure By J. DYER Public service was once considered a noble path. Individuals in public service did their various jobs with the focus of making the lives of the citizen taxpayer (their acknowledged bosses) safer, freer, and less complicated. Public servants were generally held in high regard because they worked for the public good and, when paid, their compensation was less than what was typically offered for similar work in the private sector. Public servants were sensitive to the squandering of tax dollars and attempted to be frugal with the budgets entrusted to them. Public servants were generally honest, dedicated to their oaths of office, and straightforward in their dealings with their constituents. Public servants were a vanguard against a wasteful, unresponsive, and overbearing government bureaucracy. The concept of public service is dying, and the true public servant is a rare treasure. Too many people now enter “public service” for power, for the political connections that can lead to favoritism, and for good pay with little accountability for ethical service. The death of this great ideal of the public servant has been playing out at the local school board meetings over the last several weeks. During
these meetings, school board members and Ramona Unified School District staff have been discussing strategies to sway enough voters to approve their latest attempt at a bond measure to be placed on the November 2014 ballot. You have rejected these strategies to raise your property taxes numerous times over the last decade. A public service oriented board would have gotten your “no new taxes” message after the first few rejections. Public servants on that board would have proceeded to do what was necessary to get district employees to work within their given budget because the people they are supposed to be serving told them to do so. If this would have been done, you could have been spared the current manufactured threat of “educational armageddon” coming from the current board and their district staff cohorts. Working within a budget is not impossible to do. It can be very difficult — even unpleasant, but it is not impossible. The district staff that supplies the board with the data it needs to make fiscal decisions seems to operate with the presupposition that meeting a budget in public education is impossible. Their presentations and the data they present to the board are slanted to support See COMMENTARY, DYER page B5

School trustee needs to resign By DAMON BALDWIN Upon reading another one of John Rajcic's complaining, attacking opinions in the Sentinel, many of my fellow professional colleagues that work for RUSD got together to review his latest insult and attack on educators and RUSD in general. Yes, this is a school board member for RUSD who called educators, football coaches, and union rep leaders "parasites"....Yes "parasites". (He may try to rationalize that his friend said what he wrote and had printed in the Sentinel—Are you serious?) Last time I checked Webster's Dictionary it says that "Parasites are organisms living on each other." Well, let's see. I could use this column like Rajcic has to slander and attack him, but I will not waste my time since, being a "parasite" for RUSD, I am way too busy trying to help kids and develop them for their futures.
Actually, for some weird reason this person was elected as a school board member by our community. Now I must say that I don't think our community really knows this man. It really would make no difference if John Rajcic resigned his position and gave it to a person that will actually VOTE yes or no on a vote that influences our kids and town instead of being on the board to just cause tension, fights and make accusations. SO..... I sat down to type this while getting up at 5 a.m. to go educate over 150 "football players, basketball players, wrestlers, baseball players, track athletes, science students, math students, English students, fusion leaders, and others on this beautiful summer day." John Rajcic needs to do the right thing and resign his position as a school board member. He has no intention in making See COMMENTARY, BALDWIN page B5
decisions that will help our children. He has no intentions in helping our school district improve itself, and this November, when our community has a huge decision to make, to decide not only where they want our schools to go. But our community and property values and small business success likely hangs on a Yes vote for the school bond. If this Mr. Rajcic continues to slander and publicly attack the people that work 80 hours a week in making our kids better people, then how is he a TEAM player. You see, Mr. Rajcic, in football, a player that is NOT a team player we try and teach them the importance of working together and overcoming obstacles when under duress. I do not expect you to have a clue about what all of us do. In fact, af-
From page B4
ter reading your articles I wonder if you have any pulse at all about what RUSD and its "parasites" actually do. Since we are all parasites — at least we live on each other and are on one team — we have a fighting chance under tough circumstances to still make our children succeed. Since you are not a parasite, I do not expect you to understand anything I am writing here, but I do hope you do the right thing and resign your seat on the RUSD school board so that the children of Ramona have a chance to grow up in improved schools and programs. Parasites deserve team players and you certainly have no clue about what that is! Damon Baldwin is Ramona High School's director of athletics and head football coach.

false assumption. When a board member challenges the notion of passing an unbalanced budget by asking staff members for more specifics about questionable priorities, vague wording, or confusing/conflicting dollar figures, the district staff generally responds with excuses for why the requested clarifying information cannot be given. Discussion then drags on about why specifics can’t or shouldn’t be given about a particular concern. Board members show confusion and exasperation over the lack of clarifying specifics from staff about these issues. Finally, worn down by unproductive discussion, the board relents, district staff proceeds with its agenda, the district’s budget remains an unbalanced mystery, and the quest to increase your

property taxes presses forward. This board is not serving the taxpayers well. Instead of protecting us from the money hungry, budget busting educational bureaucracy, they are being out-maneuvered by it. Instead of being responsible stewards of our public funds and requiring fiscal discipline and clarity by school district staff, they have joined in the effort to take the school district’s massive debt off the backs of those who created it, and place that debt burden on our backs — the very people who told them not to go into debt in the first place. Do you want to pay hundreds of dollars more in property taxes each year at Christmas time? Would you be willing to pay higher property taxes if you knew the
money was going to end up mostly paying for increased salaries and benefits for district employees? Are you willing to pay higher property taxes knowing that, historically, increased funding for government schools does not lead to a better education for students and does not lead to higher student test scores? Beware that the concept of public service is dying in our educational bureaucracy. The 75 words being crafted to “sell this current bond issue are deceptively vague. They were crafted by district staff and their lawyers. Some members of the school board objected to this lack of clarity. One board member called the wording disingenuous (a polite word for deceptive or dishonest). District staff either made excuses for the
vagueness or ignored board member concerns. If you do not want this school district’s debt burden to become your debt burden, you need to defeat this bond measure — again. People who feel they pay enough property taxes need to turn out for this vote. You can be sure that most of the district employees will vote to rid their bureaucracy of its debt so they can count on future salary and benefit increases. If you remain uninvolved on this issue, this bond measure may pass. If you do not get your friends, neighbors, and community groups involved to protect their property from higher taxes, then the debt that you told the school board not to incur a decade ago will become your debt. Then bureaucrats will be re-

Letter Reasons to vote no on school bond Trustee Rajcic is correct that this bond will allow for district employee compensation increases because the bond will free up general fund money. Trustee Perfect mentions the bond is not intended for employee raises. However, Ms. Perfect omits what Dr. Rajcic states. Assistant Superintendent Ostermann recently stated that district contributions for employee retirement and health care will increase. Bond supporters say this bond is about local control. Local control created the COP situation, and local control proposed to once again shoulder the community with bailing out the district.
Under this bond, residential property taxes will increase by at least $100 if not much more. Also, this year a property tax increase under Proposition 13 will occur. The solution for the district failure is to vote down the bond and allow the state to take over the district. Most likely the state will not do a worse job of operating the district than local control has done. For bond supporters to say that bond money is not allowed for anything else than paying off the COP loan and facility maintenance is similar to President Obama saying you can keep your doctor and the individual health care mandate is not a tax. Vote no on the 2014 school bond. Paul Nichols Ramona

A fast-moving wildfire in the Banner Grade area near Julian leveled two houses and an outbuilding and blackened 217 acres before it was 100 percent contained, Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser said Sunday morning. The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly after 10:30 a.m. last Thursday off state Route 78 and tore through mountainous terrain, forcing the evacuation of about 200 homes in Kentwood-inthe-Pines and Whispering Pines while moving toward Julian, authorities reported. The fire, which burned for about 71 hours, also forced the cancellation of Julian's annual Fourth of July Parade. Chermaine Osuna photo According to Cal Fire's website, 91 fire personnel from four crews fought the fire. Four injuries were reported, and crews used five engines to fight the blaze.
Ramona resident Kim Lasley captures this photo from the Julian High School football field the morning the Banner fire began.

This is the third in a three-part series. After pouring through pictures the night before searching for any evidence Cricket has had cataracts her entire life, Friday came and the appointment with the vet was late in the afternoon. First thing in the morning when it was just barely light enough to see outside, I grabbed my phone because it has a good camera on it and, if
Cricket had a cloudy eye again, I was determined to get a picture of it. The day before she had a cloudy eye in the morning but it wasn’t present later in the day, so I needed proof if it happened again. I went to feed my horses and check on my dear Cricket. All seemed normal at first. Soft nickers and whinnies sounded from the pasture in anticipation of the morning
hay they knew was coming. It was less foggy than the day before and I was hopeful that it was all just a fluke and not real. I dropped hay into buckets and, once all horses started eating, I removed Cricket’s fly mask and held my breath. Dang it! There it was. The cloudy eye, but just the pupil. It seemed smaller than just the day before. I snapped a bunch of pictures so I could show the veterinarians that visited us. I texted the picture to the vet from Thursday and would show the vet that was coming later in the day. After all, on Thursday her eye was cloudy in the early morning, but not later in the day, so it may happen again. I got a call from the vet I texted the picture to, and he was thrilled that I was able to get such a great shot of her eye and send it
Clear eye
to him. He was convinced Cricket’s cataracts had always been there and told me she’s an amazing horse for being able to cope so well during her life with me. I wasn’t sure how I felt except that I have always known Cricket is an amazing horse. Later in the day I went home to meet the second trusted voice in my horse’s life. It’s nice to have more than one vet I trust. Feeling deflated and not quite so rushed, I wasn’t even sure I wanted to know any more than I already did.

Cloudy eye
Upon arriving home, removing the fly mask and haltering Cricket, the same result as the day before — her eye looked fine and not at all like it did earlier in the day. The same procedure ensued as the day prior. Dark place, little light, eye peeker piece of equipment in the vet’s hand and peering into the eyeballs of my horse. Little noises uttered softly from the vet. Both eyes looked at intensely, he stepped back and said, “Cataracts, congenital cataracts. How old is she?” I told him Cricket just turned 13 and he asked,”How long have you had her?” I replied, “Twelve years. I adopted her as a yearling from the BLM and have had her ever since.” He sat on the railing of the fence and said, “Wow. You know she has always had these? She has relied on you for everything. She is incredible and your trust and bond are amazing with this beautiful horse. She really is a pretty horse. Nicely put together. She is lucky to have you.” I said, “I am the lucky one. She is my perfect horse.” He then said he must advise that I not ride her and that I be aware of her limitations. My eyebrow raised in a huge question mark. He smiled. “I will most certainly ride her, work her and treat her as I always have. If she has always had these, this limitation, and I have always ridden her, I certainly am not going to stop now. She isn’t spooky
or silly or dangerous, so why would she become so now? Will the cataracts get worse?” I had to ask. He and the vet the day before didn’t believe they would get worse over time, but we have to keep an eye on them and check on them occasionally now that we are aware they exist. Both vets said surgery to remove them is an option, but it’s my decision. From what I’ve read and learned about congenital cataracts, removing them from a foal is much easier and a horse at Cricket’s age may not fare so well. It’s stressful for any horse, but for my sensitive Mustang I think it would be too much. Besides, it may not improve her sight at all, so it’s not worth the risk in my view. Cricket has limited vision in her right eye, believed to be only light and shadow for the most part. Her left eye has some clear sight in spots from what the vets could tell by looking into her eyes. My perfect horse just became more amazing and incredible to me, knowing of this limitation that exists for her. For her to trust me like she does, to do everything I ask of her and so willingly, for her to give up her wild side and become such a part of my life is so unlikely. I consider myself so blessed that she chose me all those years ago. She chose to become part of my family. I ride her almost every day and we have many more happy trails to come, my pony pal and me.

Neither vehicle hit the tractor, driven by 67-year-old Timothy Cox of Ramona, who stopped and called 911, said Christy. The tractor had lights and was being transported from one job site to another, said Christy, who noted the accident is still under investigation. Lenahan complained of back pain but was not transported to the hospital after being evaluated by paramedics, said Cal Fire Captain Bert Ramirez with the Ramona Fire Department. Both Lenahan and Sanders were wearing seatbelts and no alcohol was involved in the accident, reported Christy.

oach Dan Marshall decided not to resign as head girls basketball coach, but instead asked for and received a one-year leave of absence. Longtime RHS teacher and basketball coach Ken Scheib will become the interim head girls basketball coach for the 201415 season, announced Athletic Director Damon Baldwin. turn as the RHS girls basketball coach in 2015-16 season. Congratulations to coach Scheib and the girls basketball program.” Scheib filled in for Marshall during the 20132014 season and guided the Lady Bulldogs while Marshall took time off due to a family emergency. Under the tutelage of Scheib and Marshall the Lady Dawgs received the No. 1 seed in the CIF playoffs and won a Valley League Championship. Scheib has been running the Bulldog girls summer program and coaching the summer league team. “We have been working out for two hours every morning and are 3-1 in summer league games," Scheib said by phone while taking a break during a 100-mile bike ride with Marshall. "The girls are working hard and having fun and improving. Dan checks in on us often. Dan and I are very similar and nothing much will change. We will run the same offenses and defenses.”

the Athlete of the Year his senior year. While at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., Cole concentrated on basketball and majored in exercise science. He was a four-year starter at Fort Lewis. He played on a conference championship team and competed in back-to-back NCAA Division II national tournaments. Cole and his wife, Adrienne, have two sons, Bronson, 7, and Cannon, 5. In addition to coaching, Cole will teach Ramona's College Access Program, which is similar to AVID. “We wanted an on-campus coach and we had teaching openings. It took a while but we got a really good teacher, coach and person,” said Damon Baldwin, Ramona High's athletic director. The World Cup is like the Olympics, only better. As a person who grew up (many who know me will dispute that assertion) in the Cold War, I view the Olympics as a political platform, starting with Adolf Hitler in the 1936 Olympics. I never heard about the World Cup until I moved to Ramona after I fought in the hottest part of the Cold War. The Olympics were used as a platform to show which political and economic system was superior, and in many ways are still used that way. The Olympics never proved a thing about politics, but did prove that athletes are athletes.
The same is true with soccer in the United States. Every four years the U.S. gets behind our national soccer team. That is what the American sports fan does. And then for four years only the true soccer fans keep up with the most popular sport in the world. The American sports fan will never get behind a team that wins one game, ties one game and loses two games. The American sports fan will never get behind a sport where its best teams score less than the Padres. Our soccer clubs are not on par with the soccer clubs in Europe or Latin America. We have players who compete on those teams but not many. Until we can develop an American coach to coach our team, we will not be a world power in the most popular game in the world. Futbol is the most popular sport in the world because in many countries it is the only sport played. It is a great sport because it can be played on a perfectly groomed pitch, a dirt road, a vacant lot or a mine field. It takes one ball. The players in most of the soccer games in the world don’t wear or own shoes. The World Cup is great for the U.S. We are a country of immigrants and immigrants come from countries See TIMEOUT on page B18

Cheers for the World Cup
The World Cup is different. It is about futbol. The super powers in the Cold War spent millions of dollars developing Olympic athletes. In most cases more money was spent on one Olympic team than the total gross national product of most of the 32 countries that reach the World Cup. In the Olympic games, countries that do not have running water or electricity for most of its citizens are never listed in the medals counts. In the World Cup those same countries often beat the nations with nuclear weapons. Go figure. In the Olympics it is about politics and spending priorities. In the World Cup it is about futbol. I vote for the World Cup. Several sportswriters and television commentators have stated that the United States is finally embracing futbol (soccer) as a major sport. I disagree. Futbol is like the Olympics. It is only notable once every four years. In Olympic years, sports like swimming, gymnastics, ribbon twirling in a swimming pool, team handball, luge racing, skiing with a rifle, kayaking and ice dancing are given air time on international television. And then four years we see or hear little about them. There is no gymnastics channel or swimming channel or track channel on any cable or dish provider.

The second game was against Arsenal FC San Diego Elite and ended in a 0-0 tie. On June 29, the Intra team headed to Chula Vista and played Aztecs FC Garcia and won that match 4-0. Intra BU16 placed second in its bracket and advanced to finals at Pershing Middle School in San Diego. The pre-game started with a World Cupstyle entrance with the referees and both teams walking onto the field side by side.

The Ramona boys faced Aztecs FC Rodriguez but lost by 1-4. Coach Gabriel Ocampo said the team had a few players out with injuries and an undeserved
red card from the morning game. The BU16 team was scheduled to play in the Crusaders Cup tournament July 5 and 6 in San Diego.

that play soccer. When the U.S. was not playing, I found myself rooting for Italy and Mexico. I love the way Mexico plays soccer. I became a big fan of the Mexican Tommy Lasorda — Miguel Herrera. The Mexican coach didn’t hide his emotions or his passion for the game or his players. He celebrated every great play and showed his emotion when calls or plays went the other teams’ way. He is a true ambassador of the game. In the U.S., young athletes have too many options. Americans follow the money and in the states, the money is not on the pitch, but on the field, in the gym and on the diamonds. The World Cup, however, is great, and every four years Americans will get behind their country's team. That is a good thing.

"Get Fit at the Library with USA Jump Stars" is the July 24 program at Ramona Library, 1275 Main St., that begins at 1 p.m. Attendees can watch and participate in demonstrations of the exercise classes available at the library and then join the USA Jump Stars competition jump rope team at 2 p.m. to learn some fancy jumping. Dozens of children packed the Ramona Library Community Room last week to meet Simon the Safety Bloodhound Puppet and watch a "Don't Run Around, Stay Found" presentation. The program was conducted by sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) K-9 Team Leader Pam Medhurst. She and Simon told children what to do if they got lost or were approached by a stranger. Children got to spend time with Search and Rescue dogs Wishbone, a beagle, and Haley, a labrador retriever, and received free "Don't Run Around, Stay Found" water bottles and Search and

tain on the volleyball team. He became interested in serving the country while a Boy Scout when one of the troop's service projects was placing American Flags on the graves of Veterans. Sapper will be the first member in his family to serve in the military. He chose to attend the Air Force Academy because, “It is a fantastic opportunity to serve my country, get an education and have a guaranteed job.” The teacher who inspired him the most at RHS was “Mr. Ola Knutsson because of his devotion to his work.” Lawler earned a 4.23 grade point average and is an Eagle Scout. He lettered in football, basketball, volleyball and tennis and played water polo at RHS. He was All League and a team captain in basketball as a junior. Lawler has been interested in the military most of his life and thinks everyone should serve in the military. His uncle served in the Air Force and his grandfather served in the Army. Lawler said he chose USAFA because “It is my way of serving in the military with a college education.” He plans on playing football at USAFA. Glaudini is a 4.14 student who swims and has shown he can swim well. He has earned All League, All CIF and All American honors in swimming. Now he wants to fly. He became interested in USAFA his junior year.

“Flying is something I always wanted to do and the opportunities at the academy are almost limitless," he said. Glaudini's grandfather was a lieutenant commander in the Navy. Kerchner is a 3.8 student who was a member of FUSION. He lettered in football and served as captain. He was All Palomar League his junior and senior years, the Palomar League Defensive Player of the Year, All CIF, Team MVP and a two-time UT All Academic Award winner. He also wrestled and ran track. Kerchner is what's called a “military brat” and that is not a negative term. He has been interested in the military throughout his life. His father, Scott, is a pilot and retired colonel in the United States Marines. His grandfather also served. As to why he chose the Naval Academy, he said, “I believe there is not a better place to be.” Kerchner plans to play football at the Naval Academy. His favorite subject is physics and Robin Brainard and Julie Bridgewater were his most inspirational teachers at RHS. Good grades in tough classes, playing sports — in most cases multiple sports, recording achievements on the field or in the pool and in the classroom, and leading by example are attributes that these four RHS grads share on their way to serving their country.

VERDE DR, RAMONA, CA 92065 Assessor’s Parcel No.: 288-57207-00 NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-13-561004-CL . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagee’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for
this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only.
