Ramona TEA'd drew its largest crowd ever for its 50th public forum when Sheriff Joe Arpaio from Arizona's Maricopa County came to speak on Saturday. Darrell Beck, Ramona Tea'd member, said about 460 people came to hear Arpaio, known as "America's toughest sheriff." A couple hundred people had to be turned away, he said. The 82-year-old sheriff, who has become a controversial fi gure for his stance on crime and illegal immigration, has been elected six times for fouryear terms and said he is planning to run again in 2016. A group of about 25 protesters also showed up outside Ramona Mainstage, where the forum was held. Deputies from
the San Diego County Sheriff's Department parked their vehicles in the street and stood nearby in case any problems occurred. "Racists, bigots, go away," a female protester shouted into a megaphone. She held a sign that said "Workers of Unite and Fight, International Socialist Organization." Another protester held a sign that said "Deport racists, not children." Among locations the protesters came from were Escondido, San Diego and "America." On the other side of the sidewalk, residents from Ramona, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Julian, Fallbrook, Tierrasanta, Carlsbad and other local towns stood in a line that stretched down the street. One deputy said there were a couple of scuffles with the protesters but

By KAREN BRAINARD A brief special meeting of the Ramona Municipal Water District Board on Monday resulted in a heated exchange between Director Joe Zenovic and the district's legal counsel, who announced he will be submitting his resignation. While Zenovic claimed negligence on an action by legal counsel, James Gilpin, a partner with Best Best & Krieger, said he was resigning "because there's a lot of shenanigans that I can't support." Darrell Beck, board president, had called the special meeting to reconsider a vote taken at the

Gilpin said that, because of privacy rights, the employee issues would have to be discussed in a closed session. "This is a rant by a director, —" said Zenovic. "Let's not go there," Beck cautioned. "— that's making a personal attack against two staff employees," Zenovic continued. "There's no reason to go to closed session over it." with humorous lines. Illegal immigration was a topic foremost on many people's minds with the recent infl ux of 57,000 Central Americans, most of them children, coming across the U.S.-Mexico border. Arpaio

said someone at the White House should have known about the surge in illegal immigrants. "Some could be carrying bombs. Some could be terrorists," he said. When he asked if anyone was from Murrieta, a group of about 25 raised their hands and drew cheers. Arpaio thanked them for standing up against the federal government's plan to transfer some of the undocumented immigrants to Murrieta, and for reviving the illegal immigration issue. "You are the heroes of our country right now because you brought the problem back into the fold," he said. The sheriff said President Obama invited three Central American presidents to the White House to talk about the infl ux of their citizens, but he questioned why Obama did not invite Mexico's president and why Mexico doesn't stop the illegals from crossing the border into the U.S. "Mexico is the biggest problem," he said. "No one talks about Mexico." Arpaio said the U.S. should send border patrol or military to work with the Mexican Army, as he did. "Why can't we work operational and work on the other side and stop the drugs before they come across... very simple," he said to applause. Arpaio talked about the success of his tent city, which he launched in 1993 for convicted inmates. The compound has 2,000 convicted men and women. Arpaio said he has offered to help set up a tent city in California to alleviate prison overcrowding. He puts U.S. fl ags in jail cells and, if anyone messes with the flag, they go on bread and water. "Pretty good. We save some money," he quipped. Two months ago, he said he took meat out of the meals and the inmates are now vegetarians. Arpaio also addressed his investigation into what he said was a fake, forged document of Obama's birth certifi cate, and said he asked for a real copy of the
birth certificate, which he never received. "You've got to do what's right," he said. "I do have a heart, believe it or not. I'm only as good as the people that support me." On behalf of Ramona TEA'd, Jim Fontana presented Arpaio with a copy of the book "Images of America Ramona" by Richard Carrico.

available at the district offi ce before the July 22 meeting. Zenovic said he had picked up the document so he was familiar with the matter. Foote's motion to schedule a closed session was seconded by Schildhouse and approved 3-1, with Zenovic dissenting. That vote was addressed at Monday's meeting with Foote making a motion for reconsideration, and it was approved 3-1 with Schildhouse opposed. Zenovic then asked Gilpin why he had redacted the two July 22 agenda items. Gilpin said they involved privacy matters. "The two items listed weren't appropriate for public session so they were redacted," he explained. "I think that's negligent on legal counsel's part," responded Zenovic. He said the redacted items were damaging to the two stated individuals, as well as staff and the district. Although he said the names and positions could be blackedout, the other information should have been made public. "I can't tell you how angry I am that this hap

"And you have a habit directing negligent claims at legal counsel," Gilpin said to Zenovic. Gilpin said he would make his resignation effective at the conclusion of the meeting. Zenovic moved that the board not schedule a closed session on the emloyee matters. It was approved 3-1 with Schildhouse opposed. Schildhouse told the Sentinel he would like to know how much the spe-

cial meeting cost the district. Directors are paid $100 per board meeting that they attend. Schildhouse said the board and staff try to block items that he wants on the agenda. Board members and Barnum have told him he must write his own agenda memos and follow a particular format, but, he said, that is not required in the district's board policy. Requiring that agenda memo format was one of the draft revisions to the district's legislative code approved by the board July 22 by a 3-1 vote with Schildhouse opposed as he had issues with other revisions. Among Schildhouse's other agenda item requests July 22 that could not garner enough support for board discussion were: re-evaluation of the $900 staff costs for the June 23 evening public budget presentation, amending the district code to require only one board meeting a month, changing the meeting time to 4:30 p.m. or later, and requiring that all meeting and communication between any board and staff members be reported at the following board meeting.

Unicorn Books and Gifts hosts award-winning cartoonist By MARTA ZARRELLA “We called the publisher and ordered the last books they had in stock for Steve Breen. When we run out, that’s it,” said Stacy Bart of Unicorn Books and Gifts.
The bookstore hosted a book signing for San Diego Union-Tribune political cartoonist Steve Breen last Wednesday at 7 p.m. “My business partner Julia (Dammeir) read that he was doing book signings so she reached out

and invited him to Ramona," said Bart. "His reply was 'Unicorn Books wants my Unicorn book? How could I not?'” The book is titled "Unicorn Executions and Other Crazy Stuff My Kids Make Me Draw." Breen earned two Pulitzer prizes, one in 1998 and one in 2009, for his political cartoons. This book is his fi fth and is under consideration by Universal Studios as a possible feature. Breen, the father of six children — four boys and two girls ages 4 months to 15 years — said they are the inspiration for the books. "'Saturday Night Live' writer Simon Rich and 'We’re the Millers' (2013) and 'Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story' (2004) director Rawson Thurber are attached to the project," said Breen. No stranger to success, Breen is also the creator of the comic strip Grand Avenue, a syndicated
comic strip that runs in approximately 150 newspapers. About 15 talked with Breen at the book signing. Colleen Baker, librarian at the Julian branch of the San Diego County library, came from "up the hill" in Julian. Curtis Ohl, a psychology professor at National University and longtime fan of Breen, drove "up the hill" from Escondido to meet the award-winning cartoonist. Breen was in Ramona recently when some of his children attended a camp at Blue Sky Ranch. He said he likes Ramona, though he isn’t a regular visitor. He enjoys the drive and all of the nature to be found in the town. “I don’t always agree with his ideas,” said Ohl, “but one thing about Steve, he is fair.” Ohl uses Breen’s cartoons as discussion starters in his classes at National University. He said

the artwork lends itself to lively discussion. Another celebrity who incites conversation in his classroom is Weird Al Yankovick. Breen began drawing cartoons for his friends when he was a boy. The remodeling will also include eliminating the self check-out stations that have had problems and created frustrations for customers, he said, and putting in four express lanes. Starbucks will remain, the store director said. "It does not affect pricing," Swartwood said of the remodeling project's cost. Pricing is set geographically by the corporate office, he noted. Miniature books reap big awards By KAREN BRAINARD
A table of youth bridge summer campers concentrate with their adult teachers. Clockwise from top left are Dorris Hendrickson, Daniel Werhanowicz, Berlin Kiddoo, Hunter Mahaffey, Lenore Sjoberg, Savannah Kiddoo, Madison Mahaffey and Nathan Kiddoo.
Adults share love of bridge at Town Hall summer camp Investor Warren Buffet and Microsoft founder Bill Gates have more in common than business. They both see the value of teaching bridge to children. With so many teachers in the Town Hall Bridge Club, "the Bill Gates-Warren Buffet idea to introduce bridge into the schools has long had appeal, so much so we decided to do it ourselves," said Mary Ann Houston, founder of the Ramona Town Hall Bridge Club. Every Tuesday this sumer, students as young as age 9 are learning to play bridge in historic Town Hall, 729 Main St. It's called Youth Bridge Summer Camp, and it starts with pizza at 1 p.m. The camp is free. "Under the careful and caring tutelage of Lenore
Sjoberg, a group of motivated youngsters gathers at the Town Hall...eager for camaraderie and pizza — and, oh yes, lessons in the fine art of bridge," noted Houston. Bridge is more than just a card game, she said. "It's a cerebral sport. Bridge teaches logic, reasoning, quick thinking, patience, concentration and partnership skills." It's a game for a lifetime and can be enjoyed by young and old, male and female, weak and strong, Houston added. "It crosses all barriers." Ramona Town Hall Bridge Club pays for the children's American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) membership fees. This allows the youngsters to play tournament games and

accumulate ACBL Masterpoints. Once the youngsters complete their lesson in basic principals of bridge, they play a beginners session with their peers. While the best age to start playing bridge is 11, the youth group has players as young as 9, said Houston, adding players are accepted through high school. "Youth bridge lessons are cropping up all over the country," she noted. Once school starts on Aug. 25, Houston and other Town Hall Bridge Club members hope to continue the youth group. Anyone interested in learning more about youth bridge may contact Houston at 760-789-1132. —Maureen Robertson
Eileen Cummings has displayed portions of her miniature book collection at the San Diego County Fair in past years but it was her assortment of teddy bear-themed books that won her Best of Show and Best of Division for Home and Hobby this year. "This is like winning the gold medal at the Olympics," the enthusiastic Ramona resident said. "I reached the ultimate goal." Cummings, 62, has been collecting miniature books — under three inches — since she was 12 years old. "Cracker Jack came out with a series of books," she said, referring to the 1960s. "I have almost the whole set of Cracker Jack books." Cummings would love to see young people be-
come interested in collecting miniature books. "If I could encourage 1 percent, I would die a happy person," she said. Producing the books is becoming a lost art, Cummings noted. "There's still people out there that do it," she said, explaining that it takes special types of printing, and even the binding is considered an art. She last counted about 5,600 miniature books in her collection. While she has sold some over the years, she still makes purchases if she finds a good deal. Her collection covers a vast array of themes and spans centuries. She has a miniature Assyrian tablet from 2500 B.C., sold some books from the 1600s, and last year displayed at the fair a children's book collection dating from the 1700s to early 1900s.

"Ninety-nine percent of them are readable," she said of her tiny books. She also has miniature collections of Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, dictionaries and Bibles. The value of the books, ranging from $5 to $2,000, has never decreased, she said. She is a member of the Miniature Book Society, which has about 400 members nationwide and meets once a year in different states. Cummings humorously calls her passion for miniature book collecting an addiction and said being a collector is in her genes. "To me, a person without a collection is a person without a personality," she said.

District asks for voluntary water cutbacks, may seek more As state and regional agencies address the ongoing drought and the need to conserve water, Ramona Municipal Water District is asking customers to voluntarily cut back on water use and may consider going further at its Aug. 12 meeting. The district last Tuesday implemented its Drought Response Level 1, a voluntary drought watch that is at the discretion of the district's general manager, David Barnum. "We're asking our customers to do a variety of things that are compliant with the State Water Resource Control Board requests," Barnum told the water board at its July 22 meeting. Two days later Barnum and other members of the regional San Diego County Water Authority, which
supplies water to the Ramona district, called for stronger conservation measures, unanimously activating the next stage of the region's drought response plan and declaring a Drought Alert condition. Barnum serves as the Ramona district's representative on the county water authority board. Deepening drought conditions and new directives from the state prompted the change, said water authority officials. Stronger conservation measures will help the county keep as much water as possible in storage for next year and comply with emergency water conservation mandates approved by the state Water Resources Control Board July 15, according to the water authority.
The statewide emergency regulations focused on ornamental landscaping and turf. The water authority does not expect cutbacks in imported water supplies this year that would trigger mandatory supply cutbacks by member agencies. Reductions could hap-

"Water supply challenges statewide are serious," Thomas Wornham, water authority board chairman said. "...We don't know how much rain and snow we will get this winter. The only thing we can collectively control is how much water each of us uses. Every home, business and public agency should assess its water use and take additional steps to conserve to better prepare for a possible fourth consecutive dry year." San Diego County has spent money on water storage the past several years, most recently by increasing storage capacity in San Vicente Dam, said Barnum. According to the state water board, more water is generally used outdoors, rather than indoors, for lawns and landscaping.

"Those are all up and coming 4-H'ers and it's a good indication of the junior fair's future." Education is going through a transition By JOHN RAJCIC Someone said that to understand “communications,” particularly at a school board meeting, one should listen to what is not said. This article does some reminiscing, in that the past does define the present. "The United States routinely spends more tax dollars per high school athlete than per high school math student — unlike most countries world wide. And we wonder why we lag in international education rankings?" By Amanda Ripley, The Atlantic, 9-18-2013. I will merely scatter some thoughts on sports and allied miscellany. My wife, Connie, and I some time ago came back from my 65th high school reunion. There was talk about our favorite teachers. The football guys were talking about the 3-point loss in the City Championship football game. The conversation was mostly about the positive impact the team had upon them and some talk about the physical pain that endures from a particular game. There was much talk about friends no longer with us. One person regretted that he played football. A retired corporate executive said the competitive nature of football helped him succeed in business. You have to improve your product or services to maintain market share and grow the company. This in a sense is true with football. You cannot, as a rule, keep using the same old plays, because the competition knows your moves. Using an old play on a particular occasion, however, may be a valuable surprise move. It could be said that in football, deception is as important as it is in warfare. Coaches and leaders should See GUEST COMMENTARY, page B8
Report inflates number of protesters On Saturday I went to hear Joe Arpaio speak at the Mainstage Theater in Ramona where I live and was surprised to see a little over a dozen protesters outside, blocking the sidewalk to the west. I didn't think I was going to get in as the line for entry on the other side was past where the old post office used to be and I knew the theater has limited capacity. I got lucky and got in. By the time I approached the entrance, the protesters numbers had swelled to maybe 20 — and that's being generous. OK, I'll give 'em an even two dozen to be charitable. The next day (Sunday) on one of the television station websites there is this headline along with accompanying video and comments from the "reporter" that said: "Hundreds show up in Ramona to protest Sheriff Arpaio." The usual tight camera angles to accentuate the numbers and shots of thinly strung out marchers accompanied the commentary. Now unless hundreds showed up after I entered the theater — remember that I was near the end of the line — I would have to say that report is full of it. The hundreds that DID show up were in line to hear Sheriff Joe speak. The so called "free speech" zone that had been set up in the parking lot was devoid of people. The good sheriff did go out to attempt to speak to the protesters just before he spoke, but by that time they had disappeared.
This was from one of his staff. I was able to get a spot near the front where they all were, got even luckier, I guess. Maybe I should have bought a Lottery ticket. I guess the protesters, once their audience (the people in line and TV cameras) were inside the theater, left. Such is the dedication to their cause. No attempt at reasonable discourse on their part, just the usual megaphone with chanted slogans and shouts. I am sure they all patted themselves on the back and went home. The television report is complicit in stroking the egos of the protesters with their inflated numbers though. I would have liked to have talked to them but was more interested in hearing Sheriff Joe. I would have sought to ascertain the protesters level of commitment to the cause, if they would personally take in these new "immigrants" and support them in all manner, or if they just wanted to use other people's money to do it. From the looks of them I would have to say the protesters appeared to be mainly students with a radical professor or organizer thrown in for good measure and could barely support themselves, let alone someone else. In contrast, those waiting in line for entry were of the working folks or retired that keep this country going. I telephoned the station and called them out on their "fair and balanced" reporting. The person I talked to said they would take care of it. They may be able to fix the head-
line, maybe not the audio. Bill Reynolds Ramona Medical personnel saved my life This letter is written to thank all the medical personnel who saved my life. On June 18 my daughter called 911 to report my left arm no longer would obey my commands. Within minutes the EMTs and paramedics were on hand and transported me to Pomerado Hospital where it was determined I needed cardiac surgery to repair a torn aorta. I was flown via helicopter to Palomar Medical Center where Dr. Jeffery Rosenburg, M.D. F.A.C.S made the repairs during a 12 hour procedure. I will always be grateful to him, his staff and the rehab crew who put me back on my feet. Once again, this is evidence why people from all over the world seek medical care here in the USA. Children chatted with deputies from the Ramona station, learning what they do to keep people safe, used the radio and tried out some of the deputies' gear. They also received certificates and goody bags with sheriff's department souvenirs.

Angelica Klawiter advanced from D-1 certifi cation to D-2 at a testing held at the Rider’s Field in Fallbrook, reports Ramona Vicente Pony Club. Angelica, 13, is the daughter of Jeff and Cathy Klawiter of Ramona. She joined Ramona Vicente Pony Club in 2013. To earn the certification, Angelica passed an examination that tested her horsemanship skills and equine knowledge. Each certifi cation level is more diffi cult than the preceding one
and requires club members to learn more about horses and their care and to become increasingly accomplished riders and teachers to younger members, noted a statement from United States Pony Clubs, Inc. (Pony Club). The top certifi cation level is A and is reached by fewer than one in 300. Pony Club was founded in 1954 as a nonprofi t national youth organization to teach riding and horsemanship through a formal educational program. There are approximately 10,000 Pony Club

read Sun Tzu's “The Art of Warfare.” You have to be creative and innovate to win as Ramona's coaches do. I complimented the coaches many times for their obvious good work with students. A professional football player will tell you there is more to life than football. Football is not the alpha and omega. There Is much more to education than football. Ninety percent of students will not be involved in football. Let's assume no one ever heard of football. We are the school board. Would we include football in our curriculum as we know it ? The Greeks' academy was next to their gymnasium. We owe a lot to the Greeks in both academics and sports. In the Army, a sergeant would give physical training and exercise to a entire company. Speaking of cost effectiveness! I subbed in a neighboring district and it seemed not uncommon for a physical education teacher to roll out a ball and watch the activity. During our high school open house, I visited a teacher who had physical education classes and also taught weight training. I was impressed with the program; so were the few parents in attendance. Last time we were in Croatia, a third or fourth cousin was wearing a Long Beach High School water polo shirt. Croatians are known for their water polo skills, I asked, "Where did you get that shirt?" He was being recruited as a high school foreign exchange student to play water polo. Long Beach High School is a CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) champ in water polo. When the soon-to-be superintendent of the Winnetka, Ill., schools was studying for his doctorate at USC, a question was asked about CIF. He said, “Raj, what is CIF?” I explained that it referred to the California Interscholastic Federation. Immediately he assumed it was an academic organization. He was somewhat taken back when I explained it had to do with high school

competitive sports. I do not know of an academic organization that has the power of CIF. It was not unusual in the 1950s and '60s to find that many superintendents were former coaches. It made sense. Coaches are great organizers and place talent in the appropriate place. I e-mailed a friend and we discussed the many challenges that confront Ramona: Common Core, declining enrollment, qualified budget, no contingency plans, excess student capacity, facilities that are in disrepair, aged transportation fleet, smothering debt, finances, unsatisfactory API scores and much more. He was a superintendent in a rather large California school district and also had a very successful business career. The friend's letter in part follows: “Don't get me wrong, I love sports and played football in high school. But after entering the school business I came to realize how expensive and time consuming sports are in the high school scene. I live in a town of less than 50,000 in central Texas and on Friday night 8,000 folks fill the stadium with nine color coordinated coaches on the sidelines to watch a game in the shadow of a giant Jumbotron scoreboard with 4 miked-up officials supervising the spectacle. In many ways a great, fun and spiritfilled event but one must ask at what academic cost? If all that money, time, energy and enthusiasm went into the academic program, I am convinced our kids would be better served. Texans love their high school football and I'm certain that the community fathers would find a way to fund a fantastic community program and have fabulous Saturday games for the town's gifted athletes. The 90 percent of the non-varsity kids could engage in less expensive intramural contests as part of their PE program. This would allow a much greater percentage of the school population to benefit from the valuable lessons in leadership, discipline and grace in winning and losing that sports teaches so well. Hey then we could have a Friday pep rally for the debate team!" The tail "football" should not wag the "dog" the academic program. John Rajcic is not arguing against the great work of coaches or abandoning football. It is merely a discussion of contemporary reality. All should read Gregg Easterbrook's book, “The King of Sports: Football's impact on America.” Gregg quotes Tony Dungy, “Football is America's sport because it is aggressive, and Americans are aggressive people.” Easterbrook made a comment by a well-known coach: “Football does not build character, it reveals it.” This set me back a bit. At my age touch football is even on the margin, golf is not. This brings back a quote of Arnold Palmer that goes something like this: “Before I make a business deal with someone , I take them out for a round of golf. Golf reveals their real character.” I have found this so true in golf. Even fans reveal their character at the ball park. If you let people think they are thinking, they will love you, but if you really make them think, they will hate you. For the record, the word “parasite” is not in my vocabulary. Sycophant is! I am merely arguing to keep our Great Republic more competitive with the rest of the world without embracing the culture of other nations. We have a great land where freedom rings and we must innovate and get much more creative on how we deliver educational services with the limited funds we have available.
Let's not scuttle music programs and the other arts in the process. It seems the state is more concerned with imposing values upon our children than teaching them how to read, write and compute. The emphasis is on equality of outcomes. God did not intend us all to be equal. As an aside, I have nothing but praise for the volunteer work of the PTA and I am an agnostic about a lot of things in education but not the value of an effective teacher. Ramona has many effective teachers. P.S. Change is inevitable. Those that do not like change will like irrelevance even less. Significant change will invariably produce conflict amongst those whose vested interests are threatened. What is required is a structuring of the system to tolerate sustained conflict that accompanies discussion, review, questioning and suggesting alternative courses of action. Conflict produces social disorganization, stimulating relationships and needed change. Diversity rather than uniformity is needed in procedures. Educators must realize that there is hardly a teaching task that cannot be accomplished in a multitude of ways — and many of the capabilities today have been entirely impossible over most of the span of educational history. Education is going through a transition never seen since Socrates and it has absolutely nothing to do with Common Core. It is two finger arithmetic that brings about digital learning. Creativity and innovation must be encouraged to surface. None of these words detract from the fact that our public education system has served my family, my grandchildren and a myriad of other families and their children admirably. This does not mean the status quo is sufficient to remain competitive with the other nations. Improvements are needed in many areas. Yes, I believe in God. Further, I believe that every human life has equal value. With additional information, I change my mind. “Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” Just some random notions in finally closing. The clash of ideas is the sound of freedom. Cemeteries are filled with indispensable people. I value an animated discussion full of life, action, spirit and vigor, which a stove-pipe organization that is risk averse, shuns criticism and unable to handle conflict precludes. Nothing is more obstinate than a fashionable consensus, be it Common Core or the Local Control Funding Formula. I would encourage others to give their view even if it ruffles feathers. The government can not give to anybody anything that the government does not take from somebody else. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift from God, which is why we call it the present. I will not sacrifice my opinions and values solely for the opinions of others. I will stand for what I believe is right even if I stand alone. I value your opinion even though I may disagree. If you are not interested in politics, that does not mean that politics is not interested in you. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right. Words that come from the heart go to the heart. John Rajcic, a Ramona school board member, stresses that this is his opinion as an individual and he is not representing the board.

Gallery hosts reception for contemporary artists The Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery will host a reception for contemporary artists Joylene Reddy and Hal Fleener in the Discovery Room on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. The artwork will be featured through September. Reddy, a Ramona resident, began painting in acrylics three years ago. Her work is abstract and she ďŹ nds her inspiration in images from everyday life. Her family is originally from India but she moved to the Fiji Islands as a young girl. She came to the United States at 19 years of age to work as a nanny and has been here for the past 13 years. Fleener, who digitally enhances his photography in Photoshop, has worked as a photographer since 1980,
beginning as a school portrait photographer and eventually branching out to wedding photography. In 1996, he began using Photoshop to edit his photography and soon realized the potential for artistically manipulating his images, bending the images to look like something completely different from the original image. "We would love for you to join us for the reception at the gallery," said Aletha McKenzie, gallery artist. "We will be having sweet and savory refreshments,
served with assorted beverages. Come and say 'hi' to both artists who both just recently moved up the hill from Poway." The gallery is at 845 Main St. In other art news, the gallery invites artists to enter its annual juried art show set for October. Lela Harty, an art teacher in San Diego since 1976, will judge the show. To enter artwork in the October show, visit the gallery or call 760-789-3682 to request an entry form.
AMCAL drops plans for affordable housing AMCAL has withdrawn its plans to build a 60-unit affordable workforce housing complex on Robertson Street, behind Kmart, according to the county.
The project was endorsed by the Ramona Community Planning Group in July 2013, but was opposed by some of the residents who live in that area.

"Ramona in general has the best pool players in San Diego," said Henry Preciado, who served as captain of the team, dubbed "92065." Competing on the team with Preciado were Ramonans Chad Bennett, Bill Mellecker, Nick Iorio, Eric Whitford and Jess Libsack. "Taking part in the BCA nationals was one of the best experiences I have ever had and I think as a
tough tournament. "The best players from all around the United States, from Alaska all the way to California, even Canada took part," he said. They never put their head down. They represented Ramona with honor," the team captain said. It was the first time the six players competed as a team at the BCA national championships. said Jess Libsack. "It was an honor to be chosen to play with this great team against the best players from all over the country." Mellecker thanked his wife, Joanna, as the championships also became an anniversary trip for the two. He found the competition to be a great experience. "Looking forward to going back again next year," he said. The team was sponsored by Premier Shape, On Cue Billiards, Country Wine & Spirits, Cues Billiards, Turkey Inn, Quality Billiards, Cheers of Ramona, Molly Malone's, Olhausen Online, Pro Pool Academy, and The Road Player.

I am on call 24 hours. We have 35 stalls in our foaling barn. If there is a problem at any time I am on call. But I love every minute of it, said Allen. All seven Ramona Intra soccer teams participated in the Dave Shelton Memorial Tournament July 19 and 20, playing a variety of club teams from San Diego and Orange counties. Held at Frances Ryan Park in Escondido, the Dave Shelton event was the fi rst tournament of the season for many of the teams, and for a few it was their first tournament as a new team. The teams and their records from the tournament are: Boys Under 10, 1 win (6-2), 1 tie (0-0) and 1 loss (3-4). Boys Under 11, 1 tie (00) and 2 losses (0-7) (2-1). Girls Under 11, 3 losses (0-3) (0-6) (2-1). Boys Under 13, 3 losses (1-4) (0-2) (1-3). Boys Under 14, 2 wins (10) (1-0) and 1 loss (0-3). Boys Under 16, 1 win (42) and 2 losses (1-2) (1-2). Girls Under 16, 1 win (40) and 2 losses (1-2) (0-4). Some Ramona soccer coaches said the tournament was the first time they could remember that all active Intra teams played in the same event at the same location. By BILL TAMBURRINO As 1986 and 87 All Avocado League running back for Ramona High School and a varsity track team member, Mike Allen loved to run, but today he is more interested in the running of horses. Allen is ranch manager at Tommy Town Thoroughbred Farm in Santa Ynez and was recently at the Del Mar Racetrack with the farm's horses. After graduating from RHS in 1988, Allen went on to play at San Diego Mesa College and then fi nished his college career at Bethany College in Kansas. Allen's dad, Willie, ran a ranch in Warner Springs so his son was familiar with horse ranches and farms. In 1994, when Golden Eagle Farm was winning multiple Eclipse Awards and John Mabee was the premier owner/ breeder in North America, Allen went there to work. He worked hard and learned the business from the top to literally the bottom, as he also cleaned stalls. In 2000 Tom and Debi Stull started a 165-acre farm in Santa Ynez and

then purchased 200 adjoining acres. They named their business Tommy Town Thoroughbred Farm and Allen joined their team in 2001. As ranch manager, Allen is involved in breeding, foaling and training. “I used to be involved in hauling our horses to the tracks but we no longer ship our own horses, he said. Allen also has to keep tabs on Tommy Town horses that are racing around the country. It is not a nine-to-five job. “During foaling season

Old Topper. He is cool and fun to be around and he gets mares in foal.” “Besides the California circuit, our horses race in New Mexico, West Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania," said Tommy Stull. "We love to keep our horses in California because the purses are bigger and the tracks are the best. If a horse does well enough out of state we like to bring him back to California.” With Golden Gate, Santa Rosa, Alameda, Ferndale, Fresno, San Joaquin, Cal Expo, Pleasanton, Sacramento, Santa Anita, Los Alamitos, Fairplex and Del Mar all having thoroughbred racing, California is a gold mine. That gold mine keeps Allen and Stull busy. Without hesitation, Allen said Del Mar is his favorite track. Sitting near the winners circle at Del Mar, in the Tommy Town box, he said, "I’m from here. It is home and it is the most beautiful track in the best location in the world.” Allen’s sons, Costin and Tucker, often accompany him when he has to take a road trip in the summer. His wife, Lisa, is also in the breeding business but specializes in labrador retrievers, not thoroughbreds. Even though Allen spends a lot of time at race tracks he is not a big gambler. “I’ll place a bet on our horses but I don’t bet on every race,” he said. In thoroughbred racing it is legal to bet on one's own horse. Tommy Town Thoroughbred Farm's horse, Mike's Lion, came in third in the fourth race at Del Mar last Friday.

FIRE REPORTS

A trash truck hits an oak tree branch leaning over the northbound lane of Mussey Grade Road south of Dos Picos Park Road Friday, July 18.
Trash truck hits leaning tree branch, triggers Mussey Grade Road closure A trash truck collided with a large oak tree branch leaning over Mussey Grade Road, causing the roadway to be covered with branches and limbs and impassable until the county cleared it on Friday, July 18. The collision occurred about 2:30 p.m. just past Dos Picos Park Road. JoBeth Lytle, road supervisor for the county's Ramona road station, estimated it would take about four hours to clear the road for traffic. Senior volunteers from the sheriff's Ramona sta-
tion conducted traffic control at Mussey Grade and Dos Picos Park roads. The trash truck driver, who is in his 40s and is from National City, had a three-inch laceration on his forehead and another laceration on the back of his head and was transported to Pomerado Hospital, said California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Kattke. According to the CHP offi cer , the driver had made a left turn from a driveway onto Mussey Grade and was traveling 7 mph and "said he heard
a crack and his truck stopped immediately." Kattke estimated the tree to be about four feet in diameter. Ramona Community Planning Group at its June meeting discussed an oak tree that was leaning over the travel lane on Mussey Grade Road, south of Dos Picos Park Road. Scotty Ensign, planning group vice chair, said trash trucks were clipping the side of the tree. Options discussed were tree removal, road improvements or realignment, and cautionary signage.

Film focuses on unvaccinated children, adults A movie called “Invisible Threat” focuses on the dangers that unvaccinated children and adults could pose to those around them. Health care leaders who viewed it at the county health services complex say they want to spread the word about the importance of vaccines. While they believe vaccines prevent disease and save lives, they are aware that some parents choose to delay or decline vaccinations for their children. The 40-minute documentary, created
by high school students in San Diego County, addresses the sometimes controversial issue of vaccines. The student fi lmmakers interviewed vaccine and autism experts who talked about the benefi ts of vaccinations and the risks of not vaccinating. They also interviewed a naturopath who was opposed to using vaccines. For more information about vaccines, call the County Health and Human Services Agency Immunization Branch at 866-358-2966, or visit www.sdiz.org.

IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. Trustor: John M Clayton Duly Appointed Trustee: Western Progressive, LLC Recorded 09/25/2007 as Instrument No. 2007-0625308 in book —-, page—- and of Official Records in the office of the Recorder of San Diego County, California, Date of Sale: 08/25/2014 at 10:30 AM at the ENTRANCE TO THE EAST COUNTY REGIONAL CENTER BY THE STATUE, 250 E. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering
bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-9608299 or visit this Internet Web site http://altisource.com/resware/ TrusteeServicesSearch.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2013-03811-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: July 17, 2014. Western Progressive, LLC, LLC, as Trustee, C/o 30 Corporate Park, Suite 450, Irvine, CA 92606. San Diego teen dies after hiking Three Sisters With summer temperatures rising and the death last week of a teenage hiker who suffered from heat-related physical distress, the county reminds residents to take precautions when planning to enjoy the area's mountains or other backcountry attractions. On Tuesday, July 22, an 18-year-old female hiker, Yasmen Vidales of San Diego, died at Grossmont Hospital after she was airlifted out of an area on the Three Sisters Falls trail in Julian, reported San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Vidales and a friend ran out of water while hiking, and she became unresponsive when they returned to the car area on Boulder Creek Road, the county medical examiner's office reported. Paramedics responded to the 911 call around 4:15 p.m. and Vidales was airlifted to Sharp Grossmont Hospital where, despite aggressive attempts at resuscitation, she was pronounced dead, stated the report. Rescues from area trails occur throughout the year, said the county, but most often during the summer months in popular hiking destinations such as Three Sisters Falls and Cedar Creek Falls, which has a trailhead in San Diego Country Estates. The Cleveland National Forest requires the purchase of a visitor use permit to hike the Cedar Creek Falls trail. Since the beginning of June, Ramona Fire Station 81 has been called on nine rescues at the trails for hikers at Cedar Creek Falls and Three Sisters Falls trails. On July 13, around 1:45 p.m., Station 81 responded to the rescue of a La Jolla father and his 9-year-old son at Three Sisters, said Capt. Bert Ramirez of the Ramona Fire Department/Cal Fire. The 56-year-old father and his son had hiked down the trail in the morn-
ing but ran out of water and didn't have the strength to hike out, the fire captain said. A sheriff's helicopter hoisted the two out of a canyon near the falls, according to the report. They were evaluated and rehydrated by Ramona fire department crews and declined transport to the hospital, said Ramirez. Most recently, the department assisted a 20-year-old female who suffered heat exhaustion while hiking at Cedar Creek last Thursday afternoon, noted Ramirez. She declined transport to a hospital. The first Sunday in July found paramedics and sheriff's officials assisting 10 people suffering from heat exhaustion along Three Sisters Trail. All declined transport to a hospital after receiving fluids and other cooling measures from emergency crews. Three were airlifted to Station 81 in San Diego Country Estates. To avoid getting dehydrated, sick, hurt or lost when hiking, the county said the following safety tips should be considered before hitting the trails: •Hikers should let someone know where they will be and when they plan to return. •Hike with others, never alone, and leave the dog at home for difficult hikes. •Take plenty of water to stay hydrated — one bottle is not enough. •Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. •Take breaks in shade, if possible. •Take a mobile phone, map and/or GPS. •Wear lightweight, light-colored, ventilated clothing. •Bring along a warm jacket if there are plans to stay out after dusk. •Wear sturdy shoes with traction for slippery rocks. •Follow all posted safety rules.

Judge orders public service for accomplice in assault The accomplice of a Ramona man who struck the new boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend and took his car was ordered to perform 30 days of public service work. Elias Rafael Ruiz, 26, was placed on three years probation and given credit for four days previously spent in jail with no further jail time.
The sentencing of his friend, Ricardo Daniel Macedo, 26, was delayed until Aug. 7. Both men pleaded guilty in June to felony assault of Ulysses Higuera, 23, who was kicked and beaten and had his car taken the evening of Nov. 24, 2013, at 2405 Main Street. Sheriff’s deputies recovered the car not
far from where Macedo lived. Macedo also pleaded guilty to auto theft. El Cajon Superior Court Judge Laura Halgren ordered Ruiz to pay the victim $1,620 for medical expenses that included tooth repair. Macedo remains free on $75,000 bond. —Neal Putnam
