"With the generosity of our IRWF members, we have collected $1,025 to aid in the numerous expenses involved in his recovery," Hurlburt and Fontana said. Dodson was on a combat foot patrol as an infantry squad leader when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded, taking off his legs, fracturing his pelvis and causing other injuries including a broken tailbone and broken right hand. It was his ÄM[O KLWSV`TLU[ ZPUJL OL entered the Marines in July 2003. The 11-year Marine, son of retired Marine Capt. he is ahead of schedule in his recovery, is done with surgeries, and is 90 percent healed. Kyle delivered the check to Brandon in 29 Palms, where Brandon, Jasmine and Indy spent a week in November to visit with friends, family and his platoon — and so he and Jasmine could attend the 29 Palms Marine Ball, noted Rachel Meyer of Intermountain Republican Women Federated. "He has a great attitude and is now walking on short Wounded Warrior legs," she said. Mike Metts and Ricardo Soto with Dudek Engineering, which contracts with the district to provide engineering services. "Mike and Ricardo were able to take a concept...and make it a doable functional project," said Barnum. "It was a monumental task just to get the concept approved." To accomplish the project, which broke ground in April, the district and construction crews faced several challenges. Because of the pump station’s location, the district had to work with the City of Poway, Blue Sky Reserve, California Fish and Wildlife, County of San Diego and San Diego Gas & Electric, which has a natural gas line running down Espola Road in Poway, about two miles from the pump station. In identifying the contractors and construction team, Barnum said, "All these folks worked very well as a team. And this wasn't an easy project." The project included trenching in the district's easement for approximately 3,700 feet of 4-inch gas pipeline, working with environmental groups, constructing a retaining wall 18 feet high at the hilly pump site and creating a larger pad, building a raised enclosure to house the 16-cylinder engine at a ZWLJPÄLK OLPNO[ HUK LUNPULLYPUN KLZPNU to keep the motor cool and reduce its

noise of operation. With the addition of the block retaining wall, district staff said square footage of the pad was increased to allow for a second gas engine in the future. "This project is about ingenuity," Barnum said. Property tax revenues funded the project. Director Joe Zenovic credited Barnum for initiating and seeing the job completed while Beck and Barnum thanked the community for its support. "I have yet to hear anything negative about the Poway Pump Station Project," said Barnum. Among contractors working on the project were T.C. Spotlight on Local | Businesses Dance Centre owner celebrates 30 years of story ballets By KAREN BRAINARD To celebrate her 30 years of producing story ballets and 35 years of teaching dance, Dance Centre of Ramona owner and artistic director Chi Varnado is inviting her former students to a reunion on Saturday, Dec. 20. "We're tying to get as many of the old students as possible — just to have a good time," Varnado said. The potluck reunion will follow her center's Dec. 20 performance of "The Nutcracker" at 2 p.m. in the Olive Peirce Middle School Charles R. Nunn Performing Arts Center. Another performance of "The Nutcracker" will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. The shows are open to the public. Tickets are $5 each or $20 per family at the door. Varnado is passionate about choreographing and staging story ballets that combine all dance forms and tumbling into a cohesive work of art so all students can participate. "Younger students are involved with the more advanced dancers and can see what they're aspiring to," said Varnado. Her studio's past productions have included ""Fantasia," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," "Mary Poppins," "Sound of Music" and "Alice in Wonderland." The studio at 2405 Main St. is known for its unique approach to the performance arts, said Varnado, and some of the ballets have been performed to live music.
"We're like a family here," she said. "We get to know each other well and are very supportive of each dancer's hard work and dedication. After all, dance should be joyful while at the same time aspiring to strengthen our technique." For Varnado, dance has been a wellsuited activity and career. "I always had a lot of energy and I was a musician at heart," she said. "This way I could put the musicality into action. Ballet is so creative and it's so technique-oriented. It's just so beautiful." Growing up, Varnado took ballet in Poway and competed in gymnastics. She earned a bachelor's degree in dance from San Diego State University and later added teaching credentials in elementary and secondary education. In addition to playing piano and guitar, she studied music theory in college. She has taught students in Ramona, Del Mar, Borrego Springs and Poway, and has choreographed for the Coronado Playhouse, Quinceaneras, weddings and reunions. In the early 1980s she taught creative movement at Ramona Community School when it started on Mussey Grade Road. Varnado comes from a family that is rooted in Ramona. She is in the third of Ä]L NLULYH[PVUZ [OH[ OH]L SP]LK PU [OL community. She and her husband, Kent Richardson, have three children: Jessie, 31, Cali, 27, and Chance, 21. No truth in THIS advertising With my daughter at college, I naturally expected the marketing onslaught from banks about hocking my house to pay for school. Most of these mailings get tossed right into the recycling bucket. But it was the item addressed “To the parents of” and emblazoned FINAL EXAMS INFORMATION ENCLOSED that caught my eye. You’ll recall that direct mail has three objectives: Get opened Get read Get acted upon This one was opened and read before anything else in the mailbox, thus achieving objectives one

Apparently the school has a deal with a New Jersey company that ships goodie baskets. My guess is the school provides the student’s contact information and then gets a sales commission for every package that’s sold. Don’t misunderstand: I’m not objecting to school fundraisers. These sales promotions are part of Marketing 101. The Chamber of Commerce is trying hard to bring the people downtown with the upcoming Christmas Tree lighting and Santa Claus visit on Saturday evening, Dec. 6, in Collier Park. They even recently fastened red bows to over 50 trees and light poles in the Old Town area of Main Street. That section will feature the Ramona Community Singers entertaining shoppers after the tree lighting by singing on the Town Hall steps while many of the merchants in the Old Town area will be open late with sales and some with refreshments for the eager shoppers. These merchants, spurred on by Unicorn Books and Gifts shop owners Stacy Bart and Julia Dammeir, have made some nice attempts to decorate their stores in the holiday spirit and will also be running a "Find the Elf" contest
with some nice prizes for the shoppers. These shops have been open Thursday evenings until 8 p.m. for the past few months. We hope that our local merchants will get on board and do a little more to bring the small town holiday spirit to downtown Ramona. There is even a :[VYL VMÄJL ^PUKV^ KLJVYH[PUN JVUtest" being sponsored by the chamber and Ramona Sentinel. All they have to do is decorate their operation and notify [OL JOHTILY VMÄJL [OH[ [OL` HYL PU [OL running for the prizes. By NANCY SAPPER Ramona resident Cal Rothe broke a land speed record recently. Rothe was just hanging out with childhood friend and roadster owner Pete Aardema for a weekend of fun and fast cars at El Mirage in San Bernardino County in early November. He wasn’t there to race, but when the
scheduled driver couldn’t compete on Sunday, Nov. 9, Aardema asked and Rothe jumped at the chance. Neither of them anticipated Rothe would get the V4 GMRE Roadster to 165 mph and set the world land speed record for this class of vehicle. Rothe has been into racing since he can remember. He wanted to
race competitively as a teen but had to wait until he was 21 because that was the youngest age allowed. He has predominately raced motorcycles but is also an experienced driver. He and Aardema are members of the San Diego Roadster Club, Sports Car Club of America and Southern California Timing Association, which

sanctioned the event. Aardema and his team built the car around a 1928 Ford Model A engine. “I like to think of it as a hamburger, said Aardema. “The engine is the meat and the basic building block. This class of roadster is relatively new in racing. When a new class is created, the sanctioning body will set a mid-level standard as a baseline. This class was set at 160 mph and no one had beaten that standard until Rothe was put in the driver’s seat at El Mirage.

Planners to address SDG&E proposed solar project Six IRS tips for year-end gifts to charity San Diego Gas & Electric is scheduled to meet Dec. 4 with Ramona Community Planning Group about its proposed photo voltaic solar facility on Creelman Lane. The utility needs a major use permit to build a 4 to 5 megawatt solar facility on 17.5 acres of its property at the northwest corner of Creelman Lane and Ashley Road. Residents on Creelman have voiced dissatisfaction with SDG&E, which has a substation at the end of the street. Creelman is a dirt road, and residents have complained about drivers of SDG&E trucks stirring up dust as they head to the utility’s substation. The residents
have asked SDG&E to pave the road to mitigate the dust, noting it will be exacerbated once construction starts on the solar project. In May the county related concerns about making the solar project compatible with the community character. According to the planning group agenda, consideration of the road issues and Scenic Area Designators that apply to the project will be discussed, and SDG&E will return to the planning group in the near future to present the full project. The planning group meets at 7 p.m. in Ramona Library Community Room, 1275 Main St.

Many people give to charity each year during the holiday season. To claim a tax deduction for gifts, you must itemize your deductions. amount of the gift. The statement must show the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution. Bank records include canceled checks, or bank, credit union and credit card statements. If you donate clothing and household items to charity they generally must be in at least good used condition to claim a tax deduction. However, one statement with all of the required information may meet both requirements. 5. @LHY LUK NPM[Z You can deduct contributions in the year you make them. If you charge your gift to a credit card before the end of the year it will count for 2014. This is true even if you don’t pay the credit card bill until 2015. Also, a check will count for 2014 as long as you mail it in 2014. 6. :WLJPHS Y\SLZ Special rules apply if you give a car, boat or airplane to charity. For more information, visit IRS.gov.
