OPMS celebrates Schools to Watch By BILL TAMBURRINO

he outdoor assembly at the Olive Peirce Middle School amphitheater Friday afternoon was akin to a pep rally as the school celebrated its Schools to Watch designation as a high-performing model middle school with state, regional and district officials. OPMS is one of four middle schools in the state receiving the designation this school year. Students, teachers, support staff, parents, administrators, school board members and guests witnessed the celebration of what Principal Linda Solis calls “the greatest school on the planet.” Dr. Irvin Howard, director of California School to Watch Program and president-elect of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, congratulated OPMS and presented a Schools to

Watch—Taking Center Stage banner that will be hung at the school. Accepting the banner were students Megan Vandervort, Emily Sojourner, Sidney Anderson, Matt Shaw, Maren Bagshaw, Sydney Hickle, and Austin Goodwin. The California Schools to Watch program recognizes a small number of diverse, high-performing, growth-oriented middle grades schools to demonstrate what all middlegrade schools are capable of achieving. Ramona pioneers to ‘attend’ Town Hall celebration By JESSICA KING

n Sunday, townsfolk will gather in the newly renovated west wing of Ramona Town Hall to celebrate its 118th anniversary. Two very special faces in the crowd will belong to Augustus and Martha Barnett, thanks to longtime Ramona resident, artist and preservationist Judy Nachazel. The Barnetts donated the Town Hall to Ramona in 1894. Using old photographs, Nachazel created three-quarter life size portraits of

Augustus and Martha in charcoal and graphite. The framed portraits, which now hang in the west wing, will be unveiled at Sunday’s celebration. According to ramonatownhall.com, Augustus thought it improper for dances to carry on all night at the schoolhouse, and that the growing town needed a place to serve that purpose as well as a library. Town Hall operates solely on private donations, fundraisers, grant money and rent collected for use of the building.

Renovations have included seismic retrofitting, new plumbing and electrical wiring, new roof, fire sprinkles and improvements to the façade. Capturing the essence of one of Ramona’s most prominent early couples was no easy task for Nachazel, who retired as editor of the San Vicente Valley News three years ago and until now has done mostly portraits of living family members. Man steals cash from Nancy’s Cleaners in daytime robbery A man dropped a cash register he was trying to take from a Ramona dry cleaner business on Monday but still got away with some cash that he picked up from the floor, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. The man entered Nancy’s Cleaners at 1668 Main Street about 12:45 p.m. and grabbed the cash register from the counter, said sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Vengler. He dropped the register while trying to leave the business, but picked up a small undetermined amount and ran northeast

from the shopping center, Vengler said. No one was injured, Vengler said. Several witnesses saw the burglary and saw the suspect run away, he added. Witnesses described the suspect as a white male with dirty blond hair who was between 16 and

25 years old, between 5 feet 8 and 6 feet tall and weighed between 180 and 220 pounds. He was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, black shorts and a black baseball cap. Officers searched from the air and ground on Monday but did not find the suspect.

Several years ago I can still remember this day like it was yesterday. I was working in Borrego Springs pumping a tank and I received a call from my wife, Yvonne. Our daughter, Chrissy, smelled propane in the house. Chrissy had used her propane fireplace for the first time the night before. I could not get there for two hours so I told Yvonne to shut off the gas and open all the windows. She didn’t know where to shut off the gas so she took along a helpful neighbor, we’ll just call him “Luis” (not his real name). When they arrived Yvonne opened the downstairs windows and Chrissy went to open the upstairs windows. Luis decided to further investigate the gas leak, “perhaps a lit match would help pinpoint the gas leak” he thought. Well, the result was an explosion that blew the drywall off around the fireplace and upstairs. The stucco was shattered into the chicken wire patterns, a large piece of drywall had shielded Luis from the fireball. The screens were all torn or in the yard. An angel that was on the mantle shot across the house and out the kitchen window (metaphorically, the last angel flew out the window a minute earlier). No one was injured other than ringing in their ears, but the call to the insurance adjuster was embarrassing. On a positive note, the defective valve was now easy to see. The Lesson? Don’t call just anybody to work on your house. If you have a septic problem, call the professionals at Sludgebusters. We have excellent equipment and highly trained professionals. You’ll be miles ahead if you get someone that knows what they are doing in the first place.

Residents meet the artists, celebrate first mural By KAREN BRAINARD With a band playing, refreshments, and artists’ autographs, the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project board celebrated its first mural with other residents on Saturday afternoon. Artists John and Jeanne Whalen painted the mural of American cowboy, rodeo performer and actor Casey Tibbs on the Town & Country Real Estate & Home Loans tower at Main and 10th streets. People came out to the corner of 10th and Main streets to view the mural and then

enjoyed music by Shirthouse Bluegrass Band in the parking lot of Town & Country. Copies of a photo of the Whalens standing on the tower’s balcony between the two Casey Tibbs panels were provided for the artists to autograph. The Whalens are renowned for painting the mural of Charles Lindberg on the Commuter Terminal at the San Diego Airport. Jeanne Whalen said the benefit of painting the mural on panels is that they can work in the studio and not worry about weather conditions. The panels are about

Woodward Museum to research Casey Tibbs, who lived his latter years in Ramona. “We were able to research his accomplishments. It was so appropriate at the entrance here,” she said, referring to the Old Town location. Judy Nachazel, vice president of the H.E.A.R.T. mural board and an artist, commended the Whalens on their work. “They’re easy to work with. Excellent artists,” she said. Nachazel said the mural board’s goal is to have about three dozen outdoor murals created in town.

“We’re anxious to get enough murals to become a destination,” she said. “We already have the traffic. We want them to stop.” Nachazel added that she believes the murals will create community pride. Elaine Lyttleton, president of the mural board, is pleased with the first mural and said comments from the community have been positive. The board will meet in a couple of weeks to discuss the next mural, she said, adding they already have some ideas. Once the mural theme and location are selected, Nachazel will put out an artist call. The Whalens, who live in La Mesa, said they would enjoy painting another mural in Ramona.

Blockbuster Video in countdown to closing By REGINA ELLING With the rumors neither confirmed nor denied, Chuck Sweet, the general manager at Blockbuster Video in Ramona, can’t comment on the official reason his store is closing. The unexpected shutdown has a number of town residents without their favorite movie rental shop, while others are already hitting the shelves, looking for their next bargain. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, the store, located at 1676 Main St. next to Stater Bros. Market, began to prepare for its final sale, and everything in the shop is up for grabs. Marc Lumpkin, director of corporate communications for Dish Network and Blockbuster, said, “Stores can close for a number of reasons, such as the store reaching the end of its lease, a store may be too large in size, or property owners may be unwilling to reach a reasonable lease renewal.”

He added, “Blockbuster LLC continues to evaluate the performance of each store location individually. As we have said in previous statements, we remain committed to maintaining only those stores that we believe we will be able to operate profitably.” Looking beyond the official statement, Kim Lasley, director of the Arriba Teen Center at 1710 Montecito Road, couldn’t help but view the store’s abrupt closing as “all wrong. We really need to keep what we have here in Ramona. We have too many empty

storefronts as it is.” Lasley said the youth at Arriba will feel the impact of the store closing. “Blockbuster has been really cool with us,” she said. “They would give us free game and movie rentals every week, they let us have the movie posters from the windows to decorate with, and they even gave out discount and gift coupons.” She praised the recent takeover of Blockbuster stores by Dish Network, saying, “They have been trying to work with the community even more

To begin with, you can open a Roth IRA at any age, provided you have earned income and meet certain income limits. So if you’re just starting out in your career, put as much as you can afford into your Roth IRA and gradually increase your contributions as your income rises, up to the contribution limit. In fact, if you started putting money into a Roth IRA at age 30, and you contributed the maximum amount each year until you reached 65, you would accumulate more than $766,000, assuming you are in the 25% tax bracket and you earned a 7% return, compounded annually. But, given the

same assumptions, you’d end up with only about $365,000 if you waited until 40 before you started contributing. It clearly pays to contribute early and annually to a Roth IRA. (In 2011, the annual contribution limit is $5,000, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.) There are additional benefits to funding a Roth IRA, such as its flexible withdrawal options, which are available to you even before you retire. Since you already paid taxes on the money you put into your Roth, you can withdraw your contributions at any time without paying taxes or penalties. Generally speaking, it’s certainly best to leave your Roth IRA intact for as long as possible. But if there’s an emergency

Now, let’s fast-forward to your retirement. Unlike other retirement accounts, such as a traditional IRA or a 401(k), your Roth IRA does not require you to start taking withdrawals at age 70½ — or ever. If you don’t need the money, you can leave it alone for as long as you like. This means that you might have more money to bequeath to your children or other beneficiaries, and they won’t have to pay income taxes on withdrawals from either your contributions or your earnings, provided your Roth IRA account has been open for at least five years. Keep in mind, though, that your beneficiaries will be required to take distributions based on their life expectancy. Another customer bemoaned the fact that there is no other video shop around that knew its customers as well as the Ramona store. Obviously a horse lover, she said, “It was always great to see the dozens of copies of horse movies they would have out for us locals every time a new horse show hit the theaters. We knew we could always find copies of ‘Seabiscuit,’ ‘Secretariat,’ ‘Hidalgo’ and all the others here.” There is still plenty of time for shoppers to make their way to Blockbuster, as Sweet said they plan to continue lowering prices until the final sale in mid-

April. And in the meantime, any movies and other items rented must still be returned to the store. Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010. According to numerous Internet sources, at that time, the plan was to keep the 3,300 stores running. But at more than $900 million in debt, Dish Network, which purchased Blockbuster in April 2011 for $320 million, announced that it would only keep 500 of the Blockbuster stores open. In January 2011, Dish announced more stores would be closing, but declined to name specific stores.

t wasn’t that long ago that churches were considered sacred, a secure place to go and meditate, pray or just take time to access from within whatever time of day. And now, with more than half a dozen incidents involving break-ins and vandalism since November of last year, our once sacred churches and places of worship need to install security cameras, make sure all doors and windows are locked and secured. This is not just a religious concern, but a concern of our entire community. Burglaries, robberies, tagging (spray painting), tire slashing and other vandalism in most cases does not involve bodily harm, but still impacts our daily lives. The first mural of the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Project was unveiled this past Saturday on the tower of Town & Country Real Estate & Home Loans at Main and 10th streets. The mural is spectacular, but was installed in panels in case of vandalism, where if one panel was damaged, the entire mural would not be affected and the damaged panel could be repaired. I remember as a child volunteering at my school many times for spring clean-up day. It involved pulling weeds, raking leaves and picking up trash; now clean-up days require cans of paint as well. Simple repairs and maintenance because of vandalism costs millions of dollars a year. It’s time for all of us to be as vigilant as we can to assist in fighting these crimes. If you see any suspicious behavior or damage being done, call the Sheriff’s Department immediately. Together we can help keep Ramona a safe and welcome place.

Takes a TEAM to run an Athletic Department Together Everyone Achieves More

ith the winter sports season about over now and spring sports beginning, I feel it is the perfect time to “Thank” those responsible for making our Athletic Department run. With budget cutbacks and the economy at an all-time low, we have been able to operate effectively because of many volunteer people. First and foremost the PTSA group at our high school is worthy of ‘OSCAR’ consideration. These ladies do an incredible job of working the ticket gates at our athletic events of football, basketball, and wrestling. These three sports are what support the entire Athletic Department. What does this mean? We charge ticket prices at these events per CIF and NCC rules and guidelines. Faculty at some schools work these jobs, but here in Ramona our PTSA volunteers do this for us. At the end of the year the athletic department gives some money back to the group for them to give out scholarships, etc. What makes this group so special is the time that many of these ladies

give during the winter sport season, which is the busiest time of the athletic season with basketball and wrestling matches taking up as much as four nights per week. Leighanne Kerchner works as the liaison to me, the athletic director, and weekly we are in communication via email, text, or phone call organizing and planning to make sure we have ticket takers for all the events. Leighanne is a tireless volunteer who does a fantastic job. Ladies who put in extra time this season were Darlene Scott and Lisa Jansen. It seems like every time I walked into an event, these ladies were here counting money, taking tickets, dealing with people trying to get in games for free, and all the different passes that people show to get

In today’s times it takes special people willing to continue to provide, lead, develop, and create our leaders of tomorrow. Sometimes I think Sacramento should let coaches run education. If there is going to be less available, coaches will make sure that the kids still succeed. Court delays hearing A preliminary hearing for a Ramona man facing charges of cultivating marijuana in a business park has been delayed until April 19. Edward Michael Hanson, 30, has pleaded not guilty to possession of marijuana for sale and to cultivating marijuana. Sheriff’s deputies answered a burglar alarm at 3 a.m. on Dec. 17 at 607 Brazos St., where they found marijuana plants growing in several suites. They seized growing equipment, marijuana food products, and other items. Hanson remains free on $25,000 bond.

Knights of Columbus 17th annual Lenten fish fries start Friday By MAUREEN ROBERTSON The 17th Annual Lenten Fish Fry, touted as “all you can eat, best fish fries in town,” will begin on Friday, Feb. 24, and continue every Friday in March. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, the fish fries will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the church’s Social Center at Sixth and E streets. Dinner includes Atlantic cod, french fries or mashed pota-

toes, cole slaw, rolls and coffee/ punch. A bowl of clam chowder is $1.50, and ice cream is $1. Six two-person teams to match brainpower in benefit Trivia Bee By MAUREEN ROBERTSON Six two-person teams will see who knows the most as they compete in the Friends of Ramona Library Trivia Bee on Saturday evening. “If you like trivia and TV shows like ‘Jeopardy,’ you’ll enjoy a great evening while assisting the library,” said Rache-

al Gilmore, Friends of Ramona Library member coordinating the event. The Trivia Bee will be in the Ramona Library Community Room, 1275 Main St. In addition to the teams matching their brainpower, the event will feature a catered buffet and wine tasting from 6 to 7 p.m. Four Ramona vintners will offer their

wines for tasting. Music will be provided by Ramona saxophonist Frank Lucio. A dozen opportunity baskets ranging in value from $150 to $200 will be given away, and six silent auction items valued from $70 to $500 will go to the highest bidders. Tickets are $25 each and are available in advance at the Ramona Chamber of Commerce office, 960 Main St., and the Friends of Ramona Library Bookstore in the library. Tickets also will be available at the door. All proceeds benefit the library. About 40 businesses have donated

items or certificates for the baskets and silent auction, said Gilmore. Trivia Bee fun will start at 7 p.m. Ramonans expert in specific fields prepared the questions. Among categories are art/museum, books/libraries, animals, history, food/wine, sports, theater and finances. The competing teams are representing the San Vicente Valley Club, Ramona Rotary Club, Kiwanis of Ramona, Robb Family (mother-son team), Ramona Journal and Ramona Concert Association. Equine quarantine, a must-do for horse owners

he other day my friends and I were talking about our rescue foals and of course the subject of quarantine came up. A few of us decided to rescue some babies from slaughter a couple of months ago and we often compare notes since they are all of similar age. We all believe wholeheartedly in quarantining new horses, but for how long and to what extent were different for each of us, which I found interesting. As experienced horse women, how could we possibly have a difference of opinion about something as important as quarantine? One of my friends said, “It’s like not sending sick children to school. If they are all boogery, you just don’t send them!” I replied with: ”Oh no, it’s more serious than that. I quarantine any new horse regardless of where they came from or lack of symptoms. Even though I vaccinate my own horses, vaccination is no guarantee they won’t get sick. Besides, not all equine illnesses present obvious symptoms right away or all the time.” A couple of my friends thought two weeks is enough time in quarantine and the other agreed with my 30-day minimum rule. With all of the illnesses that can affect our horses, even some that are deadly, I just don’t believe in taking that chance. Strangles, Equine Herpes Virus, Dryland Distemper and so many other threats to the health of my horses are of concern any time a new horse enters my property. (We’ll cover illnesses in the future.) I even quarantine horses I acquire and am familiar with. I have no idea what they may have been exposed to so I keep them separated for at least a month. Thirty days is my minimum quarantine time, not negotiable. The horses may feel a bit lonely for that month in a corral all by themselves on the back 40, but it’s not forever and they all live through it. As our discussion continued we realized that quarantine doesn’t merely mean keeping a new horse separated from the others for a period of time. Quarantine should include disinfection

as well. We all agreed that we would, and do, disinfect our trailers if we’ve hauled horses that may be sick, but if we trailer out with friends or acquaintances how would we know if they sanitize? Are we putting our horses at risk by traveling with friends? I have never asked anyone else about their sanitation habits, although I rarely travel with Cricket in someone else’s trailer. The few times I have put Cricket into a different trailer, it’s been with someone I know very well. That got me to thinking about so many other ways that my horses could be-

How many of us disinfect those before we take them home and clamp them together for our own horses? We have no way of knowing where the used panels have been. Used feeders, waterers, troughs, stall mats and all the other items we always need more of, and that are so hard to come by at an affordable price, could pose a threat as well. Do you get out the disinfectant before you load them up on your trailer or even before you

use them? Yes, you most likely rinse out and possibly even scrub the water or feed buckets, but germs can survive the hose and scrub brush. Our conversation then turned from travel and used items to camping and placing our beloved horses in public corrals, which we do quite often. It has crossed my mind more than once that this could be a dangerous practice. I have no idea what horses were in those corrals prior to our visit and I have no way of knowing if any of them were ill in any way. What really woke me up to this threat was having someone at camp recently with a horse that ended up being ill. Not purposely; he was symptom free until the third day of camp, but how was I to know what other illnesses could have been fermenting and germinating in the soil that my horse was standing on and would be eating off of at dinner time? I started to feel a little paranoid. I love my horse, she is my partner. Shortness of breath overcame me just

briefly. OK, time for a reality check….. There is no putting our horses in a plastic bubble. My friends and I decided that we would not become overprotective and keep our horses home all the time. We can keep them safer fairly easily. There are many horse-safe disinfectants out there, just search online. They are easy to find and worth every penny. In an effort to be more cost conscious, one of my pals uses a bleach solution in a spray-

Ramona Community School opens enrollment window A part of the Ramona Unified School District, Ramona Community School at 1010 Ramona St. offers alternative educational styles. Unlike the school district’s traditional schools where enrollment is based on where students live, families must submit applications during the open enrollment period to be considered for enrollment in Ramona Community. Ramona Community School is accepting requests for enrollment for the 201213 school year for its two programs: Montessori Academy (K-8th) and Mountain Valley Academy (K-12th). As part of the Ramona public school system, enrollment in Ramona Community is free. Although applications will continue to be accepted through June, the “Priority Enrollment Window” closes on Friday, April 13. Montessori Academy is a K-8th grade program based on the theory and teach-

Celebrating 118 years

amona Town Hall trustees invite the community to join them and Honorary Mayor Sharon Davis to the 118th anniversary celebration of the historic hall and the unveiling of portraits of Martha and Augustus Barnett, who donated the building at 729 Main St. to the townspeople on Feb. 22, 1894. The celebration, from 1 to 4 Sentinel photos/Maureen Robertson p.m. on Sunday, also will mark the Construction Committee Chair Darrell Beck cuts re-opening of Town Hall’s West molding for West Wing. Wing, and there will be tours of the building. The East Wing, which may once again be home to the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, has been available for public use. Renovation of the main hall is not yet done, but it will be open for the tours. “Please let us take you on a tour of Town Hall to see all the improvements,” said Davis, who earned her two two-year terms as honorary mayor by raising money for Town Hall renovation. Ramona musicians Pam and Andrew Stubbs will play period music on piano and violin, and refreshments will be served. Town Hall memorabilia will be sold to raise money for continued upkeep and renovation, and donation jars will be out to accept cash and checks for the project. Barnett portraits

of the Barnetts’ portraits was a no-brainer. Nachazel moved to Ramona 30 years ago and immediately joined the local art guild. At the time, the art guild met in Town Hall. “The Town Hall was where I made my very first friends in Ramona and those people are still my very good friends today,” Nachazel said. “Town Hall was my first connection to Ramona.” Nachazel spent several months on the Barnetts’ portraits, beginning with a search for old photographs that contained enough detail to accurately depict the 19th century couple in the 21st century-made portraits. As president of the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society, Nachazel certainly had the proper connections. The society runs the Guy B. Woodward Museum located just one block east of Town Hall. But “nobody knew what they really looked like,” Nachazel explained. “Of all the photographs we had in the archives of the

museum, there were no close-ups of Augustus and there were some of Martha but not any close up enough to be good enough for a portrait.” That’s when Nachazel turned to the board of trustees that runs Town Hall. Jackpot – in the files of the Town Hall organization were two professional individually photographed portraits of Augustus and Martha. But there was still one more obstacle to overcome. “When they take a photograph with a flash, a lot of the information is lost,” Nachazel said, noting that characteristics of the eyes and other facial features are more difficult to read. To complete the puzzle, Nachazel met with fellow Ramona resident Dan Parker, the Barnetts’ greatgrandson. “I was looking for any features that I could get, to make it a little more accurate,” Nachazel said. “I wanted to put a lot of detail into the eyes since they’re the focal point of the por-

ifty by fifty. That is… run an ultramarathon, specifically a 50 mile race, by age 50. It sounds simple enough, and at age 47, I actually have more than one year to get it done. But I figure that I better give myself a little room for set-

backs such as illness or injury. As New Year’s resolutions go, it’s not going to change the world, but is certainly one of the tougher goals that I have personally made. “Ultrarunning” as a sport is still in its infancy, but is growing in the collective

consciousness of runners at a very rapid pace. An ultramarathon, or “ultra,” is any running event that is longer than a marathon, usually 50K, 50 miles, 100K, or 100 miles. However, this column is not meant to be sage advice from an expert, but more of a trial and error, “don’t-make-the-samemistake-that-I-just-did,” how-to (or how-not-to) train for an ultra. In other words, “A Beginner’s Guide” means “by a beginner” more than it means “for beginners.” Each week I will try to cover different aspects of running, using my own

training schedule and progress, most of which will apply to running of any distance, but some of which will be specific to running ultras. For example, getting lost during a race… in the middle of the night… on a badly marked trail… lit only by a tiny handheld flashlight… and the nearest runner to you is over a half hour ahead or behind. I haven’t yet experienced this particular thrill, but apparently it’s quite common in the longer races. Sunday, Feb. 12, I ran in the San Dieguito Half Marathon. I was one of three run-

ners from Ramona out of about 1,300 participants. (A shout-out to my fellow Ramonans — L. Robison and S. Monreal!) San Dieguito is a nice course, though not particularly easy as it winds the 13.1 miles over rolling hills in Del Mar. My goal was to run smoothly, and treat it as a training run, carrying two water bottles with me (a hand-held and one on a waist pack), since aid stations on many of the longer runs are often five to 10 miles apart. I finished in 1:50:50 (1 hour, 50 minutes, 50 seconds), a pace of 8:28 per mile. That’s probably

much too fast a pace for me in an ultra, but we’ll see. I was a little sore the next day, but nothing too severe. Hopefully anyone interested in running, no matter what age or level of runner you are (and admittedly many readers will be far more advanced runners than I), will find this column interesting and somewhat educational. And hopefully I will run and finish the 50-miler a lot sooner than age 50, but it’s hard to know what to expect at this point. Besides, “50 by 49” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Now get out and run.

The Miracle of Chancey

n my last article, we learned about the Hearts and Hands Animal Rescue (www.hhar. org) and Nancy Nunke, who rescues and rehabilitates animals at the Spots

and Stripes Ranch here in Ramona. My first series of rescue stories starts with one such case that I am calling the miracle of Chancey. In April 2009, he was brought to Nancy by the owner as a last ditch effort to save his life. Chancey had been attacked and mauled by pit bulls and left for dead. His neck was broken; his lower face was torn off, including his upper lip. He was bleeding constantly and could barely breathe and he had an infection in the bone on his face. Bulldog wrestlers: Division III CIF champions By BILL TAMBURRINO

teve Koch, Ramona High wrestling coach, believes wholeheartedly in a quote by the late basketball coach John Wooden: “I’d rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent.” Koch started the season with a very young varsity wrestling team. Ten sophomores and a freshman wrestled on the varsity this season. Koch and co-head coach Dwayne Guile said they took that talented group and worked them hard. The group responded and on Saturday won the Division III San Diego Section CIF wrestling championship at Mt. Miguel High School. The championship was Ramona’s fourth overall and the first since 2003. The Dawgs have finished in second place six times. do a great job of preparing our athletes to wrestle. We were well prepared and in the best shape at the right time. The main ingredient in stardom is the rest of the team.” Some coaches forfeit weights during league matches if they have inexperienced wrestlers in that weight. Ramona’s staff does the opposite. Koch has his wrestlers

wrestle at the highest possible level. He used over 20 wrestlers in varsity matches so, when injuries hit, a wrestler with experience can jump in. Koch’s strategy paid off with a championship. Twelve wrestlers qualified for the Masters Meet Friday and Saturday at Otay Ranch High School and two will go as alternates. So the entire team will go.

Ramona had the championship won after the semifinal round as the Bulldogs sent five wrestlers to the finals. The Bulldogs amassed 237 team points to win the championship. Second place Central Union High School had 173.5 points. Palomar League rival Mt. Carmel came in third with 164.5 and host school Mt. Miguel took fourth with 145.

The Palomar League had a good day in general. Poway won its 25th consecutive Division I championship. Rancho Bernardo took third place in Division II. Arturo Osorio-Ramirez won the championship in the 128-pound classification and Isaiah Ilich won the championship in the 138-pound class. Both did it with dramatic third peri-

Water Dawgs win playoff quarterfinal By JOE NAIMAN The CIF playoff seeding and selection meeting ranked Ramona High School’s girls water polo team third among the three Division II teams in the Palomar League, but the Bulldogs were still seeded fourth in the Division II playoffs. The selection committee’s decision last Monday was vindicated Feb. 18 when Ramona was one of three Division II teams with a first-round bye to win its quarterfinal match. “We’re fine with that,” Coach Donnie

Williams said of the fourth seed. “We pretty much felt we’d beat anybody below us anyway.” The No. 4 seeding was the highest in Ramona girls water polo history. The top four seeds received first-round byes, so Ramona’s post-season began with an 8-5 win over La Costa Canyon in a match played at La Jolla High School’s Coggan Pool. “I thought we played well against La Costa Canyon,” Williams said. Each team scored once in the first period, but Ramona had a 6-1 halftime lead and an 8-3 margin after three quarters before the Mavericks

scored both fourth-quarter goals. “We just played it safe a little bit,” Williams said of the second half. Kirk Kaliszewski is the feel-good story of the season. Kaliszewski suffered a leg injury late in the football season and struggled to rehab the injury late into the wrestling season. He finally got medical clearance and wrestled himself into shape and won a third place medal at 152 pounds by pinning Justin Nunez of Central Union in the CIF Championships. Troy Jordan (145), Noe Hernandez (182), Josh Allen (195) and Zach Berg (220) all took fourth place and all will go to the Masters. Jureall Simmons finished the day with a win and took fifth place in the heavyweight (285) division to earn a trip to Otay Ranch High School this weekend. Martin Dowers took sixth place in the 115 pound class to earn a trip to the Masters. Zach Lane (120) and Brian Coane (160) both won three bouts and valuable team points and both will be alternates at the Masters. When a lot of talent gets a lot of coaching and a lot of conditioning and a lot of valuable experience during the season, the result is a CIF championship. Ramona has won four CIF Championships under the tutelage of Steve Koch and has come in second six times.

Girls basketball team earns berth in CIF playoffs

Ramona High’s girls played well in the their final two regular season basketball games but dropped Palomar League decisions to Mt. Carmel and Torrey Pines in the Dawg House. The Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 13-13 record and were 2-8 in their final season in the Palomar League. For their efforts the Lady Bulldog basketball team received a ninth seed in the Division II CIF playoffs and were scheduled to travel to Bonita Vista High School Feb. 22 for a game at 7 p.m. Ramona gave the Palomar League champions Mt. Carmel Sundevils (235, 9-1) all they could handle in a 56-47 home court loss. The Lady Dawgs led af-

shooting wrist. She hit two from the three point stripe. VanTol recorded another double. The senior post player scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Paige Conroy crashed the boards from her guard position and grabbed eight rebounds and scored four points. Katherine Mauldin and Ashlyn Savage came off the bench and played well. Mauldin had four points and three boards and Savage scored two points and grabbed two rebounds. Kailey Hill (2), Tiana Zuniga (1) and Megan Buckley (3) also scored for the Lady Dawgs. The Lady Bulldogs dropped their final regular season game and their final game in the Palomar League to Torrey Pines (1314, 4-6) 50-44 before a Senior Night crowd.

Whelehon led all scorers with 14 points. She hit three from beyond the three point line. Whelehon also led all players with five steals on the defensive end of the court. Zuniga played an excellent game. She grabbed 10 boards, dished off two assists, recorded three steals had five deflections and scored nine points. As senior guard, Conroy grabbed 10 rebounds, an assist and scored eight points. On defense she had three steals, a blocked shot and a deflection. VanTol had eight rebounds and 8 points with three assists and two steals. Katherine Mauldin scored 3 points and grabbed two rebounds. Savage, Buckley, Hill and Ward played well on defense.

Ramona thought it had a chance for its first Palomar League victory in school history going into the Mt. Carmel game. However, on game day that chance was diminished when Coach David Reichner learned that his leading scorer, Jonathan Schirer, and his leading rebounder, Kwayde Miller, were not available for the game due to illnesses. Zach White stepped up big time and had the best game of his career to help lead the Bulldogs to a 6864 victory over The Mount (13-13, 2-8). White led the Dawgs in scoring with a career high 20 points. He started off hot as he scored eight of the first nine Bulldog points. He finished strong as he hit two key free throws in the final seconds to ensure the victory. White averaged 4.2 points going into the game. White also did his share on the defensive side of the court. The junior shooting guard blocked two shots and recorded three steals. He was not the only Bulldog to step up in the victory. Travis Stevens doubled his scoring aver-

age by putting 18 points in the scorebook. He played a complete game on both ends of the court by grabbing eight boards and dishing off five assists. His defensive game was stellar as he blocked two shots and had a season high seven steals. The game was a battle from the beginning to the final seconds. Ramona led after the first eight minutes 20-17. White had 13 of those points. Mt. Carmel battled back and took a 35-31 lead into the locker room. The Dawgs outscored the Sundevils 17-9 in the third period. The Mount battled back and took a lead in the fourth period but the Dawgs battled back. Stevens tied the score and hit two free throws with less than 10 seconds left and White was fouled after a steal and sealed the victory with two swishes from the charity stripe. ball and shot it into the net. Velasco was ruled offsides, although such an infraction would have had to occur prior to Dolan receiving his pass and the call should have been whistled at that time. The game’s first goal was scored in the final seconds of the first half after Ramona was unsuccessful in clearing a corner kick. A Mount Carmel shot went off Ramona defender Connor Maruna and was deflected into the net for an own goal. With about 15 minutes left, Jordan switched to a formation with three forwards, four midfielders, and three defenders. With about six minutes left, Abraham Cabrera played a long ball across the field to Maruna. “Connor made a great run. The ball came all the way across,” Jordan said. This time Ramona benefited from an own goal as the pass was deflected off the Mt. Carmel defender. After the Bulldogs tied the game Jordan went to a formation with four defenders, four midfielders, and two forwards. The Ramona players were not willing to settle for a tie, and two minutes after the first goal Andy Garcia took a shot that went over the crossbar. “I started thinking to myself, ‘We can win this game,’” Jordan said. “I thought to myself, ‘These boys aren’t going to settle back. They’re going to go for it.’” Ramona’s players had the same thought. With about three minutes left, Garcia’s long shot was deflected by the goalkeeper, but he recovered the rebound and played the ball to Carlos Blanco, who scored the winning goal. “It was amazing,” Jordan said. “It was a nice way to honor our seniors.” In addition to being Senior Night, Feb. 14 was also Jordan’s birthday. “It was a pretty special night,” he said. The loss was only the fourth of the season for Mt. Carmel, which entered league play undefeated. Feb. 16 was Senior Night for Torrey Pines, and the Falcons had 15 senior players honored. Torrey Pines also had the Palomar League championship at stake. A tie against Ramona would mean a shared

league title with Poway, while a loss would give the Titans the league championship. The Falcons scored the game’s first two goals, but before the first half was over Dolan’s pass to Garcia turned into Garcia’s 16th goal of the 2011-12 season. That also put Ramona within one goal of the potential equalizer. “The boys made me a believer,” Jordan said. The margin stayed at a single goal for the first 39 minutes of the second half. “We had two incredible chances to get the equalizer and maybe even go up and just couldn’t get it done,” Jordan said. The Bulldogs met their goal of a 2-2-1 record for the second half of the Palomar League season. Ramona’s final league record was 3-6-1, which gave the Bulldogs fifth place in the six-team standings. The sixth-place team, Rancho Bernardo, defeated Poway for its only league win. “Top to bottom any team can beat any team,” Jordan said. Ramona’s final regular-season record was 10-11-3. On Feb. 18 the CIF playoff selection and seeding meeting gave the Bulldogs the 10th seed in the Division II playoffs and a Feb. 21 first-round game at Serra. “I was extremely disappointed by that,” Jordan said of the seed. Mount Carmel was seeded fourth in Division II. “How do you beat a team that got a bye and not get a home game yourself?” Jordan said. The Bulldogs’ tie was against Poway, which received the third seed in the Division I playoffs. Torrey Pines also earned a Division I first-round bye with the second seed while Westview’s third seed in Division II gave the Wolverines a first-round bye. The winner of the Ramona-Serra game, which took place after this issue went to press, will play Saturday at second-seeded La Costa Canyon. “At least we’re in the tournament and we go from there, and now we get to play the underdog,” Jordan said.

The ball hit the top of the post and bounced in front of the net, but the referee ruled that it had crossed the entirety of the goal line and awarded the Sundevils a score. “We’re still happy with the result,” Vandervort said. “They played very, very good soccer.” The Feb. 16 game was played in Ramo-

na and was Senior Night. All 11 of Ramona’s seniors started the game. “The girls were very fired up. The seniors did a great job,” Vandervort said. “We got off to a very good start.” The first half was scoreless. The senior starters included goalie Maria Solis, sweeper Lexi Hogan, and outside defenders Briana Gansch and Emily Vandervort. Schmidt was the stopper for the Bulldogs’ defense in her final high school game while Katie White was the back midfielder. A chip shot in the 63rd minute gave the Falcons the game’s only goal. “We kept battling the rest of the game,” Vandervort said. “Our shots just went a little bit wide.” Solis, who had eight saves against Mt. Carmel, made 10 saves in her final high school game. “In general we were very, very happy with the way the girls played,” Vandervort said. “Good night for the girls.”

Paulina Bernd scored two goals while Cassie Bernas placed one shot into the net. Both of those players played sparingly in the second half. Bernd’s third exclusion penalty in the fourth quarter removed her from the game while Bernas was hit during play and missed parts of the third and fourth quarters. Penalties accounted for the Mavericks goals. Four were scored on extra-player situations and La Costa Canyon took a successful five-meter penalty shot. The Mavericks had 10 extra-player opportunities. “We had a lot of exclusions in the game,” Williams said.

Top-seeded Valhalla took a 12-6 win over Steele Canyon. Semifinal competition between Ramona and Valhalla on Feb. 22 was played after this edition went to press. The winner will play in the championship match Saturday evening at Coggan Pool.

CWA to discuss water, future rates at RMWD

San Diego County Water Authority (CWA) will give a presentation on water and future rates at the Ramona Municipal Water District’s board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28, according to RMWD General Manager David Barnum. RMWD board meetings are open to the public and begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Ramona Community Center, 434 Aqua Lane. The county water authori-

ty is the sole supplier of water to Ramona’s water district. CWA purchases water from the Metropolitan Water District, the Los Angelesbased water wholesaler. Barnum said a member of CWA’s senior management will address what the water authority believes the Met’s rate increases will be this year and how that will impact Ramona’s water district, and give projections for future water rates.

CIF wrestling champions Arturo Osorio-Ramirez and Isaiah Ilich By BILL TAMBURRINO Two Ramona studentathletes earned the prestigious title of CIF Champion in wrestling: Arturo Osorio-Ramirez and Isaiah Ilich. For their accomplishments they have been selected the Ramona Sentinel Athletes of the week. Arturo is a sophomore who didn’t start wrestling until last year. He was

thrown into the mix early in the season and wrestled several matches due to injuries to more experienced wrestlers. “He is a warrior,” said Coach Dwayne Guile. “Right from the start we could see that he had the heart of a champion. He worked hard and he is now a champion.” Arturo won the championship by coming from

behind in the championship bout and pinning his foe with 28 seconds left in the bout. “It was a quick pin but he would have had enough points to earn the win. He never gave up,” stated Coach Steve Koch. It was a special day for Arturo because his parents, Javier and Constancia, were able to see him wrestle for the first time

this season. They saw him at his best, winning the championship. “I couldn’t have done it without the coaches,” said Arturo. “All five of them contribute something positive at every practice and match.” Junior Isaiah Ilich won the CIF championship in the 138-pound classification with 10 seconds to spare. Giblin is from Galway, Ireland and has performed in many venues, including the Lincoln Center and Kennedy Compound. Caldwell specialized in sound engineering at Strathclyde University in Ireland before heading on the road. When not performing, he operates his own studio, producing under the Highland Way Productions’ label.

Castellanos, the original bass player for Jethro Tull, has been playing “anything with strings” for 30 years. Faith has been playing drums since the age of 14 and through the Highland Way Band has re-connected to his Scottish roots. The concert will be in the performing arts center at Olive Peirce Middle School, 1521 Hanson Lane, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 for seating. Tickets for non-season ticket
