Filmmaking opens new world for Ramona High graduate Editor’s Note: This is one in the Sentinel’s “Where Are They Now?â€? series about Ramona graduates — where they are and what they are doing. By KAREN BRAINARD Passionate about storytelling and highlighting ZVJPHS PZZ\LZ [OYV\NO Ă„ST Laurel Gwizdak has embarked on a journey that has taken her from Ramona to urban centers and remote villages overseas, including one in Ukraine, and has ultimately landed her in Brooklyn, N.Y. “I think I’ve found a home in providing these WHY[PJPWH[VY` Ă„STTHRPUN tools to young people,â€? the 2001 Ramona High School graduate said. Gwizdak serves as education director of a small organization called Reel Works that helps youths from under-served neighborhoods by teaching them how to create a documentary. The youths, mostly high school-aged, are paired with a profesZPVUHS Ă„STTHRLY ;OL students learn everything from how to operate a camera to developing a story structure that will engage audiences.

school Gwizdak worked as a freelance producer for the Public Broadcast System (PBS), creating feature-length documentaries on hot topics in the >HZOPUN[VU + * 4HY`land area. She enjoyed the work and said that at the end of a project she felt a lot of empathy and understanding for all sides of the issue. “That was a really helpful process for me,� she noted. Although she loved freelancing, Gwizdak said she needed a permanent job. Her search took her to Reel Works in August 2012. “Ideally I love working collaboratively with young people,� she said. “They teach so much.� While teenagers are often seen as troublemakers, Gwizdak said, “I see the total opposite. Couple seeks key to locksmith company’s lasting success By JESSICA KING Something old will soon become new again on Main Street as a threedecade-old business opens under new ownership. Longtime Ramona residents Rheynard Morgan and his wife, Mary, are the third owners of Ramona Locksmith Inc. since 1976. This Saturday, they will hold a grand opening celebration with free food and other giveaways at the business’ new 1,700-square-foot storefront on the backside

of the Day Promenade Building at 850 Main St. The couple plans to run a full service commercial and residential locksmith business from the site, with Mary doing the bookkeeping and Rheynard handling the service end. The new storefront will also house the couple’s previously home-based company, San Diego Door & Hardware. Since 2002, Rheynard has offered commercial doorframe and hardware services under the San Diego Door & Hard-

ware name, often crossing paths and purchasing items from Ramona Locksmith’s previous owner, Gordon Schenck. Last year, Schenck — plagued by illness and eager to move to Oregon to be with family — mentioned his intentions to sell the business in passing, and the two men struck a deal. Rheynard said he couldn’t pay Schenck top dollar but he could promise to keep the business locally owned and involved in supporting the community. “There was a time when Ramona Locksmith got a bad name because Gordon got ill and couldn’t be there for his customers the way he needed to be,” said Rheynard. “He just wasn’t up for it after he got sick. But we’re going to change all that.” Rheynard said he has no plans to try to “steal” business away from other businesses in town but is LHNLY [V ÄSS HU` NHWZ MVY items and services for which Ramonans currently have to go down the hill. “My goal is not to drive business away from them

Florist moves to new Main Street address By JESSICA KING When Sun Valley Florist owner Frankie Berkley Newberg learned in January that her next-door neighbor Napa Auto Parts had purchased her space along Main Street, shutting down the business she has built up for the past three years was not an option. Instead she made lemons out of lemonade and found a new space, which she moved into over the weekend. Sun Valley Florist is now located in the Affordable Treasures building at 677 Main St., across the street and one block east of Sun Valley’s old space at 758 Main St. Despite a lot of packing and unpacking, the business did not go on hiatus.

“There is absolutely nothing that is going to keep us from doing our job,” said Berkley Newberg, who has 45 years of industry experience, including time spent as a designer for events held at Opryland Hotel in Nashville. Executive director considers his job a ‘grand opportunity’

D

r. Robert Argyelan is executive director of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce. A chiroprac[VY ^P[O H IHJRNYV\UK PU Ä UL HY[Z Argyelan has a lengthy list of accomplishments in professional, community and cultural developments. Originally from New Jersey, “just a subway ride from Manhattan,” Argyelan was exposed early to the museums and the culture of New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from ;I% 9F9 Pratt Institute and a 8I>P<C8E Master of Arts from New Jersey City University where he taught in the Fine Arts Department for 10 years. He obtained a grant to create a Department of Cultural Affairs for Jersey City, where he served as deputy director for 15 years. He returned to college to earn a second bachelor’s degree and then his doctorate of chiropractic degree before moving to San Diego in January 1991. He opened a private chiropractic practice in El Cajon. Among his involvement in civic and professional organizations was chairing El Cajon’s Community Development Corporation, where he worked to develop the downtown business corridor by creating façade improvement programs, sign ordinances, property enhancements and special events to attract visitors. In 1999 Argyelan moved to Ramona with his wife, Jennifer, daughter Dylan, and son Matthew and shortly after was elected to the San Diego Country Estates Association Board. He became chamber executive director in November 2013.

What motivated you to seek the executive director position for Ramona Chamber of Commerce? In all honesty, I looked at the position as a grand opportunity to be part of making Ramona even better than it already is. The town has such a tremendous quality of life with great schools, wide open spaces, a solid core of businesses, a growing wine industry, a tradition of equestrian activities, and a growing culture of art and music. Having worked with communities in creating economic improvements while implementing cultural programming, I saw the chamber as a leader that could serve the people of Ramona and its businesses. It could do so by working to develop and implement efforts that serve to bring about a renaissance of ideas and initiatives that restore economic viability while maintaining its rural traditions. I’m excited now to be in a position to help guide the chamber in its leadership role and to work with its board of directors and many volunteers to build collaborative efforts to achieve our common goals and realize Ramona’s amazing potential to be the absolute best place to live and work in San Diego County. Why do you like living in Ramona? For me, there are many reasons. I like the recreational opportunities. My daughter can trail ride her horse or compete in a gymkhana, my wife has miles of trails to hike, and my son can grow creatively in a wonderful music community. During the summer we have a blast with friends at the concerts in Ramona Oaks Park and I’m hoping that soon we will be going to “Music on Main,� listening to the singers and songwriters of Ramona. Longtime gallery artist Donna Gwinn, who died in December, was known for her peaceful landscape oil paintings. “Donna was always a popular artist, and many would stop by the gallery to purchase her paintings over the years,� said photographer Aletha McKenzie, a gallery member. “Donna was loved by her peers at the gallery and will be greatly missed.� Gwinn’s husband, Orval, said his wife, born in New Jersey in 1935, painted since she was a girl and took many art

I have never seen water running or even around this area, but I have many more trail miles that I need to discover. Most trail tread is loose sand covering hard pack, and, if you’ve never ridden in the desert and have a barefoot horse, pay attention to her feet often. The sand acts like a huge ÄSL NYPUKPUN H^H` OVVM THterial and your horses’ feet can become sore and even raw. Cricket is barefoot, so I pay close attention as I ride with her through the sand. Desert cactus can be a hazard to your horse’s legs so perform a good check upon returning to camp after each ride. Most look like little white hairs, so really look to assure you KVU»[ NL[ OVTL HUK ÄUK H sore or infected leg days later. As with any desert camp and riding experience, be prepared for anything. The

trick is layers of clothing that are easy to remove or add while mounted, and layers of blankets that you can add or throw off in the middle of the dark night. Weather can change in the desert in 10 minutes or less any time, day or night, so please don’t go for the weekend that you heard is supposed to have “nice” weather solely under that assumption. Be prepared every single time you visit. I often think to myself, “Camp is far from home, far from anything. I always take two extra feedings for her, at least. What if I get stuck down there due to weather or vehicle problems? There is no hay store around the corner. There are wa-

Reminiscing and looking into the future By JOHN RAJCIC Possibly some of your octogenarian and older readers would like to reminisce with me and look into the future. Centuries ago and at some time thereafter, the information that came off the printing press was considered true and gospel. To a great extent, I believe, some people look upon the information that comes via the Internet in the same light. Today as never before it seems someone is trying to sell you something 24/7, including their ideology and world view. Numbers and data can be tortured to confess almost anything. It’s axiomatic that we check and recheck our sources for valid information. It seems like today one must look upon what appears to be evidence or valid information as circumstantial.

We octogenarians got most of our news from the daily press, ABC, NBC and CBS. Those Philco or Stewart Warner radios were a great source of information, entertainment and the news. A “blogâ€? ^HZ UV[ L]LU H Ă„NTLU[ VM our imagination. Cell phones were not as surprising when they came on the scene. They were merely an improvement on Dick Tracy’s wrist radio. As an aside, my wife, Connie, says, â€?we never would have gotten married if we had cell phones 60 years ago.â€? She asked me for change to use the telephone. I touched her hand and we were married a few weeks later. The moon landing was awesome, but merely Buck Rogers in his rocket ship. The news at one time was 10 to 15 minutes long. Today it is 24/7. I can still hear Lowell Thomas on the radio. â€?Good evening

Tennis team starts season with two victories By BILL TAMBURRNIO The Bulldog tennis team opened the season with a 15-3 victory over Sage Creek High School at Riviera Oaks Resort and Racquet Club and then went on the road to beat Mission Hills High School 14-4. Edwards noted that senior Courtney Ford shouldn’t be overlooked as one of the top girls sprinters, although Ford is also expected to score points in the long jump. “She’s coming into this season more in shape than she has been,â€? said Edwards. Sophomore Perla Cruz will likely be one of Ra-

mona’s top girls distance runners. The girls distance runners will also include junior Anna Sundrud, a transfer from Colorado who participated on the Bulldogs’ cross country team earlier this school year. Senior Kara Banegas will likely highlight Ramona’s shot put and discus throws for the girls. “She looks to be strong, in the top three in the league, in both of those,â€? Edwards said. “My JV team is basically my freshman team,â€? Klauda said. Last year’s Ramona varsity included four seniors, two of whom were starters. Both of those starters were outside hitters, so this year senior Cody Kealy moves from right side hitter while junior Davis Windes becomes a starter. Senior Lance Stickney returns as a starting middle blocker and senior Jake McLaughlin is back as Ramona’s libero. Ramona’s other returning starter is junior setter Isaiah Spieker. Senior Levi Vermeulen, a reserve middle blocker last year, is now the starting right side hitter. Trevor Johnson, a junior who was a mid-season callup from the 2013 JV squad, is Ramona’s other starting middle blocker. Three reserves with no previous varsity experience round out Klauda’s squad. Juniors Taylor Holas and Mason Pierce, both of whom spent all of 2013 on junior varsity, are defensive specialists.
