Rather than to recruit students into the military, the program's primary goal is to create solid citizens, Ernst told Ramona <UPĂ„LK :JOVVS +PZ[YPJ[ [Y\Z[LLZ H[ [OL meeting. "Community service is what we really want the kids to get when they leave the program," he said. Ramona High Principal Chris King commented on the day-to-day impact NJROTC students have on campus, "the sense of service and the impacts on the culture of the school." "We just couldn't exist as a school the way we do without them," King said. Participating in the program has its advantages for those planning to enter the military. Those who complete at least three years in the high school program enter the Navy as an E-3 and receive about $500 a month more in pay, said Ernst. If they go into another branch of the military, they enter as an E-2 and also receive a higher salary, he added. )LJH\ZL 9HTVUH Z \UP[ PZ H +PZ[PUguished Unit, Ernst can nominate three

DANGER!

Rattlesnakes! Not only are rattlesnakes a danger to people, they are also a danger to our pets.

Ramona’s rural areas provide a haven for rattlesnakes, and as the weather gets warmer, many of our pets will be in danger of being bitten. The first sign of a bite is usually swelling and pain in the bitten area, even though wounds may not be visible. Dogs are most often bitten on the muzzle or a rear leg, while cats are often bitten on the front leg. Snakebites are a true emergency and you should seek immediate veterinary care for your pet if you suspect it has been bitten. At the time of their examination, the veterinarian will evaluate your pet and offer treatment recommendations which may include fluid therapy, antibiotics, pain management, and Antivenin. Adobe Animal Hospital offers rattlesnake vaccination for dogs that are at high risk for being bitten. For more information on this service, please call us and schedule an appointment with one of our doctors today. Donations save one Light of the Lamb parcel from public auction By KAREN BRAINARD Light of the Lamb Ministries was able to save one of its two parcels just before the county's public auction sale of tax-defaulted properties on March 24. Pastor Mark Baker said that thanks to donations and extra work in his auto repair business, he was able to pay the back taxes on the church parcel. The intercessory ministry is at 324 Seventh St. and offers

shelter and aid to the homeless. Among the donations was $427 from homeless individuals, Baker said. "We're moving forward. We're going to continue here," he said. Baker paid approximately $11,000 in back taxes and fees for the church parcel, said Chad Ward, a Ramona resident who began helping him just before the sale. The other parcel went on the

auction block and was purchased in a credit sale for the minimum bid of $115,000, according to the county treasurer [H_ JVSSLJ[VY Z VMĂ„JL The buyer, Ignacio Escutia from the Lake Forest area, has until April 24 to pay the balance, said Ken Jones with the [H_ JVSSLJ[VY Z VMĂ„JL 0M OL KVLZ not, the property goes into default. Ward said he and his association are donating their services to Light of the Lamb.

School district seeks online feedback on calendar proposals for 2016-17 Ramona school district is in the early stages of developing its calendar for the 2016-17 school year and is asking the community to help choose between two proposals. The district's 2016-17 Instructional Calendar Survey is on the district's website, www.ramonausd.net, under "District Headlines" on the left side. Ten to compete for Miss Ramona, Teen Miss crowns By KAREN BRAINARD

group of 10 young women are busy practicing their speeches, interviewing skills, opening dance routine, and how they walk and present themselves in preparation for this year's Miss Ramona and Teen Miss Ramona Scholarship Pageant on April 11. The event, open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, 421 Aqua Lane, with a "Back to the '50s" theme. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and may be purchased from contestants or at the door. Among those working with the girls are current Miss Ramona Courtney Ford and Teen Miss Ramona Elizabeth Bowersox. "It's bittersweet," Ford said about her reign ending, but added that it's time for other girls to experience what she has this year. "You want to give them the life-changing experience," said Bowersox, explaining that she has grown in character and come out of her shell. Four are competing for the Miss Ramona title, open to females ages 17 to 25: Grace Berry, Allison Gaither, Shannon Huff and Shannon Singleton. The Teen Miss category for 13- to 16-year-olds has attracted six contestants: Ashley Dominguez, Aixa Garcia-Cedillo, Megan Kelly, MacKenzie Nolan, Anna Simons and Ciara Webb-Martin. Pageant Executive Director Jill Fleming emphasizes that the event is not a beauty pageant but a youth ambassadors program where the winners represent their community at a variety of events and volunteer their OLSW HSS [OL ^OPSL NHPUPUN JVUĂ„KLUJL W\ISPJ ZWLHRing experience, job interviewing skills, and learning about giving back. Their job, she said, is about "making a difference, not strictly about looking pretty." Wearing the sash and crown at events empowers them, said Fleming, and it is the directors' hope that once those elements are gone, the girls will stay involved in their community.

Scouts ask for community support to help HiCaliber Horse Rescue Members of Ramona Girl Scout Junior Troop 8827 are working on their Bronze Award, the highest award that girls their age can earn, and they need the community's support. As part of their project, they are accepting donations of new and used horse supplies. All donations will be delivered by the troop to HiCaliber Horse Rescue in Valley Center on April 20. HiCaliber rehabilitates and re-homes horses from neglected situations. "By delivering donations, we are helping HiCaliber to feed and house more horses," the Scouts said in their request for community support. "We have chosen HiCaliber Horse Rescue because we have seen the difference that they make in horses' lives. It is sad to see a horse, or any animal, suffer due to neglect." The Scouts said they are looking forward to presenting HiCaliber with the donations they collect. "Any help you, or any horse friends could provide to this cause, would be

OPINION

Attend board meetings, hear what is not said By JOHN RAJCIC Ramona Sentinel is to be complimented for "covering" school board meetings. The printed press in our community remains important in informing the community of actions taken by the school board, particularly because other than employees there often are only one or two other people at a board meeting. I believe the Sentinel article on March 25 regarding the vote on the budget is incomplete. The 3-2 vote approving the budget was a very “honestâ€? factual vote. The board, because of legal constraints, was called upon to vote on a "preliminary" budget before YL]LU\LZ ^LYL KLĂ„ UP[L ;V NL[ H UVU X\HSPĂ„ LK UV KLĂ„ JP[ I\KNL[ ^P[O [OL RUV^U YL]LU\L PUMVYTH[PVU H[ [OL [PTL ^V\SK OH]L YLX\PYLK ZPNUPĂ„ JHU[ ZHSHY` HUK VY ILULĂ„ [ YLK\J[PVUZ ILMVYL H UVU X\HSPĂ„ LK budget could be adopted. It is not the board action that "saved the day." It was the governor and the passage of Prop. 30 with concomitant income tax and sales tax increases. The Prop. 30 income tax increase sunsets in 2018 and the sales tax increase sunsets in 2016. Then what? Declining enrollment will also bring about expenditure reductions. At this time, there is too much reliance on the M\[\YL NYV^[O VM [OL Z[H[L LJVUVT` HUK Z\IZLX\LU[ school revenue increases. Letters School district presents crafty calendar survey 9HTVUH <UPĂ„ LK :JOVVS +PZ[YPJ[ PZ H[ tempting to push the school start date to the middle of August once again beginning in the 2016-17 school year. A very crafty Draft I and II proposal seeking input on the earlier start date is currently posted on the RUSD website. The survey appropriately asks for input on what is liked and disliked about both proposals, however at the end of the survey you are asked to choose which draft you like better. There's no option to select neither. Is this by design so it can be reported that a larger percentage favored one over the other to justify approval? It is not explained why the proposed change is sought from the current start date of the last week of August. Why do we want to extend a week or more in hot classrooms that do not have A/C for our students? For those that do have A/C, it's another week or more of higher electricity costs. Physical education/outside activity is limited as well. 9<:+ JSHPTZ [OPZ PZ UV[ Ă„ UHS HUK PZ just a draft seeking input. If that is the case, why not post a draft that mirrors

W inery – Salerno Winery

G U I D E

Salerno Winery is a small family owned boutique winery. Our first vintage was 2002. Our historic adobe ranch house overlooks the hills of Ramona at elevations above 1,500 feet. Rich soils and a unique micro-climate yields premium grapes. This area has been recognized with it’s own appellation, “Ramona Valley. Our vineyards yield wines of extraordinary depth and character. Herman Salerno, the proprietor, has been making wine for more than 25 years as a wine aficionado, winning personal awards in the wine making world since 1988. He uses traditional old world hand-crafted methods to produce premium wines.

April is Autism Awareness Month and Ramona Fitness Center will be supporting the Light it Up Blue Campaign all month. What is World Autism Awareness Day and Light It Up Blue? The United Nations in 2007 adopted World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), celebrated each year on April 2, to shine a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis. Autism is one of only three health issues the United Nations recognizes with its own day. WAAD activities increase awareness of autism and

impart information about the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. Additionally, it celebrates the unique talents and skills of persons with autism around the world. Autism Speaks, an autism advocacy organization founded in 2005 to sponsor autism research and conduct awareness and outreach activities, celebrates WAAD with its international Light It Up Blue Campaign. Thousands of iconic landmarks, communities, businesses and homes across the globe shine bright blue lights in honor of the millions of individ-

uals and families affected by autism. Ramona Fitness Center will donate 100 percent of all collected enrollment fees in April to Autism Speaks, says an announcement from the center. Donations also may be made through the center's website, raTVUHÄ[ULZZ JVT In addition, Ramona Fitness Center at 558 Main St. will host a Zumba fundraiser on Saturday, April 18, at 3 p.m. All ages are welcome and donations will be accepted. For more information, visit the center's website or call the center at 760789-3500.

contacted the borrower or tried with due diligence to contact the borrower as required by California Civil Code 2923.5. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
