Rattlesnakes!

Not only are rattlesnakes a danger to people, they are also a danger to our pets. Ramona’s rural areas provide a haven for rattlesnakes, and as the weather gets warmer, many of our pets will be in danger of being bitten. The first sign of a bite is usually swelling and pain in the bitten area, even though wounds may not be visible. Dogs are most often bitten on the muzzle or a rear leg, while cats are often bitten on the front leg. Snakebites are a true emergency and you should seek immediate veterinary care for your pet if you suspect it has been bitten. At the time of their examination, the veterinarian will evaluate your pet and offer treatment recommendations which may include fluid therapy, antibiotics, pain management, and Antivenin. Adobe Animal Hospital offers rattlesnake vaccination for dogs that are at high risk for being bitten. For more information on this service, please call us and schedule an appointment with one of our doctors today.

Congregation plans to break ground on nine-acre campus by end of year Ramona Gateway Enhancement Fund started to maintain and improve monument property The nine acres behind the Welcome to Ramona Monument at the corner of Route 67 and Highland Valley Road is the future home of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church. Since the county's November approval of its building plans, Spirit of Joy has moved forward with its plans for those nine acres and in early March launched its "Glorious Unfolding" capital fundraising campaign. The congregation hopes to break ground by the end of the year. Because of the prominent building site, many different stakeholders over the past 10 years have reviewed and critiqued the new church plans. The result, said church leaders, "is a well laid out campus plan with beautifully designed buildings and completely installed landscaping, including over 200 trees, paths, a rose garden and

taining the prominent and visible corner. Because the Welcome to Ramona Monument sits on a triangle of county-owned land, Spirit of Joy inaugurated a special fund to ÄUHUJL VUNVPUN THPUtenance and improvement of the monument property separate from its own building campaign. This fund, called the Ramona Gateway Enhancement Fund, will be used in collaboration with the Ramona Trails Association and other interested stakeholders to improve

Spirit of Joy invites the community to review the plans, including architectural models and layout, slide show, and video, at sojchurch.com/ newhome. Spotlight on Local | Businesses Showroom addition catching eyes at Kitchen Barn By KAREN BRAINARD A new addition to the showroom of Kitchen Barn is catching the eyes of passers-by and bringing back memories for owner Matt Taft. The 1937 Magic Chef oven and stove is the same one that Matt Taft grew up with in his childhood home in Bonita, but it had not been in the family's possession for 30 years. "It is in impeccable condition," said Matt's wife, Tracy. Displayed at the front of the showroom in a country farmhouse kitchen setting, the shiny white antique appliance stayed in Matt's childhood home

when his mother sold it 30 years ago. The buyers had requested the Magic Chef remain with the house, but when they hired Matt a couple of years ago to remodel the kitchen, they gave him the oven. "And then I called my mom," said Matt. "Surprised her with the old stove. She hadn't had it for 30 years." Among its features are six burners, two ovens, a warmer and a broiler. The Tafts opened their Kitchen Barn showroom in 2010, gradually adding kitchen displays. Matt has 30 years of experience in cabinetry. "We are basically concept to completion," said

Matthews to serve as team vet at FEI World Cup of his that he became connected with the organizers of an international show jumping event in China and was asked to prepare jumpers for the competition in Beijing. That was in 2013 and his work continues there. Last year Matthews went to China three times. "Last year we (he and Robin) started getting more comfortable with China and did a little more vacationing," he said. For his birthday, they visited Shanghai. By KAREN BRAINARD When top show jumpers from around the world gather to compete in the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) World Cup next week in Las Vegas, a Ramona veterinarian will be right there, participating as a team vet. Dr. Jon Matthews, owner of Matthews Equine Services Inc., is awed that he will be attending a World Cup with FEI team vet credentials. "It's an amazing story," he said of how he went from a small-town vet to one sought in the international equestrian world. Matthews has made a name for himself by creating a form of diagnostic acupuncture that has successfully treated horses, especially jumpers and racehorses. At the World Cup, April 15 to 19, he will be the team vet for New Zealand. One of his clients is Katie Laurie of New Zealand whose horses, Kiwi Iron Mark and Frangipanne De Toxandria, will be competing in the World Cup and are currently boarded in Bonsall. Matthews said he has been working on Kiwi Iron Mark for about six weeks. For the New Zealand warmblood, Matthews has been using acupuncture, chiropractic and stem cell treat-

and that's how he met the New Zealand citizen. "They're a top show jumper family in the world," Matthews said. Life has really become interesting, he noted. "It's a lot more exciting. I really kind of enjoy the challenge and I really enjoy working on that quality of horse." Matthews said he enjoys the dichotomy of working with horses internationally and locally. "Around here it's pretty much backyard horses," said Matthews, who describes himself as a "small-town guy."

Last year's World Cup in France featured another patient of Matthews — Casseur De Prix competing for the United States team.

Noting that next year's summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Matthews said: "We've got several horses that are Olympic horses from different countries so that is exciting." His equine services are taking him and his wife, Robin, to various countries. This year they will be going to Germany twice, he said, and they have been to China several times. Applications for ag conservation program ends April 30 The county's application period for agricultural property owners to participate in its Purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easement (PACE) program will end on April 30. The PACE program is intended to promote the long-term preservation of agriculture and is based on the

framework of what is traditionally referred to as a Purchase of Development Rights program, according to the county. Under the PACE program, willing agricultural property owners are compensated for placing a perpetual easement on their agricultural

property that limits future uses and extinguishes future development potential. For more information, call 858505-6677, email AgConservation@ sdcounty.ca.gov, or visit www. sandiegocounty.gov/pds/advance/ PACE.html.

The candidates focus on reducing association costs at the expense of association members is misplaced, at best. Ramona High School's robotics team, one of the smallest groups at the FIRST Robotics Competition, "played with the big boys and surprised everyone with what we could do," team adviser Christine Hill said. The ninth annual regional competition, held in Valley View Casino Center in downtown San Diego April 2 through 4, attracted teams from all over the world, said Hill, who also teaches math at Ramona High. The theme of this year's FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was "Recycle Rush." Ramona's team, Neo-Tech, may have had only 10 members, but that didn't stop the teens from representing their community well, said Hill. "These students have worked countless hours with little or no resources, recycled old parts, got very creative and designed the 'Hugger Bot,'" Hill said. "Hugger Bot started as the underdog, but quickly showed what it could do." The Ramona team started at the bottom of the 58 teams competing and worked its way to the top eight. Top-ranked teams approached Ramona to form an alliance.

"We were very excited to be considered, but in true RHS fashion we scored major points in our last heat, putting us PU H WVZP[PVU [V IL PU [OL Ă„UHSZ ZHPK Hill. "The heats are run with three team alliances. Our alliance came in seventh overall, and the 'little Ramona team' Neo-Tech came in 11th overall." FIRST's mission is "to show students of every age that science, technology and problem-solving are not only fun and rewarding, but are proven paths to successful careers and a bright future for us all." Teams receive the rules of the game and purchase a starter kit in January. Each team must complete its robot in six weeks, when the robots are "bagged and tagged." If adjustments are needed, they don't take place until the regional competition. Members of this year's Ramona team are Ben Klingner, Joseph Flynn, Rye Cassan, Rhett Cassan, Erik Hietala, Kaitlin Box, Jason Dohm, Justen Richmond, Sarah Wheeler and Joseph Jennings. "We are expanding robotics in Ramona," said Hill. "FIRST is interested in getting students involved at all grade levels, and we hope that we can encourage

Cycle Dawgs persevere in Castaic Lake race By KAREN BRAINARD "Perseverance" was the word head coach Robert Grace used to describe the Ramona High School Cycle Dawgs mountain bike competition in Castaic Lake. +LZWP[L H ÅH[ [PYL IYVken chain, other mechanical problems and hydration issues, the team saw MV\Y [VW ÄUPZOLZ HUK maintained its seventh overall place out of the 14 teams in Division 1. Cycle Dawg team parent Caron Cappos said maintaining seventh place is fantastic, "considering we're probably the smallest D1 team." This weekend the Cycle Dawgs will compete in the SoCal High School Cycling League's "Cruise the Keys" at the Keyesville Special Recreation Area at Lake Isabella. "We're looking at some amazing competition ahead of us," said Grace. Gibson's time put her 1:20 behind the last-place varsity girl, Grace said. In the boys varsity race, Jaron Cappos pulled off H ÄM[O WSHJL ÄUPZO L]LU though the chain on his bike fell off 100 yards

Volleyball plays San Marcos and Escondido this week By NANCY SAPPER Ramona High School boys volleyball team faced two tough programs the week before spring break and came away 0-2 for their efforts. Early in the week, the Bulldogs traveled to Mt. Carmel where the Sundevils defeated Ramona's varsity squad in three consecutive games 25-21, 25-17, 25-10. Mt. Carmel’s team won CIF Division I last year with a roster of nearly all juniors and sophomores, positioning the team for a strong season this year. The team has nine seniors on court this year and a good shot at back-to-back championships. The Bulldogs kept it close in the third game and thought they may have a shot at a fourth. With

the score Bulldogs 10, Sundevils 13, Mt. Carmel’s captain caught ÄYL Q\TW ZLY]PUN /L ZLY]LK V\[ the game, ripping off 12 points in a row and ending the Bulldogs’ hopes of a fourth game in the best VM Ä]L ZLYPLZ ¸>L WSH`LK ^LSS [OL ÄYZ[ sets but we lost in three straight," said coach Jeff Klauda. "Davis Windes played very well and recorded 10 kills and two blocks. Isaiah Spieker recorded 13 assists and two blocks and played well especially considering he missed the previous day with an illness.” Ramona's junior varsity team, which plays best of three, lost in two sets to the Mt. Carmel squad. Ramona’s novice team played its best game of the year to date and won the second set in the match but also lost in three.

Later in the week the Bulldogs played Canyon Crest Academy. “Sometimes you're just off as a team,” said Klauda. “It wasn't from a lack of effort or heart. We were in every set and had leads in the last three sets, but we were unable to pull it out.” The team lost in four: 21-25, 2521, 25-27, 20-25. Spieker had 26 assists in the match and the team’s middle blockers had their best games of the season statistically.
