'Water guy'
As water operations superintendent, his responsibilities include JV]LYPUN Ă„LSK VWLYH[PVUZ from the meter reading staff to the utility staff to systems operators in regards to bringing water into the community and moving it throughout to end users. He also oversees some of the maintenance staff and some electrical operations. For him, the most enjoyable part of the job was the satisfaction that "we accomplished our goal for the day, the week or the month, in that we delivered good quality water to our customers and we did the best job we could for them." One of his challenges when he became the superintendent was adjusting to the staff's needs and day-to-day activities. "Probably the biggest challenge was just making sure that all departments and all the staff is working well and have the same goal," he said. Brean said he has been spending quite a bit of time on the new pipeline along San Vicente Road as the current water main needs to be relocated in certain spots to accommodate for construction of the realigned roadway. The pipeline project, he said, "is very much an operational challenge for us and coordinating how we're going to keep water or how we're going to keep the current pipeline in service as much as possible while the construction is going on. So there's been a lot of coordination and dealing with that." Typically, Brean said, he meets with the San Vicente Road construction contractor once a week. Customers who have had to experience some short water shutdowns have been understanding, he said. His retirement will not affect the pipeline coordination, Brean said, as

district contract engineer Ricardo Soto is the project manager. Another accomplishment during Brean's watch was the Poway Pump Station Secondary Power Source. Completed in November 2014, the project added natural gas to operate the pumps that bring water up the hill to Ramona. "There were plenty of players in that," said Brean. "I think it's a good idea. After the '07 Ă„YL VUL VM [OL PTWVYtant things was to get that secondary source of power to provide the pumps to enable to run in the event of a power outage. That was some[OPUN 0 ^HZ KLĂ„UP[LS` looking forward to getting into place." Now, he's looking forward to retirement and having some time for himself. Brean said he enjoys doing a lot of different things. "But at the same time, you know, my wife's going to have me do the household chores so I'm kind of looking forward to that," he chuckled. His wife, Melissa, has just gone back to work full time, Brean explained, so he will be taking care of household activities. The Breans have two daughters: Brooke, 21, who attends Cal State San Marcos University, and Brenna, 18, a student at Grossmont College. "They're excited for me," he said. Asked whether he'll miss anything about the job, Brean replied, "I'm going to miss the guys. And the challenges. I'll KLĂ„UP[LS` TPZZ [OL N\`Z He'll also miss the customers. "When I say 'customers,' for me it's just growing up in this town and just seeing people at the store...So everybody knows me: 'Oh yeah, you're the water guy.'"

The 2004 loan and matching state funds paid for two new schools and improvements at other schools, including a twostory building at the middle school. "There are plenty of
things that need to be done in the district," he said, commenting that he was in a meeting room that leaked about a month ago. Teacher Cori McDonald, teachers union president, agreed but said, "I understand there's arguments for all of these, and I applaud that you guys are looking into all the different options." Dawn Perfect, board president, prefers the option that has escalating payments, but because of lower interest rates represents savings of about $360,000 a year compared to the current loan — "just because I don't want to see increased

The first sign of a bite is usually swelling and pain in the bitten area, even though wounds may not be visible. Dogs are most often bitten on the muzzle or a rear leg, while cats are often bitten on the front leg. Snakebites are a true emergency and you should seek immediate veterinary care for your pet if you suspect it has been bitten. At the time of their examination, the veterinarian will evaluate your pet and offer treatment recommendations which may include fluid therapy, antibiotics, pain management, and Antivenin. Adobe Animal Hospital offers rattlesnake vaccination for dogs that are at high risk for being bitten. For more information on this service, please call us and schedule an appointment with one of our doctors today. Ramona roots run deep for this teacher and coach By PIXIE SULSER Ramona native and 1998 Ramona High School graduate Cori McDonald describes herself as that “person growing up who always said they would never teach in Ramona, who would never come back to Ramona once they left. I was the kid who was going to get out of this town. My grandpa used to always tell me, ‘don’t ever say never’... He was right.” Her roots run deep, both in the Ramona community and in the school district. It all started in the late 1940s when her great-grandparents moved to Ramona to lead Grace Community Church. While her greatgrandfather, Grant McDonald, headed up the church, her great-grand-

Later, Esther’s son, Glae McDonald, served as principal of Ramona Elementary while, his wife, Jean, taught art and later became the school counselor. Their son, Cori’s father, worked for Ramona <UPÄLK :JOVVS +PZ[YPJ[ in the bus barn as a mechanic, making her a fourth generation district employee. Although she grew up surrounded by educators, Cori didn’t plan to be a teacher. “I always knew I wanted to do something with kids, but I wasn’t sure what," she said. before transitioning to the math department at her old stomping grounds, Ramona High School. The transition from the middle school to the high school had actually already started for Cori when she joined the Ramona High softball coaching staff a couple of years before becoming a teacher on campus. The move brought her full circle in a sense. “My freshman year on varsity softball was Antoniette Rodriguez’s ÄYZ[ `LHY HZ ]HYZP[` JVHJO She and Robin Brainard started their softball legacy with my freshmen class. Now, I am the varsity coach and they are my assistants. We laugh about that all the time.” Cori is in her sixth year of coaching at Ramona High and her third as the head varsity coach. So where is Cori McDonald now? Maybe a better question is, where isn’t she? Not only did she return to her alma mater to teach and to coach, but also to lead. As Region 9 representative, Cori spoke on what she has learned from her students. Her message centered on the power of relationships. “I truly believe that students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care," she said. "When the kids know you care about them, they are more apt to care about your class. That’s your in.” Her belief in the strength of relationships is also what drove her to run for the RTA presi-

I felt like if I was going to complain about the way things were, I should either ‘put up or shut up.’ Since being named president, I have really enjoyed seeing the big changes in the relationship with the district. It’s wonderful seeing us work together to do what’s right for kids.” Cori’s two-year presidential term is up this year, but she has plans to run again. “There are things I would still like to accomplish. I’m not done yet.”

Ramona Petsitters' clients are an assorted bunch By KAREN BRAINARD Wanda Brennan's clients come in all shapes and sizes. They make different sounds and some have medical needs. No matter. Despite their differences, she treats them all like family. "They just come and live with me," the Ramona Petsitters owner said of the dogs that visit her "Camp Wawa." While some pets — mostly dogs, cats and birds — may stay at her house for a few days when their owners are away, others come for the day or she goes to them. Aided by her sister Gaille Brennan, Wanda has also cared for llamas, horses, goats, chickens, pigs, ducks and tortoises. Pigs, Wanda said, are probably the smartest. "They're cool," she added. At her home in San Diego Country Estates, Wanda has even boarded a tortoise. "They do snore and hiss," she said of the 75-pound pet client. When the tortoise won't head to bed at night, Wanda has a trick — if she wears sparkly red toenail polish and runs backward, the tortoise will think it is seeing a bug and follow. Fortunately she doesn't have to do that too often. "Usually they put themselves to sleep," she said. One time the Brennan sisters, who are originally from Maine, babysat a couple of rescue ducks. "She rigged up a little swimming pool for them," Gaille said.
Business Short Mt. Woodson Golf Club will host the Ramona Chamber of Commerce mixer on Thursday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. All chamber members and guests are welcome at this networking opportunity that will feature a barbecue from Big Dev's Catering, coffee and dessert from Dunkin' Donuts, and a nohost bar featuring wines MYVT /H[Ă„LSK *YLLR 7HTV and Woof'n Rose wineries. Admission is $5 for chamber members and $10 for others. The golf club is at 16422 Woodson Drive.
A retired registered nurse, Wanda started her Petsitters business 4-1/2 years ago with help from Gaille. "This wouldn't even be a business without her help," Wanda said. Although Gaille jokingly described herself as the "lowly pooper-scooper," she holds a Ph.D as a psychotherapist. As the two sisters sat, each holding a small dog on her lap, Gaille realized she was giving her pet a belly rub while Wanda was giving a back massage. "It's more from your home to our home," Gail noted as to how they differ from kennels. "A lot of what we do is go to homes, feed during the day, give walks," Wanda explained. Sometimes the owners are away and sometimes they are just working a long day down the hill. For elderly dogs who don't like change, Wanda said it is often better for them to stay in their own home. They visit a home two to three times a day for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. If the owner is away, Wanda said they will do security checks and contact the owner if there are any problems at the house. They will even take pictures of the pets and text the owners, said Gaille. With her nursing background, Wanda said her business has a niche of providing care for pets who need medications. Many are diabetic dogs and cats. They also take pets to the veterinarian or groomer. "It is a full time job. We work seven

Going to vet for healthcare I'm going to the vet for my healthcare from now on. My cat Skippy has much superior healthcare when compared to mine, so I've decided to switch to the veterinarian myself. The reasons are clear, including the MHJ[ [OH[ ]L[Z HYL IVUH Ă„ KL KVJ[VYZ The vet always calls us after Skippy has been in for a visit to see if he is OK. My healthcare provider never calls me except for late payments. If Skippy needs a procedure, they just tell us and schedule it, never more than a day or two out. The fees are much lower for Skippy than for the same services for me, and the medication is cheaper, too. Even better, a special law crafted in Sacramento for doctor-assisted suicide is unnecessary at the vet. Reservations for the luncheon meeting are due April 24. The meeting will be in San Vicente Resort at 24157 San Vicente Road. Check-in and social time will be at 10:15 a.m, and the meeting will begin at 10:45. Guests are welcome. Jacob, a native San Diegan whose roots in the county run threegenerations deep, was re-elected supervisor for a historic sixth term in 2012. pose corruption and bring about a leadership overhaul at the San Diego/Imperial Counties chapter of the American Red Cross, she was interviewed by CBS News correspondent Mike Wallace and appeared on television's "60 Minutes." She was listed among the San Diego Press Club's distinguished "Headliners of the Year" for 2002. Bulldogs blast Escondido with 13-run inning Spikers win N`e Yi\Xbj j\m\e$^Xd\ cfj`e^ jki\Xb By JOE NAIMAN The CIF San Diego Section baseball record for most runs in an inning is 23, but the record book cutoff is 13 runs. Ramona High School's 2015 team thus earned a line at the bottom of the record book by scoring 13 runs in the sixth inning against Escondido. "That was just good that we continued to play the game the right way and kept competing," said coach Dean Welch. The 20-4 home win over the Cougars on April 6 also broke Ramona's seven-game losing streak and was one of two
games during the week for the Bulldogs, who lost a 2-1 contest to Rancho Bernardo on the Broncos' diamond April 8. "We had a good week competitively," Welch said. "We're learning how to win." The game against Rancho Bernardo concluded pre-league competition for the Bulldogs, whose three games with Fallbrook to open Valley League play include tomorrow's matchup in Fallbrook and whose three games against Mission Vista include a home contest Monday. "We're excited for league play and excit-
ed for the second half," Welch said. "It's probably going to be between us and Fallbrook and Oceanside for league." Fallbrook entered league competition with a 9-5 record. Oceanside Ă„UPZOLK P[Z WYL SLHN\L schedule at 6-7. Ramona brought a 4-10 record into league play. "Obviously we're disappointed," said Welch. "We haven't been in this situation in a long time, but we knew the preseason schedule was the toughest pre-season schedule we've ever had." The Bulldogs had a 3-2 record in the Hilltop-Lolita's Tournament, a 1-4 mark in the North County
Conference Tournament, and a showing of 0-4 in the Lions Tournament. "We felt we could have won many of those games," Welch said. "We have three seniors, so we're very young. It's been hard to get the pieces to mesh." Sophomore tacked jersey on wall as incentive to return By TERRY MONAHAN Special to the Sentinel It has been up on Jonna Rodriguez’s bedroom wall for months. The sophomore class homecoming princess at Ramona High couldn’t miss it each morning when she woke up and every night before going to sleep. Rodriguez’s softball jersey is the most important thing in her room, and it did not hang there because she was shocked to make the varsity as a freshman. Barbara Sue McWhorter Raifsnider
Ramona Sentinel
1950 – 2015 Barbara Sue McWhorter Raifsnider was born March 9,1950, in La Jolla, CA, and died March 13, 2015, in San Diego, CA. In her youth Barbara was a professional model and later a respected and loved ESL teacher who wrote books for Random House. Barbara loved her children, cats, art and beautiful things. She had a huge circle of close, devoted friends. She had a sensitive, gentle, kind, and loving nature with great strength, grace and a compassionate heart. She
reminded us of a Queen or someone else of royal blood. Barbara died of lung cancer. She never smoked or drank alcohol. She was a dedicated Vegan and exercised heartily and consistently. She was one year short of a relaxed retirement, had a year’s worth of sick leave and had happy plans for her bright new life. She had planned to paint, get her sister Venus’s art into galleries, and have time to do things she hadn’t done, while seeing more of her children and having the future experience of grandchildren. Her unexpected passing, even with the will to live right and with her precisely planned and delayed plans for her future, cause us to recall the poem that speaks to many of us: “Scatter ye rosebuds while ye may... as the day is late and changing. Barbara leaves husband, John; two children, Arend (Iryna) Raifsnider and Calixte (Ben) Raifsnider; and her stunned and closely knit siblings, Venus Catherine McWhorter Andrecht, Polly Jane
McWhorter Meyers, Jim Lange McWhorter, Arthur Allen (Mary Ellen) McWhorter, and Candy Ann McWhorter (Steve) Smiley. She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Jim McWhorter; nephew, Michael Meyers; and brother-in-law, Dr. Ron Meyers. We imagine Barbara traveling the vast skies and Universes with the brilliant stars and all the Wonders, but still‌there is a big hole in our family. We really, really miss her. We wish you Godspeed our dear Barbara. Go to: Facebook Ramona High Memorial to share thoughts of Barbara. Services will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 1:30 pm at Mesa College, San Diego. Donations can be made to Barbara’s Scholarship Fund, Contact/checks: Corinne Layton, ESL Program Chair-SDCE, Mid-City Campus, 3792 Fairmount Ave., San Diego, CA 92105. Two more league matches were scheduled for this week: at Fallbrook on April 14 and against Oceanside on April 16. Coach Michael Gainey said of the Fallbrook match: "From what I've been hearing from other coaches in our league, this will be one of our toughest matches of the season." Sophomore Justin Graf continues to garner medalist honors. In the 199-303 win against Orange Glen April 7 at San Vicente Golf Course, Graf was the low scorer with a par 36. "The team continues to play well and the scores in league play are showing it," said Gainey. April 8 saw a home match against league opponent Valley Center. In the 201-211 Ramona victory, Graf shared medalist honors with teammate David Hall. Both shot 68. "Justin is consistently bringing in low scores and is working hard to maintain his No.1 spot on the team," said Gainey. The Bulldog golf team was also scheduled to play a non-league match at home against Steele Canyon on April 15. —Karen Brainard

B20 should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. By KAREN BRAINARD Ramona Senior Center is partnering with Meals on Wheels of America, a move that senior center Director Ray Cardona ZHPK ZOV\SK IL Ă„UHUJPHSS` ILULĂ„JPHS "What this does for us is open up our world to apply for better, bigger grants," said Cardona. The center will still be under the Meals on the Go umbrella with County of San Diego Aging and Independent Services, will still offer "outstanding" food, and will continue to ask for only a $4 lunch donation, he said. A representative from Meals on Wheels of America met with the senior center board in March, said Cardona, and talked about helping out with fundraising.
"I see nothing but good coming out of this," Cardona said. He is hoping the senior center will be able to obtain grants to replace its bus, which has 200,000 miles. "We really need a new bus," said Cardona. Additional funding could also be used to pay for gas as the senior center bus logs a lot of miles delivering meals to the homebound in areas that include Ramona, Pauma Valley, Warner Springs, and Los Coyotes Reservation. According to Cardona, they have almost met their maximum number of meals that they can deliver. More funding could help with delivering more meals to the homebound, he said.

A Ramona resident for 17 years, Zaffarano became involved with the equine community when her daughter, Katy, started taking riding lessons in Country Estates at age 9. Zaffarano became involved with the United States Pony Club, helping out at rallies and horse shows, and she eventually became the district
te Pony Club, as the Ramona Pony Club merged with San Vicente. She started taking lessons in dressage and jumping. "It is a great form of exercise and therapy for anyone who loves horses, and you have to love them because they are costly and are work, but so worth it," she said. "When the position became available for the equestrian manager, I put my application in and here I am." She, her assistant Angie Lancaster and the three-man crew of Gerardo Collazo, Tomas Abazan and Pedro Rodriquez "have been working very hard throughout these past years to keep all the common and
