Winter wins Don Diego Sculpture Award for ‘Whiskey Shooter’ By JOE NAIMAN San Diego County Fair’s Fine Art Show includes the Don Diego Award for a sculpture, and this year the award, which included a $250 cash prize, went to Ramona resident Jason Winter for his sculpture “Whiskey Shooter.” “I was honored to receive the award. I had no idea that I was going to receive it,” Winter said. A representative of the JV\U[` MHPY UV[PÄLK >PUter by telephone that he would be receiving an award and invited him to the awards ceremony. His name was not among the ÄYZ[ WSHJL ZLJVUK WSHJL and third-place recipients in the Sculptures class. Then came the announcements of special awards, and he learned that he had received the Don Diego Award. “I was really surprised and not expecting it at all,” he said. “I just wanted some exposure for my artwork.” The award is named af-

ter the late fair ambassador Don Diego. It is the second highest possible award for sculptures, behind Best of Show for the 3-D division, which also includes ceramics and glass art.

“Whiskey Shooter” is a sculpture of a revolver rather than of whiskey shots, although the chambers are capable of holding whiskey bottles. When Winter initially

appeal to males. “I started to put my whiskey in it,” he said. “It will hold any 750 milliliter bottle you put in it.” Whiskey Shooter has the potential to rotate using a 12-volt motor that Winter obtained from an automotive junkyard. The cylinder and trigger of the revolver are made of hollow sheet metal while the hammer is the only part that used solid sheet metal. The handle is made of parota wood from Mexico and has an abalone inlay on the back. Winter spent between 40 and 50 hours working on the sculpture. A friend suggested that Winter enter the sculpture in the fair competition. “I looked up online what it took,” he said. ;OL ^HZ >PU[LY»Z ÄYZ[ entry in a county fair art show, but he had won

an award in the only other art show he entered. He entered a ceramic beer stein in a high school HY[ ZOV^ HUK ^VU ÄYZ[ place. That award included a scholarship to work with Native American artist Robert Freeman, and Winter learned how to etch metals from Freeman. Winter, 39, was born in Poway but moved to Ramona when was 1 year old and has lived here since. His family includes two sons and a daughter. He owns J. Winter Designs and has a shop in his home for his professional activity, which is primarily metal work but also includes some carpentry.

First Congregational Church volunteers participate in Corazón’s ‘Super Build’ By RITA EASTMAN For about 25 years, volunteers from First Congregational Church of Ramona have gathered together to participate in one of their most valued mission projects — providing a new home for families across the U.S. border. Working with other volunteers and through the Corazón build program, the congregation has been able to provide about 40 homes to deserving families who live in the Tijuana area. One or two houses per year have been built each year thanks to the 30 to 35 member volunteers who caravan to Mexico with hammers and tools in hand. On the day of the most recent build, First Congregational volunteers met at 5 a.m. in the church parking lot. Nine vehicles transported 33 volunteers to a central meeting spot where they were joined

by four other volunteer groups from Southern California for the Corazón “Super Build.” Four homes were constructed on the same day in various locations in Tijuana. Corazón is the parent organization that coordinates the builds. Sponsors such as First Congregational Church pay for the building materials and

Corazón determines the families who qualify for the homes, designates the location of the homes, and provides leaders who direct the volunteers. Corazón also ensures that a concrete slab is set in place and that materials purchased locally for the build are made available before the volunteers arrive. A two-room, 16-foot by 20-foot simple home, with a loft and kitchen counter, is completed in a matter of hours. Volunteers paint interior and exterior panels for the walls while others build the framework. After the walls go up, many hammers pound up above as the roof becomes a reality. Windows are installed, HUK HZ H ÄUHS [V\JO home-made curtains are hung, and a “Welcome” wreath adorns a brightly colored front door. At the end of the day, a grateful family re-

provide the labor. Members of the Mission Board at First Congregational Church host an annual dinner auction each year to raise enough money to sponsor each build. Volunteers who sign up for a build range from young teenagers to seasoned carpenters — all of whom are eager to share their time and talents.

ceives a key to their new home, and their lives are changed forever. Families who qualify for the new homes have earned this honor through their own volunteerism through Corazón. Often VUL ^PSS ÄUK MHTPS` TLTbers working alongside build volunteers. Although language can be a barrier, smiles say much and hearts are touched. Ramona First Congregational Church has an annual Corazón fundraising dinner and auction every August to raise the funds needed to build a home

for a family in need. This year’s dinner auction is scheduled for Aug. 8 in Pilgrim Hall at the church. There will be many auction items and homemade Mexican food. All are invited and tickets will be sold after church services beginning in July. Many local Ramona and Southern California merchants and attractions contribute to this cause. Ramona First Congregational Church thanks all of the businesses who continue to support this annual event.

Plans are under way for RHS Class of 1965 50-year reunion By JOY HUBBARD In 1965 the average cost of gas was about 31 cents per gallon. We used to pool our change and buy a gallon of gas so that we could go out and cruise Main Street. Ramona was smaller back then so we often included cruising other streets around town. Then we would stop in at the Dash-in Drivein for a 19-cent hamburger. We had great music to listen to: The Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, The Four Seasons, Bobby Vinton, the Supremes and the Dixie Cups. There really was not much to do in Ramona in 1965, but we did have the theater and Bulldog Hall (the local teen hangout). We could hang out with all our friends and listen to music and dance. Before graduation day all of the boys received a Draft Notice for induction into the military. Because of the Vietnam War the boys were reX\PYLK [V YLWVY[ MVY H WO`ZPJHS [V KL[LYTPUL Ä[ness for duty. It was a bittersweet time. It was the best of times and for some the worst of times. So here we are 50 years later — anticipating what is going to happen. Will there be a 50-year reunion? Who will be there? Will I recognize

anyone there? Will they recognize me? Will we have anything left to talk about? Will a 50-year reunion be enough to draw us all back to Ramona? The answer to all of those questions is a resounding YES. There will be a 50-year reunion for the graduating class of 1965. The class reunion is scheduled for Sept. 18, 19 and 20, so that it coincides with the All Alumni Reunion that is held annually. The reunion will start on Sept. 18 with a casual get-together where hamburgers will be served (probably costing more than 19 cents). The other reunion activities will include a visit and tour at the old high school and Wilson Gym, a golf tournament, and dining at the San Vicente Inn. And, yes, you will have loads of things to talk about: 50 years of life’s lessons, would‘a–should‘a done, regrets and do-overs. There is always so much more to share with your old friends while creating new memories with new-found friends. For RHS reunion details, please contact Joyanne DeClercq Hubbard at 602-692-1183 or Roz Thomas Britton at 310-720-5848. Ramona teenager Brandon Arthur placed second in both rounds of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series in Tooele, Utah, just weeks after taking third place in the series in Lake Elsinore. The 19-year-old heads to Glen Helen Raceway July 18 and 19 for rounds 9 and 10 in the series. While racers covet speed and pray for luck, the most sought-after attribute would have to be consistency, said a press release on rounds 7 and 8 in Utah. Brandon was said to be “perfectly consistent during the June 20 and 21 race event. Brandon, son of Susan and Todd Arthur, raced in the new Pro Lite truck that he and his father built in their HRT Motorsports shop in Ramona. They also built a Trophy Truck that Brandon races. “I’m a super proud dad, said Todd Arthur. “Since

connected ••••• to summer-saving ideas We use the most energy during the summer months. But you can do your part to save by running major appliances like clothes washers, dryers, and ovens before 11:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. Another tip is to set your air conditioner to 78˚, or use a fan instead. Using a room or ceiling fan can lower cooling costs by up to 90%. You’ll not only save money, but you’ll be helping us reduce the need to tap into more energy. And that’s good for our region and the planet. Connect with more energy-saving tips and programs at sdge.com/summer.
