The nonprofit organization, established a year ago to offer guidance and assistance to families of children fighting brain tumors or brain cancer, has expanded its mission to include children with any type of cancer. In September 2014, Lindsey and Brandon McMorran’s then 14-month-old daughter Peyton was

diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Ramona community rallied around the hometown couple, establishing a Go Fund Me page and the first Putting for Peyton golf tournament at San Vicente Golf Resort. “At that golf tournament, we promised that if she was good and she pulled through we would take that and push it forward and start something to help other families,” said Lindsey (Winkenbach) McMorran, a 2002 Ramona High School graduate. Brandon graduated from RHS in 2001. The third annual Putting for Peyton Golf Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 19, and will be about helping other children in similar situations, she said. 13th Street bridge update BY KAREN BRAINARD Delays continue for a proposed bridge over the Santa Maria Creek on 13th Street that would give residents north of Main Street easier access to the Ramona Library and downtown. Chris Hanger, capital improvements project manager for San Diego County, will provide the status of the bridge project to the Ramona Community Planning Group in the Ramona Library Community Room, 1275 Main St., on Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. Hanger presented an update to the planning group’s Transportation and Trails Subcommittee on July 26, telling members, “Still, after five years it’s in the preliminary engineering phase,” and explaining the challenges of working with and receiving approval from Caltrans. In July 2011, the county announced it had received a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Bridge Rehab and Replacement Program to construct a bridge and pave the rutted, dirt portion of 13th Street north of the library to Maple Street. Total estimate for the project was $10 million with funds to be issued in phases by Caltrans. The project is still in the first phase — environmental work and design. County Department of Public Works staff estimated in 2011 the bridge would be completed in six years. By June 2013, county staff reported there were issues with Caltrans on the design and predicted design would be completed by SEE BRIDGE, A26

Convention delegate experiences eye-opener Sanders backers had to fight to keep their seats BY KAREN BRAINARD After serving as a first-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention, Pete Beauregard, a Bernie Sanders supporter, returned home to Ramona ready to become more engaged in politics in hopes of bringing about change. At the convention, he said, not all was as it seemed on television. He said he and other delegates who were Sanders’ supporters had to literally fight to keep their seats, because the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign staff brought in Clinton supporters to fill them. He estimated that 35 to 40 percent of the California delegates were Sanders’ supporters, and said there were rumors people were paid to sit as Clinton supporters. If a delegate got up and left his seat vacant for long, possibly to get something to eat, “they would fill it,” said Beauregard. “It was all for the cameras,” he said, adding that was especially so when Clinton gave her acceptance speech. Beauregard said he was always

Beauregard served as a delegate to the convention. able to get his seat back, possibly because he was wearing his Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783 hat, but others could not, even after showing their credentials. At times, he said, it got a bit combative. “I think they didn’t want to mess with me,” said the Vietnam veteran. Beauregard, who was seen with his Ramona VFW hat in a televised shot on CNN, said he was treated differently because he was wearing

it. People came up, shook his hand and thanked him for his service. “It was kind of overwhelming,” he said. Beauregard said he was part of the rowdy crowd for Sanders, but often their chants were not picked up by the microphones. When they chanted a line such as “No more war” or “No TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership),” the rest of the crowd was instructed to respond with “Hillary” and would drown them

out, he said. According to Beauregard, the California/San Diego Bernie or Bust delegates inspired Sanders’ delegates from other states, such as Washington and Oregon, to follow their lead. Sanders often sat behind the California delegation, he said. “We had daily meetings and caucuses to keep things within our Occupy (movement) principles,” Beauregard said. He said they knew there were

“moles” listening to their strategies. “That's the way it is. Was kind of fun,” he added. The days were 18- to 20-hours long, he said. They would get out of the convention hall around midnight and to the hotel about 1 a.m. Lodging was not inexpensive. His hotel room cost over $500 a night, he said. Police presence was everywhere, said Beauregard, describing it as “high military style.” He said the Sanders’ supporters were peaceful, but a group of anarchists dressed in black threw things at police. Beauregard explained he became a delegate after people from other districts told him to put his name in to be considered — something he had never done. He went to a caucus in Escondido, gave a short speech telling how he was a Vietnam veteran, part of the Occupy San Diego movement, and lived his whole life working for the underdog, and said, "All of a sudden people started voting for me." "I think it changed my life a little but in a positive direction," Beauregard said of his experience. As to who he will vote for, Beauregard said he won’t support Donald Trump, but doesn’t think he will support Clinton, adding he does not like how they “hijacked” Sanders.

GUEST COMMENTARY

Rate hike unnecessary BY DOUG KAFKA The decision to increase sewer rates late last month by the Ramona Municipal Water District Board of Directors was not in the best interest of their rate payers. The facts are quite clear that there is not a fiscal need for this increase. Consider the following that I presented to the Board of Directors: 1. The current expenses for the sewer division were $400,000 less than budgeted. So why would the RMWD feel that they should increase that budget? 2. The RMWD will receive over $320,000 from the San Diego Country Estates as a windfall for increased EDU expenses, dating back to the Par Lounge renovations. This windfall profit is nowhere to be found in the budget. 3. Current CIP fund summary shows that capital improvement and replacement funds are in excess of $8,500,000.That equates to 86 percent funding. By national standards that is way past excellent. Reserves in excess of 40 percent are considered good. The average water district in California has a 37 percent funding level. 4. The Treasurer for the Board of Directors stated that the district did not need an increase because they were well funded at this time. 5. The RMWD financial officer stated that it would not cause a hardship if there was no increase this year. With all this information on the table the Board of Directors voted to approve the increase with Director Jim Hickle voting against the increase. The underlying feeling of this board seems to be that an annual increase on sewer rates is the best way to go. I don’t agree. Fat budgets and excessive reserves encourage boards to engage in unwarranted purchases and unwise expenditures. A careful review of the RMWD “wish list “ for projects shows just how over-funding can work against the best interests of the ratepayers. We can no longer tolerate the “tax and spend” approach that the current board has taken. We should make improvements to the infrastructure on a well-planned and controlled basis; not just because we have a large surplus in our reserve fund. Doug Kafka is vice president of the San Diego Country Estates Association Board of Directors.

OUR READERS WRITE Rib Fest supports senior center I just want to give a very big thank you to my staff, who donated their time, to my board of directors of the Ramona Senior Center and, especially, to the best volunteers anywhere. This 11th Annual Rib & Chicken Fest would have never happened if it wasn’t for the idea that Pete Bakarich, the president of the board of directors of Ramona Senior Center, had 10 years ago. Out first Rib Fest netted us $1,400. We outgrew the senior center by the sixth year. We went across to the Ramona Outdoor Community Center for three years. The only trouble with that, we were fighting with the Ramona National Bird — flies. We found our home at the Charles R. Nunn Performing Arts Center at Olive Peirce Middle School, and our thanks to the Ramona Unified School District: Kim Lasley, Beverly Singleton, Nancy Profancik and to all the other great staff members who helped us. Another huge part of this Rib Fest is all of you who donated opportunity drawing prizes, the table sponsors and those who baked those super yummy treats for our Bake Sale, and Marty Springsten, as always, a great job. You can find the list of all of the generous sponsors

and donors to our fundraiser on ramonaseniorcenter.com. The Highway 67 billboard was sponsored by our great Ramona Rotary Club. In closing, I am humbled by the way our/my community came out to support the Ramona Senior Center Nutrition Program. And again, the dozens and dozens of those who volunteered to make our fundraiser a huge success. Ray Cardona Executive director Ramona Senior Center Ramona Meals on Wheels

Could worry have another meaning? I was mentally exhausted after reading Bryan Golden’s commentary (7-28-2016), “Stop Worrying.” There was such a heavy emphasis on the worry word, I began to worry that I might be worrying — but then I was reminded of an old Aesop’s fable telling of the silly grasshopper and the industrious ant. Could worry have another meaning? All summer long the industrious ant worked in the hot sun putting away food for the winter, while all the time, the silly grasshopper pranced around SEE LETTERS, A6

Driver faces hit and run, DUI charges Collision on Ramona Oaks Road results in arrest A 48-year-old Ramona woman was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony hit and run after fleeing the scene of a collision around 7 a.m. July 27 in San Diego Country Estates, reported the California Highway Patrol. The collision occurred on Ramona Oaks Road when the suspect, Jeannette Marie Kinikin, was eastbound in a Dodge Caliber and the driver of a silver Mercedes Benz was westbound, both approaching Daza Drive, said CHP

Officer Benjamin Demarest. Kinikin began to make a left turn onto Daza Drive as the Mercedes was approaching the right of way, he said, and the two vehicles collided. The Dodge sustained major damage to the passenger side of the vehicle while the Mercedes had major front end damage, he said. The driver of the Dodge fled the scene but was detained a short distance away by law enforcement, said Demarest. The CHP officer said the driver of the Mercedes, a 54-year-old Ramona woman, complained of head and neck pain. Both drivers were the sole occupants in their vehicles.

FROM LETTERS, A4 singing and mocking the ant for spending all his time working and preparing for winter. The grasshopper said to the ant, “Why put up food? We have plenty right now.” And to that the ant replied, “It is best to prepare for the days of necessity, for to work today, is to eat tomorrow.”

The silly grasshopper then went on his merry way — “what, me worry?” But soon winter came and while the ant was comfortable in his storehouse, the silly grasshopper was shivering and starving outside in the snow. Could it be that ants prepare for tomorrow because that’s what ants do, or do you suppose ants, by nature, are worrywarts? Darrell Beck Ramona

Board finds proposed buildings too industrial

Says need to suit the community character

BY KAREN BRAINARD To enhance community character, Ramona Design Review Board asked Jiffy Lube proponents for a less industrial-looking building and sent those representing McDonald’s improvements back to the drawing board. Both projects are within the boundaries of the Ramona Village Center Form-Based Code, adopted two years ago to promote a walkable, viable community by requiring that businesses do not place parking lots in front and architectural elements complement the rural character of Ramona. Listed in the code are design, signage, lighting and landscaping standards for developers of new projects or remodels. Representatives for a proposed Jiffy Lube at 1850 Main St., next to AutoZone, asked the board for a waiver to put one American with Disabilities Act parking spot in front of the building instead of in back. The board approved the waiver request, but not the plans for the building. “You’ve got a block industrial look there,” design review chair Rob Lewallen said at the July 28 meeting. Brian Charles, development project manager for Boos Development West LLC, said they could add a tower and stone, which was supported by members. The board tabled approval of the project requiring the following: adding a 4-to-5-foot tower element, placing stone around the building’s base, extending a canopy across the building, details for signage and lighting, and landscaping placement. McDonald’s Corporation is in the process of creating new

However, some board members said it looked like a box. “It has absolutely nothing to do with the flavor of Ramona,” said member Jim Cooper, calling it a modern, stark, bare industrial building. “We like the old one better,” commented Lewallen. Members were OK with a dining room remodel, but said

the sign with the 3-feet-6-inch arches, and 24-inch “M” and “D” are not in compliance with the sign code. The form-based code allows lettering to be 12-inches high, said Lewallen. He noted that design review boards in different communities have different requirements. The arches for a McDonald’s on Prospect Street in La Jolla appear as a 12-inch decal, he said, while in Sedona, Ariz., the McDonald’s letters are in turquoise instead of gold so they won’t clash with the sunsets. In Monterey, he said, the arches are black “for a more sophisticated look.” Representatives for the remodel said they would see what direction the company wants to take on the Ramona restaurant. Also at the meeting, Greg Freman, owner of Resurrected Rustic, 948 Main St., which is in the form-based code boundaries, presented plans to re-do his store sign. Two months ago the board told him the sign is too large for the building and not in compliance. Freman said he took a suggestion from the previous meeting about creating a barnwood façade with the “Resurrected Rustic” lettering directly on the wood so it would not constitute as a sign. He also said he removed floodlights and put in low-intensity lights. However, because the facade resembled three panels separated by vertical boards across the front, Cooper said it still looked like a sign. Freman and the board came to a compromise that he would have no vertical boards, and lights would only be above and below the lettering with a canopy shielding the top lights. No candidates showed up to be considered for the vacant board seat. The board voted to keep the same officer slate: Lewallen, chair; Darryl Larson, vice chair; and Scotty Ensign, secretary.

Community garden has room to grow

Ramona Community Garden Coordinator Cindy Dodson shows the new drip irrigation system with timer that has been installed in garden plots.

Gardeners can grow any type of plant they want, and there is plenty of space for more garden plots. Dodson estimated that just 45 percent of the gardening space is being utilized.

BY KAREN BRAINARD Cindy Dodson wants to grow the Ramona Community Garden. “We are welcoming. We want people to come and join us,” said Dodson, who volunteers as coordinator of the community garden at San Vicente Road and 11th Street. “This is a space that’s open to everybody in the community.” For $40 per year, a resident can have a 10-by-15-foot garden plot, chicken compost, water and seeds. Gardening tools and equipment — all donated — are also available to gardeners. “It’s just absolutely fascinating how generous the community can be,” Dodson said of the donations. A $710 Ramona Food and Clothes Closet grant, awarded in June, is being used to buy straw to spread over the plots and retain soil moisture, and for manure, she said. A recent garden upgrade has been the installment of drip irrigation, made possible by a $1,700 Ramona Community Foundation grant that was awarded last year. Dodson said her husband, William, has modified a drip irrigation system that consists of PVC pipe with irrigation holes drilled at different intervals, attached to a timer to schedule the watering. They demonstrated the system before receiving the grant, she said, and are

FROM GARDEN, A9 “Everybody brings food, shares stories…and just have a good time.” Every year they have a fundraiser called “The Night in the Garden Party” with bands and a silent auction. Dodson got involved with the garden four years ago after retiring from a career in the technology industry. The garden, which is next to St. Mary’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church on land owned by the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, was started in 2009 by Ramona resident Theresa Tynan. Additions over the years include a Ramona Community Garden sign, created by a Boy Scout, and three raised garden beds by a Girl Scout Troop. Besides enlisting a volunteer Master Gardener, Dodson said future plans call for more composting and adding about a dozen chickens. “We really want to be well-known in the community as a nice place to be,” she said. Investigation continues into mailbox thefts BY KAREN BRAINARD U.S. postal inspectors are investigating multiple mailbox thefts in the San Diego Country Estates area that have occurred in the past two months, according to the postal service. Anyone who is a victim of mail theft, which can lead to identity theft and fraud, is asked to notify postal inspectors by calling 877-876-2455 or filing a report online at postalinspectors.uspis.gov. Mailbox thefts occurred in the Estates in July, said authorities, but no details were provided. On June 2, about 144 postal customers were affected when locked postal boxes containing eight to 16 residential mail slots were ripped open and heavily damaged. On June 2, Ramona sheriff’s deputies arrested four people – three of them San Diego residents – after they were observed emptying mailboxes near the 15000 block of Rainbird Road. Mario Trejo, general manager of the Estates homeowners association (HOA), said a few residents spoke about the thefts at a recent association meeting, questioning who is responsible for the mailboxes. The boxes are owned by the U.S. Postal Service so it is responsible to repair them and has been doing so, he said, adding that the HOA is cooperating with postal inspectors and the sheriff’s department. Stacia Crane, public information officer for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, suggested residents or the HOA could point video cameras at the mailboxes or add motion detector lights to catch or deter thieves. Because the postal service no longer purchases such mailboxes for communities, those additions would have to be covered by homeowners, she said. Identity theft is a big issue, Crane noted. “Never leave mail overnight,” cautioned Crane. “Take mail out of your box every day.” Often thieves are looking for a check or money order they can cash in to buy drugs, she said. “They’re looking for something quick they can turn around,” said Crane.

They can also use credit card applications to open a line of credit, she added. “The big thing they want is to get credit under someone’s name so they don’t have to pay it,” she said. Crane recommended using a gel pen when writing checks that will be mailed.

Normal ink can be washed off so a name on a check can be changed, she said, but gel ink is more difficult to wash off. Mail theft often occurs during the night or early morning when few witnesses may be around, according to the postal service, which

offers these prevention tips: • Collect your mail from your mailbox every day as soon as possible after it is delivered. Do not allow it to accumulate, even in a locked mailbox. • Deposit outgoing mail into blue collection boxes before the final pick-up of the

same day of deposit. Check the pick-up schedule on the box to ensure your mail will not sit in the box overnight or over the weekend. • When expecting packages to be delivered, monitor tracking at www.usps.com so you know when to expect your shipment. A new U.S.

ASA National Softball Tournament

Girls win 1, lose 2 by 1 run in nationals BY JOE NAIMAN The under-14 Ramona Girls Softball team won one game and lost two by just one run in the American Softball Association National Tournament in La Habra July 26-31. “They did awesome,” said team manager Jim Anderson. In his capacity as manager, Anderson handled administrative matters and was in charge of the team on the diamond, while head coach Thomas Osuna readied the players for competition. One of the 11 girls on Ramona's under-14 roster moved out of the state and was unable to compete at the nationals, so two under-12 Ramona girls joined their under-14 counterparts at La Habra to provide a 12-player contingent. The evening of July 26 involved a skills competition. Ramona's two pool play games took place July 27. The first game was against Laguna Niguel. Ramona is considered an under-14 C level team while Laguna Niguel was an under-14 B level team. Laguna Niguel defeated Ramona by an 11-4 margin. "We got beat up pretty bad," Anderson said. Diamond Bar is a C level team, so the loss to a B team may have prepared Ramona for the game against Diamond Bar. "It got the girls motivated," Anderson said. The game against Diamond Bar ended with Ramona on the favorable end of the 14-2 score. "That was exciting," Anderson said. The pool play results put Ramona into the winners' bracket, which has a double-elimination format, for subsequent play. On July 28 Ramona faced Redondo Sunset, a C

team. "We had one bad inning and they scored 15 runs on us," Anderson said. "We whittled it all the way back to 15 to 14." Neither team reached base during the first inning. "Then it just opened up. They just kept hitting in the gap," Anderson said. The mercy rule ends a game if a team is ahead by 15 runs after three innings, 12 runs after four innings, or 10 runs after five innings. The 15-run margin Redondo Sunset built up in the second inning would be the largest lead of the game. "We held them to nothing and scratched back," Anderson said. Ramona avoided the mercy rule. The rules also prevent any new inning from starting more than an hour and 40 minutes after the first pitch. Ramona loaded the bases in the final inning but could not score the tying run. A Las Vegas team at the B level called the Majestix All-Stars played Ramona on July 29. "That one went back and forth. Every inning pretty much the lead would swap," Anderson said. The time limit would have ended the game in Ramona's favor had a Majestix batter not hit a solo home run in the final inning to tie the game. That triggered the international tiebreaker rule where a runner starts each inning on second base. The Majestix team batted first and scored. Ramona was unable to score in the tiebreaker portion and was saddled with a 10-9 loss. "It just didn't go their way," Anderson said. Anderson noted that two of Ramona's three losses were by one run, including a loss to a B team by the international tiebreaker. "They held their own," he said.

Ramona Girls Softball U14 team dresses for opening ceremonies of the American Softball Association National Tournament in La Habra. "They did awesome for Ramona." Ramona High School varsity coach Kristina Wright and Bulldogs junior varsity coach Mike Simone assisted in the team's instructional activities. This is the first time a Ramona Girls Softball team went to nationals. Players included Megan Pratt, Kyla Blanco, Abbie Smith, Allie Rosenblum, Hannah Anderson, Janessa Parada, Karlee Stickler, Corisa Parada, Livi Rosenblum, Kamryn Jordan,Corinne Ward and Elizabeth Feagin. "It's a great experience for the kids to go to nationals," Anderson said. "We appreciate the support of Ramona and RGS for helping us get to that point."

Arthur bounces back for win at Glen Helen Brandon “The Stinger” Arthur showed up for rounds 9 and 10 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino looking for a win and he got it in round 10. The 20-year-old Ramona resident was on the podium June 18 and 19in rounds 7 and 8 at Estero Beach, but he wanted the top spot. During qualifying for round 9, he was second fastest. With a zero inversion drawn, he started outside row one for the race. “We started outside the front row but didn’t get a good jump,” said Arthur. “We came out in third. I ran

down (Brock) Heger and made a pass on him and then started to catch (Ryan) Beat.” Arthur was making his way to front in a hurry. He carried too much speed into a corner and lost traction. “I made a mistake and spun out,” Arthur said. “Then I got a flat tire and had to run on it for four laps; I came home ninth. It was a brutal race on Saturday. A lot of people were having problems.” The Lucas Oil track crew had made some changes to the composition of the dirt on the track before the race and the drivers were quick to notice. It did not take long for deep ruts to

form on the track. It’s a constant challenge to adjust a truck’s suspension and tire set-up to adapt to the ever changing conditions. Arthur does his own work on his truck and made a switch from his normal all terrain tires to Toyo’s mud terrain before round 10 on July 24. “On Sunday, we didn’t have the best qualifying effort; we started fourth,” said Arthur. “We were fourth at turn one and then made a pass to get into third. I was in a battle with Beat and got him after the half-way caution. Then I set my sights on (Jerett) Brooks and started to reel him in a little bit. He was faster in a

couple spots on the track, but we were faster in others. He made a slight mistake in turn three and I got past him. From there I kept the hammer down for the win. My Competitive Metals, Toyo Tires, Pro Traffic Services Pro Lite was fast. We made a pretty big change with the tires and it paid off. Our team worked really hard this weekend. The track was pretty brutal and it tore up a lot of trucks. Overall it was a great weekend for our team.” Rounds 11 and 12 will be Aug. 13 and 14 at Wild West Motorsports Park in Sparks, Nev.

High temperatures prompt monthlong park closures Mt. Gower Preserve at the end of Gunn Stage Road in San Diego Country Estates is one of four county parks that will be closed in August. San Diego County Parks and Recreation Department takes the action as a precaution due to the month’s expected extreme heat. El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Wilderness Gardens in Pala also are closed through Aug. 31. In addition, Agua Caliente Regional

Park near Julian is closed all summer and will reopen Labor Day weekend. Nearly 100 other county parks and preserves are open this month, the county noted. County parks and recreation staff recommend that those who go for a hike, be smart about it. Following are some safety tips: • Let someone know where you will be and when you plan to return. • Hike with others, never alone. • Leave your dog at home for

Julian-area crime novelist pens new deal BY JOHN WILKENS

Don Winslow, the Julian-area crime novelist who has written two critically acclaimed epics about the Mexican drug wars, will pen a third one, the publishing house William Morrow announced. The novel is part of a two-book, “multimillion-dollar deal,” the publisher said. Specific terms were not released. Winslow, 62, is the author of 19 novels, including “Savages,” made into a film by Oliver Stone, and “Satori,” which is planned for a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Among other writers and critics, he’s most admired for the drug novels “Power of the Dog,” which came out in 2005, and “The Cartel,” published last year. Combined, the two books stretch across 1,200 searing, violent pages and explore the bonds and betrayals of the drug trade, the difference between justice and vengeance, and the hypocrisy of Americans whose appetites, laws and guns fuel much of the mayhem south of the border. “The Cartel” was named a best book of the year by dozens of publications and won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize for best mystery/thriller. Film rights sold for $6 million, with Ridley Scott set to direct. In the publishing deal announced recently, the first of Winslow’s two new books will come out in the summer of 2017. The subject matter was not disclosed. The second book will complete the drug-war trilogy; no publication date has been announced. John Wilkens writes for The San Diego Union-Tribune.

COURTESY OF LINDSEY MCMORRAN

Lindsey and Brandon McMorran and their children, Peyton and Parker, spend the day at a Rady Children's Celebration of Champions, supporting cancer survivor Lyla Chase of Ramona. FROM HOPE, A1 back to Ramona with Peyton and their 4-year-old son, Parker, after temporarily living in Broomfield, Colo., to be near Peyton’s doctors at Children’s Hospital Colorado. There, the little girl’s tumor was frequently monitored with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). “It hasn’t grown, remains stable, so we’re back and she’s doing great,” said Lindsey. The doctors now do an MRI every six months, she hasn’t shown any symptoms, “and just by the grace of God, she is our little survivor.” Lindsey remembers telling her husband: “It’s there for a reason. And it’s for us to help other people and open our eyes to another world.”

Here with Hope Foundation, which Lindsey co-founded with Katie Rooney, owner of Poway Sushi Lounge, gives families personalized attention and helps guide them through the many challenges they face, including finding the right doctors. Too often families think they have to stay with the first medical opinion, she said. “Every doctor is different and they have different techniques,” she noted. When a child goes to the hospital, the foundation brings a Hope Basket with items such as electronic tablets, coloring books and games to keep them entertained. “If we can make some magic in their lives, we find a way to do it,” Lindsey said. That included a Batman-themed party for a boy known as “Super Logan,” a brain cancer

survivor. The nonprofit is 100 percent volunteer, and 100 percent of funds raised go back into helping the families, noted Lindsey. Last year’s Putting for Peyton grossed over $20,000, she said, and 25 percent of those funds were donated to a local family to help pay for a clinical trial in Los Angeles. The proceeds also went toward Hope Baskets and the Hope Homes fund. Lindsey said originally she wanted the foundation to provide housing by hospitals for the families, but saw that Ronald McDonald House fills that void. “Our goal is still to open up a Hope Home, but it’s going to be a place where we can send the families — the ones that aren’t in treatment in the hospital — that they can just go, just be, be with their families, be with horses, be in fresh air and just be outside.” She saw the benefit of that during the July

4, 2015, holiday, when the foundation took five families to Steamboat Springs, Colo., where they participated in outdoor activities and in a parade and enjoyed a free vacation. Part of the funds from Hope Homes pays mortgages and utilities for families who need the financial assistance while their child is in the hospital. Among those contributing are real estate agents who donate a percentage of their commission. In addition to the Nov. 19 Putting for Peyton tournament at San Vicente Golf Resort, Here with Hope is planning more events and fundraisers, including a gala in February 2017 for its sponsors, and a Taste of Hope next spring. FROM BRIDGE, A1 the third quarter of 2015. Hanger said it will probably be another year before they have 30 percent of the design completed, and he will then bring it to the planning group for input and approval. When T&T members asked to see specifications of the project, Hanger said, “We don’t have anything to give you that’s approved yet.” Working with the Local Assistance Program at Caltrans’ headquarters in Sacramento has been slow, he said, so about a month ago county staff took the project to Caltrans’ District 11 Local Assistance Program in San Diego. Of five alternatives, Hanger said three cannot be constructed due to hydraulic issues. Plans, he said, call for a 51-foot-wide bridge, two 12-foot-wide travel lanes, one six-foot wide sidewalk, and a 10-foot wide decomposed granite multi-use path. One concrete barrier would separate the pathway and roadway, he said, and two

T&T member Dawn Perfect asked if the barriers would be K-rails, noting that doesn’t fit the community character. Hanger said they are similar, but to receive approval from Caltrans they are asking for

the minimum and, once approved, can seek improvements. Jim Cooper, T&T chair, said the bridge will increase walkability for residents but there are concerns about sight limitations at the 13th Street intersection with Maple and Walnut streets. Cooper also said that,

because the bridge won’t be high enough to ride under, equestrians will have to ride out of the creek bed and cross the road, and there are concerns the surface may be slippery for the hooves. Hanger suggested members send concerns in an email so they are documented. In other business, T&T members: • Recommended approval of a Jiffy Lube at 1850 Main St., next to AutoZone; • Supported a one-year extension for a tentative map of a 10-lot subdivision at 310 E St., near Third and F streets; • Tabled consideration of a drainage area across Keyes Road, a few feet south of Hanson Lane, that two residents said is difficult to navigate with trailers and large vehicles; • Recommended that the widening of state Route 67 to two lanes through the Highland Valley/Dye Road intersection be extended 50 feet heading east for safety access to Patrick and Norma Jean Kiernan’s driveway where accidents have occurred, and a sign be installed to alert drivers the roadway narrows.

7 tips for quick kitchen cleanup (StatePoint) Prepare. Eat. Clean up. Repeat. In the kitchen, it’s a never-ending cycle of conquering messes. These seven simple cleaning tips and products will cut down time spent restoring order in your space. 1. Start with the sink Before cooking, always empty the sink to make space for washing dirty items, including your hands. Combat lingering odors from garlic or onions by rubbing your hands on your stainless steel sink to remove the smell. Be sure to disinfect the sink first, as research shows that Salmonella and E. coli are found on 45 percent of kitchen sinks. 2. Find a fabulous faucet Rethink your faucet. Simplify cleanup with a high-arc pulldown spout, which provides extra room for large pots and pans, and the ability to reach all corners of the sink. Plus, new spray technologies, such as Moen’s Power Clean, can provide more spray power while containing splash and minimizing mess. Greater force means faster cleanup and less water used on tough-to-rinse foods, like peanut butter. 3. Make microwave miracles Your sink and faucets are the workhorses of the kitchen, but your microwave is probably next in line. So, what happens if your eggs explode or your sauce splatters? Place a bowl of water with cut lemons in the microwave and run it until the water boils. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the steam to loosen the splatter and then wipe clean. In the future, always cover your items with a microwave-safe lid, paper towel or even a coffee filter. 4. Get creative with coffee filters Coffee filters are perfect for many

cleaning (or mess prevention) jobs in the kitchen. They work as a spoon rest, a strainer or a wrap for ice cream cones to catch drips, and can be placed under greasy foods like bacon or french fries to soak up excess oil and cut down on cleanup (and calories). 5. Go streak-free Tired of the constant fingerprints and streaks on stainless appliances? Ditch harsh cleaners for a simple solution: water and a microfiber cloth, which feature microscopic fibers that pick up more than regular cloths. Better yet, choose faucets and appliances with finishes that repel these unsightly marks. 6. Don’t trash food -- dispose it More than 60 million homeowners rely on garbage disposals to assist with daily kitchen cleanup, according to Moen Consumer & Market Insights. This handy appliance can significantly reduce the amount of trash you create, which means sending less to the landfill and fewer smelly garbage cans. Choose a powerful, dependable garbage disposal that quickly and powerfully grinds food scraps, allowing you to spend more time at the dinner table and less time at the sink. 7. Protect the pantry Most pantry doors are shut for a reason -- there’s a mess lurking in there. From sugar spills to syrup leaks, many shelves are a sticky situation. Non-adhesive shelf liners are an ideal solution for easy cleanup. The solid surface will help contain spills and, since they’re machine-washable, you can toss the liner in the wash and re-use it. Life in the kitchen is messy, but with a few tips and updates, cleanup can be a breeze.

Back-to-school health checklist With Ramona public schools scheduled to start Aug. 22, it’s almost time to dust off the book bags. With 5,494 students projected to be enrolled in Ramona Unified schools, physicians say now is the time to get everyone’s health in check. “For many, the focus is on back to school clothes and supplies, which is important,” said Jay Kaplan, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. “But it’s equally, if not more important to also take time to schedule routine doctor visits for more information and to make sure that your child’s health information is all organized.” Here are a few things parents are advised to do now. • Organize your child’s medical history records and emergency medical contact information. • Complete a consent-to-treat form and give copies to the school nurse and any day care providers to keep in your child’s record and to take with them if your child should need to go to the emergency department. The form will allow caregivers to authorize medical treatment. The form should include information related to prescription medications, medical problems or previous surgeries as well as pertinent family history and emergency contacts. Free forms may be downloaded at http://bit.ly/2aDJWjE. An emergency information form is also available for children with special needs.

• Coordinate with the school nurse and your child’s physician to develop action plans for any health issues, such as asthma or food allergies. Communicate these plans to all appropriate caregivers. • Schedule medical and dental check-ups before school starts. Some children will need immunizations. Consider vision and hearing tests, since impairment can adversely affect learning. Consider a sports check-up if your child will be playing in sports. • Review and do a dry run with your child of his or her route to school, explaining potential hazards along the way. If your child walks or bikes to school, make sure he or she understands potential traffic dangers. • If your child takes the bus, establish a safe, visible pickup/dropoff spot, preferably with a group of children and in an area where they can be clearly seen by adults. If your child drives to school, make sure he or she obeys all laws and wears seatbelts. • Make sure your children know how to telephone for help. Post emergency contact numbers by every telephone in your home. Have them practice how to call 911 or the local emergency number and give their names, address and a brief description of the problem. • Develop a family emergency plan in case something happens on the way to or from and while at school. Be aware of the emergency and evacuation plans for your children’s schools.
