Cooper, reporting on the PLDO projects to the Ramona Community Planning Group at its Sept. 3 meeting, said the county has not released the current amount in Ramona’s PLDO account. In June the reported amount was $806,533. Cooper was chair of the Parks and Rec Subcommittee in 2013 when the three projects, as well as others, were added to that year’s PLDO Project Priority List. Planning group member Torry Brean now heads the subcommittee. The projects remained on the list for 2014-15. Planning group endorses Ramona Wine Trail signs By KAREN BRAINARD Ramona Community Planning Group threw in its support for Ramona Wine Trail signs at its Sept. 3 meeting. Dave Billick, vice president of the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association (RVVA), presented renderings of the wine trail sign he created. The 8-foot high by 5-foot wide signs with attached 8-inch high metal wine placards, each identifying a different wine tasting room with a directional arrow and mileage, was approved by the Ramona Design Review Board July 30. The purpose, Billick said, is to eliminate “visual clutter” — the sandwich board signs that many wineries put out every weekend. Billick said he still needs approval from the county and from Caltrans, acknowledging that may not be easy, but he added that support from the planning group could help. The signs are proposed to be placed in Caltrans or county rights-of-way. As a public speaker, former planning group member Dennis Sprong said he is concerned that the signs will not include wine tasting rooms that are not members of the RVVA. Sprong said he wants to see all bonded and licensed wineries included.

The signs are being funded by the RVVA and grants, but Billick said all licensed and bonded wineries in the Ramona area will be included. “This is all inclusive, not just RVVA members,” Billick said. Sprong also questioned whether it would be compliant with the county sign ordinance or seen as promoting businesses. Billick said the RVVA is a nonWYVÄ[ [OH[ ^PSS IL THPU[HPUPUN [OL directional signs and San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob has endorsed the idea. “I am for the concept,” Sprong said. “I think it brings class to our community,” said planning group chair Jim Piva. “This community is growing and we’re proud of the wineries. I love the fact that it’s uniform. I’m all in favor of what you’re doing.” The planning group voted 12-1 to support it and send a send a letter to Caltrans. Planners questioned why medical marijuana collective proposals no longer need planning group approval. Piva said he was told that the county was under the threat of a lawsuit from the state because its guidelines were too restrictive. Applicants now work with the county Planning and Development Services and the sheriff’s department to meet requirements. Because of the lighting issue, the county sent the applicant to the design review board. 1HYYL[[ 9HTHP`H ^P[O 7SHUUPUN and Development Services gave a presentation on the county’s cell tower ordinance and answered questions from residents in attendance who are opposed to a cell tower in their Cedar Street neighborhood. 9HTHP`H HSZV WYV]PKLK [OL planning group with county requirements for park model units that can be used as a dwelling on property for a family member requiring health care.

Accountability, not a gimmick By MIKE HARRISON Having worked in public policy for many years, I understand the frustration many of us feel when ^L ZLL [OVZL Y\UUPUN MVY VMÄJL THRPUN WYVTPZLZ VY issuing challenges, simply for the sake of gaining a photo op or having a clever tag line for their campaign mailers. I am running for the California State Assembly in +PZ[YPJ[ ILJH\ZL [OYV\NO [OL VMÄJL VM *VUNYLZZman Duncan Hunter I have been working in this area for over 20 years — I know the issues, I know the communities, and I know the people. 0 KV UV[ ILSPL]L PU LTW[` YOL[VYPJ HUK VM[LU ÄUK it insulting, if not a huge waste of time. I believe in working hard and I stand on the standard that when I say or do something, there is a substantive purpose behind it. It is for this reason that I am proud to have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge holding myself accountable to my neighbors, friends and Californians throughout our state that I will not vote for or support any effort that would result in new or higher taxes. I did this for two reasons: one practical and one personal. Practically, the overall question is what is the tax environment like in California? Our state has the highest state sales tax, highest gas tax and highest marginal income tax rates in the nation. Just this year alone, Sacramento politicians have proposed more than $130 billion in new taxes on services, property and even hidden taxes on soda and fuel use. This environment has a negative effect on small business investment and growth potential. Just recently, Chief Executive Magazine ranked California dead last in its survey of CEOs of which states were business friendly, and the Tax Foundation ranked California 48, ahead of only New York and New Jersey, as the least competitive business tax structures. While CEO surveys, economic statistics and policy analysis are useful, they are not who I see and talk to when I am discussing California’s business environment. It’s the small business owners who are members of our local Chambers of Commerce and the community leaders participating in roundtables KLZWLYH[LS` [Y`PUN [V ÄUK HUZ^LYZ [V [OLZL VUNVPUN challenges. The message I receive is consistent: California’s tax environment is not conducive to growth and success on any level, whether it be personal or business. More importantly, it doesn’t have to be this way. This leads me to my personal reason for signing [OPZ WSLKNL 0 ÄYTS` ILSPL]L V\Y WV[LU[PHS WHY[PJ\larly here in San Diego County, outweighs our challenges, and I am inspired by those who feel the same way. The pledge I signed required two witnesses and I asked two ladies from Ramona who recently partnered to start a small business on Main Street selling art supplies and offering drawing classes to students. San Diego Magazine selects Kohill Winery, Edwards Vineyard and Cellars for its August 2015 ‘Best of San Diego’ edition The August issue of San Diego Magazine featured the magazine editors’ selections for “Best of San Diego,” and this year’s four winery selections included two from Ramona. The top honors went to Mike and Aurora Kopp of Kohill Winery and Victor and Beth Edwards of Edwards Vineyard and Cellars. The two Ramona wineries shared their wines at the magazine’s Best of San Diego 2015 Party held at Liberty Station. Both wineries poured samples for the 2,400 attendees at the sold-out event. Also pouring was a third Ramona winery, Barrel 1. The Best of San Diego Party brought together the top restaurants, wineries and breweries for an evening of food and entertainment that featured unlimited tastings from celebrated chefs, sips from wineries and breweries, and cocktails made from premium spirits, reported the magazine.

“We want the audience at Salerno Winery to have a relaxing, convivial time,” said Walter Ritter, the company’s executive director. “So we will read a story or two and take a short break so everybody can get a glass of wine or a bite of pizza and chat with friends. Then we’ll do another story, and so on. All the time, of course, the music will continue. Our pianist, Jacqui Silver, is a marvel.” Veronica Murphy, artistic director of Write Out Loud, said the company has been active in Ramona since last January, “bringing ‘literature aloud’ programs to elementary schools, preschools, the senior center and the library. “Now, as we complete our activities in Ramona, we hope adults from throughout the community will come to A Literary

Tasting and enjoy a delightful and unique event.” Write Out Loud is a theater company that does not produce plays or musicals. They read literature aloud for audiences all over San Diego County. “We’ve enjoyed getting to know Ramona over the past year,” said Ritter. “Our audiences here ranged from 3-yearolds in preschool to octogenarians at the senior center. We are very grateful to the Ramona Community Foundation for making our programs possible here.” Reservations are not necessary for the Salerno Winery event, but those who would like to reserve seats at a table nearest the actors may do so by calling Write Out Loud at 619-297-8953 or emailing at writeoutloudsd@gmail.com.

Book Review sen complex, which encompassed 49 subcamps, died there. This results in a reasonable estimate of the death toll of somewhere between 119,000 and 195,000 people. As a nationality, Hungary’s Jews were the last to be rounded up and transported to Nazi concentration/extermination camps. When liberated from Mauthausen by the American soldiers, Rubin made a vow to himself that he would emigrate to the United States and enlist in the Army to become a G.I. Joe. Cohen doesn’t reveal this personal vow until the reader is almost a quarter of the way into “Single Handed” albeit Rubin made this vow when he was liberated from Mauthausen some four years earlier. Inasmuch as Hungary had aligned itself with Germany to battle Russia, Hungarians were regarded as “hostiles” by the Americans. For this reason, it put the kibosh on Rubin’s dream of emigrating to the United States shortly after World War II’s ending, even though Rubin was a teenager. There were no provisions or waivers in the applicable rules for emigration to cover Hungary’s Jews who were imprisoned by the Nazis. But rules changed over time and in 1948 Rubin was OK’d to emigrate to America. After he was liberated, Rubin returned to what had been his home in Paszto, Hungary. Before World War II, there had been 120 Jewish families living in Paszto. Only members of three of those families returned to Paszto, and found that things had changed. The Nazis had “cleansed” Paszto of its Jews. Some 400 Jewish persons were no longer a part of Paszto’s life. It was also some four years after World War II’s end that Rubin learned the fate of the rest of his immediate family. His 7-yearsolder brother, Emery, waited until he visited Rubin in New York City in 1949 to tell him personally and privately that their parents, Ferenc and Rosa, and their youngest sister, Ilonka, were

all murdered in the “showers” of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Cohen informs the reader that President George W. Bush, in speaking about Cpl. Rubin in the White House Medal of Honor ceremony, never mentions anything about his comWHU`»Z ÄYZ[ ZLYNLHU[»Z Z[YVUN anti-Semitism and that the sergeant “volunteered” Rubin for dangerous missions, hoping that Rubin would be killed. But Rubin kept surviving. In the documentaries and newspaper accounts about Tibor Rubin, the sergeant’s name is never mentioned, but Cohen gives him a name. In the author’s notes after the formal text ends, the readers learn that Cohen’s “name” for the sergeant is a pseudonym. @V\ UL]LY ÄUK V\[ OPZ YLHS name, but he died in November of 1986. ;OL JVTWHU`»Z ÄYZ[ ZLYgeant disobeyed his comTHUKPUN VMÄJLYZ» VYKLYZ [V process Rubin’s nomination papers for the Silver Star and the Medal of Honor. Cohen writes: “Peyton made no excuse for his dislike of minorities. He bragged openly about his prejudices and how he randed them: Negroes topped his list, followed by Jews, Mexicans and Italians.” “Single Handed” describes how Rubin, as a teenage survivor of Mauthausen, learned things he would later employ to save lives of fellow American prisoners of war in Korea. Cohen informs the reader that “approximately 40 percent of all American captives had perished as POWs, a higher percentage of prisoners died than in any war in U.S. history, even higher than the astonishing 37 percent that had died at the hands of the Japanese.” Part of the citation for Rubin’s Medal of Honor credits him with “saving the lives of as many as 40 of his fellow prisoners.”

Besides learning that Cohen’s name for Rubin’s ZLYNLHU[ ^HZ ÄJ[P[PV\Z [OL reader is informed that Rubin’s birth mother as well as the birth mother of his older siblings died while Rubin was an infant. He never knew her (his father’s second wife). The mother who raised Rubin from infancy, Rosa, was Ferenc’s third wife. The campaign to get Rubin his much-deserved Medal of Honor was conducted by a handful of his fellow platoon-mates and POWs as well as a few Congressional members and the National Organization of the Jewish War Veterans (JWV), the oldest Congressionally-chartered veterans’ service organization in the United States. It was a campaign that took almost a quarter of a century. Cohen devotes more than 15 percent of his book’s formal pages to describe that campaign in detail. Rubin received legal advice to instigate litigation, but he refused to sue the U.S. Army over the issue of his medals. Only two fellow POWs were still alive when Rubin

ÄUHSS` YLJLP]LK OPZ 4LKHS of Honor. Richard A. “Dick” Whalen, 77, and Leo Cormier Jr., 2 months shy of his 80th birthday, sat in the front row for Rubin’s receipt of his Medal of Honor at the White House. They had lived to see him honored with the highest award for valor above and beyond the call of duty that this nation can bestow on its combat service personnel. Whalen and Cormier are still alive as of this writing. So here we have the examples of two still living recipients of the Medal of Honor. Both were “minorities.” Rascon’s paperwork went “missing” for 34 years and involved the intercession of a U.S. president for OPT [V ÄUHSS` YLJLP]L OPZ Medal of Honor. What did the Army know about Rubin in 2005 that it hadn’t been informed about at least 20 years earlier? If you don’t know, read “Single Handed.” Was discrimination endemic to the U.S. military in its award of its highest recognition of valor above and beyond the call of duty? You be the judge.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www.nationwideposting. com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9448-8587.
