OPINION

The Importance of Completing Coast to Crest Trail By TRISH BOAZ Big ideas are born when people share their dreams and pull together to make things happen. A perfect example of this is the creation of an amazing river park in the center of the county, called the San Dieguito River Park. A small group of friends gathered around a dinner table in Del Mar to express their concerns about the alarming loss of wildlife habitat, sensitive plants and open space near their homes, due to the residential and commercial development boom of the ‘80s. Talk led to action and in 1986, this passionate crew formed the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. Along with their predecessors, the San Dieguito Lagoon Committee and the Friends of the San Dieguito River Valley, they gained the attention of their local elected VMĂ„JPHSZ HUK V[OLY SLHKLYZ ^OV YLHSPaLK [OH[ [OL ULLK for housing, public facilities and infrastructure for a growing population needed to be balanced with conservation of our natural and cultural resources. And so, the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority was created to develop and implement the vision of the 55-mile-long San Dieguito River Park and the Coast to Crest Trail that stretches from the Del Mar shoreline to the Julian mountains. During the past 29 years, a lot of sweat equity has gone into planning and constructing the 35 miles of the Coast to Crest Trail that are now open to the public, along with an additional 20 miles of trails that connect local communities to the Coast to Crest Trail. The Coast to Crest Trail provides the community with access to our beautiful parks and open spaces including the San Dieguito Lagoon, a state marine conserva[PVU HYLH HUK H WVW\SHY ZWV[ MVY IPYKZ HSVUN [OL 7HJPĂ„J Flyway. The trek from Santa Fe Valley, through Del Dios Gorge to Lake Hodges, over the David Kreitzer Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge (the longest stress-ribbon bridge in the world), past historic Sikes Adobe, and through San Pasqual Valley are 23 continuous miles of pure heaven right in our own backyard. Trails at Volcan Mountain lead to the summit, rewarding hikers with amazing views of the Anza Borrego State Park, Cuyamaca State Park, Cleveland National Forest and the San Dieguito and San Diego River waterZOLKZ PUJS\KPUN KV^U[V^U :HU +PLNV HUK [OL 7HJPĂ„J Ocean. Along with our partners, we are making huge strides in completing key linkages of the Coast to Crest Trail at Lusardi Creek, Pamo Valley and Santa Ysabel. We are fortunate to have a trail that traverses urban, rural and remote areas of the county, providing us with an array of scenic vistas, sights of beautiful plants and wildlife, smells of nature and great exercise. The momentum to complete the Coast to Crest Trail continues to build and support for the trail grows as people become more aware of its existence and experience it for themselves. You really do feel a sense of place —and peace—when you are on the Coast to Crest Trail. But don’t take our word for it—come see for yourself. Letters Willing to help true refugees, but not radical Muslim terrorists In response to the Beth Prinz letter, 9-17-15 Sentinel: You are correct, Beth, that the current “refugeeâ€? situation in Europe truly is an immense crisis. However, if one takes a closer look at the pictures/videos provided to us by the mainstream media, you will notice a few women/children in the forefront, and MANY (72% or more) young men, nicely dressed, of military age in the background. If you watch the recent protests by the “refugeesâ€? at the Hungarian border, most all of the “refugeesâ€? are the same men mentioned above. Don’t get me wrong. I truly feel sorry for [OVZL \UMVY[\UH[L :`YPHUZ OVULZ[S` Ă…LLPUN the turmoil and destruction brought forth by ISIS, and I have respect for those who wish to help those unfortunate souls. But there are also many radical Muslim terYVYPZ[Z PUĂ„S[YH[PUN V[OLY JV\U[YPLZ TP_LK in with the refugees. And now, Barack Hussein Obama wants to bring 10,000 to 100,000 of these “refugeesâ€? into the U.S. How many of those will be radical Muslim terrorists, determined to kill anyone who does not share their beliefs? I have received many requests in the past week to send money to help the refugees in Europe, but I will not send any of my dollars/cents until anyone can guarantee my money will not go to aid a radical Muslim terrorist hiding amongst the refugees. Honorary Mayor Sharon Davis Only Sanders and O’Malley have intelligent ideas to solve problems America’s Orwellian world of stupid for four months has been busily obsessing on Donald the belligerent bellower of inane ideas while totally ignoring the one presidential candidate drawing the biggest, most enthusiastic crowds: U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Gov. Martin O’Malley are the only candidates who have intelligent ideas on how to solve America’s serious problems and who will not be just robber baron stooges like all the other candidates. Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley are not getting their campaign funds from the robber barons, Wall Street, the military industrial complex, oil and gas corporations or AIPAC but from ordinary citizens who really care about how corrupt America’s political systems have become because of those billions in bribe money and as a result destroyed a great republic. and it is corrupt. One Association agent recently told me (and others) that LAFCO and County Supervisor Jacob favored the existing contract for San Vicente treated wastewater. Anybody reading the LAFCO report on the subject will surely reach the opposite conclusion. LAFCO has no enforcement authority, so its failure to prosecute this case cannot be interpreted as “favor.” No evidence was presented that Supervisor Jacob participated in the negotiation of this con[YHJ[ [OH[ Ä_LZ [OL WYPJL VM treated wastewater being sold to private entities far below market value. The Association has many written procedures. These procedures are to “protect” the Association electorate, and failure to follow these procedures denies the electorate their right of due process. Association actions and responses must be written, or they are “plausibly deniable.”

Wastewater Treatment Facility. Instead they subsequently bragged about “saving” the Association several hundred thousand dollars of capital by decreasing the size of the new pond on the golf course and eliminating the pipe and pump replacement required for the Association to “handle” all of the treated wastewater volume. This change in strategy will cost the Association electorate hundreds of thousands of dollars every year on our property tax assessments. Surely this is another example of political corruption. The Association newsletter is published monthly. The lead time for publication of a letter was recently extended, ensuring that an elector response to anything published would not appear for two months. The Association Board actually took note of this and stated that this was a less drastic action than terminating the publication of elector letters (which were becoming “too negative.”) This is censorship S T A T E

Many political analysts believe that the widespread failure of Americans to vote in elections PZ H YLÅLJ[PVU VM [OLPY KLspair. When corruption is so widely perceived, most potential voters simply do not feel their vote counts. This is surely a more valid explanation of local electoral turnouts than “apathy” as claimed by some incumbents. The oft-heard “I try to avoid them (i.e. Association, District, school district)” is more evidence that too many of our local LSLJ[LK VMÄJPHSZ HUK [OLPY agents are perceived as corrupt. Author Chuck LeMenager to trace Ramona, Julian history highlights Drawing from his deep well of historical facts about the Ramona and Julian area, author Chuck LeMenager will be at the Unicorn Books and Gifts on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. LeMenager, a Ramona resident, will be talking about the many people and happenings found in his trilogy of backcountry heritage in “Off the Main Road—Revisited, “Ramona and Round About, Second Edition and “Julian City and Cuyamaca Country. The three books were originally written several years ago,

but brought back recently in enlarged editions to add to and broaden their historical content. Each now contains about 260 pages and 90 illustrations. Two of them received the San Diego Historical Society’s Institute of /PZ[VY` (^HYK ^OLU ÄYZ[ W\Ilished, and the new editions contain the same material plus the updates. LeMenager came to Ramona in 1970 to help plan and build San Diego Country Estates. He has experienced the area’s growth from 5,000 to about 43,000 and seen and chronicled many of those events.

Among them are the build-out of the Estates, the improvements in the economic and cultural lives for the Barona Indians, and dramatic changes in agriculture with the avocado industry now a mere shadow of itself because of high water costs. The expanded book tells of rapid development of grape and wine production and the recognition of Ramona and the work that went into getting the area federally designated as an American Viticulture Area. Unicorn Books and Gifts is at 738 Main St. and may be contacted at 760-788-3700.

Teri was diagnosed with PKD about 22 years ago and was able to manage it with her doctors until her kidney function plummeted within the last year, forcing her to go on dialysis. A 41-3 home loss to St. Augustine began Ramona’s season, and the Bulldogs then lost to Point Loma by 2

points before a 28-27 win at Valley Center. Ramona never led Escondido by more than 14 points, and the Bulldogs never trailed. “We were sort of always in control,” Baldwin said. Varsity football to host Faculty Appreciation Night on Friday Each Ramona High School varsity football player will honor his chosen teacher or staff member in a ceremony before the home game on Friday, Sept. 25. The choices may come from kindergarten to high school. The teacher or staff member chosen by the player will wear that

Girls win tennis league opener By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s girls tennis team won its Valley League opener, defeating Orange Glen by a 13-5 score on the Patriots’ court. “It’s nice. We’ve had some tough matches against really big schools,” said coach Rose Darrough. “To come up in league against teams that are more like us is kind of nice.” The Bulldogs, who have a league match at Valley Center on Thursday, traveled to Canyon Crest for a Sept. 10 match that con-

cluded as an 18-0 Ravens victory. The closest the Bulldogs came to winning a set was when Tori Perfect and Betsy Dean lost in a tie-breaking game after they and their Canyon Crest counterparts were tied at six games apiece. The tie-breaking game is to 7 points, although a two-point margin is necessary for the win, and the Ravens prevailed by a 9-7 margin. “They played pretty well,” Darrough said. Ramona was to have played Carlsbad on Sept. 15, but that day’s storm made the match a meteo-

rological casualty. Perfect and Dean won all three of their sets against Orange Glen on Sept. 17. Ramona swept the doubles portion with Grace Berry and Toni Radeke also winning three sets along with Jessica Nelson and Amanda Abbot capturing wins against all three of their Patriots opponents. The only sweep in singles was by an Orange Glen player. Ramona’s Renee Hogervorst won two of her three sets while Elizabeth Bowersox and Hanna Kent prevailed in one set apiece.

Throwdown to aid human trafficking victims To support Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.), Neighborhood CrossFit in Ramona is hosting its second annual Throwdown fundraiser on Oct. 3, beginning at 8 a.m. Proceeds from the event will provide rehabilitation services for rescued victims and rescue missions. 6 < 9 H UVUWYVÄ[ group that rescues huTHU [YHMÄJRPUN ]PJ[PTZ PZ comprised of former Navy Seals, CIA Operatives and Special Ops Forces. victims they rescue around the world are child sex slaves. Since the beginning of 2014, O.U.R. has rescued more than 300 victims. Upon being rescued, victims are taken to safe houses for physical and emotional rehabilitation. Children who have been legitimately kidnapped are reunited with their families, according to the organization. Logistics and costs for each operation vary depending on the travel,

research, sting set-up, or working with governments in different countries. On average, O.U.R. said it spends $20,000 per operation and in one mission can save 1 to 50 victims. “We intend to rescue them all,” said organizers. Neighborhood CrossFit at 1114 14th St. is one of four gyms in California that will be hosting the worldwide O.U.R. Throwdown on Oct. 3. Poway Rodeo promises ‘a brand above the rest’ this weekend Poway Rodeo has long had the slogan: “A Brand Above The Rest. And nobody can argue with the claim considering all the top-notch talent it brings back year after year. Some of the best in the business will be here again for the 43rd annual Poway Rodeo, which opens with a single show Friday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Poway Valley Riders Association grounds. There will be two shows Saturday, Sept. 27 (1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.). “It’s amazing, Poway Rodeo committee member Nancy Kirchhofer said. “Wayne Brooks has been announcer of the year several times so he is the best you can get. Our rodeo stock company takes stock to the National Finals Rodeo every year so they are among the best you can get. And they are all wonderful people. Brooks will be back to do the announcing for the 12th straight year. The 2005, 2010, 2013 and 2014 Announcer of the Year is always a crowd favorite. Salt River Rodeo Company will be providing the livestock for the sixth straight year. The company has been in the business for about 20 years. Salt River is also providing the pick up men, Cody and Tanner Resor. This year’s rodeo clown is also a familiar face. J.J. Harrison, who recently turned 40, will be the specialty act at the

Poway Rodeo for the second time since receiving his Professional Cowboy Association membership in 2007. The last time was in 2012. “The crowd (at the Poway Rodeo) is fun and they are interactive, said Harrison, who is known for his fat-guy-clown suits and off-the-cuff comedy. “The people show up and they enjoy being entertained. They are not the most rodeo savvy group, but the people know they want to be entertained and I am going to work hard to do that. The Poway Rodeo was just shy of drawing 12,000 people over the three shows last year. The hope is to hit the 12,000 mark this year, which would mean the standing-room only space at the arena would be capped. “I hope we can hit that number, Kirchhofer said. It certainly will not hurt having food trucks available and a new bar area called “Hitching Post. The area will have one or two televisions showing all the rodeo action, catering to the people who do not like to sit in the bleachers. “Tickets will be a little less and it is for the people that would like to sit in a bartype area and watch the rodeo on TV, Kirchhofer said. “It will be a nice little feature. Children will once again have plenty to do, making the rodeo a family-friendly event. The always-popular kids’ rodeo events will include Mutton Busting –

Fitness Center offers 12-week body transformation program Ramona Fitness Center has added The Amazing 12 Week Physique by Paul McIlroy to its personal training lineup. The 12-week program is designed to bring the biggest aesthetic and functional change possible in the shortest possible time frame, through the manipulation of programming variables. What does this mean? “You’re going to get the results you’ve been trying to get for years, in 12 weeks,” said Shanna Martinez, the center’s training director. Results that participants re-

ceive through this program are perceived impossible the world over, Martinez noted. The fat loss, strength and physique that are attained in this short time frame are called typical of this program. “And results are guaranteed,” she added. “The unique way the strength training and cardio is programmed is responsible for such amazing results. Martinez will lead the program. “I am honored to have been chosen to deliver this program,” she said.

Martinez had to apply to teach the program. Then she went through a series of Skype interviews where her answers to questions received a score. This information was then put before a panel of people who included the creator of the program, Paul McIlroy. “I know how discerning they are about who they choose to teach the program, and even [OV\NO 0 HT JVUÄKLU[ PU T` knowledge and ability to teach, I was more than nervous,” said Martinez. “When I received an invitation to become an Amaz-

ing 12 coach, I was ecstatic. I NV [OYV\NO [OL ÄUHS WOHZL VM T` training in Nashville, Tenn., in early October with three intense days of education with Paul McIlroy himself. To become an A12 coach is a pretty big deal.” The Amazing 12 Week Physique uses a combination of weightlifting, powerlifting, cardio exercises and nutrition, but the exact method is a secret. The program will begin at Ramona Fitness Center on Oct. 26. Training hours are 8 a.m., 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. and a limited number of participants are al-

lowed per time slot. A total of 12 participants were allowed originally, but due to the program popularity more spaces were released last week. “This program will sell out,” said Martinez. Business Short Ramona Valley Grill closes Ramona Valley Grill closed its doors on Sunday, Sept. 20, as owners Don and Joyce Kohorst have sold the building and property, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page. There is no word on what the new owners have planned for the building at 344 Main St. The Kohorsts built the restaurant in 1987, and opened it as a Sizzler restaurant the following year. They operated it for 12 years. Since 2000, the restaurant operation changed hands a few times and separated from the Sizzler chain to become Ramona Valley Grill. Joyce Kohorst returned at the helm early this year when the lessee who was operating the restaurant became ill.

Holt takes over Bulldog wrestling program By JOE NAIMAN Matt Holt is the new head coach for Ramona High School’s wrestling program. “I’m just excited, and I’m glad that I’m inheriting a good program with a lot of opportunities,” Holt said. “I’m ready to start getting things going.” Steve Koch initially stepped down as Ramona’s wrestling coach in 2013, and David Tomaino took over for the 2013-14 season. When personal commitments caused Tomaino to step down after one season, Koch agreed to return for one year. “He did that for the program,” said Ramona High athletic director Damon Baldwin. “He knew we were in a bind.” After Koch completed his 23rd season as Ramona’s wrestling coach, he stepped down once again and the opening for his replacement was publicly posted. Holt saw that posting and contacted Ramona High Principal Chris King. Holt learned that King’s son wrestled, which indicated that the program would have support from the administration. Holt also determined that Ramona High School was similar to Sumner High School near Bonney Lake, Wash., where Holt wrestled when the school had approximately 1,200 students. “Even the small schools in California are bigger than most of the schools in Oregon or Washington,” he said. Holt moved from Oregon to Temecula last year and moved from Temecula to Solana Beach in August. He was an assistant wrestling coach at Lakeside High School in Lake Elsinore during the 2014-15 season. Although Holt has not previously been a high school head coach, he was also an assistant coach at Southern Oregon University and has been the head coach at the youth wrestling club level. Holt, a Washington state champion when he wrestled at Sumner High School and a collegiate all-Ameri-

can when he wrestled at Southern Oregon University, has also been based at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He placed third in the 2013 submission wrestling world championships and second in the 2014 world championships, and on Oct. 10 he will be in Turkey to compete in this year’s

world championships. “Matt has an incredible wrestling pedigree,” Baldwin said. “He brings a great competitiveness to wrestling and he’s coached.” Holt learned of his hiring as Ramona’s coach this month. “I’m looking forward to a very strong wrestling program,” Bald-

win said. “We’re looking forward to Matt Holt coming in and continuing the same tradition.” “They have a good strong wrestling program,” Holt said. “What I want to start working on is taking a good youth team and turning it into a state place level high school team.”

“I would highly recommend these assistance programs to anybody.” Bryon

September’s full moon is also called a Harvest Moon because more than 100 years ago the reĂ…LJ[LK SPNO[ MYVT P[ HSSV^LK MHYTLYZ to harvest their crops so late in the day. Harvest Moon is the designation for the full moon that occurs closest to when the Autumnal Equinox takes place in the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere, when the “imaginaryâ€? or “meanâ€? sun crosses the Earth’s celestial equator from the north to the south and the daylight and night are considered to be of equal duration. That event, the Autumnal Equinox, was to occur for Ramonans at 12:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Less than four days later, we should see the Blood Moon. The Autumnal Equinox ends the Northern Hemisphere’s summer season and begins its fall or autumn season. The next total lunar eclipse visible from Ramona should take place on Wednesday night, Jan. 31, 2018. An even longer period of a total lunar eclipse should occur on Monday night, Jan. 21, 2019. The reader is advised to “trackâ€? the moon’s path in the sky before it becomes totally eclipsed. If you do this, you should have an easier time spotting where the totally eclipsed moon is in the sky even though it has a reddish cast to it. Enjoy!
