County releases proposed Authors Day will showcase winery ordinance changes 11 writers, publishing forum By KAREN BRAINARD Three months after county staff held a workshop on proposed amendments to the Tiered Winery Ordinance, a draft of changes has been released for 45-day public review. To view the draft amendments, visit www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/ pds/advance/Winery.html. All comments must be received by 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23. The Tiered Winery Ordinance was adopted by the county Board of Supervisors in August 2010 and includes a boutique winery tier that allows for tasting rooms by right in conjunction with agricultural vineyard operations. “Since its adoption, a number of issues have arisen that affect the adequate implementation of the ordinance,” stated Joe Farace, group program manager with the county’s Planning and Development Services (PDS) in a letter to winery stakeholders. PDS held workshops on Jan. 17, 2014, and on July 1 to gather comments from winery owners. Both workshops were well attended by Ramona winery owners and also drew caterers and musicians who have provided food and acoustic music at the wineries. Questions regarding the legality or requirements for such

services at boutique wineries were part of the reason the county sought to clarify the intent and language in the ordinance. Among the draft amendments are the issues of sourcing of grapes, hosting events and serving food. The revisions still require that a minimum of 25 percent of a boutique winery’s production be from fruit gown on the premises, and no more than 25 percent can be from fruit grown or sourced from outside San Diego County. The changes do allow the sourcing of wine produced in the county for blending, but no wine produced outside the county can be sold in a tasting room or used for production. For boutique wineries, the draft amendTLU[Z WYVOPIP[ L]LU[Z KLÄUPUN [OLT HZ “the use of the site for organized activities or gatherings (other than wine production, wine sales, wine tasting, agricultural instruction and educational tours), including any activities or gatherings that are advertised or promoted.” *VTT\UP[` L]LU[Z KLÄULK PU [OL :HU Diego County Code (sections 21.201 21.208) may be allowed but are subject to applicable license by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, states the ordinance. OPINION

Custodians clean up disappointing mess On Oct. 9 our Ramona High School football team played Mt. Carmel at Mt. Carmel for their homecoming. They won, we lost, which may have bearing on what happened in the bathrooms on the visitor side but it shouldn’t have. I know two custodians who work for Mt. Carmel High School but live here in Ramona. When they went to clean the bathrooms after the game there were spitballs all over the walls and ceiling and mustard packets smashed between the toilet bowls and seats. It was, basically, a disgusting mess! This behavior is very disappointing and sad that we would treat another school this way. I’m sure this was probably the actions of just a few but nonetheless disgusting and disappointing. Is this how we want to be known? Absolutely not! I would hope that if anyone saw this happening, they would stop it. I hope this never happens again and we can be good guests when going to other schools. Parents, please talk to your kids about being respectful of other’s property. Melanie Strahan Ramona

A light on a hill It’s the middle of October and we are seeing the corporations “War on Christmas begin (chuckle, chuckle, snort). Each year they start selling Christmas decorations earlier. What gives? Oh yea, sales. OK, I can buy that (pun intended). This early display trend is also to be found by the owners of the lighted star overlooking Magnolia. I’m supposing it’s a Christmas star. One cannot be too sure about these things. I could be wrong. It is the middle of October after all. Maybe it’s a Columbus Day star, or a Halloween star. Could it be the fabled Turkey Day star? Ok, I’m going with the Christmas star — but I’d like to shed some light on this matter (ha ha, another pun). Do we keep baby Jesus mangers on our front lawns for four months? Or Christmas decorations on our houses for the same amount of time? I think the reason we don’t is because they lose their impact if we do. Don’t you think that excessive display of this religious star icon also diminishes its unique specialty? Marlene Edgemont Ramona

Guest Commentary

Questions for a school trustee By DON BIRKETT This brief missive is being directed to John Rajcic, who has referred to himself as a school board member, freelance writer, teacher, and college instructor. I have read your Guest Commentary in the Ramona Sentinel (Oct. 8, 2015). You should add the following names to your list of people whose words and ideas you have taken and attempted to claim as your own: Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Voltaire, General Eric Shinseki, Charles Bukowski, Daniel R. Mooney (author of Why Music?), Margaret Heffernan, Mahatma Gandhi, Whittaker Chambers, Marv Levy, General George S. Patton, Adam Burke, Lady Bird Johnson, Bill Cosby (good choice), Beverly Sills, Herbert Spencer, George M. Cohan, Sigmund Freud, Spencer Johnson, and Isaac Asimov. Regarding The Book of Ecclesiastes. Hemingway got it right, as did Pete Seeger. You, on the other hand, showed no understanding of King Solomon’s messages. I strongly suggest you read an Internet article written by Debra Conrad titled “Plagiarism, Ethics, and the Public Domain.â€? She writes, “Plagiarism is not a matter of legalities, it’s a matter of ethics.â€? She suggests that writers ask themselves, “do you, in your heart, feel it’s wrong to take something that someone else wrote and not give them credit? Or‌do you feel uncomfortable claiming authorship of something that someone else has written? If you are not comfortable with it, don’t do it.â€?

(Q1) As a school board member, freelance writer, teacher, and college instructor, what would you advise Ramona High School students about stealing (MerriamWebster) text for a school assignment, or better yet, for a college admission essay, and claiming it as their own work? You wrote, “Many times people say and write things they regret.â€? I don’t believe that you recognize, much less regret what you have done, but I accept your apology. Following an apology it is customary for the person who has apologized to cease the behavior in question. You wrote in the Ramona Sentinel (Aug. 13, 2015) that “individual schools, teachers and administrators who are successful in achieving important objectives must be rewarded and not treated similar to those [schools, teachers, administrators] who are less successful.â€? (Q2) To what objectives are you referring? Who would evaluate them, and how? (Q3) What sorts of rewards would you like to see distributed? Tea’d to address ‘taxifornia’ James V. Lacy, a frequent guest on Fox Business News Channel’s “Varney & Company,” will lead a talk titled Taxifornia: The Liberal’s Laboratory to Bankrupt America” at the Ramona Tea’d forum on Saturday, Oct. 31. The forum, open to the public, will be at Ramona Mainstage, 626 Main St. Seating is limited, so those planning to attend are advised to come early. Doors open at 11 a.m. The program begins at noon. Lacy will discuss the state of affairs in California and how the dominance of a one party system by Democrats is driving

Parade of Barrels ushers in Ramona Art and Wine Festival By JOYCE STRAND Six Ramona businesses are hosting wine barrels hand-painted by local artists in a “Parade of Barrels to usher in the third annual Ramona Art and Wine Festival. These unique wine barrels are on display before they are auctioned at the festival on Nov. 7. This year’s festival will be at a new, expanded location at Begent Ranch, 18528 Highland Valley Road, from noon to 5 p.m.

GXd N`c[\iËj YXii\c

Tickets are available at www.ramonaartandwinefest.net. Painted by area artists, the colorful barrels depict various miniT\YHSZ MYVT 9HTVUH ZWLJPÄJ pastoral scenes to distinctive designs and offer a special piece of art to display at home or business. Interested viewers can see the one-of-a-kind barrels at the following Ramona businesses, and can place a reserve bid without attending the festival by calling festival chair Elaine Lyttleton at 760-787-1102. A reserve bid means that, if no one bids higher at the live auction than the reserve amount, the reserve bidder’s credit card will be charged for the amount bid. ‹+*HYSVZ 9LZ[H\YHU[ Main St.; ‹,U]PZPVU *VSVY (SVTHZ (U[PX\LZ *V\U[Y` :[VYL Main Street, Ste. Tournament gives golfers a chance to improve their season standings Ramona High’s girls golf team plays its second round of the North County Conference Tournament Thursday, and coach Michael Gainey is keeping his eye on three players who each have a chance to qualify as individuals for the CIF championships. The rounds played at the North County Conference Tournament count towards a team’s and a player’s season CIF standings. Unlike the regular high school matches of nine holes, the girls play 18 holes both days of the tournament. On Oct. 20 (after this issue went to press), Ramona High played at St. Mark Golf Club, and on Oct. 22, were scheduled to play Twin Oaks Golf Course. Gainey said it did not appear the team would make it to the CIF championships but players Kaley Glotfelty, Lucy Conrad and Hayley Brinker each have an opportunity as individuals. “These players really

need to step up and play well at the North County event to hopefully bring their season averages down,” he said. CIF is expected to set the ÄLSK MVY [OL JOHTWPVUZOPW tournament by the end of this week, Gainey said, and he will know who made the cut and earned a spot to play. Glotfelty shot a 39 in league play at Fallbrook on Oct. 15, achieving the low score for her team, although Fallbrook took the win with a score of 262 to Ramona’s 290. “This was her best round of the season,” Gainey said of Glotfelty. “Her consistency has enabled her to

maintain the number one ranking on the team.” Ramona beat Fallbrook the day before at home at San Vicente Golf Resort, posting a 265, 45 strokes less than the visiting team. Three players shot in the 40s — Glotfelty had a 47 and Conrad and Brinker each had 48. The day before, Oct. 13, proved to be a tougher day on the links for the Bulldog girls. They lost at home to Valley Center, 298-275 in the league game. Elise Stickney had the low score for Ramona with a 54. The Bulldogs have a 3-7 league record and 6-8 overall record this season. —Karen Brainard

pet of the week EllEn, a 1-year-old Rex mix, and Portia, a 1-year-old Silver Marten mix, are two sweet girls in need of a new family to call their own. They were transferred into our care as part of Rabbit Rescue 2015, in which 83 rabbits were rescued from a Southern California farm. Since entering our care, they have received medical care, a nutritious diet and loving care for the first time in their lives. Ellen and Portia can be a bit shy, but are easy to handle and pick up. They would love to find a home together that will give them the care they need and the space to run and play. They will need to be housed inside where they can feel safe and comfortable. Ellen and Portia are available for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society’s Oceanside Campus at 572 Airport Road. To learn more about making them part of your family, please call (760) 757-4357.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
