Some have chosen to fuss about what and how others choose to do for their faith, and believing to let one’s light shine is not something to worry over. Deputies arrest 2 Marines for shooting at stop signs Two active duty Marines were arrested on several felony charges late Wednesday night, Oct. 21, after they allegedly drove around town shooting at stop signs from their vehicle, according to the sheriff’s Ramona station. Residents began reporting sounds of gunshots about 11 p.m., said Sgt. John Boyce. “We got multiple calls,” he said. The two Marines, a 20-year-old who was driving and a 21-year-old passenger, had been drinking, said Boyce. They used a 12 gauge shotgun to shoot at stop signs in areas around Haverford Road, Elm Street, Montecito Road and Olive Street, according to reports. Deputies were able to take the suspects into custody when they drove their vehicle into a lot at 1037 Olive St., and both were cooperative, said the sergeant. The shotgun was found unloaded on the passenger’s side of the vehicle, but boxes of ammunition were located inside, he said. The 21-year-old lives in Ramona and the 20-year-old lives on the base of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, but both are originally from out of state, he said. They were booked into San Diego Central Jail, which lists each one as being charged with four felonies: shoot ÄYLHYT MYVT H ]LOPJSL KPZJOHYNL ÄYLHYT MYVT ]LOPJSL PSSLNHS ÄYLHYT KPZJOHYNL ^P[O ULNSPNLUJL HUK ]HUKHSPZT over $400. Boyce said damages to the stop signs were estimated at $750. Their arraignment was set for Monday. Because the 20-year-old was driving, he was also charged as a minor operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol count of .05, said Boyce. There were no reports of injuries, he said.

Arts & Entertainment Exquisite Corpse and Its Shadow showcases Tuesday Nights artists For the sixth year, artist Helen Wilson invited her Tuesday Nights group of artists to play the game Exquisite Corpse. Their Exquisite Corpse and Its Shadow exhibit will be in The Art Center Ramona, 1140 Main St., Suite 208, from Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. A reception will be held in the center from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Those attending are welcome to wear costumes and told to prepare to have fun. In the game of Exquisite Corpse, the artists assemble a collection of images to form bodies. Invented by the Surrealists, the game earned its name from one of the initial writings, “Le cadavre / exquis / boira / le vin

for the exhibition. Once home, their body is the inspiration for a piece of art. The artists work in any material they want. The only obligations are to the art and to keep a sense of play — “after all, it is a game,” noted Wilson. This year they also worked with the tradition of the silhouette. The artists received an image of themselves as individuals to construct a silhouette that plays with the concept of their artistic shadow self. ¸5V VUL OHZ ZLLU HSS [OL ÄUished work, so this should be fun,” said Wilson. The artists include Antonia Cosentino, Karen James, Tracy Potter, Kathi Rothe, Marsha Cook, Nancy Winslow, Heidi Schlotfeldt, Cindy Dodson, Pa-

mela Underwood, Julie Z Weaver, Regina Wilson, Ralph Jensen, Helen Petre, Deb Eaton, Trinity Stewart, John Gardener, Lauren Chiara, Sarah Gutz, Stephanie Haas, Paula Riddle and Helen Wilson. The group has painters, sculptors, quilters, assemblage artists, collage artists, printmakers, book artists and mixed media artists, “ so the show is sure to be interesting,” said Wilson. All the artists are part of the Tuesday Nights class/group that Wilson facilitates. It meets once or more a month. Each meeting is built around one project idea, which culminates in an exhibit, “but mostly it is a way to advance creative skills while hanging with a great group of creative types,” said Wilson.

The goals are the building of an art community through exhibitions and socialization with other artists (“there is something to be said about breathing the air of other creative souls”), learning to critique your own and others’ work effectively, and developing [LJOUPJHS WYVÄJPLUJ` PU H ]HYPety of media and/or methods by planning, designing and completing projects. “It is about developing artistic energy through sharing with a larger community,” said Wilson. “Think of it as A Happening.” It is not a critique group and they do not jury their exhibits. For more information, email Wilson at studio@helenwilsonartist.com or visit the blog at tuesdaynights-thegameroom. blogspot.com/.

Drama classes to present holiday performances

Rehearsals are under way, Stewart said. “The shows are going well and I feel this will turn out to be a fun evening,” she said Stewart, co-owner of Bonham Bros. and Stewart Mortuary, 312 12th St., has a background in theater and in 2012 began staging productions in the mortuary’s chapel, which she dubbed BBS Playhouse.

This fall she is teaching a drama class at Olive Peirce Middle School with 12 students and a high school class with 21 students at MVA. Her middle school class has students from Olive Peirce, MVA and Juan Bautista de Anza charter school. Students participating in her high school class attend MVA, Ramona High or Montecito High School.

Juliana Stewart, who is in her third year of operating Out of the Box Players community theater, is now teaching drama at two Ramona schools and has lined up performances for the holiday season. “When Elves Strike” and “Four

Ramona High School’s 14-10 football win against Poway broke a two-game losing streak for the BullKVNZ NH]L 9HTVUH P[Z ÄYZ[ win in Palomar League play this year, and provided the Bulldogs’ homecoming game fans with a victory. “The most important element was beating a team which was ranked in the top ten in the county,” said head coach Damon Baldwin. “We did it with a very undermanned team that just played their hearts out. It was one of the most incredible football game experiences I think that Ramona has had in many years.” The Bulldogs never trailed in the Oct. 23 game, but Poway had the ball late in the fourth quarter. “They were driving to See FOOTBALL, page 12

Johnny Henry Dobson

October 21, 1931 - September 28, 2015 RAMONA — Johnny Henry Dobson passed away on September 28, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Joanne; cherished father of Bill, Bob and Nona; appreciative father-in-law to Kate; and joyful grandfather of Hank, Emma and Sam. Johnny was born in Clay County, Mississippi, on October 21, 1931. He was the youngest of James Henry Dobson and Nona Foote Dobson’s seven children. His father passed away when Johnny was two years old, an event which laid the foundation for his life dream to be a providing and nurturing husband and father. Growing up in the throes of the Great Depression, Johnny worked as a sharecropper with his family, tending to many crops including peanuts and cotton. In his later years he relished helping others gain perspective by sharing memories of this backbreaking work in the stifling heat and insufferable humidity of the South. He attended schools in West Point, Mississippi, where he developed a lifelong love of reading and learning about the world. As World War II consumed the country, Johnny’s sense of service and commitment began to come in to focus. He played on the football team at West Point High School, where his respect and appreciation for teamwork and camaraderie were lit while he played in the precision intensive single wing offense run by the Green Wave. Johnny enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately in 1949. Upon high school graduation he boarded a train for San Diego and basic training at the Naval Training Center. Ironically that would foreshadow the remainder of his life. Johnny’s first night in California was spent on the

train in the arid foothills of southeastern San Diego County within miles of where he would ultimately raise his family. Johnny was trained as a welder at the Naval Welding School in Great Lakes, Illinois. Early in his career he received various sets of orders, including one that placed him on a ship home ported in Los Angeles. It was in Southern California where Johnny met the love of his life. Working as a registered nurse in Los Angeles, Joanne Howe was introduced to the young sailor by relatives from both his and her families. They were married on October 2, 1955, and began a loving partnership that continues to endure. He served his country at sea and on shore through the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. The privilege to serve the United States of America with his trusted shipmates forged a love of country stronger than any metal a man might ever be asked to temper. When he retired in 1969 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, his 20 year Navy career as a damage controlman had enabled him to hone a unique talent for problem solving. Settling in Ramona, Johnny enjoyed success as a small businessman. After initially establishing and selling a refuse disposal service, he used his natural abilities and Navy experience to imagine,

create, and build a unique tool with application in the local poultry industry. Created in 1972, Pullet Express provided labor and equipment for the transportation of live chickens. Over the next 20 years it grew to be the largest owner operated business of its kind in Southern California. Pullet Express employed many people over the years, often giving a young man his first job and the opportunity to learn responsibility, hard work, and persistence. Johnny was generous with his time and resources to support young people in a wide range of enrichment activities including Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League, Youth Basketball, Arts Unlimited, 4-H, Ramona schools, the Bulldog Booster Club, Occidental College Tiger Club, West Point Parents Club, and Humboldt State Parents Club. No one smiled wider than Johnny when he saw a young person enjoying an opportunity which he had helped to provide. Johnny became very active in VFW Post 3783 in Ramona. His leadership helped to enhance and expand both the annual “Buddy Poppy” project and the Memorial Day flag placement program on veteran’s graves at several public and private cemeteries in Ramona and the backcountry. He was particularly proud of his role in locating and remembering Ramona native USMC Pfc. Ilario Garcia, who was killed and buried on Iwo Jima, and whose remains had been transported to an unknown California location after the war. His greatest joy was being outdoors at the family home he and Joanne built together. He affectionately named it Rancho Girasol, which means sunflower in Spanish and is the official

flower of his treasured wife’s home state of Kansas. The laughter and occasional tears of his children and then grandchildren, along with generations of their friends and other children playing, exploring, enjoying, and growing up a bit at his “place” was music to his ears. The overarching theme of Johnny’s life was one of service - to country, community, friends, and family. He will be remembered by shipmates at sea and on shore, by friends far and near, and by the family he held so dear for his work ethic, candor, humility, wry sense of humor, and perspective. The genuine smile familiar to all who knew him will live on in our hearts forever. He will be missed. Johnny Dobson was laid to rest with full military honors at Miramar National Cemetery on October 21, 2015, in a private family service. A public memorial celebrating his life will be held outdoors at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at VFW Post 3783, 2247 Kelly Street, Ramona, CA 92065. A memorial fund in Johnny’s name has been established to purchase new children’s tennis shoes for play or sport at Solutions for Change. Checks can be mailed to Solutions for Change, 722 W California Ave., Vista, CA 92083 - print in memo field: Johnny Henry Dobson - or donations can be made online at http://solutionsforchange. org - click the brown tab that says “Donate Today” - check the box “Dedicate my donation in honor or in memory of someone” - check the circle “in memory of” - type “Honorees name” Johnny Henry Dobson - then complete the form. RAMONA — Liam Douglas Humphries passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2015, in Austin, Texas, nine days before his 10th birthday. Liam’s passing was a result of Stage IV High Grade Glioblastoma; a deadly form of brain cancer that is extremely rare in young children. Liam was always valiant and courageous, especially in the past 7 months, both for himself and for those who knew and loved him. We are eternally grateful for the time we were given. Liam’s fight against cancer was an inspiration to all who met him. Quick to learn and able to apply intense focus on learning and understanding new things, he had a constant passion for everything ahead on the horizon. Liam’s favorite subjects at school were history and bible studies, from which he formed a deep faith. His inquisitiveness and creative imagination brought great joy to him and to those around him. Like most children of his age he loved cartoons, superheroes, Disney, children’s books and playing. He particularly loved music, swimming, video games and electronic gadgets. He loved playing golf and tennis with his sister and little league baseball with friends and classmates. He proudly had the opportunity to meet the San Diego Padres in May of 2015. Although Austin, TX, was Liam’s home for only a short time, Liam always had a great love for Texas, for his roots and for his family that still resides in Texas. Liam’s family will now all be together. Born in San Jose, CA, Liam spent his life living in Ramona, CA, a small town in San Diego County surrounded by the love of his parents, Martyn and Elizabeth Humphries, and grandparents, L.D. and Janice Romine. He was deeply spiritual, kind, loving and caring and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Liam is survived by his loving parents, Martyn G. Humphries and Elizabeth Romine-Humphries; maternal grandparents, L.D. Romine Jr., and Janice Romine of San Diego, CA; paternal grandmother, Pauline Humphries of the United Kingdom;

sister, Grace I. Humphries; brothers, Andrew M. Humphries and his wife, Nisha Doshi, and Jonathan M. Humphries of the United Kingdom; maternal uncle, L.D. Romine III; cousins, Sean and Austin Romine of San Diego, CA; and maternal great uncle and aunt, James and Judy Akridge of Austin, TX. Liam also says goodbye to many other loving family members in Texas, Oklahoma and the United Kingdom, as well as dear friends in Ramona, CA. Liam was provided loving and compassionate care from Dell Children’s Medical Center in conjunction with the Palliative Care Team at Dell Children’s in the final weeks of his short life. His wish to spend his final few days at home with his family was granted because of the support and teamwork by Dell Children’s, Palliative Care and Hospice Austin. He was cared for lovingly by his mother and father in the final days of his life because of their efforts. The Humphries family requests as an alternative to flowers that contributions be made to establish a palliative care room at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Liam’s name. Please send your contribution to: Dell Children’s Foundation, 4900 Mueller Blvd., Austin, Texas 78723, (512) 324-0108, www. supportdellchildrens.org. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at 10:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 W. William Cannon Drive, Austin, Texas 78749. (512) 892-1172. Condolences may be made at: www. cookwaldenforestoaks. com. Please sign the guest book online at legacy.com/ obituaries/ramonasentinel.

525 D St., Ste A Ramona, CA 92065 pet of the week Fantasia, a 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, is looking for a new best friend. After she was found as a stray in Oceanside, this pretty lady has continued to show her caregivers what a sweet and friendly girl she is. She loves to be around her people more than anything, especially when she can show off her good manners and friendly disposition. Fantasia would be the perfect pup for outdoor adventures or for snuggling on the couch. She’s always ready to play or go for a long walk, but settling down for a belly rub can be just as fun for her. Fantasia is a happy pup as long as she has a special person to share her love with - will it be you? Fantasia is available for adoption at san Diego Humane society’s Oceanside Campus at 2905 san Luis Rey Road. To learn more about making her part of your family, please call (760) 757-4357.
