San Diego County supervisors at their Dec. 2 meeting approved the allocation of $4,000 in a Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant to Kiwanis Club of Ramona Foundation for Project Lifesaver equipment. Kiwanis Club of Ramona supports the Project Lifesaver program that the sheriff's Ramona station operates by donating needed equipment each year. Project Lifesaver utilizes state-of-theart tracking technology to help deputies locate a missing person with Alzheimer's, autism, Down syndrome or dementia. The $4,000 will go toward the purchase of such equipment as battery testers, Tadiran batteries, transmitter, updated Osprey system and an emergency kit.

Ramonan warns of IRS scam

Project Lifesaver provides radio frequency wristbands to children and adults who may wander from their homes because of the aforementioned conditions. By utilizing the system, the recovery rate for a person missing is less than 30 minutes, according to Charlie Teichert Jr., Kiwanis Project Lifesaver coordinator. The late Gordon Zick, longtime Ramona Kiwanian and pharmacist, worked with the sheriff’s department to start the program in 2006, and Ramona Kiwanis, ^P[O Z\WWVY[ MYVT [OL JVTT\UP[` Änances the program with the cooperation of the sheriff’s station in Ramona. The professor said that about 55,000 more people are employed locally compared to this time last year, adding money to the economy and making people feel better about going shopping. Lower gas prices and a hike in the state's minimum wage in July should also help increase holiday spending, he said. Gin said the one drag on the region's economy was housing starts, which appear to be the result of a lack of available land and skilled labor. Demand for housing remains strong, he said.

What we learn from music By JOHN RAJCIC Listen to the lyrics of two contemporary poets/musicians, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffet. These are all attributes that are necessary in a democratic society. Music is team building as much as sports. Music is mathematical. It is history. It is physical education. Music teaches proper breathing and exercises the voice muscles. I know of no discipline where music can not be integrated to enhance learning or vice versa. All that it takes is an effective teacher, a willing student and supportive parents. A positive attitude and individual responsibility is basic for success in school and life. We teach music: 5V[ [OH[ ^L L_WLJ[ VUL [V THQVY PU T\ZPJ Not that we expect one to play or sing all one's life... Not so one can relax... Not so one can have fun, BUT: So one will be human... Explorer spends holiday with Ramona family Congregation to celebrate Randy and Pan Ayres welcomed a family friend and former neighbor for the Thanksgiving holiday as he passed through Ramona on his cross-continent travels by scooter. Mike Saunders, 28, left his home in Virginia in May and has logged 22,000 miles on his Honda Ruckus, seeing the countryside and meeting people along the way. At a maximum of 40 mph, Saunders takes the back roads and said of the slower pace: "It's an amazing way to take your time to see the scenery." Packed on his scooter are camping gear, food, water, clothes, tools, spare parts, gasoline, and bear spray for protection — he has seen grizzlies and black bears up close in the North. Touched by the hospi-

tality of many he has met, Saunders said he has been invited to dinners and has been offered places to sleep. In turn he has enjoyed helping others with all kinds of tasks, including herding cattle. "Locations are beautiful but people are great," he said. According to the former cartographer, he saved and lived frugally for two years so he could travel. "He's had an incredible journey," said Pan Ayres. Hanukkah in Town Hall

On Friday, Dec. 19, Congregation Etz Chaim will celebrate Hanukkah instead of holding their monthly Sabbath service. The holiday observance will be held in Ramona Town Hall, 729 Main St., at 7:30 p.m. Hanukkah, also known as The Festival of Lights, is a JLSLIYH[PVU VM SPILY[` HUK MYLLKVT Z`TIVSPaPUN H Ă„NO[ against all forms of totalitarianism. Everyone who is interested in participating in this Jewish tradition is welcome as spiritual leader Keith Liker lights the candles and leads the singing of the Chanukah hymn "Rock of Ages." Traditional holiday refreshments will be served. For more information, call 760-789-2781.

Besides Santa Claus, Luis and Tuesday are coming to town By HAROLD SCHACHTER On Tuesday, May 3, 2011, "Until Tuesday" was released. It was to become a New York Times best-seller for many months. On Tuesday, May 27, 2014, another book, "Tuesday Tucks Me In," was released. Was the day of release, Tuesday, just a oinciBook Review cdence or was it by design? The principal author of both of these books is the much decorated former U.S. Army Capt. Luis Carlos Montalván, a combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and a wounded warrior. Tuesday is the name of his service dog, a golden retriever. Montalván and Tuesday will be coming to Ramona to make two presentations in the Ramona Branch Library Community Room. On Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m., he will speak about how they saved each other.

This true story is recounted in "Until Tuesday." While this reviewer does not consider himself an animal or pet person as his late wife was, this book was a riveting education of what a service dog is. If you, the reader, didn't know, "Until Tuesday" will teach you and you will be amazed at what these service dogs are trained to do for their disabled master or mistress. Montalván is 54 years old. He trained to be a soldier when he was a teenager. Tuesday was trained to be a service dog from the age of 3 days after he was born. He can open and close doors, turn lights on and off, fetch, and respond to 140 different verbal commands. Montalván believes that Tuesday can read his mind and knows what his master is thinking even before he is aware of it. On Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 10:30 a.m., Montalván and Tuesday will again appear in the library's Community Room

to talk about his second book, a young children's book, "Tuesday Tucks Me In." The amazon. com website proffers that "Tuesday Tucks Me In" is age-appropriate for 4- to 8-year-olds or for children in kindergarten through the third grade. "Until Tuesday" is 251.3 pages, divided into 24 chapters and an epilogue, which is like a 25th chapter. So you can mathematically see that a chapter averages about 10 pages. It is a quick read and contains archival black and white photographs but no index, bibliography or notes. The book is divided into three parts. Part I is about Tuesday and is roughly 15 percent of the book. Part II is about Luis and takes up roughly 25 percent of the book, and Part III is about Tuesday and Montalván and constitutes about 60 percent of the book. This reviewer found most of this book age-appropriate for pre-teens on up,

but a minor's parents or guardian is cautioned that certain segments of Part II may NOT be age-appropriate for youths since it relates the violence of Montalván's experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. As testament to both books' high praise by their readers, as

of Wednesday, Dec. 3, "Until Tuesday" had garnered 1,881 reader-reviewers' ratings on the amazon.com website, 88.94 percent of whom had accorded it 5 Stars out of 5 Stars maximum. And an additional 6.7 percent of reader-reviewers had accorded it a 4-Star rating, so you don't have to take this reviewer's word for it. With regard to "Tuesday Tucks Me In," it had garnered 214 reader-reviewer ratings of which 95.70 percent have accorded it 5 Stars, and an additional 2.34 percent have rated it 4 Stars. Montalván has graduate degrees from Columbia University and has been an oped contributor to many major newspapers, so he is an experienced writer. If you can attend either of his appearances in Ramona, this reviewer believes that you will ÄUK P[ [PTL ^LSS ZWLU[ HUK IL glad you did.

By NANCY SAPPER The silver lining to Helix’s football team continuing on to the CIF championships on Dec. 6, and Ramona’s football season abruptly ending, is that Helix’s wrestling team is missing a few members who are still playing football. The absence of these players caused Helix to default two weight classes when they couldn’t afford to, and ultimately lose the match Dec. 4. Bulldog football players Raul Briseno, Dallas Domnitz, Leo Duron, Trevor Johnson and EJ Schmidt joined the wrestling team, already in progress, once Helix ended the Bulldogs' playoff dreams. They and their fellow wrestlers were ready to face the Highlanders once again. The evening started with the 106 weight class. Freshman Cade Erautt was pinned and the score was 0-6 Helix. A string of wins by Jordan Castro, Devon Parsons and Logan White kept

Ramona in the match, but the team was SVVRPUN H[ H KLÄJP[ NVPUN PU[V Troy Jordan’s 170-pound bout. Jordan, one of a trio of captains this year, pinned his opponent and pulled the score to 21-29. Next to wrestle was senior Brian Fonseca in the 182 weight class. He fought hard and was able to pin his opponent, bringing the Bulldogs within 2 points of the Highlanders. This was the momentum turning point in the match. Captain Austin Koch was exactly who the Dawgs needed in the next bout of the night. Charles Junior ‘Charlie’ Scruggs

amona Sentinel

1936 – 2014 In the early morning of November 20, 2014, Charlie passed away very peacefully at home surrounded by family after a two year battle with cancer. He was born in the town of Rose Bud, Arkansas, on January 12, 1936, the son of Dorton (father) and Troy (mother) Scruggs. Charlie joined the military at the age of 19 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton where he

met his wonderful wife, Laverna. They had three beautiful children and settled down in Ramona, CA. After six years of military service, Charlie started a career with the United States Forest Service, where he retired after 36 years of service. Charlie loved working with the forest service and after retiring he couldn’t stay away. He began working at the Ramona Air Base. He worked there until he got sick with cancer in 2012. He would always tell his family that as soon as he got better he would be back out there ďŹ lling up those planes. Charlie always liked to keep busy, whether it was working at the Air Base or building things at home. He loved hunting and ďŹ shing, especially with his wife, Laverna, and children. Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Laverna Fae Scruggs; parents, Dorton and Troy Scruggs; brother, Justin Scruggs; and sister, Leann. He is survived by his daughter,

Sheila (Joe Rodriguez); two sons, Bryan (Gina) and Rex (Jane); and grandchildren, Kendra and Kyle, and Tyler and Justin. There will be a viewing and services on December 11, 2014, at 11am at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary, 225 S. Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025. Following the services a reception will be held at the Ramona Air Base, 2498 Montecito Rd., Ramona, CA 92065. Condolences can be sent to 322 B St., Ramona, CA 92065. We would like to thank everyone at the Ramona Air Base for everything you have done and all the support you have given us. Our family truly appreciates it.
