Trustees to approve employee contracts Proposals call for 2.1 percent raises BY MAUREEN ROBERTSON Ramona Unified School District trustees are expected to ratify two contracts during their meeting on Thursday: one with Ramona Teachers Association and one with the union that represents the district’s support staff. Both contracts call for the district to continue paying 85 percent of health benefits for eligible employees, with employees paying 15 percent. If approved, all employees represented by the two unions will receive a 2.1 percent raise, effective Jan. 1, and a 2.3 percent salary bonus retroactive to July 1 through Dec. 31. Apparently in response to a nationwide teacher shortage, the proposal also calls for a $7,500 signing bonus for credentialed teachers in subjects deemed in high demand. The bonus will be paid in three installments, with the third received when the teacher reaches tenure status. Details of both contracts are on the district website: www.ramonausd.net. The fiscal impact of each contract is on the front door of the district office, 720 Ninth St. In other business at the Dec. 15 meeting, Assistant Superintendent David Ostermann will present a budget update titled First Interim Report. The state requires school districts to periodically provide financial reports to trustees and, once approved by trustees, to file them with the state. According to Ostermann, the update shows changes in income and expenses compared to the budget trustees approved in June. “In reviewing the multi-year projection, RUSD will be able SEE CONTRACTS, A18
"A Band-Aid on a gushing wound," "a rubber band," " a waste of money." Residents attending Caltrans' Dec. 7 open house gave a variety of descriptions for the state agency's latest proposed safety measures that are estimated to cost $7.15 million for the collision-plagued state Route 67 . The state transportation agency is proposing to install flexile channelizer posts along the highway's median from Willow Road in Lakeside to Shady Oaks Drive in Ramona. The posts would
be placed 12 feet apart in straight sections and 6 feet apart where there are curves. Where driveways are located — there are about 130 in that stretch — no posts would be installed, said Caltrans. Officials acknowledged the posts are more of a visual barrier to delineate between opposing lanes of traffic and to alert drivers who begin to cross over, similar to the rumble strips that were added around 2006. “It’s very flexible, goes right, left, and goes back to the original position,” Caltrans Project Manager SEE CALTRANS, A2

FROM CALTRANS, A1 Jose Robles said of the channelizers. “It’s going to be really reflective at night.” “It will dent your car so you don’t want to hit it,” said Gerard Chadergian, branch chief of Caltrans traffic operations. If need be, emergency vehicles could cross through the channelizers, officials said. The biggest concern among many, however, was preventing head-on collisions, the cause of two recent fatalities in the Mt. Woodson area, and the call continued for concrete barriers in the centerline. “Is that popsicle stick going to stop cars from crossing over yellow lines?” asked resident Dixie Labbe. Concrete barriers, also known as k-rails, was an option Caltrans presented three years ago, but concerns included access to driveways, access for emergency vehicles to reach a scene, and accidents caused by vehicles hitting and bouncing off the barriers. "Every decision has unintended consequences,” said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Amado Macias. If a resident or emergency vehicle could not make a left-hand turn out of a driveway and instead had to turn right, drive up to an opening in the barrier and make a u-turn, that presents a danger, he said. Caltrans District 11 Division Chief Marcelo Peinado said they reviewed the impacts of concrete barriers and studies showed the level of service worsening. “We don't care about traffic; we care about life," commented Shawna Schick, who said she has reached out to lawmakers and government officials about finding a solution to prevent the head-on collisions.

To really fix SR-67, it needs to be widened to four lanes, said Peinado. San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) updated its Regional Transportation Plan last year and projected SR-67 widening to four lanes from Scripps Poway Parkway to Dye Road to occur between 2040 and 2050. The cost to widen from Gold Bar Lane in Lakeside to Dye Road is estimated at $1.34 billion. Twice in the past voters have approved a SANDAG sales tax for transportation and nothing has happened for SR-67, said resident Woody Kirkman. “It’s always 30 years down the road,” he said. Kirkman and others suggested Caltrans could widen the highway a small section at a time, such as one mile a year. Peinado said to do that an environmental impact report would have to be completed for the whole area. Other suggestions included creating frontage roads for driveways off SR-67 so concrete barriers would not be a problem, or installing a combination of measures such as k-rails from Mina de Oro to Archie Moore Road. Robles said he would look into that. In addition to the channelizers, Caltrans plans to add changeable message signs (CMS) just before three major intersections on SR-67 to alert drivers of real time accidents and allow them the opportunity to take an alternate route. Those signs would be placed northbound before Winter Gardens Boulevard and before Poway Road, and southbound in advance of Scripps Poway Parkway. The CMS stations will have closed circuit TV cameras that will be able to monitor the highway for about half a mile and will help authorities mitigate operational impacts during emergency impacts, according to Caltrans. "Very excited about that," said Macias, noting that a CMS was used to alert drivers of the Dec. 3

Christmas tree lighting in Ramona and, as a result, significantly reduced traffic through town. A CMS station is not proposed for southbound SR-67 at the Highland Valley/Dye Road intersection because that is not within the centerline project area, said Caltrans engineers. Parking along SR-67 for the Mt. Woodson trail was also noted as a problem. Although the highway opens up to two lanes on each side there, drivers are sometimes reluctant to travel in the right lane for fear someone in a parked car will suddenly open his door or a vehicle will stop and back up for a parking spot. “That kind of puts a slower vehicle in the left lane,” said Darryl Hazlitt, who owns Velocity Paintball Park. He and his wife, Denise, said their business cell phone number is on their vehicle and they have received phone calls from drivers behind them complaining they are going too slow. More patrolling by CHP was suggested to get traffic to slow down, but Macias said their resources are limited. “The reality is every business has a finite limit of resources,” he said. Construction of the channelizers is expected to begin early next year and take about seven months, said Robles. The channelizer alternative creates no significant environmental impact, he said. Residents were invited to submit comment cards — about 75 attended — and Robles said they will look at all the suggestions and concerns. Comments on the centerline project will be accepted until Dec. 30 and may be emailed to: CT.Public.Information.D11@dot.ca.gov. Santa visits Ramona VFW Santa spent four hours at Ramona Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783 Saturday hearing the Christmas wishes of the children of active duty service members and VFW members. The event was a way to ensure that active duty service families, particularly those living in Ramona Vista Housing, had the opportunity to have their children’s photos taken for free with Santa. “That’s what it’s all about,” said Post Commander Doug Scholl, pointing to
8-day-old Ander Briggerman, who sat on Santa’s lap for the first time. Ramona High School photography teacher Tim Hall, a Navy veteran, set up the lights, and Hailey Henshaw, a Ramona High School junior in Hall’s Photography 2 class, took the photos. Using a Canon compact photo printer, Henshaw gave the families high-quality prints of their children with Santa. The families then had the opportunity to use Christmas Magnet Frame Crafts to design a frame for each photo.

City News Service—A Ramona property manager and his company were charged Monday with four counts of wire fraud in connection with a scheme to defraud a homeowners association of $247,000. Robert Walsh, 37, allegedly made false claims that his firm, Cornerstone Management Professionals Inc., could properly submit bids to the homeowners group for construction projects and concealed lower bids to make it appear that he was the low bidder. The indictment seeks forfeiture of $247,000 from the defendants and alleges that in March 2015 they sent an email seeking a change order from the HOA to cover the cost of asbestos removal. According to prosecutors, the defendants then sent an email to the contractor working on the project, falsely stating that there was no asbestos present in order to get the contractor to conclude the demolition project without involving an asbestos abatement firm so the defendants could retain the entire value of the change order. “The public health dangers of asbestos exposure are well known,”' said Jay Green, special agent in charge of the Environmental Protection Agency's criminal enforcement program in California. “Materials containing asbestos must be handled safely and legally.” Walsh's next court date, a hearing for arraignment and status of counsel for the corporate defendant, is scheduled for Dec. 22.

SDG&E and the second bite of the apple BY DIANE CONKLIN San Diego Gas & Electric is once again asking the California Public Utilities Commission to reach into your pocket for costs of their 2007 fires. For the second time since the Witch, Guejito and Rice fires ripped through San Diego County killing two people, destroying more than 1,300 homes and disrupting many more thousands of lives, the monopoly utility is asking for ratepayers to pay uninsured costs of the fires — $379 million dollars to be exact. The last time SDG&E tried this, they were beaten back by the Mussey Grade Road Alliance and other parties who fought them tooth and nail at the commission. At that time, SDG&E (initially allied with Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas & Electric) filed an application called WEBA — Wildfire Expense Balancing Account. This was a long-term plan to make it easier for the utilities to collect from ratepayers for fires and, in 2012, it rightfully failed. Now SDG&E is back again trying to get the money — we estimated an average of nearly $400 per household — from people who were burned out by the fires, as well as everyone else in their service territory. They were allowed to take this second bite at the apple because the commission didn’t kill the ask completely. So this time they are coming forward with a second application called WEMA — Wildfire Expense Memorandum Account — and they expect to win. But the one thing SDG&E never counted on in their first go-round was you, the people of Ramona and the backcountry, as well as hundreds of others from around San Diego County, who told the commission “Hell, no!” More than 600 people showed up at the public participation hearings the Mussey Grade Alliance fought for in 2012, and the judge and assigned commissioner listened to them for more than six hours. After that, the application was in serious trouble — no longer an easy take because it was NOT ignored by the people it would most affect. And it was the voices of the people that made the difference, no doubt about it. Now you have another chance to again tell the commission you don’t want to pay for SDG&E’s fires. There will be two public participation hearings in Escondido on Jan. 9 at the California Center for the Arts Escondido, 340 North Escondido Blvd., starting at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m. You can make the difference again. This is the last time you will have to do this because this is SDG&E’s last card to play. SDG&E hopes you don’t show up. We hope you do. Defeating this SDG&E money grab is more important than ever. If the company wins, it will set a precedent at the commission that will be harder to overcome in the future. Once they are paid for their own lack of prudence, they will expect to get paid again if they cause more fires. Worse, SDG&E will be arguing to the commission that the wind speeds and prevailing conditions at the time of the fires were unknown to them. But the utility knew SEE SDG&E, A6

Tips for charitable giving BY JUDI STEADMAN It’s that time of year again where the old adage holds true — it’s better to give than receive. When we give, especially around the holidays, it makes us feel fulfilled — like we have made a small difference in someone’s life. According to Charity Navigator, “31 percent of all annual giving occurs in the month of December and 12 percent of that annual giving occurs on the last three days of the year.” Navigating the waters of charitable giving can seem difficult with the hustle and bustle of the season — what organization do I donate to, what should I give, and will I get a tax receipt? So, in the spirit of giving, here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind when making a charitable donation during the holidays: 1. Give to legit charities — only donations to qualified charitable organizations are tax-deductible. This includes gifts of cash, stock, real property or cars. All gifts must be itemized and substantiated on your tax return so be sure to get a charitable receipt acknowledgment when you donate and keep your bank records, canceled checks and credit card statements as a backup. 2. Do your homework — if you are unsure about the organization’s charitable status, check with Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org) or search the IRS website (www.irs.gov). Also, take some time to review the organization’s website and annual report to make certain your money is directly making an impact. At Susan G. Komen San Diego, we make every penny count. In fact, every dollar is earmarked to treating and curing breast cancer. 3. Get involved — make sure you feel connected to the organization you decide to donate to by volunteering, taking a tour of their offices or attending an event so you see firsthand how the organization is making a difference. 4. Small gifts can make a BIG difference — Just starting your career? It’s OK to start small. Try making a small cash donation or sign up for monthly giving. Monthly giving is a great way to try out a charity and see if it is a good fit. Each month
the amount you designate will be automatically processed. It is a quick and meaningful way to help. 5. Explore Planned Gifts — This is one of the easiest ways to give without impacting your financial portfolio in your lifetime. By including an organization in your will or living trust, you are leaving a legacy of hope without affecting your cash flow today. You can include a simple bequest with a stated amount or a more detailed bequest with a percentage of your estate. You can also make the charitable organization the named beneficiary of your life insurance or give a portion of your retirement assets. Be sure to let the organization know you have included them in your estate plans so you can be thanked properly in your lifetime. 6. Did you know? — If you are age 70½ or older you can take advantage of your Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA. In legislation at the end of 2015, Congress made the QCD option permanent. You can transfer gifts up to $100,000 annually directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable organization. This type of gift can make an immediate impact for an organization and for you too as no tax is generated on the minimum distribution you are required to take. 7. There are so many ways to give — Gifts of outright cash, appreciated assets like stocks, or real property are always a great option to assist a charitable organization and to benefit you come tax time. Each type of gift provides charitable tax deductions and/or the alleviation of the payment of taxable gains on the appreciated value of the stocks or real property. For more detailed information on tax benefits of charitable giving or estate planning, please seek the assistance of your financial professional or tax accountant. On behalf of Susan G. Komen San Diego, I would like to acknowledge each and every one of our generous donors who have supported us in 2016. Thank you for giving the gift of hope. We wish you and your family a very happy holiday season and a prosperous new year! Judi Steadman is director of Individual & Planned Giving for Susan G. Komen San Diego.

We are now in the Winter season of the real estate market. This is the time where quite a few sellers remove their homes from the market “not to be bothered” by showings. Unfortunately for them, the buyers that are looking right now are serious buyers and the inventory of homes available is lower so competition is limited. This is actually a really good time to have your home on the market. For Buyers: Interest rates have started to inch up and this will start to limit the buyer’s purchase power, so if you have a pre-approval for a loan it would be a good idea to check with your lender and see if your loan approval amount has been affected.

that these conditions could happen based on their own studies. They knew because they had the experience over the years to tell them that hot dry conditions fueled by Santa Ana winds cause fires if there is a spark from their lines. And that’s exactly what happened. If SDG&E can collect, even knowing the danger, then what incentive will they have to be more careful in the future? They know that the commission may, if there is little resistance from the people, award them millions and millions of our dollars. Will SDG&E work harder in the future to prevent fires igniting from their equipment if they get paid for the massive 2007 fires? It is as simple as rewarding the child who eats the cookies when they were told not to eat the cookies. You don’t reward a child for eating the cookies. Come out and tell the commission you don’t want SDG&E rewarded either. Sheriff’s Ramona station now on Twitter The sheriff’s Ramona station has set up a Twitter account, @sdsoramona, in an effort to disseminate information to residents. “We’re hoping the word gets out,” said Sgt. Robert Samuels, adding that he’s also hoping those who are sharing comments about a questionable incident on Facebook pages can get the real story through the new communications tool. Among ways the Twitter account will be used will be to alert residents to “be on the lookout” or ask if they have seen a particular person. The station will also try to put in noteworthy arrests, said the sergeant. It won’t be an instant source of information and it won’t be 24/7, he said, but “hopefully it will be a good source of information.” In other business, sheriff’s deputies arrested a 41-year-old Ramona man for petty theft and possessing stolen property from a church after he was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance on Dec. 6. Samuels said they recognized the man as the suspect in a video supplied by Apostolic Assembly of Ramona, 421 19th St., following a church theft on Nov. 25. Reported stolen was a propane tank, valued around $60, he said. Among other reports at the station:

Power outages affect West Ramona
Residents in areas of Highland Valley Road and West Ramona were without power Sunday night and Monday morning after two separate incidents occurred, according to San Diego Gas & Electric. Around 7 p.m. Sunday, 2,700 customers lost power but within an
hour electricity was restored to 2,336 of those customers, the utility said. Dan Summers, who lives near Highland Valley and Rangeland roads, was one of those who still did not have power Monday morning. He said when he looked out his
window toward Ramona Airport just before 7 Sunday night he saw a big white flash that extended about 200 feet in the air, and half a second later the power was out. “It looked like a firework went off the ground,” said Summers. As of Monday afternoon, SDG&E
was still investigating the cause of that outage. Another power outage, which occurred in that area early Monday morning, was determined to be caused by a bird coming in contact with a utility line. SDG&E said 260 customers were without power Monday, but electricity was restored to all of the customers by 12:30 p.m.

Leaving town for the holidays? Members of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Senior Volunteer Patrol perform vacation checks. Each home is checked at least once a day for up to six days per week while homeowners are away. During the check, volunteers pick up any newspapers or other evidence of a vacant home, verify that doors and windows are locked, observe the property, and notify either the homeowner or a designated contact person if necessary. If they see any suspicious activity, they call a sheriff’s deputy. To receive a free home check while on vacation, visit the sheriff’s Ramona station at 1424 Montecito Road. To save time, print the Vacation Check form near the bottom of the sheriff’s website, www.sdsheriff.net, and bring it to the station.

Falconers train birds of prey at Torrey Pines Gliderport Total Raptor Experience headquartered in Ramona BY MARÍA JOSÉ DURÁN hen David Metzgar, a falconer and biologist at University of California San Diego, first tried parahawking in Nepal, he thought, “It just struck me that Southern California is such an amazing place to fly, as are the foothills of the Himalayas ... so the Torrey Pines Gliderport was the best place to try and teach some birds to fly with me.” Parahawking is an experience offered in few places in the world. It consists of a tandem paragliding flight with an instructor alongside a bird of prey, which is used to help find the thermals (columns of rising air) during the flight. “Birds have a yet unexplained ability to sense where that rising area is in the atmosphere, and they lead us to it. It’s also a really unique opportunity to just commune with birds by actually flying around in their environment with them,” said Metzgar. This experience is not yet available at the Torrey Pines Gliderport, but Metzgar is working on it. His wife Antonella Zampolli left her career as a biologist at The Scripps Research Institute three years ago to become a full-time falconer. She is trying to familiarize her birds with the world-famous flying site. “This is a fantastic place all around to get them trained, socialized, acquainted with gliders and seeing a lot of wings up in the sky. There are not that many places where you can do that, but you only have to look around and see how perfect this place is,” she said. A peregrine falcons population in the area is an obstacle to flying free for the couple’s lanner falcons. “The peregrines are very aggressive and territorial, and they dive bomb the lanner birds when they see them

They describe Sophia as communicative and Bunco as silent. because they are competition,” said Metzgar. “While the lanner falcons are trained not to hunt, they attempt to defend themselves ... but there is little defense against the (bigger) peregrine falcon. Our hope is that eventually the peregrines will tire of chasing them around, and realize they are not doing any harm.” Metzgar and Zampolli both hold doctorates in biology and are paragliding pilots. They met flying at the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Zampolli, who hails from Italy, said the gliderport has a special meaning for her. “I became a paraglider pilot because I came to work at The Scripps Research Institute and I would walk here and see people flying all the time. I said, ‘Oh, I have to try that out,’ so five to six years later, I met Dave.” Zampolli, Metzgar and Terry Lockwood are the founding members and instructors of Total Raptor Experience, a company created in 2014 that combines their three passions — paragliding, birds of prey and ecology — to spread knowledge about wildlife and conservation. They offer education services with group experiences, flight demonstrations, owl encounters and ecology discussions. “There’s less and less environment and natural places for these birds, so what we’re doing here is bringing

Master Falconer Terry Lockwood and Henson, a 2-year-old Eurasian Eagle Owl weighing 6 pounds. these birds for up-close experiences, so people will better remember them and their needs,” Zampolli said. The company’s headquarters are based out of Lockwood’s home in Ramona, where she has built habitats for the birds and farm animals exclusively from recycled materials. “We do some of our programs there, we do an owl encounter, the hawk-falcon-owl, and we also add farm fun,” Lockwood explained. Falconry Lockwood has been a falconer for 14 years.
“Falconry is 4,000 years old, the oldest sport in history, and the most amazing form of bird watching you can ever experience,” she said, adding that the specialty doesn’t consist of teaching birds how to do tricks. “By definition, falconry is using a trained bird of prey to catch wild quarry.” Birds of prey were widely used in the past as a way to put food on the table, she continued. “People recognized that this was a way of feeding their family, because other than that you had bows and arrows (to kill game), and if it was up to me
with a bow and arrow, I’d die (laughs). It became very popular up until the invention of the gun.” Being a falconer is a commitment of time and money. Lockwood takes her birds hunting four times a week when it’s the season. “I go hiking, sometimes into some very un-nice areas, because where the bird goes, so I go,” she said. “The bird flies free, following me in the field, as I’m beating on the bushes and shrubs looking for game to run out. The falcon flies after it and catches it. Then my birds get their daily ration of food, and I take the rest of it and freeze it.” Metzger added that birds of prey can also be used for pest control. “These guys are the most effective pesticide in the planet,” he said. “People don’t realize when they poison their prey items, the birds eat the poisoned animals, and they are much more sensitive than the mammals are. In the long run, people who use poison usually end up with more rats and mice.” —Total Raptor, 326 Oak St., Ramona, totalraptorexperience.com. Veteran speaks about his service dog at PGA tournament During a special ceremony at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz., Army veteran and former Ramona resident Randy Dexter shared how his service dog helps him overcome the lasting effects of combat trauma. The Veterans Day military appreciation event was hosted by Stryker, the Official Joint Replacement Products of the PGA TOUR® and PGA TOUR Champions®, which began partnering with K9s For Warriors in April. Stryker pledged to sponsor service canines as part of its PGA TOUR program. Dexter, who moved from Ramona to Las Vegas in June, is a graduate of K9s For Warriors, a nonprofit organization that rescues and trains service dogs. K9s For Warriors matches the service dogs with veterans living with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) or other trauma as a result of post-9/11 military service. In April 2013, Dexter attended Operation Saddle Up, a program for wounded warriors at Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center in Ramona and moved to the
community several months later. He relocated to Las Vegas to attend the University of Nevada. For many, the battle scars received during combat have a lasting impact that Dexter said leave men and women “lost, broken and looking for some strength.” A seasoned combat medic, Dexter was deployed twice to Iraq and spent more than two years on the front lines. Of all the comrades and civilians he treated, one stuck out in his mind. On April 5, 2005, Dexter responded to an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Baghdad, Iraq, where he treated the driver of a squad vehicle who later died. Dexter began suffering from symptoms of TBI and PTSD, and medically retired in 2013. After months of self-medication, Dexter learned about K9s For Warriors. Shortly after, he was paired with Captain, who graduated the program with him in 2014 and has walked “hand in paw with him” ever since. During the Nov. 11 event in Arizona, Air Force Veteran John Murray, Stryker’s director of government business, presented a

K9s For Warriors was started by Shari Duval, whose son, a former

The sheriff’s Ramona station offers a few holiday safety tips. Among them: • Keep the outside of your home well-lighted – leave lights on inside your home when you are gone. • Make sure all your door and window locks are working well – and use them! • Don’t make it easy for burglars to look in your front window and see all those beautiful gifts under the tree –the temptation could be too much for them. • Remember to take everything of value out of your car when you get home – it’s easier for the thief to break into your car than your home. • Be aware of your surroundings when you park at the shopping center — pick a well-lighted spot and look around before you get out of your car.

Tree Lighting
A
n estimated 1,000 people filled Downtown Ramona’s Main Street and visited shops for the 24th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Presented by Ramona Chamber of Commerce, the three-hour event featured free photos with Santa in Ramona Town Hall, sleigh rides, a car and motorcycle show, carolers, dancers and other entertainment, and the Find the Elf Contest. Main Street was closed from Sixth to Seventh streets to make room for the car and motorcycle show, a stage and viewing area, and easy access for pedestrians to go from store to store and to have photos taken in front of the Christmas tree at the Guy B. Woodward Museum at 645 Main St. Among the attractions was Russell, Ramona resident Lindsay Lawlor’s walking, talking and dressed for the holidays robot. The robotic creation stands 17 feet tall when its neck is raised. Youngsters loved it and kept Lawlor busy answering questions. “Our many hardworking people came together to make an event like this happen,” said chamber director and event chair Lezley Knott. “It takes a village to put on something like this. I’m honored to work with such a great group of people.”

Dawson Castro prepares to wrestle against a San Marcos player last Tuesday. Nathan Kiddoo (120) scored a pin at the beginning of the second period. After Jeffery Ramsthaler won his 126-pound match 10-4 over Christian Naveda, Ramona seemed to have a commanding 21-0 lead. Jordan Castro (132) lost a tough decision 1-0 to Erik Marquez and then San Marcos scored pins in the next four matches as Jacob Rodriguez (138), Broc Holabird (145), Gage Bailey (152) and James Richards (160) all succumbed to their opponents. Brandon Setterberg (170) helped close the score to 25-27 with a major decision over Jackson Palmer 13-2. Ramona did not have a wrestler in the 182 weight division, and after

BY DAN BROWN Ramona hosted Division 1 powerhouse San Marcos in their first dual meet of the season, coming up on the short end of a 43-31 score. San Marcos is the two-time Division 1 CIF dual and individual champion. Although San Marcos has lost some key people from last year’s squad, it is still a very strong team, said Ramona head coach Tyson Knierim. The scoring for each individual match is based on many different maneuvers with different scoring for each one. For example, 2 points are awarded if a wrestler takes his opponent to the mat, 2 or 3 points are awarded for exposing a back to the mat, depending how many seconds the wrestler can hold his opponent in that position. Two points are awarded for reversing the position on the mat — if the wrestler, for example, goes from bottom to top. One point would be awarded for escaping from the bottom back to a neutral position. There are several other penalty points that could be awarded in a match as well. Ramona got off to a quick start against San Marcos Dec. 6, scoring wins in the first four matches. The first match was the 106 weight class where senior Spencer Wituschik had an easy time pinning his opponent in the first period. Ramona increased point total in the 113 match as Savannah Kiddoo was un-opposed.

Ramona's Brandon Setterberg scores a major decision against Jackson Palmer from San Marcos. Dawson Castro (195) was pinned making the score 25-39 with two matches to go, San Marcos had clinched the victory. Jacob McElwee (220) lost a tough decision to Jesus Hernandez, 6-3. The final heavyweight match saw Travis Johnson overcome a bloody nose and three stops for him to receive first aid to pin Enrique
Galicia to make the final score 43-31. “San Marcos is a really tough team,” said Knierim. “They have an established foundation over there. I am pleased with how we wrestled tonight. Our young guys (freshman and junior varsity) won six of the seven matches tonight.” The next home meet will be Jan. 12, with JV starting at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7.

Wearing his Bulldog wrestling sweatshirt, Jeffery Ramsthaler stands on podium after placing third in his weight class in the Jimmy Hamada Memorial Tournament.
Ramona wrestlers take 15th at Jimmy Hamada Memorial Tournament BY DAN BROWN Ramona placed 15th among the estimated 50 teams competing in the Jimmy Hamada Memorial tournament hosted by La Costa Canyon High School Friday and Saturday. Many top ranked teams from California, Nevada and Colorado participated in the competitive tournament. Ramona’s Nathan Kiddo, wrestling at 113 pounds, won the tournament beating a wrestler who is ranked third in the state at 106 pounds and wrestled up in the 113 class. Kiddoo was named the Lightweight MVP of the tournament. Kiddoo also faced a wrestler from Mission Hills in the semifinals who had recently transferred from Oklahoma where he had won the state championship last year.
Kiddoo’s physical style of wrestling on his feet as well as his ability to scramble were key to his success over the weekend. Jeffery Ramsthaler competed in the 126-pound weight class and took third. His only loss in the tournament was to Mt. Carmel’s Kenji Beato, who like Ramsthaler is a returning state qualifier from last year. Ramsthaler showed a lot of dominance this weekend. Outside of the match he lost by decision 8-2, he won his five other matches by fall. “I was really happy with the way the boys were wrestling” said their coach, Tyson Knierim. “As a team our technique is improving. We had a lot of wrestlers lose one or two rounds before placing.” Ramona’s next meet is at San Pasqual on Jan. 5.

Law firm awards $5,000 for Eco-Leaders’ program Ramona High School teacher Gloria Quinn joined Ramona Unified trustees and administrators at a luncheon honoring her and the district for the Eco-Leaders Save the World program she and her functional skills students started and manage. In addition to earning a Golden Bell award for the district, Quinn’s program received a check for $5,000 from the public education law firms of Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost LLP during California School Boards Association’s Golden Bell luncheon Dec. 3 in the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco. The student-centered food recovery program demonstrates an effective partnership among San Diego County, the school district and the community, stated information presented at the luncheon. The program has been recognized as a model in California and the United States for implementing the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s hierarchy of food recovery encompassing source reduction, feeding people, feeding animals and on-site composting. As of the end of September, the Eco-Leaders program at Ramona High School diverted 28,000 pounds of food from the landfill, with 4,896 pounds source (waste) reduced, 6,200 pounds donated, 5,323 pounds fed to animals in the school’s agriculture program, and at least 7,510 pounds composted in the Earth Tub at Ramona High School. Eight Ramona Unified schools with a combined enrollment of 5,535 students participate in the program.

Ramona Unified School District Superintendent Anne Staffieri, Ed.D., left, and Ramona High School teacher Gloria Quinn, holding the Golden Bell award, accept an oversized check for $5,000 from representatives of the public education law firm of Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost LLP during the California School Boards Association conference in San Francisco. The Earth Tub composter at the high school handles about 50 pounds of diverted food from the eight schools per day, and Quinn’s students run the day-to-day operations. They use the finished compost in the student garden, which San Diego County designated an official culinary garden. Ramona High received national recognition last month for participating in the EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge. It was the only school and one of only 13 organizations and businesses nationwide to be recognized.

David Michael Honadle
August 31, 1999 - November 30, 2016 RAmoNA — David michael Honadle, age 17, of Ramona, CA, passed away with peace in his heart on Wednesday, November 30, 2016. David was born on August 31, 1999, to his parents, David J. and Christina E. (Adams) Honadle. David was a junior at mountain Valley Academy in Ramona. He also attended Palomar College taking woodworking classes. He led the school drama crew and cherished his time with his “drama” family. David loved to fish with his dad anywhere there was water. He was fascinated with how things worked and he could fix anything. His infectious smile brightened every
room. When he got his drivers permit he was adamant about being a donor. After David passed, he was honored with a medal for being a hero and saving a number of lives in his selfless act of donating his organs and tissue to those in need. Some would
say he was “the whole package”. He was a kind, respectful, caring, person that would help anyone in need. He was a friend to all. David was nominated by his classmates for being the person you would most like to be stranded on a deserted island with. County Players (northcountyplayers.org) brings its newest show, "It's a Wonderful Christmas Carol," to the Women's Club of Escondido theater through Dec. 18. The club will be transformed into the idyllic post-World War II town of Bedford Falls, made famous by the Frank Capra Christmas classic film, "It's a Wonderful Life," starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a long-suffering America businessman struggling against powerful forces with a little bit of heavenly help from his guardian angel, Clarence. North County Players' previous holiday offering, "Mr. Scrooge & Mr. Dickens" has played to full houses and thousands of attendees throughout Southern California for nearly the past decade. "It's a Wonderful Christmas Carol" is a faithful adaptation of the 1945 movie with twists and surprises straight from the mind of Charles Dickens, the author of what is likely another beloved holiday tale, "A Christmas Carol." The show features period costumes and sets, caroling, dancers,1940s Big Band holiday tunes, along with powerful music, sound, and visual effects.
The venue features comfortable seating, wrapping nearly three-quarters of the way around the stage, giving every audience member excellent viewability. Enjoy a wide variety of delicious before-the-show and intermission goodies at reasonable prices. Thirsty? Sip a glass of wine or a refreshing beer while you enjoy the show in addition to sodas, coffee and tea. Parking is easy and ample. One hundred percent of each ticket price will be donated to North County nonprofits, primarily to Women's Club family-oriented charities. In the show's final few minutes, the show will welcome audience members right up on stage to be impromptu citizens of Bedford Falls. As an added treat, they'll also be videoing those last couple of minutes and making the recordings available free to anyone who wants them, just by clicking on a YouTube link. The Women's Club of Escondido is on the corner of Mission and Rose, just behind the House of Prayer church. Tickets are $12 general and $9 for children, seniors and military in advance and at the door. For more, see NorthCountyPlayers.org.

Tell me a story
‘Rogue One’ opens Friday
E
arly in October 2007, Mike Miller resigned from the RB Sunrise Rotary Club. President of RB Financial, Miller said he was “tired of being nickel and dimed” with fines for his birthday, wedding anniversary, etc. Club members wished him well and assumed he’d never attend another meeting. Two weeks later the Witch Creek fire swept through town. Mike and Teresa Miller escaped from their burning house with 10 minutes notice. Word went around the Rotary club like — well, like wildfire. And the following Saturday 40 Rotarians and spouses appeared at the Miller property to search for any surviving valuables. Lunchtime brought one of our members carrying a dozen pizzas, salad and sodas. Mike watched in amazement as a table and checkered tablecloth were set before him. “Why are you all here?” he asked. “You were in trouble, Mike. We came because you were in trouble,” was the answer. “But — I resigned from this organization two weeks ago,” he protested. The response: “Yeah, we didn’t accept your resignation.” Not another word was said on the subject and we spent several more hours helping before going on our way. Nobody was terribly surprised when Mike returned to Rotary’s 7 a.m. meeting the
following Tuesday. Crying, he announced “You will NEVER get rid of me; I’m in this organization for life.” I recount this story whenever someone asks me what Rotary’s about. It explains our philosophy of “Service Above Self” far better than discussing the 1.25 million members in 34,000 clubs throughout 200 countries. Consider this whenever you’re explaining your own organization. Remember that anyone can quote facts and figures about real estate, but only you can tell the tearjerker about the couple you helped move cross-country to be with their only grandchild. Stories about larger goals and customer successes you aided are an important differentiator in today’s business world. They show your depth, character and humanity. Such an approach multiplies reasons for someone to buy from you. You’re obviously not just about trying to make that extra dollar. As we careen into a new year and a new reality, remember how much competition you’ve got for every customer. Now, more than ever, it’s critical to develop strategies for connecting with your clientele. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Look for ideas on helping yourself by helping others at www.askmrmarketing.com.

Four Ramonans sing in RB Chorale
Tommy Dutcher of Ramona receives the 2016 Auto Club Dragway Driver of the Year award, right, and the 2016 Pacific National Open Series Auto Club Dragway Pro Champion award at a banquet held recently in Fontana.
Dutcher wins big in NHRA Tommy Dutcher, a 2011 Ramona High School graduate and competitor in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing, was honored with two prestigious awards at a banquet at the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana on Dec. 3. Dutcher received the 2016 Auto Club Dragway Driver of the Year and the 2016 Pacific National Open Series Auto Club Dragway Pro Champion. The Ramona resident is also the 2016 Pro
Track Champion at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana where a 10-race series is held from April through September. In June he won the West Coast Classic Super Pro class drag race in Fontana for the second consecutive year, receiving over $10,000 in cash and prizes. Dutcher, son of Don and Cathy Dutcher, races a 1993 Ford Mustang with a 503 cubic inch motor. The car can cover a quarter mile in 9.3 seconds at 140 mph.
The RB Chorale’s popular holiday concert is returning with three shows in Poway this weekend. Four Ramonans sing in the chorale: Joan Renaud, Anita Starr, Dottie Cronin and Gina Levinson. The 42nd annual production, dubbed “Sing Noel and More,” can be seen at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16 and 17, plus 1 p.m. Sunday. Founder and director Pat Bean said tickets for all three performances are still available, but predicted the Sunday tickets will be gone quickly since in recent years that has typically sold out. The 120 singers, dancers and musicians will fill the Poway Center for the Performing Arts stage at 14598 Espola Road. Because the group of singers
is known for doing a lot of Broadway numbers, Bean said they are going to conclude Act I with “A Musical!” from “Something Rotten!” “It explains Pat Bean what a musical is all about,” she said, adding Paul Finley and Dixon Lianderal will lead the group in this number. “There are dancers in it. It’s going to be hilarious. The audience is going to love it as we go into intermission.” As in years past, the majority of songs will be representative of the upcoming holidays, with Christmas and Hanukkah
tunes among selections. They will range in style, and some will be from Christmas movies, she said. Per tradition, there will also be a patriotic number to honor veterans in the audience. This year it will be “God Bless the USA.” The audience will be invited to join the group in singing the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah,” and Santa Claus will make an appearance to distribute goodies to children, Bean said. Tickets are $32 for preferred seating; $22 for general admission; $20 for seniors (55 and older), students (ages 13 to 18) and active duty military; and $7 for children (ages 1-12). Purchase from any RB Chorale member or at rbchorale.org or 858-485-7664.

PET OF THE WEEK
SASSI, an 11-year-old Domestic
Longhair mix, is looking for a loving new family to call her own. She was brought into our care by her previous owners through no fault of her own, and really misses having a cozy, calm home. Her caregivers were immediately impressed by her affectionate and friendly demeanor - she really craves attention from her humans and loves to be pet. Her previous owner stated that she was great around children and other cats, and may even do well with a dog if they don’t pay her much attention. She would be a fabulous addition to a loving family! Sassi is available for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus, 3450 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido. To learn more about making her part of your family, please call 760-888-2275

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: DEBRA NEWHARD aka DEBRA JANE NEWHARD, DEBRA J. NEWHARD CASE NUMBER: 37-2016-00042896 PR PW CTL To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of DEBRA NEWHARD aka DEBRA JANE NEWHARD, DEBRA J. NEWHARD. A Petition for Probate has been filed by RANDY NEWHARD in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego. The petition for Probate requests that RANDY NEWHARD be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: 01/26/2017 Time: 1:30 p.m. Dept.: PC-2. Room: Address of court: 1409 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: Stephanie S. Entries are being accepted in the 2017 Toast of the Coast competition. of wine competitions is the ability for wineries to actually sell product that will be poured during the wine festival,” noted Director Rich Cook. “The Toast of the Coast Wine Festival will be held Saturday, June 10, during the Fair and attracts more than 1,200 wine enthusiasts.” This year, in partnership with Albertsons|Vons,
participating brands carried in Southern California will be featured in-store, creating excellent exposure opportunities to the region’s wine consumer. Combined with the marketing exposure of The Toast of the Coast Wine Festival, this is the single best competition for wineries trying to increase sales in the San Diego County market. Wineries can register at thetoastofthecoast.com and receive the “early bird” price of $55 per entry from now until Jan. 6, 2017, after which entry fees will increase to $80 each. Deadline to enter is Jan. 27. Wines will be evaluated by an expert panel of judges featuring wine writers, buyers and sommeliers. The San Diego County Fair, presented by Albertsons|Vons, is the largest fair in California with attendance of more than 1.6 million. Last year, more than 70 top wines were poured at the one-day ticketed tasting event during the 26-day run of the Fair.
