A group of legislators have authored a bill to repeal California’s rural fire fee. The introduction of the bill, AB 1506, on Jan. 12 followed California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s approval of the annual fire prevention fee. It was the third time the fee went before the board since it was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in July 2011. Local lawmakers are pushing for the repeal. Among co-authors of AB 1506 are District 77 Assemblyman Brian Jones and District 36 Sen. Joel Anderson, who both represent Ramona and have voiced their opposition to the fee. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries, whose 66th District includes Julian, and As-
Views differ on plans for Grasslands trails By KAREN BRAINARD San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation’s proposal for new trails and infrastructure in the Ramona Grasslands has created controversy between those who believe the county-owned land should be available for public use and those
who are concerned for the golden eagles that live there. The public comment period for the draft mitigated negative declaration (MND) and initial study of the proposal ended on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The project proposes 8.6 miles of non-motorized, multi-use trails, including 6.5 miles of existing trails
and ranch roads, and 2.1 miles of new trails within the 3,490-acre Ramona Grasslands Preserve. In addition, 2 miles of pathways are proposed along Highland Valley and Rangeland Roads. New infrastructure proposed for See GRASSLANDS TRAILS on page 20
semblyman Paul Cook of the 65th District. The law affects property owners living in state responsibility areas (SRAs) protected by Cal Fire, which include areas around Ramona and the 125 square miles of the Intermountain Fire Department. Property owners will be charged $150 per habitable structure. A $35 credit will be applied if the property owner already pays into a local fire protection district, such as the Ramona Municipal Water District. The fee is estimated to affect 73,000 homes in San Diego County. After the forestry board’s recent action, District 2 County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who represents Ramona and has opposed the fee from the beginning, said in a prepared statement: “I question the motives of the fire board and the governor for trying to triple tax rural property owners who already pay for fire protection with property taxes and special assessments. “There are fewer rural residents than urban residents so this is a politically convenient way for the state to try to pawn off its budget mess on people in rural areas,” she continued. “The triple tax is unfair, legally questionable and does zip to address the state’s real problem: bureaucratic bloat.”

decades old. The 1926 “Anniversary and Development Edition” of the Ramona Sentinel has those very words atop a page of news about the town’s history. That was the year Don Owen moved to Ramona. Don kindly lent his copy of the 1926 newspaper, making it clear he’d be back to get it. Several days later Don was honored at the 2012 Chamber’s Choice Awards as Citizen of the Year — a long overdue honor. At age 91, Don has quietly volunteered and contributed to the community for decades. Everyone from schoolchildren to senior citizens have benefited from his efforts on behalf of Ramona.

CHAMBER MOVE?— On Tuesday, Ramona Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 directors held their retreat in Ramona Town Hall. The chamber board traditionally meets in January for a daylong retreat to plan the year’s direction and activities and to choose directors who will chair specific committees and events. This year they may have done more. Sharon Davis, Ramona’s honorary mayor and an outgoing chamber director, was busy last week hanging curtains in the East Wing of Town Hall. She wanted chamber directors to feel as comfortable as possible, and the curtains prevent the south sun from streaming in the large front windows. Who knows? The chamber may want to return its offices to Town Hall. That was the plan in 1986, when Ramona Town Hall had to close its doors to the
public in October 1986 to make the building fit for occupancy. The chamber’s office was in Town Hall then, as was Ramona Art Guild, the Town Hall Players, Ramona Council of the Arts Unlimited and even North County Health Services. Harvest fairs, health fairs, dance classes, art shows, silent movies and community theater were among the many activities occurring in the historic building — and the chamber had a Window on Main Street and a strong Old Town presence. Town Hall trustees planned to give chamber directors a tour of the 117-year-old building Tuesday and discuss additional renovation work planned. Having a steady rental income from the chamber certainly would help with Town Hall insurance and utility bills, giving the trustees and other Town Hall enthusiasts additional resources to com-

plete the renovation. If chamber directors decide to move into Ramona Town Hall, they’ll have more room than the chamber had in 1986. The entire East Wing is available —
and they would have large windows on Main Street. NOTHING NEW—Well, what do you know. The slogan “Ramona: The Heart of San Diego County” is

County considers solar project near old dump By KAREN BRAINARD County staff gave three presentations, all focusing on either land use or density, at the Ramona Community Planning Group’s meeting this month. Presentations targeted a new voluntary program to promote the long-term preservation of agriculture in the county, an initiative to restrict development within forest conservation lands, and a proposal for a solar photovoltaic project adjacent to the nowclosed Ramona landfill. Proposed solar project Donna Turbyfill, deputy director of the Department of Public Works, presented a proposal to lease 33.06 acres of Ramona landfill buffer property off Pamo Road to a solar company to generate power. The buffer property is owned by the county and must be maintained in perpetuity, said Turbyfill. Turbyfill referred to planners’ concerns about the aesthetics and other issues with solar projects, and
said, “We do definitely want to make sure you’re happy with what we’re going to do.” Turbyfill said she would send letters to homeowners in the vicinity of the landfill and will return to the RCPG with more information. The majority of planners supported the proposal. Purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easement (PACE) Matt Schneider from the Department of Planning and Land Use (DPLU) said letters were mailed to property owners across the county who might be interested in and could qualify for the county’s new Purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easement program. Under the PACE program, willing agricultural property owners are compensated for placing a perpetual easement on their agricultural land that limits future uses and extinguishes future development potential. The program is voluntary and those in the program
retain ownership of their property, said Schneider. “The PACE program is fairly prevalent throughout the country,” he said. The county began accepting applications to the PACE program on Jan. 16 and will continue to do so until March 1. Applications will be evaluated by criteria such as development pressure on the property, density reduction realized through the general plan adoption, agricultural potential and cost of the easement relative to the program’s available funds. Properties selected for acquisition will be appraised at fair market value. Schneider said typical easement values range from $4,000 to $6,000 per acre. Currently the county has $2 million to fund the program, said Schneider. “We anticipate we’ll have more applicants than funding available,” he said. Farmers usually re-invest the money for farming, he said. Overall, planners were
receptive to the program. More information and applications are available online at www.sdcounty. c a . g o v / d p l u / a dva n c e / PACE.html, or by calling an information hotline: 858-694-2033. Forest Conservation Initiative Bob Citrano from DPLU said the Forest Conservation Initiative (FCI), enacted in 1993, expired in 2010 and was not included in the county’s general plan update. The initiative affected approximately 91,000 acres of privately owned land within the
Cleveland National Forest by establishing a minimum 40-acre parcel size per dwelling unit. This limits owners from subdividing their property, Citrano explained. Plans are underway to apply the FCI land use designation in a general plan amendment, and notices were sent to all owners of FCI lands, said Citrano. He noted that the FCI lands in Ramona are mainly on the north edge near San Pasqual Valley and south of San Diego Country Estates. Guiding prin-
cipals for the FCI include promoting environmental stewardship, preserving agriculture, minimizing public costs of infrastructure and services, and supporting a reasonable share of population growth. The planning group voted to support the draft land use map of FCI lands and to request the county re-notice affected property owners due to an error in the original letter and offer the same appeal consideration that property owners have had in the general plan update process.

Operation Cyberwild raises questions, concerns For a guest commentary on this subject, see page 8 By NEAL PUTNAM The mother of a Ramona man charged with offering to sell three stuffed birds on the Internet said she doesn’t think federal authorities did their research correctly before her son was charged.
Two federal class B misdemeanor charges were brought against Tyler Homesley, 24, and 12 others as a result of a sting operation called Operation Cyberwild by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the California Fish & Game. A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Los Angeles said Homesley offered to sell three birds, but it didn’t say the birds were stuffed. The release included a photo of one bird, and
it implied Homesley was trying to sell live endangered birds. “I assumed they were legal because they were sold on eBay,” said Dr. Susan Homesley, an optometrist, referring to how her son got the stuffed birds. She said federal officials posed as buyers and answered his ad on Craigslist in July 2011, and he drove to San Clemente to sell the stuffed birds. To his shock, they were federal authori-
ties who claimed he lacked a permit to sell a migratory bird species. Two birds were identified as a black shoulder kite and the third a Eurasian kestrel that were from China. Court records say Homesley needed a permit from the U.S. Department of the Interior or Commerce department to sell them. Tyler Homesley gave the three stuffed birds to officials, and his mother said they thought that was the
Judge recalls bench warrant for O’Neal By KELLY WHEELER A judge recalled a bench warrant today for Griffin O’Neal, the oldest son of actor Ryan O’Neal, when he came to court a day after failing to show up to be sentenced for driving on drugs and causing a head-on crash on state Route 78. O’Neal, 47, did not come to court last Thursday because he checked himself into a rehabilitation facility after bailing out of jail on a misdemeanor battery charge involving alleged domestic violence against his wife, according to defense attorney
Heather Boxeth. On Friday, Judge Eugenia Eyherabide reset O’Neal’s sentencing for Feb. 3. Boxeth said the defendant could remain in the rehab facility until then. She said O’Neal had been sober for five years before falling off the wagon and drinking on New Year’s Eve at his Ramona home. No one was injured in the Dec. 31 incident, according to his attorney, who said checking into a residential rehabilitation facility was “a responsible thing to do.” A readiness conference on that case was set for

Tuesday in El Cajon. Deputy District Attorney Vanessa DuVall said the defendant pushed his wife out of the way in an attempt to drink and drive on Dec. 31. O’Neal pleaded guilty in November to DUI causing injury and being a felon in possession of a gun. He faces a sentence between probation and four years in prison. O’Neal was on probation for a 2007 DUI conviction when the crash occurred on Aug. 2, 2011, about 1 p.m. near San Diego Safari Park. Both drivers were injured and O’Neal was arrested a month later.

Hundreds come to view raptors at HawkWatch 2012 By KAREN BRAINARD “Look how magnificent that bird is,” a spectator at HawkWatch 2012 said when seeing a ferruginous hawk up close. She was one of approximately 360 spectators viewing and learning about the variety of raptors that live or winter in the Ramona Grasslands on a recent Saturday morning. Wildlife Research Institute Inc. (WRI) is conducting HawkWatch each Saturday in January from 9 a.m. to noon at its headquarters, 18030 Highland Valley Road. The event is free for all ages and open to the public. Dave Bittner, executive director of WRI, runs the show with assistance from volunteers with other wildlife organizations. As Bittner talked, the volunteers walked around so visitors could have close-up views of the birds. Nineteen species of raptors have been recorded in the area, including golden and bald eagles. “There’s an adult red-
tail (hawk) flying across,” Bittner pointed up while he was telling visitors about the red-shouldered hawk that a volunteer was holding. At another time during his talk Bittner pointed out a Cooper’s hawk that was flying and said it probably came from somewhere up north. “In this time of year we have all our residents still here and then we have our migrants,” Bittner said. The wintering birds come to the Ramona Grasslands because of the food supply, Bittner said, adding that there are lots of animals to feed on in the grasslands. One spectator asked how hawks can spot their prey so far away. “Their vision is about eight times better than ours,” replied Bittner. Where a human will see a patch of grass, the hawk will see the individual blades, he noted When a volunteer brought out a peregrine falcon, Bittner told how peregrines can fly as fast as 200 mph when diving for prey. Spectators also saw an
American kestrel and a barn owl. “This barn owl is one of the best gopher catchers around,” Bittner told the group as the white-face owl serenely sat on volunteer Lara Webster’s gloved hand. The large crowd learned that the ferruginous hawk is the biggest hawk and can live to be 30 or 40 years old. Bittner regaled the crowd with many other facts about the raptors and took questions from his audience. HawkWatch draws people from all over the country and even Canada. When Bittner asked the crowd to call out where they were from, responses included Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio, Wisconsin and Chicago. Those living farthest away were presented with a HawkWatch cap. Sighting scopes are set around the WRI property for visitors to get close-up views of the raptors in the wild. Visitors are encouraged to arrive to HawkWatch by 8:30 a.m. and can bring binoculars and chairs. Stur-

dy shoes and layered clothing are recommended. The WRI visitor’s center sells sighting scopes and binoculars, as well as vests, T-shirts, and caps. In past years HawkWatch has also been held in February. This year it is only scheduled for January but
Bittner said WRI has a number of other events and programs planned, including a lecture series presented by WRI biologists. To get to HawkWatch take state Route 67 to Highland Valley Road. Turn north on Highland Valley Road and travel for two miles. Look
for the Wildlife Research Institute Inc. sign on the right. Parking is along the road. For more information about WRI events or HawkWatch, go to www.wildliferesearch.org or call 760789-3992. More photos at www. ramonasentinel.com.

Making the DREAM Work!
By JIM TUNNEY, Ed.D.
A
fter Further Review…As the nation celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this past Monday, I vividly recall his “I have a dream” speech in August 1963. Dr. King was only 34 at the time. During that month/ year I was officiating in the NFL and remember the tensions on the field between black and white players. Colorblindness hadn’t progressed much in the early ‘60s. Some progress has been made 48 years later. Dr. King’s speech was about “acceptance” of others — meaning all people. The sports world has made a good deal of progress in this area. A black offensive guard working alongside a white offensive tackle must NEVER consider the color of his teammate to create a successful outcome. First, for a T*E*A*M to create a winning climate, it must have HARMONY. Coaches call it chemistry, which promotes the idea that the team comes first and “I” am only a part of it. Tebow (Denver Broncos QB) comes to mind — should we replace harmony with Tebowing? Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints QB), recently setting a single season passing record of 5,084 yards, said it loud and clear: “This is not about one guy, this is about all of us working together.” Second, each player must believe in his abilities as well as that of his teammates – call it OPTIMISM. Fans’ signs saying “We Believe” appeared many times in support of their teams. While it may be trite (trite because it is true), failure is not getting knocked down; failure is not getting back up after being knocked down. Ya gotta believe! Third, regarding setting goals, there must be a PATHWAY. The lack of a pathway, ie., goals, is like a ship without a rudder; there is difficulty staying on course. Write down what you want to accomplish, then follow that path. And finally, you can’t do it alone — EVERYONE is important to a team’s success. Response to ‘endangered birds’ report By TYLER HOMESLEY
I
n response to the article titled “Ramona man charged in L.A. while trying to sell endangered birds:” I am prefacing my response with the details that were left out of what actually happened, as well as the fact that I had no more prior knowledge than the next person that selling taxidermies can be illegal. Taxidermies are DEAD animals that are stuffed in order to preserve their natural beauty after death. I bought them in the same state that they were going to be sold in, so I neither killed them nor stuffed them myself. There were only three total taxider-
Guest Commentary mies that I attempted to sell, so this was no large sum of animals. I initially purchased these birds to set up a display in my room that would commemorate the common interest that my father and I had in birds of prey, seeing as he had passed away in July 2010 right before purchase. Almost a year later, I lost interest in the display and sold the display case after selling the birds. I thought this would only be another sale of merchandise on Craigslist, since I bought them trouble-free on eBay from
Hong Kong. With that said, these birds are not native to the United States in their living form (a black-shouldered kite and a Eurasian kestrel). As it turned out, this was part of Operation CyberWild, which was a three-week environmental sting aimed at catching people selling illegal animals and animal parts on the internet. On the day I headed up to San Juan Capistrano to try to sell these taxidermies, I brought along my friend Sarah as a companion for the trip up there (she is not facing any charges since she

had no involvement). After the supposed transaction, I was ambushed in the parking lot by a pickup and a sport utility vehicle, each containing special agents. The special agents present at the time, around six of them, were all males. At first, they pulled their guns out on Sarah and I (remember, this is all because of three stuffed birds), but every gun I saw was aimed at Sarah and not me, which is ludicrous. After that, we were both detained about 20 feet apart (we were not arrested and we did not go to jail), and this is where it gets worse. They performed the routine pat-down on both of us, and there was no female special agent to perform it on Sarah. Sarah came home feeling uncomfortable because they patted her under her breasts and in the crotch area, which I witnessed. Neither of us had the monetary supply to sue them See COMMENTARY on page 9

Sentinel Reader Opinion Reopen Orosco shooting, Cedar falls to public
Open Letter to the U.S. Forest Service: It’s been over five years since I have been denied the right to visit Orosco Shooting Area to target shoot with my grandkids due to it being closed for one lame reason after another by some forestry bureaucrats with an apparent Hitler mentality. The closeness of the so-called “public land” is one of the main reasons we bought property, built a home and moved to Ramona. I am an American. I served two years honorably, drafted into the Korean War 1951053, been shot at, but they missed. Our U.S. Constitution and the passport you now demand to visit public land give me the right to target shoot at Orosco Shooting Area. (This applies as well
to hiking to Cedar Creek Falls.) If you feel you have the authority to merely close these recreational areas to American citizens as a solution to something you perceive as dangerous, then have the honesty to go public in this newspaper to state what right you have to close public land to recreation by American citizens. Otherwise, open Orosco Shooting Area and Cedar Creek Falls immediately and keep them open to let us enjoy our birthright as American citizens. Ray A. Hollings Ramona

for sexual harassment, so they got away with it. They asked to search my vehicle, and I voluntarily gave up my right to privacy by letting them search my truck. It had no weapons or any other illegal goods inside, so none of my personal belongings were confiscated. I was told by the special agent acting as the buyer that there might be repercussions from the attempted sale, which I acknowledged. Before departing from the parking lot, I signed the mandatory forms and voluntarily forfeited the birds (I could have kept them if I wanted to). I did not expect a court summons to come back six months after the fact charging me with a federal case. There are three assumptions that need to be clarified from this article. The first misconception is that I may face a year in prison. I was charged with a Class B Misdemeanor, not a felony, which in short is a mid- to low-level charge.

The possible outcomes in the sentencing are a fine, community service, probation, jail, or prison at the worst. This was a nonviolent, non-repeat, victimless offense. The second misconception is that I am being charged for selling endangered birds. In truth, my charge actually reads that I “knowingly offered to sell two migratory birds… without a permit.” What stymies me is the wording, because dead birds cannot migrate. In doing research, I have not found a resource that says a permit is required to sell taxidermies. The word “endangered” was never used once anywhere, so this is an unfair bias. The final misconception is that I was trying to sell living birds in an exotic animal ring. I reiterate that these birds were stuffed taxidermies. Anyone who knows me already knows that I graduated from California Lutheran University on May 14, 2011, and
had been back at home for around a month or so when this sting took place. The time slot is too narrow to organize something as elaborate as an animal ring. If anyone reading this has been to my house, the absence of a bird aviary will show that I do not deal with living birds, which further proves my point. For selling three taxidermies at a combined price of $150 on Craigslist, and having a federal case result from it, this is arguably one of the worst accidental sales a person can make. What I learned from this whole ordeal is to always research any merchandise you buy and sell, since it can be illegal and can happen to anyone. It is not the duty of the seller to precaution the buyer that their items may be deemed illegal; they just want your money. Please do not repeat this same mistake. Tyler Homesley is a Ramona resident.
Enough is enough, school district
Shame on you, Ramona school board and administrators. I am writing this letter in response to your upcoming school board meeting to lay off 16 full-time positions, five of which are night custodians. How can you keep messing with the education, health and welfare of our children? Enough is enough. The district office is tipping over with upper management, assistants and assistants to assistants. Are you going to clean your offices and restrooms? Why don’t you try to manage your job without any help. Try looking at where we can save money without losing jobs. Sell or auction off property, shut off 1/2 lighting after campuses are closed, take away company vehicles, gas cards, etc. Have you tried talking to the actual departments that are doing these jobs for suggestions on how to save? Not management. They are not the performers. I used to work for the district and have seen the waste that goes through the Ramona school district. I feel so blessed that my sons are not attending our schools any longer. The sad thing is one day my grandchildren probably will. You people who make six figures have given up what? Make cuts in your department. Two of your jobs would equal the $250,000 you say you could save for this year. Why did we need another HR director, assistant superintendent and vice principal? Delegate the work like the rest of the classified have to do. Watch out, teachers. You are next. Parents, get involved. Our children are our future. Come to the school board meeting this Thursday, Jan. 19, to sign in before 7 p.m. and speak up. It is now or never. Cindy Dennis Ramona

Museum showcases antique bottles in new exhibit Art Guild sponsors workThe late John English had a passion for antique bottles, and his collection has been donated in his memory to the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society and the Guy B. Woodward Museum. A total of 120 bottles are on display for viewing by the public in the Verlaque House basement on the museum grounds. “John located a trash pit behind the Verlaque Store,
circa 1884, now Catt Farm Supply. He began digging and unearthed a veritable treasure trove of Ramona’s early history,” said Bert Byrne, publicity chairman for the Ramona historical sociaty. “Many unique bottles are featured, including Purex raised letter examples and many early medicine prescription containers.” The collection is the result of the generosity of John’s widow, Mary Lou English,
noted Byrne. Mary Lou’s mother, Judy Eaton, owned and operated the Branding Iron Western Apparel Store in the old Verlaque Store, and her father, Dale Eaton, helped get John started in the hobby of digging up old things, from arrowheads to bottles, leading to the Verlaque “find.” John died as a result of a tragic accident while searching for treasures to add to his collection, but
his accomplishments will live on in the museum display,” said Byrne. Museum Director Ken Woodward and member George Smith recently completed setting up the bottles in two display cases. The museum, 645 Main Street, is open for tours Thursday and Friday from 1-3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Special tours may be arranged by calling 760-789-7644.

Paralyzed victim of drunk driving accident to share story on Jan. 25 Mark Manion tell his heartgripping story of being paralyzed by a drunk driver in a presentation at First Congregational Church on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. Manion and his cousin, Mike, both teens at the time, were enjoying a cross-country bicycle trip from San Diego to Ely, Minn., when four
young men were out enjoying a drive in their car. Those men combined drinking and driving and now Mike is dead and Manion is paralyzed. The driver went to prison and the passengers live in the “prison of their minds,” Manion said. Manion has been a guest speaker at schools, military
bases, drug and alcohol recovery centers, and churches for approximately 15 years. He was San Diego County Victim Advocate of the Year in 2006 and Volunteer of the Year in 2002 for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). He is also the author of “Unfinished Miles, One
Man’s Unthinkable Journey,” and he has produced a 20-minute video of his story. He has appeared on radio and television and was recently on the cover and wrote the feature article for the Navy and Marine’s Ashore magazine. Manion captivates audiences with his humor and down-
to-earth, positive approach to life. His wheelchair makes a strong visual statement and his story gets people thinking about the choices they make and the consequences of those choices, especially in regards to drinking, driving and drugs. “I think it would be great for families to bring their teenage
kids,” said April Powell, with the office staff of In His Steps, a Christian recovery home in Ramona. “He’s unbelievable,” Powell said of Manion. “He’s quite a motivator.” Manion’s 30- to 45-minute inspirational talk will be held during In His Steps’ Wednesday night program at First Congregational Church.

Ramona Back Country Quilters, from left at front table, Jana Seegrist, Susan Porter, Sherry McClendon and Diane McKee participate in a “cut-in” Tuesday morning to prepare kits for quilts for children of active service men and women.
Quilters hold ‘cut-in’ for comfort quilts to go to military children Members of Ramona Back Country Quilters filled their meeting room in Ramona Community Center on Tuesday for a “cut-in” to prepare kits of cut fabrics for other sewers to assemble into small children’s quilts, called “Comfort Quilts.” The finished quilts will go to children of deployed military people. “Family pictures are printed on some of the fabric, so that a child has their own parent’s picture, and pictures of themselves with that parent to cuddle up with,” said Dot Koerner of the backcountry quilting group. This is a project of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, and finishing the quilts is a project of the American Sewing Guild, which some of the Ramona Back Country Quilters belong to, explained Koerner. “Some Ramona quilters have helped with these in the past,” said Koerner. “Just last week Channel 9 News did a feature as the American Sewing Guild presented the 4000th Comfort Quilt to a San Diego service family.” On Tuesday, the backcountry quilters brought their fabric cutting supplies and worked together to get kits ready for sewing and quilting. They started at 9 a.m., took a break for lunch at Ramona Senior
Center, and continued in the afternoon until they ran out of fabric. Also attending the “cutin” event were Pat Burns, president of the American
Sewing Guild, as well as Carol Filbeck, coordinator for the quilt project, and Rhoda Keegan, a guild member and coordinator for putting kits together.

Unexpected visitors surprise Boys & Girls Club members Exotic animals out for a stroll become instant education tool Members of the Ramona Branch of the Boys & Girls Club had an unexpected opportunity to learn about zebras and camels on Jan. 11, when the Hearts and Hands Animal Rescue showed up at Collier Park. The animals were out for a walk with their trainers to help them become acclimated to different surroundings and people. Club members were quite surprised and amazed to see a zebra outside the window of the clubhouse art room. Their excitement prompted staff member Kathe Rothe to talk with the trainers and receive permission to bring the club members out for an educational lesson with Nancy Nunke, Ramona resident and director of Hearts and Hands Animal Rescue. The young zebra named Zavannah, was just as excit-

Why Your Workout Sucks OK. OK. Maybe your workout doesn’t suck completely or maybe you have yet to make the life changing decision to start on your path of fitness, but the traditional workout routine does not work for the majority of people. This is especially true of the 70 percent or so portion of the population that comes in to to see me for weight loss. What is the traditional workout routine, you may ask? Let me give you a quick history of the fitness business and this will unfold the reason most people think this “traditional” workout is for them. It was the groovy ‘70s and Arnold, with the help of Joe Wieder, made his way from Austria to dominate the bodybuilding world. In fact my first bodybuilding book was Arnold’s “Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding.” In this book you could learn all the isolation techniques a bodybuilder would need to hopefully build a physique like those in the magazines. This is where it all went wrong. In comes Nautilus and its line of “state of the art” chain and cam driven machines that locked your body in place and allowed you to further isolate and concentrate on the biceps, lower abs, inner thigh muscles and every other muscle on your body. Well this was fabulous if you were a bodybuilder and wanted to focus on building those calves that you weren’t genetically gifted with. Forty years later and you will see people at most gyms doing just this. In fact a member today told me she was doing lat pulldowns to get rid of back fat. Sorry, not going to happen by isolating and concentrating on individual muscles. To be totally honest, my club has these very
machines and I actually used two of them today, but this is not the best way to get in shape and burn adipose or body fat tissue off your rear end! Let’s imagine how our bodies were designed to be used. When in real life would you sit down on your bottom with your back against a back rest, while keeping your elbow locked into your side and try to lift 50 pounds up to your chest? NEVER! You would squat down, use your gluteals, lats, and pull that 50 pounds off the ground. Again, there is a place for isolation work, but not for 99 percent of the population. Check out this photo below. In the ‘20s we actually had it right. Squat down keeping the rear back, grab the weight, quickly explode up and clean the weight to your chest. Balance the weight at shoulder height, now push press the weight directly overhead. You used your full body to lift this and utilized the kinetic chain (skeletal, muscular and nervous systems) and burned a signifigant number of calories. The other picture, above, is me and my training staff doing some TRX training. This exercise is called an atomic pushup. Lower your chest down to the floor, contract the chest, shoulders and triceps, all the while tucking your knees to your chest working your abdominals, legs and back muscles. Now that is an efficient use of time and one heck of a calorie burn. The moral of the story this week is get the most out of your time and use the body as it was designed, to move as a whole. McWhorter’s 3rd Street Grill featured on Channel 8 By KAREN BRAINARD Ramona’s Jim McWhorter and his 3rd Street Grill were featured on Channel 8 news on Wednesday evening, Jan. 11. Channel 8’s Larry Himmel interviewed McWhorter for his “In Your Neighborhood” segment and had the Ramona chef cook some of his specialties. For those who missed the TV segment, it is on Channel 8’s website, www. cbs8.com. Click “special features” at the top and go to “In Your Neighborhood with Larry Himmel.” The segment is called “3rd Street Grill: Down-onthe-corner cuisine.” Himmel said it will remain in the archives for about two months. When doing a story in Santa Ysabel, Himmel said, he noticed 3rd Street Grill during his drive and thought the mobile kitchen was “very intriguing.” Himmel said he met McWhorter and thought he was a wonderful Ramona character. In the segment Him-
mel talked about how McWhorter has made the best of a bad situation and how the locals support him. “It’s such a great community,” he said of Ramona. McWhorter bought the property at Main and Third streets with plans to turn the old house at that site, which once held an Italian restaurant, into a full-service restaurant with outdoor dining. County regulations, a tanking economy and other factors stalled his plans, so to get the business going, McWhorter opened the mobile kitchen while continuing to renovate the house. The television feature reporter said he enjoys doing stories on the backcountry and on the “little guys.” McWhorter prepared for Himmel a Cali-Mex bean burger wrap, sweet potato fries with bleu cheese dip, and broccoli cheese soup. 3rd Street Grill offers a variety of hamburgers including the Baldwin Burger, named for Ramona High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Damon Baldwin. Back Country News SOHO Purchases Historic Santa Ysabel General Store Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) capped off an eventful 2011 with a major property acquisition that will allow the organization to broaden services and expand its regional outreach with the purchase of the 1884 Santa Ysabel General Store, one of San Diego backcountry’s most recognized historic landmarks. Vacant for the past few
years, the 1884 historic Santa Ysabel General Store will be restored and used as a Nature Interpretive Center, Mercantile and Visitor Center. “The Santa Ysabel store is one of the rarest of building types in all of San Diego,” said Bruce Coons, SOHO executive director. “As the only adobe false front store left in the county, it was a priority site for SOHO to acquire to
assure its protection and preservation.” The plan is for SOHO to operate the site with several land conservancy organizations. “This is an exciting opportunity to work with some of the most respected nature conservancy groups in the region — Volcan Mountain Foundation, San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, San Diego River Foundation and possibly others,” said Coons. Once the building is open, these organizations, using knowledgeable volunteer staff, would offer visitor information on surrounding public trails, recreation opportunities, and cultural heritage sites of the backcountry, noted Coons. Located at 30275 Highway 78, the store purchased for Photo courtesy of Coons Collection was $295,000. The iconic Santa Ysabel General Store, circa 1918.
building is the most important site left of what was the historic town site of Santa Ysabel. The town retains much of its 19th century feel as it is still mostly buffered by open space. One of the first orders of business is to restore the façade, replace windows and doors that have been removed or changed, and paint the building, which includes restoring its historic signage. Local support has been strong already, reported Coons, and congratulations have been coming in from all over the backcountry as this much beloved building with its prominent location had people worried about its future. SOHO purchased the store from the Tulloch family, a pioneer cattle ranching family who have for generations been caring for the land. They were eager to get the building into good hands and felt that SOHO, having demonstrated

through the years how they can care for historic properties so that everyone can enjoy them, was a good fit for the property. This marks the first time since 1969, when SOHO helped to purchase the Villa Montezuma in Sherman Heights, that SOHO has purchased a building. SOHO operates the county-owned Whaley House museum, the city-owned Adobe
Chapel and Marston House & Gardens, and the Vista Irrigation District-owned WarnerCarrillo Ranch House, Stage Station and Trading Post that is due to open in the spring. SOHO is seeking donations to help restore the building and replenish funds. For more information, Coons may be contacted at 619-297-9327 or sohosandiego@aol.com. SOHO’s website is Sohosandiego.org.

Wildlife Research Institute Executive Director Dave Bittner said he is not happy with the plans because of the proposed trails’ proximity to a foraging area for golden eagles northwest of the Ramona Airport and their nesting area on private land adjoining the preserve in Bandy Canyon. A proposed trail, he said, would be about
2,000 feet across a canyon from where the eagles nest. “They flee at that distance from people,” Bittner said. If the eagles leave, their eggs will be eaten by ravens, he added. Bittner said the county has already lost 56 percent of the golden eagle population. Letters in support of the trails, however, note that the land was purchased with public monies and should be open for people to responsibly enjoy nature. Services for Ellie Whitcomb will be Saturday Services for Ellie Whitcomb, who lost her battle with cancer on Jan. 9, will be held at Bonham Bros. and Stewart Mortuary at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21. She was 84. Known by her family and friends as “Ms. Ellie,” the long-time Ramona resident and founder of the People Helping People cancer support group was Ramona’s honorary mayor for two terms, from 199698 and 1998-2000. A woman known for her energetic, straightforward and caring manner, she is credited with getting the Ramona Post Office name and address put on the front of the building. She served as president of the Ramona Julian Healthcare Advisory Council for six years and is a former president of the Ramona Senior Center Board of Directors. Honored as the 1994 Ramona Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and as a Ramona Soroptimist Club Woman of Distinction in 1996, she is a former Ramona Town Hall trustee, a six-year chamber ambassador, Kiwanis Club of Ramona president from 2000-01 and Ramona Woman’s Club Board member for 2011-12. State of California Assemblywoman Charlene Zettel honored her as Legislature Woman of the Year 2000 “in recognition of outstanding service and
dedication to the people of the State of California.” Born Eleanor Mae St. Clair on Nov. 29, 1927, in Springfield, Mass., she moved to San Diego with her daughter Sharon in 1950. She met Gordon “Moose” Whitcomb in 1967 and they married the next year. Only in a family discussion several
years later did they realize that they had actually met many years prior when she worked as a waitress at a soda shop and Moose came there for milk shakes as it was just across the street from where he worked at a service station. Together they became active members of Ramona. She sang in the choir at

Grace Community Church, and she and Moose hosted numerous activities for the church’s seniors at their former home on Highland Valley Road. They were both very active as advisers to the Ramona Sheriff’s Explorer group. After being diagnosed with malignant melanoma and finding few resources in Ramona for people with cancer, she founded People Helping People to assist those battling the disease and served there as a volunteer for 22 years until she retired at age 80 in November of 2007. Her work helped scores of local residents, providing them a safe place to share their feelings with others facing the same challenges. She also became a major proponent of bringing health care facilities to Ramona. She beat melanoma and a severe case of colon cancer during her time with the group. She regained her strength and became a cancer ward volunteer at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido and Pomerado Hospital in Poway. Driving several times each week to Escondido and Poway, she logged hundreds of hours assisting with patient care. She also cared for Moose after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which would ultimately take him in early 2001. A member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church

The majority of her activities came to a halt in 2002 when she met her best friend and companion, 84year Ramona resident Don Owen. The couple spent countless hours together and enjoyed cruises from Mexico to Alaska. Her most current endeavors were with Serendipity Ranch and Granny’s Vineyard on her property on Black Canyon Road. The grapes grown in the vineyard were mainly for her granddaughter Jennifer J. Jenkin’s winery, Pamo Valley Vineyard. Jennifer or “JJ” as Ms. Ellie called her was her pride and joy. Ramona High Water Dawgs win league opener By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s girls water polo team won its Palomar League opener at home against Poway. The game with a 9-8 final score was tied six times before Paulina Bernd scored the winning goal with 1:50 left to play. “Close game,” said Coach Donnie Williams. “It went back and forth quite a lot.” The Bulldogs scored first before Poway evened the score during the Jan. 10 match. Ramona took a 3-1 lead, but the Titans scored the final two goals of the first quarter. Ramona led 5-3 during the second period, and a Poway goal created a 5-4 halftime score. The Titans tied the game in the third quarter and took a 6-5 lead, but Ramona scored the next
two goals to hold a 7-6 lead entering the fourth period. Poway scored the first two fourth-quarter goals to take the lead by an 8-7 margin, but the Bulldogs scored the tying goal with three minutes left before Bernd put the winning shot into the net. “We were able to hold them off,” Williams said. “It was a good first league win for us this year. Started everything off real well.” Cassie Bernas led the Bulldogs with four goals, Bernd placed three balls into the net, and Jocelyn Schwegler and Holly Smith each scored once. Bernd, Rachel Hogervorst, Bri Hogervorst and Smith each had two assists while Bernas contributed one assist. Bernas had three steals, Smith pulled off two steals, and Bri Hogervorst and goalie Tiffany Larson each

Wrestlers lose to Poway, earn second in regional tourney By BILL TAMBURRINO The Bulldog wrestling team had its busiest week of the season. The Dawgs entered the week undefeated in dual meets. They suffered their first loss of the season in the Palomar League opener to Poway. The Dawgs then bounced back in the Mater Dei Dual Meet Tournament before dropping the championship match to Olympian High School. Coach Steve Koch’s grapplers are now 7-2 overall and 0-1 in league matches. Ramona lost to Poway 80-0 in the Palomar League opener last Thursday. Poway is ranked number three in the state and is undefeated with a 9-0 dual meet record. “We battled but we don’t have the depth that they have,” said Koch. “They brought three full teams and had 30 wrestlers that they didn’t even weigh in make the trip just to cheer on their wrestlers. Our frosh did a very good
job. They won six bouts and wrestled well in several other bouts.” Koch said he is proud of the way the Bulldogs bounced back at Mater Dei tournament. “We won four dual matches and had three wrestlers win gold medals, three won silver medals, and two took home bronze medals as we took second place as a team,” he said. Kevin Conroy (132), Isaiah Ilich (138) and Devin
Rhodes (170) each went 5-0 at Mater Dei and took home gold medals as champions in their weight classes. Vince Adair (106), Noe Hernandez (182) and Jureall Simmons (280) recorded 4-1 records and won silver medals for their efforts. Brian Coane (152) and Jacob Grybow (160) took home third place medals for posting 3-2 records. As a team Ramona
opened with a 78-6 win over Lincoln Preparatory High School. They then beat Palo Verde 61-13, Calexico 54-21 and Eastlake High School 53-15 to advance to the championship match. The Dawgs dropped the championship match 42-33 to take second place in the tourney. Ramona will travel to Rancho Bernardo High School to take on the Broncos in a Palomar League
match Thursday at 7 p.m. Koch also praised his lower division wrestlers. Austin Koch (170) won the Mira Mesa Junior Varsity Tournament and took second place at the San Clemente Frosh/Soph tourney. Trae Rodriguez won a gold medal at Mira Mesa in the 220-pound class. Troy Jordan (135) won the Vista Frosh/Soph Tourney, and Blake Hakala (120) won a silver medal for his second-place finish.
Students beat staff in fundraising soccer match By JOE NAIMAN Ramona High School’s boys and girls soccer teams were the winners in their indoor game against Ramona High School staff members in the school’s gym last Monday. The varsity won the game by an 8-5 score, and the event raised approximately $300, which will be split between the boys and girls programs. “It went well,” said Michael Jordan, boys head coach. “It was a
good night.” A running clock was used for the four 15-minute quarters. The girls played the first and third quarters while the boys played the second and fourth quarters. Because Ramona’s soccer coaches, including assistant and lower-level coaches, played for the staff, the team captains coached the varsity. “A lot of people had a lot of fun,” Jordan said. The match utilized the 6-on-6 format of indoor soccer with five
field players and a goalkeeper on each side. “By the time the fourth quarter rolled around they still had varsity guys who hadn’t played yet,” Jordan said. That meant that the varsity players were fresh while the staff, who led by a 5-4 margin at the end of the third period, were starting to fatigue. “Most of us played considerable minutes,” Jordan said. had one steal. Larson made eight saves. “We were happy with that,” Williams said. What Williams was not happy with was the Bulldogs’ performance on extra-player opportunities when a penalty sent a player out of the pool for 20 seconds of play or until the other team scored. Ramona converted two of nine extra-player opportunities while the Titans scored on three of six such situations. “It’s not a good place to be as far as that,” said Williams. “You need to be more successful on both avenues.” That lack of success on both sides of extra-player situations led to Ramona’s 8-5 loss Jan. 12 at Rancho Bernardo. The Bulldogs failed to score on all six power play opportunities, although they converted a five-meter penalty shot, while the Broncos scored five goals on seven extraplayer situations. “I think we beat them in all other aspects of the game,” Williams said. “I thought we matched up well with them.” The Broncos scored the first quarter’s only goal and had a 2-0 lead before two Ramona goals in the second period tied the score. Two extra-player goals gave Rancho Bernardo a 4-2 halftime lead. Williams acknowledges that the girls also recognize that improvement needs to be made from the offensive figure of converting two of 15 extra-player situations during the week while allowing eight goals in 13 defensive situations. “They’ll continue to grow,” said Williams. “They’ll figure out what they need to do in those situations.” The split gave the Bulldogs a 7-4 overall season record along with their 1-1 Palomar League statistic. Ramona plays at Westview Thursday, Jan. 19, and will spend Friday and Saturday in the East County Invitational tournament.

I
have often stated that I would rather go to a high school or college athletic event than a professional event. However, I have to admit that the NFL does things correctly when it comes to the playoffs. They actually have criteria that must be met for its teams to get into the playoffs. The San Diego Section of the CIF and the Bowl selection committees could learn a lot from the NFL in this area. I spent most of the bowl season in the beautiful state of Hawaii on the islands of Maui and Kauai. I seldom saw an entire game and usually the highlights on ESPN were
more than enough. Several bowl games didn’t have any highlights and it is a good thing that they were televised or they would not have been seen at all. Several games were played to empty seats impersonating as spectators. Some producers tried to make sure that the cameras never took shots of the audience — or lack of an audience in most cases. Instead of watching on television what locals didn’t go to in person, I decided to participate in outdoor individual sports. I went snorkeling twice with two of my grandsons, Vinny and Nico. Some tourists thought that they were on a whale watch when I entered the water but, since whaling is not legal in our 50th state, I suffered no harpoon wounds. One smart aleck did yell “There she blows!” when I emptied my snorkel, but nobody panicked. I went on a real whale watching tour with my wife and two other Ramona residents, Joe and Lynne Bess. It is not legal to get closer than 100 yards to a humpback whale, but if the whale swims to you it is OK. Three whales decided to see if one of their own was on our boat and swam right under us. A lot of people on the catamaran

Youth Basketball League Standouts of the Week Hunter Pietila
Emily Sojourner
Hunter has scored 24 points so far this year and is in the top four of his division in points. Hunter is a fourth-grader and an excellent student at Ramona Community School. He also attends the after school program at the Boys and Girls Club. Besides his love for the game of basketball, he is an avid baseball player who is very skilled at the sport. Hunter also has a passion for soccer. “He loves playing all three sports, which makes life a little hectic at times but well worth it,” say his parents, Lisa and Walt.
Emily is leading her division with 47 points in four games. Coach John Elliott says, “Emily is our leader on the court. She is a very talented player, but also the consummate team player. She always looks to get her teammates involved in the game. She makes the girls around her better and it’s a pleasure to have her on our team.” Emily’s GPA is currently a 3.8 and she is in the National Junior Honor Society at school. She loves playing basketball at Olive Peirce Middle School and participating in cross country. If Emily isn’t playing basketball or running cross country, she’s hanging out with friends or camping with her family.
Adult swim program starts
A newly launched Heartland Swimming Association has started an adult swim program that meets at the pool at Ramona High School. Practices are at the pool at 1401 Hanson Lane from 5:15 to 6:45 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Heartland trains swimmers who range in ability from beginning competitive swimmer to national qualifiers. Interval work and endurance fitness development are offered on Monday and Friday, with individualized stroke coaching on Tuesday and Thursday. To register, see www.heartlandswim.org. were scared, but not me. I always put on life jackets and climb the mast, pray and scream to scare the others on the boat. Humpback whales often swim in threes. The baby or calf swims first. The mother of the newborn follows her offspring and teaches it the ropes. A male whale, not always the father but still interested in the mother, runs third. All three swam under our catamaran. After the boat docked and the crew talked me down from the mast, the captain said that he had never seen so many whales swim so close to his boat. We should feel lucky. I did, but for other reasons. While the Alabama/LSU game was being played, I was on a trip to the North shore of the Island of Kauai to view some big surf. I had traveled to the North shore of Maui the previous week to observe big surf. The Tide and Tigers both have some great athletes on scholarship, but I saw some great athletes paddling into some very big waves. They were not on scholarship, but they must have been on something to paddle into some of those giants. I resisted the urge to paddle out into those 20-foot-plus waves for the 65th straight year. I also shot a round of golf. Actually, it was a half a round, nine holes. However, my score was close to the scores of the pros who were playing in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions that was going on Maui. I try to get my money’s worth and get in as many swings as possible. I also went on daily walks on Maui. There was a county park right on the shore next to where I stayed and on my walks I often saw green turtles and some dolphins and several whales offshore about 400 yards and some on shore, too. I did get back in time to catch last week’s NFL playoff games. They were great but I would rather have been in Hawaii catching the highlights on ESPN. I again affirm that this column was not just an attempt to right off as tax deductions my trip to my favorite state. Aloha and Mahalo.

Final stretch of I-15 express lanes opens Officials predict lanes will shorten commutes San Diego Association of Governments, Caltrans and federal highway officials celebrated the completion of the last four miles of the Interstate 15 express lanes last Thursday, with the $1.3 billion, 20-mile stretch of expressway within the freeway opening to the public this week. “Our goal at SANDAG is to build similar lanes on the freeway system throughout the region, creating a network of express lanes within the already existing freeway corridors, thereby giving the traveling public additional
choices,” SANDAG Chair Jerome Stocks said. Built in the freeway median, the express lanes (two in each direction) extend from state Route 163 in San Diego to SR78 in Escondido, with transit stations and Park & Ride lots along the route. The lanes are free for carpools, vanpools, buses, permitted clear-air vehicles and motorcycles. They also are available for solo drivers who pay a toll via the FasTrak® electronic tolling system — with the funds going to support operations and pay for transit service in the corridor.
“Until recently, average traffic delays along the corridor added upwards of 45 minutes to commute times,” said Acting Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. SANDAG is offering special incentives to new FasTrak customers, carpools, vanpools and Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Premium Express Bus riders to encourage them to take advantage of the express lanes. The promotions begin Jan. 23 and are valid through March 11 or while quantities last. Details on each are as follows: • Solo drivers who open a FasTrak account will receive a $10 gift card spon-

sored by San Diego Gas & Electric. • Individuals who sign up with iCommuteSD. com and track their carpool trips will receive a $10 gift card sponsored by SDG&E. • Newly formed vanpools will receive $50 off the first month’s van lease. • Commuters who try the MTS Premium Express Bus will receive a complimentary round-trip offer. The I-15 express lanes feature a movable barrier that allows Caltrans to make up to three lanes available to drivers during rush-hour in the peak direction. They were built in three segments — from SR56 to Centre City Parkway opened in 2008, from SR163 to SR56 opened in 2011 and newest segment is from Centre City Parkway to SR78. Cost was approximately $1.3 billion.
