PUSD students score high on fitness tests BY STEVE DREYER Newly-released state test scores show that Poway Unified School District students are in good physical condition. The 2015-16 California Physical Fitness Report, made public this week by the California Department of Education, shows local students posting strong scores in six testing

areas. They were: aerobic capacity, body composition, abdominal strength, trunk extension strength and upper body strength. Among the 2,796 fifth graders tested, between 78.2 and 89.7 percent tested exceeded state standards, putting them in the “Healthy Fitness Zone,” according to the state results.

The 2,173 seventh-graders tested ranged between 77.3 and 90.6 percent in the HFZ zone, while the 2,231 tested ninth-graders scored between 79.3 and 97.2 percent in the zone. Fifth and seventh graders scored highest in trunk extension strength, posting an overall 89.7 and 94.1 passing percentages,

Upper body strength was the only test where scores lagged a bit behind when compared with other fitness tests. Twenty-one percent of SEE FITNESS, A11

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Saying they want to know if a group of Westwood residents still want an overnight parking ban in front of their homes, the Rancho Bernardo Planning Board members delayed until January a vote on a petition that requests the ban. This is the board’s third delay in taking a formal position on a petition signed by more than 75 percent of 122 households on streets impacted by an overflow of Waterbridge vehicles into the Westwood neighborhood. The problem has existed for a decade. In June, the RB Planning Board and RB Community Council were each presented a petition signed by those at impacted homes on Poblado Road (from Botero Drive to Capilla Road), Botero Drive, Poblado Court, Poblado Way, Oculto Road, Oculto Court, Oculto Way and Oculto Place. They want the city to impose a two-hour parking limit on their streets between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., which would prevent all vehicles — theirs and Waterbridge’s — from parking on the streets overnight. The petitioners claim that having their streets filled with vehicles parked bumper-to-bumper is a safety hazard, has led to an increase in crime, caused their property values to go down and is a quality of life issue. In June and September both groups tabled their vote in order to give Waterbridge time to find a solution, granting two three-month extensions each. The city wants community input before approving or denying the SEE PLANNERS, A10

PUSD board member apologizes for calling student rep 'coward' BY EMILY SORENSEN Poway Unified School District board member Charles Sellers called student board member Ella Smith a “coward” following her decision to abstain from casting a preferential vote during the board’s Dec. 13 election for clerk. Trouble is, he didn’t know his microphone was on at the time. A video of the meeting also has him saying

newly elected board member Darshana Patel has “no business” being an officer and that he wanted Beatty to be an officer so she could sign her son’s diploma when he graduates this year. The comments were made during a brief break following the election of the new board officers, which took an ugly turn when Sellers and board member Kimberley Beatty were outvoted 3-2 on all three positions.

Sellers said in an email statement Monday that he has spoken with Smith regarding the comments he made about her. “They were inappropriate and unbecoming of a public official and I regret making them,” said Sellers. “I conveyed this to her along with my sincerest apologies.” The comments are audible on the video SEE PUSD, A11

Woman killed in wrong-way, DUI crash was nurse, mother BY DAVID HERNANDEZ A woman who died Saturday night in 4S Ranch after her car was struck by a wrong-way driver accused of drunken driving was a mother and nurse. Sarita Shakya, 38, had been employed at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest since 2010, Scripps Health spokesman Keith Darce said. Outside of work, she was a wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister and sister-in-law, her family said in a statement released by Scripps. “She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her joy, beauty, and enthusiasm for life were heart-warming. She will be greatly missed," her family said. Most of Shakya’s posts on Facebook are photos or videos of her 4-year-old daughter. On Saturday, Shakya was driving a Toyota Corolla westbound on Camino del

The minivan had been headed east in a westbound lane, the California Highway Patrol said. Shakya died before she could be taken to a hospital. A special moment during her time with Scripps came in May 2015 when Shakya

welcomed home a Scripps medical response team that traveled to Nepal after the devastating earthquake. “Sarita, a native of Nepal, was particularly touched by the team’s work and the fact that they visited her family members in Katmandu during the trip,” Darce said. As a sign of her appreciation, she gifted team members with Nepalese scarfs when they arrived at the San Diego International Airport. On Monday, the driver of the Sienna, who was seriously hurt after the crash, remained hospitalized, CHP Officer Jake Sanchez said. An update on her condition was not available. The driver, identified as Alexandria Bayne, is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. Sanchez said her first court hearing may be held at the hospital. BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK By next week many in the community will start disposing of their Christmas trees. There are many free options available. Rancho Bernardo and other City of San Diego neighborhoods will be participating in the city’s 43rd annual Christmas tree recycling program, offered from Dec. 26 through Jan. 23. There are two free options — curbside recycling and utilizing a drop-off location. Curbside recycling is available to residents with yard waste collection service. Trees can be placed in a bin on the regular greenery recycling pickup day, but if the trees are more than four feet in length they should be cut in half. For those who do not want to wait for their pickup day, the city is providing 16 drop-off locations. These include designated parking lot areas at Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive, and Canyonside Recreation Center, 12350 Black Mountain Road in Rancho Penasquitos. Green and flocked (fake snow) trees are accepted. All tree stands, lights, ornaments, tinsel and other decorations must be removed. No artificial trees are accepted. For details, go to recyclingworks.com or call 858-694-7000. In Poway, EDCO will pick up Christmas trees from single-family residences during their regular curbside pickup from Dec. 27 through Jan. 7. There will be no trash or tree pickup on Monday, Jan. 2. To prepare Christmas trees for recycling — including flocked trees — remove all ornaments, tinsel and the tree stand. Cut in half if taller than four feet. Tree segments may also be placed in the green waste container or branches can be bundled together with twine.

Other organic decorations, such as garland and wreaths, can also be placed in the green waste container. For additional information, go to edcodisposal.com or call 858-748-7769. In 4S Ranch, PinWaste will be picking up Christmas trees for free on Thursday, Dec. 29 and Thursday, Jan. 5 from residential curbsides. To ensure pickup, trees must be placed at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on those days. To participate, all lights, ornaments, tinsel and tree stands must be removed. The trees also need to be cut in four-foot sections. No flocked trees will be accepted. For questions, call 858-848-9278, send an email to Service@PinWaste.com or go to PinWaste.com.

Del Norte High cellist wins national honor BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK A Del Norte High junior has earned national honors for being the best high school cellist. Valerie Chen, 16, recently won the first chair cello position at the All-National Honor Symphony Orchestra competition in Grapevine, Texas. This was Chen’s second time to be selected to perform with the group. “I had a good time meeting different kinds of people ... from all over,” Chen said. “We love music and bond over that.” She added, “It’s inspiring to see so many young musicians dedicated (to their art), the camaraderie ... it’s really cool.” Chen said, “Another reason why I enjoy participating in these honor ensembles is because I learn all kinds of things — from musicality to life lessons — from the conductors.” Jennifer Kitelinger, Del Norte’s instrumental music director, said Chen’s selection “basically makes her the top high school cellist in the nation. ... To even have a student get into the All-National honors ensembles just once is a huge honor. This is her second year making it in ... and she took first chair.” To qualify, Chen had to be selected for California’s All-State High School Symphony Orchestra before advancing to the national competition’s audition. She qualified for All-State in her freshman and sophomore years (this year’s has yet to occur) and All-National her sophomore and junior years. She also had to submit letters of recommendation. All musicians played the same pieces during the national audition. This year’s selections were Herctor Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14” and Arturo Márquez’s “Danzón No. 2.” The All-National convention featured several ensembles, including symphony orchestra, jazz ensemble, mixed choir and concert band, Chen said. At the end of their three-day “boot camp” each participated in a combined concert. “She’s absolutely talented, but you can not go this far without working hard,” Kitelinger said. “At Del Norte, when talking with other teachers, (I hear how) Valerie is so humble, so amazing, but she will say ‘No, I’m not that great. It’s just what I can do.’ She does what she can do to help everybody else out and be better. “She’s just an amazing person, one of those kids you love to have in the classroom, so given to mentoring other cello students,” Kitelinger said. “It’s awesome to see someone so talented be so giving with their time.” The 4S Ranch campus has 12 cellists in its orchestra, according to Kitelinger. Because of Chen’s music and leadership abilities, she is not only the school orchestra’s principal cellist, but also its president, a position not typically held by a junior according to Kitelinger. Chen is also president of Del Norte’s Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter. Members tutor younger musicians and perform in the community, especially at nursing homes. Chen said she began her music lessons by playing the piano, but switched to the cello eight years ago. It is an instrument Chen said she always wanted to play. “I loved the way it sounds,” Chen said.

“(Many) say it sounds most like the human voice, with a register that is high, low ... it’s a sound that is very soothing and pleasing due to the different range of emotions. It’s pretty cool.” In addition to studying music at Del Norte, the daughter of 4S Ranch residents Tien-chi and Yi-Liang Chen goes to Los Angeles each Saturday so she can study at the Colburn Music Academy with Professor Clive Greensmith. In 2014 she also joined the La Jolla Symphony, where she is its youngest and only high school member. Despite all her time spent studying music, Chen said she is undecided on whether to pursue a music career. “I’m still exploring what I’d like to do, but I’m definitely considering it,” Chen said. Her achievements, however, “are creating pathways for her to follow that line of work if she wants to,” Kitelinger said. Being first chair is nothing new to Chen. It is a position she earned many times since her childhood during county-level competitions in New York before her family moved to 4S Ranch right before her freshman year. Chen said first chair includes a lot of responsibility. At All-National, for example, the 15 other cellists watched for her cues regarding bowing and stylistic nuances. “There is definitely a lot of communication and interacting, body language while playing and in rehearsals fixing problems ... (with) bowing and fingering so we stylistically match up,” she said. “Especially for string instruments it is a balance issue.” Even though she spends a lot of time studying music, Chen said she balances her high school experience with other activities. These include being on the swim team, in Math Club and National Honor Society. Her other interests include science, learning languages, helping others, reading, writing, arts and crafts, baking and social studies.

Petco’s Piscitello fills chamber leadership role early Says organization helps small, medium-size businesses grow BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Charlie Piscitello has just become the North San Diego Business Chamber’s new board chairman, a position he was going to assume next July 1. Piscitello is succeeding Keith Wilschetz of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, who due to a job transfer to Los Angeles had to step down early from his year-long term in the leadership role. Piscitello was chairman-elect on the 2016-17 board. He is the senior vice president and chief people officer of Petco plus president of the Petco Foundation. Piscitello said he has been with the company since March 2007. The new chairman said he joined the chamber’s board two years ago when Petco — which was founded in San Diego in 1965 — relocated its national support center from the Miramar area to Rancho Bernardo. “We made a big investment in this area,” he said. The headquarter’s move led to him meeting chamber President and CEO Debra Rosen and being invited to join the board. The regional chamber is also based in Rancho Bernardo. The Wisconsin native, who earned his bachelor’s degree in business and communication from Marquette University, said the chamber is one of the few accredited with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and highly fiscally responsible. “I think people should check it out because there are a lot of opportunities to foster relationships and advance commerce,” he said. Piscitello said the board’s role is to assist the chamber staff implement the organization’s strategic

stakeholders and called the chamber “a good organization to be a part of.” He said the chamber does a lot within the community, mentioning some of its more recent offerings such as Operation Connect to help military personnel transition to civilian careers, something he called “critically important for this region,” and its efforts to develop new leaders through its Leadership Academy. “All the events it holds provide businesses with networking opportunities and future growth,” he said. “It does an outstanding job, (but) there’s always room to continually evolve and grow ... to be more impactful in the community the chamber serves.” He added, “The vast majority (of members) are not large businesses, but small and medium businesses. That’s the focus of the chamber. Our goal is to continue building a vibrant community in the North San Diego region, which is largely made up of small businesses. “We’re always looking for ways for businesses to develop new talent and create relationships that are mutually beneficial,” he said. “The chamber’s services help all become stronger and I encourage (prospective members) to check it out and be open to the possibility they can get from it. It’s incredibly valuable.” As for his favorite programs the chamber offers, Piscitello mentioned its annual San Diego Women’s Week because it has “a fantastic set of events” plus Operation Connect. Regarding the latter, he said, “Helping the military transition successfully from military to civilian lives, there nothing more important for the San Diego region. Creating jobs, fostering growth and helping the military ... is fabulous for San Diego and the region.”

FROM PLANNERS, A1 petition request. The RB Community Council is to vote on the petition at its 6:30 p.m. Jan. 5 meeting in the RB Library. The council’s meetings in 2017 are moving from the fourth to the first Thursday of the month. The next planning board meeting is at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 in the RB Swim & Tennis Club. At the Dec. 15 planning board meeting, a motion was made stating that while the board did not see the ban as “a viable solution” to the parking problem, it would “support the petitioners if they still want the signs.” But when members heard from board Vice President Robin Kaufman that at its recent traffic and transportation committee meeting only one community member attended — a Waterbridge resident opposing the ban — and at the community council’s public safety meeting only one parking ban supporter — a Westwood resident — attended, they started to question whether those who signed the petition last spring still felt the same way. In addition, there was no one at the Dec. 15 meeting to speak for either side. Board Chairman Mike Lutz said he was concerned that if the ban is implemented the vehicles will be relocated to other parts of Westwood, which at previous meetings had their residents speak against the ban. Kaufman said police have told her that enforcing the ban would be low on their priorities list compared to other crimes in the city. In addition, the parking enforcement division closes at 7 p.m., she

said. Board members also said Waterbridge representatives in recent months have been working hard to create more parking within their complex, but partial solutions — such as getting a tandem parking variance — takes time to get through city bureaucracy. Lutz said he spoke with Westwood Club manager Steve Fluss about the possibility of Waterbridge vehicles being parked at the club, but said based on their conversation it is not likely to ever happen. “There is no point in this (ban) if they install this ... but there is nobody to enforce it,” said board member Bettyann Pernice. “It’s expensive ... a waste of money and will hurt two other communities and not solve Waterbridge’s (problem). The petitioners have garages and driveways and admit they (all) don’t use them. They just do not want (vehicles) parked in front of their houses.” Lutz said if implemented the ban would continue to put pressure on Waterbridge to solve its problem, noting its representatives have made faster progress since the possibility of a ban was presented. Westwood residents complained in 2006 about the overflow parking problem created by a space deeding system implemented after Waterbridge was converted from apartments to condos. At that time they tried to get a parking ban implemented, but their efforts were halted when Waterbridge officials promised to find a solution if given a little more time. Once the issue died down, little if any progress was made in the subsequent years until this summer after Westwood residents mobilized again.

Tony Gwynn statue sculpting complete The statue will next be cast in bronze BY EMILY SORENSEN The statue of Tony Gwynn is nearing the completion of its sculpting phase and will be heading to be cast in bronze next week. Seth Vandable, the Texas sculptor who designed and sculpted the statue of Gwynn, said he was in the final days of sculpting the statue and would be sending it to the foundry on Jan. 2. “The piece is coming along nicely,” he said. “I’m excited, it’s looking really good.” The statue shows Gwynn raising his cap while holding his young daughter and was one of about 30 designed submitted from artists across the country. It was recommended for approval by a selection panel that included Gwynn family members, local art experts and Mayor Steve Vaus. Casting the statue in bronze will take between three and four months, Vandable said. The final bronze statue will be 11 feet, 1-inch tall. The Poway City Council approved Vandable’s design in April and over $168,000 has been raised for the statue and the memorial it will stand in, which will be installed at Lake Poway at the baseball field. Vaus said that

According to the city’s fundraising website, while the sculpture and Vandable’s fees have been covered, an additional $17,000 is needed to complete the plaza that will surround the statue. Donations can be made at crowdrise.com/tonygwynn or in person at Poway City Hall. The plaza will include a donor’s wall and seating. Vandable said he began working on sculpting the final statue in late summer. His start was delayed while the city and members of the Gwynn family worked on coming to a consensus on the details of the statue. Getting Gwynn’s expression right

took the longest, Vandable said. “A lot of (the delay) was getting the maquette (a small version of the statue used for preliminary design work before committing to the final statue) exactly as we wanted it,” he said. Vandable has been a full-time sculptor since the early 1990s and has created several large pieces for public spaces like parks and memorials across the country. He said he also does smaller pieces for gallery showings, but large public pieces are what he mainly creates. He is the creator behind a 40-foot piece on display in Wyoming that is one of the largest bronze sculptures in the world, he said. He said his inspiration for his winning design came from the city wanting something that showed Gwynn more as a family man than a famous baseball player. “The city was looking for something that reflected him as more than just swinging a bat,” Vandable said. “I wanted to show more of his personality.” Vaus said what he liked best about the statue’s design was that it captured who Gwynn was beyond a famous baseball player. “It really captures the man, the dad, the neighbor,” said Vaus. “You can’t ask for more than that.”

When body composition was measured, 13.5 percent of PUSD’s fifth graders, 13.9 percent of seventh graders and 13.1 percent of ninth graders were listed as needing improvement. Results from individual PUSD schools can be found at tinyurl.com/jf6bsvp. Countywide, 28.6 percent of fifth graders fulfilled all six fitness criteria, along with 37.8 percent of seventh graders and 44.5 percent of ninth graders, according to the state. of seventh graders and 36.7 percent of ninth graders. Those numbers were all down from the previous year. “Good nutrition, proper rest and exercise are key ingredients for success in the classroom and in life,'' said Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction. “This year’s physical fitness test results, which are down very slightly, remind all of us as educators, parents and community leaders that we need to convey this message to our children,” Torlakson said. “One of the best ways to do that is by eating healthy foods and exercising so we can serve as role models for healthy living, not only for the sake of our children, but also for the future health of our communities and our state.” The City News Service contributed to this story.

FROM PUSD, A1 recording of the meeting, available on the district’s website, powayusd.com, beginning at about 44 minutes 30 seconds and continuing for a little over a minute. In this time frame, the microphones pick up Sellers telling newly elected board clerk Darshana Patel that she has “no business” being an officer. He also referred to Smith, a senior at Westview High School, as a coward for abstaining during the third vote. “Wow, I can’t believe Darsh voted for herself. Brand new board member,” Sellers is shown saying to Beatty, who agrees. Sellers is picked up the clearest in the video, which only has bits of pieces of audio for Beatty and Patel. Sellers then said to Patel that he wanted Beatty as an officer because her son is graduating and he wanted Beatty to sign his diploma. “You are a brand new board member,” he said to Patel in the video, “You have no business being an officer.” Patel’s response was not picked up by the microphone. Sellers then said, “When we had three of them and had no choice, we had to make one an officer.” The microphone cuts out and then Sellers said that “it wasn’t the job I wanted and it wasn’t the job the board needed me to do.” After more silence, Beatty is recorded saying “There’s no point in talking to her” and Sellers responds “I’m shocked, I really am,” before saying “Oh, and Ella’s a coward.” Beatty then said, “She goes with the majority.” Smith cast non-binding preferential votes for Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff over Sellers for board president and T.J. Zane over Sellers for board vice-president. She abstained from voting for Beatty or Patel for clerk. Smith said Monday in an email, “One of my personal goals on the Board of Education has been to be seen as a ‘student board member,’ rather than just a ‘representative.’ I have been determined to prove myself by constantly offering my perspective to Board members and always voting in the best interest of students. Never did I imagine that voicing my concerns and participating in the election of the Board officers would result in one elected board member labeling me a coward during December’s Board meeting,” she said. She also said that she didn’t believe she was a coward. “I participate in discussions on the dais (including those of the election just minutes prior), cast my student preferential vote,

which is asked before the rest of the board, and offer my rationale to the Board. In all votes, including the officer election in December, I vote with my conscience. Since the student preferential vote is asked for before the rest of the board votes, I do not simply vote with the majority, as another board member suggested. It is disappointing to witness elected board members plead for consensus and harmony among the Board, and minutes later, when they believe their mics are off, chastise another board member for being elected Clerk and then call the student board member a coward for simply disagreeing,” said Smith. Sellers said he is “content to let stand” his comments about Patel. “She ran for office as a purported champion of collaboration. Yet, when given her first opportunity to demonstrate leadership in this arena, she failed miserably. In what was clearly an orchestrated plan to control the board officer positions, and with it the board itself, she chose to align with her longtime friend Ms. O’Connor-Ratcliff instead of demonstrating the independence she claimed to possess during the campaign,” said Sellers. Sellers on Monday said that when he declined the nomination for clerk and offered the position to Beatty instead, the other members of the board “were clearly surprised and did not know how to act.” “Rather than simply accept my nomination of Ms. Beatty in the spirit of board harmony, Ms. O’Connor-Ratcliff defiantly looked me in the eye and nominated Ms. Patel. Ms. Patel then had not one, but two, chances to do the magnanimous thing and refuse the position. Instead she chose to accept the nomination and vote for herself, in spite of having less than an hour of service under her belt, effectively rejecting what is supposed to be a board democracy and perpetuating the existing board divisiveness,” Sellers said.

EDITORIAL

Thank you, Andy Patapow THUMBS UP to Andy Patapow, who last week retired from the Poway Unified School District Board of Education after 20 years, which were preceded by nearly 30 years serving as principal of the Abraxas Continuation High School. Throughout his long career in education Patapow never lost his focus on the needs of students, especially if they did not fit into a traditional school environmental or were facing personal issues that detracted from getting a good education. Yes, he was pro-school administration all the way when it came to his service on the school board. He believed in following due process and in staying out of the day-to-day operations of the district. Fault him if you will for his support of the controversial capital improvement bonds and for his to-the-end backing of fired Supt. John Collins, but not for his dedication to the district and the welfare of its students. THUMBS DOWN to officials of Palomar Health for their decision to rename Pomerado Hospital “Palomar Medical Center Poway.” Sorry, it just doesn’t sound right after 39 years. The change appears to be purely for marketing reasons and officials are assuring everyone that “The warm community feeling that makes it a special places will always be a part of the hospital.” Maybe, but it feels to us like an important little piece of Poway’s character has been taken away. THUMBS UP to the City of Poway for hanging beautiful new outdoor holiday lights along Midland Road near Old Poway Park. They are an improvement to the all-blue lights that adorned trees along the road for the past couple of seasons. THUMBS DOWN to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors for using the consent calendar at a recent meeting to give preliminary approval to a proposal by Supervisor Ron Roberts to increase board pay by $19,000 per year. Since 1998, supervisors have made 80 percent of what a superior court judge makes. Roberts wants to increase that to 90 percent by the end of next year, increasing salaries from $153,289 to $172,450. Placing the matter on the consent calendar gave the impression Roberts wanted to slip it by the public. The board will take a final vote on the matter at its Jan. 10 meeting. A full discussion should be held prior to that happening. THUMBS UP to Rancho Bernardo dog owners who are calling on the city to improve conditions at the dog park at the RB Community Park. We agree with them that something needs to be done to restore the park so that there’s turf, rather than bare dirt in the pens, and fresh water is again available. Rather than focusing on finger-pointing, we’d like to see RB community leaders and the city, perhaps through the office of Councilman Mark Kersey, work together to resolve the issue in a timely manner.

OUR READERS WRITE Fortress Poway I recently stopped by the Poway Sherriff’s Station in an attempt to discuss a traffic flow issue at Tierra Bonita Elementary School. I walked into the lobby of the station and discovered that the front desk was completely encased and fortified with bullet-proof glass. No one was at the front desk and a sign notified the public that all interaction with the staff is to be done via a prison-style wall mounted phone. After ringing the door bell, a staff member reluctantly came out to behind the bullet-proof glass and I requested to see the captain. A few moments later, two heavily-armed deputies came out from behind the locked metal door and immediately assumed takedown flanking positions. We had a lovely discussion about the issue and no one was harmed, but the whole setting is very disturbing. Did Sherriff Gore not get the memo that Poway is the safest city in the county? Why are the sheriff’s deputies hiding behind bullet-proof glass and locked steel doors? Do we really need to perform interaction with the public via prison-style phones? Why do sheriff’s deputies interact with the public fully armed and only in pairs? Do they sit at their desks fully armed? One cannot but help think that Sheriff Gore sees the public as an enemy. If the sheriff believes that the law enforcement community is part of the community – they need to act like part of the community. Assi Friedman Poway

Thanks to Patapow My husband and I, with our three children, have lived in Poway for the past 25 years. Like most families we were drawn to Poway, largely because of its reputation of having exceptional schools. Our children attended Painted Rock Elementary, Twin Peaks Middle School and Poway High. The education they received served them well. Our two sons went on to receive bachelor’s degrees at UC Santa Barbara and our daughter at Texas Christian University. We feel the stewardship of the past school board and superintendent made it possible for our children

to be prepared as well as they were for higher education. We thank retired board member Andy Patapow for his commitment to the “kids” in our community and hope the new school board will strive to serve the children of this area according to the students’ best interest, as he has done in the past. Move toward center America is not as politically divided as is claimed by some, but rather suffers from much stonewalling by a caucus within one of its major parties, which over the years has become routine. For example, it has for decades been clear that our health insurance system is inferior to what you found long ago in several other countries. As soon as the Democrats tried to initiate a program, they ran into automatic total rejection instead of constructive input from opposition. A prominent contributor to your paper is gloating over the very hollow victory of the GOP and he still continues his merciless tirades against President Obama and that party. The GOP needs to move back closer to the center where it used to be, or it will eventually face a major shipwreck. Somehow the word “compromise” must be reinserted into the political dictionary. Column almost rational Barry Cronin’s Dec. 8 column “Making the best of a bad situation” seemed almost rational. There is much in this piece with which I agree. Neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump were particularly good choices and the media and pundits did a horrendous job. However, while Cronin disavows being a Trump “disciple,” he presents a number of false comparisons and near-apologies on his behalf, leaving the reader wondering. Cronin compares Trump not releasing his tax returns to all the things our current commander-in-chief failed to release. Really? How SEE LETTERS, A15

An updated ‘Christmas Carol’

A

s Donald Trump strolled out of his gilded elevator at Trump Tower last week he was approached by Bob Civil Servant who works at the Department of Energy. “Excuse me, sir,” Bob beckoned, “may I have Christmas Day off to be with my family?” “Well, that all depends,” answered Mr. Trump, “do you believe in climate change?” “Why yes sir, I do. It has been my life’s work.” “Well then, no paid holiday for you! Be gone!” That night, Trump is visited in a dream by Charles Ponzi who, prior to Trump, was the most famous con artist in American history. Ponzi was a supreme mastermind of malevolent reality-manipulation, preying on people's hopes, fears, and their propensity for believing what they wish were true. Known for shortchanging his customers, Ponzi was determined throughout his life to become wealthy and famous at any cost. He had a luxurious lifestyle and brought in cash at a fantastic rate. However, the simplest

financial analysis showed that he wasn’t actually making money. He was losing it rapidly. For every dollar he took in, he went more deeply into debt. People eventually became suspicious and the press started publishing negative articles about him. But as long as money kept flowing in, Ponzi stayed ahead of his eventual collapse. Ponzi shows Trump the suffering he created with his Ponzi scheme and aftermath of the scheme breaking down. The following night, the Ghost of Christmas Past visits Trump and takes Trump to Christmas scenes of his boyhood and youth. This reminds him of a time when he was kinder and more innocent. These scenes portray Trump's lonely childhood, his being bullied and his relationship with his abusive father and cold mother. The following night, the Ghost of Christmas Present takes Trump to a joy-filled Trader Joe's where people are buying the makings for their Christmas celebrations. Trump and the ghost

Will lawmakers deep-six exit exam?

N

o high school exit exams have been administered in California over the last two years, but the test is due to return in 2018, by which time it is to be reconfigured to conform with the math and language arts skills now being taught in public schools under the federally-inspired Common Core curriculum system. This means that for at least the last two years, employers hiring new high school graduates haven’t known for sure what they were getting. What’s more, employers now considering adding to their payrolls folks who have graduated since the exam began in 2006 are in the same quandary, forced to hire blindly when it comes to knowing what applicants have learned. That’s because the same law that suspended the test while it’s being redone also allowed diplomas to everyone who ever failed it but met all other graduation requirements. At the time, one large newspaper featured a happy-talk story about a young woman who repeatedly failed the math portion of the exam. She was suddenly free to pursue a registered nurse degree. Would you want to take drug doses calculated by this young woman? Now the state’s two-term schools superintendent Tom Torlakson wants to make this sort of situation permanent.

Torlakson told the state Board of Education in a memo that the exit exam long since outlived its usefulness as a performance screen. “California has embarked on a path toward preparing all students for college careers and life in the 21st Century through a focus on performance, equity and continuous improvement,” he said. “This is a path where (local school boards) take on an increased role in designing the kindergarten through 12th grade educational structures and supports for students to reach their full potential. Because of the comprehensive resources now available to identify students in academic need at lower grades, (the exam) is no longer necessary.” Come on, Tom. You know just because a third-grader might be identified as needing help in science or math or English doesn’t mean that kid will eventually learn anything in those subject areas. You know it doesn’t hurt to take the exam, which was passed in its heyday by 95 percent of high schoolers. Fortunately, Torlakson will not have the final say. It would take a vote of the Legislature and a signature from the governor to dump the exit exam for good. But in this politically correct era (at least in California), it’s just possible that the fact remediation is available to students will trump the fact that not all students identified

also visit Bob's late-night Christmas celebration. Bob introduces his youngest son, Tim, who is happy but seriously impaired from a traumatic brain injury. The spirit informs Trump that if Obamacare is repealed Tim will lose his insurance and will no longer be eligible to receive rehabilitation services or home health care. Then Bob will have to quit his job in order to stay home and care for Tim and the family will sink irrevocably into poverty. Before disappearing, the spirit shows Trump two gremlins named Ignorance and Hubris. He tells Trump to beware of Ignorance above all and explains that Hubris will doom his presidency if he is not careful to avoid it. A third spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come, visits Trump the next night and shows him scenes involving the death of a widely disliked and discredited man who looks eerily familiar. When Trump asks the ghost to show him anyone who feels any emotion over the man's death, the ghost can only show him Vladimir Putin sobbing uncontrollably. After this, Trump asks to see some tenderness connected with any death, the ghost shows him Bob and his family huddled in a drafty trailer home, sadly and lovingly mourning the passing of Tim. The ghost then shows Trump a grave on the flooded plains of lower Manhattan. The tombstone bears Trump's name. Shocked and deeply moved, he pledges to the ghost that he will mend his ways to avoid this outcome.

with needs ever avail themselves of the help they are now offered. Testing remains the only way to weed out those who don’t and thus prevent them from essentially duping potential future employers into assuming they know things they don’t. Even the story of the putative nurse illustrates how well the exit exam filled its main purpose while it was in use. That purpose was as a kind of certification that any high school graduate in the state could safely be assumed to know things that could not be presumed during the era of social promotion preceding its adoption in 2005. Suspending the exam, as lawmakers did when they passed a bill by Democratic state Sen. Carol Liu of La Canada-Flintridge, unnecessarily ended that certainty. Even if the exam needed rewriting, there was no reason any rewrite required several years to perform. It easily could have been rewritten in less than a year, especially since the new Common Core curriculum was well-known and discussed for several years before California abandoned the exit exam. The bottom line: Torlakson is flat wrong on this one. The exam should not be abandoned just because a relative few kids couldn’t pass it. Rather, because students always had multiple chances at the test, those who fail on their first, second or even third try still can have plenty of time to study the subjects they failed and reverse their results. There’s no reason for other students not to get the benefits of passing the exam just because some are insufficiently motivated to improve. Trump awakens on Christmas morning with joy and love in his heart. He holds a press conference promising to protect the environment, raise the minimum wage and provide universal health care for all. Now, with love in his heart, he stops belittling average citizens who challenge his statements and the press for doing its job. He denounces hatred, racism and foreign interference in U.S. elections. Rather than cynically and disingenuously pandering to the working poor, and then serving the interests of the super-rich, he says he now understands their plight and fights for them. He fires Steve Bannon for fanning the flames of bigotry and Michael Flynn for inciting violence through the promulgation of fake news. He fires the political hacks that make up his cabinet and replaces them with actual experts in their fields who will serve the greater good rather than representing the special interests of the super-rich. A changed man, Trump now realizes that what makes America great is not its wealth or the size of its military. What makes America great is the kindness, grit, compassion, fairness and tolerance of its citizens. Trump, who now embodies the spirit of Christmas, is able to once again sleep through the night, and is never again visited by a ghost or compelled to send 4 a.m. Tweets to his enemies. Roost is a former Poway resident who now lives in Encintas.

FROM LETTERS, A14 many presidents have been incessantly harassed to release their birth certificates? Not one, but well, they were white. Hillary used a private server. No question, it was absolutely wrong. But the results of exhaustive year-long investigations were that they simply couldn’t find anything to charge her with other than being stupid. So when Cronin says, “Right. When donkeys fly” as if Trump was being somehow unfairly treated … my friend, the donkeys flew the coop a while ago. Cronin also notes that Trump appointed a bunch of private sector CEOs to the Strategic and Policy Forum because he doesn’t want to be “the smartest person in the room.” You forget, he always has to be the “smartest” in the room (remember he knows more about military matters than all our generals). For the sake of our country I sincerely hope Trump eventually governs well. But hope and about $5 might only get you a donkey photo in Tijuana. Cronin should be sure to wear his disciple robe. Of Trump and pirates How difficult was it for columnist Dick Lyles to choke down his last ounce of self-respect in order to endorse Donald Trump? When he did so, I found it very sad. Here was Dick Lyles, a man who always has portrayed himself as defending virtue in a world of sin, embracing a pathological liar who boasted about sexually assaulting women, insulted the parents of an American soldier killed in combat, refused to come clean about his taxes, mocked the disabled, refused to denounce the hate groups who supported him and gleefully sought and accepted the unlawful assistance of Vladimir Putin. In view of all this, not to mention the fact that Trump lost to Hillary Clinton by almost three million votes and is a minority president by over 10 million, how can Lyles demand, as he did on Dec. 15, that those who opposed Trump’s election unite behind Trump when he has made no effort whatsoever to reach out to them? Instead, Trump has offered nothing but ridicule, insults and a bleak picture of the future. Trump has ignored intelligence briefings and conflict-of-interest norms. He has stumbled over one sensitive diplomatic issue after another. Together with a crew fit for a pirate ship, Trump is planning tax breaks for the very rich, the destruction of a healthcare program that benefits millions of needy Americans, and the institutionalization of religious and racial prejudice. Donald Trump is a creature whom Ronald Reagan (and Dick Lyles I once thought) would have thrown out the door. Charles R. McKirdy Poway

Poway Has it All!

Deputies arrest man running from DUI checkpoint in Poway Two sheriff’s deputies received minor scrapes and bruises while chasing down a suspected drunk driver who had fled his vehicle on foot at a sobriety checkpoint in Poway on Saturday night. Sgt. David Cheever said Bren L. Leroux was being evaluated at the Twin Peaks Road checkpoint and was about to be arrested when he began running away. He was apprehended after a short foot chase, Cheever said, and was arrested and booked at the county jail on suspicion of drunk driving and resisting arrest. The deputies were treated at the scene by paramedics, Cheever said.

It was the only DUI arrest during the checkpoint, which ran from 9 p.m. Saturday to 2:10 a.m. Sunday, Cheever said. Four citations were issued: two for unlicensed drivers, one for driving with a suspended license and one for driving with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. A total of 1,223 vehicles passed through the checkpoint on the eastbound side of the 13500 block of Twin Peaks Road, Cheever said. A total of 654 vehicles were screened in the primary inspection area and 18 were sent to a secondary area for further evaluation.

Blistering start for locals turning heads The boys soccer season is off to a blazing start, as Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Del Norte are off to a combined 15-2-4 record. The Titans lead the way, as they have raced out to an 9-2-1 record through Monday. Amazingly, Poway has not allowed more than one goal in any of its 12 contests. The Titans already own huge wins over Crawford, Cathedral Catholic, Point Loma and twice over Canyon Crest Academy. Eduardo Ramirez has four goals on the young season, while John Collier and Cameron Hirsh each have two. Chris Sanchez leads the team with four assists. Rancho Bernardo is 4-1 and has scored nine goals over its five games. Del Norte is undefeated at 3-0-2 and has found the back of the net a whopping 19 times in its first five contests. The Nighthawks scored eight times against Mira Mesa and six times against Pacific Ridge.

Girls Poway is off to its best start in years, sitting with a 6-1-2 record through its first nine games. The Titans have won two straight and have posted six shutouts this year. Four different players lead the team with three goals each (freshman Sydney Kallmann, seniors Lauren Hess and Janelle Bernal and junior Sarah Aragon). Poway’s lone loss came to Steele Canyon in the semifinals of the Butch Lee Memorial Tournament. Meanwhile, Rancho Bernardo is also off to a strong start. The Broncos are 2-1-1 and have solid wins on their resume, including a 4-1 victory over Bishop’s and a 1-0 win over West Hills. Perennial powerhouse Cathedral Catholic is the only team to hand Rancho Bernardo a loss.

NEW BEGINNINGS Nighthawks, local teams off to fast starts

BY TERRY MONAHAN A swimmer until she got to Del Norte High, Bailey Deck is now trying to contend for a Palomar League championship in a completely different sport. Deck looked for a new sport and found herself staying in the pool, trying out for the girls water polo team at Del Norte. Now she’s one of the mainstays of the Nighthawks, who are off to a 7-1 start in their initial season in the Palomar League after winning the Avocado East League crown last season. “The first day of water polo I fell in love with the sport,’’ said the 5-foot-6 Deck, a driver for the Nighthawks. “Now swimming is so boring. It’s a chore for me because I love water polo so much. “I think we all like playing in this league more. We know how much tougher this will be. “We had no competition in our old league. This year we’ve changed our whole outlook to make this switch. We love this challenge.’’ Westview figures to contend for the league crown, but Del Norte could be right there if the Wolverines falter at all. Rancho Bernardo and Poway are lurking in the wings, too. Mt. Carmel and Pacific Ridge are also in the new league. Here is a closer look at the local teams:

The

inclusion of the two freshmen defenders has added some depth to the starting lineup, which features Sophia Zamoyski, Czajka, Deck and Dennis. “The girls are thrilled to be play in a league of the other schools in the Poway district,’’ Avila said. “They aren’t just satisfied with last year. Each girl just wants Del Norte to be competitive.’’ Del Norte established itself as a contender by reaching the championship game in the Rancho Bernardo Invitational, losing to Westview 15-5. Titans' Hovis in search of fourth state title

tunein tunein

BY TERRY MONAHAN The first time Quentin Hovis walked into the wrestling building at Poway High after transferring, one thing he noticed was the honor list of state champions on the wall above the workout mat. Hovis entered the building with an impressive resume already. The 5-foot-10 grappler is already a state champion, a three-time state champion at Seton Catholic Prep in Chandler, Arizona. “I’ve never been in a wrestling room like Poway,’’ Hovis said. “I’ve seen some colleges with rooms like this. “It’s definitely not like my old room at Seton Catholic. It was about the size of the side room the freshmen use here. “I know I’m the new kid here, but I really want my name on the wall as a Poway state champion.’’ Hovis’ roots in sports date back to his time in judo years ago when the family was living on Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. The San Diego native lived in paradise until the family relocated to Arizona when Hovis was 10. Reluctantly, Hovis made the decision to move into wrestling and leave judo behind.

“I went back and forth between the two sports, but I couldn’t get to college on a judo scholarship,’’ Hovis said. “Every now and then, a judo move will come out and everyone starts laughing.’’ Had the wrestling program at Seton Catholic not fallen apart when the coach resigned, Hovis would not have become a Titan in search of state title No. 4. While most of his former teammates moved on to other Chandler-area high schools, he went west. “It was a little rough to say goodbye to my former friends and teammates,’’ Hovis said. “I knew Poway was a good program. I had wrestled Poway guys over the years.’’ Hovis remembered wrestling Scott Kiyono, who is now a teammate at Poway, when he was still in Arizona. According to Hovis, he won two of his three matches against Kiyono. “We remembered each other,’’ Hovis said, laughing. “I saw a few photos of the two of us at age 12.’’ Since then, Hovis became a state champion. “I was a little surprised to get that medal freshman year,’’ Hovis said. “Sophomore year I came to the state

finals to win it. “Last year there was a lot more pressure. It keeps building. I had a real big target on my back.’’ That target, even though he changed states, has gotten even bigger at Poway. “Quentin could be a state champion from anywhere and be a stud,’’ Poway coach Wayne Branstetter said. “He’s legit. He’s competed at the highest levels. “You know within five minutes on the mat that he’s a stud. He’s not intimidated by anything or anyone.’’ Hovis presently is ranked No. 1 in the state at 152 pounds. Thanks to a 5-2 win over David Carr of Massillon Perry in the finals of the prestigious Walsh Ironman Invitational at Walsh Jesuit High in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Hovis is now ranked No. 1 in the nation. “The game plan is still the same,’’ Hovis said. “Win the state title.’’ Next season, Hovis will continue wrestling at the Naval Academy to continue the family tradition. “My grandparents were in the Navy and I’ve run into so many former Navy guys since we moved here,’’ Hovis added. Prep Girls Basketball

Broncos, Titans could meet in SoCal Holiday Prep Classic BY TERRY MONAHAN Jay Trousdale has a number of reasons why he brings his team back to the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic year after year. Success is one of them. He has coached his girls basketball team at Poway to the championship match of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic a few times and has even won the crown. That isn’t the only reason for the Titans’ continued appearance in the largest in-season tournament on the West Coast, which will run Dec. 27-30 this year. The San Diego Section’s all-time leader in wins says the tournament is also good precursor to playing in the Palomar League because of the level of competition. In addition, he likes the general feeling of seeing teams from other leagues as well as from out of town. “It’s a good tournament for a number of reasons,’’ Trousdale said. “That’s why we keep coming back.’’ This year might be a little different, though. Poway is playing in the NCAA Gold Division. The Titans are in Pool A with Fullerton Rosary Academy, Mater Dei Catholic and Las Vegas Desert Oasis. In Pool B of the same division is a familiar foe. Rancho Bernardo is joined by San Marcos, Bingham (Utah) and Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro, which beat Poway in last year’s NCAA Black Division.

Poway and Rancho Bernardo could meet on the final day depending on how each team does during three days of pool play. “It will be a tough week no matter who we play on the final day,’’ Trousdale said. “It will be our toughest week to this point.’’ Poway is off to an 8-1 start, matching the overall record for Rancho Bernardo. “You get a lot of questions answered about your team in this tournament,’’ Trousdale said. “It also gives me a chance to scout teams we’ll be playing in January and February because most of those teams are also playing in the tournament. “Normally, you can avoid league opponents.’’ Poway’s lone loss was to Scripps Ranch 34-33 in the Varsity Tip-Off Classic on Dec. 12. Rancho Bernardo has a pair of quality wins against Torrey Pines, last year’s NCAA Gold Division champion, and Scripps Ranch 47-43. The Broncos’ lone loss was to Serra 53-44 last Friday. Eight players on this year’s Rancho Bernardo team were on the team in 2015 when the Broncos won the San Diego Section Division III championship. “I’ve learned about the ebb and flows of a season,’’ said Broncos coach Kyle Williamson. “This tournament will back SEE BASKETBALL, B4

Rancho Bernardo ■ Coach: Fred Gleason ■ 2015-16 record: 9-20 ■ Division: I ■ Key players: Driver, Naomi Teal, Sr.; 2-meters, Michael Barten, So.; Driver, Annelise Ilog, Jr.; Driver, Margeaux Pierquin, Fr.; Driver, Elena Pena, Fr.; Goalie, Mikayla Eskew, Sr. ■ Outlook: The Broncos got off to a 5-3 start with two one-point losses to Rancho Buena Vista being the biggest blemishes thus far. Coney Island Pizzeria’s dedication to making New York Style pizza draws in customers who are originally from the east coast and miss the pizza from there. Opened 15 years ago, this pizzeria has been in the hands of Elmer and Christina Rodriguez for about three and a half years. Rodriquez says they make fresh dough every day and use a New York brand of cheese for authenticity. They also import tomatoes from Italy. “We use the best ingredients around, through local distributors so we can help support local business,” he says. The pizzas are cooked in stone ovens, just like it’s done back east. The pizzeria offers a variety of red and white pizza as well as garlic knots and

luxurious, energizing indulgence with a rich store of vitamins, minerals and protein that’ll make you feel like Jay Gatsby during the holidays. To the caviarphile, the lightly salted, non-fertilized sturgeon eggs or roe from Iranian and Russian producers in the Caspian Sea are nonpareil. The cream of the caviar crop comes from three species — Osetra, Sevruga and Beluga, the latter producing exquisite roe coveted for a soft texture that’s firm to the bite, with uniform pearl-size grains ranging from glossy jet black to pale grey. That accounts for Beluga’s sticker shock — $200 to $300 per ounce. Bargain basement prices for other delectable (and more eco-friendly) varieties are available if you shop around. Finely chopped red onions and hard-boiled eggs are traditional accompaniments to caviar. Be sure to use a non-metallic serving spoon such as one made from mother-of-pearl as metal imparts an unpalatable flavor to the delicate roe. An Eggnog Monologue: Upper crust Brits from the 17th century, who owned large dairy and chicken farms, whipped up concoctions of milk, eggs, spices, and a splash of brandy to warm the cockles of their hearts during dank winters. Eggnog has become a celebratory seasonal beverage around the globe with various countries adapting the recipe to suit their climates and palates. The Mexican version called rompope has a heavy-handed sprinkling of Mexican cinnamon and rum. In the Netherlands the advocaat loaded with brandy, cognac, egg yolks and vanilla bean is so thick it can be eaten with a spoon, while Japan’s tamagozake, nicknamed “sake nog,” blends a raw egg and sugar into warm sake. As eggnog typically contains raw eggs, use high-quality, cage-free, organic or pasteurized ones to decrease salmonella risks. If that doesn’t give you a dose of comfort, whip up a vegan version, or buy an organic, reputable brand. You Quack Me Up: A whole citrus glazed roasted duck with wild rice pilaf is a festive way to celebrate the holidays. A completely dark meat fowl, duck provides an excellent source of protein, vitamins and minerals, but also a high-fat content — saturated, mono- and polyunsaturated. Alas, the cholesterol-conscious should eat moderately. If you like to give your jaw a good workout, buy Mallard with flesh that’s lean yet greasy, and somewhat tough. The Muscovy has an overpowering flavor so is best used for its liver to make foie gras, (now legal after a Los Angeles judge reversed the statewide ban on the controversial food). The White Pekin, the country’s most popular breed has a rich flavor minus the gaminess, along with leaner, more succulent meat.

Holiday Chestnut Puree ■ Ingredients: • 12 ounces chestnut puree (canned) • 1/2 cup heavy cream •2 tablespoons Brandy, or pick your poison (Amaretto, Frangelico, Cognac) • 1/4 Chestnuts teaspoon almond extract • 1-tablespoon chestnut honey

COURTESY

■ Method: Combine ingredients in a food processor and blend to a smooth texture, like Spackling paste. If it’s too thick, add more cream. Chill. Serve in martini glasses. Garnish with shaved bittersweet chocolate, and a tower of whipped cream. Serves 6. (For the authentic recipe translated directly from Gerbeaud Café’s Hungarian master confectioners, visit freerangeclub.com)

From Soup to Chestnuts: This time of year Nat King Cole’s iconic tune chimes in my head, “Chestnuts roasting in an open fire,” and my mouth waters for these treats. They come whole with tough mahogany skins encapsulating creamy white soft kernels, or already peeled in decorative tins or jars. Chestnuts are as divine in savory dishes as they are in sweet ones. Due to the high starch content (but thankfully low in fat and calories) the kernels are used as spud substitutes, especially in European cuisines. Take the chill off a winter’s night with a steamy bowl of toasted chestnut almond bisque. For a riff on classic Italian try chestnut risotto or ravioli. For some seasonal sides, stuff the hollows of acorn squash with mashed chestnuts, or whip up a chestnut soufflé with a brandy drizzle. A bittersweet chocolate chestnut torte would satisfy the most discriminating sweet tooth. My personal favorite is this chestnut puree with an avalanche of whipped cream that has been savored around the world, particularly at the romantic, century-old Gerbeaud Café in Budapest, a glamorous haunt of the Habsburg royal family and Queen of Hungary, along with such celebrities as Madonna and Brad Pitt, who signed the elegant eatery’s gold-leafed guestbook when they dropped by for their fix of this blissful delicacy.

FACES OF THE FUTURE Outstanding Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Del Norte high school seniors are being honored with membership in the Fraternity of Academic and Civic Excellence (FACE), sponsored by the Poway News Chieftain, Rancho Bernardo News Journal and Visual Photography. These students are selected by their schools for outstanding academic and community service.

Church gives computers to 10 Poway graduates BY DEBORAH BRENNAN Ten graduating students from Abraxas High School in Poway recently received Chromebooks as gifts from the Church at Rancho Bernardo.. The donation was aimed to help students at the continuation school get off to the right start in higher education. “I was shocked, completely dumbfounded,” said student Gillian Horn. “I had no idea what was going on. And super thankful. I thought it was a really awesome gesture.” It’s the third time the church has provided Chromebooks to some of the school’s graduating students, and one of many times it has helped the school, said Principal Dave MacLeod. “Last year they came up with the idea to help kids ... going to college or a trade school,” he said. The Chromebooks were “a surprise for the students,” he added. Teachers and church officials pick 10 of the roughly 30 graduates as recipients, choosing those who have shown the most initiative and made the most progress. Many of the students don’t have computers at home, so the laptops provide a crucial link to online information. Students enter the continuation school after falling behind for various reasons at conventional schools, MacLeod said. Some may have

Graduating students from Abraxas High School with their donated computers. disciplinary problems, but others face hunger, homelessness, family responsibilities or social issues at school. Horn said she was sidetracked by social pressures as a freshman, and failed classes during her first year at Poway High School. After trying an online school, she came to Abraxas, where she hit her stride and learned to

tune out negative influences. “The teachers took me under their wings,” she said. “I started hauling and doing as much as I could (and) I realized that the things around me didn’t matter. I put in a lot of effort.” She knew she had turned around academically, but was not expecting the gift of the Chromebook last week. She

said it will help her stay up to speed as she enters community college and then applies to transfer to Humboldt State University to study wildlife biology. “That was super cool,” she said. “I’m excited to start the next chapter of my life.” Brennan writes for the San Diego Union-Tribune.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 280-2832 or visit this Internet Web site www.auction.com, using the file number assigned to this case 16-44217. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. Ask Mr. Marketing BY ROB WEINBERG

Working for your breakfast

O

ver the past 10 years I’ve been asked regularly “How do you come up with material for new columns every week?” The answer’s simple; I pay attention and believe everything’s about marketing if observed the right way. Cynical? Perhaps. Yet consider these everyday experiences through a marketing filter: · The child wanting a raise in his allowance complains his buying power has deteriorated. · The teenager pleading to pierce her ears needs to demonstrate she’s an adult. · The single looking for a date Saturday night showers, dresses a little nicer and smiles a bit more. Think about it; you meet someone new and his shoes are worn and his hair

unkempt. Then remember what my mom says; everyone wants to be associated with a winner. Perhaps without realizing it we’re all observing and judging each other to see if we want to be associated with the other. And we’re packaging ourselves appropriately for our universe, hoping our audience will “buy” us and our message. Call it what you will, but this all boils down to the realization that marketing ourselves isn’t just for job interviews anymore. We’re all “selling” ourselves every day. Therefore, with an open eye I observe the marketing successes and failures that surround us everywhere. Hotel rooms that smell funny. Road signs with

peculiar names. Speakers who do (or don’t) present themselves well. I’ve realized the list is truly endless if you keep your eyes open and appreciate what you’re experiencing. That’s why I’m going to make you this offer. Keep your eyes open during the next seven days and observe every marketing situation in your immediate world. Pay attention to people, names, signs, clothing … everything. Try to understand the message being sent, the audience being addressed, and why the effort is (or isn’t) successful. Send the most interesting story to me at freeeats@askmrmarketing.com. And yes, I’ll select the best one and buy you breakfast. No, it won’t be anything fancy. I’m thinking Hamburger Factory or SidNY’s. However, I can guarantee you we’ll have a few laughs and all your friends will be envious. Well, maybe not. Regardless, you’ll learn something about how to market yourself and your business. And that is worth way more than the price of a plate of scrambled eggs. With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Hear more stories about marketing and life at www.askmrmarketing.com.

Marilyn Hanes with the Rancho Bernardo office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage helped raise $125,000 for Parkinson’s research by hiking Machu Picchu in Peru.

Realtor part of fundraising hike in Peru Marilyn Hanes, a sales associate affiliated with the Rancho Bernardo office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, and a group of 28 Parkinson’s patients and their spouses, medical professionals and other trekkers interested in raising funds for research, recently raised $125,000 for Parkinson’s research by hiking Machu Picchu in Peru. Funds will support the first FDAapproved patient-specific stem cell therapy for Parkinson's disease from the Summit for Stem Cell of the Scripps Research Institute. Hanes and the group hiked to the summit of Salkantay Pass to an altitude of 15,200 feet and over 26.2

miles into Machu Picchu. “We had an inspirational and fun group, including nine Parkinson’s patients, medical professionals, volunteers, friends and family,” said Hanes. “We also had three guides and support staff, horses and donkeys leading us to the summit of Salkantay Pass.” The group walked through the cold, rainy, long mountainous terrain and arrived safely at the peak. Throughout the hike, the group slept in tents. “It was truly an experience of a lifetime visiting Peruvian villages and meeting the welcoming locals,” added Hanes. “The Sacred Valley is a beautiful, historical area of terraced farming with

the small village of Pisac tucked away in the Andes. Cuzco is a charming city where we acclimated at 11,000 feet and then traveled to the trailhead for our four-day, 26.2-mile trek ending in Aguas Calientes and then the Vista Dome Train and shuttle back to Cuzco. Machu Picchu is an amazing wonder of the world, and I experienced first-hand climbing to the top of Waynapicchu.” Included in the group was Sherrie Gould, executive director of Summit for Stem Cell of the Scripps Research Institute, which is working to help cure Parkinson's around the world and will commence its FDA approved first trial in the spring of 2018.

Former Padres and Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp listed his overhauled estate in Poway for sale at $11.5 million.

ANTIS REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHY

Former Padres star Matt Kemp asking $11.5 million for Poway mansion BY NEAL J. LEITEREG After being traded by the Padres to the Braves last season, Matt Kemp is ready to make a trade of his own. The professional ballplayer has listed his mansion estate in Poway’s Heritage community for sale at $11.5 million. Kemp bought the property three years ago for $9.075 million and has spent another $3 million in renovations,

according to Kofi Nartey of Compass, who shares the listing with Morgan Trent of Paramount Properties. Features of the 15,884-square-foot home include custom travertine floors, a cigar lounge with a humidor and a 1,200-bottle wine cellar with a separate tasting room. The custom home theater has tiered seating and a snack bar. Two walk-in closets, two showers and a

secondary laundry room are highlights of the master suite. There are five bedrooms, five bathrooms and two powder rooms in all. Outdoors, manicured grounds include an infinity-edge swimming pool, a tennis court and an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven. A separate pool house is currently used as a gym and Roman spa. The 32-year-old Kemp began his career

with the Dodgers and spent his first nine seasons with the team, making two all-star teams. The outfielder hit .268 with 35 home runs and 108 RBIs in 156 games for the Padres and Braves last season. Leiterag writes for California News Group, publisher of the Union-Tribune and Los Angeles Times
