Montevideo, URUGUAY Oliva Hotel Montevideo - a modern city with European flair. See the Old City with its famous Mercado del Puerto, Constitution Square, Cathedral and Colonial Town Hall. Walk through Independence Square, with its monument dedicated to national hero, José Gervasio Artigas and his Mausoleum. Facing the square is the Government House (museum of the Presidents). See the huge Congress Building, the pride of Uruguay. It was constructed between 1908 and 1925 with local marble consisting of 52 colors and 12 types of wood. Drive past the Prado neighborhood, with a park that features the famous sculpture La Diligencia (The Stage Coach), a Monument to the last indigenous people the Charruas, and the Rose Garden. Continue to Batlle & Ordoñez Park, passing by the Obelisk, La Carreta (Covered Wagon) monument, the Soccer Stadium and the residential area of Carrasco. Stop at Plaza Virgilio with the monument dedicated to the Fallen Soldiers of the Navy and enjoy an excellent view of the city. Just north of Montevideo visit one of the leading wineries of the country, Juanico.. The first vineyards in the region were planted in 1835. Today, the best classic varieties are grown including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Upon arrival, enjoy a tour of the vineyards, the facilities equipped with state-of- the-art processing machinery, and the wine cellar built in 1840. Punta del Este & Depart Home Punta del Este Resort & Spa Drive through the beautiful countryside of Uruguay as you travel from Montevideo to Punta del Este, located 85 miles away. Punta del Este is called the St. Tropez of Uruguay for its miles of beautiful, pristine beaches, its upscale and exclusive resort tradition, and glittery nightlife. Enroute, stop at Portezuelo and Punta Ballena for sweeping views up and down the coast (great spots for photographers), and at Casapueblo, the home and atelier of the famous artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. Explore this dazzling white complex of Spanish-Moroccan architecture, situated on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean. Vilaró built it in 1958 with his own hands, using only traditional tools. Narrow steps lead to a maze of rooms scattered on different levels and filled with the artist’s works. Sightseeing tour of the city include the residential areas with their elegant homes of the most sophisticated architecture such as San Rafael, Cantegril, Parque Golf and Beverly Hills. Visit Fundación Ralli, a private museum of Contemporary Latin American Art houses an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings, including works by Salvador Dali. Next tour through La Barra and its unique undulating bridges. Continue along the wide sandy beaches such as San Rafael, El Emir, Playa Brava and the famous hand sculpture by Mario Irarrazabal.
