Thank You For Being My Wife by John McClane

When was the last time you expressed gratitude for your spouse? And I don’t just mean thanking them for making dinner or putting the kids to bed. I am talking truly thanking your wife for being your wife or genuinely thanking your husband for being married to you. If you can’t remember then you are missing out on one of the most powerful tools in the arsenal of a strong marriage. Years ago I was introduced to the following idea: Thoughts become words. Words become actions. Actions become character. Character becomes destiny. When I first heard of this concept it struck me as a gross oversimplification, but as the years have gone by I can see its relevance in almost everything I do. Especially in my relationship with my wife. We have been married for three years, but together for eight. Throughout that time we have experienced a lot of life’s ups and downs. We have buried loved ones, bought our first house, lost jobs, got new ones, traveled the world, and had our first child. We have also had more than our fair share of spats over everything under the sun. We have even had a Gorbachev-Reagan-esque stand-off over the toilet lid for our entire relationship. But throughout our time together we have never gone more than a day or two without stopping the other and saying “thank you for being my spouse.” Expressing my gratitude to her for being my wife has had a profound effect on my view of the relationship. I often find myself upset with my wife because her actions and my expectations don’t magically align. When I focus too much on how “terrible” it is when she doesn’t take out the trash, I then begin to vocalize my frustrations. If left unchecked for too long, I can begin to treat her poorly because I have been thinking and speaking negatively about her, even if only to myself. Thoughts become words. Words become action. It is absolutely crucial for me to tell her how grateful I am that she is my wife because it allows me to reset my focus on my appreciation of her. I have found that no matter how upset I am with her, when I say “I am really glad you are my wife,” or some variation of that sentiment, I can’t help but remember just how wonderful she is and how blessed I am to have her in my life. I have also noticed that gratitude is cumulative and infectious. The more I express my gratitude for my wife the more I appreciate her. The more I express my gratitude for my wife the more she begins to reciprocate. It is an incredibly powerful cycle. Try it tonight. Give your spouse a long embrace, pause, and tell them how fortunate you are to be married to them. P.S. Mrs. Gorbachev, leave the toilet lid up!

Love is essential to living life to its fullest. And love can mean a great many things to many people but one thing remains constant, at least in our minds – love is what drives life. Without it there is a void, an undeniable absence of feeling.

You could think of love as romantic love, love of your family and friends, love for nature and other species, love of learning, etc. Love can be a universal feeling but takes shape in many different ways.

. . .

At Lake Bride Magazine, we believe that a good love story makes the world go ‘round. But it’s not limited to THE wedding day. It’s also the awkward first conversation and first date that follows. It’s when you meet their family and it’s the first time you realize you are IN love. It’s the engagement and all of the magical memories that will last a lifetime. It’s preparing for the big day and, of course, the big day itself. But it’s also the days, years, and decades that follow. It’s the life lessons you learn together. It’s the art of compromising and of fighting and coming out stronger - together. It’s learning each other’s family dynamics and adjusting expectations. It’s about confessing your vows years later and celebrating anniversaries. It's about a love that creates life and a love that lives long after we’re gone. And it’s about everything in between.

. . .

It’s about learning to be the best version of yourself through your experiences with whomever or whatever you love. We strive to bring that inspiration to you on the pages of each issue of Lake Bride Magazine. We love to tell people’s stories. Authentic stories focused on human emotion and destiny. YOUR stories… because they serve as great reminders of the true power of love. T H E L A K E

HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT DESTINATION WEDDING

C

onsidering having a destination wedding? It’s not as daunting a task as it may seem. Here are a few helpful tips to make planning your destination wedding a breeze.

Keep it simple. ~ This is my number one piece of advice for any bride choosing to get married at a destination other than “home.” Do not overthink the planning process, or you’ll drive yourself crazy! Build in time before and after your wedding so you aren’t feeling rushed. ~ Arrive a few days early to make sure you have plenty of time to settle in and confirm any details that need to be wrapped up before the big day. ~ Stay after your wedding with your new husband or wife to bask in your newlywed status and enjoy a little minimoon vacation. Don’t fight the natural elements and culture of your destination.

Make the experience memorable for your guests who have traveled to your wedding. ~ Plan events for the whole weekend if your budget allows or at least offer suggestions to your guests on other things they can do during their downtime. Some ideas: a welcome reception or a post-wedding brunch. ~ Don’t overschedule! Your guests are probably treating this like a vacation for themselves, so be sure to give them plenty of time to do their own thing. Welcome bags are a gesture that shouldn’t be overlooked for a destination wedding. ~ Fill them with items that are destination-specific to your wedding or items that they can use during the weekend (think sunscreen for a beach wedding or a map of walking tours for a city wedding). ~ Keep in mind guests might be flying to your destination, so don’t give them things they can’t easily get through airport security with (like a pocketknife, golf club, or railroad spike all things I’ve actually seen people gift to their guests).

~ You’re traveling somewhere unique for a reason - embrace it! Remember why you selected your wedding location and work with that. Celebrate the culture and uniqueness of your destination. This can be through incorporating local cuisine, cocktails, music, flowers, traditions… you name it!

A few logistical details to consider:

Offer a variety of accommodation options at several price points.

~ Don’t forget to research marriage license requirements for your destination far in advance so you aren’t scrambling at the last minute to check those boxes.

~ Your guests will all have different budgets, so make sure to find accommodation options that cater to those different budget ranges.

~ If you’re flying to your destination, carry your wedding dress, shoes, and accessories on board with you. These are not items you can easily replace if your luggage is lost or delayed.

~Keep time zone differences in mind during the planning process and waiting for replies. ~ Make sure your passports are current - seems obvious, but this is easy to overlook with everything else you’ll be checking off of your to-do list.

Editor's Note: We know travel is complicated right now, but use these inspirational destination wedding tips to plan for better days ahead!

By: Ashley Fox Owner/Creative Director of Ashley Fox Design

During these times of having to adjust and alter your wedding plans, shift your perspective to think about your opportunities, not your restrictions. By using thoughtful details, a welcoming table, and an incredible backdrop for a floral installation, you can create beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. Here are some suggestions on how to get the biggest impact from florals in your smaller scale wedding celebration: + Use seasonal flowers to save money and get the most beautiful blooms + Ask your designer to use only 3-4 varieties in your bouquet. It will look chic and blend well within any environment you are in from a backyard wedding to city hall nuptials + Be creative with where you place your arrangements: + Beneath a mantle in a fireplace not being used for a fire + Behind a couch on a credenza + On a side table or entryway table where people are entering a space + As accents on plates or napkins + Along an outdoor pathway + Each guest is special, now more than ever. Show them how much you appreciate them by having your floral designer create small bouquets at each place setting + Consider using simple bud vases with thoughtfully selected blooms such as fritillaria, anemone, parrot tulips, and ranunculus + Make sure your floral designs are considerate of conversation height so people can talk between them and not have to put them on the floor to see one another + Place floral in key places where you will appreciate them for a long time

Destination: wedding By: The Wedding Guys

Looking to the cultural zeitgeist, one thing truly stands out as the next big influencer in weddings: DESTINATIONS. Each year as we survey the nuances of how couples are choosing to tie the knot, we see with each new season trends that coincide with the ever-evolving concept of what a wedding means for the couple, their family, and their guests. Now more than ever, we see the growing intent to create a wedding ‘experience’ and one glance at social media shows couples wanting to create buzzworthy weddings filled with unique experiences to be captured with beautiful images. The once popular rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception model is now making way for an immersive experience and many are choosing a destination to host the bevy of activities that have defined the nuptial weekend. One thing is certain, destination weddings don’t just mean a tropical location that a select number of friends and family will jet off to. Now, destination weddings encompass a range of options, from romantic backdrops in Ireland or Italy to local destinations in lake country and quaint country bed & breakfasts that can host an entire weekend of activities. Both types of destination weddings bring with them the expectation of planned events along with time to enjoy the unique opportunities in the area. And, while the foreign destination wedding was once used to reduce the guest count, couples are increasingly surprised by the number of family and friends that are choosing to attend their weddings.

14

LAKE BRIDE MAGAZINE

ISSUE 15/16

Don’t necessarily think a destination wedding is the cheap alternative it used to be. There are now more options than ever and if you want to provide a range of experiences and activities for your guests, large groups can certainly impact the budget. There is almost no limit on destinations, types of experiences, and ways to travel from cultural tourism to culinary excursions, but the one common thread is that couples are seeking new and authentic experiences. Where is the best place to celebrate your marriage and all the activities leading up to the big day? It used to be common to find an all-inclusive resort in Mexico, which is still a very popular option. But now, the sky is the limit. Right now, almost everyone is talking about cultural tourism and adventure travel, so why not incorporate this trend into your destination wedding. Instead of the traditional beach, change it up for a romantic destination like Venice, Italy. A romantic city for sure, this destination conjures up thoughts of love. Indulge guests with a private water taxi from the airport, then consider varying accommodation options by offering a selection of hotels. Want a beautiful water-inspired destination stateside? Consider New York’s Lake George. There you’ll find luxe resorts, fine dining, and stylish shops. The pristine waters and serene forests have drawn vacationers to the Adirondack Mountains for more than two centuries.

Exotic locations provide the opportunity to soak up the indigenous culture, and overwater bungalows seem to be another craze in destinations. Polynesia always comes to mind first, and couples still love the remote and exotic idea of traveling to Tahiti. The thatched huts, often outfitted with luxury amenities like infinity pools, outdoor showers, two-person Jacuzzis, and, of course, the glass-floored living room to view the tropical fish, are popping up on Pinterest boards everywhere. It used to be that you had to travel to the far-flung South Pacific to experience the ultimate in honeymoon lodging. Not anymore. Now, these luxe sea huts can be found at popular resorts like Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica, El Dorado Maroma in Riviera Maya, Mexico, and Azul Paradise in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Looking for an overwater bungalow in lake country? You may have to travel to Switerland where Hotel Palafitte provides overwater bungalows with dramatic Alps and lake views! These sleek water pavilions sit over Lake Neuchatel, a 24-mile long Swiss alpine lake rimmed with sprawling vineyards, charming medieval towns, and a marshland bird paradise. Wedding couples are seeking more authentic food experiences as well, and you can blame this current obsession on “Top Chef ” and Andrew Zimmern for expanding our palates. Culinary tourism is becoming a big new trend for foodies who want a tasting adventure. Some couples are literally planning their whole wedding around the meal. Consider Savannah, Georgia, a beautiful and tasty destination where a weekend of activities could provide a guided culinary tour for your guests. These seriously

memorable culinary experiences might include a 10-course tasting menu, a buyout of a wine bar with a well-versed sommelier, or a restaurant featuring a celebrity chef. Whatever your tastes, there is the perfect destination just waiting for you and your guests. There can be fantastic perks to a destination wedding, including some great packages and added perks for the couple based on the number of rooms booked with the property. But don’t think you will get the best pricing or the best location by shopping online. Working with a travel agent will provide you with the information you need to make the best decisions and to get the best pricing. Most have traveled and stayed in the best destinations, both domestically and abroad, so they can give you an accurate account of each of the options. If there is something that is extremely important to you like local fare, crafted cocktails, or an amazing spa, your agent can suggest a property that will provide everything you are looking for. Both local and travel destinations are amping up their offerings to create something special, not only for the couple but for the entire guest list. This is great particularly for the millennial guest looking for an adventure, as this gives them a chance to seize an experience with much of the planning taken care of. From boat trips and campfires at local lake destinations to private pools and VIP cabanas in tropical locales, your guests can experience fun adventures and exclusive amenities that they may not normally have access to. Whatever you choose, you will find your guests reminiscing over all the elements that you incorporate in your destination wedding for years to come.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST:

Soothing spas and sounds of rain, waterfalls, beach walks, and breathtaking views of the mountains and ocean. Vancouver Island (British Columbia) – Accessible by ferry, the “Island of the Spas” is home to many “must visit” places. One of those in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, is the Hotel Grand Pacific, adjacent the Legislature and Parliament Buildings and overlooking the Inner Harbour. Stunning views from the upper floors are as appreciated as the lovely walks at ground level along the harbour’s sea wall. The hotel’s Pacific Restaurant and Lounge are superb but, if you’re out exploring, the casual greatness of the Flying Otter Grill and Red Fish Blue Fish (in an up-cycled cargo container) are only a 5-minute walk away. A bit further away, 90 miles to be exact, Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort is another Vancouver Island must stay (and play) paradise featuring ocean view rooms, Canada’s #1 ranked Grotto Spa, the Endless Tapas Experience at The Treetop, 22 acres of forest, two miles of sandy beach, and the warmest ocean swimming waters in Canada. Seriously. Anchorage (Alaska) – Glamorous Camping is known as “glamping” around the world. In Canada many refer to it as “Orca Island Cabining.” That’s how dramatic and defining the experience is in Seward, at Dennis and Susan Swiderski’s Orca Island Cabins. Their stylish yurts complement some of the most naturally intimate views and settings, with comfortable beds, fully-equipped kitchens, running water, and private decks. Kayak, fish, hike, whale watch, or just sit back and relax. It’s safe to say you’ve never experienced anything like this before, and probably will want to again. Cannon Beach (Oregon) – There’s “beachfront” and then there’s “on the beach” like the New England-style Stephanie Inn, a boutique hotel in northern Oregon with subtle luxuries, carefully crafted ambience, and ocean or mountainview rooms and suites near the famous Haystack Rock. With a focus on romance and superior service, every room has a fireplace and Jacuzzi tub. They even give you lanterns for nighttime beach walks. The explosion of colors at sunset complement the explosion of flavors in Chef Bedard’s restaurant, but great as your dinner might be, the breakfasts here are even more legendary. (Example: Lemon curd-stuffed French toast with Grande Marnier strawberries and bacon.)

Courtesy of Hilton Waikoloa Village

HAWAII:

Warm welcomes and weather with wafting palm trees and sunset buffets set to serenades of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Hawaii – Locals call it Hawaii. The rest of us refer to it as “The Big Island.” Whatever you call it, you’ll also call it “Awesome!” The popular Kona Coast is as stunning as seaside strips get, and while loaded with great hotels, few pack the diverse aquatic amenities of the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The resort features a private lagoon with sea turtles, a water park, and so many pools and hot tubs there’s no need for a beach. But, don’t worry, they’ve got that too, connecting the fine dining at Kamuela Provision Company to the fabulous and friendly Lava Lava Beach Club a casual, sandy stroll away. Make reservations at the Legends of Hawaii Luau, take a Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour around the island, and/or set sail on a sunset catamaran cruise where you might catch a whale but will have a whale of a good time. Lanai – If you believe you get what you pay for, and that the more you have to work for something the more rewarding the realization of it is, you’ll be greatly compensated upon arrival at The Four Seasons Lanai. It takes a bit of aerial island hopping to get there, or a boat from Maui, but the entire experience is literally everything you would ever dream or want a Hawaiian vacation to be. Beachfront with waterfall pools and a spa, a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, sandy expanses as far as the eye can see, crystal-clear water, waves, palm trees, and food at Nobu Lanai that… well… transcends the word “food.” Book an ocean-view suite and prepare yourself for this reality—“Of anywhere I’ve been in the United States, this is the place I most want to return.”

Grand Wailea Maui Courtesy of Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts

Maui – Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux is consistently considered the island’s most romantic hotel—an all-suite, adults-only resort with incredible ocean views throughout the entire 15-acre property. The intimate 5-star enclave has only 72 rooms, making crowds a non-factor and guaranteeing serenity with tropical gardens, waterfalls, and perfect panoramic views. Go the extra romantic mile with a 7-course private dinner at The Treehouse, under a canopy of mangos and avocados, for an extra-unforgettable night. Many who hope to elope consider the Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort 1.5 miles up the beach with a private chapel down by the water, bridges, pools, and waterfalls all over, and infinite ocean-view rooms on a more modest budget. Whatever brings you to the Grand Wailea, do not leave there without at least one sunset dinner at Humuhumunukunukuapua’a—a fine-dining hot spot with Polynesian thatched roofs and killer desserts. And if you venture off property, there’s always a great vibe and menu at Nalu’s South Shore Grill.

CARIBBEAN & MEXICO:

Easy international escapes to tropical paradises with all-inclusive, adults-only, and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. The Bahamas – The Abaco Club on Winding Bay is a plush, private resort with an assortment of lodges perched on cliffs around a crystal-clear cove, allowing nonmember guests to visit just once (knowing full well you’ll pay most anything to come back). With an award-winning golf course, spa, and restaurant, a couldn’t-be-friendlier staff, a spectacular beach and so many surrounding islands to hop around on, there are few places on earth you’ll feel more pampered and at peace.

Puerto Rico – El Conquistador is a Waldorf Astoria Resort overlooking Las Croabas and the British Virgin Islands an hour east of San Juan. With a variety of dining options, infinite infinity pools, a water park, spa, Arthur Hills golf course, a unique funicular down to the marina, and even its own private island where part of “Pirates of the Caribbean” was filmed, it’s worth splurging on an ocean view room and taking a nighttime kayak excursion to the Bioluminescent Bay in Fajardo. (Note: Major expansion underway. Check renovations status before booking.) Cancun – A favorite getaway for elopers and honeymooners alike, the all-inclusive Hard Rock Riviera Maya is a unique property for Mexico, as private and secure as a public resort gets, with a lovely waterfront chapel for destination weddings, clean beach coves, tons of pools, an adults-only side, and a separate family section with an incredible new water park. The food variety and quality are major highlights here, and lucky couples score with a limited, swanky, ocean-view, Jacuzzi-rooftop suite. (Note: This is Stays + Plays Travel Agency’s most booked global resort for both couples and families.)

Catering to masses of ski-lovers in winter and messes of golf-lovers in summer, with tons more courses in nearby Canmore and Kananaskis, expect Banff to blow you away… Every. Single. Day. Lake Louise – Only 39 miles north of the Fairmont Banff Springs, straight up the stunning Trans-Canada Highway 1, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is otherworldly in its own right, surrounded by mountains, the Victoria Glacier, and an almost indescribable emerald lake. Another paradise for the outdoor enthusiast, boaters motor about fishing, rafting, and kayaking, while hikers climb and photographers of all skill levels wear out their fingers. The kind of place even superlatives can’t scratch the surface of. Jasper – Speaking of superlatives, another 150 miles north of Lake Louise, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is less “castle” and more “cabin,” but Luxurious Signature Cabins at that. The 700-acre, year-round resort is tucked into Jasper National Park and encircled by magnificent mountain peaks, hugging the pristine shoreline of Lac Beauvert. With another epic Stanley Thompson golf course, the Fairmont Spa, and outdoor activities galore, you’d be hard pressed to find a more perfectly serene and remote getaway location. As an added bonus, the Fairmont JPL is only 28 miles from the knock-your-socks-off beauty of Maligne Lake, home to Reader’s Digest’s “Best Boat Cruise in Canada.” Fairmont is so dominant in Canada’s luxury resort department it’s almost… well… unfair.

MAINLAND USA:

Fly or drive to the coast with the most allure to you, seeking tree-lined cliffs, skyline views, wining, fine dining, and/or lighthouse overnighting. Big Sur (California) – If you’ve ever wanted to own a 39-room house on a cliff that’s great. Same here. You can’t own The Post Ranch Inn but you can pretend you do for a few days, and what memorable days those will be. Every reservation includes a daily gourmet breakfast at Sierra Mar and the resort features two heated infinity spas, a heated swimming pool, and Pacific views so pretty you just might cry (especially at sunset). For a completely different but equally memorable, and more budget-friendly, cliff-side experience, Treebones is a premier glamping resort 35 miles south of the Post Ranch Inn, with plush yurts providing full and partial Pacific vistas, Adirondack patios, a Sushi Bar, and the stellar “redefined campfire cuisine” of Wild Coast Restaurant.

Boothbay Harbor (Maine) – Honeymoon with the stars, across the map, in the far northeast, where loving lobster is essentially law, at The Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse. Exactly as it sounds, a historic, renovated lighthouse you can sleep in, this award-winning, luxury bed and breakfast is on a small Atlantic island, accessible only by boat, with just two rooms—essentially your own private island for your stay. Imagine the brilliance of the stars from out there, wrapped up together by the fire, with no one around to bother you. How much more “once-in-a-lifetime” can it get? #notmuch Don’t want to stay on an island? Okay. That isn’t really considered “your loss” at The Topside Inn, only six miles away. Truly one of the more remarkable and awarded lodging experiences in all of America, “The Inn on the Hill” is a seasonal stay (May – October) perched on four beautiful acres high over the Atlantic, with stunning views in every direction from sunrise to sunset of islands, lighthouses, and even the line out the door at Red’s Eats in Wiscasset (almost).

Big Cedar Lodge Resort

New York City (New York) – The 300-square mile city area is home to 8.5 million people and, as a result, is the most densely populated metropolis in America. With so much to do you can’t do it all, my “High Five” would be a Broadway show, a walk around Central Park, visits to the Statue of Liberty, and One World Observatory - The 9/11 Memorial, and—as the pinnacle experience—a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge to share a Grimaldi’s pizza in the park near the famous Jane’s Carousel, while watching the sun set behind the Manhattan skyline. That experience can best be set up with a stay at the luxurious 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge at Pier 1, overlooking the East River, a few hundred yards from the bridge, with a bar and plunge pool at Harriet’s Rooftop & Lounge and the sensational Bamford Haybarn Spa to boot. For those intent on proposing, I propose you intentionally schedule a dinner date at The River Café under the Brooklyn Bridge to properly pair your “wow” and “yes” moments.

Branson (Missouri) – The Midwest is perhaps a bit underrepresented on this

list. Mackinac Island and Kohler certainly merit consideration for their incredible romantic values. But Branson has something neither of those great places has, something none of the places on this list can claim—THE most picturesque non-coastal wedding chapel in America. Situated at Top of the Rock, a peak 10 miles south of Branson, and amenity of Johnny Morris’ fabulous Big Cedar Lodge Resort, the threestory Chapel of the Ozarks features jaw-to-floor views out its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Table Rock Lake. Big Cedar Lodge is actually home to three wedding chapels, bills itself as “America’s Premier Wedding Resort,” and doesn’t do bad for itself in any other category with five world-class golf courses (when Tiger Woods debuts his course next year), waterfalls, wooden bridges, award-winning restaurants, the Cedar Creek Spa, Fun Mountain, and the “must tour” 10,000-acre Dogwood Canyon Nature Park.

The only thing better than falling in love is having someone fall in love with you, and the only thing better than falling in love with a place you visit is having the one you love there to share the place with you. Whether you plan to wed, have just been married, or hope to rejuvenate your marriage in a memorable way, pick a paradise off this list, pack your bags, and pursue it. Don’t delay! Book it today!

Destination: Adventure by Kelly Kabotoff

Be prepared. It’s good advice, in marriage and in life (it is the motto of the Boy Scouts after all!). The idea is that you are always in a state of readiness, in mind and body. While I (obviously) was not a Boy Scout, I do strive to be ready for what life throws at me in any scenario. You’ve just spent months preparing for the big ‘I do’s,’ now let’s get you prepared for your next big thing... the honeymoon. While relaxation is absolutely needed and deserved, we believe adventure should be a big part of that first trip as husband and wife and having smart gear on hand is half the battle. Ready, set, be prepared…

Nanoloft Puffy Blanket - Rumpl - $149.00 My top pick for staying cozy, this blanket is super light and easy to clip onto my backpack (or around my shoulders) during an outdoor adventure. Admittedly I can also be found snuggling up with it while reading a book by the fire... or on the airplane.

High Sierra Shirts / High Water Shirt - California Cowboy starting at $135.00 These shirts take being prepared to a whole new level. If your adventure is bringing you to colder temps, the High Sierra is your answer. This après ski flannel shirt has a cozy thermal lining. Headed to warmer waters? The High Water shirt has short sleeves, tropical prints, and a waterabsorbent, terry-cloth lining. The best part - both styles feature a beer pocket, zippered dry pocket, and sunglasses loop. Oh... and you get a bottle opener and koozie with your shirt. Cheers to that!

Radium Sunglasses - Zeal Optics - $149.00 While I love when the sun helps to charge my gear and warm my back, I hate getting caught in the glare unprepared. Zeal Optics sunglasses are my favorite pick. They are super light and durable, and they are made from plants so they’re a conscious choice too. Did I mention fashionable?

The Seventy2 Survival System - Unchartered Supply Company - $349.99 While we don’t want disasters on the mind in times of celebration, it’s still a realistic part of always being prepared. Enter the world's first fully integrated 72-hour survival system. Designed to guide you safely through any unexpected emergency, the Seventy2 has everything you need to turn a potential disaster into a minor inconvenience. Keep it in your trunk, or bring it on your next adventure, and ensure that you are prepared for anything.

Nomad 5 Solar Panel Kit - Goal Zero - $79.95 There is no denying that we rely on our electronics, even when we are out in nature. Solar power is the answer and the Nomad Kit has everything you need to charge your iPhone so you can stay connected and get that perfect picture.

No. 6 Knife - Opinel - $16.00 I’m not sure if he was a Boy Scout, but my grandpa always had a knife in his pocket, and it often came in very handy. This one is the smallest model from Opinel and features the Virobloc safety ring. It easily fits in a pocket or bag and always delivers when needed. I also love that it comes in colors and patterns that give it a unique, even fashionable, spin.

llison and Dar’s love story backs up the old adage of “when you know, you just know.”

Allison: “I will never forget the first time I saw Dar walking through the hallway of Eastview High School on his way to basketball practice. We had a mutual friend that introduced me to Dar and we instantly connected.” Dar: “The first time I hung out with Allison, she was actually on a “date” with my best friend. It was in high school so they both brought a friend to the hangout in order to make things less awkward. Of course the whole time I had to pretend that I didn’t have a HUGE crush on her. Fortunately for me, they didn’t work out, and I was finally able to make my move. We quickly realized how compatible we were and from that point forward we were inseparable.” These high school sweethearts took the sometimes bumpy road of the long distance relationship when they both went off to college. But rather than let the distance and bumps derail them, they came out on the other side stronger together and more in love than ever. Dar: “Even though it consisted of many lonely flights, spontaneous vacations, and numerous speed bumps, our relationship ended up stronger because of it. We were able to help each other grow as people and molded one another into the best versions of ourselves. At this point, it wasn’t a matter of if we were getting married, but when.” Dar proposed in a beautiful park overlooking the skyline of their new home city, Chicago, and they’re planning their dream wedding for June back home in Minneapolis.

riends first is how we started. Our chemistry was there, but the timing almost wasn’t. I was heading off to college and he was still in high school. Thankfully, Colin is the most stubborn person I know, second only to myself. It was his persistence and determination that showed me the spark we shared was actually a flame. High school sweethearts. Long distance lovers. Best friends along the way. Six years later that flame is still burning stronger than ever with a love that is like no other… In a small town, in the middle of nowhere, sometimes you have to make your own fun. For years we have been packing our picnic basket, loading up the truck with candles and blankets, and making the short trip to “the pond” - a simple and secluded pond on property owned as part of his family farm. Amongst the rows of corn and dirt roads, in the middle of ordinary, we started a tradition. Late nights, listening to the bullfrogs, a charcuterie platter – it was our little secret. Our happy place. Our bliss. Reasons for picnics at the pond have changed over the years. From soaking in the last days of summer before heading back to separate colleges, to celebrating the purchase of our first home together. Colin always knew this was the place. This was our place. This was where he would ask me to be his wife. On Thursday, May 14, 2019 Colin called me and asked if we could have a picnic that night. The weekend looked like rain and he wanted to spend some quality time together. Asking to go to the pond wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. Picnics are our love language and way of reconnecting and spending quality time together. He asked me to stop at the store and pick up supplies to make a charcuterie board and a bottle of wine. When he got home, I was napping on the couch. It had been a long day and to be honest I really wasn’t feeling a picnic. He was so excited so I went with it. We arrived at the pond, set up in our favorite spot, and had our Spotify playlist going as we dove into the olives. As the sun was setting, Colin asked to go for a walk. He seemed nervous, and I started connecting the dots as my butterflies were creeping in too. We walked to higher ground to have the clearest view of the breathtaking sunset. Together we leaned in for a kiss and that’s when he dropped down to one knee! I always knew that it would happen. I knew for six years that he was my forever. I just didn’t know the details, nor did I want to! After lots of tears and kisses, the questions were flowing, ‘When did you even go shopping? How did I not know? Where did you hide it? Did you ask my dad?’ He got me in the best way possible! We were on cloud nine. On the ride back, we kept giggling and smiling and saying over and over, ‘Isn’t it crazy?! We are the only two who know we are engaged right now!’ We will hold tight to that feeling forever. Later we told family and friends of our engagement, and they knew it happened at the pond without us even saying. But after all this time, it’s never really been about the picnic, or about the pond. It’s been about picking each other over and over, intentionally expressing our love in an extraordinary way. Now we get to for the rest of our lives.

You get to capture moments of you and your fiancé in your element without any potential stressors of the actual wedding day. Whether it be at home, at your favorite date night spot, or while doing something you both love, your engagement session will give you time to get comfortable together in front of a camera while also giving you images that will always remind you of that short but sweet season of your relationship.

ENGAGEMENT DESTINATIONS

Being the adventure-lovers that we are, our current favorite wedding trend is destination engagement sessions. We don’t need an excuse to get out in the world and see a new city or revisit an old favorite but if you get to do that and check a box on your to-do list, why not?!

hen Eric moved to Ely in June of 2017, he found himself frequenting Northern Grounds, a Coffee + Wine Bar owned and operated by Cindy (Beans at the time). It wasn’t until the spring of 2018 that they formally met and Eric admitted he thought she made up her last name for the coffee shop. She didn’t. They drank old fashioneds and had their first date on Lake Vermilion that following weekend. By the end of the summer, Eric had introduced her to his family back in Massachusetts and they were making plans to move in together. They, clearly in love, were engaged on November 2, 2019, in the footprint of their future home on Jasper Lake, adjacent to Cindy’s childhood home and unknowingly at the time, the location of their wedding less than a year away. Originally, Eric & Cindy intended to be married in 2021 as Eric’s brother & his fiancé had a date set in 2020. Then Covid threw a curveball. Celebrating the spontaneity of it all, Eric & Cindy decided to move their wedding up, giving them exactly 100 days to plan it all. Thankfully, Northern Grounds had hosted an event or two and Cindy knew that her staff, family and friends would ecstatically rise to the challenge. Realizing that Covid could likely impact their day as well and not wanting to cancel as so many others have had to do, they committed to keeping it intimate. When the Minnesota mask mandate was implemented, they moved the wedding outside to the shores of Jasper Lake. It was a true backyard wedding at Cindy’s childhood home. Immediate family and a few local friends came to celebrate what matters most, that Eric and Cindy found their favorite person in their favorite place, Ely, Minnesota.

love story

M

adison, Wisconsin will always feel like home to us”, says Tayne, “as this is where our story began as members of the UW Spirit Squad. Poms in my hands and Bucky’s furry gloves on his, we danced through rain and sleet to cheer on our Badgers. Jake seemed confident that yelling ‘Enter - TAYNE - ment!’ across the gym in the middle of dance team practice was the way to my heart. In actuality, Jake was the first guy to buy me flowers and, after seeing his dance moves, I was smitten. We had an unexpected connection that felt easy, fun, and too good to be true.” From Jake: “The beginning of our love story filled with awkwardly romantic and humorous moments began on a bus filled with dancers, cheerleaders, and mascots from Madison on its way to Spirit Camp in Milwaukee. We were introduced to each other as a new dancer and mascot, but the wild antics on the bus certainly kept the moment from being a ‘love at first sight’ event. It wasn’t until halfway through our junior year where our friendship tumbled into a relationship; however, the first month of dating is still a hotly debated topic between us. I still argue our first date was a classy formal where we dressed up and drove a limo to a nice dinner, and our first kiss was on a beautifully lit porch under a starry sky. Tayne is quick to remind me that our first date was technically the week before at a Chinese restaurant located underground that served chow mein on styrofoam plates, and our first kiss was eight feet from a dumpster. The details surrounding the start of our relationship might be debatable, but it’s undeniable that the tradition of awkwardly romantic and humorous moments continued through our third date. “Our joy for each other continued to build as we closed out college and steered through the challenges of joining the real world. During this period, Tayne and I tackled a three-year long-distance relationship that weathered two master’s programs, the beginning of our first jobs, and

a brief section of time where Tayne decided to shave half her head. Significant growth took place during this time in our relationship, and I know I wouldn’t have been nearly as successful embracing those challenges without Tayne’s support.” From Tayne: “In 2015, Jake was offered a position on the West Coast, and the ocean called him. Because we could no longer imagine a future without each other, on New Year’s Day of 2016, I started my journey to California to be with Jake in a town called Tracy, about an hour* outside of San Francisco (*without traffic). Jake was kicking butt at work for sixteen hours of the day, and I found a dream job in Napa, and so began our not-so-glamorous hustle of young professional life and commuting. We fell in love with weekend road trips, hiking, and exploring the West Coast - eating so much sushi, trying out acroyoga, and getting out to the ocean and up into the mountains whenever possible. The crisp, fresh air was revitalizing and a great distraction from the growing pains of adulthood.” From Jake: “After the excitement of college, the personal growth of dating long distance, and the joy of our time in California, it was time to plan my proposal. “The plan to propose on a forested beach next to Lake Tahoe at the end of an acroyoga sequence encountered several obstacles. For starters, we received a recommendation to check out the beautiful “Secret Cove” beach on the coast of Lake Tahoe. It wasn’t until after an hour long hike,

52

LAKE BRIDE MAGAZINE

love story visualization of the biggest moment of our lives, that we arrived to the “Secret Cove,” only to realize that the pristine picturesque setting I was imagining was in fact a nude beach. Horrified, I spent the rest of the afternoon unsuccessfully scouting potential locations before retiring the plan in order to avoid sparking further suspicion from Tayne. “The next day I felt the pressure of the clock as we began walking the docks of Lake Tahoe. It was here I realized I had to propose and also where I ran into the next obstacle. I now had to convince Tayne to film an agroyoga sequence at 10am on a Sunday morning without any reason why. The best excuse I could come up with was, ‘It’d be cool for Instagram?’ Apparently this was enough to convince Tayne to spend the next hour to get a perfectly framed flow with no mistakes. On the last take, I felt my heart beating in my chest and saw stars in my vision as I could barely focus on each move in the sequence. Time slowed when the last transition positioned me in the shape of a chair, Tayne standing on my knees, her right hand in my left, while she leaned back with her trailing hand touching the incredibly blue Tahoe sky. I stealthily slipped the ring out of my pocket before sliding my right knee back to finish in the classic engagement pose. Tayne hopped from my knee to the dock, saw the ring, and snapped her hands to her mouth with a look of shock. My adrenaline was pumping and any romantic speech I had prepared zoomed from my memory. The words that shakily escaped were, ‘What a great weekend! Tayne, will you marry me?’ A ‘yes’ followed, punctuated by excitement, joy, and minor disbelief.” From Tayne: “He was so excited to tell me all about the process up to that point, that he knocked his car keys in the freezing cold lake. Probably running on adrenaline, he dove down to the bottom of the lake to try to retrieve them. Though he was unsuccessful, the story is hilarious and so ‘us.’ The rest of the day was a fairytale. We hiked in beautiful Squaw Valley, all the way up to 8,090 feet before making our way back to reality…though everything now, seemed a bit more… sparkly.”

From Jake: “We thrived off the magic of our engagement weekend throughout our seventh year together as we added more adventures to our continued love story. Specifically, the serendipitous addition of our new cat, Wolfbane, and the hectic experience of planning a wedding were added to the list. Novels could be written about the smiles these stories provided us, but ending that year with our wedding will always be the most memorable story to tell. “On August 31st, 2019, Tayne and I were married in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in a ceremony and reception that were impossibly perfect and can only properly be experienced through the photos and videos from that day. The entire celebration blurred through pictures with the wedding party, an intensely intimate Catholic ceremony surrounded by family, a rooftop reception to revel with friends, a six minute choreographed dance showcasing the talents of the Bergmanns and the Murphys - the dance floor led by UW-Madison’s mascot, Bucky, and a complete love-themed dance medley starring Tayne and four other high powered female dancers, all while being surrounded by the most gorgeous handmade wedding decorations I had ever seen. The experience was an incredible addition to our

story, but the most important detail of the day was what it meant to us. “Our wedding was the culmination of numerous beautifully-aligned moments, supported by all the incredible people in our lives. Surrounded by friends and family, Tayne and I were able to celebrate the journey that the previous seven years had taken us on, and promise each other that we’d continue to create countless more memories centered in love and humor. For me, our wedding was a remarkable reminder of the adventures we’ve accomplished since that first bus ride to Milwaukee, and an incredible indication of the amazing stories we still have left to write.”

atrick and I met on a dating website,” says Meredith. “We had been chatting back and forth and joking around with each other, so we decided to meet. We scheduled a quick coffee date and we ended up hitting it off! The coffee was gone long before our conversation ended (which is saying something because Patrick will now tell you how slow of a coffee drinker I am). Every time we hung out our connection seemed to strengthen. We began spending every free moment we had with each other. Cooking together, laughing at our favorite old TV shows, and bonding over good beer. “It didn’t take long for us to fall in love. Our sense of humor just clicked! Spending time together was easy. I showed Patrick my favorite outdoor activities like camping and walking through my family’s tree farm, and he showed me his favorite things like biking and disc golf. Our hobbies and our lives melded together and after a year and a half of dating we decided to move in together. Our first apartment ended up playing a large part in our love story. We filled it with furniture that we had thrifted or made together, paintings I’d done of experiences we’d shared, and trinkets from trips we had taken. One year after moving in together I came home to find Patrick down on one knee. Eyes brimming with tears I said, ‘Yes!’ I loved getting engaged in our space. We were able to celebrate just the two of us, call our families and friends, and snap a bunch of pictures. Being present and excited together in that moment was everything.

After soaking it all in, we went out to dinner and told our friends to meet us out at Bauhaus Brewery. It was such a magical night. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. “Our wedding day was all about being us. We chose to get married at a camp because we both loved spending time in the woods and getting married under the canopy of the fall leaves was the most ideal wedding day we could imagine. We chose Tanadoona because it had a beautiful outdoor space for our ceremony as well as indoor space should the weather not hold steady or people simply want to warm up. We loved that it was on a lake and that we were able to have a bonfire. The atmosphere of the camp made us feel like we could celebrate the way we wanted. One of the best parts of all was that because we had rented the camp for the weekend, we didn’t have to shut down the place until we were ENTIRELY danced out.” Meredith and Patrick spent a lot of time creating hand-made and heartfelt elements to make their wedding day their own - from the wreath they got married in front of, to the customized pennant flags, and the camp mugs they gave as favors to their guests. “My mom and I made the wreath, and my dad made the gold stand it sat on. We used vines, cutting them off my brother’s fence and wiring them around large stakes we placed in the yard to create a large circle. It was a family project which made getting married in front of it even more special!

The pennant flags were an early vision I had. I hand lettered the stencils for the flags’ sayings and meticulously cut out hundreds of tiny letters while my mom sewed them together. I remember seeing my guests for the first time at our ceremony holding the flags and waving them at us, and it brought a huge smile to my face. I also designed a camp crest logo for our wedding and had it printed on the camp mugs. I still to this day get pictures of our guests enjoying their mugs and remembering our day.”

met Emily when she was a summer associate for the law firm I worked at (scandalous!),” says Wesley. “Since she came from a very prestigious law school, I assumed she would be all business, no fun. I was half wrong! We hit it off almost immediately and things progressed quickly from there. “I knew we were meant to be together - our time together immediately felt like home to me. We were pretty much inseparable from the moment we met, which made things a bit difficult when Emily went back to Chicago for her last year of law school! I definitely became a regular Southwest Airlines customer then, flying back and forth to visit, spending time together, and planing our lives together.” From Emily: “Wes and I met at work in 2016, and we were smitten at nearly first sight (I complimented his shirt; he didn’t put his blazer back on the rest of the night). We flirted for a few months before making it official right before I moved back to Chicago for my last year of law school. Despite the distance, we knew it was serious very quickly, and we got engaged on Christmas (my favorite holiday) that year – sitting in front of the Christmas tree in our ugly Christmas sweaters.” The quick progression of their relationship didn’t make Emily think twice. “I knew Wes was the real deal because I never felt like I had to pretend to be anything different or less than myself around him. I always could meet him on the same level and on the same terms. Being with him makes me feel more like myself – stronger in what I know, more confident in who I am and what I can do, and more passionate about the things I love. I couldn’t think of a better partner.” From Wesley: “Things slowed down a bit after that, relatively speaking - we didn’t get married until September 2019. In the

meantime, we moved in together, adopted another dog, bought a house, got a bigger car, and just about everything else! Our wedding was really just the icing on the cake.” Their wedding was focused on connection, love, joy, and celebration. The ceremony was officiated by one of Emily’s best friends, and one of the first people they told about their relationship when they started dating. And they tied in an element of their early dating history to bring it all full circle. “For the first few months we dated, all of our dates were at breweries since we’re both huge fans of local beer. Getting married above Indeed Brewing, with our favorite fall beer (Yamma Jamma) served, and with growlers as centerpieces was a way for us to tie this fun part of our story into our wedding,” says Emily and Wesley. Since their wedding, they’ve discovered what every new husband and wife hope to learn: the secret to making a marriage work. “The secret to marriage is a double vanity in the bathroom: you both have your own space, take care of yourself individually, and function on your own terms, but you’re facing the same direction as your partner, looking at yourselves and each other in the same mirror, and sneaking smiles at the cutie next to you often.” But in all seriousness: “Your relationship doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s relationship – your timeline doesn’t have to be anyone else’s timeline, and your priorities don’t need to be the same as other people’s. Do what works for you, your partner, and your relationship.” Other: Gina Zeidler, Apple Blossom Flowers, Blush by Hayley Paige, BHLDN, Imagine by Vince Camuto, The Black Tux, The Tie Bar, Brilliant Earth, SIFT Gluten Free, Indeed Brewing, Minted, Jess at Pixie Salon, Renee’s Limousines, Jenna Walther

on and Cambell met as camp counselors at a summer camp in northern Wisconsin. They had a mutual friend who knew they both would be working there, so he worked some match-maker magic and told Cambell to keep an eye out for his friend Jon. She introduced herself to Jon on the first day of staff training, and the rest is history. They spent many evenings that summer sitting together on a dock on the lake getting to know one another. They quickly learned about each others’ pasts and their dreams for the future. At the end of the summer, they were headed back to their respective colleges. They wanted to see how their relationship would grow despite being hours away from each other, and decided to give it a shot. As it often can, the distance and time apart took its toll on Cambell and Jon, and they decided to end things. But they were never far from each others’ minds. In Cambell’s words: “I went on a hike with a friend from church and kept thinking, ‘It’s not Jon, and I wish it was.’ That was when I really knew Jon was the one I needed to be with. It took that time apart to realize he was the one for me, and that I wanted to make things work even if it

love story meant continuing through a long distance relationship. We dated a total of four years before getting married, and there were many hard times with being 3 1/2 hours from each other; but in the end, I truly believe it made our relationship stronger and made us appreciate each other more.” From Jon: “It was during this time of separation that I realized that there was no one else who could bring me as much joy, who could care for me as much, and who I loved more than her.” Jon popped the question on a cliff’s edge at Interstate Park in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin after a full day of planned surprises for her. And when it came to planning their wedding, they knew they wanted something that showcased their shared love for the outdoors. Their wedding was an incredibly meaningful day for them with all of their family and friends there to support them. Cambell’s stand-out memories include sharing communion with her husband, having her sister write and sing a song for them during the ceremony, and reading their own vows to each other. In Jon’s words: “Since our wedding, we have been learning what it means to selflessly love another person, to care for, encourage, challenge, and be there for another person. We are excited for many years to come in this story God is painting for us. We are grateful.”

rooke and Eric’s relationship began how many great love stories do - as a friendship. They met while working at an event venue in Michigan and became fast friends. They realized their connection was deeper when Brooke spent time abroad and kept finding herself wishing her friend was with her to experience everything that she was getting to see and do. They reconnected upon her return home, and the rest is history. When a wedding planner (Brooke) gets to plan her own wedding, you know it’s going to be a stunner. Their intimate ceremony on the beach led to cocktails, dinner, and dancing in the woods. Brooke and Eric filled their wedding day with personal touches and nods to their love story, which made for a unique and meaningful start to their married life together. From Brooke: “We chose to get married on the beach of Lake Michigan on the Leelanau Peninsula. Incorporating Lake Michigan into our wedding day was important to us because it’s where we had our first (real) date, went on camping trips together, and got engaged. It only felt fitting that we dedicated the rest of our lives together on Lake Michigan with all our favorite people.”

Another element that tied back to their story was incorporating loons into their dessert table and Eric’s boutonniere. Brooke says, “loons play a role in both our stories growing up. From Eric spending his summers at Hubbard Lake in northern Michigan listening to the loons sing at night, to me spending weekends at my grandma’s lake house where she had lots of loon décor and books. They are one of our favorite animals. “Probably the most important detail to Eric and I on our wedding day was that we wanted our guests to have an amazing experience and feel the love throughout the whole weekend – not just the day. So we decided to host a welcome beach bonfire the night before, complete with beer, wine, s’mores, and a killer sunset.” Now that they’re married, Brooke and Eric make it a priority to keep the flame alive. “Never stop dating each other! It’s really easy to get in the flow of living together and acting like roommates, so we try to make it a point to go on a weekly date, tell the other one they’re cute, and act like boyfriend and girlfriend again.” 68

ANN + ADAM 70

LAKE BRIDE MAGAZINE

ISSUE 15/16

love story

I

wish there was a super romantic story behind how Adam and I met. Unfortunately, we met the boring way – through mutual friends. I was just getting over a rough breakup with a longtime boyfriend and after meeting Adam and finding out he was interested in me, I was warned by some of my friends that he wasn’t exactly “relationship material.” We dated casually for a few months but never seemed to go a day or two without fighting. We were like oil and water – both stubborn and indecisive. As much as we wanted to make it work, I just couldn’t get past the “bad boy” reputation and my lack of trust. We called it quits and I moved out of state shortly thereafter to pursue my graduate degree. He never left my mind though. We connected a year later online. He sent me a random message on social media that prompted conversation. It just so happened that I was planning to move home, so our conversations carried on for a few months until I was settled in St. Paul, ready to begin law school, and we decided to get together in person. Out of caution, probably on both of our parts, we moved really slow (like, painfully slow as modernday romance goes). We moved in together after dating for a little more than a year and really hit our stride around the five-year mark (I’m kidding, sort of). Marriage was never a necessary thing for either of us. My relationship before Adam caused some real emotional damage and Adam’s relationship before me was, well, non-existent (he was a serial ladies’ man and never settled down with anyone). We were perfectly content living in the present moment and enjoying each other every day, without planning for the future. Why worry about where our relationship will take us years down the road when you risk missing the moments happening today? Adam worked and carried the brunt of our relationship (financially and day-to-day, cleaning the house, planning dinner, etc.) for the first three years as I worked my way through law school. When I passed the bar exam and began working full time, it was his turn to go back to school to pursue a career in nursing. The result was that we were a single-income household for the first seven years of our relationship. Things never seemed to come easy for us – we lived paycheck-to-paycheck as we balanced school and work, student loan repayment, and vet bills for the dogs we so regularly take into our home. The result was that we built an indestructible partnership. We learned to have each other’s back. I firmly believe that you can’t say with certainty that your relationship will last until you’ve been through some tough times together and come out the other side stronger and more in sync. There was plenty of opportunity early on for either one of us to walk away (with good reason, at times), but the fact that we always stayed and faced the challenges together solidified early on that this man was my partner for life.

Ten years truly flew by in a blink of an eye. Ten years brought us a wonderful home, three amazing dogs, a joint bank account, and a shared vision for our future. Our friends and family would often ask about a wedding or joke about “making things official,” but in our hearts we were already as official as it gets. When Adam completed nursing school in 2017 and our lives began to settle down for the first time in what seemed like forever, he proposed. He asked for my hand in marriage out in front of the very home where we met years earlier. In his proposal, Adam talked about the challenges our life together had thrown us but that we’ve viewed every challenge – every failed exam, every dog that we couldn’t save, every bill we struggled to pay – as a challenge we face together. He said at one point that, ‘there is no one else I’d rather struggle through this life with,’ and I think that pretty much sums up our relationship. In typical Adam-and-Ann fashion, we took our time as an engaged couple. We wanted to be intentional about our wedding. We took our time because, just like in our relationship, we wanted to enjoy every moment and ensure that our wedding was a reflection of who we are as a couple. In between our engagement and our wedding, life happened (as it does). My dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed away suddenly, we lost one of our dogs (also to cancer), and we incurred some unexpected financial challenges. Given that we were paying for the wedding on our own, the longer engagement just made sense. We weren’t rushed through the process or overly-stressed about the details, and we could be careful about the elements we wanted to include. Not that I needed any more assurance, but watching Adam, a nurse by trade, care for my dad in his final days, solidified my love for him. Watching your fiancé care for your dying parent is something I’d wish on no one. It did, however, make me fall head over heels with him all over again. It was one other battle that he didn’t need to fight with me, but he did. When it came to planning our wedding, we wanted it to be intentional and a reflection of us. We gave careful thought to our relationship, our family, our story. We wanted every aspect of our wedding weekend to be an honest

72

ISSUE 15/16

love story

and authentic reflection of who we are as a couple. We are not ones for tradition and our wedding was no exception. We added unique flare throughout the weekend and our guests loved it! Adam and I wanted an intimate wedding that could be enjoyed as a weekend affair with our closest loved ones. We enjoy being outdoors with our dogs and have a passion for finding unique properties in northern MN to spend quiet, reflective weekends with each other. We wanted somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Somewhere peaceful that forced our loved ones to get out of the cities and escape for a weekend. Little Lazy Lodge enabled us to bring the dogs, stay on property all weekend, and spend time amongst the woods. Even thinking about that magical place now makes my heart happy! During our ceremony, in lieu of a traditional unity ceremony we opted to share our favorite poem with our friends and family. “Sonnet 17” by Pablo Neruda has always struck a chord with me. I remember the first time I shared it with Adam and I explained that it reminded me of our relationship – one that happened by chance and, to be honest, wasn’t always pretty. In the early months, Adam and I disagreed on more things than we agreed on and I often questioned why we fought so hard to make our relationship work. When I questioned our relationship, I always went back to this poem. The lines, I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love straightforwardly, without complexities or pride. So I love you because I know no other way Than this: where I does not exist, nor you, only we served as a reminder that the reason behind why two people fall in love doesn’t matter. Rather, only the realization that the other person completes you is what matters. My favorite parts of the entire day were the moments that Adam and I spent together. In particular, I remember the few minutes we had prior to the ceremony beginning, when all of our guests were in the venue taking their seats and Adam and I remained in the lodge. We had spent the days prior together on the property and had been by each other’s side that day as we got ready for photos. We view each other as a team and have stood side-by-side for the past 10 years - our wedding day was to be no different. As we sat in the lodge, we poured ourselves a drink and just talked. Being the center of attention is not something either of us enjoy so we were both nervous, but the nerves seemed to fade away in those few minutes of just sitting next him, drink in hand, in the quiet of the lodge. We were lucky enough to have a few of those moments over the course of the evening where we could catch up alone and take in the events of the evening. I also remember one point during the night where

I was up in the venue balcony looking down on the dance floor and smiling as I watched my husband and his family dancing the night away. It was a much-needed moment alone for me to observe how happy everyone was and the fun that was being had in celebration of Adam and me. Our relationship stood the test of time long before we ever got married. Our relationship is the picture of partnership and support and I would not trade the last 10 years for anything. Marrying my best friend was so worth the wait – whatever this messy life throws at us, we’ll continue to handle together. It can only get better from here.

licia and Zach met the old-fashioned way: at a bar with their friends.

From Zach: “We met at this little bar called The Village in Hudson, Wisconsin through friends of friends. I thought I was going to just meet up for a drink so I was wearing a blue pullover, black sweatpants, and socks with sandals. Not to mention I had long hair and just threw a hat on with my hair down. As I was five minutes out I got a text from my friend saying ‘there is a girl here I want you to meet.’ I responded with ‘you couldn’t have let me know before I left so I could have put myself together rather than looking like I was about to curl up and watch Netflix for the night?!’ I remember seeing her and thinking she was the most beautiful girl I had seen. I definitely was a little shy and nervous, but finally we started talking and right before we were about to leave I took a chance and asked for her number.” Zach took a few days to reach out to Alicia after getting her number, and Alicia almost decided to blow him off when he finally did get in touch. Instead, she took a leap of faith and gave him a second chance. They met for ice cream, and they quickly fell in love. From Alicia: “If I had to pinpoint the exact moment I knew that I wanted to marry Zach, it was about 4 months into our relationship. I was getting my Master’s and working full-time. I had to stay up late one night to write a paper, so I didn’t have enough time to make myself lunch for work the next day. Zach showed up at my house at 6:00 a.m. (we lived 45 minutes apart!) with a lunch that he had made for me. I knew I loved him before, but that’s when I realized that Zach would show up for me and for us, even when it wasn’t the most convenient.”

As with many brides and grooms in 2020, Alicia and Zach had to be flexible. They changed their plans and dates three times over the course of the year, but finally tied the knot in July in the Twin Cities. Even before struggles relating to wedding planning in the age of COVID, Alicia and Zach fall back on their foundation of being there for each other to get through moments of hardship in their relationship. From Alicia: “Remembering that ‘the grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s greener where you water it’ is what gets me through the tough times. It’s easy, especially with social media, to compare yourself to others but comparison truly is the thief of joy. When we hit a rough patch, my version of ‘watering the grass’ is to focus on being the best version of myself and best partner that I can be because that’s all I can control. Luckily, Zach is committed to doing the same, so we always make it through.” From Zach: “Throughout our relationship before we even got married, we have been through the highs and the lows. They have ranged from both of us losing very close loved ones, as well as starting new jobs and receiving promotions to buying a house and renovating it. And through it all there is no person on this Earth that I would want by my side to comfort me in the lows and rejoice with me in the highs. ate and Jake’s love story started with a slow burn. They met through mutual friends but went to schools in different states, so it wasn’t until after they finished school several years later that Jake reached out to Cate.

From Cate: “We had seen each other a couple of times since we initially met, but the timing never worked out. Jake was persistent in his pursuit and it paid off: we went on our first date and never looked back! We were what felt like inseparable after we started dating. We decided to move in together about a year after dating. For both of us that was a good ‘test’. Living with someone, you learn a lot about a person, but we loved everything we learned about each other. Sure, we both have our annoyances and quirks but we quickly learned how to communicate and work through these as a couple.” They knew early on in their relationship that they had found the one they wanted to be with, but the ease at which they felt with each others’ families played a big role in realizing that. From Cate: “I knew Jake was the one after a couple months of dating. It was his funny personality, fun and adventurous spirit, and his quick wit. Jake is an extremely kind and giving guy. He has a great family and they have always been so warm and welcoming. We always have fun with them whether it be kickball out in the backyard or skating at the rink.” From Jake: “You just know and that is how I felt with Cate. Cate is such a kind hearted person and is always willing to do whatever she can to help out family or friends. She is always willing to try something new or different. One memory in particular is when Cate initially met my nieces and nephews, they wanted to play kickball, volleyball, badminton, and Cate was such a good sport jumping in to play after she just met them.” From Cate: “We complement each other really well and take on a lot of things like a team. For example: I am the big dreamer and Jake is the doer. We work well together to find how we achieve the big dream together as a couple, with planning and organization. Being a team, we try to take on tasks that we don’t particularly enjoy together like going grocery shopping, cleaning up after a meal, cleaning the house, or taking turns taking Bruno out to go to the bathroom. It is more enjoyable to do those things you don’t particularly enjoy when you can do it together.” Despite being married a relatively short time, they have learned the importance of seeing the big picture of their marriage when they come across difficult times: “Remember that you picked each other to spend forever with for a reason. Not every thing and every day is rainbows and butterflies, BUT you picked each other to get through the tough times with to be together to celebrate the good times. Just because you do not see eye to eye on something does not mean you love each other any less.”

rom Neha: “The best part of our story is that finding each other and hitting it off just happened, so naturally and unexpectedly. Sometimes I still can’t believe it went down how it did. We come from different cultures and backgrounds so this is not what I would have imagined, but I am so grateful for it all. “Kevin and I met on a spring night in NYC when I was dragged to a concert by a few close friends. Some sparks flew between us but I was hesitant as he lived in Minneapolis. Kevin visited a few more times that summer and the sparks turned into feelings that grew deeper with every interaction. Phone calls became regular from once every couple weeks to once a day. Our visits also became even more frequent too as there was an undeniably clear connection from day one. Kevin eventually made the big move from Minneapolis to NYC and him moving here was probably the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me. I knew there was something special about Kevin early on, and after a couple dates, I remember thinking ‘whoever ends up with that guy, is a really lucky girl.’ Falling in love with Kevin was probably one of the most fun things I’ve ever done in my life.” Neha and Kevin were among the many couples who altered their wedding plans due to COVID. From Neha: “We decided to cancel our big Indian-American wedding plans in New Orleans, and instead, got married at Kevin’s favorite place on earth: his parents’ lake home in Brainerd, MN. We planned the wedding in a very short amount of time (less than 6 weeks) and wanted to add some Indian traditions to our backyard ceremony. My mom sang a Jain prayer at the beginning of our ceremonies and my dad dictated the Indian ceremony first. We exchanged beautiful garlands, an Indian tradition which illustrates the “I do”, acknowledging “the unifying of two souls”. The Christian vows were read by Kevin’s dad, who is an incredible orator. Both ceremonies, were very dear to our hearts. “There were so many special moments during our wedding weekend, and given there were only 16 people - every single person played a huge role in shaping the weekend.”

illary and Kyle’s love story began over twenty years ago in the first grade at Crestwood Elementary School. They moved in and out of each other’s lives as friends through graduating high school and coming back home for summer parties on the lake while in college. Then in 2017, a serious medical emergency gave Kyle the push he needed to take a leap and be honest about his feelings for Hillary. “During the summer of 2017, Hillary had a major medical event while she was traveling in Peru. I was in Canada on a fishing trip when I found out about her condition and felt completely broken that I could not be there to help her through her recovery. When I was able to, I visited Hillary in the hospital, and when she got out I spent some time with her too. Later that summer I broke down and decided to tell Hillary that I had feelings for her, in fear that I would lose this amazing relationship I had built with this beautiful woman I had grown so close to over the years. Since that point we have basically been inseparable,” says Kyle. Their relationship took off from there, and they were engaged by the next fall. Kyle knew he was in love with Hillary during a day of chores around the house: “One day when we were doing some yard work, I went into the house to grab something and when I came back outside, Hillary had started rototilling the garden. In that moment, I saw the strength and independence of the amazing woman that I had grown to know so well over the last few months. I knew at that time she was the one for me.” When it came time to get married, they decided to elope on the shores of Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. “Hillary and I are a couple of outdoor enthusiasts with a slight case of introversion. We have enjoyed exploring the lush green forests of Wisconsin, the UP of Michigan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and look forward to trudging our boots through every other part of the world that lacks human existence. Overall, we feel our elopement speaks to how we intend to live our lives together. We like to be adventurous, explore new places together, enjoy the outdoors, and keep the most intimate parts of our relationship between just the two of us.” Photography Xsperience Photography | Florist Willow Flower Co. | Bridal Gown Designer LaLa Mira | Calligrapher Love Struck Lettering (Etsy) Wedding Planner and Officiant Lace & Brass Events Hair & Makeup Blush & CoCo LAKE BRIDE MAGAZINE

arah and Chris’s love story started (or almost didn’t start!) with a denied friend request. Luckily, Chris wasn’t deterred and with some persistence, charm, and a little help from a friend of Sarah’s, he eventually won her over. A couple of years later, he proposed in Aspen, Colorado, and they got married in 2017.

“Two years in and married life has been mostly what we expected. We think that no matter what, when you commit to someone for life there will be ups and downs, and we’ve had our fair share. We have renovated houses, moved, built a successful business, and now are expecting a child. There is never a dull moment, but we don’t believe either of us really thought there would be. Attacking life together has been a learning experience and I think there is always room to grow in supporting each other in life’s adventures. “No matter how long you know someone, there will always be situations and scenarios where you disagree and don’t align. The cliché answer to getting through the tough spots is communication, but we also think you need to truly understand the perspective the other person is coming from. It’s very easy to know what you believe and press that narrative, but truly thinking of other peoples’ feelings and perspectives is the key to being empathic. “Generally speaking, we think that ultimately we can’t take each other for granted. We have come together to spend our lives together and we don’t want to take our relationship for granted in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. It is hard sometimes - especially being in this day and age when the constant hustle of everyday work and ambitions get in the way of your relationship. At the end of the day we really try to put our phones down, stop work, and focus on each other,” says Sarah and Chris. They’ve learned their fair share of lessons along the way, but one stands out above the rest. “We think it’s the idea of love enduring. It took us awhile to finally meet and build a relationship and we’ve been through a lot of life’s milestones together and through all of them love has endured. Even if we are mad at each other and not seeing eye to eye, some funny moment or memory will come up and we come back together. It’s not always pretty and the human condition is everchanging, but knowing we are working to build every day is something that always brings us together and makes us stronger.”

a legacy of LOVE By Ester Knowlen and Anna Baluczynski

An interview between daughter and mother We’ve all been to that one wedding (possibly way more than one) where the anniversary dance ends and the one couple in their 80’s still standing is asked to give every other couple the most important marriage advice. Put on the spot and asked about the secret to the longevity of their marriage, tired since it’s way past their bedtime, and in a post-cake-sugar-crash, they usually get off easy by saying something like “always make your wife happy” or “never go to bed angry.” Somehow the advice given doesn’t quite seem up to snuff though. We all want more info, questions flood our heads, and we want to Sherlock Holmes our way to the secret they are clearly holding back on. Well, I decided to do some legwork on the subject. I asked my mother to share her heart.

Tell us a bit about yourselves, where are you from?

~

We are Anna and Aleksander Baluczynski, from Gdynia, Poland. And, in case you’re wondering where that is, it’s basically right in the middle of Poland, north, on the Baltic Sea.

How long have you been married?

~

44 years this year, in August.

Whoa! That really is a pretty big chunk of time! But before we dive into how things have developed over the years, let’s hear your story – how did you two meet??

~

We technically first “met” at a youth camp in the mountains of southern Poland, but since there were about 70 boys and girls and we didn’t run in the same circles, so to speak, we didn’t even so much as notice each other. Alex was into sports; myself a musician. One thing I do remember is his odd way of playing soccer. It was hard not to. He kicked the ball with his left foot just so, and every time it confused the heck out of the defense!! He scored many goals that way! Haha!! Fast forward a bit from there, Aleksander came to Bydgoszcz to continue his education. I think it was in September, 1974. He just happened to run into a mutual friend from the same youth camp who mentioned I lived in the same city and he absolutely had to get in touch with me. So, Aleksander called me up, introduced himself, explained he was new in a big city and didn’t really know anyone; asked if I was willing to show him around a bit. At the time I was really quite busy studying at the Music Academy, I played piano at church, and I led a music band, so dating really wasn’t much on my mind. There wasn’t time for boys! I invited him to my rehearsal, which was pretty much the only “free” time I had, and when he came he seemed to enjoy himself. Every time I accidentally glanced at him he would offer up the most charming smile in return. That’s the first time I noticed that he was really handsome. After the rehearsal we decided to skip the long ride home and walked for

hours instead, talking. This is where the friendship began. It felt like we had known each other for years! We had so much in common that the time flew by! From there we would spend evenings together talking on the phone. I introduced him to my friends, we’d go to the opera and concerts, and he’d always find the time to pick me up and walk me home. He became my closest friend. What I loved about him was that he made me feel really taken care of. He always knew when I was cold and would put his jacket over my shoulders, or would give me his scarf. He was a gentleman in every way in somewhat of a chivalrous-meets-brotherly fashion. Until the 1st of May. It was Labor Day, and those were kind of a big deal in Poland, especially back then – every University, every high school, all the kids would join the parade with flags and the whole shebang! It was a day off school, but we all kind of hated it since the parade was a required activity. Things improved a bit when I saw Aleksander heading my way, his larger-than-life Polish flag in hand, and a big smile across his face. We burst out laughing at this comical and unexpected meet-up, and with hearts skipping a beat we ditched our flags in the closest dumpster and ran away from the crowd. We kept holding hands walking by the river. It was a gorgeous sunny day. I remember we stopped under this huge willow tree and that’s the first time he told me he loved me, and kissed me, before I even had a chance to reply... That’s how our story began.

What a sweet story! So... fast forward how long? I mean, friends, to holding hands, to a kiss, to...? How did you know you wanted to spend the rest of your life together? It’s a big step! How did you know you’d be good together? How does one make a life-long decision like that?

~

From a young age my parents really led by example and taught me that you become like the people you choose to spend time with, so I knew that even though I was really easy going and made friends easily, it was important to choose my close friends carefully. All of my friends were people of value - ones I respected. People with similar big goals. People I wanted to model or learn from. That’s how I knew that Aleksander and I were a good match – we seemed to think the same about the things that really mattered. We were both raised in loving homes, we believed that God at the center of a relationship was the key to a happy life, we valued family, and it was very important

to us to have strong relationships in our life and an open house where anyone felt welcome. Both our families were very hospitable; someone constantly stopping over for an unexpected visit, and we loved that we shared that passion for having a strong community of people to share life with. We weren’t identical, and we weren’t interested in the same things. Music was my passion, since I grew up in a very musical family (we’re talking generations of musicians, music so much in our daily lives it felt like it flowed in our veins), whereas Aleksander was very much a realist, with a clever business mind. Our love for each other was what we found in common, and it became a bridge between our interests. Aleksander also always made me feel like I mattered to him; he was protective, and very caring. I think all those things combined didn’t exactly determine that we were a ‘match made in heaven,’ but they certainly made for an aligned foundation to build a life on.

Was it always easy? Did you always feel in love?

~

No, it wasn’t always easy. In fact, our relationship survived a trial by fire pretty early on. We were very much in love, we were planning a future together, and talking about getting married the following year, when my dad (at age 49) died tragically in a car accident the day after we got engaged. I was incredibly close with my dad and it was an unimaginable loss that really shook me to the core. Aleksander came through for me in ways I never expected. He was a shoulder to cry on and lean on. He shared my pain as if it were his own. That singular event changed us. Aleksander grew up really quickly, going from a 20-year-old kid in love to a man stepping in to help, as much as he could, two women out of their minds with grief. We decided to get married sooner

than we planned, because he wanted to be close-by. It wasn’t a blissful wedding day because our whole family was grieving the loss of my dad, but it was a bit of respite from all the sadness, and it really brought us closer together, in a deeper way.

Were there any moments when you thought you maybe wouldn’t make it... I know it’s a hard question to ask, but if there were, or if you questioned staying together, what kept you going?

~

Our wedding day comes to mind... I was getting my hair ready and in those days we used these hot metal rollers that were quite tricky to get to work. I realized that there were two hours left until our wedding, and my hair was still wet and refusing to cooperate. All the ladies in the house jumped in to help (imagine a Polish version of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and you basically get the idea!). Meanwhile, in the other room Aleksander was really struggling to get his bow tie on and his hair to look right, and he kind of lost it. He marched in the bathroom, saw all the chaos taking care of me and demanded to know why I was the only one everyone cared about, why he wasn’t deserving of anyone’s attention, and kind of in anger shouted that one day I’d have to learn to take care of him as well and not just think of myself. I was shocked! See, in my house no one raised their voice. Ever! My parents never shouted at us or each other, they were very logical, soft spoken people. I sobbed sitting on the toilet in my wedding dress, ready to call off the wedding! It took a pretty minute for everyone to calm down and for us to work things out. We barely made it to the altar on time. Talk about an epic first fight!! Once we actually got married, it was only a few months until the next big life adjustment took us by surprise. I was in between my 1st and 2nd year of the University when I found out I was pregnant. I was still grieving the loss of my dad, and since in those days there wasn’t much in terms of grief counselors or anyone who really helped you with these overwhelming feelings, I was pretty much on my own making sense of everything. Getting pregnant (while studying full time) was NOT ideal. In fact, it wasn’t long until I realized it was more than I could handle. On top of that news we were also figuring out how to be married, and it was becoming very apparent that we were very different people - so we were navigating all kinds of challenges. Aleksander was raised in a very disciplined family. He was the second of four children, with two working parents, and he didn’t tend to mince words. I was raised in a very soft spoken, loving, artful-soul kind of family, with just my brother and me, and my mom staying at home taking care of the household. Needless to say, we approached problems differently. Despite all our differences, our commitment to loving each other won. One thing that really helped us out, and helped overcome those personality differences was setting very clear rules of engagement for disagreements. For one, we mutually agreed that we were not allowed to bring up things from previous fights or from the day before. It really helped us start each new day as a clean slate, teaching us how to forgive and move forward without always dwelling on the past. Looking back, had I known everything would work out, and there would be a beautiful, spunky little boy coming into our lives and making us a family, I wouldn’t have stressed so much. Both our children (Martin and Ester) have proven to be absolute joys and blessings and parenting challenges worth the long-term, deep love and relationships. I’d like to mention another really hard time in our life, where I almost gave up. It was in 2003, when we moved to England. We made more money, we both worked, our standard of living increased, and you’d think all those circumstances would have made us really happy. And... they did for awhile, but after a bit we had less and less time for each other. We worked hard and all of our commitments made us really tired; exhausted at times. One day in November 2007 an ambulance took Aleksander to the hospital from work with what turned out to be a stroke. Thankfully the after-effects were fairly mild, but the stroke did affect his personality – he became nervous, easily stressed out, and irritable, which in turn made me feel unloved and unappreciated. Things got rough for a while. We both took separate trips (me to my daughter in the U.S., him to see his parents in Poland), and after doing much praying and soulsearching, we did return with a renewed zest for making things work. We both believed that we didn’t just vow or contractually agree to be together when we got married, we had made a pact – in sickness and in health, ‘til death do us part. And we meant it. Just because we wanted things to work, it didn’t mean that we magically snapped our

98

fingers and we felt in love again. When we started to focus on each other however, and really listen, go out of our way to be mindful, be kind, spend time together, and put the other’s needs in front of our own, in time our feelings caught up, and we did fall in love again.

OK, so drop some meaty, juicy marriage advice on us! Is there any relationship wisdom that can really make a difference?

~

Let’s start with something for the dating and considering marriage. Expecting that you can change your spouse is a slippery slope. You’ve heard it before, but I’ll unpack what that means, to make it simple – marry someone who you respect as they are when they are being themselves, not someone you hope to respect once they change things A, B, C, and D once you’re married. You’ll save yourself a lot of heartache marrying the right person whose values align with yours rather than trying to steer them towards your ideal (often unwillingly).

disagreements, and let go of the mission to prove who was right or wrong. It’s not easy to respect your spouse when you’re mad at them, but we started trying really hard to not allow ourselves to say anything hurtful in anger that could not be unheard, and really going out of our way to see the other’s side of the story. We also realized that any words that chipped away at each other’s confidence or self-worth were really a battle we both lost, since our relationship as a whole would suffer as a result. Lastly, if you are married already, I’d love to pass on this last piece of advice to you - learn how to build your partner up, respect him, and with absolute fascination look to learn more things about him, rather than try to change him (or her, since it applies both ways). Creating an environment of safety and acceptance will make your relationship, your conversations, your time together something you both look forward to, not something you (or he) constantly need a break from.

What are the most important one or two things you would say to your 20-year-old self knowing what you know now?

~ Once married - fight fair. That’s one we had to learn the hard way, and it took us a long time, but step by step we got better at it. It turns out that when you fight (which you will ;-) ), the problem doesn’t lie in what you’re fighting about but how you’re going about the fighting. Since Aleksander and I are very different people we had to learn how to disarm the hostile environment, bring some lightness into our

There are definitely a couple things I would have wanted my younger self to know... You have your whole life ahead of you. Prepare yourself because things won’t always be easy. And, don’t try to change everything in one day. Relationships are more of a step by step marathon towards a finish line rather than a sprint.

LAKE BRIDE MAGAZINE

ISSUE 15/16

99

You have a beautiful life ahead of you as long as you focus on the important things in the right order. If you put God first, husband and family a close second, work third, and serving and helping others fourth, you will have a happy and fulfilling life (most of our marriage problems came from a poor order of priorities).

What is the best marriage advice you ever got?

~

I think some of the best marriage advice came from my mom when, one day pretty early on into marriage, I ran to her crying after getting in a fight with Aleksander. She waited for me to calm down and looking straight in my eyes she said, “If you want a happy marriage, one with love and respect, then next time come running to me when your husband buys you flowers or does something really nice for you. When you guys are having a disagreement, however, try to solve it yourselves first, asking God for help and grace, without seeking an audience to vent your side to. This way you’ll make it much harder for your in-laws to get involved or feel entitled to an opinion. They might make up their mind about your relationship, or you, that might not be easily changed. You don’t want your in-laws getting involved to try to fix things. Do you?”

In Closing

~

Being married is amazing. It’s a challenge and a fun adventure, and it’s really worth giving it your best. We hope this little piece we put together gives you a taste for more, gives you the gumption to pursue each other and think generationally, because relationships don’t always come together easily, but they are an investment that stand the test of time and always pay off. Life on this Earth is relatively short. Spend yours head over heels in love. As you read above, it is possible for love to last a lifetime. That’s what we hope for you. ~

NEWLYWEDS’ NIGHT OUT Minneapolis, Minnesota has arguably one of the most under-the-radar-cool restaurant scenes, and Demi is one of the newest additions to a growing roster of highly acclaimed eateries. The chefs behind the counter at Demi strive to give guests a dining experience that they’ll never forget - on top of serving good (and we mean good!) food. And you know the food is going to be good because Demi is the latest project of James Beard AwardWinning Chef and Minnesota native Gavin Kaysen. He honed his culinary skills at some of the world’s best restaurants and under some of the industry’s most wellrespected chefs, but he has journeyed back home to Minnesota with his family to open his own restaurants and begin training the next generation of young chefs. The path to Demi started 25 years ago when a Minnesota chef named George Serra convinced then sixteen-year-old Gavin to come work for him. Gavin already had a love of cooking ingrained in him thanks to his grandmother, Dorothy, but Serra gave him the push he needed to find his passion as a chef. He graduated from the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont in 2001 before taking a chance in 2005 that paid off big and launched him to where he is today in his career. “I wrote a letter to Daniel Boulud (my former boss) in 2005 requesting a one-week stage (where you work for educational reasons) in his restaurant in NYC. That sparked a beautiful friendship and he later hired me to be his chef at Café Boulud. I worked there close to eight years. It was my PhD in cooking and hospitality,” says Kaysen.

We may live without poetry, music and art; We may live without conscience, and live without heart; We may live without friends; we may live without books; But civilized man cannot live without cooks. We may live without books - what is knowledge but grieving? We may live without hope - what is hope but deceiving? We may live without love - what is passion but pining? But where is the man that can live without dining? - Lucile

That training in cooking and hospitality is brought full circle at Demi, where the front of house guest experience is as important as the cooking. Kaysen says, “My mission is to provide delicious food in a joyful setting while maintaining the standards of genuine care and hospitality for my team, guests, and partners of the restaurants.” With two other thriving restaurants under his belt, Kaysen wanted Demi to be something different from the rest. A place where his talented team of chefs could truly showcase their passion and skills in an intimate environment while interacting first-hand with their guests. Demi is a tasting menu format where the chefs create a two or two and a half hour experience using the season’s best and freshest ingredients. “Demi focuses on creating and serving delicious food. We shine light on ingredients grown in this small corner of the country, while also incorporating special and rare ingredients from around the world,” Kaysen elaborates The menu evolves and changes with the seasons, so your culinary experience will be different each time you visit. The intimate environment and personal attention, however, is something you can expect every time. “Demi brings us back to the original purpose of a restaurant: to restore. Our tasting experience seeks to ignite a sense of curiosity and comfort.”

Add the sugo finto or tomato paste and cook until you see the oil start to separate from the tomato. Deglaze with the bottle of wine and cook until you see the sauce begin to thicken. Return the beef to the pot and add the broth, rosemary, and bay leaves. Cover the pot and place in the oven to cook for 2 hours and 45 minutes. While that’s cooking, make the pommes aligot. Add the potatoes to a pot of water with the herbs and salt. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 25 minutes. Remove the herbs, strain the potatoes and peel them. Place the peeled potatoes back in the pot, add the warm cream and melted butter, and mash. Add in the cheese as you’re mashing, and once they’re at a smooth consistency, add in remaining 2 tablespoons of salt. Keep covered in a warm place until ready to serve. Once cooked, let the roast cool for 10 minutes. Remove the beef from the pot and place on a cutting board to slice. Remove the bay leaves and rosemary stems from the stew. Squeeze any garlic cloves remaining in their skins into the stew, discarding the skins. Serve the sliced meat along with the vegetables and atop pommes aligot with a ladle of cooking liquid on top.
