Dining Inspiration If you're a foodie, we invite you to take a taste of Southwest Louisiana. From boudin to barbecue and Cajun to Creole cuisine, not only can you find delicious food, but we have food trails dedicated to the exploration of Southwest Louisiana. Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail:

Considered a staple snack in the southern regions of the Bayou State, boudin is made of varying amounts of pork meat, liver, rice, onions, parsley and dry seasonings like salt, red pepper, black pepper and garlic powder. Bought by the pound, boudin is Southwest Louisiana's favorite finger food. It's perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner or anytime in between. Check out the best places to get boudin at VisitLakeCharles.org/BoudinTrail.

part of our culture and everyday life. It’s not just a beverage; people come together over coffee. Acadian Coffee Roasters was created for the love of coffee. They brew 100% organic and fair trade beans. You'll see their coffee and collaborations throughout the Lake Area. For example, they have teamed up with Crying Eagle to create "Pistol Bridge Porter" beer, and you can order Acadian Coffee Roaster's brews at local restaurants such as The Bekery!

See first-hand how the company’s popular Bayou Rum is produced by taking one of their tours offered Tuesday-Saturday throughout the day. Vodka: Every drop of Yellowfin Vodka is carefully crafted from locally sourced crystallized sugarcane and is fermented, distilled, filtered and bottled at a single location in Sulphur, LA.  Coffee: As native Louisianians, we were raised with the introduction of coffee at an early age - we call it "coffee milk." PGA Tour’s Korn Ferry Lake Charles Championship This exciting community event will make its debut March 21-27.

Join the action at the inaugural Lake Charles Championship and witness the next wave of PGA TOUR stars, March 21-27 at Golden Nugget Lake Charles’ Country Club Golf Course! The Lake Charles Championship was announced in August of 2019 with a plan to debut the following March, but COVID-19 pushed the inaugural event to 2021 before hurricane damage suffered by Laura and Delta moved the event yet again. After two years of waiting, this highly anticipated Korn Ferry Tour stop promises to be one of the Tour’s most unique stops on the schedule, as well as contribute to the rebuilding and resurgence of the Southwest Louisiana community.

Southwest Louisiana will welcome 156 professional golfers from around the world for this inaugural tournament, each competing for a $750,000 purse. The Lake Charles Championship is one of 26 tournaments on the Korn Ferry Tour’s 2022 schedule that spans four countries and 18 states. Located right on the bayou, The Country Club at Golden Nugget is an 18-hole golf course designed by the award-winning Todd Eckenrode and Origins Golf Design and has miniverde greens and celebration tees, fairways and roughs. The contrast of the bayou, bunkers and greens make this a mustplay for all. The tournament starts with practice rounds on Monday and the Pairings Party on Tuesday night. The Pro-Am will follow on Wednesday with the tournament set to begin on Thursday. The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties after play on Friday, and the event will close out as the champion is crowned on Sunday. Fans are also encouraged to attend the four-day tournament to catch a glimpse of golf’s next stars to compete

on the PGA TOUR. If you want to get even closer to the action, consider volunteering for the tournament! There are a variety of volunteer positions that need to be filled on and off the course. Whether you’re an avid golfer or if you’re just looking to lend a helping hand, there is an opportunity for you to be involved in this unique professional sporting event. For more information on the event or to learn more about volunteering, go to LakeCharlesChampionship.com.

For details on all the golf courses and offerings in the area, go to VisitLakeCharles.org/golf.

Live Music Festivals

Live @ the Lakefront

Colorful lights, the thumping of the bass drum and the roar of cheering fans. Nothing gets everyone moving quite like live music festivals, and some of the best entertainment for families, couples and music-lovers is free and readily accessible to downtown businesses or the lakefront. One of the crowd favorites for event-goers of all ages is Live @ the Lakefront, supporting the Arts Council & Humanities of Southwest Louisiana. For three consecutive weekends, everyone can enjoy food vendors, interacting with local artists and listening to live bands rock the lakefront from the golden hour on Friday evenings until the sun sets in beautiful shades of orange, pinks and hues of purple. The breeze off the lake adds to the atmosphere of magic for each concert. Another concert series that dominates the spring calendar is Downtown at Sundown, which takes

music. In addition to nightclubs, many local restaurants feature live music on a regular basis as well as for weekend brunches. Rikenjak’s is located on Ryan Street in midtown Lake Charles not too far from downtown or McNeese State University. It’s one of the only places to hear music practically any night of the week, and it’s location lures you in with lighted live oak trees, an outdoor music stage, games and brightly colored umbrellas. The restaurant also features an indoor stage and delicious food and brews from around Louisiana. Crying Eagle Brewing is another crowd favorite located off McNeese Street in Lake Charles. The outdoor beer garden and stage allow for rock bands and entertainment, while the inside area features The Bistro for good eats and a loft for overlooking the brewery or private events. The Bistro’s menu

pairs with Crying Eagle’s brews and seasonal brews on tap. Live music and entertainment are a top priority. Restaurant Calla offers up an elevated, casual dining experience with seasonal fare, small plates and creative selections from the menu items to cocktails and drinks. Brunches and live music are popular additions to the atmosphere at Calla. Luna Bar & Grill in downtown Lake Charles has been a crowd favorite for many years, voted the #1 or #2 restaurant over the past decade. Check out live music during the week or Jazz Brunch on Sundays! Paul’s Rib Shack provides a hearty meal with indoor and outdoor seating with a stage in the back for live music. Of course, Golden Nugget, L’Auberge and Delta Downs casino resorts and night spots like OB’s Bar & Grill or Cowboy’s feature live bands - especially on weekends!

Mardi Gras Mambo! Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana has a colorful history dating back to 1882, when Momus, King of Mardi Gras, landed his royal yacht at the foot of Pujo Street. Mardi Gras did not experience a full revival in Lake Charles until 1979, when several Krewe captains formed the "Krewe of Krewes" with the prime purpose of parading and promoting Mardi Gras for the Southwest Louisiana area.

Mardi Gras Season

Mardi Gras of Imperial Calcasieu celebration begins January 6 with the annual Twelfth Night Revelry, and it concludes on Mardi Gras Day. Most of the public festivities happen on Mardi Gras weekend starting the Friday before Fat Tuesday!

to children and family activities during the celebration, and parade routes are filled with families lining the streets, so that makes Mardi Gras in Lake Charles a unique place to experience Carnival.

Sweet & Savory Treats during Mardi Gras

King cakes, gumbo and crawfish are all traditional Mardi Gras fare. Of course, King Cakes are the sweet treats of the season. The origin of the modern King Cake dates back to 12th century France, where the cake was baked on the eve of Epiphany, the final day of the Christmas celebration. It came to be known as "Twelfth Night," which commemorates the three kings' visit to the Christ child, 12 days after his birth. French settlers brought the custom of the King Cake to Louisiana in the 18th century. Check out places to get King Cake, Gumbo and Crawfish at VisitLakeCharles.org!

Diversity and Black-owned Businesses Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana is a blend of diverse cultures and people. Like many cities across Louisiana, we celebrate one another through food and music. With delicious Creole cooking and toe-tapping Zydeco traditions, we enjoy our cultural gumbo every day of the year! To truly get a taste of Lake Charles, supporting local businesses is the way to go. The area is brimming with entrepreneurs and creatives, and we have a variety of Creole and black-owned businesses in Southwest Louisiana from coffee shops and restaurants to retail, venues - even local musicians with merchandise for sale. So, what does "Creole" mean for Southwest Louisiana? Creoles are Louisiana natives with a mixture of African-American, American Indian, French and Spanish heritage. The term has evolved over several centuries, at one

time being the descriptive phrase for the children of first generation French and Spanish immigrants who populated the Louisiana Territory and after Louisiana became a state. But over time, with the intermixing of Africans, white settlers and Native Americans, a whole new identity was created, and the word “Creole” was the term that brought a melting pot of people under a social umbrella. The Creoles were some of the “first families of Louisiana,” and official records reflect that they have been here for over 300 years. Creole soul can be recognized in the religious, culinary, social, and entertainment expressions of these people with deep Louisiana roots.   To learn more about Creole Culture, check out VisitLakeCharles.org/creole, and for a list of black-owned businesses, go to VisitLakeCharles.org/blackowned.

1911 Historic City Hall in Downtown Lake Charles, LA

Cultural Experiences in Southwest Louisiana If you’re spending an afternoon or evening in downtown Lake Charles, you can top off any dining or shopping adventure with a side of culture by checking out the 1911 Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center to see local art and traveling exhibits. The multifaceted facility features three floors of exhibit space, which includes the Black Heritage Gallery and Gallery by the Lake – located across from the historic Calcasieu Parish Courthouse. For a full scope on Imperial Calcasieu’s history, meander over to the Imperial Calcasieu Museum where a 375-year-old Sallier Oak graces the grounds with its lush shade and roots that run as deep as the culture in Southwest Louisiana. Learn about the early days of the Lake Charles area and view exhibits on display, such as exquisite Mardi Gras costumes on display January – March. The museum hosts activities near the historic oak such as Yoga Under the

Oak, so be sure to check out the calendar for exhibits, receptions and social events. On the west side of the river, the Henning Cultural Center sits next to The Grove Park and Heritage Square Pavilion where outdoor events take place. The Cultural Center is tucked way beneath sleepy oak trees, and it features local art and exhibits year-round along with artifacts and information on Sulphur’s past as a sulfur mining town. Many city-wide events take place on the grounds of Heritage Square such as car shows, movie nights or Christmas Under the Oaks. The DeQuincy Railroad Museum in the northern part of Calcasieu Parish is located inside the Kansas City Southern Railroad Depot built in 1923, also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are two passenger waiting rooms, a central agent/ticket office, a baggage room, and an open veranda on the bottom floor.

Henning Cultural Center in Sulphur, LA

On the museum grounds, you will also find a 1913 steam locomotive, two vintage cabooses and a 1947 Pullman passenger coach! Each April, the Louisiana Railroad Days Festival celebrates the history of DeQuincy as a railroad town! There are other ways to engage with the arts community at Farmers’ Markets and locally owned art galleries and retail outlets such as Alexander Art Studio in Lake Charles or Flock of Five Art Emporium in Sulphur. You can also learn about Cajun/ Creole roots, music, food and Southwest Louisiana’s landscape and estuaries at Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point. For a full description of the museums and galleries as well as arts events in the area, log on to VisitLakeCharles.org.
