WELCOME TO LAKE CHARLES/ Southwest Louisiana

H

ere in Southwest Louisiana, we take time to enjoy life, food, music and good company. Sometimes, we like to describe the area as a place where Cajuns, cowboys and the coast come together, and it creates an eclectic and relaxing atmosphere. Be sure to visit our attractions, museums, galleries, and experience culinary delights from Cajun food in locally owned restaurants with recipes that have been in families for centuries and the Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail. Casino entertainment and area nightlife have live music throughout the fall. If the outdoors is more your speed, you can soak in adventures along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road. Stop by the convention & visitors bureau, 1205 N. Lakeshore Drive, and visit with our friendly staff while you grab a cup of coffee to learn more. Check us out online at www.visitlakecharles.org or call 337-436-9588.

7 FALL FESTIVAL FOODS YOU’VE GOTTA EAT!

S

outhwest Louisiana is the Festival Capital of Louisiana with more than 75 annual fairs and festivals. True to our Cajun nature, we love passing a good time, dancing and indulging in delicious foods and drinks. And naturally several of our festivals are full of and centered around great food. You can generally find fried alligator bites, Cajun jambalaya and gumbo at any of the festivals. Being so close to Texas, we have that Cajun Cowboy way of smoking our barbecue, so ribs, brisket, and pork steaks are very popular. At a recent festival, braised pork belly with cracklins and gumbo boullette (ball) were served. It’s fantastic to see local chefs taking traditional Cajun snacks, like cracklins, and jazzing them up or serving gumbo in a totally new way – a FRIED ball! At festivals, you are usually mingling, dancing and people-watching so it only makes sense to serve food that can be carried around. There’s no pomp and circumstance at a Louisiana festival! Eat your fried Gulf shrimp right off the stick!

It’s not just Mondays when Cajuns eat red beans and rice. They are easy to find at area festivals, especially with seared and smoky sausage. Showing up at festivals, farmers markets and even the Lake Charles Symphony, Pops and Rockets popsicles are a hit! Their bold, fresh flavors are the perfect pairing for any event. Local “flavor-ites” are “Blue Moon on Mango,” “Pictures of Blue(berry),” and “Touch of Guava.” And this year, the most sought after food at area festivals are recipes from the

Sloppy Taco Truck. Their menu features the Super Fry Shrimp taco, the Boudin & Shrimp taco and their signature tacoThe Sloppy; grilled ribeye, braised pork, purple onion, pickled jalapeños, and cheese drilled with spicy rémoulade. The thing about Southwest Louisiana festivals is, there’s always something cookin’! Make sure you download our Lake Charles Events App to have access to all of our festivals at your fingertips and try a few (or all) of these tasty bites!

TURNING BACK THE CLOCKS Each community in Southwest Louisiana has its own unique blend of character and history. With pirates, railroads, Victorian mansions and sleepy oaks, there is much to discover by looking into the colorful pages of the past.

HISTORY OF OUR SIX CITIES LAKE CHARLES

The romantic history of Lake Charles, involving tales of pirates and buried treasure, began with the arrival of the first French settlers in the 1760s. The lumber boom was responsible for the early rapid growth of the city. Without architects in the area until the early 1900s, the structures reflect the individual characteristics of the carpenters in the “Charpentier Historic District,” on the National Register of Historic Places.

SULPHUR

In the late 1800s, Sulphur was a sulfur mining haven. In 1907, the average population of the Sulphur Mines area was 5,000, making it a town unto itself. This fifty-acre tract of land was then known as the “richest fifty acres in the world.” The Brimstone Museum details Sulphur’s early history.

WESTLAKE

DeQUINCY

Westlake was originally named “Rio Hondo,” and the area from Westlake up the Sabine River was also known as “No Man’s Land” to rustlers, pirates and renegades. In the early 1800s, settlers came to the area, purchased land and renamed it Westlake.

In 1897 the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railway, now the Kansas City Southern, reached the point where its main line bent toward the southwest to Beaumont and the old Calcasieu River. Vernon & Shreveport tram line, now the Lake Charles branch of the K.C.S., joined the main line causing the rise of the town DeQuincy. Today, you can visit the DeQuincy Railroad Museum.

VINTON

IOWA

The quaint town of Vinton was once traveled by Civil War soldiers. The soldiers cut a road extending from an area in Vinton known as “Niblett’s Bluff” on the Sabine River. There are annual re-enactments of battles at Niblett’s Bluff Park.

The history of Iowa is filled with stories of the early Midwestern settlers from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa to the French Canadians (Cajuns) to Jean Lafitte’s pirates along the Old Spanish Trail. The railroad that cut through this country brought settlers who were lured to the prairie land for rice farming, raising cattle, and later, oil fields. Known also for the Iowa Rabbit Festival.

VETERANS DAY AVENUE OF FLAGS Nov. 11

T

he annual Veterans Day Avenue of Flags is a sight to see! Nearly 1,000 memorial flags float majestically in the breeze at serene Orange Grove/ Graceland Cemetery, 2023 Broad Street, all to honor the men and women who bravely served our country, according to Ted Harless, event director. Lake Charles’ Avenue of Flags is the largest display of casket flags in the entire country. The collection grows every year with donations

34

from family members of deceased veterans. From 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, visitors may walk, cycle, or drive through the flag display along the cemetery’s winding roads, all lined with beautiful live oaks. Several hundred visitors come out to see the display each year. Local volunteers help put up the flags and take them down – all in one day. The memorial flags, which measure 5 feet by 9 ½ feet, are too large to be properly displayed at home

and are better suited to be displayed on flagpoles. In addition to the memorial flags, the Avenue of Flags also features a history circle where replicas of eight previous United States flags are flown. Admission to the Avenue of Flags is free. The flags are also displayed each Memorial Day. For more information, call 337-437-7810.
