ere in Southwest Louisiana, we take time to enjoy life, food, music and good company. Sometimes, we like to describe the area as a place where Cajuns, cowboys and the coast come together, and it creates an eclectic and relaxing atmosphere. Be sure to visit our attractions, museums, galleries, and experience culinary delights from Cajun food in locally owned restaurants with recipes that have been in families for centuries and the Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail. Horse racing action, casino entertainment and live music are available throughout the year. STAYING COOL THIS SUMMER

S

ummertime in Southwest Louisiana means two words: hot and humid! Have no fear – we’ve got a few sure fire ways to beat the heat! When summer arrives in full force – the first stop for many visitors is the pool. Southwest Louisiana boasts three fabulous pool complexes to keep you comfortable and entertained. L’Auberge Casino Resort entices guests outdoors with their tropical garden pool complex. Just a hint of imagination will transport you to the relaxing Caribbean. Grab a floatie and gently meander down the Lazy River along lush green vegetation, beneath jungle island bridges, and around the island. Just down the boardwalk from L’Auberge, you’ll find the Golden Nugget. Their H2O Pool and Bar has an exciting Las Vegas vibe, with upbeat music, contemporary seating, poolside cabanas, and lively libations. The extra-large pool features adult only and family sections, tanning ledges with in-water loungers, swim up daybeds, a swim up bar and Lazy River with slides. Sulphur Parks & Recreation (SPAR) Waterpark offers fun in the sun for all ages. This wild wet destination offers a 600 foot long Raging River, Larry’s Lazy River, and the Lagoon Pool. Younger guests will enjoy Patch’s Splash Pad and Splash & Play Island, with fountains, tipping buckets, large and small-scale slides and a gigantic yellow bucket that dumps 500 gallons of water every two minutes! Hot weather often has us craving cooler, lighter food. Southwest Louisiana’s solution – sno cones, popsicles and frozen daiquiris! Louisiana sno cones are special. Most sno cones are made with chunky, coarse style of crushed ice, but the ice of a Louisiana sno cone is shaved, which makes the ice light and fluffy, like, SNOW! Along with a dizzying variety of flavors, these treats are also served “stuffed” with ice cream or with “cream” drizzled on top. Delish! The frozen treats don’t stop there. Local popsicle vendors Pops and Rockets are cooling the summer temps with their selection of gourmet pops. These popsicles are bringing fresh and bold flavors that are inspired by 80s tunes. Flavors to look for this summer are 99 Red Doubloons, Blue Moon on Mango and Sweet Child O Lime. And last but not least – the daiquiri. No summer evening is complete without the sweet taste of a frozen daiquiri. And lucky for travelers we have several drive-up establishments to choose from and a TON of flavor combos! For the full list of places to go to beat the heat, visit www.visitlakecharles.org/staycool. Happy Summer!

TURNING BACK THE CLOCKS Each community in Southwest Louisiana has its own unique blend of character and history. With pirates, railroads, Victorian mansions and sleepy oaks, there is much to discover by looking into the colorful pages of the past.

HISTORY OF OUR SIX CITIES LAKE CHARLES

WESTLAKE

VINTON

The romantic history of Lake Charles, involving tales of pirates and buried treasure, began with the arrival of the first French settlers in the 1760s. The lumber boom was responsible for the early rapid growth of the city. Without architects in the area until the early 1900s, the structures reflect the individual characteristics of the carpenters in the “Charpentier Historic District,” on the National Register of Historic Places. Lake Charles celebrated 150 years in 2017.

Westlake was originally named “Rio Hondo,” and the area from Westlake up the Sabine River was also known as “No Man’s Land” to rustlers, pirates and renegades. In the early 1800s, settlers came to the area, purchased land and renamed it Westlake.

The quaint town of Vinton was once traveled by Civil War soldiers. The soldiers cut a road extending from an area in Vinton known as “Niblett’s Bluff” on the Sabine River. Once known as “Fort Niblett,” the area was home to a lumber camp, railroad, general store, hotel and more.

SULPHUR

DeQUINCY

IOWA

In the late 1800s, Sulphur was a sulfur mining haven. In 1907, the average population of the Sulphur Mines area was 5,000, making it a town unto itself. This fifty-acre tract of land was then known as the “richest fifty acres in the world.” The Brimstone Museum details Sulphur’s early history.

In 1897 the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railway, now the Kansas City Southern, reached the point where its main line bent toward the southwest to Beaumont and the old Calcasieu River. Vernon & Shreveport tram line, now the Lake Charles branch of the K.C.S., joined the main line causing the rise of the town DeQuincy. Today, you can visit the DeQuincy Railroad Museum.

The history of Iowa is filled with stories of the early Midwestern settlers from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa to the French Canadians (Cajuns) to Jean Lafitte’s pirates along the Old Spanish Trail. The railroad that cut through this country brought settlers who were lured to the prairie land for rice farming, raising cattle, and later, oil fields. Known also for the Iowa Rabbit Festival.

ARTS & CRABS FEST August 18

S

outhwest Louisiana’s only arts and crab festival returns Saturday, August 18, from 5-8 p.m. at the Burton Complex, 7001 Gulf Hwy., Lake Charles. Arts and Crabs Fest celebrates the ties between Louisiana seafood and culture. With the purchase of a ticket, festival goers can access an extensive crab and beer tasting which features some of Southwest Louisiana’s most popular restaurants, each offering a crab dish that is representative of their cuisine’s styles and personalities. Louisiana craft brew samples are offered as complementary additions to all dishes. Throughout the event, crab chefs battle for festivalgoers’ votes in the annual Best Crab Dish award, which is determined by the amount of tips each chef receives. Other highlights include live music and an expansive art market featuring local artists’ paintings, jewelry and more. Arts & Crabs Fest is quickly becoming a signature event for Southwest Louisiana and is consistently a sell-out. For more information and to buy tickets, go to www.artscouncilswla.org or call (337) 439-2787.

CULINARY EXPLORATIONS

S

outhwest Louisiana has no shortage of culinary delights. Thanks to the recent brewery resurgence, unique Cajun cuisine and the popularity of food trucks, there are even more delicious opportunities for both locals and visitors to experience. One of the experiences that need to be on your bucket list is Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail. Boudin (pronounced BOO-dan) is a blend of pork, liver, rice, onions, parsley and dry seasonings that is stuffed into a casing. There are more than 30 local eateries that are a part of the Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail, offering a variety of boudin flavors, including smoked, mild, alligator and shrimp! Crying Eagle Brewing Company and Rikenjaks are taking craft brew to new heights. Both companies feature beer gardens, live music and most importantly, a variety of beers. Crying Eagle Brewing Co. also offers free tours of its state of the art facility. Rikenjaks partners local and Louisiana brews with a full menu that includes burgers, boudin, po’boys and more. With no shortage of quality sugarcane in Louisiana, craft spirits, specifically vodka and rum, have a renaissance of its own. Yellowfin Vodka and Bayou Rum are both are distilled using 100% Louisiana sugarcane and are 100% delicious. You can even take a tour to learn how these craft spirits are made.

You’ll love the homegrown, from the ground up stories of both these businesses, not to mention the samples! By adding Acadian Coffee Roasters to your list of stops, you will effectively visit the Southwest Louisiana Brews & Spirits Trail (after all, coffee is a “brew” too!). Acadian Coffee Roasters is a local micro-roaster offering 100% Organic, Fair Trade Organic, and Rain Forest Alliance Coffees. Their top-grade beans from around the world will make this coffee experience one to keep you coming back. Grab a cup (or a few bags) at local farmer’s markets, City Market & Deli, The Bekery, or in local grocery stores! And, who doesn’t love food trucks? There is an immense amount of flavor rolling through the streets of Southwest Louisiana, such as Paul’s Rib Shack Barbecue, Hi-Licious Street Kitchen (traditional Chinese), The Sloppy Taco and more. These trucks have a wide variety and seem to be adding new fans on each corner where they set up shop. The truth is, no matter what you’re craving, Southwest Louisiana has a treat for you, and it’s sure to please. So grab your family and friends and head to Southwest Louisiana to savor our flavor! For more information on these culinary experiences and more, go to www.VisitLakeCharles.org/culinary-explorations.
