Gators On The Geaux

Make your way through the Lake Area, and you’ll encounter nearly 40 custom life-sized fiberglass resin alligators. Gators on the Geaux started over two decades ago as a fundraising effort for the Lake Charles Symphony and the arts community; it has evolved into a public art exhibit representing Southwest Louisiana’s personality as each gator is unique and tells a story. Not only does Gators on the Geaux support the local arts community, but it has also forged a partnership with local businesses. For a list of where you can spot these gators, visit www.lcsymphony.com

Sallier Oak Tree

Located at the Imperial Calcasieu Museum, the 375-year-old Sallier Oak has withstood the test of time. It has become a resilient symbol in the region’s history, representing the Southwest Louisiana community’s ability to endure disasters and grow with optimism. Wrapped in chains after the Hurricane of 1918, where it split in half, the oak survived and still bears the remnants of this community effort. The historic oak is a focal point for community celebrations and cultural events.

Darrell’s Famous Poboys Lake Charles

It’s a one-of-a-kind po’boy being served up to diners in Lake Charles. Darrell’s Famous Poboys offers what they call the Darrell Special. It’s the bar-turnedrestaurant’s signature sandwich stuffed with ham, turkey, and roast beef and served with roast beef gravy. Regulars also ask for the restaurant’s homemade jalapeno mayonnaise.

Spicy Cracklins from Famous Foods

They are a traditional Cajun snack - Cracklins are what you get when you fry up some pork fat and leave some meat attached. Each cracklin is about the size of a crouton, and at Famous Foods in Lake Charles, you can order them by the pound. Cracklins stand out thanks to the distinctive blend of textures that make them crispy, velvety, and sometimes a little chewy. At Famous Foods, the Cajun seasonings elevate this already mouthwatering treat to a new level.

The Railroad Museum Artifact - A Pearl Harbor Order

Traditionally, train employees receive routine orders for each journey, yet on Dec. 7, 1941, they received an unexpected directive that took everyone traveling through Southwest Louisiana that day by surprise.

At The Railroad Museum in DeQuincy, there is an original Missouri Pacific Lines train order instructing train employees to remove Japanese passengers from the train as the country was being attacked. The order is framed and displayed at the museum for visitors to read and learn more. The museum has a varied collection of railroad memorabilia.

VINTON

DEQUINCY

Start your adventure outdoors by visiting Niblett's Bluff Park. A park filled with history, Fort Niblett was set up at the park during the Civil War, and later, in the Reconstruction Era, it turned into a lumber camp with a railroad, a general store and a hotel. Remnants of those historical sites remain as preservation efforts continue.

STARKS

Make your way north to Starks for some mayhaw jelly. Locals celebrate the harvest of the mayhaw fruit each spring by hosting the Starks Mayhaw Festival. Vendors from all around sell locally made jelly and jam. While they can vary in taste, the flavor is usually described as a mix between fruity and tart. If you don’t make it in time for the festival, there are a couple of locals who sell the jelly year-round including Kim’s Mayhaw Jelly Assorted Jams & Jellies. To place your order call (337) 274-7550.

Then head northeast to DeQuincy, a town rich in railroad history, that transports visitors to a bygone era. The Railroad Museum is a testament to the town’s deep connection with the railway. Housed in the 1923 Kansas City Southern Depot, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum has a large and varied collection of railroad memorabilia.

SULPHUR

Once your train ride ends, jump back in your vehicle and head south to Sulphur to stop by Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point. Learn about crabbing, cooking gumbo, and playing Cajun music. Take the adventure outside and journey through 180-mile trails featuring marshes, prairies and shores teeming with wildlife and natural beauty. Make sure to stop by Hollier's Cajun Kitchen for homemade Cajun specialties like boudin, gumbo, fried alligator and po’boys. Ca c'est bon!

IOWA

WINGED WONDERS Birding in Southwest Louisiana

In the heart of Southwest Louisiana, where the land meets the sea and the air is alive with the songs of hundreds of bird species, lies a paradise for birdwatchers. This region, with its diverse ecosystem of prairies, forested wetlands, marshes, and coastal areas, provides a perfect habitat for more than 400 different species of birds. From the majestic eagle to the tiny warbler, this area is a haven for avian enthusiasts.

One of the top spots for birding in the area is Peveto Woods Sanctuary, managed by the Baton Rouge Audubon Society. This small but potent patch of coastal woodland is a hotspot for passerine birds during the spring and fall migration periods. The sanctuary is frequented by a variety of neotropical flycatchers, vireos, thrushes, warblers, tanagers, grosbeaks, and orioles from throughout eastern North America. It has also hosted numerous species from the western U.S. and Mexico, making it a truly unique birding destination. Thanks to its location in the center of the migratory flight path across the Gulf of Mexico, as many as two million birds use the Peveto Woods sanctuary each year.

Nearby, the Wetland Walkway on Sabine National Wildlife Refuge offers a 1.5-mile accessible path and boardwalk that loops out into the marsh. This area is a haven for songbirds, particularly during the

spring and fall migration. Waterfowl and wading birds are the main attractions here, along with the occasional sighting of American alligators and nutrias. Visitors can also climb up into a two-story observation tower for a panoramic view of the refuge’s 125,000 watery acres.

Another must-visit location is the Blue Goose Trail on Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. Located just south of Hackberry, this trail offers an accessible observation tower overlooking a grit site and Hackberry trees along the edge of Lake Calcasieu. The grove of live oak trees near the trail often hosts neotropical migrant songbirds during spring and fall, as well as other birds of interest throughout the year. Merlin, king and Virginia rails, waterfowl, and wading birds are common sights in this area.

PINTAIL WILDLIFE DRIVE

For those looking to explore further, Willow Island provides access to oak groves close to the coast, pastures with scrubby habitat, brackish marsh, and the Gulf Coast itself. Indigo buntings, blue grosbeaks, and a variety of sparrows can be spotted here, along with terns, pelicans, shorebirds, and ducks along the coast. Willow Island is also a great spot for spotting long-billed curlews and other coastal shorebirds.

Rutherford Beach, situated in central Cameron Parish near the mouth of the Mermentau River, offers marshes, pools, canals, and open gulf areas that are home to a variety of wading birds, waterfowl, rails, and seabirds throughout the year. Hackberry Ridge, an old coastal woodland east of Rutherford Beach, is a prime spot for spotting Caspian and Forster’s terns, roseate spoonbills, and other bird species during migration.

Pintail Wildlife Drive on Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is another fantastic location for birding. This popular 3-mile wildlife-watching loop through the marsh and associated woodland ridge offers opportunities to spot a variety of birds, including the beautiful Vermilion Flycatcher during the winter months. The refuge headquarters also features accessible boardwalks and photo blinds for birdwatchers.

For a glimpse of history along with your birdwatching, visit the Sabine Pass Lighthouse. Built in 1856, this lighthouse has endured hurricanes and a Civil War battle. Surrounding the lighthouse are salt marsh varieties, along with a small patch of woods consisting mainly of hackberry, toothache, yaupon holly, wax myrtle, and hawthorn. This area attracts migratory and non-migratory birds alike, with many colorful neotropical songbirds gracing the site in spring and fall. The threatened black rail has also been spotted in the tall grasses, and waterfowl and wading birds are almost always in the sky above.

Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge, with its extensive brackish marshlands, pools, and coastal woodlands, is home to as many as 160,000 waterfowl. The refuge offers a 3-mile nature drive for spectacular views of wading birds, shorebirds, and other species. Visitors can also access the private Nunez Woods area for an intact chenier habitat experience. Be sure to pick up a key for entrance at the refuge headquarters, as public access is restricted during deer hunting season.

Fabacher Road winds through an unmarred habitat that is predominately remnants of coastal tallgrass prairie occasionally dotted with shrubs like marsh elder, groundsel, and wax myrtle. This area is ideal for spotting Northern Bobwhite, Dickcissel, Blue Grosbeak, and a variety of flycatchers during migration. Crested Caracara, one of Louisiana’s two known breeding sites, can also be spotted here.

Nestled within the verdant landscape of Southwest Louisiana, Sam Houston Jones State Park offers a serene haven for both nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike. This park, located just north of Lake Charles, boasts a diverse array of habitats, including piney woods, cypress swamps, and marshes, making it a hotspot for bird diversity.
