f you like a little fright with your Halloween fun, then check out The Lost Hollows Haunted Attraction in Lake Charles. The terror-filled Deadly Pines trail is sure to be full of scares and screams. Begin your journey with an eerie hayride from the Lake Charles Power Centre parking lot, 3413 Derek Drive, Lake Charles, and travel to the creepiest woods in Southwest Louisiana. Hayride shuttle lines start at 6 p.m. and stop at 11 p.m. Individual ticket prices are $25 and $38 for FAST PASS tickets. Children under 13 years must be accompanied by an adult. THOROUGHBRED RACING SEASON Beginning October 8

on’t miss the Thoroughbred racing action at Delta Downs! The track will offer 26 stakes races during an 84-day season that runs from October 8 - February 29, 2020. The stakes schedule includes $2.245 million in total purse money. This year’s stakes activity will kick off on opening weekend with a pair of added-money events. On Friday, October 11 the track will host the $100,000 Magnolia for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares and on Saturday, October 12 the $100,000 Gold Cup for Louisianabred 3-year-olds and upward will take center stage to close out the first week of racing. 18

After Delta Downs’ opening weekend, which includes a special Tuesday card to start the meet on October 8, Delta Downs will race each Wednesday through Saturday night during the meeting. ulphur’s annual Cal-Cam Fair is a fall tradition for many Southwest Louisiana residents - and for good reason. Sponsored by the Cal- Cam Fair Association, the 95-year-old fair will take place at the West Cal Arena & Events Center, 401 Arena Rd. in Sulphur. There will be a new carnival ride vendor this year, along with plenty of good food, games and attractions for both children and adults. The popular Cal-Cam Fair parade will run down Cypress St. at 2 p.m. on Friday. Don’t miss the “Cal-Cam’s Got Talent” singing competition later that evening at 7 p.m. On Saturday, there will be an American-style bull fight, starting at 7 p.m., followed by live music with Cade Gillard. ArtsFest, a free arts festival for children, will be held 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., in the Civic Center’s Exhibition Hall. Local businesses and civic groups will host booths with art projects. TURNING BACK THE CLOCKS Each community in Southwest Louisiana has its own unique blend of character and history. With pirates, railroads, Victorian mansions and sleepy oaks, there is much to discover by looking into the colorful pages of the past.

HISTORY OF OUR SIX CITIES LAKE CHARLES

WESTLAKE

VINTON

The romantic history of Lake Charles, involving tales of pirates and buried treasure, began with the arrival of the first French settlers in the 1760s. The lumber boom was responsible for the early rapid growth of the city. Without architects in the area until the early 1900s, the structures reflect the individual characteristics of the carpenters in the “Charpentier Historic District,” on the National Register of Historic Places. Lake Charles celebrated 150 years in 2017.

Westlake was originally named “Rio Hondo,” and the area from Westlake up the Sabine River was also known as “No Man’s Land” to rustlers, pirates and renegades. In the early 1800s, settlers came to the area, purchased land and renamed it Westlake.

The quaint town of Vinton was once traveled by Civil War soldiers. The soldiers cut a road extending from an area in Vinton known as “Niblett’s Bluff” on the Sabine River. Once known as “Fort Niblett,” the area was home to a lumber camp, railroad, general store, hotel and more.

In the late 1800s, Sulphur was a sulfur mining haven. In 1907, the average population of the Sulphur Mines area was 5,000, making it a town unto itself. This fifty-acre tract of land was then known as the “richest fifty acres in the world.” The Brimstone Museum details Sulphur’s early history.

In 1897 the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railway, now the Kansas City Southern, reached the point where its main line bent toward the southwest to Beaumont and the old Calcasieu River. Vernon & Shreveport tram line, now the Lake Charles branch of the K.C.S., joined the main line causing the rise of the town DeQuincy. Today, you can visit the DeQuincy Railroad Museum.

The history of Iowa is filled with stories of the early Midwestern settlers from Kansas, Illinois and Iowa to the French Canadians (Cajuns) to Jean Lafitte’s pirates along the Old Spanish Trail. The railroad that cut through this country brought settlers who were lured to the prairie land for rice farming, raising cattle, and later, oil fields. Known also for the Iowa Rabbit Festival.

911 Memorial

Memorial honoring two local men killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. There is a piece of granite from the Pentagon and a steel girder from the World Trade Center. Features 3,000 pieces of colored glass commemorating those lost.

Charpentier Historic District Covering 40 blocks of downtown Lake Charles, you can step back in time with a self-guided walking or driving tour of one of the finest collections of architecture in Louisiana on the National Register of Historic Places. DeQuincy Historic District

Journey through the area once known as the “Turpentine Capital of Louisiana” and tour beautiful and historically significant buildings such as the All Saints Episcopal Church, the Kansas City Southern Railroad Depot/ DeQuincy Railroad Museum and the Hagler House.

Margaret Place/ Shell Beach Drive

Shell Beach Drive gives visitors a view of some of the most luxurious homes. The Margaret Place Historical District celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2012.

Millennium Statue

15 ft. bronze statue of Jesus Christ. Stands 23 ft. tall over the resting places of Lake Charles’ earliest and most famous settlers.

"LIVING HISTORY" CEMETERY TOUR October 25

his fall, locals can take guided walking tours through Lake Charles history and visit historic spots where time lies still. On October 25, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., four Lake Charles cemeteries will be featured in a “Living History” Cemetery Tour where guests can hear stories of local iconic figures while visiting their final resting places. Actors will dress in period attire and embody the lives of deceased historic figures from each of the four cemeteries. Guests will be guided throughout each cemetery as they listen to stories of the historic figures’ lives and their impacts on today’s Lake Charles. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and free for children 12 & under (accompanied by an adult ticket holder). Proceeds benefit the Arts Council of SWLA, which provides needed programs and events to support the arts in the region. SOUTHERN CAST IRON COOK-OFF TM

celebration of cast iron culinary culture, the Southern Cast Iron Cook-Off will bring together cast iron enthusiasts for a fun-filled, familyfriendly event that includes an expo, cooking demonstrations, live musical entertainment, food and beverage booths, and a cook-off competition among at-home chefs. The inaugural event will be held at the Lake Charles Civic Center Nov. 1-2. The two-day event kicks off at 1 p.m. Friday, with an indoor expo featuring a farmers market, the latest cast iron essentials and wares, cooking demonstrations, and artisan cast iron makers. On Saturday, the Southern Cast Iron Cook-Off competition and expo will start at 11 a.m. A panel of judges will select the top dish in each category, and winners

will be recognized during an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. In addition, guests can sample cuisine or enjoy beverages from any food and drink booth throughout the event. The demo stage will also be running on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. A full lineup of musical entertainment will accompany the event’s culinary festivities on Saturday. Feufollet will take the stage at 11 a.m., followed by Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie at 12:45 p.m., The Iceman Special at 2:30 p.m., Dustin Sonnier at 4:30 p.m. and country music artist Craig Morgan will headline the event at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and children 12 and under receive free admission. VIP tickets are also available for $65 and include access to the VIP lounge, food and drink vouchers. Cook-off teams can include up to six individuals and can enter multiple categories. LIGHT UP THE LAKE - SWLA CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES December 6-21

here is no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than taking advantage of the many Christmas celebrations happening all over Southwest Louisiana. There will be plenty of parades, fireworks, concerts, crafts, and Santa appearances to warm even the “Scroogiest” of hearts. Stop by Sulphur, Dec. 6-7, for the annual Christmas Under the Oaks celebration at the Henning Cultural Center. Festivities include carnival rides, a holiday market, live music, a balloon parade, the lighting of the Christmas tree and 100% chance of “snow.” Don’t miss the Kiwanis Christmas Lighted Parade on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by live music from Louisiana Express at 7 p.m. Country music artist Gyth Rigdon will close out the festival on Saturday at 6 p.m. Get an early start on your Christmas shopping at The Holiday House, which opens from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday,

Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7. The Holiday House features more than 35 different shops with Christmas decorations, gifts, ornaments and plenty more. Friday and Saturday shopping admission is $5. In Lake Charles, the fun kicks off Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Light Up the Lake Christmas Festival. Enjoy activities from carriage rides and gingerbread houses to the lighting ceremony, parades, and fireworks over the lake. The festivities continue with Santa’s Workshop from noon to 3 p.m. on Dec. 21, at the Lake Charles Civic Center, followed by Movies with the Mayor at 3:30 p.m. For more Christmas fun, head to DeQuincy for the annual Christmas Parade Friday, Dec. 7, starting at 10 a.m. Starks’ annual Christmas parade is at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7. the Town Christmas Tree at Vinton City Park. Several cities will ring in the holiday season with festivities on Saturday, Dec. 14. 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS FOR BOXING AND USA BOXING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS December 7-15

ore than 700 of the nation’s best male and female boxers will step into the ring beginning Dec. 7 looking for their chance to win a national title, in addition to the opportunity to represent Team USA at Tokyo 2020. This exciting week-long event will bring in more than 1,200 boxers, coaches, officials and family members to the Lake Charles area. USA Boxing, the national governing body for Olympic-style amateur boxing, chose Lake Charles to host the 2020 Olympic Trials for Boxing and USA Boxing National Championships. The trials will be held at the Lake Charles Civic Center, with the finals taking place

at Golden Nugget Lake Charles. In conjunction with the trials, the 2019 USA Boxing National Championships will be held to determine USA Boxing's junior and youth high performance teams for 2020. 2019 will also be the 25th anniversary celebration of the 1984 USA Boxing Olympic Team, who made history on the Olympic stage, winning a total of 11 medals. MUSEUMS PRESERVING THE MAGIC Southwest Louisiana is rich in history and imagination. Four museums in the Lake Charles area give visitors a chance to see the magic of the Mardi Gras Museum with the largest display of Mardi Gras costumes in the world; the hands-on Children's Museum, complete with interactive displays to stimulate young minds; and the Imperial Calcasieu Museum, transporting visitors back to a bygone era, also check out the USS Orleck Naval Museum! All locations open daily during daylight hours.
