LEISURE Demystifying Astronomy

New!

Dog Agility

Ages 16+

Pre-requisites: basic obedience skills which include; dog to be able to sit and go down and hold the position and be able to walk politely with handler on leash. If you want to develop your relationship with your dog in a fun way, this course will help develop skills necessary for more advanced work. Emphasis will be in practicing techniques with the use of some basic agility equipment (tunnels, jumps and table). At the end of this course we hope your dog will enthusiastically look forward to your training sessions, and that you will have discovered how to keep your dog motivated and focused.

This program is designed to explore characteristics of our star (the Sun), solar system, the planet on which we live, and our place in the Spiral Galaxy. It also explores other galaxies, other stars, constellations, and many mysteries of the astronomical vastness. Demystifying Astronomy is a graphical and descriptive (not scientific) astronomy program designed and intended for both enthusiasts and lay-people. It is for those who hope to gain a better understanding of their fit in the scheme of the astronomical landscape.

We use positive reinforcement throughout. Dogs of all types and sizes can enjoy agility. Dogs should be at least 9 months and handlers 16 years.

The program is interactive and guided by the needs and pace of the learner. It will accommodate interests and questions that often seem ‘naive’, but are important to the individual for a better understanding of astronomy and the space in which we live.

Classes will be held at their Indoor Winter training arena located at Apple Flats Horse Farm on Davidson Road. For more information, contact Nancy Williams, 250-766-3605, nancyinbc@gmail.com or visit the agility club’s website: lakecountryjumpingagilitymutts.weebly.com

The topical outlines for each of the six weeks are: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi.

Our Sun and the Rocky Planets Gas Giants and Frozen Rocks ‘Is There Anybody out There?’ - a look at the probability of life on exoplanets ‘Looking Upwards’ to identify stars and constellations Black Holes and other mysterious phenomena, and Everyday Astronomy - how astronomy has positively contributed to everyday life on earth.
