Lake Country Artwalk 2019

Welcome to Lake Country Artwalk 2019 Welcome to the 26th annual Lake Country ArtWalk! We are pleased to once again offer you an experience at this festival that will be fun and uplifting, that will offer you a rich collection of original art in many forms and styles, along with the great music, food, and those special events that make this year distinctive. You will want to check out the Selfie Sites, the Fashion Marketplace, the Opus demonstrations, and watch out for those roaming Fashion Flashes! The theme “Art in Fashion has allowed us the chance to explore the creative, artistic aspects of fashion. While the Committee created wearable art out of discarded materials, the Fibre artists have created wearable art that will amaze you. We found the art in fashion, but we also found the challenging issues related to the fashion industry, issues such as river pollution from dyes, exploitation of workers, fast fashion leading to excess and increased garbage. We felt it was important to acknowledge these issues, and so we invite you to check out the minifilm festival that covers these issues. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who are on the Planning Committee, and all those volunteers who work at many different tasks to make ArtWalk happen. Thank you! The support of our Sponsors is also essential to the production of ArtWalk. We ask you to check them out in this Program and on site. We greatly appreciate their way of supporting the arts and our community. We hope you enjoy your time at ArtWalk, that you might meet old friends, and that you will take home some inspiration and thoughts of good times.

SPECIAL EVENTS AT ARTWALK Fashion Marketplace

Visit this special marketplace made up of vendors who create fashion accessories and unique garments. Located in the foyer of the Municipal Hall, the Fashion Marketplace will be open all day, both days, but this year only, so don’t miss it.

Paint Off

Our ever-popular Paint-Off will take place under the big tent at the Memorial Hall each day at 11:00 and again at 1:00. The artists will have only 15 minutes to complete a painting of a subject about Fashion. Not only is this painting activity entertaining to watch, you could be one of the lucky audience members to win one of the completed paintings.

Quick Draw

Another opportunity to watch the magic of artists creating a painting in a short period of time is the hour long Quick Draw taking place in the Foyer on Sunday from 2:00 – 3:00. The paintings created by eight artists will then be auctioned off at 3:15. Both phases of this activity, the painting and the auctioning, are engaging and not to be missed!

nstallation Art

Artist Angela Hansen will use her specialization in encaustic work to create five unique sculptures that make up the installation art called Transformation of Gaia. Encaustic work uses beeswax to create surface relief and sculptures. You will be able to view the circle of sculptures enhanced with lighting and sound in the Drama Room along the School Hallway.

Fashion Flashes

Keep your eyes open for the Creator’s Art Centre models who will roam the ArtWalk sites wearing four different types of fashion. You might encounter them modeling Wearable Art made by the creative Fibre Artists, or fashions made by Indigenous designers, or garments made from recycled, discarded materials. You will be fascinated by the ‘fast fashion’ modeling.

●Selfie Sites

Mirrors, dots, paper dolls and more can be found in five mini rooms located around ArtWalk, inviting you to interact, and maybe take a selfie or two.

Fashion Slide Show

When you fancy a bit of a rest after touring around ArtWalk, find the Fashion Slide Show on the stage in the Memorial Hall to watch fascinating images from unique fashions, wearable art, and illustrations of fashion.

● Youth Gallery

Young people have shown their creative flair in a great display of artworks in the Youth Gallery, located outside the School entrance. Students in all the schools in Lake Country were asked to think about and create artworks about “Art in Fashion”. Check out the beautifully painted jackets hanging along the Hallway created by the high school art students. There will also be a chance for children, aged 5 – 12, to go to the Creative Art Centre to make their artworks. The Children’s Art Centre will be open both days at 11:00 to 3:00 , located beside the Youth Gallery.

Live Model Drawing

A classic in the art world is figurative drawing from a live model. Perhaps you would like to try your hand at making a drawing, or perhaps you will be content to watch others create drawings of the live model. All materials will be provided. Wearing some distinctive fashion, the live model drawing will take place under the big tent at the Memorial Hall at 12:00 and 3:00 both days.

Theme Exhibition

ArtWalk artists are not expected to connect to the annual theme with their art, however, we do give them an opportunity to create one image that relates to the theme, interpreting it in their own way. These artworks are assembled to form the Theme Exhibition located in the foyer of the Municipal Hall. Check out the many different ways these creative artists have represented ‘Art in Fashion’.

Lake Country Museum Displays

Near the entrance to Creekside Theatre, you will find two displays provided by the Lake County Museum. The glass cabinet contains some interesting pieces of fashion from the museum’s archives. There is an interesting controversary about each piece, see if you can find it. The 20th anniversary of Creekside Theatre is celebrated in a display of dioramas on the landing, which will include scene sets, play props, and other memorabilia from the history of Creekside Theatre.

Mini Fashion Film Festival

In order to address some of the controversial aspects of the fashion industry, we offer three films to be shown in Creekside Theatre 10:30 “River Blue” – about polluting rivers with dye 1:00 “The Next Black”– the future of fashion, including smart clothes and bio fabrics. 2:00 “The True Cost” – highlighting the social costs of the fashion industry.

Make-It Centre - HATS

With so much inspiration surrounding you, the make-it centre might be the perfect stop, located on the stage in the Memorial Hall . Make a hat or a fascinator using the assorted, colourful materials available to serve your creativity. Have fun making your hat!

MC College Hair & Esthetics Demonstration

Hair styling and make-up are part of fashion, so we are pleased to present the MC College of Hair and Esthetics who will be completing several makeovers, on Saturday only. Find them on the stage at the Memorial Hall to see the “Avant Garde Runway Hair” and the “Acromatic Make-Up.

Lake Country Art Gallery

A short walk down the road following the coloured gates will take you to the Lake Country Art Gallery that has an intriguing exhibition called “Atklokum” with artworks from four local Silyx artists: Barb Marchand, Sheldon Louis, David Wilson and Mariel Belange.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE VOTING For many years, visitors to ArtWalk have voted for their favourite artist. We encourage you to do so again this year, then place your ballot into the box, to be found in the Foyer and in the Memorial Hall. You may be the lucky voter to have your name drawn to receive a special prize. Each year, we list the top ten artists from the People’s Choice Voting, then place that list on the website.
